O objetivo foi avaliar o desempenho, peso relativo de órgãos, morfometria, comprimento intestinal e atividade de enzimas pancreáticas de frangos de corte recebendo suplemento neonatal. Foram utilizados 900 pintos de corte da linhagem Cobb 500, alojados em 30 boxes de 2,5 m². Os tratamentos foram divididos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições, e consistiram em cinco níveis de inclusão (0,0; 2,5; 5,0; 7,5 e 10 gramas por ave). O suplemento utilizado foi à base de aminoácidos, vitaminas e minerais, o qual foi fornecido no primeiro dia de alojamento sobre a ração. A análise estatística foi realizada utilizando o SAS (2008) e quando significativos desdobrados em regressão polinomial. Em função da inclusão do suplemento neonatal no período de um a sete e de um a 21 dias de idade o consumo de ração apresentou efeito linear e o ganho de peso efeito quadrático. Os pesos relativos da moela e do fígado apresentaram efeito quadrático, e as inclusões de 4,18 e 3,41 gramas/ave proporcionaram os menores pesos respectivamente. A altura das vilosidades do jejuno diminuiu com a suplementação assim como a atividade da lipase pancreática. Conclui-se que a suplementação neonatal beneficiou o desempenho das aves até os 21 dias de idade. ABSTRACT. The objective was to evaluate the performance, relative organ weight, morphometry, intestinal length and pancreatic enzyme activity of broilers receiving neonatal supplementation. A total of 900 Cobb 500 broiler chicks was housed in 30 boxes of 2.5 m². The treatments were divided in a completely randomized design with six replications, and consisted of five inclusion levels (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10 grams per bird). The supplement used was based of amino acids, vitamins and minerals, which was provided on the ration on the first day in the housing. Statistical analysis was performed using SAS (2008) and when significant broken down using a polynomial regression. Due to the inclusion of the neonatal supplement in the period from one to seven and one to 21 days of age, the feed intake presented a linear effect and the weight gain, a quadratic effect. The relative weights of the gizzard and liver showed a quadratic effect, and the inclusions of 4.18 and 3.41 grams/bird provided the lowest weights, respectively. The jejunum villi height decreased with supplementation as well as the activity of pancreatic lipase. It can be concluded that neonatal supplementation benefited the performance of birds up to 21 days of age. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of replacing lactose with maltodextrin and adding fructooligosaccharides (FOSs) to the feed of weaned piglets. The first experiment was conducted using a randomized block design with a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (2 sources of carbohydrates: maltodextrin and lactose in the pre-starter feed and with or without the use of 0.3% FOS in the pre-starter and starter feeds) with 7 repetitions in 3 animals. Performance and hematological parameters were evaluated. The second experiment was conducted using a randomized block design with a 2 × 2 × 2 + 1 factorial arrangement (2 sources of carbohydrates: maltodextrin and lactose and with or without the use of 0.3% FOS; 2 slaughter dates: 7 and 14 d post-weaning; and slaughter on the day of weaning) with 8 repetitions in 1 animal. The following parameters were evaluated: pH and relative weight of digestive organs, enzyme activity, and microbial population. In the initial phase, maltodextrin did not compromise performance and could replace lactose with economic benefits; however, it does reduce intake of the pre-starter I feed. Maltodextrin has a prebiotic effect because it reduces the total coliform and E. coli populations in the cecum and reduces the pH of the rectal contents. The use of FOSs is not justified, regardless of whether lactose or maltodextrin is added to the feed.

Wistar rat dams were fed isocaloric diets containing 6% protein (restricted, n = 8) or 17% protein (control, n = 8) throughout gestation. Male offspring (n = 5-8 in each group) were evaluated at 3 or 16 weeks of age. Maternal protein restriction during pregnancy produced offspring with growth restriction from birth (5.7 ± 0.1 vs 6.3 ± 0.1 g; mean ± SE) to weaning (42.4 ± 1.3 vs 49.1 ± 1.6 g), although at 16 weeks of age their body weight was similar to control (421.7 ± 8.9 and 428.5 ± 8.5 g). Maternal protein restriction also increased lactase activity in the proximal (0.23 ± 0.02 vs 0.15 ± 0.02), medial (0.30 ± 0.06 vs 0.14 ± 0.01) and distal (0.43 ± 0.07 vs 0.07 ± 0.02 U·g-1·min-1) small intestine, and mRNA lactase abundance in the proximal intestine (7.96 ± 1.11 vs 2.38 ± 0.47 relative units) of 3-week-old offspring rats. In addition, maternal protein restriction increased sucrase activity (1.20 ± 0.02 vs 0.91 ± 0.02 U·g-1·min-1) and sucrase mRNA abundance (4.48 ± 0.51 vs 1.95 ± 0.17 relative units) in the duodenum of 16-week-old rats. In conclusion, the present study shows for the first time that intrauterine protein restriction affects gene expression of intestinal enzymes in offspring. The effects of feed restriction and subsequent refeeding on the gene expression of intestinal enzymes and nutrient transporters at 2 ages, 7 and 35 d, were examined in different groups of broiler chickens. At each age, birds were feed restricted for 7 d (30% of ad libitum intake) followed by 3 d of refeeding ad libitum. Control groups were fed ad libitum. Total RNA of jejunal mucosa was extracted according to the Trizol protocol, and mRNA expression of sodium glucose transporter 1, glucose transporter 2, peptide transporter 1, aminopeptidase, maltase, and sucrase-isomaltase complex was obtained by reverse-transcription PCR. The expression of aminopeptidase, sodium glucose transporter 1, and peptide transporter 1 was higher in feed-restricted groups than in control groups at d 14 (181.4, 116.7, and 80.4%, respectively) and d 42 (143.5, 84.2, and 195.9%, respectively). The mRNA abundance of sucrase-isomaltase complex was higher (159.1%) only in chickens that were feed restricted from d 35 to 42. No statistically significant effect of feed restriction was observed for mRNA abundance of maltase and glucose transporter 2 at either age. After refeeding (d 17 and 45), the RNA abundance of enzymes and nutrient transporters was similar to that in the control group. Thus, this study suggests that an effect of upregulation in gene expression exists during feed restriction that disappears when feed is supplied ad libitum.

OBJETIVO: Desenvolver uma dieta hiperlipídica de baixo custo, tendo farinha de soja como fonte proteica, que seja eficiente na seleção de ratos propensos e resistentes à obesidade e que permita alcançar fenótipo obeso nos animais propensos. Além desses requisitos, a dieta deve ser palatável e não rejeitada a curto prazo pelo animal. MÉTODOS: A dieta proposta foi obtida misturando-se leite condensado (15,5%), amendoim (18,5%), farinha de soja (20,0%), óleo de milho (6,0%), ração Bio Tec (30,0%) e bolacha wafer de chocolate (10,0%). A mistura foi peletizada e submetida à análise bromatológica. A dieta foi ofertada a ratos Wistar durante uma semana; posteriormente, os animais foram divididos em três grupos, de acordo com o ganho de peso. O terço superior foi considerado propenso à obesidade e o terço inferior, resistente à obesidade. Após 80 dias de oferta da dieta, os animais foram sacrificados e foram quantificados o peso corpóreo, consumo alimentar, gorduras retroperitoneal, periepididimal, de carcaça e gorduras totais. RESULTADOS: Verificou-se que a dieta apresentava 5,31kcal/g, com a seguinte composição: 22,3% de gordura, 22,2% de proteína, 15,9% de fibra, estimando-se 35,7% de carboidrato. Ratos propensos à obesidade, alimentados por 87 dias com a dieta hipercalórica, apresentaram peso corpóreo, gorduras retroperitoneal, periepididimal e totais significativamente maiores do que animais resistentes à obesidade (pOBJECTIVE: The objective was to develop a high-fat, low cost diet, using soybean meal as protein source. This diet should effectively discriminate between rats prone and resistant to obesity and allow the obese phenotype to be achieved in the animals that are prone to obesity. Furthermore, the diet must be palatable and not be rejected by the animal in the short run. METHODS: The chow was obtained by mixing the following ingredients: condensed milk (15.5%), peanuts (18.5%), soybean meal (20.0%), corn oil (6.0%), Bio Tec chow (30.0%) and chocolate wafer cookies (10.0%). In order to make it appropriate for rats, the mixture was pelleted and subjected to food analysis. The chow was offered to Wistar rats for a week. The animals were subsequently separated according to weight gained. The upper third group was considered prone to obesity and the lower third group was considered resistant to obesity. The animals were sacrificed 80 days later to determine body weight, food intake, retroperitoneal, periepididymal and carcass fats and total fats. RESULTS: Food analysis found that the chow had an energy density of 5.31 Kcal/g, 22.3% fat, 22.2% protein, 15.9% fiber and 35.7% carbohydrates. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os níveis de inclusão de silagem de grãos úmidos de sorgo (SGUS), em substituição ao milho seco da ração sobre desempenho, rendimento de carcaça, cortes e gordura abdominal, além de avaliação econômica da criação alternativa, no período de 1 a 49 dias de idade. Também foi avaliada a digestibilidade das rações aos 21 dias de idade. Para as análises de desempenho e rendimento de carcaça, foram distribuídos, em galpão, 600 pintos machos (Cobb), um dia de idade, em delineamento em blocos casualizados, com seis tratamentos (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50% de inclusão SGUS, em substituição ao milho seco da ração), e quatro repetições de 25 aves cada. Para digestibilidade, foram alojados em câmara termoneutra, 72 pintos (Cobb), em 24 gaiolas, sendo três aves/gaiola, 12 aves/tratamento. Os tratamentos experimentais foram os mesmos adotados para o galpão. A SGUS pode substituir em até 50% o milho seco das rações de frangos alternativos, criados até 49 dias de idade, sem alterar desempenho, rendimento de carcaça, cortes e gordura abdominal, bem como a digestibilidade de nutrientes aos 21 dias de idade. Entretanto, o maior retorno econômico e melhor fator de produção foram obtidos com 10% de substituição.The objective of this study was to evaluate levels of inclusion of high-moisture sorghum grains silage (HMSS) in replacement of dry corn in diet on performance, carcass yield, cuts and abdominal fat, and also economic analysis of alternative system at 1 to 49 d of age. The digestibility of the diets was determined at 21 d of age. For performance and carcass yield analysis, 600 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Cobb) were used, installed in a broiler house, in a randomized blocks, with six treatments based on the inclusion of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of HMSS in replacement of dry corn, and four replicates/treatment with 25 chicks each. For digestibility, 72 one-dayold male chicks (Cobb) were housed in a thermoneutral chamber, in 24 cages, with 3 chicks/cage and 12 chicks/treatment. The experimental treatments were the same adopted for the broiler house. HMSS can replace up to 50% of dry corn in the diet of alternative broiler chickens up to 49 d of age, without altering performance, carcass yield, cuts or abdominal fat, as well as digestibility at 21 d of age. However, the best economic return and production factor was obtained with 10% substitution.

The treatments consisted of six diets: R+S: free-choice feeding with rice bran (energy) and soybean meal (protein); C+G: free-choice feeding with corn (energy) and corn gluten meal (protein); R+G: free-choice feeding with rice bran (energy) and corn gluten meal (protein); C+S: free-choice feeding with corn (energy) and soybean meal (protein); R+C+G+S: free-choice feeding with rice bran and corn (energy) and corn gluten meal and soybean meal (protein); and BD: basal diet represented by a complete diet composed of 63% corn and 33% soybean meal. The results indicated that the adjustment to nutritional requirements does not depend only on the ability of birds to select feed. It might also depend on intake and ingredient quality, since some ingredients did not provide a balanced amount of nutrients. The birds were able to fulfill their requirements for maintenance, that is, they consumed the minimum amount of amino acids (g per day) for maximum growth. The free-choice group with corn gluten meal as the protein source had the worst performance, which indicated that this feed is not recommended as a primary source of amino acids for broilers. The C+G diet presented the highest digestibility coefficient of dry matter and crude protein, whereas the C+S diet resulted in the highest digestibility coefficient of ether extract and nitrogen-free extract, indicating that diet digestibility was affected by the type of feed used as energy and protein sources. In general, the high digestibility values indicate that broilers are able to efficiently digest and absorb the supplied feed. 1. The 13C turnover rates of the liver and thoracic pectoral muscle of growing broilers were determined by feeding diets with varying 13C content. 2. Male chicks (1-d-old) were subjected to treatments based on free choice of 5 different mixes of energy and protein sources from plants with C3 and C4 photosynthetic pathways that had differing 13C content. Rice bran (R) and soybean meal (S) were the C3 sources, while maize (C) and maize gluten meal (G) were the C4 sources. Choices were R + S, C + G, R + G, C + S or R + C + G + S. The 6th treatment was a complete feed (CF) that was similar to a commercial broiler feed. 3. The isotopic composition of the birds’ tissues was representative of the isotopic composition of the diets. The assimilation was faster for C3, in both liver and muscle, than for C4 diets, and give the delta per mil difference between the diet and tissues. 4. The liver is the most active metabolic tissue and gave more rapid isotope turnover than in muscle.

The effect of feed restriction and enzymatic supplementation on intestinal and pancreatic enzyme activities and weight gain was studied in broiler chickens. Quantitative feed restriction was applied to chickens from 7 to 14 d of age. An enzyme complex mainly consisting of protease and amylase was added to the chicken ration from hatching to the end of the experiment. Birds subjected to feed restriction whose diet was not supplemented showed an increase in sucrase, amylase, and lipase activities immediately after the restriction period. Amylase, lipase, and chymotrypsin activities were higher in chickens subjected to feed restriction and fed a supplemented diet than in those only subjected to feed restriction. Trypsin activity increased after feed restriction and after supplementation, but there was no interaction between these effects. Early feed restriction had no effect on enzyme activity in 42-d-old chickens. Chickens subjected to early restriction and fed the supplemented diet presented higher sucrase, maltase, and lipase activities than nonsupplemented ones (P < 0.05). There was no effect of early feed restriction or diet supplementation on weight gain to 42 d. Percentage weight gain from 14 to 42 d of age was equivalent in feed-restricted and ad libitum fed birds. Feed-restricted broilers fed a supplemented diet showed a higher percentage weight gain than nonsupplemented birds. We conclude that enzymatic supplementation potentiates the effect of feed restriction on digestive enzyme activity and on weight gain.

The present study aimed to quantify the proportion of 13 C from energy and protein feed ingredients that follow the metabolic routing of the liver and muscle in broiler chickens. A stable isotope of carbon technique was used that is based on the isotopic discrimination that occurs in the plants during the photosynthesis process. One-day-old male chicks were subjected to treatments based on free choice of energy and protein sources. Rice bran (R) and soybean meal (S), C3 plants, have higher isotopic ratios than corn (C), a C4 plant, and corn gluten meal (G). Choices were R+S, C+G, R+G, C+S, or R+C+G+S. A complete feed (CF) was a sixth treatment. Feed intake and BW were measured at 30 d of age, when liver and breast muscle were collected for isotopic analysis. Treatments affected the amount of feed intake and the choices of energy or protein sources. Complete feed had the largest intake, differing from the other treatments that had free-choice feeding. Final BW was a direct reflection of consumption by these birds in all treatments. The isotopic results indicated that the 13 C/12 C ratio was generally higher in breast muscle than in liver, probably because of higher protein content. Moreover, in the liver, the proportion of 13 C retained from the energy ingredient was greater than the proportion from the protein ingredient. That is in contrast to muscle, where the proportion of 13 C retained from the protein ingredient was greater than from the energy ingredient that was self-selected.

A total of 288 one-day-old male Cobb chicks were distributed according to a randomized block design in a 3x4 factorial arrangement: three environmental temperatures (hot, thermoneutral or cold) and four levels of HMCGS in substitution of dry corn (0%, 20%, 40% or 60%). The acid analysis showed that the evaluated HMCGS contained average percentage values of ethanol, lactic acid, and acetic acid (expressed in 100% of dry matter) of 0.7690, 2.7320 and 0.0249%, respectively. Propionic and butyric acids were not detected. Dry corn and HMCGS presented pH values of 5.8 and 3.3, respectively. The inclusion of HMCGS reduced dietary pH, as shown by the values of 5.7, 5.4, 5.1 and 4.8 recorded for the diets containing 0%, 20%, 40% and 60% of HMCGS, respectively. There was no significant interaction between diets and environmental temperature. HMCGS may replace up to 40% dry corn in broiler diets when performance, triglyceride levels, and HDL-cholesterol ratio is considered, and up to 60% when nutrient digestibility is evaluated. High environmental temperature impairs broiler performance, nutrient digestibility, and serum biochemistry, demonstrating the influence of environmental temperature on broiler metabolism and performance. As doses hormonais para a indução da ovulação e espermiação seguiram as propostas de FALCON e CULLEY (1995) e ALONSO (1997); entretanto, a técnica de fertilização artificial foi adaptada da metodologia para reprodução artificial de peixes com ovos não-aderentes (WOYNAROVICH e HORVÁTH, 1983). A técnica proposta apresenta as seguintes etapas: I) sincronização da ovulação e da espermiação, por meio de hormônio liberador de gonadotropina ((Des-Gli10, D-His(Bzl)6, Pro-NHEt9)-LHRH)); II) extração dos óvulos de cada fêmea (1 a 2 minutos); III) fertilização dos óvulos (2 minutos) com líquido espermático diluído em 100 mL de água; IV) hidratação dos ovos em 10 a 20 litros de água; e V) incubação dos ovos em quadros de tela de 1x 0,70 m, com malha de 1 mm. As taxas de fertilização obtidas com as modificações propostas foram superiores a 60%. Ressalta-se ainda que a técnica propiciou a obtenção, a partir de um mesmo animal, de várias desovas, sendo que cada fêmea pode ovular em intervalos de, aproximadamente, 45 dias. The objective of this study was to improve the artificial fertilization techniques for bullfrog, to increase the fertilization rate and become their use accessible for frog producers. Hormone dosages for inducing ovulation and spermiation followed those proposed by FALCON and CULLEY (1995) and ALONSO (1997); however, the artificial fertilization technique was adapted from the available methodology for artificial reproduction of fish with non-adhering eggs (WOYNAROVICH e HORVÁTH, 1983). The proposed technique consists of the following steps: I) synchronization of ovulation and spermiation through gonadotropin releasing hormone ((Des-Gli10, D-His(Bzl)6, Pro-NHEt9)-LHRH)); II) complete ovule extrusion in every female (1 to 2 minutes); III) ovule fertilization (2 minutes) with sperm diluted in 100 mL water; IV) ova hydration in 10 - 20 L water; V) ova incubation in screen frames, measuring 1,0 x 0,7 m, with 1 mm screen size. Fertilization rate obtained with the proposed modifications stayed above 60 %. It should also be emphasized that the proposed techniques allowed to obtain several spawns from the same frog, and each female was able to ovulate, approximately, every 45 days. A randomized block design was applied using a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement, with three fat sources (soybean oil, poultry fat, and a blend of 50% soybean oil and 50% poultry fat) and the addition or not of an emulsifier. In experiment I, broiler performance, carcass traits, serum cholesterol, HDL, and triglyceride levels, and pancreatic lipase activity in 42-day-old broilers were evaluated. In experiment II, dry matter (DM), ether extract (EE), crude protein (CP) and crude fiber (CF) coefficients of digestibility were analyzed. Broilers fed the diet containing soybean oil and emulsifier presented higher body weight, weight gain and better feed conversion ratio. When birds were fed poultry fat and the fat blend (soybean oil and poultry fat) and the emulsifier was added to the diets, pancreatic lipase concentration increased. It was concluded that the use of soybean oil, poultry fat and their blend does no in the diet does not influence the performance, carcass traits, or serum cholesterol, HDL and triglyceride levels of 42-day-old broilers. The addition of emulsifiers to diets containing poultry fat improves ether extract digestibility and increases the production and secretion of pancreatic lipase. Além desses requisitos, a dieta deve ser palatável e não rejeitada a curto prazo pelo animal. MÉTODOS: A dieta proposta foi obtida misturando-se leite condensado (15,5%), amendoim (18,5%), farinha de soja (20,0%), óleo de milho (6,0%), ração Bio Tec (30,0%) e bolacha wafer de chocolate (10,0%). A mistura foi peletizada e submetida à análise bromatológica. A dieta foi ofertada a ratos Wistar durante uma semana; posteriormente, os animais foram divididos em três grupos, de acordo com o ganho de peso. O terço superior foi considerado propenso à obesidade e o terço inferior, resistente à obesidade. Após 80 dias de oferta da dieta, os animais foram sacrificados e foram quantificados o peso corpóreo, consumo alimentar, gorduras retroperitoneal, periepididimal, de carcaça e gorduras totais. RESULTADOS: Verificou-se que a dieta apresentava 5,31kcal/g, com a seguinte composição: 22,3% de gordura, 22,2% de proteína, 15,9% de fibra, estimando-se 35,7% de carboidrato. The objective of this study was to evaluate levels of inclusion of high-moisture sorghum grains silage (HMSS) in replacement of dry corn in diet on performance, carcass yield, cuts and abdominal fat, and also economic analysis of alternative system at 1 to 49 d of age. The digestibility of the diets was determined at 21 d of age. For performance and carcass yield analysis, 600 one-day-old male broiler chicks (Cobb) were used, installed in a broiler house, in a randomized blocks, with six treatments based on the inclusion of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50% of HMSS in replacement of dry corn, and four replicates/treatment with 25 chicks each. For digestibility, 72 one-dayold male chicks (Cobb) were housed in a thermoneutral chamber, in 24 cages, with 3 chicks/cage and 12 chicks/treatment. The experimental treatments were the same adopted for the broiler house. HMSS can replace up to 50% of dry corn in the diet of alternative broiler chickens up to 49 d of age, without altering performance, carcass yield, cuts or abdominal fat, as well as digestibility at 21 d of age. However, the best economic return and production factor was obtained with 10% substitution. O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os níveis de inclusão de silagem de grãos úmidos de sorgo (SGUS), em substituição ao milho seco da ração sobre desempenho, rendimento de carcaça, cortes e gordura abdominal, além de avaliação econômica da criação alternativa, no período de 1 a 49 dias de idade. Também foi avaliada a digestibilidade das rações aos 21 dias de idade. Para as análises de desempenho e rendimento de carcaça, foram distribuídos, em galpão, 600 pintos machos (Cobb), um dia de idade, em delineamento em blocos casualizados, com seis tratamentos (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 e 50% de inclusão SGUS, em substituição ao milho seco da ração), e quatro repetições de 25 aves cada. Para digestibilidade, foram alojados em câmara termoneutra, 72 pintos (Cobb), em 24 gaiolas, sendo três aves/gaiola, 12 aves/tratamento. Os tratamentos experimentais foram os mesmos adotados para o galpão. A SGUS pode substituir em até 50% o milho seco das rações de frangos alternativos, criados até 49 dias de idade, sem alterar desempenho, rendimento de carcaça, cortes e gordura abdominal, bem como a digestibilidade de nutrientes aos 21 dias de idade. Entretanto, o maior retorno econômico e melhor fator de produção foram obtidos com 10% de substituição.

Foram utilizados 180 pintinhos machos, Cobb, de um dia de idade, distribuídos em um delineamento em blocos casualizados e submetidos a 5 tratamentos (T1 = sem aditivo, T2 = antibiótico, T3 = probiótico, T4 = prebiótico e T5 = simbiótico). 3. Os resultados mostraram que a adição de prebiótico na fase inicial (1 a 21 dias de idade) promoveu melhor conversão alimentar e aumento da atividade da enzima maltase (P0,05) na produção de ácidos graxos voláteis entre os tratamentos. A suplementação de prebiótico também aumentou o peso do intestino grosso (P0,05). 5. A suplementação de prebiótico, probiótico e simbiótico não alterou o ganho de peso na fase final de criação. Entretanto, na fase inicial o uso de prebiótico melhorou a conversão alimentar e atividade da maltase. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of the probiotic, prebiotic and symbiotic supplementation on the performance, weight of organs, intestinal microflora, volatile fatty acids and digestive enzyme activities. 2. A total of 180 one-day- old male chicks (Cobb) was distributed in a complete block design, with five treatments (T1 = no additives, T2 = antibiotics, T3 = probiotics, T4 = prebiotics and T5 = symbiotics). 3. The results showed that the addition of prebiotic in the initial period (1 to 21 days) promoted better feed conversion and increase maltase activities (P0.05) among the treatment groups. The prebiotic supplementation also increased weight of the large intestine (P0.05). 5. The prebiotic, probiotic and symbiotic supplementation did not change the gain weight in the last period. However, in the initial period the use of prebiotic improves feed conversion and maltase activities.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o efeito da inclusão de alho em pó (Allium sativum) em rações para frangos, sobre desempenho, rendimento de carcaça e partes, peso de órgãos, níveis de colesterol e triacilgliceróis sangüíneos, e morfometria intestinal. Foram utilizados 720 pintainhos machos Cobb, com um dia de idade, distribuídos em blocos casualizados com seis tratamentos: ração sem promotor de crescimento (PC), sem anticoccidiano (AC) e com 0,00, 0,25, 0,50, 0,75 e 1,00% de alho; e ração com PC+AC, com quatro repetições de 30 aves cada. Peso, ganho de peso, consumo de ração, conversão alimentar e mortalidade foram obtidos aos 21 e 42 dias de idade. Aos 42 dias de idade foram abatidas 20 aves por tratamento para determinação do rendimento de carcaça e 4 aves para avaliação do peso de órgãos e morfometria intestinal. Sangue de 8 aves por tratamento foi colhido para determinação de colesterol e triacilgliceróis. Em aves alimentadas até 42 dias de idade com ração sem promotor de crescimento e anticoccidiano, a inclusão de até 1,00% de alho em pó beneficiou a conversão alimentar e não alterou o rendimento de carcaça e partes, peso relativo dos órgãos, mucosa intestinal, nem os níveis séricos de colesterol e triacilgliceróis. O alho não substitui com eficiência o antibiótico usado como promotor de crescimento em rações de frangos. The objective of this work was to evaluate the inclusion of powered garlic (Allium Sativum) in diets of broiler chickens and the effect of this inclusion on the performance, carcass yield and parts, organ weights, serum cholesterol and triacilglycerols levels, as well as intestinal morphometry. Seven hundred and twenty male Cobb chicks one-day-old were distributed in randomized blocks with six treatments: diet without growth promoter and without anticoccidial (GP+AC) and with 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00% of powered garlic, and diet with GP+AC, with four replications of 30 chickens each. Chickens were reared up to 42 days old. Weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and mortality were obtained at 21 and 42 days. At the 42nd, 20 chickens per treatment were slaughtered in order to determine carcass yield and other 4 chickens per treatment were used to estimate organ weights and intestinal morphology. Blood of 8 chickens per treatment was collected to determine cholesterol and triacilglycerols. For the birds feeding on the diet without growth promoter and without anticoccidial, the inclusion up to 1.00% of powered garlic in the diet improved feed conversion and did not alter carcass yield and parts, organ weights, intestinal mucous or influenced the serum levels of cholesterol and triacilglycerols. The garlic did not replace efficiently the antibiotic.

No segundo experimento, foram utilizados 24 pintainhos machos Ross, distribuídos ao acaso, em dois tratamentos (com e sem SGUM) e 12 repetições cada. A SGUM até 21 dias de idade não interferiu no desempenho das aves e no rendimento de carcaça aos 42 dias de idade. Frangos alimentados com SGUM apresentaram maior peso relativo do fígado, menor largura das vilosidades do duodeno e íleo, maior altura de vilosidade no jejuno aos 21 dias, e menor profundidade de cripta no duodeno e no íleo aos 42 dias de idade. A SGUM pode ser considerada um ingrediente em dietas de frangos de corte até 21 dias de idade, por não interferir no peso final das aves, no rendimento de carcaça e peso dos órgãos. Broilers fed with HMCS presented higher relative weight of the liver, lower width of duodenum and ileum villus, higher height of the jejunum villus at 21 and lower depth of crypt in the duodenum and ileum at the age of 42 days. The HMCS can be considered an ingredient of broiler chicken diets up to the age of 21 days, for not interfering on the poultry final weight, on carcass yield and organ weights. At each age, the birds were 70% feed-restricted for 7 d (30% of ad libitum intake) followed by ad libitum refeeding for 3 d. The control groups were fed ad libitum during equivalent periods (10 d). Pancreatic activity of chymotrypsin, trypsin, amylase and lipase, and intestinal activity of sucrase and maltase were analyzed, and the weights of the proventriculus, gizzard, pancreas, small and large intestine were obtained. Trypsin and amylase activity were lower in the feed-restricted group than in the control groups at d14, whereas sucrase activity was lower in the feed-restricted group than in the control group at d42, showing that the effect of feed restriction on enzyme activity was age-dependent. Feed restriction decreased the weight of all organs in the starter and finisher periods. Upon refeeding, the organ weight increased and reached that of the control group only in chickens that were feed-restricted from d35 to d42. In the starter period, proventriculus and gizzard were less affected by feed restriction. In the finisher period, the gizzard was also the least affected organ, while the small intestine was the most affected. All effects of feed restriction were reversed after 3 days of ad libitum refeeding, indicating that the alterations were fast and reversible. Ratos machos nascidos de mães alimentadas ad libitum (controle) ou que sofreram restrição calórica de 30% (restrito) durante a gestação e/ou lactação foram distribuídos em seis grupos experimentais: CCC (provenientes de mães alimentadas com dieta C na gestação e lactação, com dieta C pós-desmame); CCH (provenientes de mães alimentadas com dieta C na gestação e lactação, com dieta H pós-desmame,); RCC (provenientes de mães restritas na gestação e controle na lactação, com dieta controle após desmame); RCH (provenientes de mães restritas na gestação e controle na lactação, com dieta H após desmame); RRC (provenientes de mães restritas na gestação e lactação, com dieta controle após desmame); RRH (provenientes de mães restritas na gestação e lactação, com dieta H após desmame). Foram avaliados o desenvolvimento corpóreo, o peso do tecido adiposo, fígado, órgãos do trato gastrointestinal, pâncreas, expressão gênica do GLUT4 e parâmetros do metabolismo de gordura e glicose. A restrição nutricional materna prejudicou o crescimento corpóreo, o desenvolvimento de vários órgãos como fígado e trato gastrointestinal, e provocou alterações no metabolismo lipídico e glicose. A dieta hiperlipídica alterou o metabolismo hepático. A restrição alimentar materna gerou indivíduos adultos com maior propensão ao desenvolvimento de alterações metabólicas, como a resistência à insulina. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of moderate maternal food restriction during pregnancy and/or lactation on digestive enzyme activity in adult male rats fed highfat (H) or standart (C) diet after weaning (3 to 16 weeks of age). Male rats born to dams fed ad libitum (control) or dams undernutrition to 30% of control throughout pregnancy or lactation were assigned to six groups: CCC (rats born to dams fed C diet during pregnancy and lactation, and fed C diet after weaning); CCH (rats born to dams fed C diet during pregnancy and lactation, and fed H diet after weaning); RCC (rats born to dams undernutrition to 30% during pregnancy, C diet during lactation, and fed C diet after weaning); RCH (rats born to dams undernutrition to 30% during pregnancy, C diet during lactation, and fed H diet after weaning); RRC (rats born to dams undernutrition to 30% during pregnancy and lactation, and fed C diet after weaning); RRH (rats born to dams undernutrition to 30% during pregnancy and lactation, and fed H diet after weaning). In animals with three and 16 weeks of age, we evaluated sucrase, lactase, maltase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase, amylase enzymes activities. Three weeks of age, maternal food restriction reduced amylase and lípase activity, no effect on disaccharidases. 16 weeks of age, maternal and post-weaning diet showed interaction for disaccharidases and lipase activity. Maternal nutrition decreased disaccharidases activity and reduced trypsin. High-fat diet increased lipase activity and reduced disaccharidases and trypsin. In conclusion, results show that changes in the activity of digestives enzymes can occur by maternal food restriction on pregnancy and/or lactation and diet post-weaning has an important role in the activity of these enzymes, amplify effects of anterior nutritional situation
