Abstract

The Euclid mission will measure cosmological parameters with unprecedented precision. To distinguish between cosmological models, it is essential to generate realistic mock observables from cosmological simulations that were run in both the standard $\Lambda$-cold-dark-matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm and in many non-standard models beyond $\Lambda$CDM. We present the scientific results from a suite of cosmological N-body simulations using non-standard models including dynamical dark energy, k-essence, interacting dark energy, modified gravity, massive neutrinos, and primordial non-Gaussianities. We investigate how these models affect the large-scale-structure formation and evolution in addition to providing synthetic observables that can be used to test and constrain these models with Euclid data. We developed a custom pipeline based on the Rockstar halo finder and the nbodykit large-scale structure toolkit to analyse the particle output of non-standard simulations and generate mock observables such as halo and void catalogues, mass density fields, and power spectra in a consistent way. We compare these observables with those from the standard $\Lambda$CDM model and quantify the deviations. We find that non-standard cosmological models can leave significant imprints on the synthetic observables that we have generated. Our results demonstrate that non-standard cosmological N-body simulations provide valuable insights into the physics of dark energy and dark matter, which is essential to maximising the scientific return of Euclid., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Abstract

We investigate the approximations needed to efficiently predict the large-scale clustering of matter and dark matter halos in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We examine the normal branch of the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati model, the Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ model, a slowly evolving dark energy, an interacting dark energy model and massive neutrinos. For each, we test approximations for the perturbative kernel calculations, including the omission of screening terms and the use of perturbative kernels based on the Einstein-de Sitter universe; we explore different infrared-resummation schemes, tracer bias models and a linear treatment of massive neutrinos; we employ two models for redshift space distortions, the Taruya-Nishimishi-Saito prescription and the Effective Field Theory of Large-Scale Structure. This work further provides a preliminary validation of the codes being considered by Euclid for the spectroscopic clustering probe in beyond-$\Lambda$CDM scenarios. We calculate and compare the $\chi^2$ statistic to assess the different modelling choices. This is done by fitting the spectroscopic clustering predictions to measurements from numerical simulations and perturbation theory-based mock data. We compare the behaviour of this statistic in the beyond-$\Lambda$CDM cases, as a function of the maximum scale included in the fit, to the baseline $\Lambda$CDM case. We find that the Einstein-de Sitter approximation without screening is surprisingly accurate for all cases when comparing to the halo clustering monopole and quadrupole obtained from simulations. Our results suggest that the inclusion of multiple redshift bins, higher-order multipoles, higher-order clustering statistics (such as the bispectrum) and photometric probes such as weak lensing, will be essential to extract information on massive neutrinos, modified gravity and dark energy., Comment: 29 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, 3 appendices. Abstract

We report on the phase-coherent timing analysis of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17591-2342, using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) data taken during the outburst of the source between 2018 August 15 and 2018 October 17. We obtain an updated orbital solution of the binary system. We investigate the evolution of the neutron star spin frequency during the outburst, reporting a refined estimate of the spin frequency and the first estimate of the spin frequency derivative ($\dot{\nu} \sim -7\times 10^{-14}$ Hz s$^{-1}$), confirmed independently from the modelling of the fundamental frequency and its first harmonic. We further investigate the evolution of the X-ray pulse phases adopting a physical model that accounts for the accretion material torque as well as the magnetic threading of the accretion disc in regions where the Keplerian velocity is slower than the magnetosphere velocity. From this analysis we estimate the neutron star magnetic field $B_{eq} = 2.8(3)\times10^{8}$ G. Finally, we investigate the pulse profile dependence on energy finding that the observed behaviour of the pulse fractional amplitude and lags as a function of energy are compatible with a thermal Comptonisation of the soft photons emitted from the neutron star caps., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS. 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

Although seismic isolation devices are effective in protecting structures during an earthquake, they are generally large, heavy, and expensive, making their application prohibitive for housing buildings. In the last few years, different strategies have been investigated to make seismic isolators cheaper and lighter for housing buildings in developing countries. Lower costs can be obtained at different scales: simplifying the installation process of devices, reducing energy consumption during manufacturing, and using recycled materials. Both weight and cost of isolators could be reduced by adopting flexible reinforcements in place of steel reinforcing plates, also allowing easier installation without bolted connections in unbounded configuration. Costs can be further reduced by replacing natural rubber with a recycled elastomer. It has been demonstrated that trying to give a second life to rubber is challenging, since devulcanization process, capable of breaking chemical bonds between rubber and sulphur, is highly polluting and requires high consumption of energy. In the present work, a recycled compound has been preliminary developed with mechanical properties not significantly lower than virgin rubber. Obtained parameters are satisfactory for use in unbounded isolators with flexible internal reinforcement where internal stresses are significantly reduced. In particular, a novel compound has been properly formulated in order to be lower cost in comparison to traditional one. Mechanical characterization of the material showed excellent properties including shear modulus and hardness similar to those of a soft rubber, even if a reduced ultimate deformation capacity is achieved. Furthermore, rubber adhesion with different fabrics has been investigated. Preliminary results are very promising and pave the way for the development of high-performance and low-cost rubber isolators.

Abstract

The aim of this study is the thermal recovery of manganese and zinc from a mixture of zinc-carbon and alkaline spent batteries containing 40.9% of Mn and 30.1% of Zn after a preliminary physical treatment. Separation of the metals is carried out on the basis of their different phase change temperatures, the boiling point of zinc being 906�C and 1564�C that of Mn3O4, the main Mn-bearing phase in the mixture. After wet comminution and sieving to remove the anodic collectors and most of the chlorides contained in the mixture, chemical and X-Ray Powder Diffraction (XRPD) analyses were performed. The mixture was heated in CO2 atmosphere and the temperature raised, thus permitting the zinc oxide to be reduced to metallic zinc by the carbon present in the original mixture. Other tests were carried out by addition to the mixture of activated charcoal (95% C) or of the automotive shredder residue (fluff) containing 45% C.A zinc product was obtained suitable, after refining, for the production of new batteries. The treatment residue consisted of manganese and iron oxides that could be used to produce manganese-iron alloys. From these results, an integrated process for the recovery of the two metals was proposed.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to characterize spent zinc–carbon and alkaline batteries. Characterization is essential to any process devoted to recovering the valuable materials contained in the batteries. In particular, the status of zinc and manganese has been established to permit treating only the zinc and manganesebearing components in a recovery process, thus using smaller equipments and reducing both the material to treat and the energy consumption. At present, in fact, industrial processes treat the spent batteries as a bulk, only performing a preliminary separation with physical methods followed by a pyro- or hydrometallurgical process to recover zinc and manganese. Characterization has been carried out by chemical analysis, TGA/DTA analysis, XRPD and SEM analysis after having dismantled the batteries into the single components. Zinc and manganese are well separated in alkaline batteries while in zinc–carbon batteries the two metals are mixed, thus rendering difficult a preliminary separation by picking up the components containing the two metals separately.

Abstract

The effects of certain variables on the extraction of gold from a finely-disseminated siliceous ore by thiourea leaching have been investigated using a multifactorial experimental design. Milling time, which corresponds to grain size, oxidant (ferric sulphate) concentration, thiourea concentration and liquid:solid ratio were considered. In the ranges of conditions investigated, only milling time and oxidant concentration were significant. None of the interactions among the factors was significant. Similar analysis of silver recoveries gave no significant results. The plotted response surface obtained by regression analysis for milling time and oxidant concentration agreed quite well with experimental results.
