2. Dissipative Optomechanics in High-Frequency Nanomechanical Resonators

Abstract

The coherent transduction of information between microwave and optical domains is a fundamental building block for future quantum networks. A promising way to bridge these widely different frequencies is using high-frequency nanomechanical resonators interacting with low-loss optical modes. State-of-the-art optomechanical devices rely on purely dispersive interactions that are enhanced by a large photon population in the cavity. Additionally, one could use dissipative optomechanics, where photons can be scattered directly from a waveguide into a resonator hence increasing the degree of control of the acousto-optic interplay. Hitherto, such dissipative optomechanical interaction was only demonstrated at low mechanical frequencies, precluding prominent applications such as the quantum state transfer between photonic and phononic domains. Here, we show the first dissipative optomechanical system operating in the sideband-resolved regime, where the mechanical frequency is larger than the optical linewidth. Exploring this unprecedented regime, we demonstrate the impact of dissipative optomechanical coupling in reshaping both mechanical and optical spectra. Our figures represent a two-order-of-magnitude leap in the mechanical frequency and a tenfold increase in the dissipative optomechanical coupling rate compared to previous works. Abstract

Urban biodiversity and ecosystem services depend on the quality, quantity, and connectivity of urban green areas (UGAs), which are crucial for enhancing urban livability and resilience. However, assessing these connectivity metrics in urban landscapes often suffers from outdated land cover classifications and insufficient spatial resolution. Spectral data from Earth Observation, though promising, remains underutilized in analyzing UGAs' connectivity. This study tests the impact of dataset choices on UGAs' connectivity assessment, comparing land cover classification (Urban Atlas) and spectral data (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, NDVI). Conducted in seven European cities, the analysis included 219 UGAs of varying sizes and connectivity levels, using three connectivity metrics (size, proximity index, and surrounding green area) at different spatial scales. The results showed substantial disparities in connectivity metrics, especially at finer scales and shorter distances. These differences are more pronounced in cities with contiguous UGAs, where Urban Atlas faces challenges related to typology issues and minimum mapping units. Overall, spectral data provides a more comprehensive and standardized evaluation of UGAs' connectivity, reducing reliance on local typology classifications. Consequently, we advocate for integrating spectral data into UGAs' connectivity analysis to advance urban biodiversity and ecosystem services research. Abstract

Summary: Multimorbidity—the coexistence of at least two chronic health conditions within the same individual—is an important global health challenge. In high‐income countries (HICs), multimorbidity is dominated by non‐communicable diseases (NCDs); whereas, the situation may be different in low‐ and middle‐income countries (LMICs), where chronic communicable diseases remain prominent. The aim of this systematic review was to identify determinants (including risk and protective factors) and potential mechanisms underlying multimorbidity from published longitudinal studies across diverse population‐based or community‐dwelling populations in LMICs. We systematically searched three electronic databases (Medline, Embase, and Global Health) using pre‐defined search terms and selection criteria, complemented by hand‐searching. All titles, abstracts, and full texts were independently screened by two reviewers from a pool of four researchers. Data extraction and reporting were according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Methodological quality and risk of bias assessment was performed using the Newcastle‐Ottawa Scale for cohort studies. Data were summarized using narrative synthesis. The search yielded 1782 records. Of the 52 full‐text articles included for review, 8 longitudinal population‐based studies were included for final data synthesis. Almost all studies were conducted in Asia, with only one from South America and none from Africa. All studies were published in the last decade, with half published in the year 2021. The definitions used for multimorbidity were heterogeneous, including 3–16 chronic conditions per study. The leading chronic conditions were heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, and there was a lack of consideration of mental health conditions (MHCs), infectious diseases, and undernutrition. Prospectively evaluated determinants included socio‐economic status, markers of social inequities, childhood adversity, lifestyle behaviors, obesity, dyslipidemia, and disability. This review revealed a paucity of evidence from LMICs and a geographical bias in the distribution of multimorbidity research. Longitudinal research into epidemiological aspects of multimorbidity is warranted to build up scientific evidence in regions beyond Asia. Such evidence can provide a detailed picture of disease development, with important implications for community, clinical, and interventions in LMICs. The heterogeneity in study designs, exposures, outcomes, and statistical methods observed in the present review calls for greater methodological standardisation while conducting epidemiological studies on multimorbidity. The limited evidence for MHCs, infectious diseases, and undernutrition as components of multimorbidity calls for a more comprehensive definition of multimorbidity globally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

O câncer de pênis é uma patologia que, apesar de rara, resulta em profundos impactos emocionais e físicos no paciente. Ademais, a incidência na região Nordeste do Brasil é elevada, especialmente no estado do Maranhão, cuja incidência é a mais alta no contexto global. Nesse sentido, considerando o exposto, esse trabalho objetiva a revisão integrativa dos fatores de risco e da etiologia do câncer de pênis e destaca as particularidades de estados da região brasileira nordestina. Para tal, foi realizada uma pesquisa bibliográfica nas bases de dados PubMed e BVS no intervalo temporal de 2000 a 2020, usando os seguintes descritores na língua inglesa: “etiology”, “risk factors”, “penis”, “cancer”, “Brazil” e “Maranhao”. Como resultados, foram selecionados 20 artigos para compor a discussão do tema e fatores de risco do câncer de pênis foram identificados como os mais proeminentes e destacados nos estudos. Como exemplo, pode-se citar a ausência de circuncisão, hábitos inadequados de higiene, fatores socioeconômicos, fimose, condições inflamatórias (líquen escleroso e atrófico e balanite), infecção por papilomavírus humano e hábito de fumar. Dessa forma, foram detalhados cada um desses tópicos visando o futuro delineamento de políticas públicas pelos governantes brasileiros no enfrentamento do câncer de pênis no Brasil, em especial, na região Nordeste brasileira. Assim, espera-se que futuramente hajam menos casos dessa enfermidade no país e melhoria da perspectiva de saúde dos brasileiros.

43. Low-Profile Textile Antenna for Bioradar Integration Into Car Seat Upholstery: Wireless acquisition of vital signs while on the road

Abstract

Recently, radar systems have been widely explored as a remote way to monitor vital signs. The potential of such technology may increase with the ability to be fully embedded in customized applications, providing a low-profile appearance. Thus, it is possible to streamline the industrialization process and simultaneously guarantee the comfort of the subject being monitored. In this work, the ability to fully integrate a bioradar system in a car seat, aiming to monitor the respiratory signal of the driver, is studied. For this purpose, textile antennas were developed to be embedded into the upholstery, using a new approach to wirelessly acquire vital signs by positioning the antennas in the side lumbar support of the car seat. Considering the final aspect of the prototype and its performance, alternative options for the antenna feeding were explored, and an electromagnetic insulation solution was implemented. Finally, the vital signs of six subjects were acquired with the final prototype. The obtained results were compared with certified measuring equipment, demonstrating the prototype effectiveness.

Previous studies have evaluated how changes in atmospheric nitrogen (N) inputs and climate affect stream N concentrations and fluxes, but none have synthesized data from sites around the globe. We identified variables controlling stream inorganic N concentrations and fluxes, and how they have changed, by synthesizing 20 time series ranging from 5 to 51 years of data collected from forest and grassland dominated watersheds across Europe, North America, and East Asia and across four climate types (tropical, temperate, Mediterranean, and boreal) using the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network. We hypothesized that sites with greater atmospheric N deposition have greater stream N export rates, but that climate has taken a stronger role as atmospheric deposition declines in many regions of the globe. We found declining trends in bulk ammonium and nitrate deposition, especially in the longest time-series, with ammonium contributing relatively more to atmospheric N deposition over time. Among sites, there were statistically significant positive relationships between (1) annual rates of precipitation and stream ammonium and nitrate fluxes and (2) annual rates of atmospheric N inputs and stream nitrate concentrations and fluxes. There were no significant relationships between air temperature and stream N export. Our long-term data shows that although N deposition is declining over time, atmospheric N inputs and precipitation remain important predictors for inorganic N exported from forested and grassland watersheds. Overall, we also demonstrate that long-term monitoring provides understanding of ecosystems and biogeochemical cycling that would not be possible with short-term studies alone.
