Introduction: Age-based stereotype threat (ABST), the concern of being judged according to a negative age stereotype may lead to underperformance in the stereotype domain. The present study aims to replicate the negative effect of ABST on episodic memory. Importantly, we further examine openness to experience as a potential buffer of the ABST effect as well as the role that different memory strategies may play in episodic memory performance., Method: Seventy-five older adults were randomly assigned to the ABST condition or the control condition before taking a word-stem cued recall memory task. They learned word-lists with either a repetition strategy, low resource demanding but less efficient, or a mental imagery strategy, high resource demanding but more efficient. Openness was measured with the Big-5 personality questionnaire., Results: ABST reduced memory performance and disrupted more the recall of words learned with the imagery strategy. The results also showed that openness predicted recall performance associated with the imagery strategy only in the threatened group., Conclusion: These results indicated that a high level in openness may disrupt the negative effect of ABST by improving the capacity of threatened people to execute efficient, resource demanding memory strategies. Coupling plant growth model with pests and diseases (P&D) models, with consideration for the long-term feedback that occurs after the interaction, is still a challenging task nowadays. While a number of studies have examined various methodologies, none of them provides a generic frame able to host existing models and their codes without updating deeply their architecture. We developed MIMIC (Mediation Interface for Model Inner Coupling), an open-access framework/tool for this objective. MIMIC allows to couple plant growth and P&D models in a variety of ways. Users can experiment with various interaction configurations, ranging from a weak coupling that is mediated by the direct exchange of inputs and outputs between models to an advanced coupling that utilizes a third-party tool if the models' data or operating cycles do not align. The users decide how the interactions operate, and the platform offers powerful tools to design key features of the interactions, mobilizing metaprogramming techniques. The proposed framework is demonstrated, implementing coffee berry borers' attacks on Coffea arabica fruits. Observations conducted in a field in Sumatra (Indonesia) assess the coupled interaction model. Finally, we highlight the user-centric implementation characteristics of MIMIC, as a practical and convenient tool that requires minimal coding knowledge to use., (Copyright © 2023 Houssem E. M. Background: PRSS1 and PRSS2 constitute the only functional copies of a tandemly-arranged five-trypsinogen-gene cluster (i.e., PRSS1, PRSS3P1, PRSS3P2, TRY7 and PRSS2) on chromosome 7q35. Variants in PRSS1 and PRSS2, including missense and copy number variants (CNVs), have been reported to predispose to or protect against chronic pancreatitis (CP). We wondered whether a common trypsinogen pseudogene deletion CNV (that removes two of the three trypsinogen pseudogenes, PRSS3P2 and TRY7) might be associated with CP causation/predisposition., Methods: We analyzed the common PRSS3P2 and TRY7 deletion CNV in a total of 1536 CP patients and 3506 controls from France, Germany, India and Japan by means of quantitative fluorescent multiplex polymerase chain reaction., Results: We demonstrated that the deletion CNV variant was associated with a protective effect against CP in the French, German and Japanese cohorts whilst a trend toward the same association was noted in the Indian cohort. Meta-analysis under a dominant model yielded a pooled odds ratio (OR) of 0.68 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.52-0.89; p = 0.005) whereas an allele-based meta-analysis yielded a pooled OR of 0.84 (95% CI 0.77-0.92; p = 0.0001). This protective effect is explicable by reference to the recent finding that the still functional PRSS3P2/TRY7 pseudogene enhancers upregulate pancreatic PRSS2 expression., Conclusions: The common PRSS3P2 and TRY7 deletion CNV was associated with a reduced risk for CP. Aging is characterized by an increase in older adults’ negative beliefs about their memory. These negative metamemory beliefs are thought to decrease their motivation to engage in memory tasks and to implement effective memory strategies leading to decreased memory performance. Memory assessment conditions tend to accentuate this phenomenon by increasing the salience of negative metamemory beliefs, resulting in an artificial reduction in memory performance (i.e., stereotype threat). However, experimental interventions like allowing participants to successfully complete a cognitive task before memory assessment (i.e., prior task success condition) would improve older adults’ metamemory beliefs, allowing them to increase their memory performance. The effect of these psycho-emotional and contextual factors must be taken into account, as they are likely to induce bias in research and clinical examinations.

The effect of age on episodic memory has recently been shown to be modulated by individual characteristics such as psycho-emotional status. We investigated the combined effects of age and a psycho-emotional variable, Self-Esteem, on episodic memory (Cued-recall and recognition). We also examined the contribution of anxiety level on the influence of Self-Esteem on episodic memory during aging. This study revealed different patterns of the Self-Esteem effect according to age group. The effect on cued-recall was accounted for by Anxiety in the younger adults, although Self-Esteem and Anxiety seem to be overlapping dimensions for this age group. By contrast, in the older adults, the two factors influenced memory performance (recognition) independently, suggesting that older adults are particularly sensitive to the factors associated with the Self. We also postulate that there is a zone of optimal executive control by the Self (region of proximal executive control), corresponding to task difficulty linked to the individual's feeling of self-efficacy.

Mendelian and early-onset severe psychiatric phenotypes often involve genetic variants having a large effect, offering opportunities for genetic discoveries and early therapeutic interventions. Here, the index case is an 18-year-old boy, who at 14 years of age had a decline in cognitive functioning over the course of a year and subsequently presented with catatonia, auditory and visual hallucinations, paranoia, aggression, mood dysregulation, and disorganized thoughts. Exome sequencing revealed a stop-gain mutation in RCL1 (NM_005772.4:c.370 C > T, p.Gln124Ter), encoding an RNA 3'-terminal phosphate cyclase-like protein that is highly conserved across eukaryotic species. Subsequent investigations across two academic medical centers identified eleven additional cases of RCL1 copy number variations (CNVs) with varying neurodevelopmental or psychiatric phenotypes. These findings suggest that dosage variation of RCL1 contributes to a range of neurological and clinical phenotypes.

Aim: To determine predictors of full-scale IQ (FSIQ) in an international pediatric opsoclonus myoclonus syndrome (OMS) cohort., Method: In this retrospective and prospective cohort study at three academic medical centers (2006-2013), the primary outcome measure, FSIQ, was categorized based on z-score: above average (≥+1), average (+1 to -1), mildly impaired (-1 to -2), and impaired (<-2). Univariate analysis and multivariable linear regression modeling using stepwise selection with Akaike's information criterion was performed to understand the relationship between exposures and FSIQ., Results: Of 81 participants, 37 with sufficient data had mean FSIQ 84.38 (SD 20.55) and median 90 (40-114) at latest available evaluation (mean age 8y 5mo). Twenty (54%), nine (24.3%), and eight (21.6%) had normal, mildly impaired, and impaired FSIQ respectively. The final multivariable linear regression model included 34 participants with evaluable data: number of relapses occurring before neuropsychological testing (p<0.001) and OMS severity score at last follow-up (p<0.001) predicted FSIQ (adjusted R 2 =0.64). There was a mean decrease of 2.4 FSIQ points per OMS relapse., Interpretation: Number of relapses negatively correlates with FSIQ in pediatric OMS. Background and Aims: EUS-guided biliary drainage is indicated in cases of impossibility or failure of classic biliary drainage by ERCP. Recently we reported good efficiency of EUS-guided choledochoduodenostomy (EUS-CDS) using the electrocautery-enhanced lumen-apposing metal stent (ECE-LAMS) in a retrospective multicenter study. Use of the recommended technique (direct puncture with the ECE-LAMS with use of a pure cut current and a 6-mm stent) was the only predictive factor of clinical success. We re-evaluated this procedure after 1 year in the same centers., Methods: This was a French retrospective multicenter study of a prospective database including all cases of EUS-guided CDS with ECE-LAMS in the 7 centers that participated in the first study., Results: Seventy consecutive patients were included in this study between September 1, 2017, and September 22, 2018. Failure of primary ERCP was due to duodenal stenosis in 44% of cases and to tumoral infiltration of the papilla in 22% of cases. The mean duration of the procedure was 5 ± 3 minutes. The recommended technique was used in 98.5% of cases. The technical and clinical success rates were both 97.1% (69/70). Short-term adverse events (periprocedural and intrahospital) occurred in 1.6%., Conclusions: EUS-CDS with the ECE-LAMS is efficacious and safe in distal malignant obstruction of the common bile duct in cases of ERCP failure with impressive results once expertise is acquired and the recommended technique (direct fistulotomy, pure cut current, and 6-mm stent) is followed., (Copyright © 2020 American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Background: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided biliary drainage is an alternative to percutaneous biliary drainage in cases of malignant biliary obstruction and failure of classic endoscopic drainage by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Recently, a new electrocautery-enhanced lumen-apposing metal stent (ECE-LAMS) that allows for endoscopic anastomosis (apposition stent) has become available for use in EUS-choledochoduodenostomy (EUS-CDS) and facilitates the procedure., Methods: This was a retrospective study of all EUS-CDS procedures performed in France between April 2016 and August 2017. The primary end point was the technical and clinical success rates of EUS-CDS using an ECE-LAMS., Results: 52 consecutive patients were included in the study. The etiology of distal bile duct obstruction was distal pancreatic adenocarcinoma in 43 patients (82.7 %). The technical success rate was 88.5 % (46 /52 patients), and the clinical success rate was 100 % (46/46 patients). The mean duration of the procedure was 10.2 minutes (range 1 - 90). Two patients (3.8 %) presented with short-term complications after EUS-CDS and before discharge from hospital. In univariate analyses, a small diameter of the common bile duct and not following the recommended procedure technique were significant risk factors for technical failure. Over a mean follow-up of 157 days, the median survival time without biliary complications was 135 days., Conclusion: EUS-CDS with an ECE-LAMS is efficacious and safe in distal malignant obstruction of the common bile duct and could be proposed as the first option in cases of ERCP failure., Competing Interests: Drs. The antestia bug, Antestiopsis thunbergii (Gmelin 1790) is a major pest of Arabica coffee in Africa. The bug prefers coffee at the highest elevations, contrary to other major pests. The objectives of this study were to describe the relationship between A. thunbergii populations and elevation, to elucidate this relationship using our knowledge of the pest thermal biology and to predict the pest distribution under climate warming. Antestiopsis thunbergii population density was assessed in 24 coffee farms located along a transect delimited across an elevation gradient in the range 1000-1700 m asl, on Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Density was assessed for three different climatic seasons, the cool dry season in June 2014 and 2015, the short rainy season in October 2014 and the warm dry season in January 2015. The pest distribution was predicted over the same transect using three risk indices: the establishment risk index (ERI), the generation index (GI) and the activity index (AI). These indices were computed using simulated life table parameters obtained from temperature-dependent development models and temperature data from 1) field records using data loggers deployed over the transect and 2) predictions for year 2055 extracted from AFRICLIM database. The observed population density was the highest during the cool dry season and increased significantly with increasing elevation. For current temperature, the ERI increased with an increase in elevation and was therefore distributed similarly to observed populations, contrary to the other indices. This result suggests that immature stage susceptibility to extreme temperatures was a key factor of population distribution as impacted by elevation. In the future, distribution of the risk indices globally indicated a decrease of the risk at low elevation and an increase of the risk at the highest elevations. Vibrational modes of 24 clarinet reeds have been observed in both dry and wet conditions using holographic interferometry. Results have been compared with the "musical quality" of the reeds as judged by two professional clarinet players. An excellent correspondence has been demonstrated between specific vibrational behavior and musical quality. The results suggest that the presence and symmetry of a strong first torsional mode are indicative of good or very good musical quality. A second, but less stringent quality criterion is the proximity of frequencies corresponding to the second torsional and the second flexural mode. This proximity leads to the creation of mixed vibrational modes for the very best of the investigated clarinet reeds.
