The report briefly describes five years of research. Mapping of the structure of liquid argon was done, with the completion of experiments and data analysis at twelve new thermodynamic states in the dense liquid domain. These additional experiments confirm earlier conclusions regarding systematic failure of several current integral equation theories of the liquid state. A concerted experimental attack was made on thermodynamic singularities in the critical region of argon and krypton. New techniques in inelastic light scattering also have been developed. For study of dynamical processes in liquids in liquids and were used for an extensive experimental study of dynamical correlations near the consolute point of the 2,6-lutidine water system. (Author)

The report describes the progress and reports occurring during a two-year interval for a program of experimental and theoretical study of forces and configurations at the molecular level in simple fluids. The mapping of the structure of liquid argon was extended, with the completion of experiments and data analysis at six new thermodynamic states in the dense liquid domain. A special apparatus has been constructed to permit the experimental study of intermolecular forces. A torsional crystal viscometer designed for studies of viscosity anomalies in the critical region of xenon is now operating. (Author)

The investigation described in this report is an outgrowth of a project started in 1954. The investigation was directed primarily toward gaining some understanding of the geometry, mechanics, and thermodynamics of crevassing in a very small, simple area, and attempting to solve some of the serious instrumentation problems. A brief review is given of research on the liquid state of metals, x-ray diffraction studies of liquid metals, liquefied gases, and organic liquids. The resulting publications are listed.

A brief summary is given of experimental and theoretical studies on forces and configurations at the molecular level in simple liquids. Particular attention was given to the critical region of fluids. The 35 publications resulting from the work are listed.

The experimentally determined electronic radial distribution function for liquid nitrogen at 7 atmospheres and -193C is reported, indicating an average coordination shell centred at 4.0A containing 15 molecules. Subsidiary peaks in the distribution at about 2.2A are shown to very likely arise from truncation of the Fourier integral. Analysis reveals that a restricted increase in the range of diffraction data may actually increase the prominence of certain error features. A cylindrical beryllium sample cell was used for a set of measurements at 100 psi. The central portion of the cell is the active sample area which is irradiated during the experiments. To the right and left are larger cylindrical sections which fit snugly into a cell holder. Those latter areas affect thermal communication between the sample and a liquid-nitrogen heat sink. The left section serves as a thermocouple well which permits positioning a thermocouple within 0.04 in. of the sample cavity. At the extreme right end of the assembly is a collar which is required for a pressure seal. This sample cell was constructed from hot extruded beryllium powder. The cell was used successfully for x-ray diffraction measurements on a sample of liquid nitrogen confined at 100 psi and -193C. An estimate of the x-ray absorption within the sample cell is obtained by considering a beam scattered from the axis of the cylindrical sample.
