The purpose of this study was to assess the occurrence and prognosis of dental implant proximity or direct contact with the adjacent tooth and to evaluate the symptoms and complications in both the implant and the adjacent tooth. We then elaborate on treatment modalities and discuss the prevention of this phenomenon.This retrospective study was conducted based on the dental clinical and radiographic records of 43 patients with implant-tooth proximity of1.0 mm or direct implant-tooth contact. Multivariate Bayesian logistic regression was performed to examine the influence of individual variables on correcting major clinical variables.In the multivariate regression analysis, the rate of occurrence of tooth symptom decreased by about 95% with every increase of 1.0 mm distance between implant and tooth (odds ratio [OR] = 0.1, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.004-0.680, p = 0.024). In the case of implant-tooth root proximity in the anterior area, the OR of peri-implantitis occurrence was 30.4-fold greater than in posterior sites (OR = 30.4, 95% CI: 1.189-785.914, p = 0.040).Implant-tooth root proximity or direct implant-tooth contact is an iatrogenic factor that causes various complications, including devitalization of the adjacent tooth and peri-implantitis. Proactive prevention with surgical stents and intra-operative periapical radiographs is needed. If proximity or contact is found during surgery, repositioning of the fixture to the correct location is recommended in order to maintain peri-implant health and prevent complications.

Objective To investigate differences in the heritability of skeletodental characteristics between twin pairs with skeletal Class I and Class II malocclusions. Methods Forty Korean adult twin pairs were divided into Class I (C-I) group (0° ≤ angle between point A, nasion, and point B [ANB]) ≤ 4°; mean age, 40.7 years) and Class II (C-II) group (ANB > 4°; mean age, 43.0 years). Each group comprised 14 monozygotic and 6 dizygotic twin pairs. Thirty-three cephalometric variables were measured using lateral cephalograms and were categorized as the anteroposterior, vertical, dental, mandible, and cranial base characteristics. The ACE model was used to calculate heritability (A > 0.7, high heritability). Thereafter, principal component analysis (PCA) was performed. Results Twin pairs in C-I group exhibited high heritability values in the facial anteroposterior characteristics, inclination of the maxillary and mandibular incisors, mandibular body length, and cranial base angles. Twin pairs in C-II group showed high heritability values in vertical facial height, ramus height, effective mandibular length, and cranial base length. PCA extracted eight components with 88.3% in the C-I group and seven components with 91.0% cumulative explanation in the C-II group. Conclusions Differences in the heritability of skeletodental characteristics between twin pairs with skeletal Class I and II malocclusions might provide valuable information for growth prediction and treatment planning.

Background To reduce drug side effects and enhance their therapeutic effect compared with single drugs, drug combination research, combining two or more drugs, is highly important. Conducting in-vivo and in-vitro experiments on a vast number of drug combinations incurs astronomical time and cost. To reduce the number of combinations, researchers classify whether drug combinations are synergistic through in-silico methods. Since unstructured data, such as biomedical documents, include experimental types, methods, and results, it can be beneficial extracting features from documents to predict anti-cancer drug combination synergy. However, few studies predict anti-cancer drug combination synergy using document-extracted features. Results We present a novel approach for anti-cancer drug combination synergy prediction using document-based feature extraction. Our approach is divided into two steps. First, we extracted documents containing validated anti-cancer drug combinations and cell lines. Drug and cell line synonyms in the extracted documents were converted into representative words, and the documents were preprocessed by tokenization, lemmatization, and stopword removal. Second, the drug and cell line features were extracted from the preprocessed documents, and training data were constructed by feature concatenation. A prediction model based on deep and machine learning was created using the training data. The use of our features yielded higher results compared to the majority of published studies. Conclusions Using our prediction model, researchers can save time and cost on new anti-cancer drug combination discoveries. Additionally, since our feature extraction method does not require structuring of unstructured data, new data can be immediately applied without any data scalability issues.

The purpose of this study is to apply a machine learning approach to predict whether patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS) respond to the initial approach and clonazepam therapy based on clinical data. Among the patients with the primary type of BMS who visited the clinic from 2006 to 2015, those treated with the initial approach of detailed explanation regarding home care instruction and use of oral topical lubricants, or who were prescribed clonazepam for a minimum of 1 month were included in this study. The clinical data and treatment outcomes were collected from medical records. Extreme Gradient-Boosted Decision Trees was used for machine learning algorithms to construct prediction models. Accuracy of the prediction models was evaluated and feature importance calculated. The accuracy of the prediction models for the initial approach and clonazepam therapy was 67.6% and 67.4%, respectively. Aggravating factors and psychological distress were important features in the prediction model for the initial approach, and intensity of symptoms before administration was the important feature in the prediction model for clonazepam therapy. In conclusion, the analysis of treatment outcomes in patients with BMS using a machine learning approach showed meaningful results of clinical applicability.

Nitrous oxide, the least potent inhalation anesthetic, is widely used for conscious sedation. Recently, it has been reported that the occurrence of anesthetic-induced loss of consciousness decreases the interconnection between brain regions, resulting in brain network changes. However, few studies have investigated these changes in conscious sedation using nitrous oxide. Therefore, the present study aimed to use graph theory to analyze changes in brain networks during nitrous oxide sedation. Participants were 20 healthy volunteers (10 men and 10 women, 20–40 years old) with no history of systemic disease. We acquired electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings of 32 channels during baseline, nitrous oxide inhalation sedation, and recovery. EEG epochs from the baseline and the sedation state (50% nitrous oxide) were extracted and analyzed with the network connection parameters of graph theory. Analysis of 1/f dynamics, revealed a steeper slope while in the sedation state than during the baseline. Network connectivity parameters showed significant differences between the baseline and sedation state, in delta, alpha1, alpha2, and beta2 frequency bands. The most pronounced differences in functional distance during nitrous oxide sedation were observed in the alpha1 and alpha2 frequency bands. Change in 1/f dynamics indicates that changes in brain network systems occur during nitrous oxide administration. Changes in network parameters imply that nitrous oxide interferes with the efficiency of information integration in the frequency bands important for cognitive processes and attention tasks. Alteration of brain network during nitrous oxide administration may be associated to the sedative mechanism of nitrous oxide.

AIMS This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological significance of FGFR1 and c-MYC expression, particularly in relation to angiogenesis in clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC). METHODS AND RESULTS Immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in-situ hybridisation were conducted with tissue microarrays from 91 metastatic CCRCC patients who received VEGF receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGFR-TKIs). The expression of angiogenic molecules, FGFR1 and c-MYC, and tumoral vascular density (TVD) and mRNA expression and TVD of 533 CCRCCs in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) were analysed. FGFR1, pFGFR1 and c-MYC expression was observed in 29.1, 74.4 and 30.8% of tumours, respectively. FGFR1high was an independent worse prognostic factor for overall (HR = 1.871, P = 0.032) and progression-free (HR = 1.976, P = 0.016) survival. FGFR1high was significantly related to VEGFR-TKI responsiveness (P = 0.011). The purpose of this study was to analyze photoplethysmographic waveforms from pulse oximeter using raw data of red and infrared light and investigate the reference values of parameters (Height, Width50, Maximum slope, Minimum slope, Area) for evaluating pulpal blood flow in maxillary central incisors with normal pulp vitality in children. The study was performed in 30 pediatric patients, aged 7-16 years old, using pulse oximeter (MEKICS Co., Ltd, Korea) combined with a custom-made sensor. The raw data was obtained and recorded by custom-made software and analyzed by LabChart (v.7.3, ADInstruments, Germany) offline. In this study, we analyzed photoplethysmographic waveforms from pulse oximeter applied to maxillary central incisor for assessment of pulpal blood flow and suggested several reference values of young permanent maxillary central incisor with normal pulp. On average, the waveform of red light was higher, stiffer and wider than that of infrared light. Future studies about reference values for other normal teeth and the teeth with impaired pulp vitality are needed.

Peri-implantitis is similar to periodontitis in both symptoms and treatment; however, their level of similarity remains controversial. Here, we compared multiple cases of periodontitis and peri-implantitis through transcriptome and methylome profiling, and analyzed the effects of smoking as a typical risk factor. Human gingival tissues were obtained from 20 patients with periodontitis or peri-implantitis via periodontal surgical procedures. Total RNA and genomic DNA were isolated, and transcriptome and methylome datasets were generated. Comprehensive analysis of differential gene expression, DNA methylation, and protein-protein interactions indicated that periodontitis and peri-implantitis share biological similarities; however, hierarchical clustering between the two disease groups revealed distinct molecular characteristics. These differences might be related to structural differences in natural tooth-bone and implant-bone. Additionally, smoking differentially affected periodontitis and peri-implantitis in terms of host-defense mechanism impairment. Within the limitations of this study, the results provide evidence that peri-implantitis is distinct from periodontitis and that smoking potentially affects disease progression. Our study provides a foundation for the rational design of a large-scale study in the future for a more comprehensive analysis that includes microbiome and clinical data.

Despite the widespread use in clinical practice, little research has been done on mechanisms of sedation. In particular, little is known about the changes in the information processing of external stimuli in sedation. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of event-related potential (ERP) in auditory passive oddball paradigm when the sedation was induced by sevoflurane inhalation. Electroencephalography (EEG) measurements were obtained for each subject using 32-channel EEG recording devices. Sevoflurane was administered at an initial concentration of 0.8 vol% to induce sedative state. Auditory stimulation based on the passive oddball paradigm was delivered to the subject via an earphone before and after sevoflurane administration. After ERP was extracted from the measured EEG, the topographic distribution of ERP, the temporal changes of ERP in each channel, and the statistical difference in ERP between awake and sedation were analyzed. In the awake state, P300 was observed at 320-360 ms latency, and P300 was concentrated in the frontal and central area. P300 amplitude was significantly decreased in sedation compared to awake. Sevoflurane-induced sedation caused a decrease in P300 amplitude. This result may reflect the weakening of the cognitive function governing attentional process and stimuli discrimination during sedation.

Objectives: The aim of this paper was evaluating the ratios of electrical impedance measurements reported in previous studies through a correlation analysis in order to explicit it as the contributing factor to the accuracy of electronic apex locator (EAL). Materials and Methods: The literature regarding electrical property measurements of EALs was screened using Medline and Embase. All data acquired were plotted to identify correlations between impedance and log-scaled frequency. The accuracy of the impedance ratio method used to detect the apical constriction (APC) in most EALs was evaluated using linear ramp function fitting. Changes of impedance ratios for various frequencies were evaluated for a variety of file positions. Results: Among the ten papers selected in the search process, the first-order equations between log-scaled frequency and impedance were in the negative direction. When the model for the ratios was assumed to be a linear ramp function, the ratio values decreased if the file went deeper and the average ratio values of the left and right horizontal zones were significantly different in 8 out of 9 studies. The APC was located within the interval of linear relation between the left and right horizontal zones of the linear ramp model. Conclusions: Using the ratio method, the APC was located within a linear interval. Therefore, using the impedance ratio between electrical impedance measurements at different frequencies was a robust method for detection of the APC. (Restor Dent Endod 2015;40(2):113-122)

Permutation entropy (PE) as a complexity measure has been introduced to monitor anesthetic depth for adult. However, PE has not yet been evaluated for its clinical applicability as an indicator of anesthetic depth in children. Therefore, in order to investigate the validity of PE, we compared PE with BIS using pharmacodynamic (PD) modeling in children. Electroencephalogram (EEG) was obtained from BIS monitor during sevoflurane deepening and lightening protocol. End-tidal sevoflurane concentration (Etsevo) and BIS were measured simultaneously. PE was calculated from the processed EEG with the scale ranging from 0 to 100. NONMEM software was used to investigate the PD relationship between Etsevo with BIS and PE. Adjusted PE (APE) values were decreased as anesthesia deepened. APE and BIS showed significant linear correlation (P < 0.001), indicating that PE also reflects anesthesia depth. PD parameters for APE and BIS were estimated with a sigmoid Emax model which describes the relationship between Etsevo and APE/BIS (E o : 78, E max : 17.6, C e50 : 2.5 vol%; γ: 13.1, k eo : 0.47 min(-1) for APE; E o : 89.4; E max : 15.7; C e50 : 2.2 vol%; γ: 6.6, keo: 0.52 min(-1) for BIS). PE seems to be a useful indicator of anesthetic depth, which is comparable to BIS in children.

The sedative state is a transitional state from wakefulness to general anesthesia. However, little is understood regarding the mechanism of conscious sedation, different from general anesthesia while maintaining wakefulness. In this study, we aimed to investigate changes in functional connectivity of the parietal-frontal network, implicated in wakefulness during conscious sedation induced by propofol infusion. The electroencephalography was obtained at the frontal and parietal areas of adult volunteers who maintain wakefulness during low-dose propofol infusion (1.5 mg/kg/h) over 1 h. Spectral Granger causality (GC) (δ, θ, α, β, and γ frequency bands) and time-domain GC were calculated during each stage of awake (before propofol administration), sedation, and recovery (after discontinuation of propofol). We also calculated the phase-locking index and compared it with GC during each stage. A decrease in GC from the frontal to parietal areas was observed particularly in the low-frequency bands during propofol administration. Contrary to the GC changes in the frontoparietal direction, GC from the parietal to frontal areas was increased in the high-frequency bands during propofol administration and significantly decreased after discontinuation of propofol. In summary, we showed that frontal-parietal neural networks were significantly changed differently by the frequency of the brain rhythm and the directions of connections during sedation by propofol administration. Our result suggests that the alteration of brain interaction may induce sedative state lying between awake and general anesthesia.

Although functional connectivity has received considerable attention in the study of consciousness, few studies have investigated functional connectivity limited to the sedated state where consciousness is maintained but impaired. The aim of the present study was to investigate changes in functional connectivity of the parietal-frontal network resulting from nitrous oxide-induced sedation, and to determine the neural correlates of cognitive impairment during consciousness transition states. Electroencephalography was acquired from healthy adult patients who underwent nitrous oxide inhalation to induce cognitive impairment, and was analyzed using Granger causality (GC). Periods of awake, sedation and recovery for GC between frontal and parietal areas in the delta, theta, alpha, beta, gamma and total frequency bands were obtained. The Friedman test with post-hoc analysis was conducted for GC values of each period for comparison. As a sedated state was induced by nitrous oxide inhalation, power in the low frequency band showed increased activity in frontal regions that was reversed with discontinuation of nitrous oxide. Feedback and feedforward connections analyzed in spectral GC were changed differently in accordance with EEG frequency bands in the sedated state by nitrous oxide administration. Calculated spectral GC of the theta, alpha, and beta frequency regions in the parietal-to-frontal direction was significantly decreased in the sedated state while spectral GC in the reverse direction did not show significant change. Frontal-parietal functional connectivity is significantly affected by nitrous oxide inhalation. Significantly decreased parietal-to-frontal interaction may induce a sedated state.

This paper presents the evaluation of LPG (Liquefied petroleum gas) regulators for home use. For the evaluation, several properties of the regulators were experimentally analyzed, such as the operation of safety device, the adjusting and lock-up pressure, the adjusting spring and the diaphragm, with respect to the used time of the regulators. Experimental results showed that the initial operation performances of regulators were degraded with increase of the service time and also showed that the degradation of the performance and material property could become serious after about six-year-use of the regulators.

Mesoporous Ni–alumina catalysts (Ni–alumina-pre and Ni–alumina-post) were synthesized by one-step sol–gel method using micelle complex comprising lauric acid and nickel ion as a template with metal source and using aluminum sec-butoxide as an aluminum source. The Ni–alumina catalysts showed relatively high surface areas (303 m2/g for Ni–alumina-pre and 331 m2/g for Ni–alumina-post) and narrow pore size distributions centered at ca. 4 nm. Highly dispersed Ni particles were observed in the Ni–alumina catalysts (ca. 5.2 nm for Ni–alumina-pre and ca. 6.8 nm for Ni–alumina-post) after reduction at 550 °C, while a catalyst prepared without a template (NiAl-comp) exhibited inferior porosity with large metal particles (ca. 12.3 nm). Mesoporous Ni–alumina catalysts with different porosity were obtained by employing different hydrolysis step of aluminum source. When aluminum source was hydrolyzed under the presence of micelle complex, a supported Ni catalyst with highly developed framework mesoporosity was obtained (Ni–alumina-post). On the other hand, when aluminum source was pre-hydrolyzed followed by mixing with micelle solution, the resulting catalyst (Ni–alumina-pre) retained high portion of textural porosity. It was revealed that the hydrolysis method employed in this research affected not only textural properties but also metal-support interaction in the Ni–alumina catalysts. It was also found that the Ni–alumina-pre catalyst exhibited weaker interaction between nickel and alumina than the Ni–alumina-post, leading to higher degree of reduction in the Ni–alumina-pre catalyst. In the hydrodechlorination of o-dichlorobenzene, the Ni–alumina catalysts exhibited better catalytic performance than the NiAl-comp catalyst, which was attributed to higher metal dispersion in the Ni–alumina catalysts. In particular, the Ni–alumina-pre catalyst showing 1.5 times higher degree of reduction and larger amounts of o-dichlorobenzene adsorption exhibited better catalytic performance than the Ni–alumina-post catalyst.

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-targeted therapy has been demonstrated to improve the outcome of metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC) patients. However, validated predictors that predict response and prognosis to VEGF-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (VEGF-TKIs) remain to be elucidated. We aimed to define a classifier for VEGF-TKI response in mRCC patients.
