The Archean Horne 5 deposit, located in the Rouyn-Noranda district in the southern Abitibi greenstone belt, Canada, contains a total resource of 172.4 t Au (5.6 Moz) from 112.7 Mt of ore grading at 1.53 g/t Au. The deposit is part of the Au-rich Horne volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) complex that also includes the past-producing Horne mine (i.e., the Upper and Lower H zones plus small subsidiary lenses) that yielded 325.4 t Au (10.5 Moz Au) from 53.7 Mt of ore grading at 6.06 g/t Au. Combined, the Horne mine and Horne 5 deposit contain ~500 t Au (16 Moz), making them the world’s single largest accumulation of VMS-related Au. The Horne 5 deposit consists of stacked lenses of massive to semimassive sulfides alternating with extensive zones of disseminated and stringer sulfides. The mineralization is hosted within thick accumulations of steeply dipping dacitic to rhyodacitic volcaniclastic units of transitional to calc-alkaline magmatic affinity. Dacitic-rhyodacitic synvolcanic units (lobes, sills, and/or domes) intrude the host succession, which is also crosscut by a series of post-ore mafic and younger intermediate to felsic feldspar ± quartz porphyry dikes. A broad and diffuse halo of distal sericite-chlorite-epidote alteration extends outboard of intensely sericite-altered zones proximal to the sulfide lenses. Gold is interpreted to be synvolcanic on the basis of Au-rich massive sulfide clasts in the volcaniclastic units, the presence of preserved Au-rich primary pyrite, Au zones limited to the sulfide envelope, crosscutting deformed but unaltered and barren dikes, and the absence of typical syndeformation, orogenic-style alteration and mineralization despite overprinting high-strain corridors and faults. Gold is spatially associated with pyrite, sphalerite, and chalcopyrite, and its distribution is largely controlled by the higher porosity and permeability of the volcaniclastic host rocks, which are interpreted to have facilitated hydrothermal fluid circulation in the subseafloor environment. Synvolcanic intrusions and fine-grained tuffs overlying auriferous zones also influenced the distribution of the mineralization by acting as cap rocks to ascending fluids. Evidence suggests that Au enrichment at the Horne 5 deposit is due to efficient transport and precipitation of Au in the subseafloor environment, a favorable geodynamic setting (transitional to calc-alkaline magmatism over thick crust), and possible input of magmatic fluids as suggested by high Te and Cu in the mineralization. Minor and very local remobilization of metals occurred in response to regional deformation and associated greenschist facies metamorphism. The detailed study of the Horne 5 deposit geology and a review of the available information on the Horne mine and recent 3-D modeling indicate that the Horne 5 deposit may have formed higher in the stratigraphy than the Upper and Lower H orebodies of the former Horne mine, which originally formed a single lens. Therefore, the Horne Au-rich VMS complex originally formed as a stacked system in which the Horne 5 deposit was deposited above the Upper and Lower H zones and not in a distal or lateral position as previously proposed, indicating that a robust hydrothermal system was responsible for the formation of the world’s largest Au-rich VMS complex.

Pre-print (óritrýnt handrit), The morphological and textural features of juvenile pyroclasts record crucial details on magma conditions at the time of fragmentation. Their study is therefore essential to better understand the dynamics of explosive eruptions. Unfortunately, the absence of a standardized protocol of investigation hinders data reproducibility and comparison among different laboratories. Here we focus on morphometric parameters, 2D crystallinity and 2D vesicularity resulting from cross-section analysis of juvenile particles using backscattered electron imaging, and address the following questions: (i) how to prepare polished epoxy grain mounts, (ii) which pixel density to be used, (iii) how to facilitate image preparation and image analysis, (iv) which sample size is necessary to obtain statistically robust results, and (v) what is the optimum size fraction for analysis. We test juvenile particles in grain size bins ranging from 2–1 mm (− 1 to 0ɸ) to 88–63 µm (+ 3.5 to + 4ɸ), using samples from the 1977 Ukinrek eruption. We find that the required resolution ranges from 75 000 to 10 000 pixels per particle, depending on the size fraction, higher than previously postulated. In the same size ranges, less than 50 grains per size fraction and sample are needed to get robust averages. Based on theoretical, empirical, and practical considerations, we propose 0.71–0.5 mm (+ 0.5 to + 1ɸ) as the optimum size fraction to be analyzed as particle cross-sections in standardized comparative studies of magma fragmentation. Morphometric analyses are based on multiparametric data sets that describe quantitatively the shapes of objects. The stochastic nature of fracture formation processes that break up magma during explosive eruptions yields mixtures of particles that have highly varied shapes. In volcanology, morphometric analysis is applied to these mixtures of particles with diverse shapes for two purposes: (1) to fingerprint tephra from individual eruptions and use the fingerprints to distinguish among tephra layers and determine their extents and (2) to reconstruct eruption processes, by linking particles formed by known fragmentation processes in experiments with particles from natural pyroclastic deposits. Here, we review the most commonly adopted statistical techniques for morphometric analysis of pyroclasts. We provide sets of objects with different shapes, along with their morphometric data, in order to demonstrate and illustrate the methods. They can be used not only for addressing the processes of fragmentation during explosive eruptions, but also for the characterization of other types of solid particles with complex morphologies.

The Archean Lemoine volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit in the Chibougamau mining district (Abitibi greenstone belt) is one of the richest to have been mined in the world (758,070 t of ore at 4.17% Cu, 9.51% Zn, 4.56 g/t Au, and 83.73 g/t Ag). It is hosted by the ~ 2728 Ma Lemoine Member of the Waconichi Formation. Field mapping, core logging, petrography, lithogeochemistry, and U-Pb zircon geochronology helped define the stratigraphy, volcanic architecture, and hydrothermal history of the Lemoine Member east of the former mine, and document the complex relationships between effusive, intrusive, and hydrothermal activity. There, the Lemoine Member is informally divided into a 700 to 900-m-thick lower part (~ 45% extrusive and ~ 55% intrusive) and a 600 to 700-m-thick upper part (~ 85% extrusive and ~ 15% intrusive). Extrusive units in the lower part have a tholeiitic to transitional magmatic affinity and are dominantly felsic, whereas those of the upper part have a transitional to calc-alkaline affinity and are dominantly mafic. The effusive felsic units are mostly interpreted as one or more lobe-hyaloclastite flow(s) per unit. Possible volcanic vent sites for all effusive units were identified. Three types of hydrothermal alteration are present in the lower part of the Lemoine Member in the study area, from stratigraphic base to top: chlorite-sericite, sericite-chlorite, and sericite-chlorite-carbonate±epidote. Within this broad pattern, three paleo-hydrothermal upflow zones are proposed, and some correspond with known base and precious metal anomalies and/or proposed volcanic vent locations.

Quantifying the proportions of certain components in rocks and deposits (modal analysis or componentry) is important in earth sciences. Relevant methods for cross-sections (two- dimensional exposures) of clastic rocks include point counts or line counts. The accuracy of these methods has been supposed to be good in the literature but not necessarily verified empirically. Natural materials are inappropriate for assessing accuracy because the true proportions of each component are unknown. The precision of modal analysis methods has traditionally been evaluated from statistical models (primarily the normal approximation to the binomial distribution) but again rarely verified in practice because it is also extremely difficult to obtain different slices through the same material at outcrop scale. Here we create a set of numerical models of red and blue spheres with different proportions and sizes and cut 60 slices through the models, on which we perform point counts and line counts. We show that both of these methods are indeed able to retrieve the correct volumetric proportions of components, on average, when enough fragments are counted or intersected. As already known, precision is controlled by component abundance and the number of points counted or clasts intersected. However, we show that other important factors include differences between slices, which are relevant for our unequal-size models, and the proportion of voids, matrix, and/or cement in the rock. We present empirical precision charts for clast counts and line counts based on our models and make recommendations for future field studies.

Several volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits have been mined in the Archean Matagami mining district (Abitibi subprovince, Quebec, Canada), but the volcanology of their host rocks has been little studied. Most VMS lenses are located along a stratigraphic marker known as the Key tuffite. Footwall rocks belong to the Watson Lake Group (tholeiitic dacite and rhyolite), whereas hanging-wall rocks belong to the Wabassee Group (tholeiitic basalt and tholeiitic to transitional andesite, with lesser tholeiitic felsic volcanic rocks). All felsic units of the South Flank are interpreted as lobe-hyaloclastite lava flows. For most felsic units, many such flows are juxtaposed and stacked. A significant proportion of the units is made up of fragmental rocks, especially at the top of the Watson Lake Group in some specific areas where the VMS deposits sit. Where hyaloclastite is well developed, conditions were favorable for subseafloor replacement-style VMS deposits, as is the case at Bracemac-McLeod, the currently producing mine. There, sheet-shaped ore lenses were emplaced under a capping unit, the massive core of a hanging-wall lobe-hyaloclastite flow. The proximal footwall chlorite alteration zone is subconcordant. Abundant hyaloclastite is also present at the 25 Mt Mattagami Lake deposit, and similar ore-forming conditions are inferred. In other places, fragmental rocks were less developed at the top of the Watson Lake rhyolite, and sulfides formed mounds on the sea floor, with a discordant chlorite pipe underneath. Therefore, several styles of VMS mineralization can be considered in a single mining district, even at a specific marker horizon, depending on the volcanic facies found in the host sequence.

Classification of rock types using geochemical variables is widely used in geosciences, but most standard classification methods are restricted to the simultaneous use of two or three variables at a time. Machine learning-based methods allow for a multivariate approach to classification problems, potentially increasing classification success rates. Here a series of multivariate machine learning classification algorithms, together with different sets of lithogeochemistry-derived variables, are tested on samples collected at the Lalor Zn-Cu-Au volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit, to discriminate volcanic units and alteration types. Support Vector Machine and Ensemble method algorithms give the best performance on both classification exercises. Untransformed chemical element concentrations with high classification power are the best-performing variables. Classification success rates are equal or better than those obtained using standard classification methods and are satisfactory enough for the use of the resulting predictions for 2D and 3D modelling of geological units.

The Hopi Buttes volcanic field (HBVF) is located on the Colorado Plateau, Northern Arizona. In this Miocene volcanic field, the erosion level increases southward, allowing the study of maar-diatreme volcanoes from top (posteruptive crater infill and ejecta ring) to bottom (lower diatreme). The Twin Peaks volcanic complex consists mostly of two hills (North Peak and South Peak) with thick lavas at their summits and pyroclastic rocks underneath. In the HBVF, such volcanic remnants have received little scientific attention so far, despite their relative abundance. Our field observations allow us to interpret the North and South Peaks as remnants of two maar-diatreme volcanoes which evolved into lava lakes filling the craters. Within the complex, we distinguish four volcanic units (from unit 1 at the bottom to unit 4 at the top). On the basis of the field description of the deposits and the componentry measurements, we suggest that unit 1 is phreatomagmatic, unit 2 is phreato-strombolian (with mixed phreatomagmatic and strombolian characteristics), unit 3a is phreato-hawaiian (with mixed phreatomagmatic and hawaiian characteristics), unit 3b is hawaiian (formed by lava fountains) and unit 4 consists of lava lakes filling the maar craters. There is therefore a progressive evolution from a purely phreatomagmatic eruptive style, which excavated the craters and diatremes and partly filled them, to magmatic explosive to nonexplosive eruptive styles, which filled the maar craters up to the pre-eruptive surface. We discuss traditional criteria used to distinguish phreatomagmatic from magmatic eruptive styles in ultramafic to mafic maar-diatreme volcanoes.

Round Butte is a small but complex Miocene diatreme that crops out ~ 190 m below the pre-eruptive surface, in the southeastern part of the Hopi Buttes volcanic field. Erosional remnants consist of a diatreme 170–190 m in diameter, of which the central 130–150 m is well-exposed in a massif featuring 20–30-m-high sub-vertical cliffs, and a 50-cm-thick basanite dike. Field mapping allowed us to define three main groups of pyroclastic rocks in the diatreme: undisturbed beds, disturbed beds, and non-bedded rocks. Pyroclastic rocks range in grain size from coarse tuff to tuff breccia and in componentry from juvenile-rich to lithic-rich, with a dominance of heterolithic lapilli tuffs. Rocks from the undisturbed bedded pyroclastic group are present above an unconformity found all around the massif, whereas the disturbed bedded and the non-bedded pyroclastic groups are always found below it. This unconformity was previously understood as the contact between the upper and the lower diatremes. The undisturbed beds above the unconformity indeed compose the upper diatreme, but the assemblage of non-bedded rocks (invasive columns) and disturbed beds (residual columns) below it is not typical of the lower diatreme. Instead, they represent a transition zone between the upper and lower diatremes. Such a transition zone also occurs in other diatremes, it is important genetically, and we propose to add it to the general model of maar-diatreme volcanoes.

Round Butte (Hopi Buttes volcanic field, Arizona) exposes a diatreme 170–190 m across, 190 m below the pre-eruptive surface. The central part of the massif is 130–150 m in diameter, displaying 20–30 m-high subvertical cliffs. The well-known layer-cake stratigraphy of the sedimentary rocks of the Colorado Plateau permits identification of the largest lithic fragments preserved in the Round Butte diatreme. We define three main groups of pyroclastic facies: undisturbed beds, disturbed beds and non-bedded rocks. Two other minor facies groups were mapped: megablocks (blocks over 2 m in long axis), and small-volume debris avalanche deposits. Pyroclastic megablocks are finer grained and richer in lithic clasts than most diatreme rocks surrounding them. These pyroclastic megablocks are interpreted as subsided portions of the maar ejecta ring. Sedimentary megablocks originate either from above, or from the same level, relative to their current location, i.e. no megablock has a net upward displacement. Small-volume debris avalanche deposits are poorly sorted deposits resulting from gravitational destabilization of the surrounding country rocks into the syn-eruptive crater. Small-volume debris avalanches and individual megablock collapse are the main ways in which the crater grew in size laterally during the eruption. We combine the componentry of the disturbed bedded pyroclastic facies, the non-bedded pyroclastic facies and the pyroclastic megablocks with a series of conceptual models for country rock fragmentation. This exercise further allows us to estimate diatreme wall slopes of 70° below the Bidahochi Formation to approximately the depth of the root zone around 440 m below the pre-eruptive surface. Lithic fragments at the current level of exposure come from elevations up to 190 m above (i.e., up to the pre-eruptive surface) and up to 250 m below (i.e., down to the root zone) their current locations. Pyroclastic units displaying the richest content of lithic clasts with a deep origin are typically the non-bedded facies interpreted to have formed from debris jets during the eruption.

Physical property measurements are increasingly important in mining exploration. For density determinations on rocks, one method applicable on exploration drill cores relies on gamma ray attenuation. This non-destructive method is ideal because each measurement takes only 10 s, making it suitable for high-resolution logging. However calibration has been problematic. In this paper we present new empirical, site-specific correction equations for whole NQ and BQ cores. The corrections force back the gamma densities to the “true” values established by the immersion method. For the NQ core caliber, the density range extends to high values (massive pyrite, ~ 5 g/cm3) and the correction is thought to be very robust. We also present additional empirical correction factors for cut cores which take into account the missing material. These “cut core correction factors”, which are not site-specific, were established by making gamma density measurements on truncated aluminum cylinders of various residual thicknesses. Finally we show two examples of application for the Abitibi Greenstone Belt in Canada. The gamma ray attenuation measurement system is part of a multi-sensor core logger which also determines magnetic susceptibility, geochemistry and mineralogy on rock cores, and performs line-scan imaging.

In mineral exploration, traditional core logging is largely based on the visual inspection of drilled cores, a process which is often subjective and non-reproducible. However, a number of physical, chemical and mineralogical properties of rocks can now be measured at high spatial resolution on drill cores. The resulting large multiparameter databases can help geologists to quantitatively discriminate between lithologies, study hydrothermal alteration, and potentially vector towards mineralization. Multivariate statistical methods are important tools to assist geologists in interpreting such large databases. We present an application of model-based cluster analysis in the Matagami base metal mining district, more specifically to improve lithological discrimination at the zinc-rich Bracemac and McLeod volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits. The model-based cluster analysis method is able to efficiently discriminate different geological units encountered, even in cases where two units are visually similar or in the presence of strong hydrothermal alteration.

Multiparameter data on drill cores have a range of useful applications for ore deposit modeling and mineral exploration. Density, magnetic susceptibility, eight major elements, seven trace elements (portable X-ray fluorescence [pXRF]), five mineral groups (near-infrared spectrometry), and average visible light reflectance were determined on rock cores from several drill holes. These are located near the Archean Lemoine auriferous volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit in the Chibougamau mining district, Abitibi subprovince, Quebec, Canada. This case study focuses on one particular drill hole that has been recently characterized in detail by conventional methods (laboratory geochemistry, petrography, and stable isotopes); this provides validation for the multisensor dataset. The best variables and immobile element ratios to distinguish between different lithological units in the multiparameter data are density, magnetic susceptibility, Ti/Zr, Al/Zr, and Zr/Y. Downhole profiles of these parameters allow the four different felsic units in LEM-37, many of which are visually similar, to be distinguished, and geologic contacts to be positioned precisely. Such methods would be even more useful in environments where recognition of primary characteristics is strongly hampered by intense hydrothermal alteration and superimposed deformation or metamorphism. Volcanic and intrusive rocks can be placed on classic diagrams to assign them names and magmatic affinities based on the corrected pXRF data. Downhole profiles of major and trace elements, combined with infrared mineralogy, allow hydrothermal alteration to be characterized, yielding results comparable to those of conventional techniques for the same drill hole, but with a much tighter spacing and within potentially shorter time frames.

Large igneous provinces (LIPs) form in both oceanic and continental settings by the emplacement and eruption of voluminous magmas ranging from basalt to rhyolite in composition. Continental flood basalt provinces are the best studied LIPs and consist of crustal intrusive systems, extensive flood lavas and ignimbrites, and mafic volcaniclastic deposits in varying proportions. Intrusive rocks are inferred to represent the solidified remnants of a plumbing system that fed eruptions at the surface, as well as themselves representing substantial accumulations of magma in the subsurface. The vast majority of intrusive rock within the upper crust is in widespread sills, the emplacement of which may structurally isolate and dismember upper crustal strata from underlying basement, as well as spawning dyke assemblages of complex geometry. Interaction of dykes and shoaling sills with near-surface aquifers is implicated in development of mafic volcaniclastic deposits which, in better-studied provinces, comprise large vent complexes and substantial primary volcaniclastic deposits. Flood lavas generally postdate and overlie mafic volcaniclastic deposits, and are emplaced as pahoehoe flows at a grand scale (up to 104 km2) from eruptions lasting years to decades. As with modern Hawaiian analogues, pahoehoe flood lavas have erupted from fissure vents that sometimes show evidence of high lava fountains at times during eruption. In contrast to basaltic provinces, in which volcaniclastic deposits are significant but not dominant, silicic LIPs are dominated by deposits of explosive volcanism, although they also contain variably significant contributions from widespread lavas. Few vent sites have been identified for silicic eruptive units in LIPs, but it has been recognized that some ignimbrites have also been erupted from fissure-like vents. Although silicic LIPs are an important, albeit less common, expression of LIP events along continental margins, the large volumes of easily erodible primary volcaniclastic deposits result in these provinces also having a significant sedimentary signature in the geologic record. The inter-relationships between flood basalt lavas and volcaniclastic deposits during LIP formation can provide important constraints on the relative timings between LIP magmatism, extension, kilometre-scale uplift and palaeoenvironmental changes. Cathedral Cliff is a well-exposed mid-Tertiary phreatomagmatic diatreme in the Navajo volcanic field, New Mexico. Post-eruptive erosion, estimated between 500 and 1000 m, exposes the deep part of the diatreme. Cathedral Cliff provides an opportunity to examine the transition between the bedded pyroclastic rocks of an upper diatreme and the nonbedded pyroclastic rocks of the subjacent lower diatreme. Bedded pyroclastic rocks occupy 49% of the mapped diatreme area, nonbedded pyroclastic rocks occupy 45%, and the remaining 6% consist of sedimentary megablocks. The bedded pyroclastic rocks range from coarse tuff to medium lapilli tuff and from lithic to juvenile rich. They were emplaced during eruption at the bottom of the crater by pyroclastic density currents, pyroclastic fallout, and as ballistic bombs and blocks. As the eruption continued, they subsided into the diatreme to their current location. Bedding ranges from well-preserved (“continuous beds”) to partially destroyed (“broken beds”). Syn-eruptive subsidence, the passage of debris jets through the broken beds, as well as a concentration of explosions nearby, explains the partial destruction of the bedding. The nonbedded pyroclastic rocks are massive and poorly sorted and consist of coarse tuff, lapilli tuff, and tuff breccia. On average, they are coarser grained and more juvenile rich than the bedded rocks. Nonbedded rocks form zones with steep contacts that cross-cut each other and the bedded rocks. In places, they have gradual transitions into broken beds. We interpret the nonbedded rocks as formed by the passage of debris jets through existing diatreme infill and from the destruction and recycling of the bedded deposits, with juvenile clast enrichment due to dike fragmentation.

One geoscience application of portable XRF (pXRF) technology is acquiring ‘whole-rock’ analyses of unmineralized or weakly mineralized rock cores for major oxides and trace elements, to fill the gaps between traditional laboratory analyses and/or obtain geochemical data more quickly. But the question of whether the samples actually need to be crushed and pulverized before analysis to produce useful results has not been extensively studied. In this paper pXRF data quality is compared on unprepared rock cores and on powders in three ways: instrumental precision (relative standard deviation [RSD] of a series of measurements on the same spot), sample precision (for unprepared samples, RSD of a series of measurements on different spots on the core), and accuracy (average pXRF value versus laboratory geochemistry). Two Olympus Innov-X Delta Premium pXRF devices were tested on 27 core samples of dense, non-mineralized, fine- to medium-grained, Precambrian volcanic and intrusive rocks from Canada. In general, sample preparation does not improve instrumental precision or accuracy. The significant advantage of powders is to avoid mineralogical heterogeneity. However, sample precision for in situ data is improved by averaging multiple measurements of different points on the sample: a significant gain is obtained between three and seven measurements. The sample precisions at 25 points – which is about the most measurements one can make during the same amount of time used for powdering a rock core sample – are better than the instrumental precision on powders for most elements. For high spatial resolution down-hole element profiles on entire drill-holes, in situ pXRF measurements with smoothing (e.g. 3–5 point moving averages) provide fit-for-purpose data; the alternative of turning the entire drill-core into powder is not realistic.

In French Guiana, the Montagne d’Or gold deposit (5 Moz at 1.5 g/t Au) is located in the northern branch of the Rhyacian Paramaca Greenstone Belt. The sulphide deposit is hosted by a south-facing bimodal volcanic and volcaniclastic sequence that is highly strained and affected by a penetrative E-W striking and steeply south-dipping foliation. The volcanic sequence is composed of three members, (1) the Lower unit in the stratigraphic footwall, (2) a bimodal mafic-felsic formation hosting the orebody, and (3) the Upper sedimentary and volcanic rocks unit in the stratigraphic hanging-wall. The bimodal formation is dominated by calc-alkaline felsic volcanic rocks in the west, interbedded/interdigitated with tholeiitic mafic rocks in the east. Pillowed mafic flows and graded-bedded felsic volcaniclastic rocks collectively indicate effusive to explosive volcanic activity in a submarine environment. The mineralization consists of thick and laterally extensive sulphide zones forming (1) stratiform sulphide disseminations, (2) structurally-transposed stringer stockworks, and (3) thin layers of deformed semi-massive sulphides. The gold-rich sulphide mineralization consists mainly of pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite with minor sphalerite, magnetite, galena and arsenopyrite, hosted by chlorite-sericite-rich alteration zones mainly developed in the felsic tuff facies. U-Pb zircon geochronology shows that most of the Montagne d’Or volcanic and intrusive sequence has crystallized during a multi-cycle magmatic event, from ca. 2152 Ma to ca. 2130 Ma. A porphyry intrusion crosscutting the ore yields a U-Pb zircon age of 2117.6 ± 5.1 Ma, hence constraining a minimum age for the auriferous sulphide mineralization. This also indicates that the sulphide mineralization was coeval with arc magmatism, demonstrating the volcanogenic nature of the Montagne d’Or gold deposit.

Mining exploration increasingly relies on large, multivariate databases storing data ranging from drill core geochemical analysis to geophysical data or geological descriptions. Utilizing these large datasets to their full potential implies the use of multivariate statistical analysis such as machine learning. The Random Forest algorithm has proved its efficiency in mining applications. In this study we use it to estimate a key geochemical element, sodium, using a multivariate chemo-physical dataset measured on drill cores in the Matagami mining district of Quebec, Canada. Sodium is important to characterize hydrothermal alteration in volcanogenic massive sulfide settings, since Na depletion can be used to vector towards ore, but this element is not readily measured by portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF). We first test the algorithm on a database of over 8000 traditional laboratory geochemistry analyses and find a correlation of 0.95 between estimated and measured Na. We then test the algorithm on the multi-sensor core logging data, including density, magnetic susceptibility, and 15 geochemical elements by pXRF, but borrowing Na from traditional geochemistry (n = 260). This yields correlations of 0.66 to 0.75 depending on the training and testing sets. Finally the algorithm is applied to the whole multiparameter database (n = 9675) to estimate Na downcore. There is a good general correspondence with the downcore Na patterns seen through traditional geochemistry, and the estimated Na which has much greater spatial resolution. Random Forest appears to be a very good estimation tool when using large amounts of data and variables, as it uses all variables and automatically prioritizes the most useful. This method also allows visualization of the weight of each variable in the estimation. Future studies should compare RF with other methods.

Archean greenstone terranes are key to understanding the geological processes active during early Earth history. These areas are also of economic interest due to their association with volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) deposits, and several other types of mineral deposits. The Archean Colomb-Chaboullie greenstone belt is located between the Nemiscau and Opatica subprovinces of the Superior Province, Quebec, Canada. This belt comprises three submarine volcanic units: pillowed to massive basaltic lavas, variably porphyritic massive to pillowed intermediate lavas (±intrusions), and intermediate to felsic volcaniclastic rocks. The calc-alkaline intermediate lavas and volcaniclastic assemblages are intercalated with the tholeiitic to transitional basaltic lavas. This implies that these volcanic rocks were contemporaneously formed within a limited geographical area. The major element trends of the basalts are explained by crystal fractionation while the trace elements are influenced by independently occurring minor degrees of crustal contamination. The major and trace element geochemistry of the calc-alkaline rocks share many geochemical characteristics with pre-existing crustal contaminants. We therefore propose that the intermediate and felsic assemblages were produced via crustal contamination and mixing processes within a pre-existing magma chamber. The basalts spent less time in the crust and had a more direct passage to the surface. Massive to semi-massive Au-Ag-Cu showings along with associated paleo-hydrothermal manifestations are dominantly associated with the basaltic lavas, and show evidence of a syn-volcanic origin. Chemo-stratigraphy, in conjunction with detailed mapping of the gold-bearing Lac Marcaut VMS showing, allows a basalt-basalt contact to be identified, which may be favourable for exploration elsewhere in the Colomb-Chaboullie belt.

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) analysers are increasingly popular tools for geoscientific applications, including mineral exploration. One promising application, illustrated in the companion paper, is to obtain high-spatial resolution down-hole geochemical profiles using pXRF on unprepared exploration drill-cores. However, the precision and accuracy of pXRF analysers on such samples is not well studied. We have tested three Olympus Innov-X analysers, both on a sediment standard (NIST 2702, ‘Inorganics in Marine Sediment’) and in-situ on unmineralized rock cores from volcanic and intrusive, mafic to felsic lithologies. We conclude that pXRF is quite precise for a number of elements, but not very accurate using factory calibrations. For example, the 1σ precision of one Delta Premium analyser tested on a basaltic core, in mining plus mode, with a 60 s integration time, is better than 5 % for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mn, S, Si, Ti, Zn and Zr. The same analyser, tested on a range of volcanic and intrusive core samples, yielded the following average systematic errors: Al -23 %, Ca -4 %, Fe +1 %, K -9 %, Mg -17 %, Mn -15 %, P +218 %, Si +4 %, Ti -23 %, Cu +220 %, Zn +151 %, and Zr +17 %. These systematic errors can largely be removed by the application of correction factors, which are unique to each analyser and each project. Without such corrections, the three analysers tested, including two ‘identical’ Delta Premium models, yield different results on the same sample. Another important finding is that within 20 cm long core samples, the effect of mineralogical heterogeneity on in-situ pXRF data is much larger than that of the instrument precision. Finally, with the Delta analysers, both the ‘mining plus’ and the ‘soil’ modes are needed to determine as many elements as possible with the best data quality possible.

A new geoscientific application of portable XRF (pXRF) analysers is the acquisition of high-spatial resolution down-hole geochemical profiles obtained in-situ on exploration drill-cores. One advantage of such profiles over traditional laboratory geochemistry, apart from the non-destructive aspect of pXRF, is that they are obtained quickly, in the field. So they can help exploration companies take important decisions such as “has a target stratigraphic horizon been reached, or should we drill deeper?” For example, in the Matagami mining camp, pXRF data permits the rapid distinction of two visually similar and variably altered rhyolites in the Perseverance area, based on a plot of Ti/Zr vs Al/Zr. The corrected pXRF data plot within the same fields as the traditional geochemical analyses for these rhyolites. Another advantage of pXRF profiles for exploration companies, geological surveys or academic researchers is the ability to locate lithological contacts better, and in general improve down-hole lithological discrimination, especially for fine-grained and/or hydrothermally altered lithologies. For example, in the Caber volcanogenic massive sulphide deposit area, there are abundant intrusions which makes it difficult to follow the volcanic stratigraphy between drill-holes and sections. In the drill-hole studied, the pXRF data, plotted as down-hole profiles of elements/oxides and ratios, allow several previously unidentified altered dykes to be distinguished from altered rhyolites.

The Matagami mining camp in the northern Abitibi greenstone belt of Canada contains 19 known Archean volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits, 11 of which have collectively produced 46.5 Mt of zinc-rich ore to date. The VMS deposits occur in three NW-SE– to WNW-ESE–oriented trends called the north flank, the south flank, and the west camp, which are composed of a felsic to mafic volcanic sequence cut by mafic to intermediate, synvolcanic sills and dikes. In order to clarify stratigraphic relationships between the south flank and the west camp, and to constrain the temporal evolution of volcanic activity, six new high-precision U-Pb zircon ages have been obtained. These data show that the total duration of felsic volcanism in the south flank was no more than 2.5 m.y., with the rhyolites extruded in the following order: Watson Rhyolite (2725.9 ± 0.8 Ma), Bracemac Rhyolite (2725.8 ± 0.7 Ma), Dumagami Rhyolite at the Perseverance Mine (2725.4 ± 0.7 Ma), and Dumagami Rhyolite in the Orchan West VMS deposit area (2724.9 ± 0.7 Ma). A hiatus in effusive volcanism is represented by the Key Tuffite, an important marker horizon in the camp. The hiatus probably lasted on the order of 0.5 m.y. Significantly, the rhyolite from the footwall of the Caber VMS deposit in the west camp has an age of 2725.9 ± 1.2 Ma, identical to that of the Watson Rhyolite on the south flank.

The 2704 to 2695 Ma Blake River Group in the southern Abitibi greenstone belt comprises a well preserved submarine volcanic sequence that hosts a large number of VMS and important Au-rich VMS deposits, including the world-class Horne and LaRonde-Penna deposits. Establishing precise chronostratigraphic control on the VMS deposits within the Blake River Group is critical because numerous distinct events took place within a period of 9 m.y. Nineteen new high-precision U-Pb ages temporally constrain the host rocks of many polymetallic VMS deposits and associated synvolcanic intrusions, demonstrating that these VMS deposits formed throughout the protracted volcanic evolution of the entire group. Ages on host rocks of the Horne (2702.2 ± 0.9 Ma), Quemont (2702.0 ± 0.8 Ma), and Fabie (2701.9 ± 0.9 Ma) deposits reveal that they are among the oldest VMS deposits in the Blake River Group. The giant Horne Au-rich VMS deposit had already formed when the Cu-Zn deposits of the Noranda mine sequence, including Millenbach and Amulet, were generated at ~2698 Ma and is thus unrelated, consistent with its different volcanological setting and metal content. Large Au-rich VMS deposits of the Bousquet Formation, including LaRonde Penna and Bousquet 2-Dumagami, were formed at 2698 to 2697 Ma and are distinctly younger than the Horne and Quemont deposits. There were, therefore, two major time-stratigraphic intervals within the Blake River Group that were favorable for the formation of Au-rich VMS deposits. Rhyolite hosting the large Bouchard-Hebert VMS deposits yielded an age of 2695.8 ± 0.8 Ma. Important mineralizing events in the Blake River Group occur at ca. 2-m.y. intervals apart and are associated with major magmatic episodes. Recognition of specific time-stratigraphic intervals for different styles of mineralization and geologic settings is essential to improve exploration models within the Blake River Group and for similar volcanic assemblages elsewhere in the Archean.

An innovative approach to enhance volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) exploration in regions outside of mining camps is to first use physical volcanology with litho- and chemostratigraphy to establish the location of effusive centers in the volcanic units and use pyrite geochemistry in sulfide-bearing stratified intervals with whole-rock geochemistry in the underlying volcanic units to identify hydrothermal upflow zones. This methodology is illustrated by this study in the Archean Blake River Group within the Abitibi greenstone belt of Quebec and Ontario. The Blake River Group contains numerous VMS deposits, yet large segments remain underexplored, including the Hebecourt Formation which contains four tholeiitic units that range from basalt to rhyolite in composition. Effusive centers are located for three felsic units and subunits: (1) low Ti (porphyritic) subunit of the main rhyolite, (2) high Ti (aphyric) subunit of the main rhyolite, and (3) the upper rhyolite, and for a basaltic andesite unit. Stringer and disseminated Zn-Cu mineralization occurs within the flank breccia of the low Ti rhyolite dome. An inferred vent area for an overlying basaltic andesitic unit has also been identified in this area, illustrating the coincidence of hydrothermal upflow zones with volcanic vents. LA-ICP-MS analysis of pyrite grains from several sulfide-bearing stratified intervals indicates two broad areas of higher Cu, Zn, Au, and Ag contents. The eastern region corresponds to known volcanic vents and mineralization. The western region also indicates upflow of Cu-bearing hydrothermal fluids and corresponds to a possible effusive center for the high Ti subunit. The western region does not contain known mineralization at lower stratigraphic positions, but it has not been thoroughly explored.

Diamond drilling typically constitutes a major part of costs in advanced mineral exploration programs. This generates thousands of meters of rock cores during major exploration campaigns, but the cores are not currently utilized to their full potential. They could supply three-dimensional information on physical properties, geochemistry and mineralogy; such data could be used to model the geology or physical properties in 3D, characterize hydrothermal alteration, or provide chemo-stratigraphic constraints, for example. But measuring all the parameters one by one at high spatial resolution by traditional methods would be impractical due to cost or time considerations and, for some parameters, it would destroy the core (e.g. geochemistry). In this paper we describe a multi-sensor core logger and its use on rock cores from exploration diamond drill holes. This semi-automated system can measure near-simultaneously, non-destructively and at high spatial resolution, the following parameters: (1) volumetric magnetic susceptibility; (2) density using gamma-ray attenuation; (3) several chemical elements through energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry; and (4) visible/near infrared spectrometry, which allows numerous minerals to be detected and characterized. The logger also acquires a continuous image of the core using a line-scan camera, which allows the user to compare other properties with the visual aspect of the core and creates a complete virtual archive. The aim of this mostly methodological paper is to describe the logger as a whole and then each instrument or sensor separately, outlining the numerous tests that have been performed to assess and improve data quality. We also present preliminary results from the Matagami mining camp of Canada, a base metal district.

Felsic maar-diatreme volcanoes host major ore deposits but have been largely ignored in the volcanology literature, especially for the diatreme portion of the system. Here, we use two Mexican tuff rings as analogs for the maar ejecta ring, new observations from one diatreme, and the economic geology literature on four other mineralized felsic maar-diatremes to produce an integrated picture of this type of volcano. The ejecta rings are up to 50 m+ thick and extend laterally up to ∼1.5 km from the crater edge. In two Mexican examples, the lower part of the ejecta ring is dominated by pyroclastic surge deposits with abundant lithic clasts (up to 80% at Hoya de Estrada). These deposits display low-angle cross-bedding, dune bedforms, undulating beds, channels, bomb sags, and accretionary lapilli and are interpreted as phreatomagmatic. Rhyolitic juvenile clasts at Tepexitl have only 0–25% vesicles in this portion of the ring. The upper parts of the ejecta ring sequences in the Mexican examples have a different character: lithic clasts can be less abundant, the grain size is typically coarser, and the juvenile clasts can be different in character (with some more vesicular fragments). Fragmentation was probably shallower at this stage. The post-eruptive maar crater infill is known at Wau and consists of reworked pyroclastic deposits as well as lacustrine and other sediments. Underneath are bedded upper diatreme deposits, interpreted as pyroclastic surge and fall deposits. The upper diatreme and post-eruptive crater deposits have dips larger than 30° at Wau, with approximately centroclinal attitudes. At still lower structural levels, the diatreme pyroclastic infill is largely unbedded; Montana Tunnels and Kelian are good examples of this. At Cerro de Pasco, the pyroclastic infill seems bedded despite about 500 m of post-eruptive erosion relative to the pre-eruptive surface. The contact between the country rocks and the diatreme is sometimes characterized by country rock breccias (Kelian, Mt. Rawdon). Pyroclastic rocks in the diatreme are typically poorly sorted, and ash-rich. They contain a heterolithic mix of juvenile clasts and lithic clasts from various stratigraphic levels. Megablocks derived from the ejecta ring or the country rocks are often found in the diatremes. Evidence for multiple explosions is in the form of steep crosscutting pyroclastic bodies within some diatremes and fragments of pyroclastic rocks within other pyroclastic facies. Pyroclastic rocks are cut by coherent felsic dikes and plugs which may have been feeders to lava domes at the surface. Allowing for the difference in magma composition, felsic maar-diatreme volcanoes have many similarities with their ultramafic to mafic equivalents. Differences include a common association with felsic domes, inside the crater or just outside (Wau), although the domes within the crater may be destroyed during the eruption (Hoya de Estrada, Tepexitl); the dikes and plugs feeding and invading felsic diatremes seem larger; the processes of phreatomagmatic explosions involving felsic magmas may be different.

Most volcanic eruptions occur in craters formed by previous activity. The presence of a crater implies specific confinement geometries, variably filled by loose fragmental deposits, which are expected to exert a strong, yet poorly studied, control on the violent gas expansion that drives the eruption. Here we analyze patterns of ejection from buried explosions in analog experiments, in order to investigate how the presence of a crater and changes in explosion depth and intensity may affect the formation of eruptive ejecta jets. Results show that scaled depth (charge burial depth divided by the cubic root of charge energy) controls the velocity and, partly, spread angle of eruptive jets independently of the presence of a pre-existing crater. Conversely, for a fixed scaled depth, the presence of a pre-existing crater limits the development of a laterally expanding annulus of the jet. These results are directly applicable to interpretation of volcanic explosions. While the relationship between the host-substrate properties and the formation of maar-diatreme volcanoes have been investigated in the past, it remains poorly understood. In order to establish the effects of the qualitative host-substrate properties on crater depth, diameter, morphological features, and sub-surface structures, we present a comparison of four campaigns of experiments that used small chemical explosives buried in various geological media to simulate the formation of maar-diatremes. Previous results from these experiments have shown that primary variations in craters and sub-surface structures are related to the scaled depth (physical depth divided by cube root of blast energy). Our study reveals that single explosions at optimal scaled depths in stronger host materials create the largest and deepest craters with steep walls and the highest crater rims. For single explosions at deeper than optimal scaled depths, the influence of material strength is less obvious and non-linear for crater depth, and non-existent for crater diameter, within the range of the experiments. For secondary and tertiary blasts, there are no apparent relationships between the material properties and the crater parameters. Instead, the presence of pre-existing craters influences the crater evolution. A general weakening of the materials after successive explosions can be observed, suggesting a possible decrease in the host-substrate influence even at optimal scaled depth. The results suggest that the influence of the host-substrate properties is important only in the early stage of a maar-diatreme (neglecting post-eruptive slumping into the open crater) and decreases as explosion numbers increase. Since maar-diatremes reflect eruptive histories that involve tens to hundreds of individual explosions, the influence of initial substrate properties on initial crater processes could potentially be completely lost in a natural system.

Vesicles within juvenile fragments in mafic pyroclastic deposits contain important information about the state of the magma at the time of fragmentation. There have been few vesicle studies of juvenile pyroclasts from mafic phreatomagmatic deposits, however, and none we can find from maar–diatreme volcanoes. In this paper we document the vesicularity and vesicle-population characteristics of juvenile fragments sampled from non-bedded lithified deposits of the Coombs Hills diatreme complex, part of the Ferrar large igneous province, Antarctica. The diatreme-filling pyroclastic deposits, dominated by lapilli tuffs and tuff breccias, contain typically abundant lithic clasts derived mostly from the enclosing sedimentary sequence, and several types of juvenile clasts ranging from blocky to fluidal or “raggy”. In the samples measured, 77–80% of the juvenile pyroclasts ranging in size from 0.5 mm to fine lapilli is in the ‘non-vesicular’ to ‘incipiently vesicular’ range ( Fluidal- or rag-shaped juvenile clasts, some circular vesicles, and the lack of microlites all suggest that the Coombs Hills magma had a relatively low viscosity prior to fragmentation, despite the basaltic andesite composition. This low viscosity allowed parts of the magma to be fragmented in a non-brittle fashion during phreatomagmatic explosions and to form fluidal clasts. Phreatomagmatic explosions in diatremes can therefore produce diverse types of juvenile clasts simultaneously, and the proportions of each will depend on the explosivity of the magma–water (slurry) interaction and other factors. Recycling of fragments is also thought to be an important factor in generating mixtures of different types of juvenile fragments in diatremes.

The Archean Blake River Group (BRG) of Ontario and Quebec is dominated by submarine mafic to intermediate lavas, with more restricted felsic volcanic rocks. Given the good quality of outcrop, and high level of preservation of some BRG rocks, the mafic to intermediate lavas were used in the 1970s and 1980s to better understand the evolution of massive and pillowed submarine flows, and their associated fragmental facies (pillow breccias, hyaloclastite). Potentially, the BRG could also represent a useful volcanic succession for the study of explosive submarine eruption products in the ancient record. Before this is possible, however, a regional inventory of the mafic to intermediate volcaniclastic units is needed in order to clarify their characteristics and origins. In this paper, we compare and contrast volcaniclastic rocks from three areas within the same formation of the northern BRG in Quebec: the Monsabrais area, the lac Duparquet area, and the D’Alembert tuff area. Close examination reveals pronounced differences in terms of lateral continuity, thickness, grading, bedding, clast shapes, textures, etc. in the volcaniclastic rocks. These differences are interpreted to reflect vastly different emplacement processes ranging from hyaloclastite generation as a result of self-fragmentation and lava contact with water (dominant in the Monsabrais and lac Duparquet areas) to aqueous density currents likely fed directly by explosive submarine eruptions (dominant in the D’Alembert tuff).

Maar-diatreme volcanoes are produced by explosive eruptions that cut deeply into the country rock. A maar is the crater cut into the ground and surrounded by an ejecta ring, while the diatreme structure continues downward and encloses diatreme and root zone deposits. Here we attempt an evenhanded review of maar-diatreme volcanology that extends from mafic to kimberlitic varieties, and from historical maar eruptions to deeply eroded or mined diatreme structures. We conclude that maar-diatreme eruptions are episodic. Ejecta rings provide invaluable insight into eruption processes and sequence, but are incomplete records of diatreme formation. Deposits within the diatreme structure include, in varying proportions, lower unbedded deposits sometimes typified by subvertical contacts among domains of debris emplaced sequentially, and upper bedded deposits formed by sedimentation on surfaces open to the atmosphere. A basal root zone comprises the transition from coherent magmatic feeder dike to clastic deposits formed by fragmentation of magma and enclosing country rock; root zones are irregular in form, and the clastic deposits are typically intruded by contorted dikes. Irregular root zone-like chaotic breccias cut by contorted dikes are also present within diatreme deposits, where they represent intra-diatreme fragmentation zones and record changes in the location of the explosion locus during eruption.

In the Archean Blake River Group, mafic to intermediate fragmental units have controversially been proposed to have formed during the collapse of a giant submarine caldera. This paper describes and interprets these rocks, summarizing their physical characteristics, inferred origins, age relationships, and geochemical signatures. The widespread Stadacona member, south of Rouyn-Noranda, consists of several hundred metres of bedded volcaniclastic rocks interpreted to have been mostly deposited from aqueous density currents fed directly by explosive eruptions. The magmas involved in these eruptions were plagioclase-phyric, tholeiitic to transitional basalts. The similarly widespread D’Alembert tuff, in the northern part of the Blake River Group, shares many physical characteristics with the Stadacona member and is thought to have a similar origin. However, the D’Alembert tuff is approximately six million years younger than the Stadacona member. It is composed mostly of transitional to calc-alkaline andesites and basaltic andesites with very distinct trace element profiles. Volcaniclastic rocks from other areas, such as Tannahill Township in Ontario and the Monsabrais area in Quebec, are interpreted to represent mostly in situ to remobilized hyaloclastite, with no explosive eruptions involved in their genesis. Our observations and interpretations are not compatible with models in which the volcaniclastic units are emplaced during a catastrophic event in relation with the collapse of a giant caldera. Instead, the fragmental rocks were produced by various mechanisms at many distinct times during the evolution of the Blake River Group.

The morphologic parameters, pyroclastic deposits and evolution of maar–diatreme volcanoes are affected by the type of environment in which they are emplaced. End-member cases are a hard substrate (rocks) and a soft substrate (unconsolidated volcaniclastic or sedimentary deposits). In this paper, we present an example of a volcanic complex emplaced in a mixed hard–soft setting from the Pali Aike volcanic field (PAVF) near the Argentina–Chile border. The Plio-Pleistocene PAVF is an alkaline, mafic, back-arc monogenetic field which contains over 100 phreatomagmatic volcanoes. The studied volcanic complex contains two large coalescent maars overlain by scoria and spatter. The 1.4 × 1.3 km East Maar has better exposures than the shallower, 1.9 km-wide West Maar and seems to have been less modified by post-eruptive processes. The tephra rim of the East Maar was studied in detail and we infer it was produced mostly by base surges from phreatomagmatic eruption columns, with rare instances of intercalated scoria fall layers. Based on regional information, the general pre-maar stratigraphy is dominated by sedimentary and volcaniclastic rocks of the Magallanes Basin, including a thick poorly consolidated upper unit dating from the Miocene. These are overlain by Plio-Pleistocene fluvio-glacial deposits and PAVF lavas, some of which are exposed in the East Maar just below the phreatomagmatic deposits. All of these units are represented as lithic clasts in the tephra rim of the East Maar, the most abundant being the clasts from the earlier basaltic lavas and rock fragments derived from the glacial deposits. There is no specific evidence for a deep diatreme under the East Maar, and in this particular case, the mixed environment seems to have produced a maar–diatreme volcano typical of a soft substrate.

When dealing with ancient subalkaline volcanic rocks, the alkali – total iron – magnesium (AFM) diagram is of limited use in assigning a tholeiitic versus calc-alkaline affinity because these elements are often mobile during alteration and metamorphism. Classification diagrams using immobile trace elements are preferable but need to be tested and optimized on unaltered rocks. To this end, a geochemical database containing over a thousand, presumed unaltered, subalkaline volcanic samples from young oceanic arcs was assembled. The data were classified using both major and trace-element approaches, and the results were compared. If the calc-alkaline and tholeiitic fields on the AFM diagram are used to define magmatic affinity, then the commonly used Zr versus Y, La versus Yb, and Th versus Yb discriminant diagrams misclassify 39%, 24%, and 28% of samples, respectively. After optimization (using a number of criteria), all three trace-element classification diagrams produce results that are generally consistent with the AFM diagram. The optimized diagrams only misclassify 7%, 11%, and 12% of the samples, respectively. A new Th/Yb versus Zr/Y diagram has a better overall performance than any single ratio diagram and may prove helpful in assigning magmatic affinities to volcanic rocks in ancient successions.

Transport of kimberlite magma from the mantle to the surface is a complex process that involves many, often sudden and dramatic, changes in transport style. The pace and magnitude of changes in the transport system acclerate as the magma nears the surface, culminating in eruptions during which multiple transport events take place simultaneously as well as single transport events that change significantly from their point of origin to final deposition. Understanding the range of transport styles recorded by kimberlite deposits is key to describing the type and style of eruptions, the growth of cones and craters, and the distribution, geometry and structure of the deposits that make up kimberlite volcanoes. In an economic context, building a clear picture of the processes that shape deposits is essential for selecting exploration targets and evaluating the grade and value of diamond-bearing kimberlites. Variations in diamond grade reflect differences in the diamond content of different magma parcels erupted during the lifetime of the kimberlite volcano, sorting during transport of eruption products, or re-working of diamonds during crater growth, cone collapse and erosion. Deep transport systems control delivery of magma and diamonds to eruption sites The initial stages of kimberlite transport involve rise of magma in narrow, interconnected networks of fluidfilled fractures. There is compelling evidence that kimberlite magmas are extracted from their source region and erupted without significant residence times in the crust. Many single kimberlite volcanoes have significant variations in diamond grade between different kimberlite phases, suggesting eruption of distinct (perhaps unrelated) magma parcels at the same site.

Discrete explosive bursts are known from many volcanic eruptions. In maar–diatreme eruptions, they have occurred in debris-filled volcanic vents when magma interacted with groundwater, implying that material mobilized by such explosions passed through the overlying and enclosing debris to reach the surface. Although other studies have addressed the form and characteristics of craters formed by discrete explosions in unconsolidated material, no details are available regarding the structure of the disturbed debris between the explosion site and the surface. Field studies of diatreme deposits reveal cross-cutting, steep-sided zones of non-bedded volcaniclastic material that have been inferred to result from sedimentation of material transported by “debris jets” driven by explosions. In order to determine the general processes and deposit geometry resulting from discrete, explosive injections of entrained particles through a particulate host, we ran a series of analogue experiments. Specific volumes of compressed (0.5–2.5 MPa) air were released in bursts that drove gas-particle dispersions through a granular host. The air expanded into and entrained coloured particles in a small crucible before moving upward into the host (white particles). Each burst drove into the host an expanding cavity containing air and coloured particles. Total duration of each run, recorded with high-speed video, was approximately 0.5–1 s. The coloured beads sedimented into the transient cavity. This same behaviour was observed even in runs where there was no breaching of the surface, and no coloured beads ejected. A steep-sided body of coloured beads was left that is similar to the cross-cutting pipes observed in deposits filling real volcanic vents, in which cavity collapse can result not only from gas escape through a granular host as in the experiments, but also through condensation of water vapour. A key conclusion from these experiments is that the geometry of cross-cutting volcaniclastic deposits in volcanic vents is not directly informative of the geometry of the “intrusions” that formed them. An additional conclusion is that complex structures can form quickly from discrete events.

In diatremes and other volcanic vents, steep bodies of volcaniclastic material having differing properties (particle size distribution, proportion of lithic fragments, etc.) from those of the surrounding vent-filling volcaniclastic material are often found. It has been proposed that cylindrical or cone-shaped bodies result from the passage of “debris jets” generated after phreatomagmatic explosions or other discrete subterranean bursts. To learn more about such phenomena, we model experimentally the injection of gas-particulate dispersions through other particles. Analogue materials (glass beads or sand) and a finite amount of compressed air are used in the laboratory. The Jurassic Ferrar large igneous province of Antarctica comprises igneous intrusions, flood lavas, and mafic volcaniclastic deposits (now lithified). The latter rocks are particularly diverse and well-exposed in the Coombs-Allan Hills area of South Victoria Land, where they are assigned to the Mawson Formation. In this paper we use these rocks in conjunction with the pre-Ferrar sedimentary rocks (Beacon Supergroup) and the lavas themselves (Kirkpatrick Basalt) to reconstruct the geomorphological and geological evolution of the landscape. In the Early Jurassic, the surface of the region was an alluvial plain, with perhaps 1 km of mostly continental siliciclastic sediments underlying it. After the fall of silicic ash from an unknown but probably distal source, mafic magmatism of the Ferrar province began. The oldest record of this event at Allan Hills is a ≤ 180 m-thick debris avalanche deposit (member m₁ of the Mawson Formation) which contains globular domains of mafic igneous rock. These domains are inferred to represent dismembered Ferrar intrusions emplaced in the source area of the debris avalanche; shallow emplacement of Ferrar magmas caused a slope failure that mobilized the uppermost Beacon Supergroup, and the silicic ash deposits, into a pre-existing valley or basin. The period which followed (‘Mawson time’) was the main stage for explosive eruptions in the Ferrar province, and several cubic kilometres of both new magma and sedimentary rock were fragmented over many years. Phreatomagmatic explosions were the dominant fragmentation mechanism, with magma-water interaction taking place in both sedimentary aquifers and existing vents filled by volcaniclastic debris. At Coombs Hills, a vent complex or ‘phreatocauldron’ was formed by coalescence of diatreme-like structures; at Allan Hills, member m₂ of the Mawson Formation consists mostly of thick, coarse-grained, poorly sorted layers inferred to represent the lithified deposits of pyroclastic density currents. Meanwhile at Carapace Nunatak, mafic clasts were mixed with detrital material to form the Carapace Sandstone in alluvial and eventually lacustrine environments. Eruptions then became largely effusive, producing hundreds of metres of flood lavas that covered the landscape (‘Kirkpatrick time’). In places, lava flowed into ephemeral lakes to form pillow-palagonite breccias (base of sequence, Carapace Nunatak) or pillow lavas (top of sequence, Coombs Hills). Several generations of Ferrrar intrusions were emplaced during the course of these events; at least three can be distinguished based on field relations. New geochemical data indicates that for the Ferrar province, magma involved in the explosive eruptions had the same major element composition as that which produced shallow intrusions and lavas. We also note the possibility that flood lavas were fed by plugs cross-cutting the Mawson Formation at Coombs Hills, rather than by major dikes extending to the surface. Finally, we infer that eruption plumes were limited to the troposphere and that direct environmental impacts were thus likely restricted to the southern hemisphere.

The volume, grain size, and depositional facies of material deposited outside an explosion crater, ejecta, are sensitive to the depth of the explosion, the explosion energy, and the presence or absence of a crater before the explosion. We detonate buried chemical explosives as an analog for discrete volcanic explosions in experiments to identify unique characteristics of proximal, medial, and distal ejecta facies and their distribution from a range of scaled depths in undisturbed and cratered ground. Ejecta are here discussed in terms of three facies: (1) proximal ejecta, which form a constructional landform around a crater; (2) medial ejecta, which form a continuous sheet deposit that thins much more gradually with distance; and (3) distal ejecta that are deposited as isolated clasts. The extent of proximal ejecta away from the crater, relative to crater size, is not sensitive to scaled depth, but the volume proportion of proximal ejecta to the total ejecta deposit is sensitive to the presence of a crater and scaled depth. Medial ejecta distribution and volume contributions are both sensitive to the presence of a crater and to scaled depth. Distal ejecta distance is dependent on scaled depth and the presence of a crater, while the volume proportion of distal ejecta is less sensitive to scaled depth or presence of a crater. Experimental facies and deposit structures inferred from observations of jet dynamics are used to suggest facies associations anticipated from eruptions dominated by explosions of different scaled depth configurations. We emphasize that significant differences in tephra ring deposits can result from the effects of scaled depth and preexisting craters on ejecta dynamics, and are not necessarily related to fundamental differences in explosion mechanisms or degree of magma fragmentation.

International audience; We present results of experiments that use small chemical explosive charges buried in layered aggregates to simulate the effects of subsurface hydrothermal and phreatomagmatic explosions at varying depths and lateral locations, extending earlier experimental results that changed explosion locations only along a vertical axis. The focus is on the resulting crater size and shape and subcrater structures. Final crater shapes tend to be roughly circular if subsurface explosion epicenters occur within each other’s footprints (defined as the plan view area of reference crater produced by a single explosion of a given energy, as predicted by an empirical relationship). Craters are elongate if an epicenter lies somewhat beyond the footprint of the previous explosion, such that their footprints overlap, but if epicenters are too far apart, the footprints do not overlap and separate craters result. Explosions beneath crater walls formed by previous blasts tend to produce inclined (laterally directed) ejecta jets, while those beneath crater centers are vertically focused. Lateral shifting of explosion sites results in mixing of subcrater materials by development of multiple subvertical domains of otherwise pure materials, which progressively break down with repeated blasts, and by ejection and fallback of deeper-seated material that had experienced net upward displacement to very shallow levels by previous explosions. A variably developed collar of material that experienced net downward displacement surrounds the subvertical domains. The results demonstrate key processes related to mixing and ejection of materials from different depths during an eruptive episode at a maar-diatreme volcano as well as at other phreatomagmatic and hydrothermal explosion sites.

The Ferrar large igneous province of Antarctica contains significant mafic volcaniclastic deposits, some of which are interpreted to fill large vent complexes. Such a complex was re-examined at Coombs Hills to map individual steep-sided cross-cutting bodies in detail, and we found several contrasting types, two of which are interpreted to have filled subterranean passageways forcefully opened from below into existing, non-consolidated debris. These transient conduits were opened because of the propagation of debris jets – upward-moving streams of volcaniclastic debris, steam, magmatic gases +/− liquid water droplets – following explosive magma–aquifer interaction. Some debris jets probably remained wholly subterranean, whereas others made it to the surface, but the studied outcrops do not allow us to differentiate between these cases. The pipes filled with country rock-rich lapilli-tuff or tuff-breccia are interpreted to have formed following phreatomagmatic explosions occurring near the walls or floor of the vent complex, causing fragmentation of both magma and abundant country rock material. In contrast, some of the cross-cutting zones filled with basalt-rich tuff-breccia or lapilli-tuff could have been generated following explosions taking place within pre-existing basalt-bearing debris, well away from the complex walls or floor. We infer that once focused jets were formed, they did not incorporate significant amounts of existing debris while travelling through them; instead, incorporation of fragments from the granular host took place near explosion sites. Other basalt-rich tuff-breccia zones, accompanied by domains of in situ peperite and coherent basalt pods, are inferred to have originated by less violent processes.
