Background: The National Institute on Aging, in conjunction with the Department of Health and Human Services as part of the National Alzheimer's Project Act, hosted a 2020 Dementia Care, Caregiving, and Services Research Summit Virtual Meeting Series on August 13, 2020. This article reflects three presentations related to Theme 6: Research Resources, Methods, and Data Infrastructure. Dr. Bynum discussed the challenges of identifying people for population- and healthcare-based research, including how definitions of dementia have changed over time, the opportunities and challenges inherent in the use of electronic data sources, and the need to fit data collection strategies to research goals and questions. Dr. Travison provided an overview on the growing use of embedded pragmatic clinical trials (ePCTs) and how to enhance their impact in dementia research. Dr. Wendler presented on the ethical considerations relevant to consent for dementia research, including assessment of decisional capacity and the role of decisional surrogates., Conclusions: The availability of claims data, electronic health records, and other sources of "existing" data has made the use and development of ePCTs both easier and more appealing. Among other things, they offer advantages in terms of lower cost and generalizability to real-world settings. This is turn has necessitated the use of informatic and analytic approaches to account for some of the limitations and complexities of such data, including multilevel clustering and the need to link and jointly analyze data from the person with dementia and those of their care partner. As part of this process, it will be important to broaden the scope of who is assessed for decisional capacity, make those assessments more study specific, and assist surrogates in making decisions based on what the individual would have chosen for themselves if capacitated (i.e., substituted judgment)., (© 2021 The American Geriatrics Society.)

Context: Worksites can serve as community sites for local health jurisdictions (LHJs) to assist with implementation of evidence-based interventions (EBIs) to prevent and control chronic diseases., Objective: To assess the feasibility and effectiveness of using LHJ staff to disseminate Connect to Wellness (CtW), an effective dissemination package for increasing implementation of EBIs for chronic disease control by small worksites., Design: Single-arm, multisite intervention trial, with measurement at baseline, after 6 months of intervention, and after a maintenance period of 6 months., Setting: Six geographically dispersed counties in Washington State. Target worksites had 20 to 250 employees., Participants: Nine staff members from 6 LHJs delivered CtW to 35 worksites., Intervention: Connect to Wellness seeks to increase worksites' implementation of 14 EBIs classified as communication, policy, or program approaches to increasing 4 behaviors: cancer screening, healthy eating, physical activity, and tobacco cessation., Main Outcome Measure: Evidence-based intervention implementation measured on a scale from 0% to 100%., Results: Participating worksites showed a significant increase (P < .001, t test) in total mean implementation scores from baseline (33%) to 6-month follow-up (47%). Increases in implementation for communications, policy, healthy eating, and tobacco EBIs were statistically significant at 6 months and maintained at 12 months. Increased implementation at 6 months of a group physical activity program was not sustained after the program became unavailable, and total implementation scores at 12 months (38%) showed little change from baseline., Conclusions: Local health jurisdiction-delivered CtW increased worksites' implementation of EBIs at 6 months, and increased implementation in communication, policy, healthy eating, and tobacco was maintained at 12 months. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is an intrinsically insensitive technique, with Boltzmann distributions of nuclear spin states on the order of parts per million in conventional magnetic fields. To overcome this limitation, dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) can be used to gain up to three orders of magnitude in signal enhancement, which can decrease experimental time by up to six orders of magnitude. In DNP experiments, nuclear spin polarization is enhanced by transferring the relatively larger electron polarization to NMR active nuclei via microwave irradiation. Here, we describe the design and performance of a quasi-optical system enabling the use of a single 395 GHz gyrotron microwave source to simultaneously perform DNP experiments on two different 14.1 T ( 1 H 600 MHz) NMR spectrometers: one configured for magic angle spinning (MAS) solid state NMR; the other configured for solution state NMR experiments. In particular, we describe how the high power microwave beam is split, transmitted, and manipulated between the two spectrometers. A 13 C enhancement of 128 is achieved via the cross effect for alanine, using the nitroxide biradical AMUPol, under MAS-DNP conditions at 110 K, while a 31 P enhancement of 160 is achieved via the Overhauser effect for triphenylphosphine using the monoradical BDPA under solution NMR conditions at room temperature. The latter result is the first demonstration of Overhauser DNP in the solution state at a field of 14.1 T ( 1 H 600 MHz). High-resolution, solid-state (11)B NMR spectra have been obtained at high magnetic fields for a range of polycrystalline borates using double-rotation (DOR), multiple-quantum magic angle spinning and isotopic dilution. DOR linewidths can be less than 0.2 ppm in isotopically diluted samples, allowing highly accurate values for the isotropic chemical shift, δiso, and electric field gradient to be obtained. The experimental values are used as a test of density functional calculations using both projector augmented wave based CASTEP and WIEN2k. The CASTEP calculations of δiso are generally in very good agreement with experiment, having r.m.s. deviation 0.40 ppm. WIEN2k calculations of electric field gradient magnitude, CQ, and asymmetry, η, are also in excellent agreement with experiment, with r.m.s. deviations 0.038 MHz and 0.042 respectively. However, whilst CASTEP gives a similar deviation for η (0.043) it overestimates CQ by ∼15%. After scaling of the calculated electric field gradient by 0.842 the deviation in CQ is practically identical to that of the WIEN2k calculations. The spectral assignments that follow from the experimental and computational results allow identification of correlations between δiso and (a) the average B-O-B bond angle, θ[combining overline], for both three and four coordinated boron, giving δiso(B(III)) = (185.1 -θ[combining overline])/3.42 ppm and δiso(B(IV)) = (130.2 -θ[combining overline])/5.31 ppm; and (b) the ring-site T(3) unit trigonal planar angular deviation, Stri, giving δiso(T(3)(ring)) = (1.642 × 10(-2)-Stri)/(8.339 × 10(-4)) ppm.

A Dynamic Nuclear Polarisation (DNP) enhanced solid-state Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) NMR spectrometer operating at 6.7 T is described and demonstrated. The 187 GHz TE(13) fundamental mode of the FU CW VII gyrotron is used as the microwave source for this magnetic field strength and 284 MHz (1)H DNP-NMR. The spectrometer is designed for use with microwave frequencies up to 395 GHz (the TE(16) second-harmonic mode of the gyrotron) for DNP at 14.1T (600 MHz (1)H NMR). The pulsed microwave output from the gyrotron is converted to a quasi-optical Gaussian beam using a Vlasov antenna and transmitted to the NMR probe via an optical bench, with beam splitters for monitoring and adjusting the microwave power, a ferrite rotator to isolate the gyrotron from the reflected power and a Martin-Puplett interferometer for adjusting the polarisation. The Gaussian beam is reflected by curved mirrors inside the DNP-MAS-NMR probe to be incident at the sample along the MAS rotation axis. The beam is focussed to a ~1 mm waist at the top of the rotor and then gradually diverges to give much more efficient coupling throughout the sample than designs using direct waveguide irradiation. The probe can be used in triple channel HXY mode for 600 MHz (1)H and double channel HX mode for 284 MHz (1)H, with MAS sample temperatures ≥85 K. Initial data at 6.7 T and ~1 W pulsed microwave power are presented with (13)C enhancements of 60 for a frozen urea solution ((1)H-(13)C CP), 16 for bacteriorhodopsin in purple membrane ((1)H-(13)C CP) and 22 for (15)N in a frozen glycine solution ((1)H-(15)N CP) being obtained. In comparison with designs which irradiate perpendicular to the rotation axis the approach used here provides a highly efficient use of the incident microwave beam and an NMR-optimised coil design., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc. The local nuclear and electronic structures and molecular dynamics of the ferroelectric lattice in selected geometric fluorides (BaMgF(4), BaZnF(4), BaMg(1 - x)Mn(x)F(4) and BaMg(1 - x)Ni(x)F(4); x = 0.001 and 0.005) have been investigated. The (19)F and (25)Mg isotropic chemical shift δ(iso), (25)Mg quadrupolar coupling constants (C(q)) and asymmetry parameters (η) reflect the geometry of the coordination spheres. The zero-field splitting parameters |D| and |E| are consistent with distorted axial symmetry (low temperatures) and nearly rhombic symmetry (high temperatures) of octahedral Mn(2+) coordination. The high resolution of the nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance and phonon spectra are consistent with the highly ordered crystallographic structure. Combined multi-technique data evidence the subtle discontinuous changes in the temperature dependences of |D| and |E|, isotropic chemical shifts δ(iso) and signature parameters of Raman bands and suggest a discontinuous structural distortion of the fluoride octahedra. The temperature at which this change occurs depends on the ionic radius of the central ion of the octahedral site and is estimated to be ∼ 300 K for Zn(2+) fluorides and ∼ 240 K for Mg(2+) fluorides. This geometrical distortion modifies the lattice dynamics and originates from the rotation of the fluoride octahedra around a new direction approximately perpendicular to that related to the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition.

It is shown that the temperature dependence of the DNP enhancement of the NMR signal from water protons at 3.4 T using TEMPOL as a polarising agent can be obtained provided that the nuclear relaxation, T(1I), is sufficiently fast and the resolution sufficient to measure the (1)H NMR shift. For high radical concentrations (∼100 mM) the leakage factor is approximately 1 and, provided sufficient microwave power is available, the saturation factor is also approximately 1. In this situation the DNP enhancement is solely a product of the ratio of the electron and nuclear gyromagnetic ratios and the coupling factor enabling the latter to be directly determined. Although the use of high microwave power levels needed to ensure saturation causes rapid heating of the sample, this does not prevent maximum DNP enhancements, ε(0), being obtained since T(1I) is very much less than the characteristic heating time at these concentrations. It is necessary, however, to know the temperature variation of T(1I) to allow accurate modelling of the behaviour. The DNP enhancement is found to vary linearly with temperature with ε(0)(T) = -2 ± 2 - (1.35 ± 0.02)T for 6 °C ≤ T ≤ 100 °C. The value determined for the coupling factor, 0.055 ± 0.003 at 25 °C, agrees very well with the molecular dynamics simulations of Sezer et al. (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2009, 11, 6626) who calculated 0.0534, however the experimental values increase much more rapidly with increasing temperature than predicted by these simulations. Large DNP enhancements (|ε(0)| > 100) are reported at high temperatures but it is also shown that significant enhancements (e.g.∼40) can be achieved whilst maintaining the sample temperature at 40 °C by adjusting the microwave power and irradiation time. In addition, short polarisation times enable rapid data acquisition which permits further enhancement of the signal, such that useful liquid state DNP-NMR experiments could be carried out on very small samples.

DNP enhanced (1)H NMR at 143 MHz in toluene is investigated using an NMR spectrometer coupled with a modified EPR spectrometer operating at 94 GHz and TEMPOL as the polarisation agent. A 100 W microwave amplifier was incorporated into the output stage of the EPR instrument so that high microwave powers could be delivered to the probe in either CW or pulsed mode. The maximum enhancement for the ring protons increases from approximately -16 for a 5 mM TEMPOL solution to approximately -50 for a 20 mM solution at a microwave power of approximately 480 mW. The temperature dependence of the enhancement, the NMR relaxation rates and the ESR spectrum of TEMPOL were also studied in an effort to obtain information on the dynamics of the system.

The measurement of temperature in a Magic Angle Spinning NMR probe in the temperature range 85-300K is discussed. It is shown that the shift of the (119)Sn resonance of Sm(2)Sn(2)O(7) makes a good thermometer with shift being given by delta=223 - 9.54x10(4)/Tppm and a potential precision of better than 0.5K over the entire temperature range. The sensitivity is such (e.g. 4.2ppm/K at 150K) that small temperature gradients across the sample can readily be measured. Furthermore, since the spin-lattice relaxation time is very short, measurements can be made in approximately 1s enabling relatively rapid temperature changes to be followed. Values for the chemical shift of (207)Pb in Pb(NO(3))(2) down to approximately 85K are also presented. Although the (207)Pb shift variation is approximately linear near room temperature (we find a slope 0.725+/-0.002ppm/K over the range 293-153K), it clearly deviates from linearity below approximately 130K., (Copyright 2010 Elsevier Inc. A variable B(0) field static (broadline) NMR study of a large suite of niobate materials has enabled the elucidation of high-precision measurement of (93)Nb NMR interaction parameters such as the isotropic chemical shift (delta(iso)), quadrupole coupling constant and asymmetry parameter (C(Q) and eta(Q)), chemical shift span/anisotropy and skew/asymmetry (Omega/Deltadelta and kappa/eta(delta)) and Euler angles (alpha, beta, gamma) describing the relative orientation of the quadrupolar and chemical shift tensorial frames. These measurements have been augmented with ab initio DFT calculations by using WIEN2k and NMR-CASTEP codes, which corroborate these reported values. Unlike previous assertions made about the inability to detect CSA (chemical shift anisotropy) contributions from Nb(V) in most oxo environments, this study emphasises that a thorough variable B(0) approach coupled with the VOCS (variable offset cumulative spectroscopy) technique for the acquisition of undistorted broad (-1/2<-->+1/2) central transition resonances facilitates the unambiguous observation of both quadrupolar and CSA contributions within these (93)Nb broadline data. These measurements reveal that the (93)Nb electric field gradient tensor is a particularly sensitive measure of the immediate and extended environments of the Nb(V) positions, with C(Q) values in the 0 to >80 MHz range being measured; similarly, the delta(iso) (covering an approximately 250 ppm range) and Omega values (covering a 0 to approximately 800 ppm range) characteristic of these niobate systems are also sensitive to structural disposition. However, their systematic rationalisation in terms of the Nb-O bond angles and distances defining the immediate Nb(V) oxo environment is complicated by longer-range influences that usually involve other heavy elements comprising the structure. It has also been established in this study that the best computational method(s) of analysis for the (93)Nb NMR interaction parameters generated here are the all-electron WIEN2k and the gauge included projector augmented wave (GIPAW) NMR-CASTEP DFT approaches, which account for the short- and long-range symmetries, periodicities and interaction-potential characteristics for all elements (and particularly the heavy elements) in comparison with Gaussian 03 methods, which focus on terminated portions of the total structure.

Background: Internet programs for smoking cessation are widely available but few controlled studies demonstrate long-term efficacy., Purpose: To determine the 13-month effectiveness of an Internet program presenting a set sequence of interactive steps, and the role of depressed affect., Methods: In a randomized controlled trial sponsored by the American Cancer Society, a treatment condition (n = 1,106) was compared to a control site (n = 1,047)., Results: More treatment condition participants were abstinent (30-day point prevalence) than control site participants (12.9% vs. 10.1%, p < .05) at 13 months. This effect was greater among participants not reporting depressed affect (15.0% vs. 10.1%, p < .01). Among smokers who reported depressed affect, there was no difference in abstinence between the treatment and control conditions., Conclusions: Data support the long-term efficacy of an Internet intervention for cessation modeled on a structured, in-person treatment approach, especially for participants not experiencing daily depressed affect.

The structural basis of selectivity for cesium and strontium of microcrystalline hexagonal tungsten bronze (HTB) phase Na(x)WO(3+x/2).zH(2)O has been studied using X-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, 1D and 2D (23)Na magic angle spinning (MAS) nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and radiochemical ion exchange investigations. For the HTB system, this study has shown that scattering techniques alone provide an incomplete description of the disorder and rapid exchange of water (with tunnel cations) occurring in this system. However, 1D and 2D (23)Na MAS NMR has identified three sodium species within the HTB tunnels-species A, which is located at the center of the hexagonal window and is devoid of coordinated water, and species B and C, which are the di- and monohydrated variants, respectively, of species A. Although species B accords with the traditional crystallographic model of the HTB phase, this work is the first to propose and identify the anhydrous species A and monohydrate species C. The population (total) of species B and C decreases in comparison to that of species A with increasing exchange of either cesium or strontium; that is, species B and C appear more exchangeable than species A. Moreover, a significant proportion of tunnel water is redistributed by these cations. Multiple ion exchange investigations with radiotracers (137)Cs and (85)Sr have shown that for strontium there is a definite advantage in ensuring that any easily exchanged sodium is removed from the HTB tunnels prior to exchange. The decrease in selectivity (wrt cesium) is most probably due to the slightly smaller effective size of Sr(2+); namely, it is less of a good fit for the hexagonal window, ion exchange site. The selectivity of the HTB framework for cesium has been shown unequivocally to be defined by the structure of the hexagonal window, ion exchange site. Compromising the geometry of this window even in the slightest way by either (1) varying the cell volume through changes to hydration or sodium content or (2) introducing disorder in the a-b plane through isomorphous substitution of molybdenum is sufficient to reduce the selectivity. Indeed, it is our hypothesis that this applies for all cations which are strongly bound by the HTB framework.

Background: Although many smokers seek Internet-based cessation assistance, few studies have experimentally evaluated long-term cessation rates among cigarette smokers who receive Internet assistance in quitting., Objective: The purpose of this study is to describe long-term smoking cessation rates associated with 6 different Internet-based cessation services and the variation among them, to test the hypothesis that interactive and tailored Internet services yield higher long-term quit rates than more static Web-posted assistance, and to explore the possible effects of level of site utilization and a self-reported indicator of depression on long-term cessation rates., Method: In 2004-05, a link was placed on the American Cancer Society (ACS) website for smokers who wanted help in quitting via the Internet. The link led smokers to the QuitLink study website, where they could answer eligibility questions, provide informed consent, and complete the baseline survey. Enrolled participants were randomly assigned to receive emailed access to one of five tailored interactive sites provided by cooperating research partners or to a targeted, minimally interactive ACS site with text, photographs, and graphics providing stage-based quitting advice and peer modeling., Results: 6451 of the visitors met eligibility requirements and completed consent procedures and the baseline survey. All of these smokers were randomly assigned to one of the six experimental groups. Follow-up surveys done online and via telephone interviews at approximately 13 months after randomization yielded 2468 respondents (38%) and found no significant overall quit rate differences among those assigned to the different websites (P = .15). At baseline, 1961 participants (30%) reported an indicator of depression. Post hoc analyses found that this group had significantly lower 13-month quit rates than those who did not report the indicator (all enrolled, 8% vs 12%, P < .001; followed only, 25% vs 31%, P = .003). When the 4490 participants (70%) who did not report an indicator of depression at baseline were separated for analysis, the more interactive, tailored sites, as a whole, were associated with higher quitting rates than the less interactive ACS site: 13% vs 10% (P = .04) among 4490 enrolled and 32% vs 26% (P = .06) among 1798 followed., Conclusions: These findings show that Internet assistance is attractive and potentially cost-effective and suggest that tailored, interactive websites may help cigarette smokers who do not report an indicator of depression at baseline to quit and maintain cessation.

Objective: This study evaluates alternative protocols in telephone counselling for smoking cessation., Design: The American Cancer Society enrolled 6322 clients in a randomised trial comparing three counselling formats of varying duration and frequency of contact, with or without booster sessions, and mailed self help booklets without telephone counselling., Setting and Participants: Participants were drawn from callers to the American Cancer Society's National Cancer Information Center seeking assistance with smoking cessation who provided informed consent and were adult daily smokers, ready to make a quit attempt within two weeks, and from states not served by an evidence based proactive telephone counselling programme., Outcomes: Six-month cessation rates (30-day point prevalence) were measured in telephone interviews., Results: There was a significant counselling effect. The overall cessation rates that were yielded by a brief protocol including booster sessions were equivalent to those obtained with the American Cancer Society's standard protocol with boosters., Conclusions: Based on these findings, the abbreviated protocol with five sessions and two boosters is considered to be an option for improving cost efficiency in the delivery of this service.

Eligible smokers (N = 6,451) visiting the American Cancer Society's Internet site offering cessation assistance were, with informed consent, randomized to receive access either to a static Internet site with quitting advice or to one of five interactive sites provided by cooperating research partners. Three-month follow-up surveys were conducted via online survey with E-mail prompts, or telephone calls, to assess quitting success; 54% of participants provided follow-up data. Results showed no significant overall difference in cessation rates among participants assigned to the interactive or static sites. We found large differences in the utilization of the five interactive sites. When sites were grouped by level of use, a significantly higher reported 3-month cessation rate was observed among participants assigned to the more highly utilized sites than among those assigned to the less utilized sites (12.2% vs. 10.2% of all randomized participants, 26.0% vs. 22.1% of followed participants). These findings show that interactive Internet sites yielding high levels of utilization can increase quitting success among smokers seeking assistance via the Internet.

A number of polycrystalline copper(I) O,O'-dialkyldithiophosphate cluster compounds with Cu4, Cu6, and Cu8 cores were synthesized and characterized by using extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The structural relationship of these compounds is discussed. The polycrystalline copper(I) O,O'-diisobutyldithiophosphate cluster compounds, [Cu8{S2P(OiBu)2}6(S)] and [Cu6{S2P(OiBu)2}6], were also characterized by using 31P CP/MAS NMR (CP = cross polarization, MAS = magic-angle spinning) and static 65Cu NMR spectroscopies (at different magnetic fields) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Comparative analyses of the 31P chemical-shift tensor, and the 65Cu chemical shift and quadrupolar-splitting parameters, estimated from the experimental NMR spectra of the polycrystalline copper(I) cluster compounds, are presented. The adsorption mechanism of the potassium O,O'-diisobutyldithiophosphate collector, K[S2P(OiBu)2], at the surface of synthetic chalcocite (Cu2S) was studied by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). 31P NMR resonance lines from collector-treated chalcocite surfaces were assigned to a mixture of [Cu8{S2P(OiBu)2}6(S)] and [Cu6{S2P(OiBu)2}6] compounds.

A solid-state 17O NMR 1H-decoupled double angle rotation (DOR) study of monosodium l-glutamate monohydrate (l-MSG) is reported. It is shown that all eight inequivalent sites can be resolved with DOR line widths ( approximately 65 Hz) approximately 120 times narrower than those in the MAS spectrum. The lines are tentatively assigned on the basis of their behavior under proton decoupling and the isotropic chemical shift and the quadrupole interaction parameter for each extracted by a combination of DOR and 3Q MAS at variable magnetic fields. With a shift range of approximately 45 ppm for these similar oxygen sites and spectral resolution under DOR comparable to that for spin-1/2 nuclei, solid-state 17O NMR should have tremendous potential in the study of biomolecules.

Polycrystalline tetra-nuclear Cu4[S2P(O-i-C3H7)2]4, hexa-nuclear Cu6[S2P(OC2H5)2]6, and octa-nuclear Cu8[S2P(O-i-C4H9)2]6(S) complexes were synthesized and analyzed by means of solid-state 31P CP/MAS and 65Cu static NMR spectroscopy. The symmetries of the electronic environments around each P-site were estimated from the 31P chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) parameters, Deltaaniso and eta. The 65Cu chemical shift and quadrupolar splitting parameters obtained from the experimental 65Cu NMR spectra of the polycrystalline Cu(I)-complexes are presented. A solid-state NMR approach for the elucidation of the stereochemistry of poly-nuclear Cu(I) dithiophosphate complexes, when the structural analysis of the systems by single-crystal X-ray diffraction is not readily available, is proposed.

A systematic solid-state 17O NMR study of a series of carboxylic compounds, maleic acid, chloromaleic acid, KH maleate, KH chloromaleate, K2 chloromaleate, and LiH phthalate.MeOH, is reported. Magic-angle spinning (MAS), triple-quantum (3Q) MAS, and double angle rotation (DOR) 17O NMR spectra were recorded at high magnetic fields (14.1 and 18.8 T). 17O MAS NMR for metal-free carboxylic acids and metal-containing carboxylic salts show featured spectra and demonstrate that this combined, where necessary, with DOR and 3QMAS, can yield site-specific information for samples containing multiple oxygen sites. In addition to 17O NMR spectroscopy, extensive quantum mechanical calculations were carried out to explore the influence of hydrogen bonding at these oxygen sites. B3LYP/6-311G++(d,p) calculations of 17O NMR parameters yielded good agreement with the experimental values. Linear correlations are observed between the calculated 17O NMR parameters and the hydrogen bond strengths, suggesting the possibility of estimating H-bonding information from 17O NMR data. The calculations also revealed intermolecular H-bond effects on the 17O NMR shielding tensors. It is found that the delta11 and delta22 components of the chemical shift tensor at O-H and C=O, respectively, are aligned nearly parallel with the strong H-bond and shift away from this direction as the H-bond interaction weakens.

A number of lead(II) O,O'-dialkyldithiophosphate complexes were studied by (13)C, (31)P, and (207)Pb MAS NMR. Simulations of (31)P chemical shift anisotropy using spinning sideband analysis reveal a linear relationship between the SPS bond angle and the principal values delta(22) and delta(33) of the (31)P chemical shift tensor. The (31)P CSA data were used to assign ligands with different structural functions. In the cases of diethyldithiophosphate and di-iso-butyldithiophosphate lead(II) complexes, (2)J((31)P, (207)Pb)-couplings were resolved and used to confirm the suggested assignment of the ligands. The SIMPSON computer program was used to calculate (31)P and (207)Pb spectral sideband patterns.

Results from a solid-state 139La NMR spectroscopic investigation of the anhydrous lanthanum(III) halides (LaX3; X=F, Cl, Br, I) at applied magnetic fields of 7.0, 9.4, 11.7, 14.1, and 17.6 T are presented and highlight the advantages of working at high applied magnetic field strengths. The 139La quadrupolar coupling constants are found to range from 15.55 to 24.0 MHz for LaCl3 and LaI3, respectively. The lanthanum isotropic chemical shifts exhibit an inverse halogen dependence with values ranging from -135 ppm for LaF3 to 700 ppm for LaI3, which represents nearly half of the total lanthanum chemical shift range. The spans of the magnetic shielding tensors also vary widely, from 35 to 650 ppm for the solid LaF3 through LaI3. DFT calculations of the 139La electric field gradient and magnetic shielding tensors have been performed and provide a qualitative interpretation of the trends observed experimentally.

13C, 14N, 15N, 17O, and 35Cl NMR parameters, including chemical shift tensors and quadrupolar tensors for 14N, 17O, and 35Cl, are calculated for the crystalline forms of various amino acids under periodic boundary conditions and complemented by experiment where necessary. The 13C shift tensors and 14N electric field gradient (EFG) tensors are in excellent agreement with experiment. Similarly, static 17O NMR spectra could be precisely simulated using the calculation of the full chemical shift (CS) tensors and their relative orientation with the EFG tensors. This study allows correlations to be found between hydrogen bonding in the crystal structures and the 17O NMR shielding parameters and the 35Cl quadrupolar parameters, respectively. Calculations using the two experimental structures for L-alanine have shown that, while the calculated isotropic chemical shift values of 13C and 15N are relatively insensitive to small differences in the experimental structure, the 17O shift is markedly affected.

The interactions of synthetic chalcocite surfaces with diethyldithiophosphate, potassium salt, K[S2P(OC2H5)2], were studied by means of 31P cross-polarization/magic angle spinning (CP/MAS) NMR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To identify the species formed on the Cu2S surfaces, a polycrystalline {CuI6[S2P(OC2H5)2]6} cluster was synthesized and analyzed by SEM, powder X-ray diffraction techniques and solid-state 31P CP/MAS NMR and static 65Cu NMR spectroscopy. 31P chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) parameters, delta(cs) and eta(cs), were estimated and used for assigning the bridging type of diethyldithiophosphate ligands in the {CuI6[S2P(OC2H5)2]6} cluster. The latter data were compared to 31P CSA parameters estimated from the spinning sideband patterns in 31P NMR spectra of the collector-treated mineral surfaces: formation of polycrystalline {CuI6[S2P(OC2H5)2]6} on the Cu2S surfaces is suggested. The second-order quadrupolar line shape of 65Cu was simulated, and the NMR interaction parameters, CQ and etaQ, for the copper(I) diethyldithiophosphate cluster were obtained.

We report pulse sequences for the sensitivity enhancement of magic-angle spinning and multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning spectra of spin-72 systems. Sensitivity enhancement is obtained with the use of fast amplitude-modulated (FAM) radiofrequency pulses. In one-dimensional magic-angle spinning experiments, signal enhancement of 3 is obtained by a FAM pulse followed by a soft 90 degrees pulse. In two-dimensional multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning experiments, FAM pulses are used for both the excitation of multiple-quantum coherences and for their conversion into observable single-quantum coherences. The observed signal enhancements are 2.2 in 3Q experiments, 3.1 in 5Q experiments, and 4.1 in 7Q experiments, compared to the conventional two-pulse scheme. The pulse schemes are demonstrated on the 45Sc NMR of Sc2(SO4)3 x 5H2O and the 139La NMR of LaAlO3. We also demonstrate the generation of FAM pulses by double-frequency irradiation.

We report here an efficient multiple-quantum magic-angle spinning (MQMAS) pulse sequence involving fast amplitude-modulated (FAM) radio-frequency pulses for excitation and conversion of five-quantum (5Q) coherences of spin-5/2 nuclei. The use of a FAM-I type pulse train for the conversion of 5Q into 1Q coherences proves to be easier to implement experimentally than the earlier suggested use of a FAM-II type sequence [J. Magn. Reson. 154 (2002) 280], while delivering at least equal signal enhancement. Results of numerical simulations and experimental 27Al 5QMAS spectra of aluminium acetylacetonate for different excitation and conversion schemes are compared to substantiate these claims. We also demonstrate the feasibility of acquiring 5QMAS spectra of spin-5/2 systems using cogwheel phase cycling [J. Magn. Reson. 155 (2002) 300] to select the desired coherence pathways. A cogwheel phase cycle of only 57 steps is shown to be as effective as the minimum conventional nested 77-step phase cycle.

The question of whether or not higher-order (five-, seven- and nine-quantum) multiple-quantum magic angle spinning (MQMAS) experiments yield isotropic NMR spectra of half-integer quadrupolar nuclei with higher resolution than the basic three-quantum MAS experiment is examined. The frequency dispersion is shown theoretically to be greatly increased in higher-order MQMAS spectra, but it is argued that whether or not this translates into an increase in resolution depends upon the ratio of the homogeneous to inhomogeneous contributions to the isotropic linewidth. Experimentally, it is demonstrated using three-, five- and seven-quantum 45Sc MAS NMR and three- and five-quantum 27Al MAS NMR of crystalline samples that higher-order MQMAS experiments can yield a real and useful increase in resolution but that, owing to the presence of inhomogeneous broadening in the isotropic spectra, this increase is less than the theoretically predicted value. A number of practical issues relating to resolution in MQMAS NMR are also pointed out.
