Abstract

The properties of nuclei with extreme neutron–to–proton ratios reveal the limitations of state-ofthe-art nuclear models and are key to understand nuclear forces. 7H, with six neutrons and a single proton, is the nuclear system with the most unbalanced neutron–to–proton ratio ever known, but its sheer existence and properties are still a challenge for experimental efforts and theoretical models. We report here the first measurement of the basic characteristics and structure of the ground state of 7H; they depict a system with a triton core surrounded by an extended four-neutron halo, built by neutron pairing, that decays through a unique four–neutron emission with a relatively long half-life. These properties are a prime example of new phenomena occurring in almost pure-neutron nuclear matter, beyond the binding limits of the nuclear landscape, that are yet to be described within our current models.

Abstract

The study of dissipative effects in fission has been carried out with fusion-fission reactions by using a limited number of observables, such as the fission probabilities, the mass distribution of the fission fragments, or the neutron multiplicities. However, the large angular momenta gained by the compound nucleus in this kind of reaction could affect the conclusions drawn from such experiments. In this work, we propose to investigate the fission dynamics by the use of spallation reactions on 208Pb because the fissioning systems are produced with low angular momentum, small deformations, and high excitation energies, enhancing the dissipative effects. The complete kinematics measurements of the fission fragments and light-charged particles were performed by the use of the SOFIA setup combined with the inverse kinematics technique, allowing us for the first time a full indentification in atomic and mass number of the two fission fragments. These measurements permit us to define new fission observables for the investigation of the temperature and deformation dependencies of the dissipation parameter.

Abstract

The complete kinematic measurement of the two fission fragments permitted us to investigate dissipative effects at large deformations, between the saddle-point and the corresponding scission configurations. Up to now, this kind of study has only been performed with fusionfission reactions using a limited number of observables, such as the mass distribution of the fission fragments or the neutron multiplicities. However, the large angular momenta gained by the compound nucleus could affect the conclusions drawn from such experiments. In this work, the use of spallation reactions, where the fissioning systems are produced with low angular momentum, small deformations and high excitation energies, favors the study of dissipation, and allowed us to define new observables, such as postscission neutron multiplicities and the neutron excess of the final fission fragments as a function of the atomic number of the fissioning system. These new observables are used to investigate the dissipation at large deformations.

Abstract

However, its sheer existence and properties are still a challenge for experimental efforts and theoretical models. Here we report experimental evidences on the formation of $^7$H as a resonance, detected with independent observables, and the first measurement of the structure of its ground state. The resonance is found at $\sim$0.7 MeV above the $^3$H+4n mass, with a narrow width of $\sim$0.2 MeV and a $1/2^+$ spin and parity. These data are consistent with a $^7$H as a $^3$H core surrounded by an extended four-neutron halo, with a unique four-neutron decay and a relatively long half-life thanks to neutron pairing; a prime example of new phenomena occurring in what would be the most pure-neutron nuclear matter we can access in the laboratory.

Abstract

CALIFA is the high efficiency and energy resolution calorimeter for the R3B experiment at FAIR, intended for detecting high energy light charged particles and gamma rays in scattering experiments, and is being commissioned during the Phase-0 experiments at FAIR, between 2018 and 2020. It surrounds the reaction target in a segmented configuration with 2432 detection units made of long CsI(Tl) finger-shaped scintillator crystals. CALIFA has a 10 year intended operational lifetime as the R3B calorimeter, necessitating measures to be taken to ensure enduring performance. In this paper we present a systematic study of two groups of 6 different detection units of the CALIFA detector after more than four years of operation. The energy resolution and light output yield are evaluated under different conditions. Tests cover the aging of the first detector units assembled and investigates recovery procedures for degraded detection units. A possible reason for the observed degradation is given, pointing to the crystal-APD coupling.

Abstract

Fission is an extremely complex mechanism that requires a dynamical approach to describe the evolution of the process in terms of intrinsic and collective excitations of the nuclear constituents. In order to determine these effects a complex experimental setup was mounted at GSI, which allowed us for the first time the full identification in charge and mass of all fission fragments thanks to a magnetic separation and the use of the inverse kinematic technique. Moreover, we also measured the neutron multiplicities and the light-charged particles emitted in coincidence with fission. These complete kinematic measurements will be used to define sensitive observables to dissipative and transient effects in fission. In this manuscript we present the first results for the total fission cross sections.

Abstract

Intermediate energy single-neutron removal from $^{31}$Mg has been employed to investigate the transition into the N=20 island of inversion. Levels up to 5~MeV excitation energy in $^{30}$Mg were populated and spin-parity assignments were inferred from the corresponding longitudinal momentum distributions and $\gamma$-ray decay scheme. Comparison with eikonal-model calculations also permitted spectroscopic factors to be deduced. Surprisingly, the 0$^{+}_{2}$ level in $^{30}$Mg was found to have a strength much weaker than expected in the conventional picture of a predominantly $2p - 2h$ intruder configuration having a large overlap with the deformed $^{31}$Mg ground state. In addition, negative parity levels were identified for the first time in $^{30}$Mg, one of which is located at low excitation energy. The results are discussed in the light of shell-model calculations employing two newly developed approaches with markedly different descriptions of the structure of $^{30}$Mg. It is concluded that the cross-shell effects in the region of the island of inversion at Z=12 are considerably more complex than previously thought and that $np - nh$ configurations play a major role in the structure of $^{30}$Mg., Comment: Physics Letters B, Volume 779, 10 April 2018, Pages 124-129

Abstract

The N=20 island of inversion is an excellent playground for testing shell model calculations. The Mg chain is a region of shell evolution still far from being well understood. In this paper we present preliminary results of a single-neutron knockout experiment from ³¹Mg performed at GANIL to study the structure of ³¹Mg and of the core ³⁰Mg. The level scheme and longitudinal momentum distributions were mesured and spectroscopic factors were deduced. Negative parity states arise at low energy and the spectroscopic factor for the isomeric 0²₊ in ³⁰Mg was determined to be smaller than foreseen in the standard picture. The preliminary experimental results are compared to state-of the art shell model calculations revealing opposed interpretations.

Abstract

A method that uses fuzzy clustering algorithms to achieve particle identification based on pulse shape analysis is presented. The fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm is used to compute mean (principal) pulse shapes induced by different particle species in an automatic and unsupervised fashion from a mixed set of data. A discrimination amplitude is proposed using these principal pulse shapes to identify the originating particle species of a detector pulse. Since this method does not make any assumptions about the specific features of the pulse shapes, it is very generic and suitable for multiple types of detectors. The method is applied to discriminate between photon- and proton-induced signals in CsI(Tl) scintillator detectors and the results are compared to the well-known integration method., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We report on direct time-of-flight based mass measurements of 16 light neutron-rich nuclei. These include the first determination of the masses of the Borromean drip-line nuclei $^{19}$B, $^{22}$C and $^{29}$F as well as that of $^{34}$Na. In addition, the most precise determinations to date for $^{23}$N and $^{31}$Ne are reported. Coupled with recent interaction cross-section measurements, the present results support the occurrence of a two-neutron halo in $^{22}$C, with a dominant $\nu2s_{1/2}^2$ configuration, and a single-neutron halo in $^{31}$Ne with the valence neutron occupying predominantly the 2$p_{3/2}$ orbital. Abstract

The ground state of the proton-rich nucleus 23Al has been studied by one-proton removal on a carbon target at about 50 MeV/nucleon using the EXOGAM + SPEG experimental setup at GANIL. Longitudinal momentum distributions of the 22Mg breakup fragments, inclusive and in coincidence with gamma rays de-exciting the residues, were measured. The ground-state structure of 23Al is found to be a configuration mixing of a d-orbital valence proton coupled to four core states - 0$^{+}_{gs}$, 2$^{+}_{1}$, 4$^{+}_{1}$, 4$^{+}_{2}$. We confirm the ground state spin and parity of 23Al as $J^{\pi} = 5/2^{+}$. The measured exclusive momentum distributions are compared with extended Glauber model calculations to extract spectroscopic factors and asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs). The spectroscopic factors are presented in comparison with those obtained from large-scale shell model calculations. We determined the asymptotic normalization coefficient of the nuclear system $^{23}$Al$_{gs}$ $\rightarrow$ $^{22}$Mg(0$^{+}$) + p to be $C^{2}_{d_{5/2}}$($^{23}Al_{gs}$) = (3.90 $\pm$ 0.44) $\times$ 10$^{3}$ fm$^{-1}$, and used it to infer the stellar reaction rate of the direct radiative proton capture $^{22}$Mg(p,$\gamma$)$^{23}$Al. Abstract

The spectroscopy of 21O has been investigated using a radioactive 20O beam and the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The ground and first excited states have been determined to be Jpi=5/2+ and Jpi=1/2+ respectively. Two neutron unbound states were observed at excitation energies of 4.76 +- 0.10 and 6.16 +- 0.11. The spectroscopic factor deduced for the lower of these interpreted as a 3/2+ level, reveals a rather pure 0d3/2 single-particle configuration. The large energy difference between the 3/2+ and 1/2+ states is indicative of the emergence of the N=16 magic number. For the higher lying resonance, which has a character consistent with a spin-parity assignment of 3/2+ or 7/2-, a 71% branching ratio to the first 2+ state in 20O has been observed. Abstract

Phase reduction facilitates the analysis of networks of (weakly) coupled oscillators. Synchronization regions can be uncovered and also non-trivial network behavior can be foreseen via the reduced phase dynamics. Phase models have become an essential tool for describing and analyzing rhythmic neural activity. It is widely accepted that in oscillatory neural networks, phase synchronization is crucial for information processing and information routing. Accurately deriving the phase dynamics of interacting neural oscillators is far from trivial. We demonstrate how different reduction techniques of a network of interacting Wilson-Cowan neural masses can lead to different dynamics of the reduced networks of phase oscillators. We pinpoint caveats and sensitive issues in the derivation of the phase dynamics and show that an accurately derived phase model properly captures the collective dynamics. We finally investigate the influence of strong interactions and biologically plausible connectivity structures on the network behavior.

Abstract

CALIFA is the high efficiency and energy resolution calorimeter for the RB experiment at FAIR, intended for detecting high energy light charged particles and gamma rays in scattering experiments, and is being commissioned during the Phase-0 experiments at FAIR, between 2018 and 2020. It surrounds the reaction target in a segmented configuration with 2432 detection units made of long CsI(Tl) finger-shaped scintillator crystals. CALIFA has a 10 year intended operational lifetime as the RB calorimeter, necessitating measures to be taken to ensure enduring performance. In this paper we present a systematic study of two groups of 6 different detection units of the CALIFA detector after more than four years of operation. The energy resolution and light output yield are evaluated under different conditions. Tests cover the aging of the first detector units assembled and investigates recovery procedures for degraded detection units. A possible reason for the observed degradation is given, pointing to the crystal-APD coupling.

Abstract

The properties of nuclei with extreme neutron–to–proton ratios reveal the limitations of state-ofthe-art nuclear models and are key to understand nuclear forces. 7H, with six neutrons and a single proton, is the nuclear system with the most unbalanced neutron–to–proton ratio ever known, but its sheer existence and properties are still a challenge for experimental efforts and theoretical models. We report here the first measurement of the basic characteristics and structure of the ground state of 7H; they depict a system with a triton core surrounded by an extended four-neutron halo, built by neutron pairing, that decays through a unique four–neutron emission with a relatively long half-life. These properties are a prime example of new phenomena occurring in almost pure-neutron nuclear matter, beyond the binding limits of the nuclear landscape, that are yet to be described within our current models. International audience; Background: For many years, quasifree scattering reactions in direct kinematics have been extensively used to study the structure of stable nuclei, demonstrating the potential of this approach. The RB3 collaboration has performed a pilot experiment to study quasifree scattering reactions in inverse kinematics for a stable C12 beam. The results from that experiment constitute the first quasifree scattering results in inverse and complete kinematics. This technique has lately been extended to exotic beams to investigate the evolution of shell structure, which has attracted much interest due to changes in shell structure if the number of protons or neutrons is varied. Purpose: In this work we investigate for the first time the quasifree scattering reactions (p,pn) and (p,2p) simultaneously for the same projectile in inverse and complete kinematics for radioactive beams with the aim to study the evolution of single-particle properties from N=14 to N=15. Method: The structure of the projectiles O23, O22, and N21 has been studied simultaneously via (p,pn) and (p,2p) quasifree knockout reactions in complete inverse kinematics, allowing the investigation of proton and neutron structure at the same time. The experimental data were collected at the R3B-LAND setup at GSI at beam energies of around 400 MeV/u. Two key observables have been studied to shed light on the structure of those nuclei: the inclusive cross sections and the corresponding momentum distributions. Conclusions: The knockout reactions (p,pn) and (p,2p) with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics have provided important and complementary information for the study of shell evolution and structure. For the (p,pn) channels, indications of a change in the structure of these nuclei moving from N=14 to N=15 have been observed, i.e., from the 0d5/2 shell to the 1s1/2. This supports previous observations of a subshell closure at N=14 for neutron-rich oxygen isotopes and its weakening for the nitrogen isotopes.

Abstract

Background: For many years, quasifree scattering reactions in direct kinematics have been extensively used to study the structure of stable nuclei, demonstrating the potential of this approach. The (RB)-B-3 collaboration has performed a pilot experiment to study quasifree scattering reactions in inverse kinematics for a stable C-12 beam. The results from that experiment constitute the first quasifree scattering results in inverse and complete kinematics. This technique has lately been extended to exotic beams to investigate the evolution of shell structure, which has attracted much interest due to changes in shell structure if the number of protons or neutrons is varied. Purpose: In this work we investigate for the first time the quasifree scattering reactions (p, pn) and (p, 2p) simultaneously for the same projectile in inverse and complete kinematics for radioactive beams with the aim to study the evolution of single-particle properties from N = 14 to N = 15. Method: The structure of the projectiles O-23, O-22, and N-21 has been studied simultaneously via (p, pn) and (p, 2p) quasifree knockout reactions in complete inverse kinematics, allowing the investigation of proton and neutron structure at the same time. The experimental data were collected at the (RB)-B-3-LAND setup at GSI at beam energies of around 400 MeV/u. Two key observables have been studied to shed light on the structure of those nuclei: the inclusive cross sections and the corresponding momentum distributions. Conclusions: The knockout reactions (p, pn) and (p, 2p) with radioactive beams in inverse kinematics have provided important and complementary information for the study of shell evolution and structure. For the (p, pn) channels, indications of a change in the structure of these nuclei moving from N = 14 to N = 15 have been observed, i.e., from the 0d(5/2) shell to the 1s(1/2). This supports previous observations of a subshell closure at N = 14 for neutron-rich oxygen isotopes and its weakening

Abstract

International audience; Light charged particles emitted in proton-induced fission reactions on 208 Pb have been measured at different kinetic energies: 370A, 500A, and 650A MeV. The experiment was performed by the SOFIA Collaboration at the GSI facilities in Darmstadt (Germany). The inverse kinematics technique was combined with a setup especially designed to measure light charged particles in coincidence with fission fragments. This measurement allowed us, for the first time, to obtain correlations between the light charged particles emitted during the fission process and the charge distributions of the fission fragments. These correlations were compared with different model calculations to assess the ground-to-saddle dynamics. The results confirm that transient and dissipative effects are required for an accurate description of the fission observables.

Abstract

International audience; The two fragments produced in fission reactions induced by 208Pb projectiles impinging on a liquid hydrogentarget at 500A MeV have been fully identified in coincidence. The experiment was performed at GSI Darmstadt,where the combined use of the inverse kinematics technique with an efficient detection setup permitted one todetect and to fully identify the fission fragments in a range from Z = 27 to Z = 52. The corresponding isotopiccross sections and velocities of the fission fragments weremeasured with high accuracy. The results are comparedto state-of-the-art model calculations that reproduce the measured observables. Correlations between the twofragments were used to assess the role of charge polarization and the excitation energy gained by the nascentfragments using the neutron excess of the final fragments. The analysis of the average velocities of the fissionfragments allowed us to parametrize the distance between the two fission fragments at scission as a function ofthe size of the fissioning system.

Abstract

Advancement of the CALIFA calorimeter project has reached a new milestone with the construction of the first modules of the CALIFA Demonstrator, ultimately to be integrated into the final calorimeter. Aspects and methods of detector optimisation will be discussed, along with characterisation using proton beams of 70<<230MeV at the Bronowice Cyclotron Centre (CCB) in Krakow, Poland. Features such as the support structure, crystal geometry and digital electronics represent the final versions to be employed, enabling a full test of each component's performance. A study of caesium iodide quenching over the available proton energy range has been performed, to accompany a method for proton calibration scaled from the measured gamma-ray energies. & 2016 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

International audience; Total fission cross sections of 208Pb induced by protons have been determined at 370A, 500A, and 650A MeV.The experiment was performed at GSI Darmstadt where the combined use of the inverse kinematics techniquewith an efficient detection setup allowed us to determine these cross sections with an uncertainty below 6%. Thisresult was achieved by an accurate beam selection and registration of both fission fragments in coincidence whichwere also clearly distinguished from other reaction channels. These data solve existing discrepancies betweenprevious measurements, providing new values for the Prokofiev systematics. The data also allow us to investigatethe fission process at high excitation energies and small deformations. In particular, some fundamental questionsabout fission dynamics have been addressed, which are related to dissipative and transient time effects.

Abstract

During 2013 the NeuLAND (new Large-Area Neutron Detector) project passed the important step from prototype tests to series production. Being one of the key instruments of the R3B experiment [1] the NeuLAND demonstrator will be utilized in the 2014 beam times together with demonstrators of other major R3B components. NeuLAND is a highly granular detector composed of 3000 scintillator bars with a total volume of 250x250x300 cm3. It enables the detection of fast neutrons with high efficiency, high time and spatial resolution and a high resolving power for multi-neutron events [2]. Despite the compact cubical arrangement of the NeuLAND components, the detector is built up from individual subgroups with an independent functionality, the so-called NeuLAND double-planes. This modular design facilitates maintenance and it allows upon experimental needs to split the detector in subdetectors being located at different positions with respect to the target area.
