Observations suggest that filaments in molecular clouds can grow by mass accretion while forming cores via fragmentation. Here we present one of the first large sample studies of filament accretion using velocity gradient measurements of star-forming filaments on the $\sim 0.05$ pc scale with NH$_3$ observations of the Perseus Molecular Cloud, primarily obtained as a part of the GBT Ammonia Survey (GAS). In this study, we find significant correlations between velocity gradient, velocity dispersion, mass per unit length, and the number of cores per unit length of the Perseus filaments. Our results suggest a scenario in which filaments not only grow through mass accretion but also form new cores continuously in the process well into the thermally supercritical regime. Such behavior is contrary to that expected from isolated filament models but consistent with how filaments form within a more realistic cloud environment, suggesting that the cloud environment plays a crucial role in shaping core formation and evolution in filaments. Furthermore, even though velocity gradients within filaments are not oriented randomly, we find no correlation between velocity gradient orientation and the filament properties we analyzed. Context. Turbulence is a key component of molecular cloud structure. It is usually described by a cascade of energy down to the dissipation scale. The power spectrum for subsonic incompressible turbulence is $k^{-5/3}$, while for supersonic turbulence it is $k^{-2}$. Aims. We aim to determine the power spectrum in an actively star-forming molecular cloud, from parsec scales down to the expected magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave cutoff (dissipation scale). Methods. We analyze observations of the nearby NGC 1333 star-forming region in three different tracers to cover the different scales from $\sim$10 pc down to 20 mpc. The largest scales are covered with the low density gas tracer $^{13}$CO (1-0) obtained with single dish, the intermediate scales are covered with single-dish observations of the C$^{18}$O (3-2) line, while the smallest scales are covered in H$^{13}$CO$^+$ (1-0) and HNC (1-0) with a combination of NOEMA interferometer and IRAM 30m single dish observations. The complementarity of these observations enables us to generate a combined power spectrum covering more than two orders of magnitude in spatial scale. Results. We derive the power spectrum in an active star-forming region spanning more than 2 decades of spatial scales. The power spectrum of the intensity maps shows a single power-law behavior, with an exponent of 2.9$\pm$0.1 and no evidence of dissipation. Moreover, there is evidence for the power-spectrum of the ions to have more power at smaller scales than the neutrals, which is opposite from theoretical expectations. Conclusions. We use 1-4" (300-1200 au) resolution 12CO(2-1) data from the MASSES (Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA) project to measure the projected opening angles of 46 protostellar outflows in the Perseus Molecular Cloud, 37 of which are measured with sufficiently high confidence to use in further analysis. We find that there is a statistically significant difference in the distributions of outflow opening angles for Class 0 and Class I outflows, with a distinct lack of both wide-angle Class 0 outflows and highly collimated Class I outflows. Synthesizing our results with several previous studies, we find that outflows widen with age through the Class 0 stage but do not continue to widen in the Class I stage. The maximum projected opening angle reached is approximately 90 degrees +/- 20 degrees, with the transition between widening and remaining constant occurring near the boundary between the Class 0 and Class I phases of evolution. While the volume fractions occupied by these outflows are no more than a few tens of percent of the total core volume, at most, recent theoretical work suggests outflows may still be capable of playing a central role in setting the low star formation efficiencies of 25%-50% observed on core scales., Comment: 35 pages, accepted by MNRAS

(abridged) We have mapped the prestellar core H-MM1 in Ophiuchus in rotational lines of ortho-H2D+ (oH2D+), N2H+, and DCO+ at the wavelength 0.8 mm with the Large APEX sub-Millimeter Array (LAsMA) multibeam receiver of the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope. We also ran a series of chemistry models to predict the abundance distributions of the observed molecules, and to estimate the effect of the cosmic-ray ionisation rate on their abundances. The three line maps show different distributions. The oH2D+ map is extended and outlines the general structure of the core, while N2H+ mainly shows the density maxima, and the DCO+ emission peaks are shifted towards one edge of the core where a region of enhanced desorption has been found previously. According to the chemical simulation, the fractional oH2D+ abundance remains relatively high in the centre of the core, and its column density correlates strongly with the cosmic-ray ionisation rate. Simulated line maps constrain the cosmic-ray ionisation rate per hydrogen molecule to be low, between 5e-18/s and 1e-17/s in the H-MM1 core. This estimate agrees with the gas temperature measured in the core. Modelling line emission of oH2D+ provides a straightforward method of determining the cosmic-ray ionisation rate in dense clouds, where the primary ion, H3+, is not observable., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

A compact source, G0.02467-0.0727, was detected in ALMA \threemm observations in continuum and very broad line emission. The continuum emission has a spectral index $\alpha\approx3.3$, suggesting that the emission is from dust. The line emission is detected in several transitions of CS, SO, and SO$_2$ and exhibits a line width FWHM $\approx160$ \kms. The line profile appears Gaussian. The emission is weakly spatially resolved, coming from an area on the sky $\lesssim1"$ in diameter ($\lesssim10^4$ AU at the distance of the Galactic Center; GC). The centroid velocity is $v_{LSR}\approx40$-$50$ \kms, which is consistent with a location in the Galactic Center. With multiple SO lines detected, and assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions, $T_\mathrm{LTE} = 13$ K, which is colder than seen in typical GC clouds, though we cannot rule out low-density, subthermally excited, warmer gas. Despite the high velocity dispersion, no emission is observed from SiO, suggesting that there are no strong ($\gtrsim10~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$) shocks in the molecular gas. There are no detections at other wavelengths, including X-ray, infrared, and radio. We consider several explanations for the Millimeter Ultra-Broad Line Object (MUBLO), including protostellar outflow, explosive outflow, collapsing cloud, evolved star, stellar merger, high-velocity compact cloud, intermediate mass black hole, and background galaxy. We surveyed nearly all the embedded protostars in seven nearby clouds (Corona Australis, Aquila, Chamaeleon I & II, Ophiuchus North, Ophiuchus, Serpens) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at 1.3mm observations with a resolution of 0.1$"$. This survey detected 184 protostellar disks, 90 of which were observed at a resolution of 14-18 au, making it one of the most comprehensive high-resolution disk samples across various protostellar evolutionary stages to date. Our key findings include the detection of new annular substructures in two Class I and two flat-spectrum sources, while 21 embedded protostars exhibit distinct asymmetries or substructures in their disks. We find that protostellar disks have a substantially large variability in their radii across all evolutionary classes. In particular, the fraction of large disks with sizes above 60\,au decreases as the protostar evolves from Class 0 to Class I. Compiling the literature data, we discovered an increasing trend of the gas disk radii to dust disk radii ratio ($R_{\rm gas,Kep}/R_{\rm mm}$) with increasing bolometric temperature (${\rm T}_{\rm bol}$). Our results indicate that the dust and gas disk radii decouple during the early Class I stage. However, in the Class 0 stage, the dust and gas disk sizes are similar, which allows a direct comparison between models and observational data at the earliest stages of protostellar evolution. We show that the distribution of radii in the 52 Class 0 disks in our sample is in high tension with various disk formation models, indicating that protostellar disk formation remains an unsolved question., Comment: Accepted by ApJ 2024.7.8, 70 pages, 30 figures

The detection of narrow channels of accretion toward protostellar disks, known as streamers, have increased in number in the last few years. However, it is unclear if streamers are a common feature around protostars that were previously missed, or if they are a rare phenomenon. Our goals are to obtain the incidence of streamers toward a region of clustered star formation and to trace the origins of their gas, to determine if they originate within the filamentary structure of molecular clouds or from beyond. We used combined observations of the nearby NGC 1333 star-forming region, carried out with the NOEMA interferometer and the IRAM 30m single dish. Our observations cover the area between the IRAS 4 and SVS 13 systems. We traced the chemically fresh gas within NGC 1333 with HC3N molecular gas emission and the structure of the fibers in this region with N2H+ emission. We fit multiple velocity components in both maps and used clustering algorithms to recover velocity-coherent structures. We find streamer candidates toward 7 out of 16 young stellar objects within our field of view. This represents an incidence of approximately 40\% of young stellar objects with streamer candidates when looking at a clustered star forming region. The incidence increases to about 60\% when we considered only embedded protostars. All streamers are found in HC3N emission. Given the different velocities between HC3N and N2H+ emission, and the fact that, by construction, N2H+ traces the fiber structure, we suggest that the gas that forms the streamers comes from outside the fibers. Streamers bring gas from outer regions to protostellar systems and could change the chemical composition around protostars and protoplanetary disks. We have carried out mapping observations of carbon-chain species (HC$_3$N, HC$_5$N, CCH, and CCS) in the 3mm and 7mm bands toward the streamer flowing to the Class 0 young stellar object (YSO) Per-emb-2 with the Nobeyama 45m radio telescope. A region with a diameter of $\sim0.04$ pc is located north with a distance of $\sim 20,500$ au from the YSO. The streamer connects to this north region which is the origin of the streamer. The reservoir has high density and low temperature ($n_{\rm {H}_2} \approx 1.9 \times 10^4$ cm$^{-3}$, $T_{\rm {kin}} = 10$ K), which are similar to those of early stage starless cores. By comparisons with the observed abundance ratios of CCS/HC$_3$N to the chemical simulations, the reservoir and streamer are found to be chemically young. The total mass available for the streamer is derived to be $24-34$ M$_{\odot}$. If all of the gas in the reservoir will accrete onto the Per-emb-2 protostellar system, the lifetime of the streamer has been estimated at ($1.1 - 3.2$)$\times10^{5}$ yr, suggesting that the mass accretion via the streamer would continue until the end of the Class I stage., Comment: Accepted for The Astrophysical Journal (ApJ), 18 pages, 10 figures, 6 tables

Electron fraction and cosmic-ray ionization rates (CRIR) in star-forming regions are important quantities in astrochemical modeling and are critical to the degree of coupling between neutrals, ions, and electrons, which regulates the dynamics of the magnetic field. However, these are difficult quantities to estimate. We aim to derive the electron fraction and CRIR maps of an active star-forming region. We combined observations of the nearby NGC 1333 star-forming region carried out with the NOEMA interferometer and IRAM 30-m single dish to generate high spatial dynamic range maps of different molecular transitions. We used the DCO$^+$ and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ ratio (in addition to complementary data) to estimate the electron fraction and produce cosmic-ray ionization rate maps. We derived the first large-area electron fraction and CRIR resolved maps in a star-forming region, with typical values of $10^{-6.5}$ and $10^{-16.5}$ s$^{-1}$, respectively. The maps present clear evidence of enhanced values around embedded young stellar objects (YSOs). This provides strong evidence for locally accelerated cosmic rays. We also found a strong enhancement toward the northwest region in the map that might be related either to an interaction with a bubble or to locally generated cosmic rays by YSOs. We used the typical electron fraction and derived a MHD turbulence dissipation scale of 0.054 pc, which could be tested with future observations. We found a higher cosmic-ray ionization rate compared to the canonical value for $N({\rm H_2})=10^{21}-10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ of $10^{-17}$ s$^{-1}$ in the region, and it is likely generated by the accreting YSOs. The high value of the electron fraction suggests that new disks will form from gas in the ideal-MHD limit. We present 870 um polarimetric observations toward 61 protostars in the Orion molecular clouds, with ~400 au (1") resolution using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. We successfully detect dust polarization and outflow emission in 56 protostars, in 16 of them the polarization is likely produced by self-scattering. Self-scattering signatures are seen in several Class 0 sources, suggesting that grain growth appears to be significant in disks at earlier protostellar phases. For the rest of the protostars, the dust polarization traces the magnetic field, whose morphology can be approximately classified into three categories: standard-hourglass, rotated-hourglass (with its axis perpendicular to outflow), and spiral-like morphology. 40.0% (+-3.0%) of the protostars exhibit a mean magnetic field direction approximately perpendicular to the outflow on several 100--1000 au scales. However, in the remaining sample, this relative orientation appears to be random, probably due to the complex set of morphologies observed. Furthermore, we classify the protostars into three types based on the C17O (3--2) velocity envelope's gradient: perpendicular to outflow, non-perpendicular to outflow, and unresolved gradient (<1.0~km/s/arcsec). In protostars with a velocity gradient perpendicular to outflow, the magnetic field lines are preferentially perpendicular to outflow, most of them exhibit a rotated hourglass morphology, suggesting that the magnetic field has been overwhelmed by gravity and angular momentum. Spiral-like magnetic fields are associated with envelopes having large velocity gradients, indicating that the rotation motions are strong enough to twist the field lines. W43-main is a massive molecular complex located at the interaction of the Scutum arm and the Galactic bar undergoing starburst activities. We aim to investigate the gas dynamics, in particular, the prevailing shock signatures from the cloud to clump scale and assess the impact of shocks on the formation of dense gas and early-stage cores. We have carried out NOEMA and IRAM-30m observations at 3 mm with an angular resolution of $\sim$0.1 pc towards five massive clumps in W43 main. We use CH$_{3}$CCH and H$_{2}$CS lines to trace the extended gas temperature and CH$_{3}$OH lines to probe the volume density of the dense gas ($\gtrsim$10$^{5}$ cm$^{-3}$). The emission of SiO (2-1) is extensive across the region ($\sim$4 pc) and is mostly contained within a low-velocity regime, hinting at a large-scale origin of the shocks. The position-velocity maps of multiple tracers show systematic spatio-kinematic offsets supporting the cloud-cloud collision/merging scenario. We identify an additional extended velocity component in CCH emission, which coincides with one of the velocity components of the larger scale $^{13}$CO (2-1) emission, likely representing an outer, less dense gas layer in the cloud merging process. We find that the V-shaped, asymmetric SiO wings are tightly correlated with localised gas density enhancements, which is direct evidence of dense gas formation and accumulation in shocks. We resolve two categories of NH$_{2}$D cores: ones exhibiting only subsonic to transonic velocity dispersion, and the others with an additional supersonic velocity dispersion. The centroid velocities of the latter cores are correlated with the shock front seen by SiO. The kinematics of the $\sim$0.1 pc NH$_{2}$D cores are heavily imprinted by shock activities, and may represent a population of early-stage cores forming around the shock interface., Comment: 35 pages, 34 figures (including appendices); Accepted in A&A

Aims. We aim to study the structure and kinematics of the two filaments inside the subsonic core Barnard 5 in Perseus using high-resolution ($\approx$ 2400 au) NH3 data and a multi-component fit analysis. Methods. We used observations of NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions using the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). We smoothed the data to a beam of 8'' to reliably fit multiple velocity components towards the two filamentary structures identified in B5. Results. Along with the core and cloud components, which dominate the flux in the line of sight, we detected two components towards the two filaments showing signs of infall. We also detected two additional components that can possibly trace new material falling into the subsonic core of B5. Conclusions. Following comparison with previous simulations of filament formation scenarios in planar geometry, we conclude that either the formation of the B5 filaments is likely to be rather cylindrically symmetrical or the filaments are magnetically supported. We also estimate infall rates of $1.6\times10^{-4}\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$ and $1.8\times10^{-4}\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$ (upper limits) for the material being accreted onto the two filaments. At these rates, the filament masses can change significantly during the core lifetime. We also estimate an upper limit of $3.5\times10^{-5}\,M_\odot\,yr^{-1}$ for the rate of possible infall onto the core itself. The internal velocity structure within dense gaseous cores plays a crucial role in providing the initial conditions for star formation in molecular clouds. However, the kinematic properties of dense gas at core scales (~0.01 - 0.1 pc) has not been extensively characterized because of instrument limitations until the unique capabilities of GBT-Argus became available. The ongoing GBT-Argus Large Program, Dynamics in Star-forming Cores (DiSCo) thus aims to investigate the origin and distribution of angular momenta of star-forming cores. DiSCo will survey all starless cores and Class 0 protostellar cores in the Perseus molecular complex down to ~0.01 pc scales with < 0.05 km/s velocity resolution using the dense gas tracer N$_2$H$^+$. Here, we present the first datasets from DiSCo toward the B1 and NGC 1333 regions in Perseus. Our results suggest that a dense core's internal velocity structure has little correlation with other core-scale properties, indicating these gas motions may be originated externally from cloud-scale turbulence. These first datasets also reaffirm the ability of GBT-Argus for studying dense core velocity structure and provided an empirical basis for future studies that address the angular momentum problem with a statistically broad sample., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We determine the ortho/para ratios of NH2D and NHD2 in two dense, starless cores, where their formation is supposed to be dominated by gas-phase reactions, which, in turn, is predicted to result in deviations from the statistical spin ratios. The Large APEX sub-Millimeter Array (LAsMA) multibeam receiver of the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope was used to observe the prestellar cores H-MM1 and Oph D in Ophiuchus in the ground-state lines of ortho and para NH2D and NHD2. The fractional abundances of these molecules were derived employing 3D radiative transfer modelling, using different assumptions about the abundance profiles as functions of density. We also ran gas-grain chemistry models with different scenarios concerning proton or deuteron exchanges and chemical desorption from grains to find out if one of these models can reproduce the observed spin ratios. The observationally deduced ortho/para ratios of NH2D and NHD2 are in both cores within 10% of their statistical values 3 and 2, respectively, and taking 3-sigma limits, deviations from these of about 20% are allowed. Of the chemistry models tested here, the model that assumes proton hop (as opposed to full scrambling) in reactions contributing to ammonia formation, and a constant efficiency of chemical desorption, comes nearest to the observed abundances and spin ratios. The nuclear spin ratios derived here are in contrast with spin-state chemistry models that assume full scrambling in proton donation and hydrogen abstraction reactions leading to deuterated ammonia. The efficiency of chemical desorption influences strongly the predicted abundances of NH3, NH2D, and NHD2, but has a lesser effect on their ortho/para ratios. For these the proton exchange scenario in the gas is decisive. Pre-stellar cores represent a critical evolutionary phase in low-mass star formation. We aim to unveil the detailed thermal structure and density distribution of three early-stage cores, starless core L1517B, and prestellar core L694-2 and L429, with the high angular resolution observations of the NH$_{3}$ (1,1) and (2,2) inversion transitions obtained with VLA and GBT. In addition, we explore where/if NH$_{3}$ depletes in the central regions. Applying the mid-infrared extinction method to the $\textit{Spitzer}$ 8$~\mu$m map we obtain a high angular resolution hydrogen column density map, and derive the gas density profile to assess the variation of NH$_{3}$ abundance as a function of gas volume density. The measured temperature profiles of L429 and L1517B show a minor decrease towards the core center, dropping from $\sim$9\~K to below 8\~K, and $\sim$11 K to 10 K, while L694-2 has a rather uniform temperature distribution around $\sim$9 K. Among the three cores, L429 has the highest central gas density, close to sonic velocity line-width, and largest localised velocity gradient, all indicative of an advanced evolutionary stage. We resolve that the abundance of NH$_{3}$ becomes two times lower in the central region of L429, occurring around a gas density of 4.4$\times$10$^{4}$$~cm^{-3}$. Compared to Ophiuchus/H-MM1 which shows an even stronger drop of the NH$_{3}$ abundance at 2$\times$10$^{5}$$~cm^{-3}$, the abundance variations of the three cores plus Ophiuchus/H-MM1 suggest a progressive NH$_{3}$ depletion with increasing central density of the core., Comment: 23 pages, 23 figures incl. appendix; A&A accepted

Context. Observations of $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ in the interstellar medium are becoming more frequent thanks to the increased telescope capabilities. However, interpreting these data is still puzzling. In particular, measurements of $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ in diazenylium revealed high levels of anti-fractionation in cold cores. Aims. Furuya & Aikawa (2018), using astrophysical simulations coupled with a gas-grain chemical code, concluded that the $^{15}$N-depletion in prestellar cores could be inherited from the initial stages, when $\rm ^{14}N^{15}N$ is selectively photodissociated and 15N atoms deplete onto the dust grain, forming ammonia ices. We aim to test this hypothesis. Methods. We targeted three sources (the prestellar core L1544, the protostellar envelope IRAS4A, and the shocked region L1157-B1) with distinct degrees of desorption or sputtering of the ammonia ices. We observed the NH3 isotopologues with the GBT, and we inferred the $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ via a spectral fitting of the observed inversion transitions. Results. $^{15}$NH3(1,1) is detected in L1544 and IRAS4A, whilst only upper limits are deduced in L1157-B1. The NH3 isotopic ratio is significantly lower towards the protostar than at the centre of L1544, where it is consistent with the elemental value. We also present the first spatially resolved map of NH3 nitrogen isotopic ratio towards L1544. Conclusions. Our results are in agreement with the hypothesis that ammonia ices are enriched in $^{15}$N, leading to a decrease of the $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ ratio when the ices are sublimated into the gas phase for instance due to the temperature rise in protostellar envelopes. The ammonia $\rm ^{14}N/^{15}N$ value at the centre of L1544 is a factor of 2 lower than that of N2H+, suggesting that the dominant formation pathway is hydrogenation of N atoms on dust grains, followed by non-thermal desorption., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A on 29/05/23

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of the $\sim$10 kAU environment surrounding 21 protostars in the Orion A molecular cloud tracing outflows. Our sample is composed of Class 0 to flat-spectrum protostars, spanning the full $\sim$1 Myr lifetime. We derive the angular distribution of outflow momentum and energy profiles and obtain the first two-dimensional instantaneous mass, momentum, and energy ejection rate maps using our new approach: the Pixel Flux-tracing Technique (PFT). Our results indicate that by the end of the protostellar phase, outflows will remove $\sim$2 to 4 M$_\odot$ from the surrounding $\sim$1 M$_\odot$ low-mass core. These high values indicate that outflows remove a significant amount of gas from their parent cores and continuous core accretion from larger scales is needed to replenish core material for star formation. This poses serious challenges to the concept of ``cores as well-defined mass reservoirs", and hence to the simplified core-to-star conversion prescriptions. Furthermore, we show that cavity opening angles, and momentum and energy distributions all increase with the protostar evolutionary stage. This is clear evidence that even garden-variety protostellar outflows: (a) effectively inject energy and momentum into their environments on $10$ kAU scales, and (b) significantly disrupt their natal cores, ejecting a large fraction of the mass that would have otherwise fed the nascent star. Filamentary structures have been found nearly ubiquitously in molecular clouds and yet their formation and evolution is still poorly understood. We examine a segment of Taurus Molecular Cloud 1 (TMC-1) that appears as a single, narrow filament in continuum emission from dust. We use the Regularized Optimization for Hyper-Spectral Analysis (ROHSA), a Gaussian decomposition algorithm which enforces spatial coherence when fitting multiple velocity components simultaneously over a data cube. We analyze HC$_5$N (9-8) line emission as part of the Green Bank Ammonia Survey (GAS) and identify three velocity-coherent components with ROHSA. The two brightest components extend the length of the filament, while the third component is fainter and clumpier. The brightest component has a prominent transverse velocity gradient of $2.7 \pm 0.1$ km s$^{-1}$ pc$^{-1}$ that we show to be indicative of gravitationally induced inflow. In the second component, we identify regularly spaced emission peaks along its length. We show that the local minima between pairs of adjacent HC$_5$N peaks line up closely with submillimetre continuum emission peaks, which we argue is evidence for fragmentation along the spine of TMC-1. While coherent velocity components have been described as separate physical structures in other star-forming filaments, we argue that the two bright components identified in HC$_5$N emission in TMC-1 are tracing two layers in one filament: a lower density outer layer whose material is flowing under gravity towards the higher density inner layer of the filament., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures; Accepted for publication to MNRAS

High-resolution observations of the Perseus B5 "core" have previously revealed that this subsonic region actually consists of several filaments that are likely in the process of forming a quadruple stellar system. Since subsonic filaments are thought to be produced at the $\sim 0.1$ pc sonic scale by turbulent compression, a detailed kinematic study is crucial to test such a scenario in the context of core and star formation. Here we present a detailed kinematic follow-up study of the B5 filaments at a 0.009 pc resolution using the VLA and GBT combined observations fitted with multi-component spectral models. Using precisely identified filament spines, we find a remarkable resemblance between the averaged width profiles of each filament and Plummer-like functions, with filaments possessing FWHM widths of $\sim 0.03$ pc. The velocity dispersion profiles of the filaments also show decreasing trends towards the filament spines. Moreover, the velocity gradient field in B5 appears to be locally well ordered ($\sim 0.04$ pc) but globally complex, with kinematic behaviors suggestive of inhomogeneous turbulent accretion onto filaments and longitudinal flows towards a local overdensity along one of the filaments., Comment: 27 pages, 12 figures, published in The Astrophysical Journal

To understand the origin of the diversity observed in exoplanetary systems, it is crucial to characterize the early stages of their formation, represented by Solar-type protostars. Likely, the gaseous chemical content of these objects directly depends on the composition of the dust grain mantles formed before the collapse. Directly retrieving the ice mantle composition is challenging, but it can be done indirectly by observing the major components, such as NH3 and CH3OH at cm wavelengths, once they are released into the gas-phase during the warm protostellar stage. We observed several CH3OH and NH3 lines toward three Class 0 protostars in NGC1333 (IRAS 4A1, IRAS 4A2, and IRAS 4B), at high angular resolution (1"; ~300 au) with the VLA interferometer at 24-26 GHz. Using a non-LTE LVG analysis, we derived a similar NH3/CH3OH abundance ratio in the three protostars (<0.5, 0.015-0.5, and 0.003-0.3 for IRAS 4A1, 4A2, and 4B, respectively). Hence, we infer they were born from pre-collapse material with similar physical conditions. Comparing the observed abundance ratios with astrochemical model predictions, we constrained the dust temperature at the time of the mantle formation to be ~17 K, which coincides with the average temperature of the southern NGC 1333 diffuse cloud. We suggest that a brutal event started the collapse that eventually formed IRAS 4A1, 4A2 and 4B, which,therefore, did not experience the usual pre-stellar core phase. pyspeckit is a toolkit and library for spectroscopic analysis in Python. We describe the pyspeckit package and highlight some of its capabilities, such as interactively fitting a model to data, akin to the historically widely-used splot function in IRAF. pyspeckit employs the Levenberg-Marquardt optimization method via the mpfit and lmfit implementations, and important assumptions regarding error estimation are described here. Wrappers to use pymc and emcee as optimizers are provided. A parallelized wrapper to fit lines in spectral cubes is included. The study of the development of structures on multiple scales in the cold interstellar medium has experienced rapid expansion in the past decade, on both the observational and the theoretical front. Spectral line studies at (sub-)millimeter wavelengths over a wide range of physical scales have provided unique probes of the kinematics of dense gas in star-forming regions, and have been complemented by extensive, high dynamic range dust continuum surveys of the column density structure of molecular cloud complexes, while dust polarization maps have highlighted the role of magnetic fields. This has been accompanied by increasingly sophisticated numerical simulations including new physics (e.g., supernova driving, cosmic rays, non-ideal magneto-hydrodynamics, radiation pressure) and new techniques such as zoom-in simulations allowing multi-scale studies. Taken together, these new data have emphasized the anisotropic growth of dense structures on all scales, from giant ISM bubbles driven by stellar feedback on $\sim$50-100 pc scales through parsec-scale molecular filaments down to $<$0.1 pc dense cores and $<$1000 au protostellar disks. Combining observations and theory, we present a coherent picture for the formation and evolution of these structures and synthesize a comprehensive physical scenario for the initial conditions and early stages of star and disk formation., Comment: 42 pages, 20 figures. Spectral lines of ammonia, NH$_3$, are useful probes of the physical conditions in dense molecular cloud cores. In addition to advantages in spectroscopy, ammonia has also been suggested to be resistant to freezing onto grain surfaces, which should make it a superior tool for studying the interior parts of cold, dense cores. Here we present high-resolution NH$_3$ observations with the Very Large Array (VLA) and Green Bank Telescope (GBT) towards a prestellar core. These observations show an outer region with a fractional NH$_3$ abundance of X(NH$_3$) = (1.975$\pm$0.005)$\times 10^{-8}$ ($\pm 10\%$ systematic), but it also reveals that after all, the X(NH$_3$) starts to decrease above a H$_2$ column density of $\approx 2.6 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. We derive a density model for the core and find that the break-point in the fractional abundance occurs at the density n(H$_2$) $\sim 2\times10^5$ cm$^{-3}$, and beyond this point the fractional abundance decreases with increasing density, following the power law $n^{-1.1}$. This power-law behavior is well reproduced by chemical models where adsorption onto grains dominates the removal of ammonia and related species from the gas at high densities. We suggest that the break-point density changes from core to core depending on the temperature and the grain properties, but that the depletion power law is anyway likely to be close to $n^{-1}$ owing to the dominance of accretion in the central parts of starless cores., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ. 18 Pages, 16 Figures, 3 Tables

Pre-stellar cores represent the initial conditions in the process of star and planet formation. Their low temperatures ($<$10 K) allow the formation of thick icy dust mantles, which will be partially preserved in the future protoplanetary disks, ultimately affecting the chemical composition of planetary systems. Previous observations have shown that carbon- and oxygen-bearing species, in particular CO, are heavily depleted in pre-stellar cores due to the efficient molecular freeze-out onto the surface of cold dust grains. However, N-bearing species such as NH$_3$ and, in particular, its deuterated isotopologues, appear to maintain high abundances where CO molecules are mainly in solid phase. Thanks to ALMA, we present here the first clear observational evidence of NH$_2$D freeze-out toward the L1544 pre-stellar core, suggestive of the presence of a"complete-depletion zone" within a $\simeq$1800 au radius, in agreement with astrochemical pre-stellar core model predictions. Our state-of-the-art chemical model coupled with a non-LTE radiative transfer code demonstrates that NH$_2$D becomes mainly incorporated in icy mantles in the central 2000 au and starts freezing-out already at $\simeq$7000 au. Radiative transfer effects within the pre-stellar core cause the NH$_2$D(1$_{11}$-1$_{01}$) emission to appear centrally concentrated, with a flattened distribution within the central $\simeq$3000 au, unlike the 1.3 mm dust continuum emission which shows a clear peak within the central $\simeq$1800 au. There is evidence that the star formation process is linked to the intricate net of filaments in molecular clouds, which may be also due to gas compression from external triggers. We studied the southern region of the Perseus NGC 1333 molecular cloud, known to be heavily shaped by similar external triggers, to shed light on the process that perturbed the filament where the Class 0 IRAS4 protostars lie. We use new IRAM-NOEMA observations of SiO and CH3OH, both known to trace violent events as shocks, toward IRAS 4A as part of the Large Program Seeds Of Life in Space (SOLIS). We detected three parallel elongated ($>$6000 au) structures, called fingers, with narrow line profiles (~1.5 $km s^{-1}$) peaked at the cloud systemic velocity, tracing gas with high density (5-20 $10^5 cm^{-3}$) and high temperature (80-160 K). They are chemically different, with the northern finger traced by both SiO and CH3OH ([CH3OH]/[SiO]~160-300), while the other two only by SiO ([CH3OH]/[SiO]$<$ 40). Among various possibilities, a train of three shocks, distanced by $>$5000 yr, would be consistent with the observations if a substantial fraction of silicon, frozen onto the grain mantles, is released by the shocks.We suggest that the shock train is due to an expanding gas bubble, coming behind NGC 1333 from the southwest and clashing against the filament, where IRAS 4A lies. We use 3mm continuum NOEMA and NH$_3$ VLA observations towards the First Hydrostatic Core (FHSC) candidate CB 17 MMS to reveal the dust structure and gas properties down to 600-1,100 au scales and constrain its evolutionary stage. We do not detect any compact source at the previously identified 1.3 mm point source, despite expecting a minimum signal-to-noise of 9. The gas traced by NH$_3$ exhibits subsonic motions, with an average temperature of 10.4 K. A fit of the radial column density profile derived from the ammonia emission finds a flat inner region of radius $\sim$1,800 au and a central density of $\sim$6$\times10^5$ cm$^{-3}$. Virial and density structure analysis reveals the core is marginally bound ($\alpha_{vir}$= 0.73). The region is entirely consistent with a young starless core, hence ruling out CB 17 MMS as a FHSC candidate. Additionally, the core exhibits a velocity gradient aligned with the major axis, showing an arc-like structure in the p-v diagram and an off-center region with high-velocity dispersion caused by two distinct velocity peaks. These features could be due to interaction with the nearby outflow, which appears to deflect due to the dense gas near the NH$_3$ column density peak. We investigate the specific angular momentum profile of the starless core, finding that it aligns closely with previous studies of such radial profiles in Class 0 sources. This similarity to more evolved objects suggests that motions at 1,000 au scales are determined by large-scale dense cloud motions and may be preserved through the early stages of star formation.

Dynamical studies of dense structures within molecular clouds often conclude that the most massive clumps contain too little kinetic energy for virial equilibrium, unless they are magnetized to an unexpected degree. This raises questions about how such a state might arise, and how it might persist long enough to represent the population of massive clumps. In an effort to re-examine the origins of this conclusion, we use ammonia line data from the Green Bank Ammonia Survey and Planck-calibrated dust emission data from Herschel to estimate the masses and kinetic and gravitational energies for dense clumps in the Gould Belt clouds. We show that several types of systematic error can enhance the appearance of low kinetic-to-gravitational energy ratios: insufficient removal of foreground and background material; ignoring the kinetic energy associated with velocity differences across a resolved cloud; and over-correcting for stratification when evaluating the gravitational energy. Using an analysis designed to avoid these errors, we find that the most massive Gould Belt clumps harbor virial motions, rather than sub-virial ones. Dense cores are the final place where turbulence is dissipated. It has been proposed from theoretical arguments that the non-thermal velocity dispersion should be narrower both for molecular ions (compared to neutrals) and for transitions with higher critical densities. To test these hypotheses, we compare the velocity dispersion of N$_2$H$^+$ (1--0) (n$_{\rm crit}$ = $6\times10^4$ cm$^{-3}) and NH$_3$ (n$_{\rm crit}=2\times10^3$ cm$^{-3}), in the dense core Barnard 5. We analyse well resolved and high signal-to-noise observations of NH$_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) obtained with combining GBT and VLA data, and N$_2$H$^+$ (1--0) obtained with GBT Argus, which present a similar morphology. % Surprisingly, the non-thermal velocity dispersion of the ion is systematically higher than that of the neutral by 20\%. The derived sonic Mach number, $\mathcal{M}_s = \sigma_{\rm NT}/c_s$, has peak values $\mathcal{M}_{s, {\rm N_2H^+}} = 0.59$ and $\mathcal{M}_{s, {\rm NH}_3} = 0.48$ for N$_2$H$^+$ and NH$_3$, respectively. % This observed difference may indicate that the magnetic field even deep within the dense core is still oscillating, as it is in the turbulent region outside the core. The ions should be more strongly dynamically coupled to this oscillating field than the neutrals, thus accounting for their broader linewidth. Applying dendrogram analysis to the CARMA-NRO C$^{18}$O ($J$=1--0) data having an angular resolution of $\sim$ 8", we identified 692 dense cores in the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) region. Using this core sample, we compare the core and initial stellar mass functions in the same area to quantify the step from cores to stars. About 22 \% of the identified cores are gravitationally bound. The derived core mass function (CMF) for starless cores has a slope similar to Salpeter's stellar initial mass function (IMF) for the mass range above 1 $M_\odot$, consistent with previous studies. Our CMF has a peak at a subsolar mass of $\sim$ 0.1 $M_\odot$, which is comparable to the peak mass of the IMF derived in the same area. We also find that the current star formation rate is consistent with the picture in which stars are born only from self-gravitating starless cores. However, the cores must gain additional gas from the surroundings to reproduce the current IMF (e.g., its slope and peak mass), because the core mass cannot be accreted onto the star with a 100\% efficiency. Stars form in cold dense cores showing subsonic velocity dispersions. The parental molecular clouds display higher temperatures and supersonic velocity dispersions. The transition from core to cloud has been observed in velocity dispersion, but temperature and abundance variations are unknown. We aim to study the transition from cores to ambient cloud in temperature and velocity dispersion using a single tracer. We use NH3 (1,1) and (2,2) maps in L1688 from the Green Bank Ammonia Survey, smoothed to 1', and determine the physical properties from fits. We identify the coherent cores and study the changes in temperature and velocity dispersion from cores to the surrounding cloud. We obtain a kinetic temperature map tracing the extended cloud, improving from previous maps tracing mostly the cores. The cloud is 4-6 K warmer than the cores, and shows a larger velocity dispersion (diff. = 0.15-0.25 km/s). Comparing to Herschel-based measurements, we find that cores show kinetic temperature $\approx$1.8 K lower than the dust temperature; while the gas temperature is higher than the dust temperature in the cloud. We find an average p-NH3 fractional abundance (with respect to H2) of $(4.2\pm0.2) \times 10^{-9}$ towards the coherent cores, and $(1.4\pm0.1) \times 10^{-9}$ outside the core boundaries. Using stacked spectra, we detect two components, one narrow and one broad, towards cores and their neighbourhoods. We find the turbulence in the narrow component to be correlated to the size of the structure (Pearson-r=0.54). With these unresolved regional measurements, we obtain a turbulence-size relation of ${\sigma}_{v,NT}\propto r^{0.5}$, similar to previous findings using multiple tracers. We discover that the subsonic component extends up to 0.15 pc beyond the typical coherent boundaries, unveiling larger extents of the coherent cores and showing gradual transition to coherence over ~0.2 pc., Comment: 37 pages, 33 figures, 1 table. We characterize in detail the two ~0.3 pc long filamentary structures found within the subsonic region of Barnard 5. We use combined GBT and VLA observations of the molecular lines NH$_3$(1,1) and (2,2) at a resolution of 1800 au, as well as JCMT continuum observations at 850 and 450 $\mu$m at a resolution of 4400 au and 3000 au, respectively. We find that both filaments are highly super-critical with a mean mass per unit length, $M/L$, of ~80 M$_\odot$ pc$^{-1}$, after background subtraction, with local increases reaching values of ~150 M$_\odot$ pc$^{-1}$. This would require a magnetic field strength of ~500 $\mu$G to be stable against radial collapse. We extract equidistant cuts perpendicular to the spine of the filament and fit a modified Plummer profile as well as a Gaussian to each of the cuts. The filament widths (deconvolved FWHM) range between 6500-7000 au (~0.03 pc) along the filaments. This equals ~2.0 times the radius of the flat inner region. We find an anti-correlation between the central density and this flattening radius, suggestive of contraction. Further, we also find a strong correlation between the power-law exponent at large radii and the flattening radius. We note that the measurements of these three parameters fall in a plane and derive their empirical relation. Annular structures, or rings and gaps, in disks around pre-main sequence stars have been detected in abundance towards Class II objects ~1,000,000 years in age. These structures are often interpreted as evidence of planet formation, with planet-mass bodies carving rings and gaps in the disk. This implies that planet formation may already be underway in even younger disks in the Class I phase, when the protostar is still embedded in a larger scale dense envelope of gas and dust. While younger disks likely play an important role in the onset of planet formation, only within the past decade have detailed properties of disks in the youngest star-forming phases begun to be observed. Here we present 1.3 mm dust emission observations with 5 au resolution that show four annular substructures in the disk of the young (<500,000 years) protostar IRS 63. IRS 63, a single Class I source located in the nearby Ophiuchus molecular cloud (at a distance of 144 pc), is one of the brightest Class I protostars at (sub)millimeter wavelengths that also has a relatively large disk (>50 au). Multiple annular substructures observed towards disks at young times can act as an early foothold for dust grain growth, a prerequisite of planet formation. We present ALMA 3 mm molecular line and continuum observations with a resolution of ~3.5" towards five first hydrostatic core (FHSC) candidates (L1451-mm, Per-bolo 58, Per-bolo 45, L1448-IRS2E and Cha-MMS1). Our goal is to characterize their envelopes and identify the most promising sources that could be bona fide FHSCs. We identify two candidates which are consistent with an extremely young evolutionary state (L1451-mm and Cha-MMS1), with L1451-mm being the most promising FHSC candidate. Although our envelope observations cannot rule out Cha-MMS1 as a FHSC yet, the properties of its CO outflow and SED published in recent studies are in better agreement with the predictions for a young protostar. For the remaining three sources, our observations favor a prestellar nature for Per-bolo 45 and rule out the rest as FHSC candidates. Per-bolo 58 is fully consistent with being a Class 0, while L1448 IRS2E shows no emission of high-density tracers (NH2D and N2H+) at the location of the previously identified compact continuum source, which is also undetected in our observations. Thus we argue that there is no embedded source at the presumptive location of the FHSC candidate L1448 IRS2E. We propose instead, that what was thought to be emission from the presumed L1448 IRS2E outflow corresponds to outflow emission from a nearby Class 0 system, deflected by the dense ambient material. We compare the properties of the FHSC candidates studied in this work and the literature, which shows that L1451-mm appears as possibly the youngest source with a confirmed outflow., Comment: 26 pages, 14 figures. Binary formation is an important aspect of star formation. One possible route for close-in binary formation is disk fragmentation$^{[1,2,3]}$. Recent observations show small scale asymmetries (<300 au) around young protostars$^{[2,4]}$, although not always resolving the circumbinary disk, are linked to disk phenomena$^{[5,6]}$. In later stages, resolved circumbinary disk observations$^{[7]}$ (<200 au) show similar asymmetries, suggesting the origin of the asymmetries arises from binary-disk interactions$^{[8,9,10]}$. We observed one of the youngest systems to study the connection between disk and dense core. We find for the first time a bright and clear streamer in chemically fresh material (Carbon-chain species) that originates from outside the dense core (>10,500 au). This material connects the outer dense core with the region where asymmetries arise near disk scales. This new structure type, 10x larger than those seen near disk scales, suggests a different interpretation of previous observations: large-scale accretion flows funnel material down to disk scales. Context : Star formation takes place in cold dense cores in molecular clouds. Earlier observations have found that dense cores exhibit subsonic non-thermal velocity dispersions. In contrast, CO observations show that the ambient large-scale cloud is warmer and has supersonic velocity dispersions. Aims : We aim to study the ammonia ($\rm NH_3$) molecular line profiles with exquisite sensitivity towards the coherent cores in L1688 in order to study their kinematical properties in unprecedented detail. Methods : We used $\rm NH_3$ (1,1) and (2,2) data from the first data release (DR1) in the Green Bank Ammonia Survey (GAS). We first smoothed the data to a larger beam of 1' to obtain substantially more extended maps of velocity dispersion and kinetic temperature, compared to the DR1 maps. We then identified the coherent cores in the cloud and analysed the averaged line profiles towards the cores. Results : For the first time, we detected a faint (mean $\rm NH_3$(1,1) peak brightness $<$0.25 K in $T_{MB}$), supersonic component towards all the coherent cores in L1688. We fitted two components, one broad and one narrow, and derived the kinetic temperature and velocity dispersion of each component. The broad components towards all cores have supersonic linewidths ($\mathcal{M}_S \ge 1$). This component biases the estimate of the narrow dense core component's velocity dispersion by $\approx$28% and the kinetic temperature by $\approx$10%, on average, as compared to the results from single-component fits. Conclusions : Neglecting this ubiquitous presence of a broad component towards all coherent cores causes the typical single-component fit to overestimate the temperature and velocity dispersion. We study the formation, evolution and collapse of dense cores by tracking structures in a magnetohydrodynamic simulation of a star-forming cloud. We identify cores using the dendrogram algorithm and utilize machine learning techniques, including Neural Gas prototype learning and Fuzzy $c$-means clustering, to analyze the density and velocity dispersion profiles of cores together with six bulk properties. We produce a 2-d visualization using a Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection (UMAP), which facilitates the connection between physical properties and three partially-overlapping phases: i) unbound turbulent structures (Phase I), ii) coherent cores that have low turbulence (Phase II), and iii) bound cores, many of which become protostellar (Phase III). Within Phase II we identify a population of long-lived coherent cores that reach a quasi-equilibrium state. Most prestellar cores form in Phase II and become protostellar after evolving into Phase III. Due to the turbulent cloud environment, the initial core properties do not uniquely predict the eventual evolution, i.e., core evolution is stochastic, and cores follow no one evolutionary path. The phase lifetimes are 1.0$\pm$0.1$\times$10$^5$ yr, 1.3$\pm$0.2$\times$10$^5$ yr, and 1.8$\pm$0.3$\times$10$^5$ yr for Phase I, II, and III, respectively. We compare our results to NH$_3$ observations of dense cores. Known coherent cores predominantly map into Phase II, while most turbulent pressure-confined cores map to Phase I or III. We predict that a significant fraction of observed starless cores have unresolved coherent regions and that $\gtrsim 20$% of observed starless cores will not form stars. After almost 20 years of hunting, only about a dozen hot corinos, hot regions enriched in interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs), are known. Of them, many are binary systems with the two components showing drastically different molecular spectra. Two obvious questions arise. Why are hot corinos so difficult to find and why do their binary components seem chemically different? The answer to both questions could be a high dust opacity that would hide the molecular lines. To test this hypothesis, we observed methanol lines at centimeter wavelengths, where dust opacity is negligible, using the Very Large Array interferometer. We targeted the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A binary system, for which one of the two components, 4A1, has a spectrum deprived of iCOMs lines when observed at millimeter wavelengths, while the other component, 4A2, is very rich in iCOMs. We found that centimeter methanol lines are similarly bright toward 4A1 and 4A2. Their non-LTE analysis indicates gas density and temperature ($\geq2\times10^6$ cm$^{-3}$ and 100--190 K), methanol column density ($\sim10^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$) and extent ($\sim$35 au in radius) similar in 4A1 and 4A2, proving that both are hot corinos. Furthermore, the comparison with previous methanol line millimeter observations allows us to estimate the optical depth of the dust in front of 4A1 and 4A2, respectively. The obtained values explain the absence of iCOMs line emission toward 4A1 at millimeter wavelengths and indicate that the abundances toward 4A2 are underestimated by $\sim$30\%. We present 3 mm ALMA continuum and line observations at resolutions of 6.5 au and 13 au respectively, toward the Class 0 system IRAS 16293-2422 A. The continuum observations reveal two compact sources towards IRAS 16293-2422 A, coinciding with compact ionized gas emission previously observed at radio wavelengths (A1 and A2), confirming the long-known radio sources as protostellar. The emission towards A2 is resolved and traces a dust disk with a FWHM size of ~12 au, while the emission towards A1 sets a limit to the FWHM size of the dust disk of ~4 au. We also detect spatially resolved molecular kinematic tracers near the protostellar disks. Several lines of the J=5-4 rotational transition of HNCO, NH2CHO and t-HCOOH are detected, with which we derived individual line-of-sight velocities. Using these together with the CS (J=2-1), we fit Keplerian profiles towards the individual compact sources and derive masses of the central protostars. The kinematic analysis indicates that A1 and A2 are a bound binary system. Using this new context for the previous 30 years of VLA observations, we fit orbital parameters to the relative motion between A1 and A2 and find the combined protostellar mass derived from the orbit is consistent with the masses derived from the gas kinematics. The role played by magnetic field during star formation is an important topic in astrophysics. We investigate the correlation between the orientation of star-forming cores (as defined by the core major axes) and ambient magnetic field directions in 1) a 3D MHD simulation, 2) synthetic observations generated from the simulation at different viewing angles, and 3) observations of nearby molecular clouds. We find that the results on relative alignment between cores and background magnetic field in synthetic observations slightly disagree with those measured in fully 3D simulation data, which is partly because cores identified in projected 2D maps tend to coexist within filamentary structures, while 3D cores are generally more rounded. In addition, we examine the progression of magnetic field from pc- to core-scale in the simulation, which is consistent with the anisotropic core formation model that gas preferably flow along the magnetic field toward dense cores. When comparing the observed cores identified from the GBT Ammonia Survey (GAS) and Planck polarization-inferred magnetic field orientations, we find that the relative core-field alignment has a regional dependence among different clouds. More specifically, we find that dense cores in the Taurus molecular cloud tend to align perpendicular to the background magnetic field, while those in Perseus and Ophiuchus tend to have random (Perseus) or slightly parallel (Ophiuchus) orientations with respect to the field. Resolved kinematical information, such as from molecular gas in star forming regions, is obtained from spectral line observations. However, these observations often contain multiple line-of-sight components, making estimates harder to obtain and interpret. We present a fully automatic method that determines the number of components along the line of sight, or the spectral multiplicity, through Bayesian model selection. The underlying open-source framework, based on nested sampling and conventional spectral line modeling, is tested using the large area ammonia maps of NGC 1333 in Perseus molecular cloud obtained by the Green Bank Ammonia Survey (GAS). Compared to classic approaches, the presented method constrains velocities and velocity dispersions in a larger area. In addition, we find that the velocity dispersion distribution among multiple components did not change substantially from that of a single fit component analysis of the GAS data. Recent observations of global velocity gradients across and along molecular filaments have been interpreted as signs of gas accreting onto and along these filaments, potentially feeding star-forming cores and proto-clusters. The behavior of velocity gradients in filaments, however, has not been studied in detail, particularly on small scales (< 0.1 pc). In this paper, we present MUFASA, an efficient, robust, and automatic method to fit ammonia lines with multiple velocity components, generalizable to other molecular species. We also present CRISPy, a Python package to identify filament spines in 3D images (e.g., position-position-velocity cubes), along with a complementary technique to sort fitted velocity components into velocity-coherent filaments. In NGC 1333, we find a wealth of velocity gradient structures on a beam-resolved scale of ~0.05 pc. Interestingly, these local velocity gradients are not randomly oriented with respect to filament spines and their perpendicular, i.e., radial, component decreases in magnitude towards the spine for many filaments. Together with remarkably constant velocity gradients on larger scales along many filaments, these results suggest a scenario in which gas falling onto filaments is progressively damped and redirected to flow along these filaments., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Context. Low-mass protostars drive powerful molecular outflows that can be observed with mm and sub-mm telescopes. Various sulfuretted species are known to be bright in shocks and could be used to infer the physical and chemical conditions throughout the observed outflows. Aims. The evolution of sulfur chemistry is studied along the outflows driven by the NGC1333-IRAS4A protobinary system located in the Perseus cloud to constrain the physical and chemical processes at work in shocks. Methods. We observed various transitions from OCS, CS, SO, and SO$_2$ towards NGC1333-IRAS4A in the 1.3, 2, and 3mm bands using the IRAM NOEMA array and we interpreted the observations through the use of the Paris-Durham shock model. Results. The targeted species clearly show different spatial emission along the two outflows driven by IRAS4A. OCS is brighter on small and large scales along the south outflow driven by IRAS4A1, whereas SO$_2$ is detected rather along the outflow driven by IRAS4A2 that is extended along the north east - south west (NE-SW) direction. Column density ratio maps estimated from a rotational diagram analysis allowed us to confirm a clear gradient of the OCS/SO$_2$ column density ratio between the IRAS4A1 and IRAS4A2 outflows. SO is detected at extremely high radial velocity up to 25 km/s relative to the source velocity, clearly allowing us to distinguish the two outflows on small scales. Conclusions. The observed chemical differentiation between the two outflows of the IRAS4A system could be explained by a different chemical history. The outflow driven by IRAS4A1 is likely younger and more enriched in species initially formed in interstellar ices, such as OCS, and recently sputtered into the shock gas. We present and release the full dataset for the Mass Assembly of Stellar Systems and their Evolution with the SMA (MASSES) survey. This survey used the Submillimeter Array (SMA) to image the 74 known protostars within the Perseus molecular cloud. The SMA was used in two array configurations to capture outflows for scales $>$30$^{\prime\prime}$ ($>$9000 au) and to probe scales down to $\sim$1$^{\prime\prime}$ ($\sim$300 au). The protostars were observed with the 1.3 mm and 850 $\mu$m receivers simultaneously to detect continuum at both wavelengths and molecular line emission from CO(2-1), $^{13}$CO(2-1), C$^{18}$O(2-1), N$_2$D$^+$(3-2), CO(3-2), HCO$^+$(4-3), and H$^{13}$CO$^+$(4-3). Some of the observations also used the SMA's recently upgraded correlator, SWARM, whose broader bandwidth allowed for several more spectral lines to be observed (e.g., SO, H$_2$CO, DCO$^+$, DCN, CS, CN). Of the main continuum and spectral tracers observed, 84% of the images and cubes had emission detected. The median C$^{18}$O(2-1) linewidth is $\sim$1.0 km s$^{-1}$, which is slightly higher than those measured with single-dish telescopes at scales of 3000-20000 au. Of the 74 targets, six are suggested to be first hydrostatic core candidates, and we suggest that L1451-mm is the best candidate. We question a previous continuum detection toward L1448 IRS2E. In the SVS13 system, SVS13A certainly appears to be the most evolved source, while SVS13C appears to be hotter and more evolved than SVS13B. The MASSES survey is the largest publicly available interferometric continuum and spectral line protostellar survey to date, and is largely unbiased as it only targets protostars in Perseus. We present the first results of high-spectral resolution (0.023 km/s) N$_2$H$^+$ observations of dense gas dynamics at core scales (~0.01 pc) using the recently commissioned Argus instrument on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). While the fitted linear velocity gradients across the cores measured in our targets nicely agree with the well-known power-law correlation between the specific angular momentum and core size, it is unclear if the observed gradients represent core-scale rotation. In addition, our Argus data reveal detailed and intriguing gas structures in position-velocity (PV) space for all 5 targets studied in this project, which could suggest that the velocity gradients previously observed in many dense cores actually originate from large-scale turbulence or convergent flow compression instead of rigid-body rotation. We also note that there are targets in this study with their star-forming disks nearly perpendicular to the local velocity gradients, which, assuming the velocity gradient represents the direction of rotation, is opposite to what is described by the classical theory of star formation. We have investigated the formation and kinematics of sub-mm continuum cores in the Orion A molecular cloud. A comparison between sub-mm continuum and near infrared extinction shows a continuum core detection threshold of $A_V\sim$ 5-10 mag. The threshold is similar to the star formation extinction threshold of $A_V\sim$ 7 mag proposed by recent work, suggesting a universal star formation extinction threshold among clouds within 500 pc to the Sun. A comparison between the Orion A cloud and a massive infrared dark cloud G28.37+0.07 indicates that Orion A produces more dense gas within the extinction range 15 mag $\lesssim A_V \lesssim$ 60 mag. Using data from the CARMA-NRO Orion Survey, we find that dense cores in the integral-shaped filament (ISF) show sub-sonic core-to-envelope velocity dispersion that is significantly less than the local envelope line dispersion, similar to what has been found in nearby clouds. Dynamical analysis indicates that the cores are bound to the ISF. An oscillatory core-to-envelope motion is detected along the ISF. We present an analysis of the internal velocity structures of the newly identified sub-0.1 pc coherent structures, droplets, in L1688 and B18. By fitting 2D linear velocity fields to the observed maps of velocity centroids, we determine the magnitudes of linear velocity gradients and examine the potential rotational motions that could lead to the observed velocity gradients. The results show that the droplets follow the same power-law relation between the velocity gradient and size found for larger-scale dense cores. Assuming that rotational motion giving rise to the observed velocity gradient in each core is a solid-body rotation of a rotating body with a uniform density, we derive the "net rotational motions" of the droplets. We find a ratio between rotational and gravitational energies, $\beta$, of $\sim 0.046$ for the droplets, and when including both droplets and larger-scale dense cores, we find $\beta \sim 0.039$. We then examine the alignment between the velocity gradient and the major axis of each droplet, using methods adapted from the histogram of relative orientations (HRO) introduced by Soler et al. (2013). We find no definitive correlation between the directions of velocity gradients and the elongations of the cores. The determination of the specific angular momentum radial profile, $j(r)$, in the early stages of star formation is crucial to constrain star and circumstellar disk formation theories. The specific angular momentum is directly related to the largest Keplerian disk possible, and it could constrain the angular momentum removal mechanism. We determine $j(r)$ towards two Class 0 objects and a first hydrostatic core candidate in the Perseus cloud, which is consistent across all three sources and well fit with a single power-law relation between 800 and 10,000\,au: $j_{fit}(r)=10^{-3.60\pm0.15}\left(r/\textrm{1,000au}\right)^{1.80\pm0.04}$ km s$^{-1}$ pc. This power-law relation is in between solid body rotation ($\propto r^2$) and pure turbulence ($\propto r^{1.5}$). This strongly suggests that even at 1,000\,au, the influence of the dense core's initial level of turbulence or the connection between core and the molecular cloud is still present. The specific angular momentum at 10,000\,au is $\approx3\times$ higher than previously estimated, while at 1,000\,au it is lower by $2\times$. We do not find a region of conserved specific angular momentum, although it could still be present at a smaller radius. We estimate an upper limit to the largest Keplerian disk radius of 60\,au, which is small but consistent with published upper limits. Finally, these results suggest that more realistic initial conditions for numerical simulations of disk formation are needed. Some possible solutions include: a) use a larger simulation box to include some level of driven turbulence or connection to the parental cloud, or b) incorporate the observed $j(r)$ to setup the dense core kinematics initial conditions., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 13 pages, 7 figures

We present ALMA maps of the starless molecular cloud core Ophiuchus/H-MM1 in the lines of deuterated ammonia (ortho-NH2D), methanol (CH3OH), and sulphur monoxide (SO). The dense core is seen in NH2D emission, whereas the CH3OH and SO distributions form a halo surrounding the core. Because methanol is formed on grain surfaces, its emission highlights regions where desorption from grains is particularly efficient. Methanol and sulphur monoxide are most abundant in a narrow zone that follows the eastern side of the core. This side is sheltered from the stronger external radiation field coming from the west. We show that photodissociation on the illuminated side can give rise to an asymmetric methanol distribution, but that the stark contrast observed in H-MM1 is hard to explain without assuming enhanced desorption on the shaded side. The region of the brightest emission has a wavy structure that rolls up at one end. This is the signature of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability occurring in sheared flows. We suggest that in this zone, methanol and sulphur are released as a result of grain-grain collisions induced by shear vorticity., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We perform a virial analysis of starless dense cores in three nearby star-forming regions : L1688 in Ophiuchus, NGC 1333 in Perseus, and B18 in Taurus. Our analysis takes advantage of comprehensive kinematic information for the dense gas in all of these regions made publicly available through the Green Bank Ammonia Survey Data Release 1, which used to estimate internal support against collapse. We combine this information with ancillary data used to estimate other important properties of the cores, including continuum data from the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope Gould Belt Survey for core identification, core masses, and core sizes. Additionally, we used \textit{Planck} and \textit{Herschel}-based column density maps for external cloud weight pressure, and Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory $^{13}$CO observations for external turbulent pressure. Our self-consistent analysis suggests that many dense cores in all three star-forming regions are not bound by gravity alone, but rather require additional pressure confinement to remain bound. Unlike a recent, similar study in Orion~A, we find that turbulent pressure represents a significant portion of the external pressure budget. Our broad conclusion emphasizing the importance of pressure confinement in dense core evolution, however, agrees with earlier work., Comment: 35 pages, 8 tables, and 14 figures consisting of 16 .pdf files. Stars like our Sun form in self-gravitating dense and cold structures within interstellar clouds, called pre-stellar cores. Although much is known about the physical structure of dense clouds just before and soon after the switch-on of a protostar, the central few thousand astronomical units (au) of pre-stellar cores are unexplored. It is within these central regions that stellar systems assemble and fragmentation may take place, with the consequent formation of binaries and multiple systems. We present ALMA Band 6 observations (ACA and 12m array) of the dust continuum emission of the 8 Msun pre-stellar core L1544, with angular resolution of 2'' x 1.6'' (linear resolution 270 au x 216 au). Within the primary beam, a compact region of 0.1 Msun, which we call a "kernel", has been unveiled. The kernel is elongated, with a central flat zone with radius Rker ~ 10'' (~ 1400 au). The average number density within Rker is ~1 x 10^6 cm^{-3}, with possible local density enhancements. The region within Rker appears to have fragmented, but detailed analysis shows that similar substructure can be reproduced by synthetic interferometric observations of a smooth centrally concentrated dense core with a similar central flat zone. The presence of a smooth kernel within a dense core is in agreement with non-ideal magneto-hydro-dynamical simulations of a contracting cloud core with a peak number density of 1 x 10^7 cm^{-3}. Dense cores with lower central densities are completely filtered out when simulated 12m-array observations are carried out. These observations demonstrate that the kernel of dynamically evolved dense cores can be investigated at high angular resolution with ALMA., Comment: accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal
