The First Large Absorption Survey in HI (FLASH) is a large-area radio survey for neutral hydrogen in the redshift range 0.41$, and appear to be a mixture of intervening and associated systems. The overall detection rate for HI absorption lines in the Pilot Surveys (0.3 to 0.5 lines per ASKAP field) is a factor of two below the expected value. There are several possible reasons for this, but one likely factor is the presence of a range of spectral-line artefacts in the Pilot Survey data that have now been mitigated and are not expected to recur in the full FLASH survey. We present a new method of predicting the ages of galaxies using a machine learning (ML) algorithm with the goal of providing an alternative to traditional methods. We aim to match the ability of traditional models to predict the ages of galaxies by training an artificial neural network (ANN) to recognise the relationships between the equivalent widths of spectral indices and the mass-weighted ages of galaxies estimated by the MAGPHYS model in data release 3 (DR3) of the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. We discuss the optimisation of our hyperparameters extensively and investigate the application of a custom loss function to reduce the influence of errors in our input data. To quantify the quality of our predictions we calculate the mean squared error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE) and R^2 score for which we find MSE = 0.020, MAE = 0.108 and R^2 = 0.530. We find our predicted ages have a similar distribution with standard deviation sigma_p = 0.182 compared with the GAMA true ages sigma_t = 0.207. This is achieved in approximately 23s to train our ANN on an 11th Gen Intel Core i9-11900H running at 2.50GHz using 32GB of RAM. We report our results for when light-weighted ages are used to train the ANN, which improves the accuracy of the predictions. The large-scale structure (LSS) of the Universe is comprised of galaxy filaments, tendrils, and voids. The majority of the Universe's volume is taken up by these voids, which exist as underdense, but not empty, regions. The galaxies found inside these voids are expected to be some of the most isolated objects in the Universe. This study, using the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) and Galaxy Zoo surveys, aims to investigate basic physical properties and morphology of void galaxies versus field (filament and tendril) galaxies. We use void galaxies with stellar masses of $9.35 < log(M/M_\odot) < 11.25$, and this sample is split by identifying two redshift-limited regions, 0 < z < 0.075, and, $0.075 < z < 0.15$. To find comparable objects in the sample of field galaxies from GAMA and Galaxy Zoo, we identify "twins" of void galaxies as field galaxies within $\pm$0.05 dex and $\pm$0.15 dex of M and specific star formation rate. We determine the statistical significance of our results using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS) test. We see that void galaxies, in contrast with field galaxies, seem to be disk-dominated and have predominantly round bulges (with > 50 percent of the Galaxy Zoo citizen scientists agreeing that bulges are present)., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, 3 tables, accepted by MNRAS

We present an application of autoencoders to the problem of noise reduction in single-shot astronomical images and explore its suitability for upcoming large-scale surveys. Autoencoders are a machine learning model that summarises an input to identify its key features, then from this knowledge predicts a representation of a different input. The broad aim of our autoencoder model is to retain morphological information (e.g., non-parametric morphological information) from the survey data whilst simultaneously reducing the noise contained in the image. We implement an autoencoder with convolutional and maxpooling layers. We test our implementation on images from the Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) that contain varying levels of noise and report how successful our autoencoder is by considering Mean Squared Error (MSE), Structural Similarity Index (SSIM), the second-order moment of the brightest 20 percent of the galaxy's flux M20, and the Gini coefficient, whilst noting how the results vary between the original images, stacked images, and noise reduced images. We show that we are able to reduce noice, over many different targets of observations, whilst retaining the galaxy's morphology, with metric evaluation on a target by target analysis. We present a pilot study to assess the potential of Hyper Suprime-Cam Public Data Release 2 (HSC-PDR2) images for the analysis of extended faint structures within groups of galaxies. We examine the intra-group light (IGL) of the group 400138 ($M_{\rm{dyn}}= 1.3 \pm 0.5 \times 10^{13} $M$_{\odot}$, $z\sim 0.2$) from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey using Hyper-Suprime Cam Subaru Strategic Program Public Data Release 2 (HSC-PDR2) images in $g$, $r$, and $i$ bands. We present the most extended IGL measurement to date, reaching down to $\mu_{g}^{\rm{lim}}=30.76$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ ($3 \sigma$; $10 \times 10$ arcsec$^{2}$) at a semi-major axis of 275 kpc. The IGL shows mean colour values of $g-i=0.92$, $g-r=0.60$, and $r-i=0.32$ ($\pm$0.01). The IGL stellar populations are younger ($2-2.5$ Gyr) and less metal-rich ([Fe/H] $ \sim -$0.4) than those of the host group galaxies. We find a range of IGL fractions as a function of total group luminosity of $\sim 2-36 \%$ depending on the definition of IGL, with larger fractions the bluer the observation wavelength. The early-type to late-type galaxy ratio suggests that 400138 is a more evolved group, dominated by ETGs, and the IGL fraction agrees with that of other similarly evolved groups. These results are consistent with tidal stripping of the outer parts of Milky Way-like galaxies as the main driver of the IGL build-up. This is supported by the detection of substructure in the IGL towards the galaxy member 1660615 suggesting a recent interaction ($<1$ Gyr ago) of that galaxy with the core of the group., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Galaxies broadly fall into two categories: star-forming (blue) galaxies and quiescent (red) galaxies. In between, one finds the less populated ``green valley". Some of these galaxies are suspected to be in the process of ceasing their star-formation through a gradual exhaustion of gas supply or already dead and are experiencing a rejuvenation of star-formation through fuel injection. We use the Galaxy And Mass Assembly database and the Galaxy Zoo citizen science morphological estimates to compare the morphology of galaxies in the green valley against those in the red sequence and blue cloud. Our goal is to examine the structural differences within galaxies that fall in the green valley, and what brings them there. Previous results found disc features such as rings and lenses are more prominently represented in the green valley population. We revisit this with a similar sized data set of galaxies with morphology labels provided by the Galaxy Zoo for the GAMA fields based on new KiDS images. Our aim is to compare qualitatively the results from expert classification to that of citizen science. We observe that ring structures are indeed found more commonly in green valley galaxies compared to their red and blue counterparts. We suggest that ring structures are a consequence of disc galaxies in the green valley actively exhibiting characteristics of fading discs and evolving disc morphology of galaxies. Galaxy populations show bimodality in a variety of properties: stellar mass, colour, specific star-formation rate, size, and S\'ersic index. These parameters are our feature space. We use an existing sample of 7556 galaxies from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, represented using five features and the K-means clustering technique, showed that the bimodalities are the manifestation of a more complex population structure, represented by between 2 and 6 clusters. Here we use Self Organizing Maps (SOM), an unsupervised learning technique which can be used to visualize similarity in a higher dimensional space using a 2D representation, to map these five-dimensional clusters in the feature space onto two-dimensional projections. To further analyze these clusters, using the SOM information, we agree with previous results that the sub-populations found in the feature space can be reasonably mapped onto three or five clusters. We explore where the "green valley" galaxies are mapped onto the SOM, indicating multiple interstitial populations within the green valley population. Finally, we use the projection of the SOM to verify whether morphological information provided by GalaxyZoo users, for example, if features are visible, can be mapped onto the SOM-generated map. Voting on whether galaxies are smooth, likely ellipticals, or "featured" can reasonably be separated but smaller morphological features (bar, spiral arms) can not. In Galaxy And Mass Assembly Data Release 4 (GAMA DR4), we make available our full spectroscopic redshift sample. This includes 248682 galaxy spectra, and, in combination with earlier surveys, results in 330542 redshifts across five sky regions covering ~250deg^2. The redshift density, is the highest available over such a sustained area, has exceptionally high completeness (95 per cent to r_KIDS=19.65mag), and is well suited for the study of galaxy mergers, galaxy groups, and the low redshift (z<0.25) galaxy population. DR4 includes 32 value-added tables or Data Management Units (DMUs) that provide a number of measured and derived data products including GALEX, ESO KiDS, ESO VIKING, WISE and Herschel Space Observatory imaging. Within this release, we provide visual morphologies for 15330 galaxies to z<0.08, photometric redshift estimates for all 18million objects to r_KIDS~25mag, and stellar velocity dispersions for 111830 galaxies. We conclude by deriving the total galaxy stellar mass function (GSMF) and its sub-division by morphological class (elliptical, compact-bulge and disc, diffuse-bulge and disc, and disc only). This extends our previous measurement of the total GSMF down to 10^6.75 M_sol h^-2_70 and we find a total stellar mass density of rho_*=(2.97+/-0.04)x10^8 M_sol h_70 Mpc^-3 or Omega_*=(2.17+/-0.03)x10^-3 h^-1_70. We conclude that at z<0.1, the Universe has converted 4.9+/-0.1 per cent of the baryonic mass implied by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis into stars that are gravitationally bound within the galaxy population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Understanding the connection between nuclear activity and galaxy environment remains critical in constraining models of galaxy evolution. By exploiting extensive catalogued data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, we identify a representative sample of 205 quasars at 0.1 < z < 0.35 and establish a comparison sample of galaxies, closely matched to the quasar sample in terms of both stellar mass and redshift. On scales <1 Mpc, the galaxy number counts and group membership of quasars appear entirely consistent with those of the matched galaxy sample. Despite this, we find that quasars are ~1.5 times more likely to be classified as the group center, indicating a potential link between quasar activity and cold gas flows or galaxy interactions associated with rich group environments. On scales of ~a few Mpc, the clustering strength of both samples are statistically consistent and beyond 10 Mpc we find no evidence that quasars trace large scale structures any more than the galaxy control sample. Both populations are found to prefer intermediate-density sheets and filaments to either very high- or very low- density environments. This weak dependence of quasar activity on galaxy environment supports a paradigm in which quasars represent a phase in the lifetime of all massive galaxies and in which secular processes and a group-centric location are the dominant trigger of quasars at low redshift., Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures, accepted to ApJ

The relationship between active galactic nuclei activity and environment has been long discussed, but it is unclear if these relations extend into the dwarf galaxy mass regime -- in part due to the limits in both observations and simulations. We aim to investigate if the merger histories and environments are significantly different between AGN and non-AGN dwarf galaxies in cosmological simulations, which may be indicative of the importance of these for AGN activity in dwarf galaxies, and whether these results are in line with observations. Using the IllustrisTNG flagship TNG100-1 run, 6\,771 dwarf galaxies are found with 3\,863 ($\sim$57 per cent) having some level of AGN activity. In order to quantify `environment', two measures are used: 1) the distance to a galaxy's 10th nearest neighbour at 6 redshifts and 2) the time since last merger for three different minimum merger mass ratios. A similar analysis is run on TNG50-1 and Illustris-1 to test for the robustness of the findings. Both measures yield significantly different distributions between AGN and non-AGN galaxies; more non-AGN than AGN galaxies have long term residence in dense environments while recent ($\leq 4 \text{ Gyr}$) minor mergers are more common for intermediate AGN activity. Using a volume-limited sample of 550 groups from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) Galaxy Group Catalogue spanning the halo mass range $12.8 < \log [M_{h}/M] < 14.2$, we investigate the merging potential of central Brightest Group Galaxies (BGGs). We use spectroscopically-confirmed close-companion galaxies as an indication of the potential stellar mass build-up of low-redshift BGGs, $z \leq 0.2$. We identify 17 close-companion galaxies with projected separations $r_{p} < 30$ kpc, relative velocities $\Delta v \leq 300$ km s$^{-1}$, and stellar-mass ratios $M_{BGG}/M_{CC} \leq 4$ relative to the BGG. These close-companion galaxies yield a total pair fraction of $0.03 \pm 0.01$. Overall, we find that BGGs in our sample have the potential to grow in stellar mass due to mergers by $2.2 \pm 1.5\%$ Gyr$^{-1}$. We produce a kinematic analysis of AGN-hosting cluster galaxies from a sample 33 galaxy clusters selected using the X-ray Clusters Database (BAX) and populated with galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 8 (DR8). The 33 galaxy clusters are delimited by their relative intensity of member galaxy substructuring as a proxy to core merging to derive two smaller sub-samples of 8 dynamically active (merging) and 25 dynamically relaxed (non-merging) states. The AGN were selected for each cluster sub-sample by employing the WHAN diagram to the strict criteria of log$_{10}$([NII]/H$\alpha$)$\geq-0.32$ and EW$_{\mathrm{H}\alpha}$ $\geq$ 6{\AA}, providing pools of 70 merging and 225 non-merging AGN sub-populations. By co-adding the clusters to their respective dynamical states to improve the signal-to-noise of our AGN sub-populations we find that merging galaxy clusters on average host kinematically active AGN between 0-1.5 $r_{200}$ as $r_{200}\rightarrow0$, where their velocity dispersion profile (VDP) presents a significant deviation from the non-AGN sub-population VDP by $\gtrsim3\sigma$. This result is indicative that the AGN-hosting cluster galaxies have recently coalesced onto a common potential. Further analysis of the composite distributions illustrate non-merging AGN-hosting sub-populations have, on average, already been accreted and predominantly lie within backsplash regions of the projected phase-space. This study aims to explore the relation between dwarf galaxies ($M_* \leq 5\times10^9 M_\odot$) with AGNs and their environment by comparing neighbourhood parameters of AGN and non-AGN samples. Using the NASA-Sloan Atlas, both the local environment and the immediate environment of dwarf galaxies with $z \leq 0.055$ are analysed. Of the 145,155 galaxies in the catalogue, 62,258 of them are classified as dwarf galaxies, and by employing two AGN selection methods based on emission line fluxes (BPT and WHAN), 4,476 are found to have AGN characteristics in their optical spectra. Regardless of selection method, this study finds no discernible differences in environment between AGN and non-AGN host dwarf galaxies and these results indicate that environment is not an important factor in triggering AGN activity in dwarf galaxies. This is in line with existing literature on environments of regular galaxies with AGNs and suggests universality in terms of reaction to environment across the mass regime. The biases of AGN selection in low-mass galaxies, and the biases of different measures of environment are also considered. It is found that there are several mass-trends in emission line ratios and that the SDSS fiber covers galaxies non-uniformly with redshift. These biases should be accounted for in future work by possibly including other wavelength regimes or mass-weighting of emission line ratios. Lastly, a discussion of the environment estimation methods is included since they may not gauge the desired properties due to factors such as time delay or using loosely constrained proxy parameters., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. We use multi-wavelength data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey to explore the cause of red optical colours in nearby (0.002= 47% of all spirals in our sample. Furthermore, for a small subsample of our spiral galaxies which are detected in HI, we find that the SFR of gas-rich red spiral galaxies is lower by ~1 dex than their blue counterparts., Comment: Accepted for publication in the MNRAS; 11 pages; 12 figures

The WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey measured the redshifts of over 200,000 UV-selected (NUV<22.8 mag) galaxies on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The survey detected the baryon acoustic oscillation signal in the large scale distribution of galaxies over the redshift range 0.2

We compile two samples of cluster galaxies with complimentary hydrodynamic and N-body analysis using FLASH code to ascertain how their differing populations drive their rotational profiles and to better understand their dynamical histories. We select our main cluster sample from the X-ray Galaxy Clusters Database (BAX), which are populated with Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies. The BAX clusters are tested for the presence of sub-structures, acting as proxies for core mergers, culminating in sub-samples of 8 merging and 25 non-merging galaxy clusters. An additional sample of 12 galaxy clusters with known dumbbell components is procured using galaxy data from the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED) to compare against more extreme environments. BAX clusters of each sample are stacked onto a common RA-DEC space to produce rotational profiles within the range of $0.0 - 2.5$ $r_{200}$. Merging stacks possess stronger core rotation at $\lesssim 0.5 r_{200}$ primarily contributed by a red galaxy sub-population from relaxing core mergers, this is alongside high rotational velocities from blue galaxy sub-populations, until, they mix and homogenise with the red sub-populations at $\sim r_{200}$, indicative of an infalling blue galaxy sub-population with interactive mixing between both sub-populations at $\gtrsim r_{200}$. FLASH code is utilised to simulate the merger phase between two originally independent clusters and test the evolution of their rotational profiles. The Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey has morphologically identified a class of "Little Blue Spheroid" (LBS) galaxies whose relationship to other classes of galaxies we now examine in detail. Considering a sample of 868 LBSs, we find that such galaxies display similar but not identical colours, specific star formation rates, stellar population ages, mass-to-light ratios, and metallicities to Sd-Irr galaxies. We also find that LBSs typically occupy environments of even lower density than those of Sd-Irr galaxies, where ~65% of LBS galaxies live in isolation. Using deep, high-resolution imaging from VST KiDS and the new Bayesian, two-dimensional galaxy profile modeling code PROFIT, we further examine the detailed structure of LBSs and find that their S\'ersic indices, sizes, and axial ratios are compatible with those of low-mass elliptical galaxies. We then examine SAMI Galaxy survey integral field emission line kinematics for a subset of 62 LBSs and find that the majority (42) of these galaxies display ordered rotation with the remainder displaying disturbed/non-ordered dynamics. Finally, we consider potential evolutionary scenarios for a population with this unusual combination of properties, concluding that LBSs are likely formed by a mixture of merger and accretion processes still recently active in low-redshift dwarf populations. We use deep, $\mu_{r} \lesssim 28\,\text{mag}\,\text{arcsec}^{-2}$, $r$-band imaging from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) to search for past, or ongoing, merger activity in a sample of $282$ Low Excitation Radio Galaxies (LERGs) at $z<0.07$. Our principle aim is to assess the the role of mergers in the evolution of LERGs. Exploiting the imaging depth, we classify tidal remnants around galaxies as both minor and major morphological disturbances for our LERG sample and $1,622$ control galaxies matched in redshift, stellar mass, and environment. In groups and in the field, the LERG minor merger fraction is consistent with the control population. In galaxy clusters, $8.8 \pm 2.9\,$ % of LERGs show evidence of recent minor mergers in contrast to $23.0\pm 2.0\,$ % of controls. This $\sim 4 \sigma $ deficit of minor mergers in cluster LERGs suggests these events may inhibit this type of nuclear activity for galaxies within the cluster environment. We observe a $> 4\sigma$ excess of major mergers in the LERGs with $M_{*} \lesssim 10^{11}\,\text{M}_{\odot}$, with $10 \pm 1.5\,$ % of these AGN involved in such large-scale interactions compared to $3.2 \pm 0.4\,$% of control galaxies. This excess of major mergers in LERGs decreases with increasing stellar mass, vanishing by $M_{*} > 10^{11.3}\,\text{M}_{\odot}$. These observations show that minor mergers do not fuel LERGs, and are consistent with typical LERGs being powered by accretion of matter from their halo. Where LERGs are associated with major mergers, these objects may evolve into more efficiently accreting active galactic nuclei as the merger progresses and more gas falls on to the central engine., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We measured evolution of the $K$-band luminosity function and stellar mass function for red and blue galaxies at $z<1.2$ using a sample of 353 594 $I<24$ galaxies in 8.26 square degrees of Bo\"otes. We addressed several sources of systematic and random error in measurements of total galaxy light, photometric redshift and absolute magnitude. We have found that the $K$-band luminosity density for both red and blue galaxies increased by a factor of 1.2 from $z\sim1.1$ to $z\sim0.3$, while the most luminous red (blue) galaxies decreased in luminosity by 0.19 (0.33) mag or $\times0.83 (0.74)$. These results are consistent with $z<0.2$ studies while our large sample size and area result in smaller Poisson and cosmic variance uncertainties than most $z >0.4$ luminosity and mass function measurements. Using an evolving relation for $K$-band mass to light ratios as a function of $(B-V)$ color, we found a slowly decreasing rate of growth in red galaxy stellar mass density of $\times2.3$ from $z\sim1.1$ to $z\sim0.3$, indicating a slowly decreasing rate of migration from the blue cloud to the red sequence. Unlike some studies of the stellar mass function, we find that massive red galaxies grow by a factor of $\times1.7$ from $z\sim1.1$ to $z\sim0.3$, with the rate of growth due to mergers decreasing with time. These results are comparable with measurements of merger rates and clustering, and they are also consistent with the red galaxy stellar mass growth implied by comparing $K$-band luminosity evolution with the fading of passive stellar population models., Comment: 27 pages, 27 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present an analysis of the kinematics of a sample of 14 galaxy clusters via velocity dispersion profiles (VDPs), compiled using cluster parameters defined within the X-Ray Galaxy Clusters Database (BAX) cross-matched with data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We determine the presence of substructure in the clusters from the sample as a proxy for recent core mergers, resulting in 4 merging and 10 non-merging clusters to allow for comparison between their respective dynamical states. We create VDPs for our samples and divide them by mass, colour and morphology to assess how their kinematics respond to the environment. To improve the signal-to-noise ratio our galaxy clusters are normalised and co-added to a projected cluster radius at $0.0 - 2.5$ $r_{200}$. We find merging cluster environments possess an abundance of a kinematically-active (rising VDP) mix of red and blue elliptical galaxies, which is indicative of infalling substructures responsible for pre-processing galaxies. Comparatively, in non-merging cluster environments galaxies generally decline in kinematic activity as a function of increasing radius, with bluer galaxies possessing the highest velocities, likely as a result of fast infalling field galaxies. However, the variance in kinematic activity between blue and red cluster galaxies across merging and non-merging cluster environments suggests galaxies exhibit differing modes of galaxy accretion onto a cluster potential as a function of the presence of a core merger., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society; 16 pages, 7 figures

The design of some spectroscopic galaxy surveys is such that fibre collisions can affect the completeness of the survey. To quantify this effect, we compare the two-point correlation functions, $\omega(\theta)$, of two surveys with differing observational strategies. Fibre collisions are an accepted consequence of the design of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey's spectroscopic campaign (SDSS), whereas the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA) circumvents fibre-collisions by re-observing fields using different fibre configurations. We show that the correlation functions of these surveys diverge at scales smaller than the SDSS fibre collision limit, and that at separations smaller than $20''$ $\omega(\theta)_{\text{GAMA}} > \omega(\theta)_{\text{SDSS}}$ with $>4\sigma$ confidence., Comment: Accepted for publication in Research Notes of the AAS, 3 pages, 1 figure

In galaxy clusters, efficiently accreting active galactic nuclei (AGN) are preferentially located in the infall regions of the cluster projected phase-space, and are rarely found in the cluster core. This has been attributed to both an increase in triggering opportunities for infalling galaxies, and a reduction of those mechanisms in the hot, virialised, cluster core. Exploiting the depth and completeness ($98\,$per cent at $r<19.8\,$mag) of the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey (GAMA), we probe down the group halo mass function to assess whether AGN are found in the same regions in groups as they are in clusters. We select 451 optical AGN from 7498 galaxies with $\log_{10}(M_*/\text{M}_\odot) > 9.9$ in 695 groups with $11.53\leq \log_{10}(M_{200}/\text{M}_\odot) \leq 14.56$ at $z<0.15$. By analysing the projected phase-space positions of these galaxies we demonstrate that when split both radially, and into physically derived infalling and core populations, AGN position within group projected phase-space is dependent on halo mass. For groups with $\log_{10}(M_{200}/\text{M}_\odot)>13.5$, AGN are preferentially found in the infalling galaxy population with $3.6\sigma$ confidence. At lower halo masses we observe no difference in AGN fraction between core and infalling galaxies. These observations support a model where a reduced number of low-speed interactions, ram pressure stripping and intra-group/cluster medium temperature, the dominance of which increase with halo mass, work to inhibit AGN in the cores of groups and clusters with $\log_{10}(M_{200}/\text{M}_\odot)>13.5$, but do not significantly affect nuclear activity in cores of less massive structures., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society 12 pages, 9 figures

In this paper we test if nearby blue spheroid (BSphs) galaxies may become the progenitors of star-forming spiral galaxies or passively-evolving elliptical galaxies. Our sample comprises 428 galaxies of various morphologies in the redshift range 0.002

We examine the properties of a sample of 35 nearby passive spiral galaxies in order to determine their dominant quenching mechanism(s). All five low mass ($\textrm{M}_{\star} < 1 \times 10^{10} \textrm{M}_{\odot}$) passive spiral galaxies are located in the rich Virgo cluster. This is in contrast to low mass spiral galaxies with star formation, which inhabit a range of environments. We postulate that cluster-scale gas stripping and heating mechanisms operating only in rich clusters are required to quench low mass passive spirals, and ram-pressure stripping and strangulation are obvious candidates. For higher mass passive spirals, while trends are present, the story is less clear. The passive spiral bar fraction is high: 74$\pm$15%, compared with 36$\pm$5% for a mass, redshift, and T-type matched comparison sample of star forming spiral galaxies. The high mass passive spirals occur mostly, but not exclusively, in groups, and can be central or satellite galaxies. The passive spiral group fraction of 74$\pm$15% is similar to that of the comparison sample of star forming galaxies at 61$\pm$7%. We find evidence for both quenching via internal structure and environment in our passive spiral sample, though some galaxies have evidence of neither. From this, we conclude no one mechanism is responsible for quenching star formation in passive spiral galaxies - rather, a mixture of mechanisms are required to produce the passive spiral distribution we see today., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use the energy-balance code MAGPHYS to determine stellar and dust masses, and dust corrected star-formation rates for over 200,000 GAMA galaxies, 170,000 G10-COSMOS galaxies and 200,000 3D-HST galaxies. Our values agree well with previously reported measurements and constitute a representative and homogeneous dataset spanning a broad range in stellar mass (10^8---10^12 Msol), dust mass (10^6---10^9 Msol), and star-formation rates (0.01---100 Msol per yr), and over a broad redshift range (0.0 < z < 5.0). We combine these data to measure the cosmic star-formation history (CSFH), the stellar-mass density (SMD), and the dust-mass density (DMD) over a 12 Gyr timeline. The data mostly agree with previous estimates, where they exist, and provide a quasi-homogeneous dataset using consistent mass and star-formation estimators with consistent underlying assumptions over the full time range. As a consequence our formal errors are significantly reduced when compared to the historic literature. Integrating our cosmic star-formation history we precisely reproduce the stellar-mass density with an ISM replenishment factor of 0.50 +/- 0.07, consistent with our choice of Chabrier IMF plus some modest amount of stripped stellar mass. Exploring the cosmic dust density evolution, we find a gradual increase in dust density with lookback time. We build a simple phenomenological model from the CSFH to account for the dust mass evolution, and infer two key conclusions: (1) For every unit of stellar mass which is formed 0.0065---0.004 units of dust mass is also formed; (2) Over the history of the Universe approximately 90 to 95 per cent of all dust formed has been destroyed and/or ejected., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We model the triggering of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in galaxy clusters using the semi- analytic galaxy formation model SAGE (?). We prescribe triggering methods based on the ram pressure galaxies experience as they move throughout the intracluster medium, which is hypothesized to trigger star formation and AGN activity. The clustercentric radius and velocity distribution of the simulated active galaxies produced by these models are compared with that of AGN and galaxies with intense star formation from a sample of low-redshift, relaxed clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The ram pressure triggering model that best explains the clustercentric radius and velocity distribution of these observed galaxies has AGN and star formation triggered if $2.5\times10^{-14} < P_{ram} < 2.5\times10^{-13}$ Pa and $P_{ram} > 2P_{internal}$; this is consistent with expectations from hydrodynamical simulations of ram-pressure induced star formation. Our results show that ram pressure is likely to be an important mechanism for triggering star formation and AGN activity in clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. Observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory are used to examine the hot gas properties within a sample of 10 galaxy groups selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey's optical Friends-of-Friends group catalogue. Our groups have been screened to eliminate spurious and unrelaxed systems, and the effectiveness of this procedure is demonstrated by the detection of intergalactic hot gas in 80 per cent of our sample. However, we find that 9 of the 10 are X-ray underluminous by a mean factor of $\sim$4 compared to typical X-ray-selected samples. Consistent with this, the majority of our groups have gas fractions that are lower and gas entropies somewhat higher than those seen in typical X-ray-selected samples. Taipan is a multi-object spectroscopic galaxy survey starting in 2017 that will cover 2pi steradians over the southern sky, and obtain optical spectra for about two million galaxies out to z<0.4. Taipan will use the newly-refurbished 1.2m UK Schmidt Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory with the new TAIPAN instrument, which includes an innovative 'Starbugs' positioning system capable of rapidly and simultaneously deploying up to 150 spectroscopic fibres (and up to 300 with a proposed upgrade) over the 6-deg diameter focal plane, and a purpose-built spectrograph operating from 370 to 870nm with resolving power R>2000. The main scientific goals of Taipan are: (i) to measure the distance scale of the Universe (primarily governed by the local expansion rate, H_0) to 1% precision, and the structure growth rate of structure to 5%; (ii) to make the most extensive map yet constructed of the mass distribution and motions in the local Universe, using peculiar velocities based on improved Fundamental Plane distances, which will enable sensitive tests of gravitational physics; and (iii) to deliver a legacy sample of low-redshift galaxies as a unique laboratory for studying galaxy evolution as a function of mass and environment. The final survey, which will be completed within 5 years, will consist of a complete magnitude-limited sample (i<17) of about 1.2x10^6 galaxies, supplemented by an extension to higher redshifts and fainter magnitudes (i<18.1) of a luminous red galaxy sample of about 0.8x10^6 galaxies. Observations and data processing will be carried out remotely and in a fully-automated way, using a purpose-built automated 'virtual observer' software and an automated data reduction pipeline. We examine the HI-to-stellar mass ratio (HI fraction) for galaxies near filament backbones within the nearby Universe ($d <$ 181 Mpc). This work uses the 6 degree Field Galaxy Survey and the Discrete Persistent Structures Extractor to define the filamentary structure of the local cosmic web. HI spectral stacking of HI Parkes all sky survey observations yields the HI fraction for filament galaxies and a field control sample. The HI fraction is measured for different stellar masses and fifth nearest neighbour projected densities ($\Sigma_{5}$) to disentangle what influences cold gas in galaxies. For galaxies with stellar masses log($M_{\star}$) $<$ 11 M$_{\odot}$ in projected densities 0 $\leq$ $\Sigma_{5}$ $<$ 3 galaxies Mpc$^{-2}$, all HI fractions of galaxies near filaments are statistically indistinguishable from the control sample. Galaxies with stellar masses log($M_{\star}$) $\geq$ 11 M$_{\odot}$ have a systematically higher HI fraction near filaments than the control sample. The greatest difference is 0.75 dex, which is 5.5$\sigma$ difference at mean projected densities of 1.45 galaxies Mpc$^{-2}$. We suggest that this is evidence for massive galaxies accreting cold gas from the intrafilament medium that can replenish some HI gas. This supports cold mode accretion where filament galaxies with a large gravitational potential can draw gas from the large-scale structure., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures. Accepted in MNRAS

We present results from the 2D anisotropic Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) signal present in the final dataset from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We analyse the WiggleZ data in two ways: firstly using the full shape of the 2D correlation function and secondly focussing only on the position of the BAO peak in the reconstructed data set. When fitting for the full shape of the 2D correlation function we use a multipole expansion to compare with theory. When we use the reconstructed data we marginalise over the shape and just measure the position of the BAO peak, analysing the data in wedges separating the signal along the line of sight from that parallel to the line of sight. We verify our method with mock data and find the results to be free of bias or systematic offsets. We also redo the pre-reconstruction angle averaged (1D) WiggleZ BAO analysis with an improved covariance and present an updated result. The final results are presented in the form of $\Omega_c h^2$, $H(z)$, and $D_A(z)$ for three redshift bins with effective redshifts $z = 0.44$, $0.60$, and $0.73$. Within these bins and methodologies, we recover constraints between 5% and 22% error. Our cosmological constraints are consistent with Flat $\Lambda$CDM cosmology and agree with results from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS)., Comment: 18 pages, 18 figures. We present a pilot analysis of the influence of galaxy stellar mass and cluster environment on the probability of slow rotation in 22 central galaxies at mean redshift $z=0.07$. This includes new integral-field observations of 5 central galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, observed with the SPIRAL integral-field spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The composite sample presented here spans a wide range of stellar masses, $10.9<$log(M$_{*}/$M$_{\odot})<12.0$, and are embedded in halos ranging from groups to clusters, $12.9<$log(M$_{200}/$M$_{\odot})<15.6$. We find a mean probability of slow rotation in our sample of P(SR)$=54\pm7$percent. Our results show an increasing probability of slow rotation in central galaxies with increasing stellar mass. However, when we examine the dependence of slow rotation on host cluster halo mass we do not see a significant relationship. We also explore the influence of cluster dominance on slow rotation in central galaxies. Clusters with low dominance are associated with dynamically younger systems. We find that cluster dominance has no significant effect on the probability of slow rotation in central galaxies. There exist conflicting observations on whether or not the environment of broad and narrow line AGN differ and this consequently questions the validity of the AGN unification model. The high spectroscopic completeness of the GAMA survey makes it ideal for a comprehensive analysis of the close environment of galaxies. To exploit this, and conduct a comparative analysis of the environment of broad and narrow line AGN within GAMA, we use a double-Gaussian emission line fitting method to model the more complex line profiles associated with broad line AGN. We select 209 type 1 (i.e., unobscured), 464 type 1.5-1.9 (partially obscured), and 281 type 2 (obscured) AGN within the GAMA II database. Comparing the fractions of these with neighbouring galaxies out to a pair separation of $350\,\text{kpc }h^{-1}$ and $\Delta z < 0.012$ shows no difference between AGN of different type, except at separations less than $20\,\text{kpc }h^{-1}$ where our observations suggest an excess of type 2 AGN in close pairs. We analyse the properties of the galaxies neighbouring our AGN and find no significant differences in colour or the star formation activity of these galaxies. Further to this we find that $\Sigma_5$ is also consistent between broad and narrow line AGN. We have investigated the effect of group environment on residual star formation in galaxies, using Galex NUV galaxy photometry with the SDSS group catalogue of Yang et al. (2007). We compared the (NUV $- r$) colours of grouped and non-grouped galaxies, and find a significant increase in the fraction of red sequence galaxies with blue (NUV $- r$) colours outside of groups. When comparing galaxies in mass matched samples of satellite (non-central), and non-grouped galaxies, we found a > 4{\sigma} difference in the distribution of (NUV $- r$) colours, and an (NUV $- r$) blue fraction $> 3{\sigma}$ higher outside groups. A comparison of satellite and non-grouped samples has found the NUV fraction is a factor of $\sim2$ lower for satellite galaxies between $10^{10.5}M_{\bigodot}$ and $10^{10.7}M_{\bigodot}$, showing that higher mass galaxies are more able to form stars when not influenced by a group potential. There was a higher (NUV $- r$) blue fraction of galaxies with lower Sersic indices (n < 3) outside of groups, not seen in the satellite sample. We have used stellar population models of Bruzual & Charlot (2003) with multiple burst, or exponentially declining star formation histories to find that many of the (NUV $- r$) blue non-grouped galaxies can be explained by a slow ($\sim 2$ Gyr) decay of star formation, compared to the satellite galaxies. We suggest that taken together, the difference in (NUV $- r$) colours between samples can be explained by a population of secularly evolving, non-grouped galaxies, where star formation declines slowly. We have identified a population of passive spiral galaxies from photometry and integral field spectroscopy. We selected z<0.035 spiral galaxies that have WISE colours consistent with little mid-infrared emission from warm dust. Matched aperture photometry of 51 spiral galaxies in ultraviolet, optical and mid-infrared show these galaxies have colours consistent with passive galaxies. Six galaxies form a spectroscopic pilot study and were observed using the Wide-Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) to check for signs of nebular emission from star formation. We see no evidence of substantial nebular emission found in previous red spiral samples. These six galaxies possess absorption-line spectra with 4000\AA\ breaks consistent with an average luminosity-weighted age of 2.3 Gyr. Our photometric and IFU spectroscopic observations confirm the existence of a population of local passive spiral galaxies, implying that transformation into early-type morphologies is not required for the quenching of star formation., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present radio Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) luminosity functions over the redshift range 0.005 < z < 0.75. The sample from which the luminosity functions are constructed is an optical spectroscopic survey of radio galaxies, identified from matched Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-cm survey (FIRST) sources and Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images.The radio AGN are separated into Low Excitation Radio Galaxies (LERGs) and High Excitation Radio Galaxies (HERGs) using the optical spectra. We derive radio luminosity functions for LERGs and HERGs separately in the three redshift bins (0.005 < z < 0.3, 0.3 < z < 0.5 and 0.5 < z <0.75). The radio luminosity functions can be well described by a double power-law. Assuming this double power-law shape the LERG population displays little or no evolution over this redshift range evolving as ~$(1+z)^{0.06}$ assuming pure density evolution or ~ $(1+z)^{0.46}$ assuming pure luminosity evolution. In contrast, the HERG population evolves more rapidly, best fitted by ~$(1+z)^{2.93}$ assuming a double power-law shape and pure density evolution. If a pure luminosity model is assumed the best fitting HERG evolution is parameterised by ~$(1+z)^{7.41}$. The characteristic break in the radio luminosity function occurs at a significantly higher power (~1 dex) for the HERG population in comparison to the LERGs. We present the first detailed integral field spectroscopy study of nine central void galaxies with M*>10^10 Msun using the Wide Field Spectrograph (WiFeS) to determine how a range of assembly histories manifest themselves in the current day Universe. While the majority of these galaxies are evolving secularly, we find a range of morphologies, merger histories and stellar population distributions, though similarly low Halpha-derived star formation rates (<1 Msun/yr). Two of our nine galaxies host AGNs, and two have kinematic disruptions to their gas that are not seen in their stellar component. Most massive void galaxies are red and discy, which we attribute to a lack of major mergers. Some have disturbed morphologies and may be in the process of evolving to early-type thanks to ongoing minor mergers at present times, likely fed by tendrils leading off filaments. The diversity in our small galaxy sample, despite being of similar mass and environment means that these galaxies are still assembling at present day, with minor mergers playing an important role in their evolution. We compare our sample to a mass and magnitude-matched sample of field galaxies, using data from the Sydney-AAO Multi-object Integral field spectrograph (SAMI) galaxy survey. We find that despite environmental differences, galaxies of mass M*>10^10 Msun have similarly low star formation rates (<3 Msun/yr). The lack of distinction between the star formation rates of the void and field environments points to quenching of massive galaxies being a largely mass-related effect., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using a sample of ~410 000 galaxies to depth I_AB = 24 over 8.26 deg^2 in the Bootes field (~10 times larger than z~1 luminosity function studies in the prior literature), we have accurately measured the evolving B-band luminosity function of red galaxies at z<1.2 and blue galaxies at z<1.0. In addition to the large sample size, we utilise photometry that accounts for the varying angular sizes of galaxies, photometric redshifts verified with spectroscopy, and absolute magnitudes that should have very small random and systematic errors. Our results are consistent with the migration of galaxies from the blue cloud to the red sequence as they cease to form stars, and with downsizing in which more massive and luminous blue galaxies cease star formation earlier than fainter less massive ones. Comparing the observed fading of red galaxies with that to be expected from passive evolution alone, we find that the stellar mass contained within the red galaxy population has increased by a factor of ~3.6 from z~1.1 to z~0.1. The bright end of the red galaxy luminosity function fades with decreasing redshift, the rate of fading increasing from ~0.2 mag per unit redshift at z = 1.0 to ~0.8 at z = 0.2. The overall decrease in luminosity implies that the stellar mass in individual highly luminous red galaxies increased by a factor of ~2.2 from z = 1.1 to z = 0.1., Comment: 21 pages, 21 figures

We present the GAMA Panchromatic Data Release (PDR) constituting over 230deg$^2$ of imaging with photometry in 21 bands extending from the far-UV to the far-IR. These data complement our spectroscopic campaign of over 300k galaxies, and are compiled from observations with a variety of facilities including: GALEX, SDSS, VISTA, WISE, and Herschel, with the GAMA regions currently being surveyed by VST and scheduled for observations by ASKAP. These data are processed to a common astrometric solution, from which photometry is derived for 221,373 galaxies with r<19.8 mag. Online tools are provided to access and download data cutouts, or the full mosaics of the GAMA regions in each band. We focus, in particular, on the reduction and analysis of the VISTA VIKING data, and compare to earlier datasets (i.e., 2MASS and UKIDSS) before combining the data and examining its integrity. Having derived the 21-band photometric catalogue we proceed to fit the data using the energy balance code MAGPHYS. These measurements are then used to obtain the first fully empirical measurement of the 0.1-500$\mu$m energy output of the Universe. Exploring the Cosmic Spectral Energy Distribution (CSED) across three time-intervals (0.3-1.1Gyr, 1.1-1.8~Gyr and 1.8---2.4~Gyr), we find that the Universe is currently generating $(1.5 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$, down from $(2.5 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{35}$ h$_{70}$ W Mpc$^{-3}$ 2.3~Gyr ago. More importantly, we identify significant and smooth evolution in the integrated photon escape fraction at all wavelengths, with the UV escape fraction increasing from 27(18)% at z=0.18 in NUV(FUV) to 34(23)% at z=0.06. The GAMA PDR will allow for detailed studies of the energy production and outputs of individual systems, sub-populations, and representative galaxy samples at $z<0.5$. We explore trends in galaxy properties with Mpc-scale structures using catalogues of environment and large scale structure from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Existing GAMA catalogues of large scale structure, group and pair membership allow us to construct galaxy stellar mass functions for different environmental types. To avoid simply extracting the known underlying correlations between galaxy properties and stellar mass, we create a mass matched sample of galaxies with stellar masses between $9.5 \leq \log{M_*/h^{-2} M_{\odot}} \leq 11$ for each environmental population. Using these samples, we show that mass normalised galaxies in different large scale environments have similar energy outputs, $u-r$ colours, luminosities, and morphologies. Extending our analysis to group and pair environments, we show galaxies that are not in groups or pairs exhibit similar characteristics to each other regardless of broader environment. For our mass controlled sample, we fail to see a strong dependence of S\'{e}rsic index or galaxy luminosity on halo mass, but do find that it correlates very strongly with colour. Repeating our analysis for galaxies that have not been mass controlled introduces and amplifies trends in the properties of galaxies in pairs, groups, and large scale structure, indicating that stellar mass is the most important predictor of the galaxy properties we examine, as opposed to environmental classifications., Comment: 22 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS on May 20, 2015

We have determined K-band luminosity functions for 13,325 local Universe galaxies as a function of morphology and color (for K_tot <= 10.75). Our sample is drawn from the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog, with all sample galaxies having measured morphologies and distances (including 4,219 archival redshift-independent distances). The luminosity function for our total sample is in good agreement with previous works, but is relatively smooth at faint magnitudes (due to bulk flow distance corrections). We investigated the differences due to morphological and color-selection using 5,417 sample galaxies with NASA Sloan Atlas optical colors and find that red spirals comprise 20 to 50% of all spirals with -25 <= M_K < -20. Fainter than M_K = -24, red spirals are as common as early-types, explaining the different faint end slopes (alpha = -0.87 and -1.00 for red and early-types, respectively). While we find red spirals comprise more than 50% of all M_K < -25 spiral galaxies, they do not dominate the bright end of the overall red galaxy luminosity function, which is dominated by early-type galaxies. The brightest red spirals have ongoing star formation and those without are frequently misclassified as early-types. The faintest ones have an appearance and Sersic indices consistent with faded disks, rather than true bulge dominated galaxies.

We describe an accurate new method for determining absolute magnitudes, and hence also K-corrections, which is simpler than most previous methods, being based on a quadratic function of just one suitably chosen observed color. The method relies on the extensive and accurate new set of 129 empirical galaxy template SEDs from Brown et al. (2014). A key advantage of our method is that we can reliably estimate random errors in computed absolute magnitudes due to galaxy diversity, photometric error and redshift error. We derive K-corrections for the five Sloan Digital Sky Survey filters and provide parameter tables for use by the astronomical community. Using the New York Value-Added Galaxy Catalog we compare our K-corrections with those from kcorrect. Our K-corrections produce absolute magnitudes that are generally in good agreement with kcorrect. Absolute g, r, i, z-band magnitudes differ by less than 0.02 mag, and those in the u-band by ~0.04 mag. The evolution of rest-frame colors as a function of redshift is better behaved using our method, with relatively few galaxies being assigned anomalously red colors and a tight red sequence being observed across the whole 0.0 < z < 0.5 redshift range., Comment: 23 pages, 16 figures

We present clustering measurements and halo masses of star forming galaxies at 0.2 < z < 1.0. After excluding AGN, we construct a sample of 22553 24 {\mu}m sources selected from 8.42 deg^2 of the Spitzer MIPS AGN and Galaxy Evolution Survey of Bo\"otes. Mid-infrared imaging allows us to observe galaxies with the highest star formation rates (SFRs), less biased by dust obscuration afflicting the optical bands. We find that the galaxies with the highest SFRs have optical colors which are redder than typical blue cloud galaxies, with many residing within the green valley. At z > 0.4 our sample is dominated by luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs, L_TIR > 10^11 Lsun) and is comprised entirely of LIRGs and ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, L_TIR > 10^12 Lsun) at z > 0.6. We observe weak clustering of r_0 = 3-6 Mpc/h for almost all of our star forming samples. We find that the clustering and halo mass depend on L_TIR at all redshifts, where galaxies with higher L_TIR (hence higher SFRs) have stronger clustering. Galaxies with the highest SFRs at each redshift typically reside within dark matter halos of M_halo ~ 10^12.9 Msun/h. This is consistent with a transitional halo mass, above which star formation is largely truncated, although we cannot exclude that ULIRGs reside within higher mass halos. By modeling the clustering evolution of halos, we connect our star forming galaxy samples to their local descendants. Most star forming galaxies at z < 1.0 are the progenitors of L < 2.5L* blue galaxies in the local universe, but star forming galaxies with the highest SFRs (L_TIR >10^11.7 Lsun) at 0.6

We present the mid-infrared (IR) star formation rates of 245 X-ray selected, nearby (z<0.1) brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). A homogeneous and volume limited sample of BCGs was created by X-ray selecting clusters with L_x > 1x10^44 erg/s. The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) AllWISE Data Release provides the first measurement of the 12 micron star formation indicator for all BCGs in the nearby Universe. Perseus A and Cygnus A are the only galaxies in our sample to have star formation rates of > 40 M_sol/yr, indicating that these two galaxies are highly unusual at current times. Stellar populations of 99 +/- 0.6 % of local BCGs are (approximately) passively evolving, with star formation rates of <10 M_sol/yr. We present the results of a Keck-ESI spectroscopic study of six dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies in the Perseus Cluster core, and confirm two dwarfs as cluster members for the first time. All six dEs follow the size-magnitude relation for dE/dSph galaxies. Central velocity dispersions are measured for three Perseus dwarfs in our sample, and all lie on the $\sigma$-luminosity relation for early-type, pressure supported systems. We furthermore examine SA 0426-002, a unique dE in our sample with a bar-like morphology surrounded by low-surface brightness wings/lobes ($\mu_{B} = 27$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$). Given its morphology, velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{0} = 33.9 \pm 6.1 $ km s$^{-1}$), velocity relative to the brightest cluster galaxy NGC 1275 (2711 km s$^{-1}$), size ($R_{e} =2.1 \pm 0.10$ kpc), and Sersic index ($n= 1.2 \pm 0.02$), we hypothesise the dwarf has morphologically transformed from a low mass disc to dE via harassment. The low-surface brightness lobes can be explained as a ring feature, with the bar formation triggered by tidal interactions via speed encounters with Perseus Cluster members. Alongside spiral structure found in dEs in Fornax and Virgo, SA 0426-002 provides crucial evidence that a fraction of bright dEs have a disc infall origin, and are not part of the primordial cluster population., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present integral field spectroscopy of 10 early-type galaxies in the nearby, low-mass, Fornax cluster, from which we derive spatially resolved stellar kinematics. Based on the morphologies of their stellar velocity maps we classify 2/10 galaxies as slow rotators, with the remaining 8 galaxies fast rotators. Supplementing our integral field observations with morphological and kinematic data from the literature, we analyse the `kinematic' type of all 30 galaxies in the Fornax cluster brighter than M_K = -21.5 mag (M_* ~ 6 x 10^9 M_sun). Our sample's slow rotator fraction within one virial radius is 7(^+4_-6) per cent. 13(^+8_-6} per cent of the early-type galaxies are slow rotators, consistent with the observed fraction in other galaxy aggregates. The fraction of slow rotators in Fornax varies with cluster-centric radius, rising to 16(^+11_-8) per cent of all kinematic types within the central 0.2 virial radii, from 0 per cent in the cluster outskirts. We find that, even in mass-matched samples of slow and fast rotators, slow rotators are found preferentially at higher projected environmental density than fast rotators. This demonstrates that dynamical friction alone cannot be responsible for the differing distributions of slow and fast rotators. For dynamical friction to play a significant role, slow rotators must reside in higher mass sub-halos than fast rotators and/or form in the centres of groups before being accreted on to the cluster., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures. Based on data from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, we report on the discovery of structures that we refer to as `tendrils' of galaxies: coherent, thin chains of galaxies that are rooted in filaments and terminate in neighbouring filaments or voids. On average, tendrils contain 6 galaxies and span 10 $h^{-1}$ Mpc. We use the so-called line correlation function to prove that tendrils represent real structures rather than accidental alignments. We show that voids found in the SDSS-DR7 survey that overlap with GAMA regions contain a large number of galaxies, primarily belonging to tendrils. This implies that void sizes are strongly dependent on the number density and sensitivity limits of a survey. We caution that galaxies in low density regions, that may be defined as `void galaxies,' will have local galaxy number densities that depend on such observational limits and are likely higher than can be directly measured., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters on Tue 28 Jan 2014

We report the morphological classification of 3727 galaxies from the Galaxy and Mass Assembly survey with M_r < -17.4 mag and in the redshift range 0.025 < z < 0.06 (2.1 x 10^5 Mpc^3 ) into E, S0-Sa, SB0-SBa, Sab-Scd, SBab-SBcd, Sd-Irr and little blue spheroid classes. Approximately 70% of galaxies in our sample are disk dominated systems, with the remaining ~30% spheroid dominated. We establish the robustness of our classifications, and use them to derive morphological-type luminosity functions and luminosity densities in the ugrizYJHK passbands, improving on prior studies that split by global colour or light profile shape alone. We find that the total galaxy luminosity function is best described by a double-Schechter function while the constituent morphological-type luminosity functions are well described by a single-Schechter function. These data are also used to derive the star-formation rate densities for each Hubble class, and the attenuated and unattenuated (corrected for dust) cosmic spectral energy distributions, i.e., the instantaneous energy production budget. While the observed optical/near-IR energy budget is dominated 58:42 by galaxies with a significant spheroidal component, the actual energy production rate is reversed, i.e., the combined disk dominated populations generate ~1.3x as much energy as the spheroid dominated populations. We present significant improvements in cosmic distance measurements from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, achieved by applying the reconstruction of the baryonic acoustic feature technique. We show using both data and simulations that the reconstruction technique can often be effective despite patchiness of the survey, significant edge effects and shot-noise. We investigate three redshift bins in the redshift range 0.2<$z$<1, and in all three find improvement after reconstruction in the detection of the baryonic acoustic feature and its usage as a standard ruler. We measure model independent distance measures $D_{\mathrm V}(r_{\mathrm s}^\mathrm{fid}/r_{\mathrm s})$ of 1716 $\pm$ 83 Mpc, 2221 $\pm$ 101 Mpc, 2516 $\pm$ 86 Mpc (68% CL) at effective redshifts z = 0.44, 0.6, 0.73, respectively, where $D_{\mathrm V}$ is the volume-average-distance, and $r_{\mathrm s}$ is the sound horizon at the end of the baryon drag epoch. These significantly improved 4.8, 4.5 and 3.4 percent accuracy measurements are equivalent to those expected from surveys with up to 2.5 times the volume of WiggleZ. These measurements are fully consistent with cosmologies allowed by the analyses of the Planck Collaboration and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.We provide the $D_{\mathrm V}(r_{\mathrm s}^\mathrm{fid}/r_{\mathrm s})$ posterior probability distributions and their covariances. When combining these measurements with temperature fluctuations measurements of Planck, the polarization of WMAP9, and the 6dF Galaxy Survey baryonic acoustic feature, we do not detect deviations from a flat LCDM model. Assuming this model we constrain the current expansion rate to $H_0$ = 67.15 $\pm$ 0.98 kms$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$. Allowing the equation of state of dark energy to vary we obtain $w_\mathrm{DE}$ = -1.080 $\pm$ 0.135. When assuming a curved LCDM model we obtain a curvature value of $\Omega_{\mathrm K}$ = -0.0043 $\pm$ 0.0047., Comment: 20 double column pages, 10 figures, 5 tables

From a volume limited sample of 45,542 galaxies and 6,000 groups with $z \leq 0.213$ we use an adapted minimal spanning tree algorithm to identify and classify large scale structures within the Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey. Using galaxy groups, we identify 643 filaments across the three equatorial GAMA fields that span up to 200 $h^{-1}$ Mpc in length, each with an average of 8 groups within them. By analysing galaxies not belonging to groups we identify a secondary population of smaller coherent structures composed entirely of galaxies, dubbed `tendrils' that appear to link filaments together, or penetrate into voids, generally measuring around 10 $h^{-1}$ Mpc in length and containing on average 6 galaxies. Finally we are also able to identify a population of isolated void galaxies. By running this algorithm on GAMA mock galaxy catalogues we compare the characteristics of large scale structure between observed and mock data; finding that mock filaments reproduce observed ones extremely well.
