1. The multivariate fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process

Abstract

Starting from the notion of multivariate fractional Brownian Motion introduced in [F. Lavancier, A. Philippe, and D. Surgailis. Covariance function of vector self-similar processes. Statistics & Probability Letters, 2009] we define a multivariate version of the fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. This multivariate Gaussian process is stationary, ergodic and allows for different Hurst exponents on each component. We characterize its correlation matrix and its short and long time asymptotics. Besides the marginal parameters, the cross correlation between one-dimensional marginal components is ruled by two parameters. We consider the problem of their inference, proposing two types of estimator, constructed from discrete observations of the process. We establish their asymptotic theory, in one case in the long time asymptotic setting, in the other case in the infill and long time asymptotic setting. The limit behavior can be asymptotically Gaussian or non-Gaussian, depending on the values of the Hurst exponents of the marginal components. The technical core of the paper relies on the analysis of asymptotic properties of functionals of Gaussian processes, that we establish using Malliavin calculus and Stein's method. We provide numerical experiments that support our theoretical analysis and also suggest a conjecture on the application of one of these estimators to the multivariate fractional Brownian Motion., Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures

3. Estimation of parameters and local times in a discretely observed threshold diffusion model

Abstract

We consider a simple mean reverting diffusion process, with piecewise constant drift and diffusion coefficients, discontinuous at a fixed threshold. We discuss estimation of drift and diffusion parameters from discrete observations of the process, with a generalized moment estimator and a maximum likelihood estimator. We develop the asymptotic theory of the estimators when the time horizon of the observations goes to infinity, considering both cases of a fixed time lag (low frequency) and a vanishing time lag (high frequency) between consecutive observations. In the setting of low frequency observations and infinite time horizon we also study the convergence of three local time estimators, that are already known to converge to the local time in the setting of high frequency observations and fixed time horizon. We find that these estimators can behave differently, depending on the assumptions on the time lag between observations.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of hot plastic deformation on the precipitation kinetics of secondary phases in cast UNS S32760 super duplex stainless steel (SDSS). Due to their dual-phase morphology and composition, the SDSS are characterized by a favourable compromise between corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. However, during thermomechanical processing, the precipitation of intermetallic phases such as sigma, chi and chromium nitrides can occur, potentially affecting their overall performance. This research focuses on evaluating the effect of open-die forging on the precipitation of secondary phases in cast UNS S32760 during continuous cooling. Hot forging simulations are performed at a temperature of 1100 °C followed by different cooling rates. Microstructural analysis, phase amounts quantification and corrosion tests are employed to quantify and investigate the effect of secondary phases on mechanical and corrosion properties. The results reveal a significantly higher degree of sensitization in samples subjected to hot plastic deformation. The findings provide new valuable insights on the existing knowledge gap about the interplay between hot plastic deformation, secondary phase precipitation kinetics and the corrosion behaviour of super duplex stainless steels, contributing to the understanding of their performance in demanding chloride-rich environments.

5. Strangeness thermodynamic instabilities in hot and dense nuclear matter

Abstract

We explore the presence of thermodynamic instabilities and, con\-se\-quen\-tly, the realization of a pure hadronic phase transition in the hot and finite baryon density nuclear matter. The analysis is performed by means of an effective relativistic mean-field model with the inclusion of hyperons, $\Delta$-isobars, and the lightest pseudoscalar and vector meson degrees of freedom. The Gibbs conditions on the global conservation of baryon number and zero net strangeness in symmetric nuclear matter are required. Similarly to the liquid-gas phase transition, we show that a phase transition, characterized by mechanical instabilities (due to fluctuations on the baryon number) and chemical-diffusive instabilities (due to fluctuations on the strangeness number), can take place for a finite range of $\Delta$-meson coupling constants, compatible with different experimental constraints. The hadronic phase transition, which presents similar features to the quark-hadron phase transition, is characterized by different strangeness content during the mixed phase and, consequently, by a sensible variation of the strange anti-particle to particle ratios., Comment: 9 pages

6. Short-time asymptotics for non self-similar stochastic volatility models

Abstract

We provide a short-time large deviation principle (LDP) for stochastic volatility models, where the volatility is expressed as a function of a Volterra process. This LDP does not require strict self-similarity assumptions on the Volterra process. For this reason, we are able to apply such an LDP to two notable examples of non self-similar rough volatility models: models where the volatility is given as a function of a log-modulated fractional Brownian motion [Bayer et al., Log-modulated rough stochastic volatility models. SIAM J. Financ. Math, 2021, 12(3), 1257-1284], and models where it is given as a function of a fractional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck (fOU) process [Gatheral et al., Volatility is rough. Quant. 7. Local volatility under rough volatility

Abstract

Several asymptotic results for the implied volatility generated by a rough volatility model have been obtained in recent years (notably in the small-maturity regime), providing a better understanding of the shapes of the volatility surface induced by rough volatility models, and supporting their calibration power to S&P500 option data. Rough volatility models also generate a local volatility surface, via the so-called Markovian projection of the stochastic volatility. We complement the existing results on the implied volatility by studying the asymptotic behavior of the local volatility surface generated by a class of rough stochastic volatility models, encompassing the rough Bergomi model. Notably, we observe that the celebrated "1/2 skew rule" linking the short-term at-the-money skew of the implied volatility to the short-term at-the-money skew of the local volatility, a consequence of the celebrated "harmonic mean formula" of [Berestycki, Busca, and Florent, QF 2002], is replaced by a new rule: the ratio of the at-the-money implied and local volatility skews tends to the constant 1/(H + 3/2) (as opposed to the constant 1/2), where H is the regularity index of the underlying instantaneous volatility process.

Abstract

Least squares Monte Carlo methods are a popular numerical approximation method for solving stochastic control problems. Based on dynamic programming, their key feature is the approximation of the conditional expectation of future rewards by linear least squares regression. Hence, the choice of basis functions is crucial for the accuracy of the method. Earlier work by some of us [Belomestny, Schoenmakers, Spokoiny, Zharkynbay. Commun.~Math.~Sci., 18(1):109-121, 2020](arXiv:1808.02341) proposes to reinforce the basis functions in the case of optimal stopping problems by already computed value functions for later times, thereby considerably improving the accuracy with limited additional computational cost. We extend the reinforced regression method to a general class of stochastic control problems, while considerably improving the method's efficiency, as demonstrated by substantial numerical examples as well as theoretical analysis.

Abstract

In [Precise Asymptotics for Robust Stochastic Volatility Models; Ann. Appl. Probab. 2021] we introduce a new methodology to analyze large classes of (classical and rough) stochastic volatility models, with special regard to short-time and small noise formulae for option prices, using the framework [Bayer et al; A regularity structure for rough volatility; Math. Fin. 2020]. We investigate here the fine structure of this expansion in large deviations and moderate deviations regimes, together with consequences for implied volatility. We discuss computational aspects relevant for the practical application of these formulas. We specialize such expansions to prototypical rough volatility examples and discuss numerical evidence.

Abstract

We refer by threshold Ornstein-Uhlenbeck to a continuous-time threshold autoregressive process. It follows the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck dynamics when above or below a fixed level, yet at this level (threshold) its coefficients can be discontinuous. We discuss (quasi)-maximum likelihood estimation of the drift parameters, both assuming continuous and discrete time observations. In the ergodic case, we derive consistency and speed of convergence of these estimators in long time and high frequency. Based on these results, we develop a test for the presence of a threshold in the dynamics. Finally, we apply these statistical tools to short-term US interest rates modeling.

14. Log-modulated rough stochastic volatility models

Abstract

We propose a new class of rough stochastic volatility models obtained by modulating the power-law kernel defining the fractional Brownian motion (fBm) by a logarithmic term, such that the kernel retains square integrability even in the limit case of vanishing Hurst index $H$. The so-obtained log-modulated fractional Brownian motion (log-fBm) is a continuous Gaussian process even for $H = 0$. As a consequence, the resulting super-rough stochastic volatility models can be analysed over the whole range $0 \le H < 1/2$ without the need of further normalization. We obtain skew asymptotics of the form $\log(1/T)^{-p} T^{H-1/2}$ as $T\to 0$, $H \ge 0$, so no flattening of the skew occurs as $H \to 0$., Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures

We study a system of $n$ differential equations, each in dimension $d$. Only the first equation is forced by a Brownian motion and the dependence structure is such that, under a local weak H\"ormander condition, the noise propagates to the whole system. We prove upper bounds for the transition density (heat kernel) and its derivatives of any order. Then we give precise short-time asymptotics of the density at a suitable central limit time scale. Both these results account for the different non-diffusive scales of propagation in the various components. Finally, we provide a valuation formula for short-maturity at-the-money Asian basket options under correlated local volatility dynamics.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is associated with increased nursing workload, therefore a high nurse-to-patient ratio would be required. Aim: To analyse difference in nursing workload, as expressed with the Nursing Activities Score (NAS), between COVID-19 patients versus control patients without COVID-19 disease (NCOVID-19 group) in an Italian Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) centre. Study Design: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data, enrolling consecutive patients admitted to a general Intensive Care Unit, between 1st May 2019 and 28th February 2021. A multivariate analysis was then performed to assess if COVID-19 disease was an independent predictor of higher NAS and to assess which other factors and procedures are independently associated with increased workload. Results: We enrolled 574 patients, of which 135 (24%) were in the COVID-19 group and 439 (76%) in the NCOVID-19 group. The average NAS was higher in the COVID-19 group (79 ± 11 vs. 65 ± 15, T = −10.026; p < 0.001). Prone positioning, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) and ECMO were used more frequently in the COVID-19 group. A higher fraction of patients in the COVID group showed colonization from multidrug resistant bacteria. COVID-19 group had a higher duration of mechanical ventilation and longer ICU stay. The COVID-19 diagnosis was independently associated with a higher NAS. Other independent predictors of higher NAS were the use of prone positioning and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT). Colonization from multidrug resistant bacteria and ECMO support were not independently associated with higher NAS. Conclusions: The higher nursing workload in COVID-19 patients is mainly due to specific procedures required to treat the most hypoxemic patients, such as prone positioning. Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective: This study was designed to analyze and compare the cusp and apex movements of the maxillary canines and first molars during canine retraction in the first step of extraction space closure, and to evaluate if these teeth follow a curvilinear (acceleration and/or deceleration) movement rate. Material and Methods: Twenty-five patients (23.3 ± 5.1 years of age) were enrolled. The retraction of the maxillary canines was accomplished using nickel-titanium closed coil springs (100gf) on 0.020-in stainless steel archwire. Oblique cephalograms were traced and superimposed on the anatomic best fit of the maxilla (before the retraction [T0], and after one month [T1], three [T3], five [T5] and seven [T7] months). Statistics was based in a normally distributed data. Multilevel procedures were used to derive polynomials for each of the measurements. Student’s t-test and one-way repeated measures ANOVA were conducted. The level of significance of 5% was adopted. Results: Canine cusps and apexes did not follow a quadratic curve regarding horizontal movement (neither accelerate nor decelerate). Canine and molar cusps showed more horizontal movement than apexes (4.80 mm vs. 2.78 mm, and 2.64 mm vs. 2.17 mm, respectively). Conclusions: Canine did not accelerate or decelerate overtime horizontally; the cusps and apexes of the canines and molars showed more horizontal movement and larger rate at the beginning of canine retraction, followed by significantly smaller and constant movement rate after the first month.

22. Improving Drug Safety in Pediatric and Young Adult Patients with Hemato-Oncological Diseases: A Prospective Study of Active Pharmacovigilance

Abstract

The acquisition of relevant pediatric clinical safety data is essential to ensure tolerable drug therapies. Comparing the real number of Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) reports in clinical practice with the literature, the idea of ADR underreporting emerges. An active pharmacovigilance observational prospective study was conducted to assess the safety of oncology pharmacological prescriptions in patients aged 0–24 years at Institute for Maternal and Child Health IRCCS Burlo Garofolo in Trieste and IRCCS CRO National Cancer Institute in Aviano (Italy) between January 2021 and October 2023. Prescriptions and ADRs were evaluated by a multidisciplinary team. A total of 1218 prescriptions for 38 patients were analyzed, and 190 ADRs of grade 3–5 were collected. As compared to historical data, we registered a significant increase (p < 0.001) in the number of ADRs. The risk of ADR was 3.4 times higher in the case of off-label prescriptions compared to on-label ones (OR 3.4; [1.47; 7.89]; p-value = 0.004). The risks of error and near-miss were reported for 6.3% and 18.2% of total prescriptions, respectively. Of the total of 133 interactions, 47 (35.3%) resulted in ADRs. This study shows the importance of pro-active pharmacovigilance to efficiently highlight ADRs, and the fundamental role of multidisciplinary teams (oncologist, pharmacist, pharmacologist, pediatrician, nurse) in improving patients’ safety during therapy.

Abstract

We present a new methodology to analyze large classes of (classical and rough) stochastic volatility models, with special regard to short-time and small noise formulae for option prices. Our main tool is the theory of regularity structures, which we use in the form of [Bayer et al; A regularity structure for rough volatility, 2017]. In essence, we implement a Laplace method on the space of models (in the sense of Hairer), which generalizes classical works of Azencott and Ben Arous on path space and then Aida, Inahama--Kawabi on rough path space. When applied to rough volatility models, e.g. in the setting of [Forde-Zhang, Asymptotics for rough stochastic volatility models, 2017], one obtains precise asymptotic for European options which refine known large deviation asymptotics.

24. Maximum likelihood drift estimation for a threshold diffusion

Abstract

We study the maximum likelihood estimator of the drift parameters of a stochastic differential equation, with both drift and diffusion coefficients constant on the positive and negative axis, yet discontinuous at zero. This threshold diffusion is called drifted Oscillating Brownian motion.For this continuously observed diffusion, the maximum likelihood estimator coincide with a quasi-likelihood estimator with constant diffusion term. We show that this estimator is the limit, as observations become dense in time, of the (quasi)-maximum likelihood estimator based on discrete observations. In long time, the asymptotic behaviors of the positive and negative occupation times rule the ones of the estimators. Differently from most known results in the literature, we do not restrict ourselves to the ergodic framework: indeed, depending on the signs of the drift, the process may be ergodic, transient or null recurrent. For each regime, we establish whether or not the estimators are consistent; if they are, we prove the convergence in long time of the properly rescaled difference of the estimators towards a normal or mixed normal distribution. These theoretical results are backed by numerical simulations.

Abstract

Abstract Objectives Treatment persistence refers to the act of continuing a treatment as prescribed and reflects the patient's or doctor's judgment about efficacy, tolerability, and acceptability. In patients with schizophrenia, antipsychotic persistence is often poor, because of issues such as lack or loss of efficacy, side effects, and poor adherence, which is often related to the degree to which patients find the medication and overall intervention to be helpful, tolerable, fair, reasonable, appropriate, and consistent with expectations of treatment. Despite the poor antipsychotic persistence that has been reported to date in patients with schizophrenia, we previously observed a relatively high (86%) 6 months persistence with aripiprazole once-monthly (AOM) in a group of patients with schizophrenia, treated in the real world Italian clinical practice. The present study explores the longer term persistence with AOM, over a mean follow-up period of 48 months. Methods This was a multicenter, retrospective, non-interventional follow-up study, aimed at evaluating the longer term persistence with AOM in a group of patients with schizophrenia who had already shown persistence over a period of at least 6 months. The study included 161 individuals who had participated in our previous study, where 86% of participating individuals had shown persistence with AOM for at least 6 months. Non-persistence was defined as discontinuing the medication for any reason. Baseline demographic and clinical characteristics of patients who continued AOM were then compared to those of patients who discontinued the medication. Results Study subjects were predominantly male (64.4%) and their mean age was 39.7 (SD: 12.24). Treatment persistence with AOM was 69.6% and 112 out of 161 patients were still receiving AOM treatment at the last follow-up visit. The mean duration of AOM treatment until the last recorded observation was 55.87 months (median 56.17, SD6.23) for the 112 persistent patients and 32.23 (median 28.68.SD 15.09) months for the 49 non-persistent individuals. The mean observation period for all patients (persistent and non-persistent) was 48.78 months (median 52.54, SD 14.64). For non-persistent subjects, the observation period ended with the discontinuation of AOM. Subjects treated with AOM at 400 mg presented a 69.6% lower risk of all-cause treatment discontinuation when compared with patients treated with 300 mg (HR: 0.314; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.162–0.608; P = 0.001). The main reasons for discontinuation were lack of efficacy (30.6%), patient/caregiver choice (18.4%), physician’s choice (16.3%), non-adherence (12.2%) and inconvenience (6.1%). Only 3 patients (6.1%) discontinued AOM for tolerability issues. Conclusions In subjects with schizophrenia, who had already shown a 6 months persistence with AOM, a high number of patients (69.6%) continued to be persistent over a 4-year follow-up period. This may reflect a favourable profile of efficacy, tolerability, and acceptability. Larger and prospective studies are warranted to confirm our observations.

Abstract

Purpose: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of traditional chest X-ray (CXR) and digital tomosynthesis (DTS) compared to computed tomography (CT) in detecting pulmonary interstitial changes in patients having recovered from severe COVID-19. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective observational study, and received local ethics committee approval. Patients suspected of having COVID-19 pneumonia upon emergency department admission between 1 March and 31 August 2020, and who underwent CXR followed by DTS and CT, were considered. Inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) patients with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection proven by a positive RT-PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs performed upon admission to the hospital, and with complete clinical recovery; (2) a diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2-related ARDS, according to the Berlin criteria, during hospitalization; (3) no recent history of other lung disease; and (4) complete imaging follow-up by CXR, DTS, and CT for at least 6 months and up to one year. Analysis of DTS images was carried out independently by two radiologists with 16 and 10 years of experience in chest imaging, respectively. The following findings were evaluated: (1) ground-glass opacities (GGOs); (2) air-space consolidations with or without air bronchogram; (3) reticulations; and (4) linear consolidation. Indicators of diagnostic performance of RX and digital tomosynthesis were calculated using CT as a reference. All data were analyzed using R statistical software (version 4.0.2, 2020). Results: Out of 44 patients initially included, 25 patients (17 M/8 F), with a mean age of 64 years (standard deviation (SD): 12), met the criteria and were included. The overall average numbers of findings confirmed by CT were GGOs in 11 patients, lung consolidations in 8 patients, 7 lung interstitial reticulations, and linear consolidation in 20 patients. DTS showed a significantly higher diagnostic accuracy compared to CXR in recognizing interstitial lung abnormalities—especially GGOs (p = 0.0412) and linear consolidations (p = 0.0009). The average dose for chest X-ray was 0.10 mSv (0.07–0.32), for DTS was 1.03 mSv (0.74–2.00), and for CT scan was 3 mSv. Conclusions: According to our results, DTS possesses a high diagnostic accuracy, compared with CXR, in revealing lung fibrotic changes in patients who have recovered from COVID-19 pneumonia.

Abstract

In financial markets, low prices are generally associated with high volatilities and vice-versa, this well known stylized fact usually being referred to as leverage effect. We propose a local volatility model, given by a stochastic differential equation with piecewise constant coefficients, which accounts of leverage and mean-reversion effects in the dynamics of the prices. This model exhibits a regime switch in the dynamics accordingly to a certain threshold. It can be seen as a continuous-time version of the Self-Exciting Threshold Autoregressive (SETAR) model. We propose an estimation procedure for the volatility and drift coefficients as well as for the threshold level. Parameters estimated on the daily prices of 348 stocks of NYSE and S\&P 500, on different time windows, show consistent empirical evidence for leverageeffects. Mean-reversion effects are also detected, most markedly in crisis periods.

Abstract

We investigate the black holes properties with a very simple and semi-classical model of spacetime discretization. In this context, we apply the Heisenberg's uncertainty principle and the equipartition energy theorem to thereto, obtaining the same thermodynamical relation of general relativity, without resorting to the Einstein field equations. This fact, show us a possible clue of convergence between general relativity and quantum physics, which we believe becomes manifest in this class of compact objects. Finally, we apply the holographic principle to thereto, introducing the concept of surface information density and advancing the idea that black holes can be considered as very simple objects, which maximize the energy and the information content for unit of spacetime.

Abstract

We study the asymptotic behavior of estimators of a two-valued, discontinuous diffusion coefficient in a Stochastic Differential Equation, called an Oscillating Brownian Motion. Using the relation of the latter process with the Skew Brownian Motion, we propose two natural consistent estimators, which are variants of the integrated volatility estimator and take the occupation times into account. We show the stable convergence of the renormalized errors' estimations toward some Gaussian mixture, possibly corrected by a term that depends on the local time. These limits stem from the lack of ergodicity as well as the behavior of the local time at zero of the process. We test both estimators on simulated processes, finding a complete agreement with the theoretical predictions., Comment: 31 pages, 1 figure

We study lower and upper bounds for the probability that a diffusion process in $\mathbb{R}^n$ remains in a tube around a skeleton path up to a fixed time. We assume that the diffusion coefficients $\sigma_1,\ldots,\sigma_d$ may degenerate but they satisfy a strong H\"ormander condition involving the first order Lie brackets around the skeleton of interest. The tube is written in terms of a norm which accounts for the non-isotropic structure of the problem: in a small time $\delta$, the diffusion process propagates with speed $\sqrt{\delta}$ in the direction of the diffusion vector fields $\sigma_{j}$ and with speed $\delta=\sqrt{\delta}\times \sqrt{\delta}$ in the direction of $[\sigma_{i},\sigma_{j}]$. We present several arguments which favor the scenario of two coexisting families of compact stars: hadronic stars and quark stars. Besides the well known hyperon puzzle of the physics of compact stars, a similar puzzle exists also when considering delta resonances. We show that these particles appear at densities close to twice saturation density and must be therefore included in the calculations of the hadronic equation of state. Abstract

Neural stem/progenitor cells derived from olfactory neuroepithelium (hereafter olfactory neural stem/progenitor cells, ONSPCs) are emerging as a potential tool in the exploration of psychiatric disorders. The present study intended to assess whether ONSPCs could help discern individuals with schizophrenia (SZ) from non-schizophrenic (NS) subjects by exploring specific cellular and molecular features. ONSPCs were collected from 19 in-patients diagnosed with SZ and 31 NS individuals and propagated in basal medium. Mitochondrial ATP production, expression of β-catenin and cell proliferation, which are described to be altered in SZ, were examined in freshly isolated or newly thawed ONSPCs after a few culture passages. SZ-ONSPCs exhibited a lower mitochondrial ATP production and insensitivity to agents capable of positively or negatively affecting β-catenin expression with respect to NS-ONSPCs. As to proliferation, it declined in SZ-ONSPCs as the number of culture passages increased compared to a steady level of growth shown by NS-ONSPCs. The ease and safety of sample collection as well as the differences observed between NS- and SZ-ONSPCs, may lay the groundwork for a new approach to obtain biological material from a large number of living individuals and gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying SZ pathophysiology.
