29. Development of an integrated modelling framework to evaluate impacts of pressures on habitat conditions and riverine biota.

Abstract

It is becoming extremely challenging to protect the structural and functional integrity of freshwater ecosystems, as many ecological systems face pressures from climate change, population growth and other environmental impacts. However, existing approaches of assessing impacts of external stressors to habitat conditions often neglect the long‐term hydrological changes. This study aimed to develop an integrated modelling framework to assess impacts of different stressors on reach‐scale habitat conditions for benthic macroinvertebrates in a temperate lowland river in central Poland. We coupled hydrological (SWAT+), hydraulic (HEC‐RAS 1D and SRH‐2D) and habitat (CASiMiR) models to predict the response of habitat suitability for the functional group of filter feeders to changes in the catchment for a 135‐m section of the Jeziorka river. Setting up and calibrating individual models required extensive field data collection (e.g., bathymetry field surveys, gauging water levels, discharge and flow velocity measurements and biological sampling). The performance of individual models in simulating discharge, water levels and depth/flow velocity was assessed as satisfactory according to literature. The modelling chain was then applied to compare the effects of three flow scenarios (average, low and high flows). The results showed an overall high value of hydraulic habitat suitability index for filter feeders, with moderately and severely lower values for low and high flow scenario, respectively. The implemented modelling framework performed well could be applied to examine the impacts of climate change and other anthropogenic stressors on reach‐scale habitat conditions. 47. Using SWAT+ to support optimal strategies to retain and re-use water and nutrients in small agricultural catchments in Europe

Abstract

Natural/Small Water Retention Measures (NSWRMs) can help to mitigate conflicts among agricultural, human and environmental water uses. They can significantly contribute to an improved water quality and an increased resilience against floods and droughts. Although potentials for water and nutrient retention are well studied, knowledge on the effectiveness of different measures is still lacking. The EU Horizon2020 project OPTAIN aims to identify efficient techniques for the retention and reuse of water and nutrients in small agricultural catchments and optimize spatial allocation and combination of NSWRMs based on environmental and economic sustainability indicators.The presentation will focus on the advancements in process-based modeling of NSWRMs using the SWAT+ model. In OPTAIN, we established a modeling protocol aiming to harmonize the SWAT+ model setup process to develop reproducible and transparent model setups and to implement a comprehensive, multi-objective and process-oriented calibration strategy involving the use of both soft and hard data. The newly developed COntiguous object COnnectivity Approach (COCOA) is able to represent features in the landscape at the field scale allowing for a more accurate representation of the measures in the model setup. The second advancement concerns a more realistic simulation of long-term dynamics of crops and a more plausible way of planning farm management operations. Preliminary results for two catchments (Upper Zgłowiączka, Poland and Schwarzer Schöps, Germany) illustrate the implementation of the modeling protocol. We demonstrate the reporting of the simulated catchment water balance and dominant runoff processes and show how selected NSWRMs perform under current and future climate., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

This study presents an application of the SWAT model (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) in two meso-scale catchments in Poland (Upper Narew and Barycz), contrasting in terms of human pressures on water quantity and quality. The main objective was multi-variable and multi-site calibration and validation of the model against daily discharge, sediment and nutrient loads as well as discussion of challenges encountered in calibration phase. Multi-site calibration and validation gave varied results ranging from very good (daily discharge) to acceptable (sediment, nitrogen and phosphorus loads in most of gauges) and rather poor (individual gauges for all variables) in both catchments. The calibrated models enabled spatial quantification of water yield, sediment and nutrient loads, indicating areas of special concern in terms of pollution, as well as estimation of contribution of pollution from different sources, indicating agriculture as the most important source in both catchments. During the calibration process a number of significant issues were encountered: (i) global vs. local parametrization, (ii) simulation of different pools of water quality parameters in reservoirs and streams and (iii) underestimation of NO3-N loads in winter due to farmers practices. Discussion of these issues is hoped to aid SWAT model users in Poland in a deeper understanding of mechanisms of multi-variable and multi-site calibration.
