In this study, we calculate the nuclear matrix elements (NMEs) for the light neutrino-exchange mechanism of neutrinoless double beta $0\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{124}$Sn within the framework of the interacting nuclear shell model using the effective shell model Hamiltonian GCN5082. A novel method based on a nonclosure approach is employed, wherein for the intermediate nucleus $^{124}$Sb, effects of energy of 100 states for each $J_{k}^{\pi}$=$0^{+}$ to $11^{+}$ and $2^{-}$ to $9^{-}$ ($\Delta J_{k}$=1) are explicitly included in the NMEs calculation. Other common effects such as the finite size of nucleons, higher-order effects of nucleon currents, and short-range correlations (SRC) of nucleons are also taken into account. The extracted optimal closure energy is 2.9 MeV for a total NME of $^{124}$Sn $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, which is independent of different forms of SRC parametrizations. A comparison of NMEs and half-lives with some of the recent calculations is presented. Further, to gain a comprehensive understanding of the role of nuclear structure on the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay, the dependence of NMEs on spin-parity of the intermediate states, coupled spin-parity of neutrons and protons, and the number of intermediate states, is explored. It is observed that the inclusion of the effects of excitation energies of the intermediate nucleus yields more reliable NMEs. Efforts are underway to set up an underground laboratory in India for rare event studies like double beta decay, dark matter, etc. For such experiments, mitigation of radiation background is of paramount importance and understanding ambient background at the site, originating from the rock, is one of the crucial factors. With this motivation, the radiopurity studies of a rock sample from the potential laboratory site in the Aut tunnel of Himachal Pradesh (India) have been carried out using the TIFR low background experimental setup (TiLES). The concentration of $^{40}$K in Aut rock is observed to be lower by a factor of ~1000 as compared to the samples from BWH (Bodi West Hill), Tamil Nadu (India), current designated site for India-based Neutrino Observatory. The natural radioactive trace impurity $^{232}$Th is lower in the Aut rock, while $^{238}$U is somewhat higher than the BWH rock. Overall, the ambient gamma ray background at Aut is expected to be lower than the BWH, while ambient neutron background is expected to be similar. Further, to assess the neutron-induced long lived activity, fast neutron activation studies have been carried out on the both Aut and BWH rock samples at the Pelletron Linac Facility, Mumbai.

The study of neutrinoless double beta decay has attracted much attention as it can provide valuable information about the mass and the nature of the neutrino. The double beta decay (DBD) itself is also of interest in nuclear physics. While DBD has been observed in about a dozen nuclei, the positron double beta decay ($\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$/EC-$\beta^{+}$) continues to be an elusive. An important signature for $\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$ decay is the simultaneous emission of four 511 keV gamma rays and the coincident detection of these gamma rays can improve the measurement sensitivity. This paper presents an estimation of sensitivity for EC-$\beta^{+}$ and $\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$ employing coincidence measurement with two high purity Ge (HPGe) detectors. Simulations for coincident detection efficiency (${\epsilon}_c$) of 511 keV gamma rays with two HPGe detectors have been carried out using GEANT4 for different source geometries to optimize the mass efficiency product (M${\epsilon}_c$). The source of size $55\,mm \times 55\,mm \times 5\,mm$ (thickness) sandwiched between the front faces of the detectors were found to be optimal for 2 pairs of 511 keV gamma rays in the present detector setup. The coincident background is estimated at the sea level with moderate Pb shielding. With this setup, the sensitivity for T$_{1/2}$ measurement of EC-$\beta^{+}$ in $^{112}$Sn and $\beta^{+}\beta^{+}$ in $^{106}$Cd is estimated to be $\sim$10$^{19}$ - 10$^{20}$ y for 1y of measurement time., Comment: Presented at the 7th IUPAP International Conference on Women in Physics. 5 pages and 3 figures

One neutron stripping cross sections ($\sigma_{-1n}$) are measured in $^{9}$Be+$^{159}$Tb system in the energy range E$_{cm}$/V$_{B}$ $\sim$ 0.79 - 1.24 using offline gamma counting technique. The CRC model calculations including the ground state and the 2$^{+}$ resonance state of $^{8}$Be, carried out using the FRESCO code, give a reasonable description of the measured data. In addition, comparisons of reduced 1n-stripping cross sections- $\sigma_{red}$ with $^{9}$Be for different target nuclei (A $\sim$150-200), and $\sigma_{red}$ for $^{9}$Be, $^{6}$Li with $^{159}$Tb target are presented. While no strong target dependence is observed with $^{9}$Be projectile, $\sigma_{red}$($^{9}$Be) is significantly larger than that for $^{6}$Li, which is consistent with the Q-value for transfer reactions and breakup threshold energy of projectiles., Comment: 5 pages, 6 Figures

The single $\beta$ decay of $^{96}$Zr to the ground state of $^{96}$Nb is spin forbidden and poses a great experimental challenge. The $\beta$ decay of $^{96}$Zr can be studied via coincident detection of de-exciting gamma rays in $^{96}$Mo, which is the end product of $^{96}$Nb $\beta$ decay. Simulations are done with four HPGe detector setup (~33% relative efficiency each) to optimize the source configuration. In this work $\textit{n}$-transfer and incomplete fusion cross sections for $^{9}$Be + $^{197}$Au system are reported over a wide energy range, E$_{c.m.}$ $\approx$ 29-45 MeV. The experiment was carried out using activation technique and off-line gamma counting. The transfer process is found to be the dominant mode as compared to all other reaction channels. Detailed coupled reaction channel (CRC) calculations have been performed for $\textit{n}$-transfer stripping and pickup cross sections. The measured 1$\textit{n}$-stripping cross sections are explained with CRC calculations by including the ground state and the 2$^{+}$ resonance state (E = 3.03 MeV) of $^{8}$Be. The calculations for 1$\textit{n}$-pickup, including only the ground state of $^{10}$Be agree reasonably well with the measured cross sections, while it overpredicts the data at subbarrier energies. For a better insight into the role of projectile structure in the transfer process, a comprehensive analysis of 1$\textit{n}$-stripping reaction has been carried out for various weakly bound projectiles on $^{197}$Au target nucleus. The transfer cross sections scaled with the square of total radius of interacting nuclei show the expected Q-value dependence of 1$\textit{n}$-stripping channel for weakly bound stable projectiles.

This paper presents an analytical model to quantify the measured noise in a cryogenic bolometer readout circuit. The model includes the contributions from the bias resistors and sensor resistors, voltage and current noise of amplifier, and cable capacitance. The model parameters are empirically estimated using frequency domain analysis of the measured noise data of indigenously developed Neutron Transmutation Doped (NTD) Ge sensors. The model is shown to describe noise data for NTD Ge sensors over a wide range of resistances corresponding to temperatures in the range 20 - 70 mK. Relative contributions of different components are discussed and it is shown that the contribution to the overall noise from the differential amplifier at 300 K is the dominant source. It is observed that the amplifier flicker noise is significantly lower than that specified in the amplifier datasheet. The present study also indicates that a desirable value of resistance of NTD sensor (R$_{NTD}$) from noise considerations is $\leq$ 1 G$\Omega$ at $sim$ 20 mK., Comment: Replaced the existing time domain analysis with frequency domain analysis as that is a better representation of noise data. The transformation between the metallic ($\beta$) and semi-conducting ($\alpha$) allotropes of tin is still not well understood. The phase transition temperature stated in the literature, 286.2 K, seems to be inconsistent with recent calorimetric measurements. In this paper, this intriguing aspect has been explored in Sn and Sn-Cu (alloyed 0.5% Cu by weight) using temperature resolved synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements performed at the Indus-2 facility. Additionally, the $\alpha \rightleftharpoons \beta$ Sn transition has been recorded using in-situ heating/cooling experiments in a scanning electron microscope. Based on these measurements, a protocol has been suggested to reduce the formation of $\alpha$-Sn in potentially susceptible systems. This will be useful in experiments like TIN.TIN (The INdia-based TIN detector), which proposes to employ ~100 - 1000 kg of superconducting tin-based detectors to search for neutrinoless double beta decay in the isotope $^{124}$Sn., Comment: Accepted for publication in Scripta Materialia

To probe the role of the intrinsic structure of the projectile on sub-barrier fusion, measurement of fusion cross sections has been carried out in $^{9}$Be + $^{197}$Au system in the energy range E$_{c.m.}$/V$_B$ $\approx$ 0.82 to 1.16 using off-beam gamma counting method. Measured fusion excitation function has been analyzed in the framework of the coupled-channel approach using CCFULL code. It is observed that the coupled-channel calculations, including couplings to the inelastic state of the target and the first two states of the rotational band built on the ground state of the projectile, provide a very good description of the sub-barrier fusion data. At above barrier energies, the fusion cross section is found to be suppressed by $\approx$ 39(2)\% as compared to the coupled-channel prediction. A comparison of reduced excitation function of $^{9}$Be + $^{197}$Au with other $x$ + $^{197}$Au shows a larger enhancement for $^9$Be in the sub-barrier region amongst Z=2-5 weakly and tightly bound projectiles, which indicates the prominent role of the projectile deformation in addition to the weak binding., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. This paper reports the detailed noise characterization, investigation of various noise sources and its mitigation to improve the performance of a cryogenic bolometer detector. The noise spectrum has been measured for a sapphire bolometer test setup with indigenously developed NTD Ge sensor in the CFDR system at Mumbai. The effect of external noise, arising either from ground loops in the system or from the diagnostic and control electronics of the cryostat, on the performance of a cryogenic bolometer is assessed. A systematic comparison of the influence of different noise pickups on the bolometer resolution is also presented. The best-achieved resolution at 15mK is ~15 keV for heater pulses and appears to be mainly limited by the noise due to the pulse tube cryocooler.

We have studied neutron response of PARIS phoswich [LaBr$_3$(Ce)-NaI(Tl)] detector which is being developed for measuring the high energy (E$_{\gamma}$ = 5 - 30 MeV) $\gamma$ rays emitted from the decay of highly collective states in atomic nuclei. The relative neutron detection efficiency of LaBr$_3$(Ce) and NaI(Tl) crystal of the phoswich detector has been measured using the time-of-flight (TOF) and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) technique in the energy range of E$_n$ = 1 - 9 MeV and compared with the GEANT4 based simulations. It has been found that for E$_n$ $>$ 3 MeV, $\sim$ 95 \% of neutrons have the primary interaction in the LaBr$_3$(Ce) crystal, indicating that a clear n-$\gamma$ separation can be achieved even at $\sim$15 cm flight path.

This paper reports the first observation of the Jacobi shape transition in $^{31}$P using high energy $\gamma$-rays from the decay of giant dipole resonance (GDR) as a probe. The measured GDR spectrum in the decay of $^{31}$P shows a distinct low energy component around 10 MeV, which is a clear signature of Corioli's splitting in a highly deformed rotating nucleus. Interestingly, a self-conjugate $\alpha$-cluster nucleus $^{28}$Si, populated at similar initial excitation energy and angular momentum, exhibits a vastly different GDR line shape. Even though the angular momentum of the compound nucleus $^{28}$Si is higher than the critical angular momentum required for the Jacobi shape transition, the GDR lineshape is akin to a prolate deformed nucleus. Considering the present results for $^{28}$Si and similar observation recently reported in $^{32}$S, it is proposed that the nuclear orbiting phenomenon exhibited by $\alpha$-cluster nuclei hinders the Jacobi shape transition. The present experimental results suggest a possibility to investigate the nuclear orbiting phenomenon using high energy $\gamma$-rays as a probe.

Exclusive measurements of high energy $\gamma$-rays are performed in $\rm ^{124}Ba$ and $\rm ^{136}Ba$ at the same excitation energy ($\sim$ 49 MeV), to study properties of the giant dipole resonance (GDR) over a wider $N/Z$ range. The high energy $\gamma$-rays are measured in coincidence with the multiplicity of low energy $\gamma$-rays to disentangle the effect of temperature ($T$) and angular momentum ($J$). The GDR parameters are extracted employing a simulated Monte Carlo statistical model analysis. The observed $\gamma$-ray spectra of $\rm ^{124}Ba$ can be explained with prolate deformation, whereas a single component Lorentzian function which corresponds to a spherical shape could explain the $\gamma$-ray spectra from $\rm ^{136}Ba$. The observed GDR width in $\rm ^{136}Ba$ is narrower compared to that of $\rm ^{124}Ba$. The statistical model best fit GDR cross sections are found to be in good agreement with the thermal shape fluctuation model (TSFM) calculations. Further, it is shown that the variation of GDR width with $T$ is well reproduced by the TSFM calculations over the temperature range of 1.1--1.7MeV., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay is a phenomenon of fundamental interest in particle physics. The decay rates of double beta decay transitions to the excited states can provide input for Nuclear Transition Matrix Element calculations for the relevant two neutrino double beta decay process. It can be useful as supplementary information for the calculation of Nuclear Transition Matrix Element for the neutrinoless double beta decay process. In the present work, double beta decay of $^{94}$Zr to the $2^{+}_{1}$ excited state of $^{94}$Mo at 871.1 keV is studied using a low background $\sim$ 230 cm$^3$ HPGe detector. No evidence of this decay was found with a 232 g.y exposure of natural Zirconium. The lower half-life limit obtained for the double beta decay of $\rm^{94}Zr$ to the $2^{+}_{1}$ excited state of $\rm^{94}Mo$ is $T_{1/2} (0\nu + 2\nu)> 3.4 \times 10^{19}$ y at 90% C.L., an improvement by a factor of $\sim$ 4 over the existing experimental limit at 90\% C.L. In order to understand the performance of the PARIS (Photon Array for the studies with Radioactive Ion and Stable beams) detector, detailed characterization of two individual phoswich (LaBr$_3$(Ce)-NaI(Tl)) elements has been carried out. The detector response is investigated over a wide range of $E_{\gamma}$ = 0.6 to 22.6 MeV using radioactive sources and employing $^{11}B(p,\gamma)$ reaction at $E_p$ = 163 keV and $E_p$ = 7.2 MeV. The linearity of energy response of the LaBr$_3$(Ce) detector is tested upto 22.6 MeV using three different voltage dividers. The data acquisition system using CAEN digitizers is set up and optimized to get the best energy and time resolution. The energy resolution of $\sim$ 2.1% at $E_\gamma$ = 22.6~MeV is measured for the configuration giving best linearity upto high energy. Time resolution of the phoswich detector is measured with a $^{60}$Co source after implementing CFD algorithm for the digitized pulses and is found to be excellent (FWHM $\sim$ 315~ps). In order to study the effect of count rate on detectors, the centroid position and width of the $E_{\gamma}$ = 835~keV peak were measured upto 220 kHz count rate. The measured efficiency data with radioactive sources are in good agreement with GEANT4 based simulations. The total energy spectrum after the add-back of energy signals in phoswich components is also presented., Comment: Accepted in JINST

The neutron flux at low energy ($E_n\leq15$ MeV) resulting from the radioactivity of the rock in the underground cavern of the India-based Neutrino Observatory is estimated using Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. The neutron production rate due to the spontaneous fission of $^{235, 238}$U, $^{232}$Th and ($\alpha, n$) interactions in the rock is determined employing the actual rock composition. It is been shown that the total flux is equivalent to a finite size cylindrical rock ($D=L=140$ cm) element. The energy integrated neutron flux thus obtained at the centre of the underground tunnel is 2.76 (0.47) $\times 10^{-6}\rm~n ~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$. The estimated neutron flux is of the same order ($\sim10^{-6}\rm~n ~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$)~as measured in other underground laboratories., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, minor corrections from v1

Radiation background studies pertaining to $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{124}$Sn have been carried out. A TiLES setup has been installed at TIFR for this purpose. Neutron-induced background is studied in the TIN.TIN detector materials using fast neutron activation technique. The neutron flux ($E_n\leq15$ MeV) resulting from SF and ($\alpha, n$) interactions for the rock in the INO cavern is estimated using MC simulations. Development of NTD Ge sensors has been initiated for low temperature (mK) thermometry in The India-based Tin detector (TIN.TIN). NTD Ge sensors are prepared by thermal neutron irradiation of device grade Ge samples at Dhruva reactor, BARC, Mumbai. Detailed measurements have been carried out in irradiated samples for estimating the carrier concentration and fast neutron induced defects. The Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy (PALS) measurements indicated monovacancy type defects for all irradiated samples, while Channeling studies employing RBS with 2 MeV alpha particles, revealed no significant defects in the samples exposed to fast neutron fluence of $\sim 4\times10^{16}/cm^2$. Both PALS and Channeling studies have shown that vacuum annealing at 600 $^\circ$C for $\sim2$ hours is sufficient to recover the damage in the irradiated samples, thereby making them suitable for the sensor development., Comment: 12 Pages, 3 figures

We report here a photoconductive material for THz generation and detection with sub-picosecond carrier lifetime made by C12 (Carbon) irradiation on commercially available semi-insulating (SI) GaAs. We are able to reduce the carrier lifetime of SI-GaAs down to sub-picosecond by irradiating it with various irradiation dosages of Carbon (C12) ions. With an increase of the irradiation dose from ~1012 /cm2 to ~1015 /cm2 the carrier lifetime of SI-GaAs monotonously decreases to 0.55 picosecond, resulting in strongly improved THz pulse detection compared with normal SI-GaAs.

Neutron-induced background has been studied in various components of the TIN.TIN detector, which is under development for the search of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in $\rm^{124}Sn$. Fast neutron flux $\sim10^{6}~n~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ covering a broad energy range ($ \sim0.1$ to $ \sim18$~MeV) was generated using $^{9}Be(p,n)^{9}B$ reaction. In addition, reactions with quasi-monoenergetic neutrons were also studied using $^{7}Li(p,n)^{7}Be$ reaction. Among the different cryogenic support structures studied, Teflon is found to be preferable compared to Torlon as there is no high energy gamma background ($E_\gamma >$ 1 MeV). Contribution of neutron-induced reactions in $\rm ^{nat, 124} $Sn from other Sn isotopes (A = 112 -- 122) in the energy region of interest, namely, around the $Q_{\beta\beta}$ of $\rm^{124}Sn$ ($E \sim$ 2.293 MeV), is also investigated., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, Accepted version (with minor revision)

It is important to identify and reduce the gamma radiation which can be a significant source of background for any double beta decay experiment. The TIN.TIN detector array, which is under development for the search of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in $^{124}$Sn, has the potential to utilize the hit multiplicity information to discriminate the gamma background from the events of interest. A program to develop low temperature (mK) sensors with neutron transmutation doped Ge for rare event studies with a cryogenic bolometer has been initiated. For this purpose, semiconductor grade Ge wafers are irradiated with thermal neutron flux from Dhruva reactor at BARC, Mumbai. Spectroscopic studies of irradiated samples have revealed that the environment of the capsule used for irradiating the sample leads to significant levels of $^{65}$Zn, $^{110}$Ag and $^{182}$Ta impurities, which can be reduced by chemical etching of approximately $\sim50 \mu$m thick surface layer. From measurements of the etched samples in the low background counting setup, activity due to trace impurities of $^{123}$Sb in bulk Ge is estimated to be $\sim$ 1 Bq/gm after irradiation. These estimates indicate that in order to use the NTD Ge sensors for rare event studies, a cool down period of $\sim$ 2 years would be necessary to reduce the radioactive background to $\le$ 1 mBq/gm., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

A high efficiency, low background counting setup has been made at TIFR consisting of a special HPGe detector ($\sim$ 70%) surrounded by a low activity copper+lead shield. Detailed measurements are performed with point and extended geometry sources to obtain a complete response of the detector. An effective model of the detector has been made with GEANT4 based Monte Carlo simulations which agrees with experimental data within 5%. This setup will be used for qualification and selection of radio-pure materials to be used in a cryogenic bolometer for the study of Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay in $^{124}$Sn as well as for other rare event studies. We demonstrate here an efficient THz source with low electrical power consumption. We have increased the maximum THz radiation power emitted from SI-GaAs based photoconductive emitters by two orders of magnitude. By irradiating the SI-GaAs substrate with Carbon-ions up to 2 micron deep, we have created lot of defects and decreased the life time of photo-excited carriers inside the substrate. Depending on the irradiation dose we find 1 to 2 orders of magnitude decrease in total current flowing in the substrate, resulting in subsequent decrease of heat dissipation in the antenna. This has resulted in increasing maximum cut-off of the applied voltage across Photo-Conductive Emitter (PCE) electrodes to operate the device without thermal breakdown from ~35 V to > 150 V for the 25 micron electrode gaps. At optimum operating conditions, carbon irradiated (10^14 ions/cm^2) PCEs give THz pulses with power about 100 times higher in comparison to the usual PCEs on SI-GaAs and electrical to THz power conversion efficiency has improved by a factor of ~ 800.

An earlier measurement on the 4$^+$ to 2$^+$ radiative transition in $^8$Be provided the first electromagnetic signature of its dumbbell-like shape. However, the large uncertainty in the measured cross section does not allow a stringent test of nuclear structure models. The present paper reports a more elaborate and precise measurement for this transition, via the radiative capture in the $^4$He+$^4$He reaction, improving the accuracy by about a factor of three. The {\it ab initio} calculations of the radiative transition strength with improved three-nucleon forces are also presented. Exclusive measurements of prompt $\gamma$-rays from the heavy-residues with various light charged particles in the $^7$Li + $^{198}$Pt system, at an energy near the Coulomb barrier (E/$V_b$ $\sim$ 1.6) are reported. Recent dynamic classical trajectory calculations, constrained by the measured fusion, $\alpha$ and $t$ capture cross-sections have been used to explain the excitation energy dependence of the residue cross-sections. These calculations distinctly illustrate a two step process, breakup followed by fusion in case of the capture of $t$ and $\alpha$ clusters; whereas for $^{6}$He + $p$ and $^{5}$He + $d$ configurations, massive transfer is inferred to be the dominant mechanism. Using TDPAD experiment and local spin density calculations, we have observed large 4d moments on isolated Mo atoms at substitutional and octahedral interstitial lattice sites in Yb metal, showing Curie-Weiss local susceptibility and Korringa like spin relaxation rate. As a surprising feature, despite strong hybridization with the Yb neighbours, interstitial Mo atoms show high moment stability with small Kondo temperature. While, magnetism of Mo, at substitutional site is consistent with Kondo type antiferromagnetic d-sp exchange interaction, we suggest that moment stability at the interstitial site is strongly influenced by ferromagnetic polarization of Yb-4f5d band electrons., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
