Prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) guidelines in Burkina-Faso, initiated in the year 2000, were revised in 2004, 2006 and 2010. The guideline document has since undergone several stages of improvement, largely based on recommendations from WHO, with adaptations by local experts in the field. Option B+ adopted since August 2014 in Burkina-Faso has enabled maintenance of mothers on longer treatment and increasing their survival and that of their children. Through this review, we describe the achievements and challenges of HIV PMTCT programs in Burkina-Faso.Aims of study: This study had the following objectives: 1) describing the historical perspective of PMTCT implementation in Burkina-Faso; 2) presenting the effectiveness of interventions at improving PMTCT service delivery and promoting retention of mothers and babies in care; and 3) determining the impact of male partner involvement on PMTCT in Burkina-Faso.Methodology: A literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google. Search terms included the following keywords: “HIV testing”; “prevention”; “mother”; “child”; “male partner”; “counseling”; “involvement”; “participation”; and the grouped terms “PMTCT and partners”; “VCT”; “barriers and/or factors”; “Male involvement in PMTCT”; and “Burkina-Faso”. Data collection took place from May to October 2015. The search was limited to articles published between January 2002 and December 2015. UNICEF and UNAIDS web sites were also used to find relevant abstracts and documents.Results: Studies have revealed that with PMTCT, HIV transmission rate moved from 10.4% in 2006 to 0% in 2015. The PMTCT program remains the best way to care for HIV-infected pregnant women and their babies. The current PMTCT policy is based on evidence that male partner involvement is associated with women’s completion of PMTCT.Conclusion: This study shows that the reduction in mother to child transmission of HIV in Burkina-Faso over the years is mainly due to the improvement of PMTCT programs. 2. Inducing Features of Random Fields

Abstract

We present a technique for constructing random fields from a set of training samples. The learning paradigm builds increasingly complex fields by allowing potential functions, or features, that are supported by increasingly large subgraphs. Each feature has a weight that is trained by minimizing the Kullback-Leibler divergence between the model and the empirical distribution of the training data. A greedy algorithm determines how features are incrementally added to the field and an iterative scaling algorithm is used to estimate the optimal values of the weights. The statistical modeling techniques introduced in this paper differ from those common to much of the natural language processing literature since there is no probabilistic finite state or push-down automaton on which the model is built. Our approach also differs from the techniques common to the computer vision literature in that the underlying random fields are non-Markovian and have a large number of parameters that must be estimated. Relations to other learning approaches including decision trees and Boltzmann machines are given. As a demonstration of the method, we describe its application to the problem of automatic word classification in natural language processing. Abstract

The safety and usability of infrastructures such as bridges, roads, and buildings must be monitored throughout their useful life. Traditional inspection methods are time-consuming and expensive, and innovative solutions using LiDAR-based techniques have developed. This study presents a semi-automatic method for detecting deteriorations on structural elements of a bridge using an integrated dataset of point clouds and radiometric information. The method involves using a Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) to obtain high-resolution georeferenced point clouds of the bridge beams, which are then filtered to identify four classes of deteriorations. Six Machine Learning Classifiers are tested and compared using Overall Accuracy and F1-score metrics. The Random Forest emerged as the best-performing. It was then optimised by reducing the input features through an importance analysis and the accuracies measured. The results show promise and can be explored further on a larger dataset. Abstract

The original version of this Letter contains an error in Figure 5, concerning an experiment performed at University of Bologna, which shows the effect of the tested compounds on microglial activation. In the incorrect published Figure 5, the GAPDH band (housekeeping protein used as loading control) from a preliminary experiment for compound 1 was accidentally shown, and the correct image is used below. Furthermore, since we used the same LPS-treated control microglial cells for compounds 11 and 12, being that they were tested in the same experiment and plate, the right two panels have been modified for clarity. This is the correct Figure 5:.(Figure Presented).

22. Perceptions Regarding HIV/AIDS and Risky Behaviours Among Prison Inmates in Southwest Region of Cameroon

Abstract

Prisoners are at exceptional risk of infection with HIV because of the association of injection drug use, tattooing, sex between men and unprotected sexual intercourse with incarceration. This study described the perceptions regarding HIV/ AIDS and risky behaviours among prison inmates in Kumba in the Southwest region of Cameroon.This was a cross sectional study, conducted among 232 male prison inmates in Kumba, in December 2015. Data were collected using a structured pretested questionnaire, and analysed using frequencies, percentages and Chi-square at the level 0.05, using SPSS version 20 software program. The majority, 178 (76.8%) were between the ages of 25 and 45 years; most, 133 (57.3%) had primary education and 184 (79.3%) were Christians. Most of them, 125 (53.9%) perceived that prison inmates are prone to HIV/AIDS, and only 44 (19%) perceived that condoms are available in the prison; 56 (24.1%) perceived that sterile objects are available in the prison; majority, 187 (80.6%) perceived that sexual intercourse exists in the prison, but only 39 (16.8%) perceived that condoms are used by inmates. Majority, 136 (58.6%) perceived that tattooing is practised in the prison, and 170 (73.3%) agreed that sexuality education should be provided in the prison. Being of a lower academic level was associated with an increased perception that prison inmates are prone to HIV/AIDS infection (P=0.030), and also associated with an increased perception that tattooing is being practised in the prison (P=0.034). These findings call for concerted efforts by stakeholders to implement strategies to improve the perceptions regarding HIV/AIDS, and to eliminate risky behaviours among prison inmates that might expose them to HIV infection.

Abstract

The central Italy earthquakes occurred on 26 and 30 October 2016. The Italy-US GEER team effort combines traditional reconnaissance activities of on-ground recording and mapping of field conditions, with advanced imaging and damage detection routines enabled by state-of-the-art geomatics technology. We describe preliminary findings useful for the broad technical community, emergency responders, and general public. These findings concern attributes of the causative fault system, surface fault rupture, recorded ground motions, landslides and rockfalls, damage to building structures and their spatial patterns, and damage to other types of structures, including bridges.

Abstract

We previously reported the discovery of a CXCL12-mimetic cyclic peptide (2) as a selective CXCR4 antagonist showing promising in vitro and in vivo anticancer activity. However, further development of this peptide was hampered by its degradation in biological fluids as well as by its low micromolar affinity for the receptor. Herein, extensive chemical modifications led to the development of a new analogue (10) with enhanced potency, specificity, and plasma stability. A combined approach of Ala-amino acid scan, NMR, and molecular modeling unraveled the reasons behind the improved binding properties of 10 vs 2. Biological investigations on leukemia (CEM) and colon (HT29 and HCT116) cancer cell lines showed that 10 is able to impair CXCL12-mediated cell migration, ERK-phosphorylation, and CXCR4 internalization. These outcomes might pave the way for the future preclinical development of 10 in CXCR4 overexpressing leukemia and colon cancer.

Abstract

Objective: The administration of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) to HIV-infected pregnant women raised the question of the association with adverse pregnancy outcomes. There is limited information regarding use of HAART during pregnancy in resource-constrained settings, where an increasing number of women need HAART administration. Our aim was to explore the association between HAART administration and adverse pregnancy outcomes and low birth weight (LBW)in a resource-limited setting. Methods: A retrospective cohort of HIV-infected pregnant women enrolled in the programme of Prevention of Mother-to- Child Transmission between 2003 and 2007 in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, was considered. Age, CD4+ T lymphocyte count, type and timing of antiretroviral drugs administration, pregnancy outcome, paediatric infection and birth weight were evaluated. Data were analysed using univariate analysis and binary logistic regression. Results: 678 HIV-infected were enrolled: 395 women received prophylactic regimen and 283 HAART regimen (115 started prior to conception, 168 started after the first trimester). Obiettivo: Il progressivo estendersi dell’impiego della terapia antiretrovirale ad elevata efficacia ( Higly Active Antiretroviral Therapy-HAART) nelle donne HIV positive in gravidanza pone l’interrogativo circa i possibili effetti avversi di tale terapia sullo sviluppo del prodotto del concepimento. Dati ottenuti da coorti di numerosità limitata nei Paesi occidentali non hanno evidenziato differenze statisticamente significative rispetto alla popolazione generale. Il presente studio osserva l’impatto della HAART sulle gravidanze di donne HIV positive in un Paese a risorse limitate, in cui è presente una maggiore sieroprevalenza e necessità di ampliamento dell’accesso ai farmaci antiretrovirali (ARV). Materiali e metodi: Lo studio ha analizzato le gravidanze di 687 donne HIV positive in Burkina Faso, in diverso regime di somministrazione di farmaci ARV (395 in profilassi antiretrovirale, 115 in regime HAART da prima del concepimento, 168 in HAART iniziata successivamente il primo trimestre). Sono stati raccolti i dati relativi a: età, sierostato, conta dei linfociti T CD4+, tipo e timing di somministrazione di farmaci ARV, tipo di outcome e peso alla nascita; successivamente elaborati in analisi univariata e multivariata tramite modello di regressione logistica binaria utilizzando età, tipo di somministrazione di farmaci ARV e conta di linfociti T CD4+ come variabili predittive per esiti avversi. Risultati: L’analisi ha mostrato come unico fattore di rischio statisticamente significativo per outcome avverso di gravidanza (decesso materno, aborto, nato morto) uno stato di immunodepressione materna avanzata, ovvero una conta di linfociti T CD4+
