Stable $^{205}$Tl ions have the lowest known energy threshold for capturing electron neutrinos ($\nu_e$) of ${ E}_{\nu_e}\ge50.6$\,keV. The Lorandite Experiment (LOREX), proposed in the 1980s, aims at obtaining the longtime averaged solar neutrino flux by utilizing natural deposits of Tl-bearing lorandite ores. To determine the $\nu_e$ capture cross section, it is required to know the strength of the weak transition connecting the ground state of $^{205}$Tl and the 2.3 keV first excited state in $^{205}$Pb. The only way to experimentally address this transition is to measure the bound-state beta decay ($\beta_{b}$) of fully ionized $\mathrm{^{205}Tl^{81+}}$ ions. After three decades of meticulous preparation, the half-life of the $\beta_{b}$ decay of $\mathrm{^{205}Tl^{81+}}$ has been measured to be $291_{-27}^{+33}$ days using the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt. The longer measured half-life compared to theoretical estimates reduces the expected signal-to-noise ratio in the LOREX, thus challenging its feasibility.

Let $\Bbbk$ be a field, $H$ a Hopf algebra over $\Bbbk$, and $R = (_iM_j)_{1 \leq i,j \leq n}$ a generalized matrix algebra. In this work, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions for $H$ to act partially on $R$. To achieve this, we introduce the concept of an opposite covariant pair and demonstrate that it satisfies a universal property. In the special case where $H = \Bbbk G$ is the group algebra of a group $G$, we recover the conditions given in \cite{BP} for the existence of a unital partial action of $G$ on $R$.

Decomposing theoretical nuclear mass predictions into a liquid-drop parametrization and local shell effects shows that r-process abundances are virtually insensitive to large variations of the masses which originate from nuclear bulk properties of the model, such as the symmetry energy. Therefore, experimental and theoretical studies of masses devoted to r-process applications, such as the nucleosynthesis in the ejecta of neutron star mergers, should focus on the physical origin of local changes in mass trends without necessarily providing highly accurate mass determinations of individual nuclei., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

A large number of R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation for heavy elements (Z > 70) have been performed in recent years for applications in fusion and astrophysics research. With the expanding interest in heavy ions due to kilonova (KN) events such as AT2017gfo and GRB230307A, this new data can be utilised for the diagnosis and study of observed KN spectra. In this work recently computed electron-impact excitation effective collision strengths are used, for the first three ionisation stages of tungsten (W, Z = 74), platinum (Pt, Z = 78) and gold (Au, Z = 79), to construct basic collisional radiative models tailored for the late stage nebular phases of KN. Line luminosities are calculated at a range of electron temperatures and densities and the strengths of these lines for a representative ion mass are compared. For the case of W III, these optically thin intensities are additionally used to constrain the mass of this ion in both AT2017gfo and GRB230307A. Comparing with theoretical predictions of nucleosynthesis yields from neutron star merger simulations, broad agreement with the inferred ion masses of W is found. Furthermore, we highlight the value of W measurements by showing that the abundance of other groups of elements and outflow properties are constrained by exploiting theoretically motivated correlations between the abundance of W and that of lanthanides or third r-process peak elements.

Recently it was demonstrated that by adding to the Einstein-Hilbert action a series in powers of the curvature invariants with specially chosen coefficients one can obtain a theory of gravity which has spherically symmetric solutions describing regular black holes. Its reduced action depends on a function of one of the basic curvature invariants of the corresponding metric. In this paper we study a generalization of this model to the case when this function depends on all the basic curvature invariants. We show that the metrics which are solutions of such a model possess a universal scaling property. We demonstrate that there exists a special class of such models for which the "master" equation basic curvature invariant is a linear second order ordinary differential equation. We specify a domain in the space of parameters of the model for which the corresponding solutions describe regular static spherically symmetric black holes and study their properties., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Radioactive nuclei with lifetimes on the order of millions of years can reveal the formation history of the Sun and active nucleosynthesis occurring at the time and place of its birth. Among such nuclei whose decay signatures are found in the oldest meteorites, $^{205}$Pb is a powerful example, as it is produced exclusively by slow neutron captures (the s process), with most being synthesized in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. However, making accurate abundance predictions for $^{205}$Pb has so far been impossible because the weak decay rates of $^{205}$Pb and $^{205}$Tl are very uncertain at stellar temperatures. To constrain these decay rates, we measured for the first time the bound-state $\beta^-$ decay of fully ionized $^{205}$Tl$^{81+}$, an exotic decay mode that only occurs in highly charged ions. The measured half-life is 4.7 times longer than the previous theoretical estimate and our 10% experimental uncertainty has eliminated the main nuclear-physics limitation. With new, experimentally backed decay rates, we used AGB stellar models to calculate $^{205}$Pb yields. Propagating those yields with basic galactic chemical evolution (GCE) and comparing with the $^{205}$Pb/$^{204}$Pb ratio from meteorites, we determined the isolation time of solar material inside its parent molecular cloud. We find positive isolation times that are consistent with the other s-process short-lived radioactive nuclei found in the early Solar System. Our results reaffirm the site of the Sun's birth as a long-lived, giant molecular cloud and support the use of the $^{205}$Pb--$^{205}$Tl decay system as a chronometer in the early Solar System., Comment: 21 pages and 11 figures/tables. The time until black hole formation in a binary neutron-star (NS) merger contains invaluable information about the nuclear equation of state (EoS) but has thus far been difficult to measure. We propose a new way to constrain the merger remnant's NS lifetime, which is based on the tendency of the NS remnant neutrino-driven winds to enrich the ejected material with helium. Based on the He I $\lambda 1083.3$ nm line, we show that the feature around 800-1200 nm in AT2017gfo at 4.4 days seems inconsistent with a helium mass fraction of $X_{\mathrm{He}} \gtrsim 0.05$ in the polar ejecta. Recent neutrino-hydrodynamic simulations of merger remnants are only compatible with this limit if the NS remnant collapses within 20-30 ms. Such a short lifetime implies that the total binary mass of GW170817, $M_\mathrm{\rm tot}$, lay close to the threshold binary mass for direct gravitational collapse, $M_\mathrm{thres}$, for which we estimate $M_{\mathrm{thres}}\lesssim 2.93 M_\odot$. This upper bound on $M_\mathrm{thres}$ yields upper limits on the radii and maximum mass of cold, non-rotating NSs, which rule out simultaneously large values for both quantities. In combination with causality arguments, this result implies a maximum NS mass of $M_\mathrm{max}\lesssim2.3 M_\odot$. The combination of all limits constrains the radii of 1.6 M$_\odot$ NSs to about 12$\pm$1 km for $M_\mathrm{max}$ = 2.0 M$_\odot$ and 11.5$\pm$1 km for $M_\mathrm{max}$ = 2.15 M$_\odot$. This $\sim2$ km allowable range then tightens significantly for $M_\mathrm{max}$ above $\approx2.15$ M$_\odot$. This rules out a significant number of current EoS models. The short NS lifetime also implies that a black-hole torus, not a highly magnetized NS, was the central engine powering the relativistic jet of GRB170817A. Our work motivates future developments... Given a unital partial action $\alpha $ of a group $G$ on a commutative ring $R$ we denote by $ {\bf PicS} _{R^{\alpha}}(R) $ the Picard monoid of the isomorphism classes of partially invertible $R$-bimodules, which are central over the subring $R^{\alpha} \subseteq R$ of $\alpha$-invariant elements, and consider a specific unital partial representation $\Theta : G \to {\bf PicS} _{R^{\alpha}}(R), $ along with the abelian group $\mathcal {C}(\Theta/R)$ of the isomorphism classes of partial generalized crossed products related to $\Theta,$ which already showed their importance in obtaining a partial action analogue of the Chase-Harrison-Rosenberg seven-term exact sequence. We give a description of $\mathcal {C}(\Theta/R)$ in terms partial generalized products of the form $\mathcal D(f \Theta)$ where $f$ is partial $1$-cocycle of $G$ with values in a submonoid of $ {\bf PicS}_{R^{\alpha}}(R).$ Assuming that $G$ is finite and that $R^{\alpha} \subseteq R$ is a partial Galois extension, we prove that any Azumaya $R^\alpha$-algebra, containing $R$ as a maximal commutative subalgebra, is isomorphic to a partial generalized crossed product. Furthermore, we show that the relative Brauer group $\mathcal B(R/R^\alpha)$ can be seen as a quotient of $\mathcal {C}(\Theta/R)$ by a subgroup isomorphic to the Picard group of $R.$ Finally, we prove that the analogue of the Chase-Harrison-Rosenberg sequence, obtained earlier for partial Galois extensions of commutative rings, can be derived from a recent seven-term exact sequence established in a non-commutative setting.

Neutron star (NS) mergers are known to produce heavy elements through rapid neutron capture (r-process) nucleosynthesis. Actinides are expected to be created solely by the r-process in the most neutron rich environments. Confirming if NS mergers provide the requisite conditions for actinide creation is therefore central to determining their origin in the Universe. Actinide signatures in kilonova (KN) spectra may yield an answer, provided adequate models are available in order to interpret observational data. In this study, we investigate actinide signatures in neutron rich merger ejecta. We use three ejecta models with different compositions and radioactive power, generated by nucleosynthesis calculations using the same initial electron fraction ($Y_e = 0.15$) but with different nuclear physics inputs and thermodynamic expansion history. These are evolved from 10 - 100 days after merger using the SUMO non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) radiative transfer code. We highlight how uncertainties in nuclear properties, as well as choices in thermodynamic trajectory, may yield entirely different outputs for equal values of $Y_e$. We consider an actinide-free model and two actinide-rich models, and find that the emergent spectra and lightcurve evolution are significantly different depending on the amount of actinides present, and the overall decay properties of the models. We also present potential key actinide spectral signatures, of which doubly ionized $_{89}$Ac and $_{90}$Th may be particularly interesting as spectral indicators of actinide presence in KN ejecta., Comment: 21 pages with appendices, 11 figures, published in MNRAS

Flow shops are widely studied machine environments in which all jobs must visit all machines in the same order. While conventional flow shops assume that each job traverses the shop only once, many industrial environments require jobs to loop through the shop multiple times before completion. This means that after traversing the shop and completing its processing on the last machine, a job must return to the first machine and traverse the shop again until it has completed all its required loops. Such a setting, referred to as a flow shop with reentry, has numerous applications in industry, e.g., semiconductor manufacturing. The planning problem is to schedule all loops of all jobs while minimizing the total weighted completion time. In this paper, we consider reentrant flow shops with unit processing times. We show that this problem is strongly NP-hard if the number of machines is part of the input. We propose the Least Remaining Loops First (LRL) priority rule and show that it minimizes the total unweighted completion time. Then, we analyze the Weighted Least Remaining Loops First (WLRL) priority rule and show that it has a worst-case performance ratio of $(1+\sqrt{2})/2$ (about 1.2). Additionally, we present a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) and a pseudo-polynomial time algorithm if the number of machines in the flow shop is fixed.

The aim of the present work is a state-by-state analysis of possible E1 and M1 transitions in $^{58}$Ni with a high-resolution (p,p') experiment at 295 MeV and very forward angles including 0{\deg} and a comparison to results from studies of the dipole strength with the $(\gamma,\gamma')$ and (e,e') reactions. The E1 and M1 cross sections of individual peaks in the spectra are deduced with a multipole decomposition analysis and converted to reduced E1 and spin-M1 transition strengths using the virtual photon and the unit cross-section method, respectively. Despite the high level density good agreement is obtained for the deduced excitation energies of J = 1 states in the three types of experiments indicating that the same states are excited. The B(E1) and B(M1) strengths from the $(\gamma,\gamma^\prime)$ experiments are systematically smaller than in the present work because of the lack of information on branching ratios to lower-lying excited states and the competition of particle emission. Fair agreement with the B(M1) strengths extracted from the (e,e') data is obtained after removal of E1 transitions uniquely assigned in the present work, which belong to a low-energy toroidal mode with unusual properties mimicking M1 excitations in electron scattering. The experimental M1 strength distribution is compared to large-scale shell-model calculations with the effective GXPF1A and KB3G interactions. They provide a good description of the isospin splitting and the running sum of the M1 strength. A quenching factor 0.74 for the spin-isospin part of the M1 operator is needed to attain quantitative agreement with the data., Comment: 16 pages, 15 figures

This paper resolves a long-standing open question in bicriteria scheduling regarding the complexity of a single machine scheduling problem which combines the number of tardy jobs and the maximal tardiness criteria. We use the lexicographic approach with the maximal tardiness being the primary criterion. Accordingly, the objective is to find, among all solutions minimizing the maximal tardiness, the one which has the minimum number of tardy jobs. The complexity of this problem has been open for over thirty years, and has been known since then to be one of the most challenging open questions in multicriteria scheduling. We resolve this question by proving that the problem is strongly NP-hard. We also prove that the problem is at least weakly NP-hard when we switch roles between the two criteria (i.e., when the number of tardy jobs is the primary criterion). Finally, we provide hardness results for two other approaches (constraint and a priori approaches) to deal with these two criteria.

We compute $\beta$-decay half-lives of isotonic nuclear chains located at neutron shell closures $N=50$, $82$, $126$ and $184$, which are of particular importance for the $r$-process nucleosynthesis, and study the role of first-forbidden transitions in a framework that includes complex nucleonic correlations beyond the quasiparticle random phase approximation. Such correlations are accounted for by coupling single nucleons to collective degrees of freedom (nuclear vibrations), and are found essential to reproduce available experimental $\beta$-decay rates and more precise many-body methods. We find that the nucleon-vibration correlations tend to decrease the probability of decay via first-forbidden transition near stability, as they enhance Gamow-Teller transitions at low energy. While in the lighter systems allowed transitions dominate, the decay of $N=126$ and $N=184$ nuclei is found to occur to a large extent via first-forbidden transitions, and in particular those induced by $1^-$ and $0^-$ operators. Overall the many-body method based on nucleon-vibration coupling provides an ideal framework for future large-scale calculations. Fast flavor conversions (FFCs) of neutrinos, which can occur in core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe), are multiangle effects. They depend on the angular distribution of the neutrino's electron lepton number (ELN). In this work, we present a comprehensive study of the FFCs by solving the multienergy and multiangle quantum kinetic equations with an extended set of collisional weak processes based on a static and spherically symmetric CCSN matter background profile. We investigate the emergence and evolution of FFCs in models featuring different ELN angular distributions, considering scenarios with two and three neutrino flavors. The spectrogram method is utilized to illustrate the small-scale spatial structure, and we show that this structure of neutrino flavor coherence and number densities in the nonlinear regime is qualitatively consistent with the dispersion relation analysis. On the coarse-grained level, we find that different asymptotic states can be achieved following the FFCs depending on the locations and shapes of the ELN distributions, despite sharing a common feature of the elimination of the ELN angular crossing. While equilibration among different neutrino flavors may be achieved immediately after the prompt FFCs, it is not a general outcome of the asymptotic state, as subsequent feedback effects from collisional neutrino-matter interactions come into play, particularly for cases where FFCs occur inside the neutrinosphere. The impacts of FFCs and the feedback effect on the net neutrino heating rates, the equilibrium electron fraction of CCSN matter, and the free-streaming neutrino energy spectra are quantitatively assessed. We compute the static density and spin structure factors in the long wavelength limit for pure neutron matter at subsaturation densities relevant to core-collapse supernovae within the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (BHF) approach. The BHF results are reliable at high densities, extending beyond the validity of the virial expansion. Motivated by the similarities between the dilute neutron gas and a unitary gas, we propose a phenomenological approach to derive the static structures with finite momentum transfer as well as the dynamic ones with simple analytical expressions, based on the computed static structures in the long wavelength limit. We also compare the in-medium neutrino-neutron scattering cross sections using different structure factors. The classical notion of twisted product is studied in the context of partial actions, in particular, we show that the globalization of a partial action is a twisted product. In addition, we establish conditions for the metrizability of twisted products, and some homotopy and categorical properties are proved. Furthermore, sufficient conditions for the enveloping space to be an equivariant absolute neighborhood extensor are also studied.

Given a smooth partial action $\alpha$ of a Lie groupoid $G$ on a smooth manifold $M,$ we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for $\alpha$ to be globalizable with smooth globalization. As an application, we provide results on the differentiable structure of orbit and stabilizer spaces induced by $\alpha,$ which leads to other criteria for its globalization in terms of its orbit maps in the case that $\alpha$ is free and transitive. Further, under the assumption that $\alpha$ is free and proper, we prove that there exists exactly one differentiable structure on the quotient structure of the orbit equivalence space $M/G$ such that the quotient map $\pi:M\to M/G$ is a submersion

In line with the Astro2020 Decadal Report State of the Profession findings and the NASA core value of Inclusion, the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Bridge Program was created to provide financial and programmatic support to efforts that work to increase the representation and inclusion of students from under-represented minorities in the STEM fields. To ensure an effective program, particularly for those who are often left out of these conversations, the NASA SMD Bridge Program Workshop was developed as a way to gather feedback from a diverse group of people about their unique needs and interests. The Early Career Perspectives Working Group was tasked with examining the current state of bridge programs, academia in general, and its effect on students and early career professionals. The working group, comprised of 10 early career and student members, analyzed the discussions and responses from workshop breakout sessions and two surveys, as well as their own experiences, to develop specific recommendations and metrics for implementing a successful and supportive bridge program. Recent analysis of the kilonova, AT2017gfo, has indicated that this event was highly spherical. This may challenge hydrodynamics simulations of binary neutron star mergers, which usually predict a range of asymmetries, and radiative transfer simulations show a strong direction dependence. Here we investigate whether the synthetic spectra from a 3D kilonova simulation of asymmetric ejecta from a hydrodynamical merger simulation can be compatible with the observational constraints suggesting a high degree of sphericity in AT2017gfo. Specifically, we determine whether fitting a simple P-Cygni line profile model leads to a value for the photospheric velocity that is consistent with the value obtained from the expanding photosphere method. We would infer that our kilonova simulation is highly spherical at early times, when the spectra resemble a blackbody distribution. The two independently inferred photospheric velocities can be very similar, implying a high degree of sphericity, which can be as spherical as inferred for AT2017gfo, demonstrating that the photosphere can appear spherical even for asymmetrical ejecta. The last-interaction velocities of radiation escaping the simulation show a high degree of sphericity, supporting the inferred symmetry of the photosphere. We find that when the synthetic spectra resemble a blackbody the expanding photosphere method can be used to obtain an accurate luminosity distance (within 4-7 per cent)., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Let $n$ be a positive integer and $R=(M_{ij})_{1\leq i,j\leq n}$ be a generalized matrix ring. For each $1\leq i,j\leq n$, let $I_i$ be an ideal of the ring $R_i:=M_{ii}$ and denote $I_{ij}=I_iM_{ij}+M_{ij}I_j$. We give sufficient conditions for the subset $I=(I_{ij})_{1\leq i,j\leq n}$ of $R$ to be an ideal of $R$. Also, suppose that $\alpha^{(i)}$ is a partial action of a group $\mathtt{G}$ on $R_i$, for all $1\leq i\leq n$. We construct, under certain conditions, a partial action $\gamma$ of $\mathtt{G}$ on $R$ such that $\gamma$ restricted to $R_i$ coincides with $\alpha^{(i)}$. We study the relation between this construction and the notion of Morita equivalent partial group action given in [1]. Moreover, we investigate properties related to Galois theory for the extension $R^{\gamma}\subset R$. Some examples to illustrate the results are considered in the last part of the paper.
