Abstract

Magnetic Resonance Sounding (MRS) measurements are acquired at 16 stations in the Strengbach headwater catchment (Vosges Mountains - France). These data, rendering the vertical distribution of water contents in the subsurface, are used to show their potential in conditioning a hydrological model of the catchment, as described in the article "Magnetic resonance sounding measurements as posterior information to condition hydrological model parameters: Application to a hard-rock headwater catchment" - Journal of Hydrology (2020). Acquisition protocols follow a free induction decay scheme. Data are filtered by applying a band-pass filter at the Larmor frequency. A filter removing the 50 Hz noise is also applied with the exception of data at a Larmor frequency close to the 50 Hz harmonic. The signal envelopes are then fitted by a decaying exponential function over time to estimate the median characteristic relaxation time of each MRS sounding.

Abstract

The mass balance of molybdenum (Mo) was studied in the Strengbach catchment (eastern France). Monitoring of rainfall, vegetation, and soil characteristics in this 0.8 km2 catchment was started decades ago. We present Mo concentrations and isotopic compositions of about 60 samples including bedrock types, perennial springs, soil profiles, and the roots and leaves of two tree species, and finally the outflowing brook. Both stream waters and bedrocks show Mo concentrations at least an order of magnitude lower than global averages. The Mo isotopic composition of topsoils and organic matter (foliage, litter, and roots) is rather homogeneous. Net biological fractionation is thus subordinate to the differences in the Mo sources. The efficient Mo recycling from organic litter to plants keeps Mo bioavailable. The Mo data, supplemented with new and literature Sr data, are used to identify the source(s) of Mo and Sr and their (transient) storage within the catchment. The resulting best model identifies rock weathering and marine aerosol as the principal Mo sources. Moreover, soil in the Strengbach catchment has reached steady state for Mo (the time constant to achieve soil steady state is calculated as ca. 50 years), i.e., the Mo isotopic compositions of fluxes to and from the catchments soil are identical.

Abstract

Assessing the spatial and temporal heterogeneity in subsurface water storage has strong societal and environmental implications, as it is key to assess the water availability for the ecosystem and society. This challenge is especially significant in mountainous areas, where the local population totally depends on springwater as a freshwater resource, while water storage dynamics is complex to evaluate because it exhibits spatiotemporal heterogeneities on all scales as a result of the topography. In this study, we compare the water balance of a headwater granitic catchment (CWB) with water storage changes assessed from in situ continuous gravity monitoring using an iGrav superconducting gravimeter (SGWSC) located at the summit of the catchment. We show that SGWSC and CWB exhibit a similar annual cycle, although they deviate in the months following winter peak flow events. We investigate the reasons for these discrepancies using a tank model adjusted to the SG signal. This shows that during these events, the effective discharge in the SG footprint area is much lower than the catchment streamflow. We attribute this difference in the drainage term to a lower contribution of the upper part of the catchment to the generation of peak flow, compared to the lower part. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Biogeochemical cycling of elements largely occurs in dissolved state, but many elements may also be bound to natural nanoparticles (NNP, 1-100 nm) and fine colloids (100-450 nm). We examined the hypothesis that the size and composition of stream water NNP and colloids vary systematically across Europe. To test this hypothesis, 96 stream water samples were simultaneously collected in 26 forested headwater catchments along two transects across Europe. Three size fractions (1-20 nm, >20-60 nm, >60 nm) of NNP and fine colloids were identified with Field Flow Fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass-spectrometry and an organic carbon detector. The results showed that NNP and fine colloids constituted between 2±5% (Si) and 53±21% (Fe; mean ± SD) of total element concentrations, indicating a substantial contribution of particles to element transport in these European streams, especially for P and Fe. The particulate contents of Fe, Al and organic C were correlated to their total element concentrations, but those of particulate Si, Mn, P and Ca were not. Abstract

The French critical zone initiative, called OZCAR (Observatoires de la Zone Critique–Application et Recherche or Critical Zone Observatories–Application and Research) is a National Research Infrastructure (RI). OZCAR-RI is a network of instrumented sites, bringing together 21 pre-existing research observatories monitoring different compartments of the zone situated between “the rock and the sky,” the Earth’s skin or critical zone (CZ), over the long term. These observatories are regionally based and have specific initial scientific questions, monitoring strategies, databases, and modeling activities. The diversity of OZCAR-RI observatories and sites is well representative of the heterogeneity of the CZ and of the scientific communities studying it. Despite this diversity, all OZCAR-RI sites share a main overarching mandate, which is to monitor, understand, and predict (“earthcast”) the fluxes of water and matter of the Earth’s near surface and how they will change in response to the “new climatic regime.” The vision for OZCAR strategic development aims at designing an open infrastructure, building a national CZ community able to share a systemic representation of the CZ , and educating a new generation of scientists more apt to tackle the wicked problem of the Anthropocene. OZCAR articulates around: (i) a set of common scientific questions and cross-cutting scientific activities using the wealth of OZCAR-RI observatories, (ii) an ambitious instrumental development program, and (iii) a better interaction between data and models to integrate the different time and spatial scales. Internationally, OZCAR-RI aims at strengthening the CZ community by providing a model of organization for pre-existing observatories and by offering CZ instrumented sites. OZCAR is one of two French mirrors of the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure (eLTER-ESFRI) project.

Abstract

Previous studies on waters of a streamlet in the Vosges mountains (eastern France) have shown that Sr and rare earth elements (REE) principally originate from apatite dissolution during weathering. However, stream water REE patterns normalized to apatite are still depleted in light REE (LREE, La-Sm) pointing to the presence of an additional LREE depleting process. Speciation calculations indicate that complexation cannot explain this additional LREE depletion. In contrast, vegetation samples are strongly enriched in LREE compared to water and their Sr and Nd isotopic compositions are comparable with those of apatite and waters. Thus, the preferential LREE uptake by the plants at the root-water-soil (apatite) interface might lead to an additional LREE depletion of the waters in the forested catchment. Mass balance calculations indicate that the yearly LREE uptake by vegetation is comparable with the LREE export by the streamlet and, therefore, might be an important factor controlling the LREE depletion in river waters. 29. Chemical and U-Sr isotopic variations of stream and source waters at a small catchment scale (the Strengbach case; Vosges mountains; France).

Abstract

This is the first comprehensive study dealing with major and trace element data as well as 87Sr/86Sr isotope and (234U/238U) activity ratios (AR) determined on the totality of springs and brooks of the Strengbach catchment. It shows that the small and more or less monolithic catchment drains different sources and streamlets with very different isotopic and geochemical signatures. Different parameters control the diversity of the source characteristics. Of importance is especially the hydrothermal overprint of the granitic bedrock, which was stronger for the granite from the northern than from the southern slope; also significant are the different meteoric alteration processes of the bedrock causing the formation of 0.5 to 9m thick saprolite and above the formation of an up to 1m thick soil system. These processes mainly account for springs and brooks from the northern slope having higher Ca/Na, Mg/Na, Sr/Na ratios but lower 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratios than those from the southern slope. The chemical compositions of the source waters in the Strengbach catchment are only to a small extent the result of alteration of primary bedrock minerals and rather reflect dissolution/precipitation processes of secondary mineral phases like clay minerals. The (234U/238U) AR, however, are decoupled from the 87Sr/86Sr isotope system and reflect to some extent the level of altitude of the source and, thus, the degree of alteration of the bedrock. The sources emerging at high altitudes have circulated through 20 already weathered materials (saprolite and fractured rock depleted in 234U) implying (234U/238U) AR< 1, which is uncommon for surface waters. Preferential flow paths along constant fractures in the bedrocks might explain the over time homogeneous U AR of the different spring waters. However, the geochemical and isotopic variations of stream waters at the outlet of the catchment are controlled by variable contributions of different springs depending on the hydrological conditions. It appears that the (234U/238U) AR is an appropriate very important tracer for studying and deciphering the contribution of the different source fluxes at the catchment scale because this unique geochemical parameter is different for each individual spring and at the same time remains unchanged for each of the springs with changing discharge and fluctuating hydrological conditions. This study further highlights the important impact of different and independent water pathways in fractured granite controlling the different geochemical and isotopic signatures of the waters. Abstract

Abstract: 210Pb activities, Pb isotope ratios and elemental abundances of leachates from soils were determined to identify the origin of atmospheric Pb and characterize its migration in mineralogically and chemically different soil systems of a forested silicate catchment. Leaching experiments were performed to separate the leachable, mobile reservoir of the soil system – mainly containing atmosphere derived Pb – from that of the residual bedrock reservoir. Pb isotope data allow recognition of an evolution in the soil leachates with increasing depth pointing to at least two major Pb sources. Surface samples collected in 2001 show a Pb isotopic signature which is comparable with that of particulate matter (PM) collected in 1995 and 2005/2006 in an urban environment close to the catchment and hence corresponds to a very recent isotopic signature of the atmosphere. The more radiogenic Pb isotopic signature in soil leachates from 30 to 40cm depth corresponds to older airborne Pb probably derived from historical mining and smelting close to the catchment (<5km). 210Pb inventories confirm trace element data and indicate that the soils are important sinks of atmospheric Pb in the uppermost part (40cm) of the soil profile. The migration speeds derived from these inventories for the different depths (0.5cmy−1, 0.2cmy−1, 1.6cmy−1) suggest that the atmospheric Pb needs less than 150years to reach the depth of 40cm. Thus, the Pb enrichments above this depth might be related to a period of local mining activities which ceased in the mid-20th century. The soil solutions are not in isotopic equilibrium with the corresponding soil leachates. Soil solutions from 5 to 60cm depth have Pb isotopic compositions similar to those of stream and spring waters and soil leachates from 10 to 20cm depth. They carry a Pb with current atmospheric Pb isotopic compositions. The presence of anthropogenic Pb in spring waters might suggest that some of it migrated rather quickly through the soils.
