We provide a comprehensive theoretical study of the radio-frequency (rf) spectra of a two-component Fermi gas with balanced populations in the normal region of the temperature-vs-coupling phase diagram. In particular, rf spectra are analyzed in terms of two characteristic peaks, which can be either distinct or overlapping. On the BEC side of the crossover, these two contributions are associated with a fermionic quasi-particle peak and a bosonic-like contribution due to pairing. On the BCS side of the crossover, the two peaks are instead associated with interactions between particles occurring, respectively, at high or low relative momenta. Through this two-peak analysis, we show how and to what extent the correlation between the widths of the rf spectra and the pair size, previously identified in the superfluid phase at low temperature, can be extended to the normal phase, as well as how the temperature-vs-coupling phase diagram of the BCS-BEC crossover can be partitioned in a number of distinct physical sectors. We calculate the pair susceptibility of an attractive spin-polarized Fermi gas in the normal phase, as a function of the pair momentum. Close to unitarity, we find a strong enhancement of Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing fluctuations over an extended region of the temperature-polarization phase diagram, which manifests itself as a pronounced peak in the pair-momentum distribution at a finite pair momentum. This peak should be amenable to experimental observation at achievable temperatures in a box-like trapping potential, as a fingerprint of FFLO pairing. A detailed description is given of the phase diagram for a two-component unitary Fermi gas with mass and population imbalance, for both homogeneous and trapped systems. This aims at providing quantitative benchmarks for the normal-to-superfluid phase transition of a mass-imbalanced Fermi gas in the temperature-polarization parameter space. A self-consistent t-matrix approach is adopted, which has already proven to accurately describe the thermodynamic properties of the mass and population balanced unitary Fermi gas. In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. A 99, 053617 (2019)], the total number of fermion pairs in a spin-balanced two-component Fermi gas of $^6$Li atoms was experimentally probed in the normal phase above the superfluid critical temperature, in order to investigate the sectors of pseudogap and preformed-pair in the temperature-coupling phase diagram. Here, we present a theoretical account of these experimental results in terms of an ab-initio self-consistent $t$-matrix calculation, which emphasizes the role of the pair-correlation function between opposite-spin fermions at equilibrium. The diagrammatic t-matrix approximation has often been adopted to describe a dilute Fermi gas. This approximation, originally considered by Galitskii for a repulsive inter-particle interaction (Galitskii-1958), has later been widely utilized for an attractive Fermi gas to describe the BCS-BEC crossover from strongly overlapping Cooper pairs in weak coupling to non-overlapping composite bosons in strong coupling. Several variants of the $t$-matrix approximation have been considered in the literature, which are distinguished by the degree of self-consistency allowed in the building blocks of the diagrammatic structure. Here, we perform a systematic and comparative study of all possible variants on the degree of self-consistency for the $t$-matrix approximation in an attractive Fermi gas, which enables us to confront their outcomes for thermodynamic and dynamical quantities on the same footing in an unbiased way. For definiteness, only the normal phase above the superfluid critical temperature is considered. The dispute that can be raised in this context, about the adequateness of introducing progressive degrees of self-consistency over and above the non-self-consistent $t$-matrix approximation for an attractive Fermi gas, parallels the recent interest in the literature on assessing the importance of various degrees of self-consistency in the context of semiconductors and insulators., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures

The static and dynamic properties of the single-chain molecular magnet [Co(hfac)$_2$NITPhOMe] are investigated in the framework of the Ising model with Glauber dynamics, in order to take into account both the effect of an applied magnetic field and a finite size of the chains. For static fields of moderate intensity and short chain lengths, the approximation of a mono-exponential decay of the magnetization fluctuations is found to be valid at low temperatures; for strong fields and long chains, a multi-exponential decay should rather be assumed. The effect of an oscillating magnetic field, with intensity much smaller than that of the static one, is included in the theory in order to obtain the dynamic susceptibility $\chi(\omega)$. We find that, for an open chain with $N$ spins, $\chi(\omega)$ can be written as a weighted sum of $N$ frequency contributions, with a sum rule relating the frequency weights to the static susceptibility of the chain. Very good agreement is found between the theoretical dynamic susceptibility and the ac susceptibility measured in moderate static fields ($H_{\rm dc}\le 2$ kOe), where the approximation of a single dominating frequency turns out to be valid. For static fields in this range, new data for the relaxation time, $\tau$ versus $H_{\rm dc}$, of the magnetization of CoPhOMe at low temperature are also well reproduced by theory, provided that finite-size effects are included., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The stable marriage (SM) problem has a wide variety of practical applications, ranging from matching resident doctors to hospitals, to matching students to schools, or more generally to any two-sided market. In the classical formulation, n men and n women express their preferences (via a strict total order) over the members of the other sex. Solving a SM problem means finding a stable marriage where stability is an envy-free notion: no man and woman who are not married to each other would both prefer each other to their partners or to being single. We consider both the classical stable marriage problem and one of its useful variations (denoted SMTI) where the men and women express their preferences in the form of an incomplete preference list with ties over a subset of the members of the other sex. Matchings are permitted only with people who appear in these lists, an we try to find a stable matching that marries as many people as possible. Whilst the SM problem is polynomial to solve, the SMTI problem is NP-hard. We propose to tackle both problems via a local search approach, which exploits properties of the problems to reduce the size of the neighborhood and to make local moves efficiently. We evaluate empirically our algorithm for SM problems by measuring its runtime behaviour and its ability to sample the lattice of all possible stable marriages. We evaluate our algorithm for SMTI problems in terms of both its runtime behaviour and its ability to find a maximum cardinality stable marriage.For SM problems, the number of steps of our algorithm grows only as O(nlog(n)), and that it samples very well the set of all stable marriages. It is thus a fair and efficient approach to generate stable marriages.Furthermore, our approach for SMTI problems is able to solve large problems, quickly returning stable matchings of large and often optimal size despite the NP-hardness of this problem., Comment: 12 pages, Proc. We investigate theoretically and experimentally the static magnetic properties of single crystals of the molecular-based Single-Chain Magnet (SCM) of formula [Dy(hfac)$_{3}$NIT(C$_{6}$H$_{4}$OPh)]$_{\infty}$ comprising alternating Dy$^{3+}$ and organic radicals. A peculiar inversion between maxima and minima in the angular dependence of the magnetic molar susceptibility $\chi_{M}$ occurs on increasing temperature. Using information regarding the monomeric building block as well as an {\it ab initio} estimation of the magnetic anisotropy of the Dy$^{3+}$ ion, this anisotropy-inversion phenomenon can be assigned to weak one-dimensional ferromagnetism along the chain axis. This indicates that antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions between Dy$^{3+}$ ions dominate, despite the large Dy-Dy separation, over the nearest-neighbor interactions between the radicals and the Dy$^{3+}$ ions. Measurements of the field dependence of the magnetization, both along and perpendicularly to the chain, and of the angular dependence of $\chi_{M}$ in a strong magnetic field confirm such an interpretation. Transfer matrix simulations of the experimental measurements are performed using a classical one-dimensional spin model with antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange interaction and non-collinear uniaxial single-ion anisotropies favoring a canted antiferromagnetic spin arrangement, with a net magnetic moment along the chain axis. The fine agreement obtained with experimental data provides estimates of the Hamiltonian parameters, essential for further study of the dynamics of rare-earths based molecular chains., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We studied the transition between the antiferromagnetic and the surface spin-flop phases of a uniaxial antiferromagnetic [Fe(14 \AA)/Cr(11 \AA]$_{\rm x20}$ superlattice. For external fields applied parallel to the in-plane easy axis, the layer-by-layer configuration, calculated in the framework of a mean-field one-dimensional model, was benchmarked against published polarized neutron reflectivity data. For an in-plane field $H$ applied at an angle $\psi \ne 0$ with the easy axis, magnetometry shows that the magnetization $M$ vanishes at H=0, then increases slowly with increasing $H$. At a critical value of $H$, a finite jump in $M(H)$ is observed for $\psi<5^{\rm o}$, while a smooth increase of $M$ $vs$ $H$ is found for $\psi>5^{\rm o}$. A dramatic increase in the full width at half maximum of the magnetic susceptibility is observed for $\psi \ge 5^{\rm o}$. The phase diagram obtained from micromagnetic calculations displays a first-order transition to a surface spin-flop phase for low $\psi$ values, while the transition becomes continuous for $\psi$ greater than a critical angle, $\psi_{\rm max} \approx 4.75^{\rm o}$. The field-driven reorientation transition of an anisotropic ferromagnetic monolayer is studied within the context of a finite-temperature Green's function theory. The equilibrium state and the field dependence of the magnon energy gap $E_0$ are calculated for static magnetic field $H$ applied in plane along an easy or a hard axis. In the latter case, the in-plane reorientation of the magnetization is shown to be continuous at T=0, in agreement with free spin wave theory, and discontinuous at finite temperature $T>0$, in contrast with the prediction of mean field theory. The discontinuity in the orientation angle creates a jump in the magnon energy gap, and it is the reason why, for $T>0$, the energy does not go to zero at the reorientation field. Above the Curie temperature $T_C$, the magnon energy gap $E_0(H)$ vanishes for H=0 both in the easy and in the hard case. As $H$ is increased, the gap is found to increase almost linearly with $H$, but with different slopes depending on the field orientation. In particular, the slope is smaller when $H$ is along the hard axis. Such a magnetic anisotropy of the spin-wave energies is shown to persist well above $T_C$ ($T \approx 1.2 T_C$)., Comment: Final version accepted for publication in Physical Review B (with three figures)

The problem of finite size effects in s=1/2 Ising systems showing slow dynamics of the magnetization is investigated introducing diamagnetic impurities in a Co$^{2+}$-radical chain. The static magnetic properties have been measured and analyzed considering the peculiarities induced by the ferrimagnetic character of the compound. The dynamic susceptibility shows that an Arrhenius law is observed with the same energy barrier for the pure and the doped compounds while the prefactor decreases, as theoretically predicted. A double-peaked structure was observed in the {\it in-situ} Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) spectra of a 6 \AA$ $ thick epitaxial Fe/GaAs(001) film for values of an external magnetic field $H$, applied along the hard in plane direction, lower than a critical value $H_c\simeq 0.9$ kOe. This experimental finding is theoretically interpreted in terms of a model which assumes a non-homogeneous magnetic ground state characterized by the presence of perperpendicular up/down stripe domains. For such a ground state, two spin-wave modes, namely an acoustic and an optic mode, can exist. Upon increasing the field the magnetization tilts in the film plane, and for $H \ge H_{c}$ the ground state is homogeneous, thus allowing the existence of just a single spin-wave mode. The frequencies of the two spin-wave modes were calculated and successfully compared with the experimental data. The field dependence of the intensities of the corresponding two peaks that are present in the BLS spectra was also estimated, providing further support to the above-mentioned interpretation., Comment: Shortened version (7 pages). Low temperature specific heat $C(T)$ and zero-field muon spin resonance ($\mu^+$SR) measurements were performed in Gd(hfac)$_3$NITiPr, a quasi one-dimensional molecular magnet with competing nearest neighbor and next-nearest neighbor intrachain exchange interactions. The specific heat data exhibit a $\lambda$-peak at $T_0$=2.08$\pm$0.01K that disappears upon the application of a 5 Tesla magnetic field. Conversely, the $\mu^+$SR data do not present any anomaly at $T\approx 2$ K, proving the lack of divergence of the two-spin correlation function as required for usual three-dimensional (3D) long range helical order. Moreover, no muon spin precession can be evinced from the $\mu^+$SR asimmetry curves, thus excluding the presence of a long range ordered magnetic lattice. These results provide indications for a low $T$ phase where chiral order is established in absence of long range helical order., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

The surface magnetic canting (SMC) of a semi-infinite film with ferromagnetic exchange interaction and competing bulk and surface anisotropies is investigated via a nonlinear mapping formulation of mean-field theory previously developed by our group [L. Trallori et al., Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 10, 1935-1988 (1996)], and extended to the case where an external magnetic field is applied to the system. When the field H is parallel to the film plane, the condition for SMC is found to be the same as that recently reported by Popov and Pappas [Phys. Rev. B 64, 184401 (2001)]. The case of a field H applied perpendicularly to the film plane is also investigated. Brillouin light scattering (BLS) measurements were performed for (17-120) Angstrom thick Cu/Ni/Cu/Si(001) films. A monotonic dependence of the frequency of the uniform mode on an in-plane magnetic field H was observed both on increasing and on decreasing H in the range (2-14) kOe, suggesting the absence of a metastable collinear perpendicular ground state. Further investigation by magneto-optical vector magnetometry (MOKE-VM) in an unconventional canted-field geometry provided evidence for a domain structure where the magnetization is canted with respect to the perpendicular to the film. The slow dynamics (10^-6 s - 10^4 s) of the magnetization in the paramagnetic phase, predicted by Glauber for 1d Ising ferromagnets, has been observed with ac susceptibility and SQUID magnetometry measurements in a molecular chain comprising alternating Co{2+} spins and organic radical spins strongly antiferromagnetically coupled. An Arrhenius behavior with activation energy Delta=152 K has been observed for ten decades of relaxation time and found to be consistent with the Glauber model.
