Search

About 20% of the white dwarfs possess a magnetic field that may be detected by the splitting and/or polarization of their spectral lines. As they cool, the effective temperatures of the white dwarfs becomes so low that no spectral lines can be seen in the visible wavelength range. If their atmospheres are not polluted by the debris of a planetary system, these cool white dwarfs have featureless optical spectra. Until quite recently, very little was known about the incidence of magnetic fields in these objects. However, when observed with polarimetric techniques, a significant number of featureless white dwarfs reveal strong magnetic fields in their optical continuum spectra. Measuring the occurrence rate and strength of magnetic fields in old white dwarfs may help us to understand how these fields are generated and evolve. We report the results of an ongoing survey of cool white dwarfs with the high-precision broad-band polarimeter DIPOL-UF, which is deployed at the Nordic Optical Telescope on La Palma, Spain. This survey has led to the firm discovery of 13 cool magnetic white dwarfs in the solar neighborhood so far, including six new detections that we report in this paper.

We report here the performance and first results of the new multiband optical polarimeter DIPOL-1, installed at the Sierra Nevada Observatory 90 cm T90 telescope (SNO, Granada, Spain). DIPOL-1 is equipped with a plane parallel calcite plate and $\lambda$/2 retarder for modulating the intensity of two perpendicularly polarized beams, and a high readout speed CMOS camera that allows for fast, time-dense coverage. We characterize the performance of this instrument through a series of tests on zero- and high-polarization standard stars. The instrumental polarization in the Nasmyth focus was well determined, with a very stable contribution of 4.0806% $\pm$ 0.0014% in the optical $R$ band. For bright high-polarization standards ($m_{R}<8$) we reach precisions $<$0.02% in polarization degree and 0.1$^{\circ}$ in polarization angle for exposures of 2$-$4 minutes. The polarization properties of these stars have been constrained, providing more recent results also about possible variability for future studies on some of the most used calibrators. Moreover, we have tested the capability of observing much fainter objects, in particular through blazar observations, where we reach a precision $<$0.5$-$0.6% and $<$0.5$^{\circ}$ for faint targets ($m_{R}\sim16.5$) with exposures of $\sim$1 hour. For brighter targets ($m_{R}\sim14.5-15$), we can aim for time-dense observations with errors $<$$0.2-0.4$% and $<$$1-1.5^{\circ}$ in 5-20 minutes. We have successfully performed a first campaign with DIPOL-1, detecting significant polarized emission of several blazars, with special attention to the highest ever polarization degree measured from blazar 3C~345 at $\sim$32%., Comment: Accepted in AJ

Aims. We aim to investigate how polarimetric observations can improve our understanding of the nature and diversity of M/X-type asteroids. Methods. Polarimetric observations of the selected M/X-type asteroids were carried out at the Tohoku 0.6-m telescope at Haleakala Observatory, Hawaii (simultaneously in BVR filters), the 2-m telescope of the Bulgarian National Astronomical Observatory in Rozhen (in R filter), and the 2.15-m telescope of the Complejo Astron\'omico El Leoncito (CASLEO), Argentina (in V filter). We analysed the polarimetric characteristics of M/X-type asteroids along with the available data obtained by other techniques. Results. New polarimetric observations of 22 M/X-type asteroids combined with published observations provide a data set of 41 asteroids for which the depth of a negative polarisation branch and/or inversion angle were determined. We found that the depth of the negative polarisation branch tends to increase with decreasing steepness of the near-infrared spectra. Asteroids with a deeper negative polarisation branch tend to have a higher radar circular polarisation ratio. We show that, based on the relationship of the depth of the negative polarisation branch and inversion angle, two main sub-types can be distinguished among M-type asteroids. We suggest that these groups may be related to different surface compositions similar to (1) irons and stony-irons and (2) enstatite and iron-rich carbonaceous chondrites., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

We investigate the linear polarization produced by interstellar dust aligned by the magnetic field in the solar neighborhood (d< 50 pc). We also look for intrinsic effects from circumstellar processes, specifically in terms of polarization variability and wavelength dependence. We aim to detect and map dust clouds which give rise to statistically significant amounts of polarization of the starlight passing through the cloud, and to determine the interstellar magnetic field direction from the position angle of the observed polarization. High-precision broad-band (BVR) polarization observations are made of 361 stars in spectral classes F to G, in the magnitude range 4-9, with detection sensitivity at the level of or better than 10E-5 (0.001 %). Statistically significant (>3 sigma) polarization is found in 115 stars, and > 2 sigma detection in 178 stars, out of the total sample of 361 stars. Polarization maps based on these data show filament-like patterns of polarization position angles which are related to both the heliosphere geometry, the kinematics of nearby clouds, and the Interstellar Boundary EXplorer (IBEX) ribbon magnetic field. From long-term multiple observations, a number (18) of stars show evidence of intrinsic variability at the 10E-5 level. This can be attributed to circumstellar effects (e.g., debris disks and chromospheric activity). Blazar OJ287 exhibits large thermal flares at least twice every 12 years. The times of these flares have been predicted successfully using the model of a quasi-Keplerian eccentric black hole binary where the secondary impacts the accretion disk of the primary, creating the thermal flares. New measurements of the historical light curve have been combined with the observations of the 2015 November/December flare to identify the impact record since year 1886, and to constrain the orbit of the binary. The orbit solution shows that the binary period, now 12.062 year, is decreasing at the rate of 36 days per century. This corresponds to an energy loss to gravitational waves that is 6.5 +- 4 % less than the rate predicted by the standard quadrupolar gravitational wave (GW) emission. Aims. The optical emission of black hole transients increases by several magnitudes during the X-ray outbursts. Whether the extra light arises from the X-ray heated outer disc, from the inner hot accretion flow, or from the jet is currently debated. Optical polarisation measurements are able to distinguish the relative contributions of these components. Methods. We present the results of BVR polarisation measurements of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the period of March-April 2018. Results. We detect small, $\sim$0.7%, but statistically significant polarisation, part of which is of interstellar origin. Depending on the interstellar polarisation estimate, the intrinsic polarisation degree of the source is between $\sim$0.3% and 0.7%, and the polarisation position angle is between $\sim10\deg-30\deg$. We show that the polarisation increases after MJD 58222 (2018 April 14). The change is of the order of 0.1% and is most pronounced in the R band. The change of the source Stokes parameters occurs simultaneously with the drop of the observed V-band flux and a slow softening of the X-ray spectrum. The Stokes vectors of intrinsic polarisation before and after the drop are parallel, at least in the V and R filters. Conclusions. We suggest that the increased polarisation is due to the decreasing contribution of the non-polarized component, which we associate with the the hot flow or jet emission. The low polarisation can result from the tangled geometry of the magnetic field or from the Faraday rotation in the dense, ionised, and magnetised medium close to the black hole. Starlight that becomes linearly polarized by magnetically aligned dust grains provides a viable diagnostic of the interstellar magnetic field (ISMF). A survey is underway to map the local ISMF using data collected at eight observatories in both hemispheres. Two approaches are used to obtain the magnetic structure: statistically evaluating magnetic field directions traced by multiple polarization position angles, and least-squares fits that provide the dipole component of the magnetic field. We find that the magnetic field in the circumheliospheric interstellar medium (CHM), which drives winds of interstellar gas and dust through the heliosphere, drapes over the heliopause and influences polarization measurements. We discover a polarization band that can be described with a great circle that traverses the heliosphere nose and ecliptic poles. A gap in the band appears in a region coinciding both with the highest heliosheath pressure, found by IBEX, and the center of the Loop I superbubble. The least-squares analysis finds a magnetic dipole component of the polarization band with the axis oriented toward the ecliptic poles. The filament of dust around the heliosphere and the warm helium breeze flowing through the heliosphere trace the same magnetic field directions. Regions along the polarization band near the heliosphere nose have magnetic field orientations within 15 degrees of sightlines. Regions in the IBEX ribbon have field directions within 40 degrees of the plane of the sky. Several spatially coherent magnetic filaments are within 15 pc. Most of the low frequency radio emissions detected by the two Voyager spacecraft follow the polarization band. Classical novae are eruptions on the surface of a white dwarf in a binary system. The material ejected from the white dwarf surface generally forms an axisymmetric shell of gas and dust around the system. The three-dimensional structure of these shells is difficult to untangle when viewed on the plane of the sky. In this work a geometrical model is developed to explain new observations of the 2015 nova V5668 Sagittarii. To understand the ionisation structure in terms of the nova shell morphology and estimate the emission distribution directly following the light-curve's dust-dip. High-cadence optical polarimetry and spectroscopy observations of a nova are presented. The ejecta is modelled in terms of morpho-kinematics and photoionisation structure. Initially observational results are presented, including broadband polarimetry and spectroscopy of V5668 Sgr nova during eruption. Variability over these observations provides clues towards the evolving structure of the nova shell. The position angle of the shell is derived from polarimetry, which is attributed to scattering from small dust grains. Shocks in the nova outflow are suggested in the photometry and the effect of these on the nova shell are illustrated with various physical diagnostics. Changes in density and temperature as the super soft source phase of the nova began are discussed. Gas densities are found to be of the order of 10$^{9}$ cm$^{-3}$ for the nova in its auroral phase. The blackbody temperature of the central stellar system is estimated to be around $2.2\times10^{5}$ K at times coincident with the super soft source turn-on. We present the results of our power spectral density analysis for the BL Lac object OJ\,287, utilizing the {\it Fermi}-LAT survey at high-energy $\gamma$-rays, {\it Swift}-XRT in X-rays, several ground-based telescopes and the {\it Kepler} satellite in the optical, and radio telescopes at GHz frequencies. The light curves are modeled in terms of continuous-time auto-regressive moving average (CARMA) processes. Owing to the inclusion of the {\it Kepler} data, we were able to construct \emph{for the first time} the optical variability power spectrum of a blazar without any gaps across $\sim6$ dex in temporal frequencies. Our analysis reveals that the radio power spectra are of a colored-noise type on timescales ranging from tens of years down to months, with no evidence for breaks or other spectral features. The overall optical power spectrum is also consistent with a colored noise on the variability timescales ranging from 117 years down to hours, with no hints of any quasi-periodic oscillations. The X-ray power spectrum resembles the radio and optical power spectra on the analogous timescales ranging from tens of years down to months. Finally, the $\gamma$-ray power spectrum is noticeably different from the radio, optical, and X-ray power spectra of the source: we have detected a characteristic relaxation timescale in the {\it Fermi}-LAT data, corresponding to $\sim 150$\,days, such that on timescales longer than this, the power spectrum is consistent with uncorrelated (white) noise, while on shorter variability timescales there is correlated (colored) noise., Comment: ApJ accepted

We investigate the structure of the O-type binary system HD 48099 by measuring linear polarization that arises due to light scattering process. Linear polarization measurements of HD 48099 in the B, V and R passbands with the high-precision Dipol-2 polarimeter have been carried out. The data have been obtained with the 60 cm KVA (Observatory Roque de los Muchachos, La Palma, Spain) and T60 (Haleakala, Hawaii, USA) remotely controlled telescopes during 31 observing nights. Polarimetry in the optical wavelengths has been complemented by observations in the X-rays with the SWIFT space observatory. Optical polarimetry revealed small intrinsic polarization in HD 48099 with 0.1% peak to peak variation over the orbital period of 3.08 days. The variability pattern is typical for binary systems, showing strong second harmonic of the orbital period. We apply our model code for the electron scattering in the circumstellar matter to put constraints on the system geometry. A good model fit is obtained for scattering of light on a cloud produced by the colliding stellar winds. The geometry of the cloud, with a broad distribution of scattering particles away from the orbital plane, helps in constraining the (low) orbital inclination. We derive from the polarization data the inclination i = 17 deg +/- 2deg and the longitude of the ascending node Omega = 82 deg +/- 1 deg of the binary orbit. The available X-ray data provide additional evidence for the existence of the colliding stellar winds in the system. Another possible source of the polarized light could be scattering from the stellar photospheres. The models with circumstellar envelopes, or matter confined to the orbital plane, do not provide good constraints on the low inclination, better than i < 27 deg, as is already suggested by the absence of eclipses., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysics

OJ287 is a quasi-periodic quasar with roughly 12 year optical cycles. It displays prominent outbursts which are predictable in a binary black hole model. The model predicted a major optical outburst in December 2015. We found that the outburst did occur within the expected time range, peaking on 2015 December 5 at magnitude 12.9 in the optical R-band. Based on Swift/XRT satellite measurements and optical polarization data, we find that it included a major thermal component. Its timing provides an accurate estimate for the spin of the primary black hole, chi = 0.313 +- 0.01. The present outburst also confirms the established general relativistic properties of the system such as the loss of orbital energy to gravitational radiation at the 2 % accuracy level and it opens up the possibility of testing the black hole no-hair theorem with a 10 % accuracy during the present decade.

The interstellar magnetic field (ISMF) near the heliosphere is a basic part of the solar neighborhood that can only be studied using polarized starlight. Results of an ongoing survey of polarized starlight are analyzed with the goal of linking the interstellar magnetic field that shapes the heliosphere to the nearby field in interstellar space. New results for the direction of the nearby ISMF, based on a merit function that utilizes polarization position angles, identify several magnetic components. The dominant interstellar field, B_pol, is aligned with the direction L,B= 36.2,49.0 (+/-16.0) degrees and is within 8 degrees of the IBEX Ribbon ISMF direction. Stars tracing B_pol have the same mean distance as stars that do not trace B_pol, but show weaker polarizations consistent with lower column densities of polarizing grains. The variations in the polarization position angle directions indicate a low level of magnetic turbulence. B_pol is found after excluding polarizations that trace a separate magnetic structure that apparently is due to interstellar dust deflected around the heliosphere. Local interstellar cloud velocities relative to the LSR increase with the angles between the LSR velocities and ISMF, indicating that the kinematics of local interstellar material is ordered by the ISMF. Polarization and color excess data are consistent with an extension of Loop I to the solar vicinity. Polarizations are consistent with previous findings of more efficient grain alignment in low column density sightlines. Optical polarization and color excess data indicate the presence of nearby interstellar dust in the BICEP2 field. Color excess E(B-V) indicates an optical extinction of A_V about 0.59 mag in the BICEP2 field, while the polarization data indicate that A_V is larger than 0.09 mag. A recently discovered filament of polarized starlight that traces a coherent magnetic field is shown to have several properties that are consistent with an origin in the outer heliosheath of the heliosphere: (1) The magnetic field that provides the best fit to the polarization position angles is directed within 6.7+-11 degrees of the observed upwind direction of the flow of interstellar neutral helium gas through the heliosphere. (2) The magnetic field is ordered; the component of the variation of the polarization position angles that can be attributed to magnetic turbulence is small. (3) The axis of the elongated filament can be approximated by a line that defines an angle of 80+/-14 degrees with the plane that is formed by the interstellar magnetic field vector and the vector of the inflowing neutral gas (the "BV" plane). We propose that this polarization feature arises from aligned interstellar dust grains in the outer heliosheath where the interstellar plasma and magnetic field are deflected around the heliosphere. The proposed outer heliosheath location of the polarizing grains requires confirmation by modeling grain-propagation through three-dimensional MHD heliosphere models that simultaneously calculate torques on asymmetric dust grains interacting with the heliosphere., Comment: Submitted to Astrophysical Journal January 19, 2015

The local interstellar magnetic field affects both the heliosphere and the surrounding cluster of interstellar clouds (CLIC). Measurements of linearly polarized starlight provide the only test of the magnetic field threading the CLIC. Polarization measurements of the CLIC magnetic field show multiple local magnetic structures, one of which is aligned with the magnetic field traced by the center of the "ribbon" of energetic neutral atoms discovered by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). Comparisons between the bulk motion of the CLIC through the local standard of rest, the magnetic field direction, the geometric center of Loop I, and the polarized dust bridge extending from the heliosphere toward the North Polar Spur direction all suggest that the CLIC is part of the rim region of the Loop I superbubble., Comment: To be published in the proceedings of the 13th Annual International Astrophysics Conference: "Voyager, IBEX, and the Interstellar Medium"

A key indicator of the galactic environment of the Sun is provided by the magnetic field in the interstellar medium (ISM), which influences the shape of the heliosphere. The direction of the nearby interstellar magnetic field (ISMF) is determined from starlight polarized in the ISM. The local ISMF direction is found from the ISMF direction that provides the best fit to the polarization position angles of nearby stars, using weighted fits to the data. New polarization observations are included in the analysis. The best-fitting ISMF is close to the magnetic field direction traced by the center of the Ribbon of energetic neutral atoms, discovered by the Interstellar Boundary Explorer spacecraft. Both the magnetic field and kinematics of the local ISM are consistent with a scenario where the local ISM is a fragment of the Loop I superbubble. An ordered component of the local ISMF is found in a region where PlanetPol data show that polarization increases with distance. It extends to within 8 parsecs of the Sun and implies a weak curvature in the nearby ISMF. Variations from the ordered component indicate turbulence of +/-23 deg. The local ISMF is generally uniform in direction over spatial scales of 8-200 parsecs so that it appears similar to interarm magnetic fields. The best-fitting ISMF direction also agrees with the position of tail-in spatial asymmetries in GeV-TeV galactic cosmic rays. The peculiar geometrical relation between the CMB dipole moment, the heliosphere nose, and local ISMF is supported by these new results. Polarimetry is a novel tool to detect and characterize exoplanets and their atmospheres. Polarized scattered light from the non-transiting hot Jupiter $\upsilon$~And~b is measured to further constrain its orbit, mass, density, and geometrical albedo. We obtained polarimetric measurements in the $UBV$ bands over the orbital period and deduce an average peak-to-peak amplitude of $(49 \pm 5)\times10^{-6}$ in both Stokes $q$ and $u$. From our data we evaluate the orbit inclination $i=111\degr\pm11\degr$, longitude of the ascending node $\Omega=236\degr\pm12\degr$ (or equivalently 56\degr), the effective size of the scattering atmosphere in the optical blue of $1.36\pm0.20$\,$R_{\rm J}$. These combined with spectroscopic measurements result in the planet mass $0.74\pm0.07$\,$M_{\rm J}$, mean density $0.36\pm0.08$\,g\,cm$^{-3}$, and surface gravity $\sim10^3$\,cm\,s$^{-2}$, which favor a close similarity of $\upsilon$~And~b to other inflated hot Jupiters. We also significantly improved the periastron epoch $T_{\rm p}={\rm JD}2,450,032.451$, interior conjunction epoch $T_{\rm t}={\rm JD}2,450,034.668$, and periastron longitude $\omega=279\degr\pm14\degr$. The latter indicates that the apsidal resonance known for planets c and d includes also planet b. Obtained limits on the wavelength dependent geometrical albedo (average 0.35) indicate its similarity to Neptune with peak reflectivity in the blue. Combining all available measurements at various passbands, we construct a unified wavelength dependent albedo of an average hot Jupiter. It appears to be largely shaped by Rayleigh scattering in the blue and atomic and molecular absorption in the optical and near infrared. We report first multicolor polarimetric measurements (UBV bands) for the hot Jupiters HD189733b and confirm our previously reported detection of polarization in the B band (Berdyugina et al. 2008). The wavelength dependence of polarization indicates the dominance of Rayleigh scattering with a peak in the blue B and U bands of ~10^-4+/-10^-5 and at least a factor of two lower signal in the V band. The Rayleigh-like wavelength dependence, detected also in the transmitted light during transits, implies a rapid decrease of the polarization signal toward longer wavelengths. Therefore, the nondetection by Wiktorowicz (2009), based on a measurement integrated within a broad passband covering the V band and partly B and R bands, is inconclusive and consistent with our detection in B. We discuss possible sources of the polarization and demonstrate that effects of incomplete cancellation of stellar limb polarization due to starspots or tidal perturbations are negligible as compared to scattering polarization in the planetary atmosphere. We compare the observations with a Rayleigh-Lambert model and determine effective radii and geometrical albedos for different wavelengths. We find a close similarity of the wavelength dependent geometrical albedo with that of the Neptune atmosphere, which is known to be strongly influenced by Rayleigh and Raman scattering. Context. The origin, evolution, and ultimate fate of magnetic cataclysmic variables are poorly understood. It is largely the nature of the magnetic fields in these systems that leads to this poor understanding. Fundamental properties, such as the field strength and the axis alignment, are unknown in a majority of these systems. Aims. We undertake to put all the previous circular polarization measurements into context and systematically survey intermediate polars for signs of circular polarization, hence to get an indication of their true magnetic field strengths and try to understand the evolution of magnetic cataclysmic variables. Methods. We used the TurPol instrument at the Nordic Optical Telescope to obtain simultaneous UBVRI photo-polarimetric observations of a set of intermediate polars, during the epoch 2006 July 31 - August 2. Results. Of this set of eight systems two (1RXS J213344.1+510725 and 1RXS J173021.5-055933) were found to show significant levels of circular polarization, varying with spin phase. Five others (V2306 Cyg, AO Psc, DQ Her, FO Aqr, and V1223 Sgr) show some evidence for circular polarization and variation of this with spin phase, whilst AE Aqr shows little evidence for polarized emission. We also report the first simultaneous UBVRI photometry of the newly identified intermediate polar 1RXS J173021.5-055933. Conclusions. Circular polarization may be ubiquitous in intermediate polars, albeit at a low level of one or two percent or less. It is stronger at longer wavelengths in the visible spectrum. Our results lend further support to the possible link between the presence of soft X-ray components and the detectability of circular polarization in intermediate polars., Comment: 14 pages. Our simultaneous multicolor (UBVRI) circular polarimetry has revealed nearly sinusoidal variation over the WD spin cycle, and almost symmetric positive and negative polarization excursions. Maximum amplitudes are observed in the B and V bands (+-3 %). This is the first time that polarization peaking in the blue has been discovered in an IP, and suggests that V405 Aur is the highest magnetic field IP found so far. The polarized flux spectrum is similar to those found in polars with magnetic fields in the range B ~ 25-50 MG. Our low resolution circular spectropolarimetry has given evidence of transient features which can be fitted by cyclotron harmonics n = 6, 7, and 8, at a field of B = 31.5 +- 0.8 MG, consistent with the broad-band polarized flux spectrum. Timings of the circular polarization zero crossovers put strict upper limits on WD spin period changes and indicate that the WD in V405 Aur is currently accreting closely at the spin equilibrium rate, with very long synchronization timescales, T_s > 10^9 yr. For the observed spin to orbital period ratio, P_{spin}/P_{orb} = 0.0365, and P_{orb} ~ 4.15 hr, existing numerical accretion models predict spin equilibrium condition with B ~ 30 MG if the mass ratio of the binary components is q_1 ~ 0.4. We report the first direct detection of an exoplanet in the visible polarized light. The transiting planet HD189733b is one of the very hot Jupiters with shortest periods and, thus, smallest orbits, which makes them ideal candidates for polarimetric detections. We obtained polarimetric measurements of HD189733 in the $B$ band well distributed over the orbital period and detected two polarization maxima near planetary elongations with a peak amplitude of $\sim2\cdot10^{-4}$. Assuming Rayleigh scattering, we estimated the effective size of the scattering atmosphere (Lambert sphere) to be 1.5$\pm$0.2 $R_{\rm J}$, which is 30% larger than the radius of the opaque body previously inferred from transits. If the scattering matter fills the planetary Roche lobe, the lower limit of the geometrical albedo can be estimated as 0.14. The phase dependence of polarization indicates that the planetary orbit is oriented almost in a north-south direction with a longitude of ascending node $\Omega$=(16\degr or 196\degr)$\pm$8\degr. We obtain independent estimates of the orbit inclination $i$=98\degr$\pm$8\degr and eccentricity $e$=0.0 (with an uncertainty of 0.05) which are in excellent agreement with values determined previously from transits and radial velocities. Our findings clearly demonstrate the power of polarimetry and open a new dimension in exploring exoplanetary atmospheres even for systems without transits., Comment: accepted in ApJL

We report simultaneous UBVRI photo-polarimetric observations of the long period (7.98 h) AM Her binary V1309 Ori. The length and shape of the eclipse ingress and egress varies from night to night. We suggest this is due to the variation in the brightness of the accretion stream. By comparing the phases of circular polarization zero-crossovers with previous observations, we confirm that V1309 Ori is well synchronized, and find an upper limit of 0.002 percent for the difference between the spin and orbital periods. We model the polarimetry data using a model consisting of two cyclotron emission regions at almost diametrically opposite locations, and centered at colatitude 35 (deg) and 145 (deg) on the surface of the white dwarf. Optical polarization of seven selected BL Lac objects in UBVRI bands was studied with the Nordic Optical Telescope from December 10-14, 1999. Two of them, 3C 66A and PKS 0735+178, were monitored for 4 nights for a total integration time of 4.75 and 5.5 hours, respectively. Other objects (1Jy 0138-097, H 0414+009, PKS 0823-223, OJ287 and BL Lac) were observed sparsely during the run. Apart from PKS 0823-223 (more polarized than observed in the past), the sources show levels of flux and polarization consistent with results at previous epochs. 3C 66A and PKS 0735+178 were intensively observed during December 11 and 12 and exhibited variability of polarization, both on internight and intranight time scales. Wavelength dependence of polarization has been investigated, as well as circular polarization. We report on UBVRI polarimetry of the recently identified Intermediate Polar 1WGA J1958.2+3232, carried out on 2000 August, 4-6 at the Nordic Optical Telescope. Circular polarization was detected in R and I bands with an increasing absolute mean value with wavelength. There is evidence of possible modulation of the circular polarization at twice the previously reported white dwarf spin period, suggesting that it is the true period and that the modulation in optical and X-ray is dominated by the first harmonic. To elucidate the dust properties in the SMC we have for the first time measured linear polarization in five colors in the optical region of the spectrum for a sample of reddened stars. For two of these stars, for which there were no existing UV spectrophotometric measurements, but for which we measured a relatively large polarization, we have also obtained data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) in order to study the extinction. The main results are: (1) the wavelength of maximum polarization, $\lambda_{max}$, in the SMC is typically smaller than that in the Galaxy; (2) however, AZV 456, which shows the UV extinction bump, has a $\lambda_{max}$ typical of that in the Galaxy, its polarization curve is narrower, its bump is shifted to shorter wavelengths as compared to the Galaxy and its UV extinction does not conform to the Galactic analytical interpolation curve based on the ratio of total to selective extinction; (3) the 'typical', monotonic SMC extinction curve can be best fit with amorphous carbon and silicate grains; (4) the extinction towards AZV456 may only be explained by assuming a larger gas-to-dust ratio than the observed N(HI)/A(V) value, with a small amount of the available carbon in graphite form; (5) from an analysis of both the extinction and polarization data and our model fits it appears that the SMC has typically smaller grains than those in the Galaxy., Comment: To appear in the ApJ, 50 pages, latex file

We report results from five years of monitoring of the Einstein Cross (Q 2237+0305) with the Nordic Optical Telescope. The photometry, mainly in the R and I bands, has been performed by a PSF fitting and `cleaning' procedure, in which the four image components as well as the lens galaxy and its nucleus are iteratively removed. The resulting lightcurves exhibit several microlensing features; one event may have a timescale as short as 14 days. Variations of timescales of several years are found in all four images. This becomes even more convincing when our data are combined with data published for 1986-89. No clear high amplification event was observed during the period. The light curves and spectra of two ultra soft X-ray sources are presented. The sources, WGAJ 1047.1+6335 and WGAJ 1802.1+1804 were discovered during a search using the Rosat position sensitive proportional counter (PSPC). The X-ray spectra of both objects show an unusually strong black body component with respect to the harder bremsstrahlung component. Based on the optical observations and on the analysis of the X-ray data, the two objects are identified with new AM Her type cataclysmic variables.

The typical extinction curve for the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), in contrast to that for the Galaxy, has no bump at 2175 A and has a steeper rise into the far ultraviolet. For the Galaxy the interpretation of the extinction and, therefore, the dust content of the interstellar medium has been greatly assisted by measurements of the wavelength dependence of the polarization. For the SMC no such measurements existed. Therefore, to further elucidate the dust properties in the SMC we have for the first time measured linear polarization with five colors in the optical region of the spectrum for a sample of reddened stars. We also attempt to correlate the SMC extinction and polarization data. The main results are: the wavelength of maximum polarization, lambda(sub max), in the SMC is typically smaller than that in the Galaxy; however, AZC 456, which shows the UV extinction bump, has a lambda(sub max) typical of that in the Galaxy, but its polarization curve is narrower and its bump is shifted to shorter wavelengths as compared to the Galaxy; and from an analysis of both the extinction and polarization data it appears that the SMC has typically smaller grains than those in the Galaxy. The absence of the extinction bump in the SMC has generally been thought to imply a lower carbon abundance in the SMC compared to the Galaxy. We interpret our results to mean that te size distribution of the interstellar grains, and not only the carbon abundance, is different in the SMC as compared to the Galaxy. In Paper 2 we present dust model fits to these observations.
