Abstract

Time of Flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) scanners demand electronics that are power-efficient, low-noise, cost-effective, and possess a large bandwidth. Recent developments have demonstrated sub-100 ps time resolution with elevated power consumption per channel, rendering this unfeasible to build a scanner. In this work, we evaluate the performance for the TOF-PET of the FastIC front-end using different scintillators and silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). FastIC is an eight-channel application specific integrated circuit developed in CMOS 65 nm capable of measuring the energy and the arrival time of a detected pulse with 12 mW per channel. Using Hamamatsu SiPMs (S13360-3050PE) coupled to LSO:Ce:0.2%Ca crystals of $2\times 2\times $ 3 mm3 and LYSO:Ce:0.2%Ca of $3.13\times 3.13\times $ 20 mm3, we measured a coincidence time resolution (CTR) of ( $95~\pm ~3$ ) and $156~\pm ~4$ ) ps full width half maximum (FWHM), respectively. With Fondazione Bruno Kessler NUV-HD LF2 M0 SiPMs coupled to the same crystals, we obtained a CTR of ( $76~\pm ~2$ ) and ( $127~\pm ~3$ ) ps FWHM. We employed FastIC with a TlCl pure Cherenkov emitter, demonstrating time resolutions comparable to those achieved with the high-power-consuming electronics. These findings shows that the FastIC represents a cost-effective alternative that can significantly enhance the time resolution of the current TOF-PET systems while maintaining low power consumption.

Abstract

After evaluating and optimizing several multi-channel photomultiplier tubes and small low cost side-window photomultiplier tubes we have devised two methods which, depending on the particular application, are viable readout systems for a small to moderate number of fibers. The new 16 channel Hamamatsu R4760 photomultiplier tube offers, when timing information is utilized, the lowest near neighbor cross-talk (|is less than~0.05%). The 931B side-window photomultiplier which is 30 mm in diameter is also a good choice for moderate size multi-fiber readout when no cross-talk can be tolerated.

Abstract

The U.S. Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) now operates with 1.2 MW of beam power on target with the nearterm goal of delivering 1.4 MW and a longer-term goal of delivering >2 MW required by the planned Proton Power Upgrade (PPU) and Second Target Station (STS) projects. In early 2018 we plan to replace the entire 2.5 MeV injector configuration which includes the ion source, the Low Energy Beam Transport (LEBT) and the Radio Frequency Quadrupole accelerator (RFQ) with one which is currently being tested on a research accelerator called the Beam Test Facility (BTF) located at the SNS facility. This report first provides a description of the new injector: the ion source and the cage enclosure, the new LEBT support structure and the new RFQ. Since fall of 2016, this system has been tested extensively with regard to output beam current, beam persistence, emittance and energy. The results of these experiments employing both internal and external antenna ion sources will be summarized here showing the system to be capable of supporting SNS 1.4 MW operations with a significant margin as well as potentially meeting facility upgrade requirements. This represents a significant performance upgrade over the current SNS front end system with the compromised RFQ and will replace that system in early 2018. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The U.S. Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) now operates with 1.2 MW of beam power on target with the nearterm goal of delivering 1.4 MW and a longer-term goal of delivering > 2 MW to support a planned second target station. Presently, H- beam pulses (50-60 mA, 1 ms, 60 Hz) from an RF-driven, Cs-enhanced, multi-cusp ion source are first accelerated to 2.5 MeV by a Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator, injected into a ~1 GeV linac, compressed to <1μs in an accumulator ring and ultimately delivered to a liquid mercury target for pulsed neutron production. In recent years concerns about the RFQ performance has motivated the procurement of a new RFQ and the creation of a Beam Test Facility (BTF) to allow off-line testing. The purpose of the BTF is to first validate performance of the new RFQ before installing it in place of the existing RFQ and later to serve as a stand-alone 2.5 MeV research accelerator employing the original SNS RFQ. After validating the new RFQ with respect to energy, emittance and transmission, the initial applications of the BTF will be to conduct 6D beam dynamic studies, develop & demonstrate ion sources capable of meeting the current and future requirements of the SNS, and contribute to neutron moderator development. This report provides a facility update, description of the BTF ion source systems as well as a discussion of the first LEBT and RFQ beam current measurements performed at the BTF. Abstract

Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) of turbulent flow and heat transfer requires that most of the energy-containing length and time scales must be accurately captured. The spatial resolution can be augmented in two complementary ways, i.e. either the grid spacing has to be reduced, by refining the computational mesh, or a more accurate spatial approximation should be used. In this work we present our approach for the development of a fourth-order, compact finite volume scheme for the DNS of incompressible turbulent flow and heat transfer. The numerical method is fourth order accurate, but it is shown that a further increase of accuracy does not represent a difficult task, and can be accomplished in a modular way. A staggered grid arrangement is employed, which presents well-known advantages concerning properties conservation and absence of unphysical pressure oscillations, of paramount importance in DNS. In this paper, after a concise description of the method, we present several test cases, which illustrate the main characteristics and capabilities of the proposed methodology.

Abstract

The U.S. Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) now operates with ~1 MW of beam power to target with the near-term goal of delivering 1.4 MW. Plans are being considered to incorporate a second target station into the facility which will require ~2.8 MW of beam power. Presently, H- beam pulses (~1 ms, 60 Hz) are produced by an RF-driven, Cs-enhanced, multi-cusp ion source which injects beam into an RFQ (Radio Frequency Quadrupole) accelerator that, in turn, feeds the SNS Linac. Currently the source/RFQ system delivers ~35 mA of pulsed current to the linac which is mostly sufficient for 1.4 MW operations while ~50 mA are needed for the second target station upgrade. This paper provides a look forward for the SNS by providing (i) the present and future SNS source/RFQ beam requirements and our plans to achieve these, (ii) a description and status of the external antenna ion source being developed for the replacement of the current internal antenna ion source, and (iii) a description and status of the newly constructed RFQ test facility. Abstract

In this paper, we present the results from Direct Numerical Simulations of turbulent, incompressible flow through a square duct, with an imposed temperature difference between two opposite walls, while the other two walls are assumed perfectly insulated. The mean flow is sustained by an imposed, mean pressure gradient. The most interesting feature, characterizing this geometry, consists in the presence of turbulence-sustained mean secondary motions in the cross-flow plane. In this study, we focus on weak turbulence, in that the Reynolds number, based on bulk velocity and hydraulic diameter, is about 4450. Our results indicate that secondary motions do not affect dramatically the global parameters, like friction factor and Nusselt number, in comparison with the plane-channel flow. This issue is investigated by looking at the distribution of the various contributions to the total heat flux, with particular attention to the mean convective term, which does not appear in the plane channel flow., Presented at AFOSR International Conference on DNS/LES (3rd) held at Univ. of Texas, Arlington, TX on 5-9 Aug 2001. Abstract

Quadrilateral and triangular elements with curved edges are developed in the framework of spectral, discontinuous, hybrid control-volume/finite-element method for elliptic problems. In order to accommodate hybrid meshes, encompassing both triangular and quadrilateral elements, one single mapping is used. The scheme is applied to two-dimensional problems with discontinuous, anisotropic diffusion coefficients, and the exponential convergence of the method is verified in the presence of curved geometries.
