The present meta-analysis integrates the results of studies on associations of parenting styles with moral reasoning. The systematic search in electronic databases identified 23 studies that were included in this random-effects meta-analysis. We found a statistically significant, but small positive, concurrent association of authoritative parenting with higher moral reasoning, while the reverse was found for authoritarian parenting. No significant associations were found for permissive parenting, and numbers of studies were too small for identifying significant associations of neglectful parenting with moral reasoning, as well as cross-lagged effects of parenting styles on longitudinal change in moral reasoning. The size of the associations varied, in part, by publication status, educational status, and quality of assessing moral reasoning. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

The objective of the study was to analyse whether young people with physical disabilities have lower global self-esteem and less positive domain-specific self-concepts than peers without physical disabilities, as well as which processes protect their self-esteem. Data were collected from 179 German adolescents with physical disabilities and 296 adolescents without physical disabilities. Both groups did not differ in global self-esteem. However, adolescents with physical disabilities had lower self-concepts of athletic competence and social acceptance. Perceived athletic competence tended to show weaker associations with self-esteem in adolescents with physical disabilities than in the control group. Regarding processes of protecting self-esteem, adolescents with physical disabilities reported higher levels of emotional support when dealing with problems, a stronger tendency to present oneself in a favourable light, and stronger selection of goals that are easily attainable. A regression analysis indicated that a lower self-esteem of young people with physical disabilities compared to the control group emerged after statistically controlling for the elevated levels of self-protective processes in the former group. We conclude that social support, goal adjustments, and positive self-presentation protect the reports on self-esteem in young people with physical disabilities. Practitioners should be sensitive to the risk for biased self-reports when assessing self-esteem.

Although most individuals experience expectation violations in their educational years, individuals' coping strategies differ depending on situational and dispositional characteristics with potentially decisive influence on educational outcomes. As a situational characteristic, optimism bias indicates that individuals tend to update their expectations after unexpected positive feedback and to maintain their expectations after unexpected negative feedback. As a dispositional characteristic, a higher need for cognitive closure (NCC) indicates that individuals tend to both update (accommodation) and try to confirm expectations (assimilation) after unexpected negative feedback. To better understand mechanisms behind optimism bias and context-dependent effects of NCC in an educational context, we included controllability (attribution of success/failure to internal or external causes) and self-enhancement (amplifying positive self-relevant aspects) in an experimental case vignettes study. Our sample of n = 249 students was divided into four experimental groups (high/low controllability × positive/negative valence) and read four different case vignettes referring to expectation violations in an educational context. MANCOVA revealed that individuals updated their expectations after unexpected positive feedback only with stronger (vs. weaker) self-enhancement and that individuals maintained their expectations after unexpected negative feedback in controllable (vs. uncontrollable) situations. Furthermore, interindividual differences in NCC interacted with controllability in predicting expectation update. We conclude that considering the influences of controllability and self-enhancement, we can better understand and evaluate the adaptivity of the optimism bias and context-dependent effects of NCC in an educational context. The present meta-analysis assessed concurrent and longitudinal associations between parental educational expectations and child achievement, and factors that mediate the effect of expectations on achievement. A systematic search in electronic databases identified 169 studies that were included in a random-effects meta-analysis. We found small to moderate bivariate cross-sectional (r = 0.30) and longitudinal associations (r = 0.28) between parental expectation and achievement which persisted after statistically controlling for socioeconomic status. Associations varied, in part, by children's age, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, matching of type of expectations and achievement, type of expectation assessed, publication status, and informant. The analysis of cross-lagged effects indicated that parental expectations predicted change in child achievement, thus indicating that expectations had an effect over and above the effect of prior achievement. Effects of expectations on change in achievement were even stronger (r = 0.15) than the effects of achievement on change in expectation (r = 0.09). Parental expectations tended to be higher than the child achievement. Associations between expectations and achievement were partially mediated by educational expectations in the offspring, child academic engagement, and academic self-concept, and to a lesser extent, by parental achievement-supportive behaviors. We conclude that parents are recommended to communicate positive educational expectations to their children. The transmission of positive expectations to the offspring and the encouragement of academic engagement seem to be more effective in realizing parental expectations than parental behavioral academic involvement such as checking homework and staying in contact with teachers.

The experiment analyzed reactions of 115 first- to fourth-graders after realizing that they performed worse than they expected in a computer game. Based on the VIOLEX model of expectation violation, we assessed immunization against achievement feedback, assimilation (striving to increase performance), and accommodation (willingness for expectation change). Students decreased their expectations for the next round of the game after getting feedback indicating that they performed worse than expected, and younger students decreased their expectation more than older students did. After giving them some time for thinking about their achievement (and for finding potential excuses for the lower-than-expected performance), younger students slightly increased their expectation, while older students showed a further drop in expectation. Analyses of verbal responses showed that immunizing against the discrepant feedback was followed by an increase in expectations, whereas assimilative and accommodative tendencies did not predict persistence and change in expectations. Conclusions are drawn for future research.

We compare structures and contents of psychology programmes from countries with developing and advanced economies. Respondents from 49 countries completed a survey of the International Union of Psychological Science on psychology education and training. In general, there are more similarities than differences between countries with developing and advanced economies. Nonetheless, large differences emerge with regard to the availability of international teaching resources. The transition rate from the lowest academic degree to programmes at the next level is much lower in countries with developing economies than in countries with advanced economies (25 per cent vs. 70 per cent). In addition, programmes from the former countries have higher student-faculty ratios and use lab sessions, seminars and tutorials less often. Differential and biological psychology/neuropsychology is less often taught in the former countries. In addition, there is larger variability of the quality of programmes within countries with developing economies. Conclusions are drawn for improving psychology education and training.

The aim of the three different studies presented was the development and evaluation of the Differentiated Attitudes Towards Inclusion Scale as a valid, reliable and economic instrument for the measurement of teachers' attitudes towards the inclusion of students with certain special educational needs (SEN). In a sample of student teachers, exploratory factor analyses on the versions of the questionnaire with focus on Learning Disabilities (LD) and Emotional and Behavioural Disturbances (EBD), respectively, indicated four first-order factors. These factors represent attitudes concerning the social and academic impact of inclusive education on students with and without SEN. They can be combined in a higher-order model with one general second order factor. Using confirmatory factor analyses, this factorial structure was replicated in another student teacher sample and in a sample of primary and secondary school teachers. Furthermore, attitudes towards the inclusion of students with EBD were significantly more negative than those towards the inclusion of students with LD. The findings emphasise the need to distinguish between certain SEN when measuring teachers' attitudes towards inclusion. Potential applications of the new measure are discussed.

The goal of the present meta-analysis was to compare effects of reminiscence interventions on depression and anxiety across different target groups. Systematic search in electronic data bases and cross-referencing identified 195 randomized controlled trials that were included in random-effects meta-analysis. Reminiscence interventions resulted, on average, in moderate improvement of depressive symptoms and small-to-moderate improvements of anxiety symptoms. Life review therapy for individuals with elevated psychological symptoms tended to be more effective (with moderate to strong improvements) than life review with nonclinical samples and simple reminiscence. Effects were similar for individuals with cognitive impairment, physical illness and general community-based samples. Intervention effects varied, in part, by intervention length, kind of control condition, publication status, and region where the study was conducted. We conclude that reminiscence interventions should be offered for all adults interested in reflecting on their past, although adaptations of intervention contents can be made according to the needs of potential participants. Introduction: The study reported here assessed the exploration of identity and commitment to an identity in German adolescents with and without visual impairments. Methods: In total, 178 adolescents with visual impairments (blindness or low vision) and 526 sighted adolescents completed the Ego Identity Process Questionnaire. Results: The levels of identity exploration and making commitments, as well as the distribution of identity statuses, did not differ between the two groups. However, adolescents with congenital visual impairments showed lower levels of identity exploration than their peers with acquired visual impairments. In addition, more severe disability was associated with less exploration of identity. Furthermore, levels of identity exploration and commitment varied by age, parental education, levels of social support, and levels of problem behavior. Discussion: The findings indicate that adolescents with visual impairments do not fall behind sighted adolescents in developing a sense of identity. Implications for practitioners: Adolescents who are congenitally blind or have a high level of disability may need support in exploring and accessing information on future opportunities.

The present study compared 124 adolescents from special schools for students with emotional and behavioural disturbances (EBDs) and 133 regular schooled adolescents with regard to their perceived maternal behaviour. It was also tested longitudinally whether effects of maternal parenting behaviour on subsequent externalising behaviour vary as a function of school type. The two groups did not differ from each other with regard to perceived maternal parenting behaviour. However, an interaction effect of school type and parenting behaviour on externalising behaviour was found. Maternal warmth/support predicted a decrease and maternal strict control an increase in subsequent problem behaviour only for adolescents from special schools. The importance of parenting programmes especially for parents of adolescents attending special schools for students with EBD is discussed.

The present meta-analysis integrates research from 1,435 studies on associations of parenting dimensions and styles with externalizing symptoms in children and adolescents. Parental warmth, behavioral control, autonomy granting, and an authoritative parenting style showed very small to small negative concurrent and longitudinal associations with externalizing problems. In contrast, harsh control, psychological control, authoritarian, permissive, and neglectful parenting were associated with higher levels of externalizing problems. The strongest associations were observed for harsh control and psychological control. Parental warmth, behavioral control, harsh control, psychological control, autonomy granting, authoritative, and permissive parenting predicted change in externalizing problems over time, with associations of externalizing problems with warmth, behavioral control, harsh control, psychological control, and authoritative parenting being bidirectional. Moderating effects of sampling, child's age, form of externalizing problems, rater of parenting and externalizing problems, quality of measures, and publication status were identified. Implications for future research and practice are discussed.

Social development may vary depending on contextual factors, such as attending a day school or a boarding school. The present study compares students from these school types with regard to the achievement of specific social goals, perceived social support, and reported prosocial behaviour. A sample of 701 students was examined. Students from boarding schools reported higher success in gaining autonomy from parents and forming romantic relationships than students from day schools. However, adolescents from day schools reported higher levels of peer-group integration than students from boarding schools. Compared with students from day schools, students from boarding schools perceived more support from their teachers, but less support from their parents. No difference in prosocial behaviour was found between the two groups. We conclude that some students from boarding schools need support in gaining access to a peer group. In addition, measures are suggested for promoting parental support of students from boarding schools.

First-year students often adopt health risk behaviors during their first semester such as increased consumption of unhealthy food, decreased physical activity, and increased alcohol use. Expectations, social tie's efforts to motivate behavior, and coresidence with parents can influence said behaviors. We assessed how students' health behaviors and expectations change over the first semester, and how the aforementioned factors influence the maintenance or change of behavior and expectations. A longitudinal survey design was implemented. A total of N = 163 German first-year students (81% female; 18% male; 1% non-binary; Mage = 21.20, SD = 2.66) completed online questionnaires, including the NCHRBS and AUDIT, during the Covid-19 pandemic at the beginning (November 2020) and after the end (May 2021) of their first semester. Current and expected food consumption and physical activity became healthier over time. The current and expected number of drinks consumed per month increased. Change in expectations for physical activity, number of drinks and binge drinking were predicted by the initial respective behavior. The number of drinks and expected physical activity became unhealthier in relation to reported initial parental influence to drink and to be physically inactive. Moving out of the parental home predicted an increase in current and expected number of drinks and in current and expected binge drinking. These effects of moving out were not mediated by perceived parental or peer influence. Interventions should target these behaviors and expectations during the first semester and address parental influence on physical activity and alcohol use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
