The role of attachment style in relation to forgiveness was investigated in 2 betrayal interviews. Blood pressure and heart rate were assessed, along with attachment style, forgiveness, empathy, and emotional expressiveness. Securely attached individuals were more forgiving of the specific offense, had higher levels of trait forgiveness, and expressed more positive emotion. Securely attached adults had lower interview systolic blood pressure and exhibited greater blood pressure recovery. Attachment style may be an independent antecedent of forgiveness.

Objectives. We present a social marketing conceptual framework for Experience Corps Baltimore City (EC) in which the desired health outcome is not the promoted product or behavior. We also demonstrate the feasibility of a social marketing-based recruitment campaign for the first year of the Baltimore Experience Corps Trial (BECT), a randomized, controlled trial of the health benefits of EC participation for older adults. Methods. We recruited older adults from the Baltimore, MD, area. Participants randomized to the intervention were placed in public schools in volunteer roles designed to increase healthy behaviors. We examined the effectiveness of a recruitment message that appealed to generativity (i.e., to make a difference for the next generation), rather than potential health benefits. Results. Among the 155 participants recruited in the first year of the BECT, the average age was 69 years; 87% were women and 85% were African American. Participants reported primarily generative motives as their reason for interest in the BECT. Conclusions. Public health interventions embedded in civic engagement have the potential to engage older adults who might not respond to a direct appeal to improve their health. Abstract Background Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) programs are becoming increasingly common, but have not been studied in low income minority older populations. We sought to understand which parts of MBSR were most important to practicing MBSR members of this population, and to understand whether they apply their training to daily challenges. Methods We conducted three focus groups with 13 current members of an MBSR program. Participants were African American women over the age of 60 in a low-income housing residence. We tape recorded each session and subsequently used inductive content analysis to identify primary themes. Results and discussion Analysis of the focus group responses revealed three primary themes stress management, applying mindfulness, and the social support of the group meditation. The stressors they cited using MBSR with included growing older with physical pain, medical tests, financial strain, and having grandchildren with significant mental, physical, financial or legal hardships. We found that participants particularly used their MBSR training for coping with medical procedures, and managing both depression and anger. Conclusion A reflective stationary intervention delivered in-residence could be an ideal mechanism to decrease stress in low-income older adult's lives and improve their health.

The present study describes a possible method by which potentially meaningless responses to questionnaires can be easily identified. Given an inadvertent mistake in the design of a questionnaire packet, we found that 10% of respondents provided invalid responses to items.

In order to explore the association between hostility and women's health, this study examined the relationship of hostility to cardiovascular reactivity during stressful, interpersonal confrontations. Prior to the task, each participant's level of hostility, methods of coping with stress, and perceived social support were evaluated. Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored in ninety females during two discussions with a disagreeing confederate. In one discussion, participants were given positive feedback concerning their performance, while in a second discussion, participants were given non-positive feedback concerning their effectiveness in expressing their viewpoint. The results indicate that low hostile women displayed greater systolic blood pressure and heart rate increases than high hostile women during the discussions. In addition, participants exhibited greater systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure reactivity during the positive feedback condition than during the non-positive feedback condition. However, for diastolic blood pressure, these results were qualified by an interaction, such that low hostile women displayed greater reactivity during the positive feedback condition than during the non-positive feedback condition, while high hostile women were equally reactive in both feedback conditions. State assessment of coping styles indicated that high hostile women may be less reactive due to withdrawal and lack of engagement during the task, while low hostile women may show greater engagement, especially when encouraged by positive feedback.
