2. Can a Learning Analytics Dashboard Participative Design Approach Be Transposed to an Online-Only Context?

Abstract

In-person sessions of participative design are commonly used in the field of Learning Analytics, but to reach students not always available on-site (e.g. during a pandemic), they have to be adapted to online-only context. Card-based tools are a common co-design method to collect users' needs, but this tangible format limits data collection and usage. We propose here two steps: first to use an existing co-design card deck-based method for our university context and next to adapt this new method called PADDLE (PArticipative Design of Dashboard for Learning in Education) for an online use. This article presents key factors and points of attention identified in adapting a card-based co-design method into a digital version for designing learning dashboards. This digital adaptation and the associated tool, ePADDLE, were tested with first year university students divided into 18 groups (N = 58). All groups have successfully designed a dashboard, and using the original evaluation scales, users have evaluated ePADDLE as almost as suitable as the original method. Thanks to the traces provided by the online version, we rely on speech acts to identify favorable conditions for successful collaboration. [For the full proceedings, see ED621108.]

12. David Procedure: A 21-year Experience With 300 Patients.

Abstract

Valve-sparing aortic root replacement with the David procedure is an alternative to the Bentall procedure in patients with aortic root aneurysm. The aim of this study was to describe our long-term experience with this technique and the predictive factors of late failure. Between January 1998 and August 2019, 300 consecutive patients underwent a David procedure. Clinical and echocardiographic early- and long-term outcomes were analyzed. Median follow-up was 7.0 years (range, 4.1-11.5), with 98.3% complete. Early mortality was 1%. No early valve-related reoperations occurred. There were 9 cardiac-related deaths and 22 reinterventions (19 valve-related). All patients survived reoperation. In 3 patients reintervention consisted of transcatheter aortic valve implantation. Overall survival rates were 95.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 92.0-97.2), 91.1% (95% CI, 86.5-94.2), and 82.9% (95% CI, 75.3-88.4) at 5, 10, and 15 years, respectively. Freedom from postoperative aortic insufficiency (AI) grade ≥ 2 was 84.8% (95% CI, 79.9-88.6) and 74.3% (95% CI, 67.4-79.9) at 5 and 10 years, respectively. Freedom from reintervention for aortic valve disease was 97.1% (95% CI, 94.2-98.5), 92.9% (95% CI, 88.2-95.7), and 92.5% (95% CI, 87.1-95.7) at 5, 10, and 15 years, respectively. Preoperative AI ≥ 2 (hazard ratio, 1.782; 95% CI, 1.352-2.350) and a ventriculoaortic junction ≥ 29 mm (hazard ratio, 3.379; 95% CI, 1.726-6.616) were predictive factors for postoperative AI ≥ 2 in a multivariate analysis (P <.001). Preoperative AI ≥ 2 and a ventriculoaortic junction ≥ 29 mm were identified as risk factors for late postoperative AI ≥ 2. [Display omitted] [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; ObjectifsL’objectif de ce travail est d’apprécier l’impact d’une séance de simulation sur la capacité des étudiants en pharmacie d’officine et médecine générale à communiquer dans la résolution de situations face au patient.MéthodesL’évaluation de l’impact de la séance sur la représentation des métiers a utilisé un questionnaire à remplir avant et après la séance par les étudiants. L’évaluation de l’impact de la séance sur la perception de la communication et les compétences associées s’est appuyée sur un enregistrement audio des débriefings, qui, après retranscription et analyse thématique, a servi d’analyse préliminaire à la rédaction d’un questionnaire proposé l’année suivante. Celui-ci portait sur les problématiques de la communication interprofessionnelle et sur le déroulé du séminaire.RésultatsLors des séminaires de 2018 et 2019, 518 étudiants étaient présents, 39 % étaient étudiants en pharmacie (n = 201) et 61 % étudiants en médecine (n = 317). La majorité des étudiants en médecine ont répondu initialement que la communication entre médecin et pharmacien était confraternelle et rare. Les étudiants en pharmacie étaient plus nombreux à trouver que la qualité de la relation entre médecin et pharmacien était mauvaise. Cependant, il a été noté une nette amélioration pour l’ensemble des étudiants sur cet aspect de la communication après le séminaire. Les deux groupes étaient également globalement d’accord pour dire que cette relation était améliorable.ConclusionsL’évaluation montre qu’un programme de simulation interprofessionnelle améliore la capacité des étudiants en pharmacie d’officine et médecine générale à communiquer dans la résolution de situations face au patient.

Abstract

International audience; During co-design sessions with students, we explored the link between Belbin's profiles, roles used in project management and speech acts used to specify the speaker's intentions, which are complementary keys of successful collaboration. Identifying links between each Belbin's profile and some particular speech acts would allow us to consider automatically identifying team members' roles or recommending ways to better communicate. For this study, discourses of 14 groups have been coded in speech acts and analyzed to find links with the primary and secondary Belbin's profiles of 31 students. We were interested in the proportion of speech acts per Belbin's profile. We found some links as the coordinator profile intervenes less often, but answers more questions from the team or the completer-finisher profile often validates the interventions of the others members. Extending this work would involve analyzing speech acts patterns links with Belbin's roles and how this can support successful collaborations.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to provide a reliable instrument to assess evidence-based practice (EBP) dimensions in French-speaking dental students. To do so, a transcultural adaptation into French of the self-administered KACE questionnaire (Knowledge, Attitude, Access and Confidence Evaluation) and the evaluation of its psychometric properties in a sample of French dental students and teachers were performed. The effects of individual and academic factors on student performance in the KACE were also investigated. Method: Teachers and fourth-year students completed once the translated KACE and fifth-year students completed twice the questionnaire before and after an epidemiology course. Cronbach's alpha coefficient analysis, Kruskal-Wallis and post hoc Dunn's tests, paired samples Wilcoxon tests and a generalised linear mixed model were performed to assess the psychometric properties (reliability, internal consistency, discriminant validity and responsiveness) of the questionnaire and to identify the factors associated with KACE scores, respectively. Results: 186 participants completed the survey. Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.06 to 0.48 for Knowledge, 0.21 to 0.59 for Attitude, 0.42 to 0.76 for Access and 0.82 to 0.93 for Confidence. The discriminant value and sensitivity of the French KACE revealed significant differences amongst students and teachers and accurately identified the effect the training course had on the students who had completed it. Preparing for a residency programme or having received add-on modules in science improved the students' performance in the test. Being female negatively impacted the KACE Confidence score. Conclusion: This version of the KACE is appropriate to assess EBP dimensions in French dental students. Academic background and gender may affect test performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Background: During their studies, pharmacy students must acquire the specific skills in clinical virology required for their subsequent professional practice. Recent experiments on teaching and learning in higher education have shown that hybrid courses strengthen the students’ commitment to learning and enable high-quality knowledge acquisition.Objective: This study concerned the design and deployment of a hybrid course that combines face-to-face and Web-based instruction in clinical virology for fourth-year pharmacy students. The study’s objectives were to (1) measure the students’ level of involvement in the course, (2) gauge their interest in this type of learning, and (3) highlight any associated difficulties.Methods: The study included 194 fourth-year pharmacy students from the Lille Faculty of Pharmacy (University of Lille, Lille, France) between January and June 2017. The students followed a hybrid course comprising an online learning module and 5 tutorial sessions in which professional situations were simulated. The learning module and 3 online evaluation sessions were delivered via the Moodle learning management system. Each tutorial session ended with an evaluation. The number of Moodle log-ins, the number of views of learning resources, and the evaluation marks were recorded. The coefficient for the correlation between the marks in the online evaluation and those in the tutorials was calculated. The students’ opinions and level of satisfaction were evaluated via a course questionnaire.Results: The course’s learning resources and Web pages were viewed 21,446 and 3413 times, respectively. Of the 194 students, 188 (96.9%) passed the course (ie, marks of at least 10 out of 20). There was a satisfactory correlation between the marks obtained in the online evaluations and those obtained after the tutorials. The course met the students’ expectations in 53.2% of cases, and 57.4% of the students stated that they were able to work at their own pace. Finally, 26.6% of the students stated that they had difficulty organizing their work around this hybrid course.Conclusions: Our results showed that pharmacy students were strongly in favor of a hybrid course. The levels of attendance and participation were high. However, teachers must be aware that some students will encounter organizational difficulties.

To determine the presence of CoVs in French bats, fecal samples were collected between July and August of 2014 from four bat species in seven different locations around the city of Bourges in France. We present for the first time the presence of alpha-CoVs in French Pipistrellus pipistrellus bat species with an estimated prevalence of 4.2%. Based on the analysis of a fragment of the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene, phylogenetic analyses show that alpha-CoVs sequences detected in French bats are closely related to other European bat alpha-CoVs. Phylogeographic analyses of RdRp sequences show that several CoVs strains circulate in European bats: (i) old strains detected that have probably diverged a long time ago and are detected in different bat subspecies, (ii) strains detected in Myotis and Pipistrellus bat species that have more recently diverged. Our findings support previous observations describing the complexity of the detected CoVs in bats worldwide.

Abstract

This study is the first to examine the prognostic role of physician empathy in interaction with the type of consultation (TC) (TC, bad news versus follow-up consultations) in cancer patient survival. Between January 2015 and March 2016, 179 outpatients with thoracic cancer and a Karnofsky performance status &ge, 60 assessed their oncologist&rsquo, s empathy using the CARE questionnaire, which provides a general score and two sub-dimensions: listening/compassion and active/positive empathy. Survival was recorded until April 2018. Usual medical, social and psychological confounders were included in the Cox regression. The median follow-up time was 3.1 years. There was a statistical interaction between listening/compassion empathy and TC (p = 0.016) such that in bad news consultations, higher listening/compassion predicted a higher risk of death (hazard ratio (HR) = 1.13, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03&ndash, 1.23, p = 0.008). In follow-up consultations, listening/compassion did not predict survival (HR = 0.94, 95% CI: 0.85&ndash, 1.05, p = 0.30). The same results were found with the general score of empathy, but not with active/positive empathy. In bad news consultations, high patient-perceived physician compassion could worry patients by conveying the idea that there is no longer any hope, which could hasten death. Further studies are warranted to confirm these results and find out the determinants of patient perception of physician empathy.

Abstract

International audience; Sterilising glucose solutions by heat promotes the generation of a large number of glucose degradation products (GDPs). It has been shown that high levels of GDPs may result in Advanced Glycation End products that have an impact on cellular homeostasis and health in general. If data is available for peritoneal dialysis solutions, little has been published for glucose infusion fluids. It is essential to identify the parameters causing the formation of GDPs and so limit the risk of exposing patients to them. After quantifying both 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural, considered as an important indicator of degradation, and 2-furaldehyde, an ultimate GDP of one degradation pathway, in marketed solutions, the aim of this work is to build a model integrating all the parameters involved in the formation rates of these two GDPs: supplier, glucose amount, container material, oxygen permeability coefficient and time-lapse since manufacture. Our results show a good logarithmic relationship between GDP formation rates and time-lapse since manufacture for both GDPs. The amount of GDPs in the glucose solutions for infusion depends on the initial glucose amount, the polymer of the container, the time elapsed since manufacturing and the supplier.
