Search

Binary interactions have been proposed to explain a variety of circumstellar structures seen around evolved stars, including asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and planetary nebulae. Studies resolving the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars have revealed spirals, discs and bipolar outflows, with shaping attributed to interactions with a companion. For the first time, we have used a combined chemical and dynamical analysis to reveal a highly eccentric and long-period orbit for W Aquilae, a binary system containing an AGB star and a main sequence companion. Our results are based on anisotropic SiN emission, the first detections of NS and SiC towards an S-type star, and density structures observed in the CO emission. These features are all interpreted as having formed during periastron interactions. The sample of planet-forming disks observed by high-contrast imaging campaigns over the last decade is mature enough to enable the demographical analysis of individual star-forming regions. We present the full census of Taurus sources with VLT/SPHERE polarimetric images available. The whole sample sums up to 43 targets (of which 31 have not been previously published) corresponding to one-fifth of the Class II population in Taurus and about half of such objects that are observable. A large fraction of the sample is apparently made up of isolated faint disks (equally divided between small and large self-shadowed disks). Ambient signal is visible in about one-third of the sample. This probes the interaction with the environment and with companions or the outflow activity of the system. The central portion of the Taurus region almost exclusively hosts faint disks, while the periphery also hosts bright disks interacting with their surroundings. The few bright disks are found around apparently older stars. The overall picture is that the Taurus region is in an early evolutionary stage of planet formation. Yet, some objects are discussed individually, as in an intermediate or exceptional stage of the disk evolution. We used VLT/SPHERE to observe 20 systems in the Cha I cloud in polarized scattered light in the near-infrared. We combined the scattered light observations with existing literature data on stellar properties and with archival ALMA continuum data to study trends with system age and dust mass. We also connected resolved near-infrared observations with the spectral energy distributions of the systems. In 13 of the 20 systems included in this study we detected resolved scattered light signals from circumstellar dust. For the CR Cha, CT Cha, CV Cha, SY Cha, SZ Cha, and VZ Cha systems we present the first detailed descriptions of the disks in scattered light. The observations found typically smooth or faint disks, often with little substructure, with the notable exceptions of SZ Cha, which shows an extended multiple-ringed disk, and WW Cha, which shows interaction with the cloud environment. New high S/N K- band observations of the HD 97048 system in our survey reveal a significant brightness asymmetry that may point to disk misalignment and subsequent shadowing of outer disk regions, possibly related to the suggested planet candidate in the disk. We resolve for the first time the stellar binary in the CS Cha system. Multiple wavelength observations of the disk around CS Cha have revealed that the system contains small, compact dust grains that may be strongly settled, consistent with numerical studies of circumbinary disks. We find in our sample that there is a strong anti-correlation between the presence of a (close) stellar companion and the detection of circumstellar material with five of our seven nondetections located in binary systems., Comment: Accepted by A&A

We present JWST imaging from 2$\mu$m to 21$\mu$m of the edge-on protoplanetary disk around the embedded young star IRAS04302+2247. The structure of the source shows two reflection nebulae separated by a dark lane. The source extent is dominated by the extended filamentary envelope at $\sim$4.4$\mu$m and shorter wavelengths, transitioning at 7$\mu$m and longer wavelengths to more compact lobes of scattered light from the disk itself. The dark lane thickness does not vary significantly with wavelength, which we interpret as an indication for intermediate-sized ($\sim10\mu$m) grains in the upper layers of the disk. Intriguingly, we find that the brightest nebula of IRAS40302 switches side between 12.8$\mu$m and 21$\mu$m. We explore the effect of a tilted inner region on the general appearance of edge-on disks. We find that radiative transfer models of a disk including a tilted inner region can reproduce an inversion in the brightest nebula. In addition, for specific orientations, the model also predicts strong lateral asymmetries, which can occur for more than half possible viewing azimuths. A large number of edge-on protoplanetary disks observed in scattered light show such lateral asymmetries (15/20), which suggests that a large fraction of protoplanetary disks might host a tilted inner region. Stellar spots may also induce lateral asymmetries, which are expected to vary over a significantly shorter timescale. Scattered light imaging of protoplanetary disks provides key insights on the geometry and dust properties in the disk surface. Here we present JWST 2--21\,$\mu$m images of a 1000\,au-radius edge-on protoplanetary disk surrounding an 0.4\,$M_\odot$ young star in Taurus, 2MASS\,J04202144+2813491. These observations represent the longest wavelengths at which a protoplanetary disk is spatially resolved in scattered light. We combine these observations with HST optical images and ALMA continuum and CO mapping. We find that the changes in the scattered light disk morphology are remarkably small across a factor of 30 in wavelength, indicating that dust in the disk surface layers is characterized by an almost gray opacity law. Using radiative transfer models, we conclude that grains up to $\gtrsim10\,\mu$m in size are fully coupled to the gas in this system, whereas grains $\gtrsim100\,\mu$m are strongly settled towards the midplane. Further analyses of these observations, and similar ones of other edge-on disks, will provide strong empirical constraints on disk dynamics and evolution and grain growth models. In addition, the 7.7 and 12.\,$\mu$m JWST images reveal an X-shaped feature located above the warm molecular layer traced by CO line emission. The highest elevations at which this feature is detectable roughly match the maximal extent of the disk in visible wavelength scattered light as well as of an unusual kinematic signature in CO. We report new total intensity visible light high contrast imaging of the TW Hya disk taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This represents the first published images of the disk with STIS since 2016, when a moving shadow on the disk surface was reported. We continue to see the shadow moving in a counter-clockwise fashion, but in these new images the shadow has evolved into two separate shadows, implying a change in behavior for the occulting structure. Based on radiative transfer models of optically thick disk structures casting shadows, we infer that a plausible explanation for the change is that there are now two misaligned components of the inner disk. The first of these disks is located between 5-6au with an inclination of 5.5\arcdeg and PA of 170\arcdeg, the second between 6-7au with and inclination of 7\arcdeg and PA of 50\arcdeg. Finally, we speculate on the implications of the new shadow structure and determine that additional observations are needed to disentangle the nature of TW Hya's inner disk architecture., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, published in ApJ

ABRIDGED. The analysis of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of protoplanetary disks to determine their physical properties is known to be highly degenerate. Hence, a Bayesian analysis is required to obtain parameter uncertainties and degeneracies. The challenge here is computational speed, as one radiative transfer model requires a couple of minutes to compute. We performed a Bayesian analysis for 30 well-known protoplanetary disks to determine their physical disk properties, including uncertainties and degeneracies. To circumvent the computational cost problem, we created neural networks (NNs) to emulate the SED generation process. We created two sets of radiative transfer disk models to train and test two NNs that predict SEDs for continuous and discontinuous disks. A Bayesian analysis was then performed on 30 protoplanetary disks with SED data collected by the DIANA project to determine the posterior distributions of all parameters. We ran this analysis twice, (i) with old distances and additional parameter constraints as used in a previous study, to compare results, and (ii) with updated distances and free choice of parameters to obtain homogeneous and unbiased model parameters. We evaluated the uncertainties in the determination of physical disk parameters from SED analysis, and detected and quantified the strongest degeneracies. The NNs are able to predict SEDs within 1ms with uncertainties of about 5% compared to the true SEDs obtained by the radiative transfer code. We find parameter values and uncertainties that are significantly different from previous values obtained by $\chi^2$ fitting. Comparing the global evidence for continuous and discontinuous disks, we find that 26 out of 30 objects are better described by disks that have two distinct radial zones. We present new VLA observations, between 6.8mm and 66mm, of the edge-on Class~I disk IRAS04302+2247. Observations at 6.8mm and 9.2mm lead to the detection of thermal emission from the disk, while shallow observations at the other wavelengths are used to correct for emission from other processes. The disk radial brightness profile transitions from broadly extended in previous ALMA 0.9mm and 2.1mm observations to much more centrally brightened at 6.8mm and 9.2mm, which can be explained by optical depth effects. The radiative transfer modeling of the 0.9mm, 2.1mm, and 9.2mm data suggests that the grains are smaller than 1cm in the outer regions of the disk and allows us to obtain the first lower limit for the scale height of grains emitting at millimeter wavelengths in a protoplanetary disk. We find that the millimeter dust scale height is between 1au and 6au at a radius 100au from the central star, while the gas scale height is estimated to be about 7au, indicating a modest level of settling. The estimated dust height is intermediate between less evolved Class 0 sources, that are found to be vertically thick, and more evolved Class II sources, which show a significant level of settling. Methods. We use the code MCFOST to solve the non-LTE problem of line formation in non-axisymmetric accreting magnetospheres. We compute the Br{\gamma} line profile originating from accretion columns for models with different magnetic obliquities. We also derive monochromatic synthetic images of the Br{\gamma} line emitting region across the line profile. This spectral line is a prime diagnostics of magnetospheric accretion in young stars and is accessible with the long baseline near-infrared interferometer GRAVITY installed at the ESO Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Results. We derive Br{\gamma} line profiles as a function of rotational phase and compute interferometric observables, visibilities and phases, from synthetic images. The line profile shape is modulated along the rotational cycle, exhibiting inverse P Cygni profiles at the time the accretion shock faces the observer. The size of the line's emission region decreases as the magnetic obliquity increases, which is reflected in a lower line flux. We apply interferometric models to the synthetic visibilities in order to derive the size of the line-emitting region. We find the derived interferometric size to be more compact than the actual size of the magnetosphere, ranging from 50 to 90\% of the truncation radius. Additionally, we show that the rotation of the non-axisymmetric magnetosphere is recovered from the rotational modulation of the Br{\gamma}-to-continuum photo-centre shifts, as measured by the differential phase of interferometric visibilities.

High dust density in the midplane of protoplanetary disks is favorable for efficient grain growth and can allow fast formation of planetesimals and planets, before disks dissipate. Vertical settling and dust trapping in pressure maxima are two mechanisms allowing dust to concentrate in geometrically thin and high density regions. In this work, we aim to study these mechanisms in the highly inclined protoplanetary disk SSTC2D J163131.2-242627 (Oph163131, i~84deg). We present new high angular resolution continuum and 12CO ALMA observations of Oph163131. The gas emission appears significantly more extended in the vertical and radial direction compared to the dust emission, consistent with vertical settling and possibly radial drift. In addition, the new continuum observations reveal two clear rings. The outer ring, located at ~100 au, is well resolved in the observations, which allows us to put stringent constraints on the vertical extent of millimeter dust particles. We model the disk using radiative transfer and find that the scale height of millimeter sized grains is 0.5au or less at 100au from the central star. This value is about one order of magnitude smaller than the scale height of smaller micron-sized dust grains constrained by previous modeling, which implies that efficient settling of the large grains is occurring in the disk. When adopting a parametric dust settling prescription, we find that the observations are consistent with a turbulent viscosity coefficient of about alpha<=10^-5 at 100au. Finally, we find that the thin dust scale height measured in Oph163131 is favorable for planetary growth by pebble accretion: a 10 M_Earth planet may grow within less than 10 Myr, even in orbits exceeding 50au., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present near-infrared Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer LMIRCam imagery of the disk around the Herbig Ae/Be star AB Aurigae. A comparison of surface brightness at Ks (2.16 ${\mu}$m), H2O narrowband (3.08 ${\mu}$m), and L' (3.7 ${\mu}$m) allows us to probe the presence of icy grains in this (pre)transitional disk environment. By applying Reference Differential Imaging PSF subtraction, we detect the disk at high signal to noise in all three bands. We find strong morphological differences between bands, including asymmetries consistent with observed spiral arms within 100 AU in L'. An apparent deficit of scattered light at 3.08 ${\mu}$m relative to bracketing wavelengths (Ks and L') is evocative of ice absorption at the disk surface layer. However, the ${\Delta}$(Ks-H2O) color is consistent with grains with little to no ice (0-5% by mass). The ${\Delta}$(H2O-L') color, conversely, suggests grains with a much higher ice mass fraction (~0.68), and the two colors cannot be reconciled under a single grain population model. Additionally, we find the extremely red ${\Delta}$(Ks-L') disk color cannot be reproduced under conventional scattered light modeling with any combination of grain parameters or reasonable local extinction values. We hypothesize that the scattering surfaces at the three wavelengths are not co-located, and optical depth effects result in each wavelength probing the grain population at different disk surface depths. The morphological similarity between Ks and H2O suggests their scattering surfaces are near one another, lending credence to the ${\Delta}$(Ks-H2O) disk color constraint of < 5% ice mass fraction for the outermost scattering disk layer., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Stellar binaries represent a substantial fraction of stellar systems, especially among young stellar objects. Accordingly, binaries play an important role in setting the architecture of a large number of protoplanetary discs. Binaries in coplanar and polar orientations with respect to the circumbinary disc are stable configurations and could induce non-axisymmetric structures in the dust and gas distributions. In this work, we suggest that the structures shown in the central region of the protoplanetary disc HD 169142 are produced by the presence of an inner stellar binary and a circumbinary (P-type) planet. We find that a companion with a mass-ratio of 0.1, semi-major axis of 9.9 au, eccentricity of 0.2, and inclination of 90{\deg}, together with a 2 Jupiter Mass coplanar planet on a circular orbit at 45 au reproduce the structures at the innermost ring observed at 1.3 mm and the shape of spiral features in scattered light observations. The model predicts changes in the disc's dust structure, and star's astrometric parameters, which would allow testing its veracity by monitoring this system over the next 20 years., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

To date, nearly two hundred planet-forming disks have been imaged with high resolution. Our propensity to study bright and extended objects is however biasing our view of the disk demography. In this work, we contribute to alleviate this bias by analyzing fifteen disks targeted with VLT/SPHERE that look faint in scattered light. Sources were selected based on a low far-IR excess from the spectral energy distribution. The comparison with the ALMA images available for a few sources shows that the scattered light surveyed by these datasets is only detected from a small portion of the disk extent. The mild anti-correlation between the disk brightness and the near-IR excess demonstrates that these disks are self-shadowed: the inner disk rim intercepts much starlight and leaves the outer disk in penumbra. Based on the uniform distribution of the disk brightness in scattered light across all spectral types, self-shadowing would act similarly for inner rims at a different distance from the star. We discuss how the illumination pattern of the outer disk may evolve with time. Some objects in the sample are proposed to be at an intermediate stage toward bright disks from the literature with either no shadow or with sign of azimuthally confined shadows., Comment: Accepted for publication in A\&A

We initiated a deep-imaging survey of Scorpius-Centaurus A-F stars with predicted warm inner and cold outer belts of debris reminiscent of the architecture of emblematic systems such as HR 8799. We present resolved SPHERE images of a narrow ring of debris around the F5-type star HD 141011 that was observed as part of our survey in 2015, 2016, and 2019. The ring extends up to ~1.1" (~141 au) from the star in the IRDIS and IFS data obtained in 2016 and 2019. The disk is not detected in the 2015 data which are of poorer quality. The disks is best reproduced by models of a noneccentric ring centered on the star with an inclination of $69.1\pm0.9^{\circ}$, a position angle of $-24.6 \pm 1.7^{\circ}$, and a semimajor axis of $127.5\pm3.8$ au. The combination of radial velocity and imaging data excludes brown-dwarf (M>13.6 MJup) companions coplanar with the disk from 0.1 to 0.9 au and from 20 au up to 500 au (90% probability). HD 141011 adds to the growing list of debris disks that are resolved in Sco-Cen. It is one of the faintest disks that are resolved from the ground and has a radial extent and fractional width ($\sim$12.5%) reminiscent of Fomalhaut. Its moderate inclination and large semimajor axis make it a good target for the James Webb Space Telescope and should allow a deeper search for putative companions shaping the dust distribution., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures. Exoplanets form in protoplanetary accretion discs. The total protoplanetary disc mass is the most fundamental parameter, since it sets the mass budget for planet formation. Although observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter array (ALMA) have dramatically increased our understanding of these discs, total protoplanetary disc mass remains difficult to measure. If a disc is sufficiency massive ($\gtrsim$ 10\% of the host star mass), it can excite gravitational instability (GI). Recently, it has been revealed that GI leaves kinematic imprints of its presence known as the "GI Wiggle." In this work, we use numerical simulations to empirically determine an approximately linear relationship between the amplitude of the wiggle and the host disc-to-star mass ratio, and show that measurements of the amplitude are possible with the spatial and spectral capabilities of ALMA. Context. Characterizing the evolution of protoplanetary disks is necessary to improve our understanding of planet formation. Constraints on both dust and gas are needed to determine the dominant disk dissipation mechanisms. Aims. We aim to compare the disk dust masses in the Chamaeleon II (Cha II) star-forming region with other regions with ages between 1 and 10Myr. Methods. We use ALMA band 6 observations (1.3 mm) to survey 29 protoplanetary disks in Cha II. Dust mass estimates are derived from the continuum data. Results. Out of our initial sample of 29 disks, we detect 22 sources in the continuum, 10 in 12CO, 3 in 13CO, and none in C18O (J=2-1). Additionally, we detect two companion candidates in the continuum and 12CO emission. Most disk dust masses are lower than 10Mearth, assuming thermal emission from optically thin dust. We compare consistent estimations of the distributions of the disk dust mass and the disk-to-stellar mass ratios in Cha II with six other low mass and isolated star-forming regions in the age range of 1-10Myr: Upper Sco, CrA, IC 348, Cha I, Lupus, and Taurus. When comparing the dust-to-stellar mass ratio, we find that the masses of disks in Cha II are statistically different from those in Upper Sco and Taurus, and we confirm that disks in Upper Sco, the oldest region of the sample, are statistically less massive than in all other regions. Performing a second statistical test of the dust mass distributions from similar mass bins, we find no statistical differences between these regions and Cha II. Conclusions. We interpret these trends, most simply, as a sign of decline in the disk dust masses with time or dust evolution. Different global initial conditions in star-forming regions may also play a role, but their impact on the properties of a disk population is difficult to isolate in star-forming regions lacking nearby massive stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Misalignments within protoplanetary discs are now commonly observed, and features such as shadows in scattered light images indicate departure from a co-planar geometry. VLT/SPHERE observations of the disc around HD 143006 show a large-scale asymmetry, and two narrow dark lanes which are indicative of shadowing. ALMA observations also reveal the presence of rings and gaps in the disc, along with a bright arc at large radii. We present new hydrodynamic simulations of HD 143006, and show that a configuration with both a strongly inclined binary and an outer planetary companion is the most plausible to explain the observed morphological features. We compute synthetic observations from our simulations, and successfully reproduce both the narrow shadows and the brightness asymmetry seen in IR scattered light. Additionally, we reproduce the large dust observed in the mm continuum, due to a 10 Jupiter mass planet detected in the CO kinematics. Our simulations also show the formation of a circumplanetary disc, which is misaligned with respect to the outer disc. The narrow shadows cast by the inner disc and the planet-induced "kink" in the disc kinematics are both expected to move on a time-scale of $\sim$ 5-10 years, presenting a potentially observable test of our model. To determine the origin of the spiral structure observed in the dust continuum emission of Elias 2-27 we analyze multi-wavelength continuum ALMA data with a resolution of $\sim$0.2 arcsec ($\sim$23au) at 0.89, 1.3 and 3.3mm. We also study the kinematics of the disk with $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O ALMA observations in the $J=$3-2 transition. The spiral arm morphology is recovered at all wavelengths in the dust continuum observations, where we measure contrast and spectral index variations along the spiral arms and detect subtle dust-trapping signatures. We determine that the emission from the midplane is cold and interpret the optical depth results as signatures of a higher disk mass than previous constraints. From the gas data, we search for deviations from Keplerian motion and trace the morphology of the emitting surfaces and the velocity profiles. We find an azimuthally varying emission layer height in the system, large-scale emission surrounding the disk, and strong perturbations in the channel maps, co-located with the spirals. Additionally, we develop multigrain dust and gas SPH simulations of a gravitationally unstable disk and compare them to the observations. Given the large scale emission and highly perturbed gas structure, together with the comparison of continuum observations to theoretical predictions, we propose infall-triggered gravitational instabilities as origin for the observed spiral structure., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 38 pages, 23 Figures

Vortices are one of the most promising mechanisms to locally concentrate millimeter dust grains and allow the formation of planetesimals through gravitational collapse. The outer disk around the binary system HD 142527 is known for its large horseshoe structure with azimuthal contrasts of 3-5 in the gas surface density and of about 50 in the dust. Using 13CO and C18O J = 3-2 transition lines, we detect kinematic deviations to the Keplerian rotation, which are consistent with the presence of a large vortex around the dust crescent, as well as a few spirals in the outer regions of the disk. Comparisons with a vortex model suggest velocity deviations up to 350 m/s after deprojection compared to the background Keplerian rotation, as well as an extension of about 40 au radially on both sides of the vortex and 200 degrees azimuthally, yielding an azimuthal-to-radial aspect ratio of 5. Another alternative for explaining the vortex-like signal implies artificial velocity deviations generated by beam smearing in association with variations of the gas velocity due to gas pressure gradients at the inner and outer edges of the circumbinary disk. The two scenarios are currently difficult to differentiate and, for this purpose, would probably require the use of multiple lines at a higher spatial resolution. The beam smearing effect, due to the finite spatial resolution of the observations and gradients in the line emission, should be common in observations of protoplanetary disks and may lead to misinterpretations of the gas velocity, in particular around ring-like structures., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

As the earliest stage of planet formation, massive, optically thick, and gas rich protoplanetary disks provide key insights into the physics of star and planet formation. When viewed edge-on, high resolution images offer a unique opportunity to study both the radial and vertical structures of these disks and relate this to vertical settling, radial drift, grain growth, and changes in the midplane temperatures. In this work, we present multi-epoch HST and Keck scattered light images, and an ALMA 1.3 mm continuum map for the remarkably flat edge-on protoplanetary disk SSTC2DJ163131.2-242627, a young solar-type star in $\rho$ Ophiuchus. We model the 0.8 $\mu$m and 1.3 mm images in separate MCMC runs to investigate the geometry and dust properties of the disk using the MCFOST radiative transfer code. In scattered light, we are sensitive to the smaller dust grains in the surface layers of the disk, while the sub-millimeter dust continuum observations probe larger grains closer to the disk midplane. An MCMC run combining both datasets using a covariance-based log-likelihood estimation was marginally successful, implying insufficient complexity in our disk model. The disk is well characterized by a flared disk model with an exponentially tapered outer edge viewed nearly edge-on, though some degree of dust settling is required to reproduce the vertically thin profile and lack of apparent flaring. A colder than expected disk midplane, evidence for dust settling, and residual radial substructures all point to a more complex radial density profile to be probed with future, higher resolution observations., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

Understanding how giant planets form requires observational input from directly imaged protoplanets. We used VLT/NACO and VLT/SPHERE to search for companions in the transition disc of 2MASS J19005804-3645048 (hereafter CrA-9), an accreting M0.75 dwarf with an estimated age of 1-2 Myr. We found a faint point source at $\sim$0.7'' separation from CrA-9 ($\sim$108 au projected separation). Our 3-epoch astrometry rejects a fixed background star with a $5\sigma$ significance. The near-IR absolute magnitudes of the object point towards a planetary-mass companion. However, our analysis of the 1.0-3.8$\mu$m spectrum extracted for the companion suggests it is a young M5.5 dwarf, based on both the 1.13-$\mu$m Na index and comparison with templates of the Montreal Spectral Library. The observed spectrum is best reproduced with high effective temperature ($3057^{+119}_{-36}$K) BT-DUSTY and BT-SETTL models, but the corresponding photometric radius required to match the measured flux is only $0.60^{+0.01}_{-0.04}$ Jovian radius. We discuss possible explanations to reconcile our measurements, including an M-dwarf companion obscured by an edge-on circum-secondary disc or the shock-heated part of the photosphere of an accreting protoplanet. Gas-rich circumstellar disks are the cradles of planet formation. As such, their evolution will strongly influence the resulting planet population. In the ESO DESTINYS large program, we study these disks within the first 10 Myr of their development with near-infrared scattered light imaging. Here we present VLT/SPHERE polarimetric observations of the nearby class II system SU Aur in which we resolve the disk down to scales of ~7 au. In addition to the new SPHERE observations, we utilize VLT/NACO, HST/STIS and ALMA archival data. The new SPHERE data show the disk around SU Aur and extended dust structures in unprecedented detail. We resolve several dust tails connected to the Keplerian disk. By comparison with ALMA data, we show that these dust tails represent material falling onto the disk. The disk itself shows an intricate spiral structure and a shadow lane, cast by an inner, misaligned disk component. Our observations suggest that SU Aur is undergoing late infall of material, which can explain the observed disk structures. SU Aur is the clearest observational example of this mechanism at work and demonstrates that late accretion events can still occur in the class II phase, thereby significantly affecting the evolution of circumstellar disks. Aims. We present MCFOST-art, a new non-local thermodynamic equilibrium radiative transfer solver for multilevel atomic systems. The code is embedded in the 3D radiative transfer code MCFOST and is compatible with most of the MCFOST modules. The code is versatile and designed to model the close environment of stars in 3D. Methods. The code solves for the statistical equilibrium and radiative transfer equations using the Multilevel Accelerated Lambda Iteration (MALI) method. We tested MCFOST-art on spherically symmetric models of stellar photospheres as well as on a standard model of the solar atmosphere. We computed atomic level populations and outgoing fluxes and compared these values with the results of the TURBOspectrum and RH codes. Calculations including expansion and rotation of the atmosphere were also performed. We tested both the pure local thermodynamic equilibrium and the out-of-equilibrium problems. Results. In all cases, the results from all codes agree within a few percent at all wavelengths and reach the sub-percent level between RH and MCFOST-art. We still note a few marginal discrepancies between MCFOST-art and TURBOspectrum as a result of different treatments of background opacities at some critical wavelength ranges.

We analyze a sample of 12 HST-selected edge-on protoplanetary disks for which the vertical extent of the emission layers can be constrained directly. We present ALMA high angular resolution continuum images (0.1arcsec) of these disks at two wavelengths, 0.89mm and 2.06mm (respectively ALMA bands 7 and 4), supplemented with archival band 6 data (1.33mm) where available. For most sources, the millimeter continuum emission is more compact than the scattered light, both in the vertical and radial directions. Six sources are resolved along their minor axis in at least one millimeter band, providing direct information on the vertical distribution of the millimeter grains. For the second largest disk of the sample, the significant difference in vertical extent between band 7 and band 4 suggests efficient size-selective vertical settling of large grains. Furthermore, the only Class I object in our sample shows evidence of flaring in the millimeter. Along the major axis, all disks are well resolved. Four of them are larger in band 7 than in band 4 in the radial direction, and three have a similar radial extent in all bands. For all disks, we also derive the millimeter brightness temperature and spectral index maps. We find that the disks are likely optically thick and that the dust emission reveals low brightness temperatures in most cases (<10K). The integrated spectral indices are similar to those of disks at lower inclination. The comparison of a generic radiative transfer disk model with our data shows that at least 3 disks are consistent with a small millimeter dust scale height, of a few au (measured at r=100au). This is in contrast with the more classical value of h_g\sim10au derived from scattered light images and from gas line measurements. Observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter array (ALMA) have dramatically improved our understanding of the site of exoplanet formation: protoplanetary discs. However, many basic properties of these discs are not well-understood. The most fundamental of these is the total disc mass, which sets the mass budget for planet formation. Discs with sufficiently high masses can excite gravitational instability and drive spiral arms that are detectable with ALMA . Although spirals have been detected in ALMA observations of the dust , their association with gravitational instability, and high disc masses, is far from clear. Here we report a prediction for kinematic evidence of gravitational instability. Using hydrodynamics simulations coupled with radiative transfer calculations, we show that a disc undergoing such instability has clear kinematic signatures in molecular line observations across the entire disc azimuth and radius which are independent of viewing angle. If these signatures are detected, it will provide the clearest evidence for the occurrence of gravitational instability in planet-forming discs, and provide a crucial way to measure disc masses., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted to The Astrophysical Journal

To understand the formation of planetary systems, one needs to understand the initial conditions of planet formation, i.e. the young gas-rich planet forming disks. Spatially resolved high-contrast observations are of particular interest, since substructures in disks, linked to planet formation, can be detected and close companions or even planets in formation embedded in the disk can be revealed. In this study we present the first result of the DESTINYS survey (Disk Evolution Study Through Imaging of Nearby Young Stars). DESTINYS is an ESO/SPHERE large program that aims at studying disk evolution in scattered light, mainly focusing on a sample of low-mass stars (<1$M_\odot$) in nearby (~200 pc) star-forming regions. In this particular study we present the observations of the ET Cha (RECX 15) system, a nearby 'old' classical T Tauri star (5-8 Myr, ~100 pc), which is still strongly accreting. We use SPHERE/IRDIS in H-band polarimetric imaging mode to obtain high contrast images of the ET Cha system to search for scattered light from the circumstellar disk as well as thermal emission from close companions. We additionally employ VLT/NACO total intensity archival data taken in 2003. We report here the discovery of a low-mass (sub)stellar companion with SPHERE/IRDIS to ET Cha. We are estimating the mass of this new companion based on photometry. Depending on the system age it is a 5 Myr, 50 $M_{Jup}$ brown dwarf or an 8 Myr, 0.10 $M_\odot$ M-type pre-main-sequence star. We explore possible orbital solutions and discuss the recent dynamic history of the system. Independent of the precise companion mass we find that the presence of the companion likely explains the small size of the disk around ET Cha. The small separation of the binary pair indicates that the disk around the primary component is likely clearing from the outside in, explaining the high accretion rate of the system., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A on 09-07-2020

We present observations of the young multiple system UX Tauri to look for circumstellar disks and for signs of dynamical interactions. We obtained SPHERE/IRDIS deep differential polarization images in the J and H bands. We also used ALMA archival CO data. Large extended spirals are well detected in scattered light coming out of the disk of UX Tau A. The southern spiral forms a bridge between UX Tau A and C. These spirals, including the bridge connecting the two stars, all have a CO (3-2) counterpart seen by ALMA. The disk of UX Tau C is detected in scattered light. It is much smaller than the disk of UX Tau A and has a major axis along a different position angle, suggesting a misalignment. We performed PHANTOM SPH hydrodynamical models to interpret the data. The scattered light spirals, CO emission spirals and velocity patterns of the rotating disks, and the compactness of the disk of UX Tau C all point to a scenario in which UX Tau A has been perturbed very recently (about 1000 years) by the close passage of UX Tau C., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics Letters. The innermost astronomical unit in protoplanetary disks is a key region for stellar and planet formation, as exoplanet searches have shown a large occurrence of close-in planets that are located within the first au around their host star. We aim to reveal the morphology of the disk inner rim using near-infrared interferometric observations with milli-arcsecond resolution provided by infrared interferometry. We provide reconstructed images of 15 objects selected from the Herbig AeBe survey carried out with PIONIER at the VLTI, using SPARCO. We find that 40% of the systems are centrosymmetric at the angular resolution of the observations. For the rest of the objects, we find evidence for asymmetric emission due to moderate-to-strong inclination of a disk-like structure for 30% of the objects and noncentrosymmetric morphology due to a nonaxisymmetric and possibly variable environment (30%). Among the systems with a disk-like structure, 20% show a resolved dust-free cavity. The image reconstruction process is a powerful tool to reveal complex disk inner rim morphologies. At the angular resolution reached by near-infrared interferometric observations, most of the images are compatible with a centrally peaked emission (no cavity). For the most resolved targets, image reconstruction reveals morphologies that cannot be reproduced by generic parametric models. Moreover, the nonaxisymmetric disks show that the spatial resolution probed by optical interferometers makes the observations of the near-infrared emission sensitive to temporal evolution with a time-scale down to a few weeks. The evidence of nonaxisymmetric emission that cannot be explained by simple inclination and radiative transfer effects requires alternative explanations, such as a warping of the inner disks. We present evidence for localised deviations from Keplerian rotation, i.e., velocity "kinks", in 8 of 18 circumstellar disks observed by the DSHARP program: DoAr 25, Elias 2-27, GW Lup, HD 143006, HD 163296, IM Lup, Sz 129 and WaOph 6. Most of the kinks are detected over a small range in both radial extent and velocity, suggesting a planetary origin, but for some of them foreground contamination prevents us from measuring their spatial and velocity extent. Because of the DSHARP limited spectral resolution and signal-to-noise in the 12CO J=2-1 line, as well as cloud contamination, the kinks are usually detected in only one spectral channel, and will require confirmation. The strongest circumstantial evidence for protoplanets in the absence of higher spectral resolution data and additional tracers is that, upon deprojection, we find that all of the candidate planets lie within a gap and/or at the end of a spiral detected in dust continuum emission. Context. PDS 70 is a young (5.4 Myr), nearby (~113 pc) star hosting a known transition disk with a large gap. Recent observations with SPHERE and NACO in the near-infrared (NIR) allowed us to detect a planetary mass companion, PDS70b, within the disk cavity. Moreover, observations in H_alpha with MagAO and MUSE revealed emission associated to PDS70b and to another new companion candidate, PDS70c, at a larger separation from the star. Aims. Our aim is to confirm the discovery of the second planet PDS70c using SPHERE at VLT, to further characterize its physical properties, and search for additional point sources in this young planetary system. Methods. We re-analyzed archival SPHERE NIR observations and obtained new data in Y, J, H and K spectral bands for a total of four different epochs. The data were reduced using the data reduction and handling pipeline and the SPHERE data center. We then applied custom routines (e.g. ANDROMEDA and PACO) to subtract the starlight. Results. We re-detect both PDS 70 b and c and confirm that PDS70c is gravitationally bound to the star. We estimate this second planet to be less massive than 5 M Jup and with a T_eff around 900 K. Also, it has a low gravity with log g between 3.0 and 3.5 dex. In addition, a third object has been identified at short separation (~0.12") from the star and gravitationally bound to the star. Its spectrum is however very blue, so that we are probably seeing stellar light reflected by dust and our analysis seems to demonstrate that it is a feature of the inner disk. We, however, cannot completely exclude the possibility that it is a planetary mass object enshrouded by a dust envelope. In this latter case, its mass should be of the order of few tens of M_Earth. Theory surrounding the origin of the dust-laden winds from evolved stars remains mired in controversy. Characterizing the formation loci and the dust distribution within approximately the first stellar radius above the surface is crucial for understanding the physics that underlie the mass-loss phenomenon. By exploiting interferometric polarimetry, we derive the fundamental parameters that govern the dust structure at the wind base of a red supergiant. We present near-infrared aperture-masking observations of Betelgeuse in polarimetric mode obtained with the NACO/SAMPol instrument. We used both parametric models and radiative transfer simulations to predict polarimetric differential visibility data and compared them to SPHERE/ZIMPOL measurements. Using a thin dust shell model, we report the discovery of a dust halo that is located at only 0.5 R$_{\star}$ above the photosphere (i.e. an inner radius of the dust halo of 1.5 R$_{\star}$). By fitting the data under the assumption of Mie scattering, we estimate the grain size and density for various dust species. By extrapolating to the visible wavelengths using radiative transfer simulations, we compare our model with SPHERE/ZIMPOL data and find that models based on dust mixtures that are dominated by forsterite are most favored. We still do not understand how planets form, or why extra-solar planetary systems are so different from our own solar system. But the last few years have dramatically changed our view of the discs of gas and dust around young stars. Observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and extreme adaptive-optics systems have revealed that most --- if not all --- discs contain substructure, including rings and gaps, spirals, azimuthal dust concentrations, and shadows cast by misaligned inner discs. These features have been interpreted as signatures of newborn protoplanets, but the exact origin is unknown. Here we report the kinematic detection of a few Jupiter-mass planet located in a gas and dust gap at 130 au in the disc surrounding the young star HD 97048. An embedded planet can explain both the disturbed Keplerian flow of the gas, detected in CO lines, and the gap detected in the dust disc at the same radius. We present the first observational evidence for a circumplanetary disk around the protoplanet PDS~70~b, based on a new spectrum in the $K$ band acquired with VLT/SINFONI. We tested three hypotheses to explain the spectrum: Atmospheric emission from the planet with either (1) a single value of extinction or (2) variable extinction, and (3) a combined atmospheric and circumplanetary disk model. Goodness-of-fit indicators favour the third option, suggesting circumplanetary material contributing excess thermal emission --- most prominent at $\lambda \gtrsim 2.3 \mu$m. Inferred accretion rates ($\sim 10^{-7.8}$--$10^{-7.3} M_J$ yr$^{-1}$) are compatible with observational constraints based on the H$\alpha$ and Br$\gamma$ lines. For the planet, we derive an effective temperature of 1500--1600 K, surface gravity $\log(g)\sim 4.0$, radius $\sim 1.6 R_J$, mass $\sim 10 M_J$, and possible thick clouds. Models with variable extinction lead to slightly worse fits. The scattering properties of the dust originating from debris discs are still poorly known. The analysis of scattered light is however a powerful remote-sensing tool to understand the physical properties of dust particles orbiting other stars. Scattered light is indeed widely used to characterise the properties of cometary dust in the solar system. We aim to measure the morphology and scattering properties of the dust from the debris ring around HR4796A in polarised optical light. We obtained high-contrast polarimetric images of HR4796A in the wavelength range 600-900nm with the SPHERE / ZIMPOL instrument on the Very Large Telescope. We measured for the first time the polarised phase function of the dust in a debris system over a wide range of scattering angles in the optical. We confirm that it is incompatible with dust particles being compact spheres under the assumption of the Mie theory, and propose alternative scenarios compatible with the observations, such as particles with irregular surface roughness or aggregate particles., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Transition discs are prime targets to look for protoplanets and study planet-disc interactions. We present VLT/SINFONI observations of PDS~70, a transition disc with a recently claimed embedded protoplanet. We take advantage of the angular and spectral diversity present in our data for an optimal PSF modeling and subtraction using principal component analysis (PCA). We report the redetection of PDS 70 b, both the front and far side of the outer disc edge, and the detection of several extended features in the annular gap. We compare spectral differential imaging applied before (PCA-SADI), and after (PCA-ASDI) angular differential imaging. Our tests suggest that PCA-SADI better recovers extended features, while PCA-ASDI is more sensitive to point sources. We adapted the negative fake companion (NEGFC) technique to infer the astrometry of the companion, and derived $r = 193.5 \pm 4.9 \mathrm{mas}$ and PA = 158.7deg $\pm$ 3.0deg. We used both NEGFC and ANDROMEDA to infer the $K$-band spectro-photometry of the protoplanet, and found results consistent with recent VLT/SPHERE observations, except for their 2018/02 epoch measurement in the $K2$ filter. Finally, we derived an upper limit of $\dot{M_b} < 1.26 \times 10^{-7} \big[ \frac{5 M_{\rm Jup}}{M_b} \big] \big[ \frac{R_b}{R_{\rm Jup}}\big] M_{\rm Jup} $ yr$^{-1}$ for the accretion rate of the companion based on an adaptation of PCA-SADI/PCA-ASDI around the Br$\gamma$ line., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Consistent modeling of protoplanetary disks requires the simultaneous solution of both continuum and line radiative transfer, heating/cooling balance between dust and gas and, of course, chemistry. Such models depend on panchromatic observations that can provide a complete description of the physical and chemical properties and energy balance of protoplanetary systems. Along these lines we present a homogeneous, panchromatic collection of data on a sample of 85 T Tauri and Herbig Ae objects for which data cover a range from X-rays to centimeter wavelengths. Datasets consist of photometric measurements, spectra, along with results from the data analysis such as line fluxes from atomic and molecular transitions. Additional properties resulting from modeling of the sources such as disc mass and shape parameters. dust size and PAH properties are also provided for completeness. Targets were selected based on their properties data availability. Data from more than 50 different telescopes and facilities were retrieved and combined in homogeneous datasets directly from public data archives or after being extracted from more than 100 published articles. X-ray data for a subset of 56 sources represent an exception as they were reduced from scratch and are presented here for the first time. Compiled datasets along with a subset of continuum and emission-line models are stored in a dedicated database and distributed through a publicly accessible online system. All datasets contain metadata descriptors that allow to backtrack them to their original resources. The graphical user interface of the online system allows the user to visually inspect individual objects but also compare between datasets and models. Context. The mechanisms governing the opening of cavities in transition disks are not fully understood. Several processes have been proposed but their occurrence rate is still unknown. Aims. We present spatially resolved observations of two transition disks and aim at constraining their vertical and radial structure using multiwavelength observations. Methods. We have obtained near-IR scattered light observations with VLT/SPHERE of the transition disks J1608 and J1852. We complement our datasets with ALMA observations and with unresolved photometric observations covering a wide range of wavelengths. We performed radiative transfer modeling to analyze the morphology of the disks and compare the results with a sample of 20 other transition disks observed with both SPHERE and ALMA. Results. The scattered light image of J1608 reveals a very inclined disk, with two bright lobes and a large cavity. J1852 shows an inner ring extending beyond the coronagraphic radius up to 15au, a gap and a second ring at 42au. Our radiative transfer model of J1608 indicates that the millimeter-sized grains are less extended vertically and radially than the micron-sized grains, indicating advanced settling and radial drift. We find good agreement with the observations of J1852 with a similar model, but due to the low inclination of the system, the model remains partly degenerate. The analysis of 22 transition disks shows that, in general, the cavities observed in scattered light are smaller than the ones detected at millimeter wavelengths. Conclusions. The analysis of a sample of transition disks indicates that the small grains can flow inward of the region where millimeter grains are trapped. While 15 out of the 22 cavities in our sample could be explained by a planet of less than 13 Jupiter masses, the others either require the presence of a more massive companion or of several low-mass planets., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Context: The complex system HD 100453 AB with a ring-like circumprimary disk and two spiral arms, one of which is pointing to the secondary, is a good laboratory to test spiral formation theories. Aims: To quantify the interaction of HD 100453 B with the circumprimary disk. Methods: Using ALMA band 6 dust continuum and CO isotopologue observations we study the HD 100453 AB system with a spatial resolution of 0.09" x 0.17" at 234 GHz. We use SPH simulations and orbital fitting to investigate the tidal influence of the companion on the disk. Results: We resolve the continuum emission around HD 100453 A into a disk between 0.22" and 0.40" with an inclination of 29.5 deg. and a position angle of 151.0 deg., an unresolved inner disk, and excess mm emission cospatial with the northern spiral arm which was previously detected using scattered light observations. We also detect CO emission from 7 au (well within the disk cavity) out to 1.10", i.e., overlapping with HD 100453 B at least in projection. The outer CO disk PA and inclination differ by up to 10 deg. from the values found for the inner CO disk and the dust continuum emission, which we interpret as due to gravitational interaction with HD 100453 B. Both the spatial extent of the CO disk and the detection of mm emission at the same location as the northern spiral arm are in disagreement with the previously proposed near co-planar orbit of HD 100453 B. Conclusions: We conclude that HD 100453 B has an orbit that is significantly misaligned with the circumprimary disk. Because it is unclear whether such an orbit can explain the observed system geometry we highlight an alternative scenario that explains all detected disk features where another, (yet) undetected, low mass close companion within the disk cavity, shepherds a misaligned inner disk whose slowly precessing shadows excite the spiral arms., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We detect the accreting low-mass companion HD142527B at a separation of 73 mas (11.4 au) from the star. No other companions with mass greater than 10 MJ are visible in the field of view of IFS (\sim 100 au centered on the star) or in the IRDIS field of view (\sim 400 au centered on the star). Measurements from IFS, SAM IFS, and IRDIS suggest an M6 spectral type for HD142527B, with an uncertainty of one spectral subtype, compatible with an object of M=0.11 \pm 0.06 MSun and R=0.15 \pm 0.07 RSun. The determination of the mass remains a challenge using contemporary evolutionary models, as they do not account for the energy input due to accretion from infalling material. We consider that the spectral type of the secondary may also be earlier than the type we derived from IFS spectra. From dynamical considerations, we further constrain the mass to 0.26^{+0.16}_{-0.14} MSun , which is consistent with both our spectroscopic analysis and the values reported in the literature. Following previous methods, the lower and upper dynamical mass values correspond to a spectral type between M2.5 and M5.5 for the companion. By fitting the astrometric points, we find the following orbital parameters: a period of P=35-137 yr; an inclination of i=121-130 deg.; , a value of Omega=124-135 deg for the longitude of node, and an 68% confidence interval of \sim 18 - 57 au for the separation at periapsis. Eccentricity and time at periapsis passage exhibit two groups of values: \sim0.2-0.45 and \sim0.45-0.7 for e, and \sim 2015-2020 and \sim2020-2022 for T_0. Aims: We want to detect and quantify observables related to accretion processes occurring locally in circumstellar disks, which could be attributed to young forming planets. We focus on objects known to host protoplanet candidates and/or disk structures thought to be the result of interactions with planets. Methods: We analyzed observations of 6 young stars (age $3.5-10$ Myr) and their surrounding environments with the SPHERE/ZIMPOL instrument on the VLT in the H$\alpha$ filter (656 nm) and a nearby continuum filter (644.9 nm). Results: We re-detect the known accreting M-star companion HD142527 B with the highest published signal to noise to date in both H$\alpha$ and the continuum. We derive new astrometry ($r = 62.8^{+2.1}_{-2.7}$ mas and $\text{PA} = (98.7\,\pm1.8)^\circ$) and photometry ($\Delta$N_Ha=$6.3^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ mag, $\Delta$B_Ha=$6.7\pm0.2$ mag and $\Delta$Cnt_Ha=$7.3^{+0.3}_{-0.2}$ mag) for the companion in agreement with previous studies, and estimate its mass accretion rate ($\dot{M}\approx1-2\,\times10^{-10}\,M_\odot\text{ yr}^{-1}$). A faint point-like source around HD135344 B (SAO206462) is also investigated, but a second deeper observation is required to reveal its nature. No other companions are detected. In the framework of our assumptions we estimate detection limits at the locations of companion candidates around HD100546, HD169142 and MWC758 and calculate that processes involving H$\alpha$ fluxes larger than $\sim8\times10^{-14}-10^{-15}\,\text{erg/s/cm}^2$ ($\dot{M}>10^{-10}-10^{-12}\,M_\odot\text{ yr}^{-1}$) can be excluded. Furthermore, flux upper limits of $\sim10^{-14}-10^{-15}\,\text{erg/s/cm}^2$ ($\dot{M}<10^{-11}-10^{-12}\,M_\odot \text{ yr}^{-1}$) are estimated within the gaps identified in the disks surrounding HD135344B and TW Hya., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A (20 pages, 18 figures)

The European FP7 project DIANA has performed a coherent analysis of a large set of observations from protoplanetary disks by means of thermo-chemical disk models. The collected data include extinction-corrected stellar UV and X-ray input spectra (as seen by the disk), photometric fluxes, low and high resolution spectra, interferometric data, emission line fluxes, line velocity profiles and line maps. We define and apply a standardized modelling procedure to simultaneously fit all these data by state-of-the-art modelling codes (ProDiMo, MCFOST, MCMax) which solve the continuum and line radiative transfer, disk chemistry, and the heating & cooling balance for both the gas and the dust. We allow for up to two radial disk zones to obtain our best-fitting models that have about 20 free parameters. This approach is novel and unique in its completeness and level of consistency. In this paper, we present the results from pure SED fitting for 27 objects and from the all inclusive DIANA-standard models for 14 objects. We fit most infrared to millimeter emission line fluxes within a factor better than 3, simultaneously with SED, PAH features and radial brightness profiles extracted from images at various wavelengths. Our analysis shows a number of Herbig Ae and T Tauri stars with very cold and massive outer disks which are situated at least partly in the shadow of a tall and gas-rich inner disk. The disk masses derived are often in excess to previously published values, since these disks are partially optically thick even at millimeter wavelength and so cold that they emit less than in the Rayleigh-Jeans limit. Some line observations cannot be reproduced by the models, probably caused by foreground cloud absorption or object variability. We present ALMA images of the sub-mm continuum polarisation and spectral index of the protoplanetary ringed disk HD163296. The polarisation fraction at 870{\mu}m is measured to be ~0.9% in the central core and generally increases with radius along the disk major axis. It peaks in the gaps between the dust rings, and the largest value (~4%) is found between rings 1 and 2. The polarisation vectors are aligned with the disk minor axis in the central core, but become more azimuthal in the gaps, twisting by up to +/-9degrees in the gap between rings 1 and 2. These general characteristics are consistent with a model of self-scattered radiation in the ringed structure, without requiring an additional dust alignment mechanism. The 870/1300{\mu}m dust spectral index exhibits minima in the centre and the inner rings, suggesting these regions have high optical depths. We introduce a new modelling framework called FLiTs to simulate infrared line emission spectra from protoplanetary discs. This paper focuses on the mid-IR spectral region between 9.7 um to 40 um for T Tauri stars. The generated spectra contain several tens of thousands of molecular emission lines of H2O, OH, CO, CO2, HCN, C2H2, H2 and a few other molecules, as well as the forbidden atomic emission lines of SI, SII, SIII, SiII, FeII, NeII, NeIII, ArII and ArIII. In contrast to previously published works, we do not treat the abundances of the molecules nor the temperature in the disc as free parameters, but use the complex results of detailed 2D ProDiMo disc models concerning gas and dust temperature structure, and molecular concentrations. FLiTs computes the line emission spectra by ray tracing in an efficient, fast and reliable way. The results are broadly consistent with R=600 Spitzer/IRS observational data of T Tauri stars concerning line strengths, colour, and line ratios. In order to achieve that agreement, however, we need to assume either a high gas/dust mass ratio of order 1000, or the presence of illuminated disc walls at distances of a few au. The molecules in these walls cannot be photo-dissociated easily by UV because of the large densities in the walls which favour their re-formation. Most observable molecular emission lines are found to be optically thick, rendering a standard analysis with column densities difficult. We find that the difference between gas and dust temperatures in the disc surface is important for the line formation. We briefly discuss the effects of C/O ratio and choice of chemical rate network on these results. Our analysis offers new ways to infer the chemical and temperature structure of T Tauri discs from future JWST/MIRI observations, and to possibly detect secondary illuminated disc walls based on their specific mid-IR molecular signature., Comment: accepted by A&A, 13 figures, 4 tables

Young circumstellar disks are of prime interest to understand the physical and chemical conditions under which planet formation takes place. Only very few detections of planet candidates within these disks exist, and most of them are currently suspected to be disk features. In this context, the transition disk around the young star PDS 70 is of particular interest, due to its large gap identified in previous observations, indicative of ongoing planet formation. We aim to search for the presence of planets and search for disk structures indicative for disk-planet interactions and other evolutionary processes. We analyse new and archival near-infrared (NIR) images of the transition disk PDS 70 obtained with the VLT/SPHERE, VLT/NaCo and Gemini/NICI instruments in polarimetric differential imaging (PDI) and angular differential imaging (ADI) modes. We detect a point source within the gap of the disk at about 195 mas (about 22 au) projected separation. The detection is confirmed at five different epochs, in three filter bands and using different instruments. The astrometry results in an object of bound nature, with high significance. The comparison of the measured magnitudes and colours to evolutionary tracks suggests that the detection is a companion of planetary mass. We confirm the detection of a large gap of about 54 au in size within the disk in our scattered light images, and detect a signal from an inner disk component. We find that its spatial extent is very likely smaller than about 17 au in radius. The images of the outer disk show evidence of a complex azimuthal brightness distribution which may in part be explained by Rayleigh scattering from very small grains. Future observations of this system at different wavelengths and continuing astrometry will allow us to test theoretical predictions regarding planet-disk interactions, planetary atmospheres and evolutionary models., Comment: 23 pages, accepted by A&A

Discs of gas and dust surrounding young stars are the birthplace of planets. However, direct detection of protoplanets forming within discs has proved elusive to date. We present the detection of a large, localized deviation from Keplerian velocity in the protoplanetary disc surrounding the young star HD163296. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations at 0.3 arcsec-resolution of EX Lup, the prototype of the EXor class of outbursting pre-main sequence stars. The circumstellar disk of EX Lup is resolved for the first time in 1.3mm continuum emission and in the $J$=2--1 spectral line of three isotopologues of CO. At the spatial resolution and sensitivity achieved, the compact dust continuum disk shows no indications of clumps, fragments, or asymmetries above 5-sigma level. Radiative transfer modeling constrains the characteristic radius of the dust disk to 23 au and a total dust mass of 1.0$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_\odot$ (33 M_earth), similar to other EXor sources. The $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O line emission trace the disk rotation and are used to constrain the disk geometry, kinematics, and a total gas disk mass of 5.1$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_\odot$. The $^{12}$CO emission extends out to a radius of 200 au and is asymmetric, with one side deviating from Keplerian rotation. We detect blue-shifted, $^{12}$CO arc-like emission located 0.8 arcsec to the north-west, and spatially disconnected from the disk emission. We interpret this extended structure as the brightened walls of a cavity excavated by an outflow, which are more commonly seen in FUor sources. Such outflows have also been seen in the borderline FU/EXor object V1647 Ori, but not towards EXor objects. Our detection provides evidence that the outflow phenomenon persists into the EXor phase, suggesting that FUor and EXor objects are a continuous population in which outflow activity declines with age, with transitional objects such as EX Lup and V1647 Ori.

Debris disks are the intrinsic by-products of the star and planet formation processes. Most likely due to instrumental limitations and their natural faintness, little is known about debris disks around low-mass stars, especially when it comes to spatially resolved observations. We present new VLT/SPHERE IRDIS Dual-Polarization Imaging (DPI) observations in which we detect the dust ring around the M2 spectral type star TWA\,7. Combined with additional Angular Differential Imaging observations we aim at a fine characterization of the debris disk and setting constraints on the presence of low-mass planets. We model the SPHERE DPI observations and constrain the location of the small dust grains, as well as the spectral energy distribution of the debris disk, using the results inferred from the observations, and perform simple N-body simulations. We find that the dust density distribution peaks at 25 au, with a very shallow outer power-law slope, and that the disk has an inclination of 13 degrees with a position angle of 90 degrees East of North. We also report low signal-to-noise detections of an outer belt at a distance of ~52 au from the star, of a spiral arm in the Southern side of the star, and of a possible dusty clump at 3.9 au. These findings seem to persist over timescales of at least a year. Using the intensity images, we do not detect any planets in the close vicinity of the star, but the sensitivity reaches Jovian planet mass upper limits. We find that the SED is best reproduced with an inner disk at 7 au and another belt at 25 au. We report the detections of several unexpected features in the disk around TWA\,7. A yet undetected 100 M$_\oplus$ planet with a semi-major axis at 20-30 au could possibly explain the outer belt as well as the spiral arm. Transition disks are considered sites of ongoing planet formation, and their dust and gas distributions could be signposts of embedded planets. The transition disk around the T Tauri star RY Lup has an inner dust cavity and displays a strong silicate emission feature. Using high-resolution imaging we study the disk geometry, including non-axisymmetric features, and its surface dust grain, to gain a better understanding of the disk evolutionary process. Moreover, we search for companion candidates, possibly connected to the disk. We obtained high-contrast and high angular resolution data in the near-infrared with the VLT/SPHERE extreme adaptive optics instrument whose goal is to study the planet formation by detecting and characterizing these planets and their formation environments through direct imaging. We performed polarimetric imaging of the RY~Lup disk with IRDIS (at 1.6 microns), and obtained intensity images with the IRDIS dual-band imaging camera simultaneously with the IFS spectro-imager (0.9-1.3 microns). We resolved for the first time the scattered light from the nearly edge-on circumstellar disk around RY~Lup, at projected separations in the 100 \,au range. The shape of the disk and its sharp features are clearly detectable at wavelengths ranging from 0.9 to 1.6 microns. We show that the observed morphology can be interpreted as spiral arms in the disk. This interpretation is supported by in-depth numerical simulations. We also demonstrate that these features can be produced by one planet interacting with the disk. We also detect several point sources which are classified as probable background objects.
