A theoretical molecular simulation study of the encapsulation of gaseous SO2 at different temperature conditions in a type II porous liquid is presented here. The system is composed of cage cryptophane-111 molecules that are dispersed in dichloromethane, and it is described using an atomistic modelling of molecular dynamics. Gaseous SO2 tended to almost fully occupy cryptophane-111 cavities throughout the simulation. Calculations were performed at 300 K and 283 K, and some insights into the different adsorption found in each case were obtained. Simulations with different system sizes were also studied. An experimental-like approach was also employed by inserting a SO2 bubble in the simulation box. Finally, an evaluation of the radial distribution function of cryptophane-111 and gaseous SO2 was also performed. From the results obtained, the feasibility of a renewable separation and storage method for SO2 using porous liquids is mentioned.

Stress constantly challenges plant adaptation to the environment. Of all stress types, arsenic was a major threat during the early evolution of plants. The most prevalent chemical form of arsenic is arsenate, whose similarity to phosphate renders it easily incorporated into cells via the phosphate transporters. Here, we found that arsenate stress provokes a notable transposon burst in plants, in coordination with arsenate/phosphate transporter repression, which immediately restricts arsenate uptake. This repression was accompanied by delocalization of the phosphate transporter from the plasma membrane. When arsenate was removed, the system rapidly restored transcriptional expression and membrane localization of the transporter. We identify WRKY6 as an arsenate-responsive transcription factor that mediates arsenate/phosphate transporter gene expression and restricts arsenate-induced transposon activation. The European BrasExplor project aims to explore the genetic diversity present in two economically important Brassica crop species, Brassica oleracea and B. rapa, for sustainable crop production. This diversity is present in wild populations but also in cultivated landraces and has been shaped by contrasting environments. An international consortium of 11 partners has begun to collect and multiply wild populations extending from the French North Atlantic coast to the southern Algerian desert as well as local cultivars from 6 contributing countries in order to characterize the genetic diversity available over a wide soil-climate gradient. A total of 100 populations has been obtained for each species. Identifying the genetic variation and understanding the basis for it will allow the development of breeding strategies for a better adaptation of turnip (Brassica rapa) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) to climate change. One third of the collection has been already phenotyped for its germination traits of native seeds harvested in 2020 for wild populations or of local landraces provided by farmers and seed banks. In favourable conditions, a high diversity in germination capacity and germination rate was observed independently of seed age. The two species have a different germination profile: some turnip seeds can stand higher temperature and lower water potential than most cabbage seeds. Variation in flowering time has also been documented in these plants.

Chloroplast biogenesis is crucial in plant development, as it is essential for the transition to autotrophic growth. This process is light-induced and relies on the orchestrated transcription of nuclear and plastid genes, enabling the effective assembly and regulation of the photosynthetic machinery. Here we reveal a new regulation level for this process by showing the involvement of chromatin remodelling in the nuclear control of plastid gene expression for proper chloroplast biogenesis and function. The two Arabidopsis homologues of yeast EPL1 protein, components of the NuA4 histone acetyltransferase complex, are essential for plastid transcription and correct chloroplast development and performance. We show that EPL1 proteins are light-regulated and necessary for concerted expression of nuclear genes encoding most components of chloroplast transcriptional machinery, directly mediating H4K5ac deposition at these loci and promoting the expression of plastid genes required for chloroplast biogenesis. These data unveil a NuA4-mediated mechanism regulating chloroplast biogenesis that links the transcription of nuclear and plastid genomes during chloroplast development.

Knowledge concerning the integration of genetic pathways mediating the responses to environmental cues controlling flowering initiation in crops is scarce. Here, we reveal the diversity in oilseed rape (OSR) flowering response to high ambient temperature. Using a set of different spring OSR varieties, we found a consistent flowering delay at elevated temperatures. Remarkably, one of the varieties assayed exhibited the opposite behaviour. Several FT-like paralogs are plausible candidates to be part of the florigen in OSR. We revealed that BnaFTA2 plays a major role in temperature-dependent flowering initiation. Analysis of the H2A.Z histone variant occupancy at this locus in different Brassica napus varieties produced contrasting results, suggesting the involvement of additional molecular mechanisms in BnaFTA2 repression at high ambient temperature. Moreover, BnARP6 RNAi plants showed little accumulation of H2A.Z at high temperature while maintaining temperature sensitivity and delayed flowering. Furthermore, we found that H3K4me3 present in BnaFTA2 under inductive flowering conditions is reduced at high temperature, suggesting a role for this hallmark of transcriptionally active chromatin in the OSR flowering response to warming. Our work emphasises the plasticity of flowering responses in B. napus and offers venues to optimise this process in crop species grown under suboptimal environmental conditions.

Epigenetic regulation is necessary for optimal organism development and preservation of gene expression profiles in the cell. In plants, the trimethylation of histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27me3) is a silencing epigenetic mark relevant for developmental transitions like flowering. The floral transition is a key agronomic trait; however, the epigenetic mechanisms of flowering time regulation in crops remain poorly understood. Here we study the Jumonji H3K27me3 demethylases BraA.REF6 and BraA.ELF6 in Brassica rapa. Phenotypic characterization of novel mutant lines and genome-wide H3K27me3 chromatin immunoprecipitation and transcriptomic analyses indicated that BraA.REF6 plays a greater role than BraA.ELF6 in fine-tuning H3K27me3 levels. In addition, we found that braA.elf6 mutants were early flowering due to high H3K27me3 levels at B. rapa homologs of the floral repressor FLC. Unlike mutations in Arabidopsis thaliana, braA.ref6 mutants were late flowering without altering the expression of B. rapa FLC genes. Remarkably, we found that BraA.REF6 regulated a number of gibberellic acid (GA) biosynthetic genes, including a homolog of GA1, and that GA-treatment complemented the late flowering mutant phenotype. This study increases our understanding of the epigenetic regulation of flowering time in B. rapa, highlighting conserved and distinct regulatory mechanisms between model and crop species.

The excess of barium over iron has been used as the most representative indicator of peculiarity. These excesses are higher in the peculiar stars than in the nonpeculiar stars. Particularly interesting is the case of HD 67447, included in the comparison stars, with an excess Ba/Fe abundance = 1.61, probably a new barium star. BD+20 1790 is a young active, metal-rich, late-type K5Ve star. We have undertaken a study of stellar activity and kinematics for this star over the past few years. Previous results show a high level of stellar activity, with the presence of prominence-like structures, spots on the surface, and strong flare events, despite the moderate rotational velocity of the star. In addition, radial velocity variations with a semi-amplitude of up to 1 km s(-1) were detected. Aims. We investigate the nature of these radial velocity variations, in order to determine whether they are due to stellar activity or the reflex motion of the star induced by a companion. Methods. We have analysed high-resolution echelle spectra by measuring stellar activity indicators and computing radial velocity (RV) and bisector velocity spans. Two-band photometry was also obtained to produce the light curve and determine the photometric period. Results. Based upon the analysis of the bisector velocity span, as well as spectroscopic indices of chromospheric indicators, Ca II H & K, H alpha, and taking the photometric analysis into account, we report that the best explanation for the RV variation is the presence of a substellar companion. The Keplerian fit of the RV data yields a solution for a close-in massive planet with an orbital period of 7.78 days. The presence of the close-in massive planet could also be an interpretation for the high level of stellar activity detected. Since the RV data are not part of a planet search programme, we can consider our results as a serendipitous evidence of a planetary companion. Since most of these binaries have known radii, masses and ages, this kind of data is especially useful for comparisons with theoretical models which try to explain the Li depletion phenomenon. We show that a significant part of these stars have clear Li overabundances with respect to the typical values for stars of the same mass and evolutionary stage. These excesses are evident when comparing our sample of CABS with binary and single stars belonging to open clusters of different ages, namely Pleiades, Hyades, NGC752, M67 and NGC188, which have ages ranging from 7x10^7 to 10^10 yr. The Li excesses are more conspicuous for masses in the range 0.75-0.95 M_⊙., indicating that the rate of Li depletion has been less pronounced in CABS than in single stars. This phenomenon is interpreted in the context of transport of angular momentum from the orbit to the stellar rotation due to tidal effects. This angular momentum transfer would avoid the radial differential rotation and the associated turbulent mixing of material in the stellar interior. Other explanations, however, can not be ruled out. This is the case of transport of material induced by internal gravity waves, which could be inhibited due to the presence of strong magnetic fields associated with the effective dynamo in CABS.
