We here present the first comprehensive provenance study of the Zambezi deep-sea fan, based on integrated petrographic, heavy-mineral, elemental-geochemistry, isotope-geochemistry, and detrital-zircon-geochronology analyses of middle Pleistocene to Holocene turbidites. The Zambezi Valley and Fan represent the submarine part of an ∼ 5000-km-long sediment-routing system, extending from the heart of the South African Plateau to the abyssal depths of the Indian Ocean. Sediment is derived not only from the African side, but also from Madagascar Island mostly via the Tsiribihina Valley. Being shed by two dissected rifted margins, detritus supplied from opposite sides of the Mozambique Channel shares similar feldspar-rich feldspatho-quartzose composition, although with significant differences in heavy-mineral and geochemical signatures. The εNd values of Madagascar sand are markedly more negative and TNd model ages notably older. Zircon grains yield mostly Irumide (late Stenian) U-Pb ages in African-derived sand and mostly Pan-African (Ediacaran–Cryogenian) U-Pb ages in Madagascar-derived sand, which also yields a few grains as old as Paleoarchean and many discordant ages reflecting Pan-African reworking of Archean cratonic rocks. Lower Valley and Lower Fan deposits have intermediate fingerprints, indicating that sediment supply from Madagascar is not much less than from Africa despite a much smaller catchment area, which can be explained by deposition of a conspicuous part of Africa-derived sediment in the Intermediate Basin confined between the Zambezi Shelf, the Beira High, and the Îles Éparses. By assuming that compositional differences between Quaternary submarine deposits and modern Zambezi River sands primarily resulted from sediment impoundment by large dams, we could evaluate the anthropogenic impact on natural sediment fluxes. Quaternary turbidites are somewhat higher in quartz and poorer in heavy minerals with higher relative amounts of durable ZTR species, and yield more Ediacaran, Neoarchean, and Carboniferous detrital-zircon ages than modern river sands. The Orosirian peak characterizing the Intermediate Basin sample points to prominent supply from the middle and upper parts of the Zambezi catchment in the middle Pleistocene. Rough calculations suggest that pre-dam Zambezi sediments were generated ≤ 10% in the upper catchment, ∼ 60% in the middle catchment, and only ≥ 30% in the lower catchment that provides the totality of sediment reaching the Indian Ocean today.

Distributional data such as detrital age populations or grain size distributions are common in the geological sciences. As analytical techniques become more sophisticated, increasingly large amounts of distributional data are being gathered. These advances require quantitative and objective methods, such as multidimensional scaling (MDS), to analyse large numbers of samples. Crucial to such methods is choosing a sensible measure of dissimilarity between samples. At present, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) statistic is the most widely used of these dissimilarity measures. However, the KS statistic has some limitations such as high sensitivity to differences between the modes of two distributions and insensitivity to their tails. Here, we propose the Wasserstein-2 distance (W2) as an additional and alternative metric for use in geochronology. Whereas the KS distance is defined as the maximum vertical distance between two empirical cumulative distribution functions, the W2 distance is a function of the horizontal distances (i.e. age differences) between observations. Using a variety of synthetic and real datasets, we explore scenarios where the W2 may provide greater geological insight than the KS statistic. We find that in cases where absolute time differences are not relevant (e.g. mixing of known, discrete age peaks), the KS statistic can be more intuitive. However, in scenarios where absolute age differences are important (e.g. temporally and/or spatially evolving sources, thermochronology, and overcoming laboratory biases), W2 is preferable. The W2 distance has been added to the R package, IsoplotR, for immediate use in detrital geochronology and other applications. The W2 distance can be generalized to multiple dimensions, which opens opportunities beyond distributional data.

Earthquakes on normal faults in the continental setting are relatively uncommon. The scarcity of surface-rupturing events underpins an absence of surface displacement measurements. It is a common practice to use surface offset as a proxy to understand the fault structure at depth. Hence, the lack of comprehensive surface data impedes the subsurface reconstruction of seismogenic normal faults and prohibits the thorough assessment of earthquake hazards. To supplement the available surface displacement measurements and to make statistically significant inferences, we apply optical image correlation (OIC) methods to historical images from three large continental normal earthquakes in the western United States (1954 Dixie Valley (Mw 6.8) - Fairview Peak (Mw 7.1) earthquake sequence, the 1959 Mw 7.2 Hebgen Lake earthquake and the 1983 Mw 6.9 Borah Peak earthquake). The results of this study are displacement maps with three components of deformation from which we extract high-resolution 3-d measurements everywhere along the surface rupture. The high-resolution 3-d data are used to quantify the magnitude and direction of the earthquake-related offset, the percentage of off-fault damage as well as the width of the fault zone. These parameters represent the fault maturity, geometric complexity and subsurface structure of the fault. Our observations confirm behaviours previously observed along strike-slip faults (e.g. magnitude of off-fault deformation is proportional to the rupture complexity). In addition, a comparative assessment of the results from the three study areas demonstrates that features such as excess slip detected close to the fault scarp are not unique and can be found along multiple dip-slip faults. Consequently, this study documents the variation of the quantifiable parameters along the normal faults. It suggests that while some parameters are a universal reflection of the fault characteristics, others vary according to the geology or topography in the area and should not be accepted without further investigation.

Elemental geochemistry, Nd isotopes, clay minerals, and U-Pb zircon ages integrated by petrographic and heavy-mineral data offer a multi-proxy panorama of mud and sand composition across the Zambezi sediment-routing system. Detrital-zircon geochronology highlights the four major episodes of crustal growth in southern Africa: Irumide ages predominate over Pan-African, Eburnean, and Neoarchean ages. Smectite, dominant in mud generated from Karoo basalts or in the equatorial/winter-dry climate of Mozambican lowlands, prevails over illite and kaolinite. Elemental geochemistry reflects quartz addition by recycling (Uppermost Zambezi), supply from Karoo basalts (Upper Zambezi), and first-cycle provenance from Precambrian basements (Lower Zambezi). Mildly negative for sediments derived from mafic granulites, gabbros, and basalts, åNd values are most negative for sand derived from cratonic gneisses. Intrasample variability among cohesive mud, very coarse silt, and sand is principally caused by the concentration of Nd-rich monazite in the fine tail of the size distribution. The settling-equivalence effect also explains deviations from the theoretical relationship between åNd and TNd,DM model ages, suggesting that monazite carries a more negative åNd signal than less dense and less durable heavy minerals. Elemental geochemistry and Nd isotopes reveal that the Mazowe-Luenha river system contributes most of the sediment reaching the Zambezi Delta today, with minor supply by the Shire River. Sediment yields and erosion rates are lower by an order of magnitude on the low-relief Kalahari Plateau than in rugged Precambrian terranes. On the Plateau, mineralogical and geochemical indices testify to extensive breakdown of feldspars and garnet unjustified by the presently dry climate. Detrital kaolinite is recycled by incision of Cretaceous- Cenozoic paleosols even in the wetter lower catchment, where inefficient hydrolysis is testified by abundant fresh feldspars and undepleted Ca and Na. Mud geochemistry and surficial corrosion of ferromagnesian minerals indicate that, at present, weathering increases only slightly downstream the Zambezi River.

In-situ U–Th–He geochronology is a potentially disruptive technique that combines laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry with laser microprobe noble gas mass spectrometry. Despite its potential to revolutionise (detrital) thermochronology, in-situ U–Th–He dating is not widely used, due to persistent analytical challenges. The main issue is that currently used approaches to in-situ dating require that the U, Th and He measurements are expressed in units of molar concentration, in contrast with conventional methods, which use units of molar abundance. Whereas molar abundances can be reliably determined by isotope dilution, accurate concentration measurements are not so easy to obtain. In the absence of matrix-matched U,Th-concentration standards and accurate He-ablation pit measurements, the accuracy of in-situ U–Th–He dates often leaves much to be desired. This paper proposes a solution to this problem, by using proton-induced 3He as a proxy for ablation pit volume, and by pairing samples with a standard of known U–Th–He age. Thus, the U–Th–He age equation can be solved using relative rather than absolute concentration measurements. Pilot experiments show that the new method produces accurate results. However, it is prone to overdispersion, which is attributed to gradients in the proton fluence. These gradients can be measured and their effect can be removed by fixing the geometry of the sample and the standard during the proton irradiation.

Thermochronology provides a unique perspective on the magnitude of rock that is eroded during, and the timing of, unconformities in the rock record. Recently, thermochronology has been used to stoke a long-standing debate about the origin of the Great Unconformity, a global erosional event that represents a time period of almost a billion years at the end of the Precambrian. The (U–Th)/He in zircon system is particularly well suited to provide this perspective because it is very sensitive to long durations of time at relatively low temperatures (< 200–250 °C). However, the diffusion kinetics of 4He in zircon change dramatically as a result of radiation damage to the crystal lattice. Therefore, our ability to resolve thermal histories is fundamentally limited by how well we know parameters controlling helium diffusion and their uncertainties. Currently, there is no estimate of how these uncertainties impact the inferred thermal histories. Here we determine uncertainties in the Zircon Radiation Damage and Annealing Model (ZRDAAM, Guenthner et al. 2013) that describes changes in 4He diffusion kinetics as a function of radiation damage. We show that the dispersion in predicted zircon (U-Th)/He ages for a given thermal history can be 100s Ma for a specific amount of radiation damage and that thermal histories are less well resolved than previously appreciated. Additional diffusion experiments and calibration with natural laboratories would provide better constraints on diffusion kinetic parameters.

There is no consensus about the geological nature of the westernmost portion of the Iberian Massif. In the present research, the detrital zircon U–Pb signatures of Jurassic strata of the Lusitanian Basin, known to be west-sourced, are combined with published U–Pb data for the Precambrian-Palaeozoic basement and otherLusitanian Basin units to better understand this poorly exposed portion of the Iberian Massif. Cryogenian to Ediacaran ages prevail in a northern Upper Jurassic unit, while Lower and Upper Jurassic rocks in southern locations yield mostly Carboniferous to upper Permian zircons. These age results, coupled with their respective U/Th ratios, suggest that the basin covers two distinct terranes of the Iberian Massif. Another noteworthy feature of west-derived deposits is the abundance of < 310Ma ages. It is proposed that a combination of crustal thinning in the West Iberian Margin with regional eastward basement tilt, favoured the enrichment of relatively young zircon in the western shoulder of the basin relative to its eastern margin. The detrital zircon age signatures also reveal a middle to late Permian thermal event in restricted areas, which is probably associated with the oldest stages of Alpine extension in West Iberia.

Conventional Re–Os isochrons are based on mass spectrometric estimates of 187Re/188Os and 187Os/188Os, which often exhibit strong error correlations that may obscure potentially important geological complexity. Using an approach that is widely accepted in 40Ar/39Ar and U–Pb geochronology, we here show that these error correlations are greatly reduced by applying a simple change of variables, using 187Os as a common denominator. Plotting 188Os/187Os vs. 187Re/187Os produces an “inverse isochron”, defining a binary mixing line between an inherited Os component whose 188Os/187Os ratio is given by the vertical intercept, and the radiogenic 187Re/187Os ratio, which corresponds to the horizontal intercept. Inverse isochrons facilitate the identification of outliers and other sources of data dispersion. They can also be applied to other geochronometers such as the K–Ca method and (with less dramatic results) the Rb–Sr, Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf methods. Conventional and inverse isochron ages are similar for precise datasets but may significantly diverge for imprecise ones. A semi-synthetic data simulation indicates that, in the latter case, the inverse isochron age is more accurate. The generalised inverse isochron method has been added to the IsoplotR toolbox for geochronology, which automatically converts conventional isochron ratios into inverse ratios, and vice versa.

The 40Ar/39Ar dating method is among the most versatile of geochronometers, having the potential to date a broad variety of K-bearing materials spanning from the time of Earth’s formation into the historical realm. Measurements using modern noble-gas mass spectrometers are now producing 40Ar/39Ar dates with analytical uncertainties of ~0.1%, thereby providing precise time constraints for a wide range of geologic and extraterrestrial processes. Analyses of increasingly smaller subsamples have revealed age dispersion in many materials, including some minerals used as neutron fluence monitors. Accordingly, interpretive strategies are evolving to address observed dispersion in dates from a single sample. Moreover, inferring a geologically meaningful “age” from a measured “date” or set of dates is dependent on the geological problem being addressed and the salient assumptions associated with each set of data. We highlight requirements for collateral information that will better constrain the interpretation of 40Ar/39Ar data sets, including those associated with single-crystal fusion analyses, incremental heating experiments, and in situ analyses of microsampled domains. To ensure the utility and viability of published results, we emphasize previous recommendations for reporting 40Ar/39Ar data and the related essential metadata, with the amendment that data conform to evolving standards of being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) by both humans and computers. Our examples provide guidance for the presentation and interpretation of 40Ar/39Ar dates to maximize their interdisciplinary usage, reproducibility, and longevity.

Deserts are virtually the largest exposed sand depository on earth and their interaction with the river network may unveil information of present and past routing systems. Provenance studies of Sahara, Kalahari Deserts intend to apply common petrographic, geochemical and isotopic analysis to propose suggestive sedimentological information of dryland areas.The mineralogical composition of aeolian dunes and its variability across a sand sea reflect the relative importance of fluvial and aeolian processes and the degree of their interplay. Sand seas largely fed by river systems are typically characterized by partly first-cycle detritus including various amounts of diverse types of rock fragments, feldspars and heavy minerals, generally allowing identification of a single dominant source. The opposite end member is represented by dunefields where sand is dominantly generated in situ from disaggregation of locally exposed rocks with high sand-generation potential (e.g., quartz-rich sandstones) and next reworked and homogenized by winds during several sedimentary cycles. In these cases, sand typically bears a distilled homogenous composition consisting almost exclusively of mostly rounded monocrystalline quartz associated with an extremely poor tHM suite dominated by durable ZTR minerals, as for the Sahara Desert (Pastore et al., 2021).The Kalahari Basin, which extends over twenty degrees of latitude, is characterized by a pronounced increase in precipitation from the southwest to the subequatorial north and has seen repeated changes in climatic conditions through the recent and less recent past, provides both end-member examples, as well as a series of intermediate situations. Sand mineralogy is rather homogeneously pure quartzose in the north, closer to humid equatorial regions, but presents peculiar feldspar-rich or even lithic-rich compositions at both western and eastern margins of the erg, where detrital modes with more abudant and varied tHM suites indicate largely first-cycle supply from local rivers (Garzanti et al., 2022) . The evidence shows that a better developed fluvial network can interrupt the “recycling factory” of the desert, introducing first cycle eroded sediment deflated from river flanks into the dunes.The geographic distribution of such contrasting desert types is mainly controlled by precipitation in adjacent highlands fueling fluvial discharge. In hyper-arid tropical deserts dominated by aeolian dynamics, such as the Sahara, river action may be weakened to the point that fluvial supply to the aeolian system becomes insignificant. Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) is a widely used technique for in-situ U–Pb geochronology of accessory minerals. Existing algorithms for SIMS data reduction and error propagation make a number of simplifying assumptions that degrade the precision and accuracy of the resulting U–Pb dates. This paper uses an entirely new approach to SIMS data processing that introduces the following improvements over previous algorithms. First, it treats SIMS measurements as compositional data, using logratio statistics. This means that, unlike existing algorithms, (a) its isotopic ratio estimates are guaranteed to be strictly positive numbers, (b) identical results are obtained regardless of whether data are processed as normal ratios (e.g. 206Pb / 238U) or reciprocal ratios (e.g. 238U / 206Pb), and (c) its uncertainty estimates account for the positive skewness of measured isotopic ratio distributions. Second, the new algorithm accounts for the Poissonian noise that characterises Secondary Electron Multipliers (SEM). By fitting the SEM signals using the method of maximum likelihood, it naturally handes low intensity ion beams, in which zero counts signals are common. Third, the new algorithm casts the data reduction process in a matrix format, and thereby captures all sources of systematic uncertainty. These include significant inter-sample error correlations that arise from the commonly used Pb/U-UO(2)/U calibration curve. The new algorithm has been implemented in a new software package called simplex. simplex was written in R and can be used either online, offline or from the command line. The program can handle SIMS data from both Cameca and SHRIMP instruments.

We here review what is known about the dunefields and fluvial systems of the Kalahari Basin in terms of geological setting and Quaternary dynamics and set out what has been hypothesized about the provenance of Kalahari sand so far. Previous work has tackled this problem by applying a limited number of techniques (mostly sediment textures and heavy minerals) to parts of the large dryland. The generally highly quartzose mineralogy of aeolian dunes and their compositional variability have been only broadly evaluated and several sedimentological issues have thus remained controversial, including the relative role played by fluvial processes versus aeolian reworking of older sediments and weathering controls. This reveals a need for a systematic provenance study that considers the entire basin. For this reason, here we combine original petrographic, heavy-mineral, and detrital-zircon geochronology data with previously published clay-mineral, geochemical, and geochronological information to present the first comprehensive provenance study of the vast Kalahari sand sea. Our multi-proxy dataset comprises 100 samples, collected across the Kalahari Basin from 11°S (NW Zambia) to 28°S (NW South Africa) and from 15°E (Angola) to 28°30′W (Zimbabwe). Kalahari aeolian-dune sand mostly consists of monocrystalline quartz associated with durable heavy minerals and thus drastically differs from coastal dunefields of Namibia and Angola, which are notably richer in feldspar, lithic grains, and chemically labile clinopyroxene. The western Kalahari dunefield of southeastern Namibia is distinguished by its quartz-rich feldspatho-quartzose sand, indicating partly first-cycle provenance from the Damara Belt and Mesoproterozoic terranes. Within the basin, supply from Proterozoic outcrops is documented locally. Composition varies notably at the western and eastern edges of the sand sea, reflecting partly first-cycle fluvial supply from crystalline basements of Cambrian to Archean age in central Namibia and western Zimbabwe. Basaltic detritus from Jurassic Karoo lavas is dominant in aeolian dunes near Victoria Falls. Bulk-sediment petrography and geochemistry of northern and central Kalahari pure quartzose sand, together with heavy-mineral and clay-mineral assemblages, indicate extensive recycling via aeolian and ephemeral-fluvial processes in arid climate of sediment strongly weathered during previous humid climatic stages in subequatorial Africa. Distilled homogenized composition of aeolian-dune sand thus reverberates the echo of paleo-weathering passed on to the present landscape through multiple episodes of fluvial and aeolian recycling. Intracratonic sag basins such as the Kalahari contain vast amounts of quartz-rich polycyclic sand that may be tapped by rivers eroding backwards during rejuvenation stages associated with rift propagation. Such an event may considerably increase the sediment flux to the ocean, fostering the progradation of river-fed continental-embankments, as documented by augmented accumulation rates coupled with upward increasing mineralogical durability in the post-Tortonian subsurface succession of the Zambezi Delta. The Central Kalahari is not a true desert. It has none of the naked, shifting sand dunes that typify the Sahara and other great deserts of the world. The South Atlantic passive margin along the south-eastern Brazilian highlands exhibits a complex landscape, including a northern inselberg area and a southern elevated plateau, separated by the Doce River valley. This landscape is set on the Proterozoic to early Paleozoic rocks of the region that once was the hot core of the Araçuaí orogen, in Ediacaran to Ordovician times. Due to the break-up of Gondwana and consequently the opening of the South Atlantic during the Early Cretaceous, those rocks of the Araçuaí orogen became the basement of a portion of the South Atlantic passive margin and related south-eastern Brazilian highlands. Our goal is to provide a new set of constraints on the thermo-tectonic history of this portion of the south-eastern Brazilian margin and related surface processes, and to provide a hypothesis on the geodynamic context since break-up. To this end, we combine the apatite fission track (AFT) and apatite (U–Th)/He (AHe) methods as input for inverse thermal history modelling. All our AFT and AHe central ages are Late Cretaceous to early Paleogene. The AFT ages vary between 62 Ma and 90 Ma, with mean track lengths between 12.2 μm and 13.6 μm. AHe ages are found to be equivalent to AFT ages within uncertainty, albeit with the former exhibiting a lesser degree of confidence. We relate this Late Cretaceous–Paleocene basement cooling to uplift with accelerated denudation at this time. Spatial variation of the denudation time can be linked to differential reactivation of the Precambrian structural network and differential erosion due to a complex interplay with the drainage system. We argue that posterior large-scale sedimentation in the offshore basins may be a result of flexural isostasy combined with an expansion of the drainage network. We put forward the combined compression of the Mid-Atlantic ridge and the Peruvian phase of the Andean orogeny, potentially augmented through the thermal weakening of the lower crust by the Trindade thermal anomaly, as a probable cause for the uplift. Low-temperature thermochronological techniques, specifically apatite (U–Th)/He and apatite fission-track dating, were used to reconstruct the thermal history of southeastern Thailand. This area is intersected by vast and complex fault networks related to the Cenozoic Mae Ping and Three Pagodas Faults. These were identified from satellite imagery and confirmed by field observations. New apatite fission-track and apatite (U–Th)/He data were collected from crystalline basement blocks within these fault networks. Ages obtained range from 48 to 24 Ma, with most of the samples clustering between 36 and 24 Ma. Thermal history modelling indicates late Eocene–Oligocene exhumation of the exposed granitic and metamorphic basement rocks in southeastern Thailand. Exhumation was regional and was contemporaneous with sinistral fault activity during the late Eocene–early Oligocene along the Mae Ping Fault and Three Pagodas Fault. Moreover, this exhumation occurred coevally with a synrift phase of intracontinental offshore rift basin and half-graben basin development in the eastern Gulf of Thailand. The phase of exhumation ended in the early Miocene, as a result of the changing plate-tectonic forces along the complex plate boundaries of Sundaland. The Zambezi River rises at the center of southern Africa, flows across the low-relief Kalahari Plateau, meets Karoo basalt, plunges into Victoria Falls, follows along Karoo rifts, and pierces through Precambrian basement to eventually deliver its load onto the Mozambican passive margin. Reflecting its polyphase evolution, the river is subdivided into segments with different geological and geomorphological character, a subdivision finally fixed by man’s construction of large reservoirs and faithfully testified by sharp changes in sediment composition. Pure quartzose sand recycled from Kalahari desert dunes in the uppermost tract is next progressively enriched in basaltic rock fragments and clinopyroxene. Sediment load is renewed first downstream of Lake Kariba and next downstream of Lake Cahora Bassa, documenting a stepwise decrease in quartz and durable heavy minerals. Composition becomes quartzo-feldspathic in the lower tract, where most sediment is supplied by high-grade basements rejuvenated by the southward propagation of the East African rift. Feldspar abundance in Lower Zambezi sand has no equivalent among big rivers on Earth and far exceeds that in sediments of the northern delta, shelf, and slope, revealing that provenance signals from the upper reaches have ceased to be transmitted across the routing system after closure of the big dams. This high-resolution petrologic study of Zambezi sand allows us to critically reconsider several dogmas, such as the supposed increase of mineralogical “maturity” during long-distance fluvial transport, and forges a key to unlock the rich information stored in sedimentary archives, with the ultimate goal to accurately reconstruct the evolution of this mighty river flowing across changing African landscapes since the late Mesozoic.

The Gonghe Basin on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has a cold, arid climate and has suffered severe land degradation. Climate change as well as anthropogenic activities including overgrazing have resulted in widespread blowout development and the formation of some of Earth’s largest blowouts. The blowouts are part of an aeolian dominated landscape that passes from deflation zone to grass covered plain, and then through blowouts of increasing size and complexity to transverse barchanoid dunes that are migrating into the valley of the Yellow River. A combination of structure-from-motion (SfM) optical drone mapping, ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and soil pits are used to investigate blowout scour hollows and depositional lobes. Comparisons of the volumes of sediment removed from the scour hollows with the volumes of sediment deposited within adjacent lobes varies between sites. The lobe volume is invariably less than the volume of the scour hollow. This can, in part, be attributed to aeolian reworking of the lobe, distributing sand further downwind and uplifting of dust. However, much of the difference in volumes between the scour and lobe can be attributed to the measurement technique, particularly where GPR was employed to calculate lobe volumes. The wavelength of the GPR limits its ability to resolve thin layers of sand resulting in an underestimate of the deposited sand at the margins of a lobe where the sand thickness is equal to, or less than, the wavelength of the GPR. For thin sand layers, beneath the resolution of the GPR, soil pits suggest a closer match between the volume of sand eroded from the scour and the volume of the lobe, albeit with large measurement uncertainty. We put forth two hypotheses to explain the spatio-temporal evolution of the blowout dune field. The downwind increase in blowout dune size could either reflect a downwind propagation of aeolian instability; or it could result from an upwind propagation of the instability, which started at the highest points in the landscape and has subsequently migrated in a northwesterly direction, towards lower elevations. Recent optically stimulated luminescence dating appear to support the latter hypothesis.

The left‐lateral strike‐slip Altyn Tagh fault that defines the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau plays a crucial role in accommodating the Cenozoic deformation related to the growth of plateau. However, the slip history along the fault remains highly debated. Here we report new 14–16 Ma apatite fission track (AFT) and 9–11 Ma apatite (U‐Th)/He (AHe) data in the western Danghenan Shan, north Tibet. Age‐elevation relationships and AFT/AHe age differences suggest a period of rapid exhumation with an average rate of 0.1–0.3 km/Ma from 16 to 9 Ma for this area. Thermal history modeling indicates that this was preceded by accelerated exhumation between the late Oligocene and middle Miocene (~15 Ma). A northward increase in AFT ages and asymmetric topography across the western Danghenan Shan indicate that the uplift and exhumation are mainly controlled by the thrust fault along the southern flank of the western Danghenan Shan. As the thrust fault is a branch of the Altyn Tagh fault, the rapid exhumation probably represents onset of the transition along the Altyn Tagh fault from left‐slip motion to crustal shortening in the Dangnenan Shan region. Our findings show that the middle Miocene deformation is not only recorded in the middle and northern Qilian Shan but also in the southwestern portion of the Qilian Shan, which favors a synchronous middle‐Miocene deformation model for the entire Qilian Shan.

The ultramafic–mafic volcanic rocks of Archean greenstone belts are important archives for lithospheric and asthenospheric processes of the early Earth. Despite decades of research on this context, many issues still remain unsolved. For example, the process of komatiite magma genesis and the genetic relationship among komatiites, komatiitic basalts and tholeiitic basalts in Archean greenstone belts are not clearly understood. The metavolcanic rocks of the Badampahar greenstone belt (BGB), Singhbhum Craton are studied by major–trace element geochemistry to address the said problems and better understand the evolution of melts in Archean lithosphere. Our research suggests that the protoliths of the metavolcanic rocks were komatiites (both Al –depleted and –undepleted), komatiitic basalts and tholeiitic basalts. The Al–heavy rare earth element (HREE) depleted komatiites were formed by moderate degree mantle melting at a higher depth and the Al–HREE undepleted komatiites are products of moderate to high degree mantle melting at a shallower depth. The melting–assimilation–fractional crystallization modelling result shows that komatiitic basalts were generated from Al–undepleted komatiites, and tholeiitic basalts were generated from evolved komatiitic basalts by assimilation and fractional crystallization processes. The older age limit of the BGB is determined to be 3.25 Ga. and the basement of sedimentation and volcanism was composed of plutonic felsic rocks.

This paper shows how heavy minerals and single-grain varietal studies can be conducted on silt (representing c. 50% of world's sediments) sediments to obtain quantitative data as efficiently as for sand-sized sediments. The analytical workflows include heavy mineral separation using a wide grain-size window (15–355 μ) analysed through integrated optical analysis, Raman spectroscopy, QEMSCAN microscopy and U–Pb dating of detrital zircon. Upper Jurassic–Cretaceous silt-sized sediments from the Mandawa Basin of central-southern Tanzania have been selected for the scope of this research. Raman-aided heavy mineral analysis reveals garnet and apatite to be the most common minerals together with durable zircon, tourmaline and subordinate rutile. Accessory but diagnostic phases are titanite, staurolite, epidote and monazite. Etch pits on garnet and cockscomb features on staurolite document the significant effect of diagenesis on the pristine heavy mineral assemblage. Multivariate statistical analysis highlights a close association among durable minerals (zircon, tourmaline and rutile, ZTR) while garnet and apatite plot alone reflecting independence between the three groups of variables with garnet increasing in Jurassic samples. Raman data for garnet end-member analysis document different associations between Jurassic (richer in A, Bi and Bii types) and Cretaceous (dominant A, Ci and Cii types) samples. U–Pb dating of detrital zircon and their statistical integration with the above-mentioned datasets provide further insights into changes in provenance and/or drainage systems. Metamorphic rocks of the early and late Pan-African orogeny terranes of the Mozambique Belt and those of the Irumide Belt acted as main source of sediment during the Jurassic. Cretaceous sediments record a broadening of the drainage system reaching as far as the Usagran–Ubendian Belt and the Tanzanian Archean Craton.

Point-counting data are a mainstay of petrography, micropalaeontology and palynology. Conventional statistical analysis of such data is fraught with problems. Commonly used statistics such as the arithmetic mean and standard deviation may produce nonsensical results when applied to point-counting data. This paper makes the case that point-counts represent a distinct class of data that requires different treatment. Point-counts are affected by a combination of (1) true compositional variability and (2) multinomial counting uncertainties. The relative magnitude of these two sources of dispersion can be assessed by a chi-square statistic and test. For datasets that pass the chi-square test for homogeneity, the ‘pooled’ composition is shown to represent the optimal estimate for the underlying population. It is obtained by simply adding together the counts of all samples and normalising the resulting values to unity. However, more often than not, point-counting datasets fail the chi-square test. The overdispersion of such datasets can be captured by a random effects model that combines a logistic normal population with the usual multinomial counting uncertainties. This gives rise to the concept of a ‘central’ composition as a more appropriate way to average overdispersed data. Two- or three-component datasets can be displayed on radial plots and ternary diagrams, respectively. Higher dimensional datasets may be visualised and interpreted by Correspondence Analysis (CA). This is a multivariate ordination technique that is similar in purpose to Principal Component Analysis (PCA). CA and PCA are both shown to be special cases of Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). Generalising this insight to multiple datasets allows point-counting data to be combined with other data types such as chemical compositions by means of 3-way MDS. All the techniques introduced in this paper have been implemented in the provenance R -package, which is available from http://provenance.london-geochron.com .

Optical image correlation (OIC) is a powerful tool for measuring the 3-D near-field surface displacements produced in large earthquakes. The method compares pre- and post-earthquake orthorectified images; shifts between common pixels in the image pair reflects a 2-D (horizontal) offset. The third dimension (vertical displacement) is calculated by differencing the pre- and post-topography, while accounting for the horizontal displacements. Optical image correlation has a sub-pixel detection capability, and can provide information on the displacement field close to fault ruptures (where InSAR typically decorrelates). Small-scale measurements of the distributed damage provide important constraints on the strain distribution within the fault core and the surrounding damage zone, as well as offering insights into the rupture mechanics.OIC is frequently applied to the recent earthquakes where the image footprint is large relative to the rupture extents. However, historical ruptures are documented by aerial photographs which cover a relatively small area. This means that many images are needed to cover the rupture area and all pixels in pre-and post-earthquake images which span the rupture are typically affected by the ground displacement. This creates complications for image co-registration, alignment and correlation of the final mosaics.To address this problem we developed a workflow that automatically generates a DEM (digital elevation model) and an orthorectified image mosaic. The process uses structure-from-motion (SfM) and stereo-matching approaches, and results in precise and accurate registration between the image pairs.We applied this method to the 1959 Hebgen Lake earthquake, SW Montana, U.S. This large (Mw 7.2) intraplate normal event re-activated pre-existing faults north of the Hebgen Lake reservoir and created a complex rupture network. We used 20 pre-earthquake photographs from 1947 and 70 post-earthquake images from 1977 and 1982. The final results show a 3-D displacement localized onto several prominent structures: the Hebgen fault and the Red Canyon fault, consistent with field mapping following the earthquake. A significant vertical offset and a large horizontal NS-component agree well with SW extension on NW-SE-striking normal faults. Additionally, we used fault-perpendicular profiles to explore the along-strike variation in fault displacement and to determine the extent of the off-fault damage.This work demonstrates that the application of OIC techniques to historical earthquakes can provide new information relating to the geometry and displacement of fault ruptures, and isolate the last event from the previously accumulated displacements. Additionally, the method we propose offers potential for the characterisation of historical earthquakes in general, and promises to improve our understanding of rupture behaviour through a statistical analysis of many earthquakes.

The Sahara is by far the largest hot desert on Earth. Its composite structure includes large dune fields hosted in sedimentary basins separated by elevated areas exposing the roots of Precambrian orogens or created by recent intraplate volcanism. Such an heterogeneity of landscapes and geological formations is contrasted by a remarkably homogeneous composition of dune sand, consisting almost everywhere of quartz and durable minerals such as zircon, tourmaline, and rutile.We here present the first comprehensive provenance study of the Sahara Desert using a combination of multiple provenance proxies such as bulk-petrography, heavy-mineral, and detrital-zircon U–Pb geochronology. A set of statistical tools including Multidimensional Scaling, Correspondence Analysis, Individual Difference Scaling, and General Procrustes Analysis was applied to discriminate among sample groups with the purpose to reveal meaningful compositional patterns and infer sediment transport pathways on a geological scale.Saharan dune fields are, with a few local exceptions, composed of pure quartz with very poor heavy-mineral suites dominated by durable zircon, tourmaline, and rutile. Some more feldspars, amphibole, epidote, garnet, or staurolite occur closer to basement exposures, and carbonate grains, clinopyroxene and olivine near a basaltic field in Libya. Relatively varied compositions also characterize sand along the Nile Valley and the southern front of the Anti-Atlas fold belt in Morocco. Otherwise, from the Sahel to the Mediterranean Sea and from the Nile River to the Atlantic Ocean, sand consists nearly exclusively of quartz and durable minerals. These have been concentrated through multiple cycles of erosion, deposition, and diagenesis during the long period of relative tectonic quiescence that followed the Neoproterozoic Pan-African orogeny, the last episode of major crustal growth in the region. The principal ultimate source of recycled sand is held to be represented by the thick blanket of quartz-rich sandstones that were deposited in the Cambro-Ordovician from the newly formed Arabian-Nubian Shield in the east to Mauritania in the west.The composition and homogeneity of Saharan dune sand reflects similar generative processes and source rocks, and extensive recycling repeated through geological time after the end of the Neoproterozoic, which zircon-age spectra indicate as the last major event of crustal growth in the region. The geographic zircon-age distribution in daughter sands thus chiefly reflects the zircon-age distribution in parent sandstones, and hence sediment dispersal systems existing at those times rather than present wind patterns. This leads to the coclusion that, provenance studies based on detrital-zircon ages, the assumption that observed age patterns reflect transport pathways existing at the time of deposition rather than inheritance from even multiple and remote landscapes of the past thus needs to be carefully investigated and convincingly demonstrated rather than implicitly assumed.

Active aeolian systems are present across the martian surface, with active dune fields commonly found in depressions such as craters and valleys. There are many dune fields within the equatorial region of Mars, including Valles Marineris, but the effects of topography on wind regimes and consequently dune migration in Valles Marineris is poorly understood. We investigated both the ripple and dune migration in a dune field in Coprates Chasma using High Resolution Science Experiment Images (HiRISE) and Context Camera (CTX) images. Migration rates of dune brinks and ripples were measured over varying time scales, between Earth years 2007‐2014. The dunes here are some of the tallest on Mars, with heights of up to 182 m. The dune brinks are migrating eastwards at a rate of 0.1‐0.3 m/EY through the valley due to topographical influences on the local winds. Potential sediment sources for the dune field were identified and investigated by studying thermal inertia and mineralogy. The topographic slope‐related katabatic winds travel down the valley walls and converge with the dominant winds travelling through the center of the valley, causing overall eastwards dune migration. Topography is likely the dominant control on the local wind regime; slope winds travel down the sides of the valley walls and are funneled through the center of the valley. These local winds subsequently facilitate the migration of the large dunes in Coprates Chasma, thus expanding our understanding of local winds in the martian environment.

Understanding the evolution of river systems in southern Africa is fundamental to constrain the evolution of landscape and sediment dispersal patterns. It is widely considered that the upper Zambezi River was connected with the Limpopo River during the Cretaceous, forming what was then the largest river in Africa. Crustal flexure during the Paleogene severed the upper Zambezi drainage from the Limpopo, setting the framework of the modern Zambezi and Limpopo River systems. We present first evidence—based on heavy-mineral assemblages from cores drilled offshore of the Limpopo River mouth and samples collected in different reaches of the modern Limpopo River, integrated with magnetic susceptibility, detrital-zircon geochronology, and geomorphological analysis—suggesting that the current Limpopo River formed recently in the Plio-Quaternary. Plio-Quaternary climate change is envisaged to have controlled the recent dynamics of river drainage and consequent distribution of sediment loads, as observed in many other transcontinental rivers worldwide.
