Search

NGC 5291, an early-type galaxy surrounded by a giant HI ring, is believed to be formed from collision with another galaxy. Several star forming complexes and tidal dwarf galaxies are distributed along the collisional ring which are sites of star formation in environments where extreme dynamical effects are involved. Dynamical effects can affect the star formation properties and the spatial distribution of star forming complexes along the tidal features. To study and quantify the star formation activity in the main body and in the ring structure of the NGC 5291 system, we use high spatial resolution FUV and NUV imaging observations from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope onboard AstroSat. A total of 57 star-forming knots are identified to be part of this interacting system out of which 12 are new detections (star forming complexes that lie inside the HI contour) compared to the previous measurements from lower resolution UV imaging. We estimate the attenuation in UV for each of the resolved star-forming knots using the UV spectral slope $\beta$, derived from the FUV-NUV colour. Using the extinction corrected UV fluxes, we derive the star formation rate of the resolved star forming complexes. The extinction corrected total star formation rate of this system is estimated as 1.75 $\pm$ 0.04 $M_{\odot}/yr$. The comparison with dwarf galaxy populations (BCD, Sm and dIm galaxies) in the nearby Universe shows that many of the knots in the NGC 5291 system have SFR values comparable to the SFR of BCD galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Spectral data cubes of the interacting pair of galaxies NGC 2535 and NGC 2536 (the Arp 82 system) targeting bright emission lines in the visible band, obtained with the imaging Fourier transform spectrometer (iFTS) SITELLE attached to the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), are presented. Analysis of Hα velocity maps reveals a bar in NGC2536⁠. In NGC2535⁠, we find strong non-circular motions outside the ocular ring, in the elliptical arc and tidal tails of NGC2535⁠, and a misalignment between the kinematic and photometric position angles. We detect 155 H II region complexes in the interacting pair of galaxies and determine oxygen abundances for 66 of them using different calibrators. We find, regardless of the indicator used, that the oxygen abundance distribution in NGC2536 is shallow, whereas in NGC2535⁠, it is best fitted by two slopes, the break occurring beyond the ocular ring. The inner slope is comparable to the one observed in isolated normal star-forming galaxies, but the outer slope is shallow. We present a numerical simulation of the interaction that reproduces the observed tidal features, kinematics, and metallicity distribution, to investigate the effect of the interaction on the galaxies. The model indicates that the galaxies have undergone a close encounter, strongly prograde for the primary, and are halfway in their course to a second close encounter. © 2022 The Author(s). Shell galaxies make a class of tidally distorted galaxies, characterised by wide concentric arc(s), extending out to large galactocentric distances with sharp outer edges. Recent observations of young massive star clusters in the prominent outer shell of NGC 474 suggest that such systems host extreme conditions of star formation. In this paper, we present a hydrodynamic simulation of a galaxy merger and its transformation into a shell galaxy. We analyse how the star formation activity evolves with time, location-wise within the system, and what are the physical conditions for star formation. During the interaction, an excess of dense gas appears, triggering a starburst, i.e. an enhanced star formation rate and a reduced depletion time. Star formation coincides with regions of high molecular gas fraction, such as the galactic nucleus, spiral arms, and occasionally the tidal debris during the early stages of the merger. Tidal interactions scatter stars into a stellar spheroid, while the gas cools down and reforms a disc. The morphological transformation after coalescence stabilises the gas and thus quenches star formation, without the need for feedback from an active galactic nucleus. This evolution shows similarities with a compaction scenario for compact quenched spheroids at high-redshift, yet without a long red nugget phase. Shells appear after coalescence, during the quenched phase, implying that they do not host the conditions necessary for in situ star formation. We present a study of the stellar populations of globular clusters (GCs) in the Virgo Cluster core with a homogeneous spectroscopic catalog of 692 GCs within a major axis distance $R_{\rm maj} = $ 840 kpc from M87. We investigate radial and azimuthal variations in the mean age, total metallicity, [Fe/H], and $\alpha$-element abundance, of blue (metal-poor) and red (metal-rich) GCs using their co-added spectra. We find that the blue GCs have a steep radial gradient in [Z/H] within $R_{\rm maj} =$ 165 kpc, with roughly equal contributions from [Fe/H] and [$\alpha$/Fe], and flat gradients beyond. By contrast, the red GCs show a much shallower gradient in [Z/H], which is entirely driven by [Fe/H]. We use GC-tagged Illustris simulations to demonstrate an accretion scenario where more massive satellites (with more metal- and $\alpha$-rich GCs) sink further into the central galaxy than less massive ones, and where the gradient flattening occurs because of the low GC occupation fraction of low-mass dwarfs disrupted at larger distances. The dense environment around M87 may also cause the steep [$\alpha$/Fe] gradient of the blue GCs, mirroring what is seen in the dwarf galaxy population. The progenitors of red GCs have a narrower mass range than those of blue GCs, which makes their gradients shallower. We also explore spatial inhomogeneity in GC abundances, finding that the red GCs to the northwest of M87 are slightly more metal-rich. The characterization of Low Surface Brightness (LSB) stellar structures around galaxies such as tidal debris of on-going or past collisions is essential to constrain models of galactic evolution. Our goal is to obtain quantitative measurements of LSB structures identified in deep images of samples consisting of hundreds of galaxies. We developed an online annotation tool that enables contributors to delineate the shapes of diffuse extended stellar structures, as well as artefacts or foreground structures. All parameters are automatically stored in a database which may be queried to retrieve quantitative measurements. We annotated LSB structures around 352 nearby massive galaxies with deep images obtained with the CFHT as part of two large programs: MATLAS and UNIONS/CFIS. Each LSB structure was delineated and labeled according to its likely nature: stellar shells, streams associated to a disrupted satellite, tails formed in major mergers, ghost reflections or cirrus. From our database containing 8441 annotations, the area, size, median surface brightness and distance to the host of 228 structures were computed. The results confirm the fact that tidal structures defined as streams are thinner than tails, as expected by numerical simulations. In addition, tidal tails appear to exhibit a higher surface brightness than streams (by about 1 mag), which may be related to different survival times for the two types of collisional debris. We did not detect any tidal feature fainter than 27.5 mag.arcsec$^{-2}$, while the nominal surface brightness limits of our surveys range between 28.3 and 29 mag.arcsec$^{-2}$, a difference that needs to be taken into account when estimating the sensitivity of future surveys to identify LSB structures. The morphology of galaxies gives essential constraints on the models of galaxy evolution. The morphology of the features in the low-surface-brightness regions of galaxies has not been fully explored yet because of observational difficulties. Here we present the results of our visual inspections of very deep images of a large volume-limited sample of 177 nearby massive early-type galaxies (ETGs) from the MATLAS survey. The images reach a surface-brightness limit of $28.5-29$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in the $g'$ band. Using a dedicated navigation tool and questionnaire, we looked for structures at the outskirts of the galaxies such as tidal shells, streams, tails, disturbed outer isophotes or peripheral star-forming disks, and simultaneously noted the presence of contaminating sources, such as Galactic cirrus. We also inspected internal sub-structures such as bars and dust lanes. We discuss the reliability of this visual classification investigating the variety of answers made by the participants. We present the incidence of these structures and the trends of the incidence with the mass of the host galaxy and the density of its environment. We find an incidence of shells, stream and tails of approximately 15%, about the same for each category. For galaxies with masses over $10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, the incidence of shells and streams increases about 1.7 times. We also note a strong unexpected anticorrelation of the incidence of Galactic cirrus with the environment density of the target galaxy. The Euclid mission will observe well over a billion galaxies out to $z\sim6$ and beyond. This will offer an unrivalled opportunity to investigate several key questions for understanding galaxy formation and evolution. The first step for many of these studies will be the selection of a sample of quiescent and star-forming galaxies, as is often done in the literature by using well known colour techniques such as the `UVJ' diagram. However, given the limited number of filters available for the Euclid telescope, the recovery of such rest-frame colours will be challenging. We therefore investigate the use of observed Euclid colours, on their own and together with ground-based u-band observations, for selecting quiescent and star-forming galaxies. The most efficient colour combination, among the ones tested in this work, consists of the (u-VIS) and (VIS-J) colours. We find that this combination allows users to select a sample of quiescent galaxies complete to above $\sim70\%$ and with less than 15$\%$ contamination at redshifts in the range $0.7565\%$ completeness level and contamination below 20$\%$ at $1, Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a search for disturbed, candidate ram pressure stripping galaxies across more than 50 spectroscopically selected SDSS groups and clusters. Forty-eight ram pressure candidates are visually identified in these systems using high quality UNIONS imaging from the Canada-France Hawaii Telescope, covering ~6200 and ~2800 square degrees in the u- and r-bands respectively. Ram pressure candidates are found in groups and clusters spanning a wide range in halo mass and include ~30 ram pressure candidates in the group regime ($M_h < 10^{14}$). The observed frequency of ram pressure candidates shows substantial scatter with group/cluster mass, but on average is larger in clusters ($M_h > 10^{14}\,M_\odot$) than groups ($M_h < 10^{14}\,M_\odot$) by a factor of ~2. We find that ram pressure candidates are most commonly low-mass galaxies and have enhanced star formation rates relative to star-forming field galaxies. The enhancement in star formation is largely independent of galaxy mass and strongest for galaxies in clusters. As a result of the large survey footprint and excellent image quality from UNIONS, we are able to identify disturbed galaxies, potentially affected by ram pressure stripping, across a wide range of host environment., 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 appendix, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are very low-surface brightness galaxies with large effective radii. Spectroscopic measurements of a few UDGs have revealed a low dark matter content, based on the internal motion of stars or globular clusters (GCs). This is in contrast to the large number of GCs found for these systems, from which it would be expected to correspond to a large dark matter halo mass. Here we present HST+ACS observations for the UDG MATLAS-2019 in the NGC5846 group. Using the F606W and F814W filters, we trace the GC population two magnitudes below the peak of the GC luminosity function (GCLF). Employing Bayesian considerations, we identify 26+-6 GCs associated with the dwarf, yielding a large specific frequency of S_N=58+-14. We use the turnover of the GCLF to derive a distance of 21+-2 Mpc, which is consistent with the NGC5846 group of galaxies. Due to the superior image quality of the HST, we are able to resolve the GCs and measure their sizes, which are consistent with the sizes of GCs around Local Group galaxies. Using the linear relation between the total mass of galaxies and of GCs, we derive a halo mass of 0.9(+-0.2) *10^11 M_solar (M_solar/L_solar>1000). The high abundance of GCs, together with the small uncertainties, make MATLAS-2019 one of the most extreme UDGs, which likely sets an upper limit of the number of GCs for UDGs., 16 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in APJ

The presence of HI gas in galaxies is inextricably linked to their morphology and evolution. This paper aims to understand the HI content of the already identified 2210 dwarfs located in the low-to-moderate density environments of the MATLAS deep imaging survey. We combine the HI observations from the ATLAS$^{3D}$ survey, with the extragalactic HI sources from the ALFALFA survey, to extract the HI line width, velocity and mass of the MATLAS dwarfs. From the 1773 dwarfs in our sample with available HI observations, 8% (145) have an HI line detection. The majority of the dwarfs show irregular morphology, while 29% (42) are ellipticals, the largest sample of HI-bearing dwarf ellipticals (dEs) to date. Of the HI dwarf sample, 2% (3) are ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), 12% have a transition-type morphology, 5% are tidal dwarf candidates, and 10% appear to be disrupted objects. In our optically selected sample, 9.5% of the dEs, 7% of the UDGs and 10% of the classical dwarfs are HI-bearing. The HI-bearing dwarfs have on average bluer colors than the dwarfs without detected HI. We find relations between the stellar and HI masses, gas fraction, color and absolute magnitude consistent with previous studies of dwarfs probing similar masses and environments. For 79% of the dwarfs identified as satellites of massive early-type galaxies, we find that the HI mass increases with the projected distance to the host. Using the HI line width, we estimate dynamical masses and find that 5% (7) of the dwarfs are dark matter deficient., 21 pages, 14 figures, 1 table. Accepted for publication in A&A

It was first observed in the 1970s that the dwarf galaxies surrounding our Milky Way, so-called satellites, appear to be arranged in a thin, vast plane. Similar discoveries have been made around additional galaxies in the local Universe such as Andromeda, Centaurus A, and potentially M83. In the specific cases with available kinematic data, the dwarf satellites also appear to preferentially co-orbit their massive host galaxy. Planes of satellites are rare in the lambda cold dark matter ($\Lambda$CDM) paradigm, although they may be a natural consequence of projection effects. Such a phase-space correlation, however, remains difficult to explain. In this work we analyzed the 2D spatial distribution of 2210 dwarf galaxies around early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the low-to-medium density fields of the "Mass Assembly of early-Type GaLAxies with their fine Structures" (MATLAS) survey. Under the assumption that the dwarfs are satellite members of the central massive ETG, we identified flattened structures using both a variation in the Hough transform and total least square (TLS) fitting. In 119 satellite systems, we find 31 statistically significant flattened dwarf structures using a combination of both methods with subsequent Monte Carlo (MC) simulations with random data. The vast majority of these dwarf structures lie within the estimated virial radii of the massive host. The major axes of these systems are aligned better than 30{\deg} with the estimated orientation of the large-scale structure in nine (50%) cases. We present a photometric study of the dwarf galaxy population in the low to moderate density environments of the MATLAS (Mass Assembly of early-Type gaLAxies with their fine Structures) deep imaging survey. The sample consists of 2210 dwarfs, including 508 nucleated. We define a nucleus as a compact source that is close to the galaxy photocentre (within 0.5 $R_e$) which is also the brightest such source within the galaxy's effective radius. The morphological analysis is performed using a 2D surface brightness profile modelling on the g-band images of both the galaxies and nuclei. Our study reveals that, for similar luminosities, the MATLAS dwarfs show ranges in the distribution of structural properties comparable to cluster (Virgo and Fornax) dwarfs and a range of sizes comparable to the Local Group and Local Volume dwarfs. Colour measurements using the r- and i-band images indicate that the dwarfs in low and moderate density environments are as red as cluster dwarfs on average. The observed similarities between dwarf ellipticals in vastly different environments imply that dEs are not uniquely the product of morphological transformation due to ram-pressure stripping and galaxy harassment in high density environments. We measure that the dwarf nuclei are located predominantly in massive, bright and round dwarfs and observe fewer nuclei in dwarfs with a faint centre and a small size. The colour of the galaxy nucleus shows no clear relation to the colour of the dwarf, in agreement with the migration and wet migration nucleus formation scenarios. The simultaneous advancement of high resolution integral field unit spectroscopy and robust full-spectral fitting codes now make it possible to examine spatially-resolved kinematic, chemical composition, and star-formation history from nearby galaxies. We take new MUSE data from the Snapshot Optical Spectroscopic Imaging of Mergers and Pairs for Legacy Exploration (SOSIMPLE) survey to examine NGC 7135. With counter-rotation of gas, disrupted kinematics and asymmetric chemical distribution, NGC 7135 is consistent with an ongoing merger. Though well hidden by the current merger, we are able to distinguish stars originating from an older merger, occurring 6-10 Gyr ago. We further find a gradient in ex-situ material with galactocentric radius, with the accreted fraction rising from 0% in the galaxy centre, to ~7% within 0.6 effective radii., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS

There is growing evidence for physical influence between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. We present a case study of nearby galaxy NGC 7582, for which we find evidence that galactic substructure plays an important role in affecting the collimation of ionized outflows as well as contributing to the heavy active galactic nucleus (AGN) obscuration. This result contrasts with a simple, small-scale AGN torus model, according to which AGN wind collimation may take place inside the torus itself, at subparsec scale. Using 3D spectroscopy with the MUSE instrument, we probe the kinematics of the stellar and ionized gas components as well as the ionization state of the gas from a combination of emission line ratios. We report for the first time a kinematically distinct core (KDC) in NGC 7582, on a scale of ~600pc. This KDC coincides spatially with dust lanes and starbursting complexes previously observed. We interpret it as a circumnuclear ring of stars and dusty, gas-rich material. We obtain a clear view of the outflowing cones over kpc scales, and demonstrate that they are predominantly photoionized by the central engine. We detect the back cone (behind the galaxy), and confirm previous results of a large nuclear obscuration of both the stellar continuum and HII regions. While we tentatively associate the presence of the KDC to a large-scale bar and/or a minor galaxy merger, we stress the importance of gaining a better understanding of the role of galaxy substructure in controlling the fueling, feedback and obscuration of AGN., Comment: 31 pages, 16 figures (including two animations), accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. Stellar shells around galaxies could provide precious insights into their assembly history. However, their formation mechanism remains poorly empirically constrained, regarding in particular the type of galaxy collisions at their origin. We present MUSE at VLT data of the most prominent outer shell of NGC 474, to constrain its formation history. The stellar shell spectrum is clearly detected, with a signal-to-noise ratio of ∼65 pix−1. We used a full spectral fitting method to determine the line-of-sight velocity and the age and metallicity of the shell and associated point-like sources within the MUSE field of view. We detect six globular cluster (GC) candidates and eight planetary nebula (PN) candidates that are all kinematically associated with the stellar shell. We show that the shell has an intermediate metallicity, [M/H] = −0.83−0.12+0.12, and a possible α-enrichment, [α/Fe] ∼ 0.3. Assuming the material of the shell comes from a lower mass companion, and that the latter had no initial metallicity gradient, such a stellar metallicity would constrain the mass of the progenitor at around 7.4 × 108 M⊙, implying a merger mass ratio of about 1:100. However, our census of PNe and earlier photometry of the shell would suggest a much higher ratio, around 1:20. Given the uncertainties, this difference is only significant at the ≃1σ level. We discuss the characteristics of the progenitor, and in particular whether the progenitor could also be composed of stars from the low-metallicity outskirts of a more massive galaxy. Ultimately, the presented data do not allow us to put a firm constraint on the progenitor mass. We show that at least two GC candidates possibly associated with the shell are quite young, with ages below 1.5 Gyr. We also note the presence of a young (∼1 Gyr) stellar population in the center of NGC 474. The two may have resulted from the same event.

The MATLAS deep imaging survey has uncovered a plethora of dwarf galaxies in the low density environment it has mapped. A fraction of them are unusually extended and have a low-surface brightness. Among these so-called ultra-diffuse galaxies, a few seem to host an excess of globular clusters. With the integral-field unit spectrograph MUSE we have observed one of these galaxies - MATLAS J15052031+0148447 (MATLAS-2019) - located towards the nearby group NGC 5846 and measured its systemic velocity,age, and metallicity, and that of its globular clusters candidates. For the stellar body of MATLAS-2019 we derive a metallicity of -1.33+0.19-0.01 dex and an age of 11.2+1.8-0.8 Gyr. For some of the individual GCs and the stacked GC population, we derive consistent ages and metallicities. From the 11 confirmed globular clusters and using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach we derived a dynamical mass-to-light ratio of 4.2+8.6-3.4M/L. This is at the lower end of the luminosity-mass scaling relation defined by the Local Group dwarf galaxies. Furthermore, we couldn't confirm nor reject the possibility of a rotational component of the GC system. If present, this would further modify the inferred mass. Follow-up observations of the globular cluster population and of the stellar body of the galaxy are needed to assess whether this galaxy is lacking dark matter like it was suggested for the pair of dwarf galaxies in the field of NGC 1052, or if this is a miss-interpretation arising from systematic uncertainties of the method commonly used for these systems and the large uncertainties of the individual globular cluster velocities., 10 pages, 9 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

Observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) and molecular gas show that 50% of all nearby early-type galaxies (ETGs) contain some cold gas. Molecular gas is always found in small gas discs in the central region of the galaxy, while neutral hydrogen is often distributed in a low-column density disc or ring typically extending well beyond the stellar body. Dust is frequently found in ETGs as well. The goal of our study is to understand the link between dust and cold gas in nearby ETGs as a function of HI content. We analyse deep optical $g-r$ images obtained with the MegaCam camera at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope for a sample of 21 HI-rich and 41 HI-poor ETGs. We find that all HI-rich galaxies contain dust seen as absorption. Moreover, in 57 percent of these HI-rich galaxies, the dust is distributed in a large-scale spiral pattern. Although the dust detection rate is relatively high in the HI-poor galaxies ($\sim$59 percent), most of these systems exhibit simpler dust morphologies without any evidence of spiral structures. We find that the HI-rich galaxies possess more complex dust morphology extending to almost two times larger radii than HI-poor objects. We measured the dust content of the galaxies from the optical colour excess and find that HI-rich galaxies contain six times more dust (in mass) than HI-poor ones. In order to maintain the dust structures in the galaxies, continuous gas accretion is needed, and the substantial HI gas reservoirs in the outer regions of ETGs can satisfy this need for a long time. We find that there is a good correspondence between the observed masses of the gas and dust, and it is also clear that dust is present in regions further than 3~Reff. Our findings indicate an essential relation between the presence of cold gas and dust in ETGs and offer a way to study the interstellar medium in more detail than what is possible with HI observations., 11 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, and 4 appendices. The Next Generation Virgo Cluster Survey (NGVS) was designed to provide a deep census of baryonic structures in the Virgo cluster. The survey covers the 104 deg2 area from the core of Virgo out to one virial radius, in the u*griz bandpasses, to a point-source depth of g ∼ 25.9 mag (10σ) and a single pixel surface brightness limit of μg ∼ 29 mag arcsec-2 (2σ above the sky). Here we present the final catalog of 404 Virgo galaxies located within a 3.71 deg2 (0.3 Mpc2) region centered on M87, Virgo's dominant galaxy. Of these, 154 were previously uncataloged and span the range 17.8 mag < g < 23.7 mag (-13.4 mag < Mg < -7.4 mag at the 16.5 Mpc distance of Virgo). Extensive simulations show that the NGVS catalog is complete down to g = 18.6 mag (Mg = -12.5 mag, corresponding to a stellar mass ${ \mathcal M }\sim 1.6\times {10}^{7}{{ \mathcal M }}_{\odot }$ for an old stellar population), and 50% complete at g = 22.0 mag (Mg = -9.1 mag, ${ \mathcal M }\sim 6.2\times {10}^{5}{{ \mathcal M }}_{\odot }$ ). The NGVS 50% completeness limit is 3 mag deeper than that of the Virgo Cluster Catalog (VCC), which has served as Virgo's reference standard for over a quarter century, and 2 mag deeper than the VCC detection limit. We discuss the procedure adopted for the identification of objects and the criteria used to assess cluster membership. For each of the 404 galaxies in the NGVS Virgo Cluster core catalog, we present photometric and structural parameters based on a nonparametric curve-of-growth and isophotal analysis, as well as parametric (Sérsic, double-Sérsic, and/or core-Sérsic) fits to the one-dimensional surface brightness profiles and two-dimensional light distributions.

We investigate the properties of long tidal tails using the largest to date sample of 461 merging galaxies with $\log(M_\ast/\rm M_\odot)\geq9.5$ within $0.2 \leq z \leq 1$ from the COSMOS survey in combination with {\it Hubble Space Telescope} imaging data. Long tidal tails can be briefly divided into three shape types: straight (41\,per\,cent), curved (47\,per\,cent) and plume (12\,per\,cent). Their host galaxies are mostly at late stages of merging, although 31\,per\,cent are galaxy pairs with projected separations $d>20$\,kpc. The high formation rate of straight tidal tails needs to be understood as the projection of curved tidal tails accounts for only a small fraction of the straight tails. We identify 165 tidal dwarf galaxies (TDGs), yielding a TDG production rate of 0.36 per merger. Combined with a galaxy merger fraction and a TDG survival rate from the literature, we estimate that $\sim$\,5\,per\,cent of local dwarf galaxies are of tidal origin, suggesting the tidal formation is not an important formation channel for the dwarf galaxies. More than half of TDGs are located at the tip of their host tails. These TDGs have stellar masses in the range of $7.5\leq\log (M_\ast/\rm M_\odot)\leq9.5$ and appear compact with half-light radii following the $M_\ast$ - $R_{\rm e}$ relation of low-mass elliptical galaxies. However, their surface brightness profiles are generally flatter than those of local disc galaxies. We present interferometric HI observations of six double-disc stellar counterrotator ("2$\sigma$") galaxies from the Atlas3D sample. Three are detected in HI emission; two of these are new detections. NGC 7710 shows a modestly asymmetric HI disc, and the atomic gas in PGC 056772 is centrally peaked but too poorly resolved to identify the direction of rotation. IC 0719, the most instructive system in this study, shows an extended, strongly warped disc of 43 kpc diameter, with a faint tail extending towards its neighbor IC 0718. The gas has likely been accreted from this external source during an encounter whose geometry directed the gas into misaligned retrograde orbits (with respect to the primary stellar body of IC 0719). In the interior, where dynamical time-scales are shorter, the HI has settled into the equatorial plane forming the retrograde secondary stellar disc. This is the first direct evidence that a double-disc stellar counterrotator could be formed through the accretion of retrograde gas. However, the dominant formation pathway for the formation of $2\sigma$ galaxies is still unclear. We study the evidence for a diversity of formation processes in early-type galaxies by presenting the first complete volume-limited sample of slow rotators with both integral-field kinematics from the ATLAS3D Project and high spatial resolution photometry from the Hubble Space Telescope. Analysing the nuclear surface brightness profiles of 12 newly imaged slow rotators, we classify their light profiles as core-less, and place an upper limit to the core size of ~10 pc. Considering the full magnitude and volume-limited ATLAS3D sample, we correlate the presence or lack of cores with stellar kinematics, including the proxy for the stellar angular momentum and the velocity dispersion within one half-light radius, stellar mass, stellar age, $\alpha$-element abundance, and age and metallicity gradients. More than half of the slow rotators have core-less light profiles, and they are all less massive than $10^{11}$ Msun. Core-less slow rotators show evidence for counter-rotating flattened structures, have steeper metallicity gradients, and a larger dispersion of gradient values than core slow rotators. Our results suggest that core and core-less slow rotators have different assembly processes, where the former are the relics of massive dissipation-less merging in the presence of central supermassive black holes. Formation processes of core-less slow rotators are consistent with accretion of counter-rotating gas or gas-rich mergers of special orbital configurations, which lower the final net angular momentum of stars, but support star formation. We also highlight core fast rotators as galaxies that share properties of core slow rotators and core-less slow rotators. Based on the data from the Next Generation Virgo cluster Survey (NGVS), we statistically study the photometric properties of globular clusters (GCs), ultra-compact dwarfs (UCDs) and dwarf nuclei in the Virgo core (M87) region. We found an obvious negative color (g - z) gradient in GC system associate with M87, i.e. GCs in the outer regions are bluer. However, such color gradient does not exist in UCD system, neither in dwarf nuclei system around M87. In addition, we found that many UCDs are surrounded by extended, low surface brightness envelopes. The dwarf nuclei and UCDs show different spatial distributions from GCs, with dwarf nuclei and UCDs (especially for the UCDs with visible envelopes) lying at larger distances to the Virgo center. These results support the view that UCDs (at least for a fraction of UCDs) are more tied to dwarf nuclei than to GCs.

Recent advances in deep dedicated imaging surveys over the past decade have uncovered a surprisingly large number of extremely faint low surface brightness galaxies with large physical sizes called ultra diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in clusters and, more recently, in lower density environments. As part of the MATLAS survey, a deep imaging large program at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), our team has identified 2210 dwarf galaxies, 59 (~3%) of which qualify as UDGs. Averaging over the survey area, we find ~0.4 UDG per square degree. They are found in a range of low to moderate density environments, although 61% of the sample fall within the virial radii of groups. Based on a detailed analysis of their photometric and structural properties, we find that the MATLAS UDGs do not show significant differences from the traditional dwarfs, except from the predefined size and surface brightness cut. Their median color is as red as the one measured in galaxy clusters, albeit with a narrower color range. The majority of the UDGs are visually classified as dwarf ellipticals with log stellar masses of ~6.5-8.7. The fraction of nucleated UDGs (~34%) is roughly the same as the nucleated fraction of the traditional dwarfs. Only five (~8%) UDGs show signs of tidal disruption and only two are tidal dwarf galaxy candidates. A study of globular cluster (GC) candidates selected in the CFHT images finds no evidence of a higher GC specific frequency S_N for UDGs than for classical dwarfs, contrary to what is found in most clusters. The UDG halo-to-stellar mass ratio distribution, as estimated from the GC counts, peaks at roughly the same value as for the traditional dwarfs, but spans the smaller range of ~10-2000. A small fraction of early-type galaxies (ETGs) show prolate rotation, i.e. they rotate around their long photometric axis. In simulations, certain configurations of galaxy mergers are known to produce this type of rotation. We investigate the association of prolate rotation and signs of galaxy interactions among the observed galaxies. We collected a sample of 19 nearby ETGs with distinct prolate rotation from the literature and inspected their ground-based deep optical images for interaction signs - 18 in archival images and one in a new image obtained with the Milankovi\'c telescope. Tidal tails, shells, asymmetric/disturbed stellar halos, or on-going interactions are present in all the 19 prolate rotators. Comparing this with the frequency of tidal disturbance among the general sample of ETGs of a roughly similar mass range and surface-brightness limit, we estimate that the chance probability of such an observation is only 0.00087. We also found a significant overabundance of prolate rotators that are hosting multiple stellar shells. The visible tidal features imply a relatively recent galaxy interaction. That agrees with the Illustris large-scale cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, where prolate rotators are predominantly formed in major mergers during the last 6 Gyr. We use hydrodynamical simulations of a Cartwheel-like ring galaxy, modelled as a nearly head-on collision of a small companion with a larger disc galaxy, to probe the evolution of the gaseous structures and flows, and to explore the physical conditions setting the star formation activity. Star formation is first quenched by tides as the companion approaches, before being enhanced shortly after the collision. The ring ploughs the disc material as it radially extends, and almost simultaneously depletes its stellar and gaseous reservoir into the central region, through the spokes, and finally dissolve 200 Myr after the collision. Most of star formation first occurs in the ring before this activity is transferred to the spokes and then the nucleus. We thus propose that the location of star formation traces the dynamical stage of ring galaxies, and could help constrain their star formation histories. The ring hosts tidal compression associated with strong turbulence. This compression yields an azimuthal asymmetry, with maxima reached in the side furthest away from the nucleus, which matches the star formation activity distribution in our models and in observed ring systems. The interaction triggers the formation of star clusters significantly more massive than before the collision, but less numerous than in more classical galaxy interactions. The peculiar geometry of Cartwheel-like objects thus yields a star (cluster) formation activity comparable to other interacting objects, but with notable second order differences in the nature of turbulence, the enhancement of the star formation rate, and the number of massive clusters formed., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Here we report the discovery with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope of an extremely large ($\sim$115 kpc in diameter) HI ring off-centered from a massive quenched galaxy, AGC 203001. This ring does not have any bright extended optical counterpart, unlike several other known ring galaxies. Our deep $g$, $r$, and $i$ optical imaging of the HI ring, using the MegaCam instrument on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, however, shows several regions with faint optical emission at a surface brightness level of $\sim$28 mag/arcsec$^2$. Such an extended HI structure is very rare with only one other case known so far -- the Leo ring. Conventionally, off-centered rings have been explained by a collision with an "intruder" galaxy leading to expanding density waves of gas and stars in the form of a ring. However, in such a scenario the impact also leads to large amounts of star formation in the ring which is not observed in the ring presented in this paper. Several deep observations such as those carried out at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT) have revealed prominent Low Surface Brightness (LSB) fine structures that change the apparent morphology of galaxies. Previous photometry surveys have developed observational techniques which exploit the diffuse light detected in the external regions of galaxies. In these studies the outer perturbations have been identified and classified like tidal tails, stellar streams, and shells. These structures are tracers of interacting and merging events and they keep a memory of the mass assembly of galaxies. Cosmological numerical simulations are needed to estimate their visibility time-scale (among other properties) in order to reconstruct the past merger history of galaxies. In the present work, we analyze a hydrodynamical cosmological simulation to build a comprehensive interpretation of the properties of fine structures. We make a census of several types of LSB fine structures by visual inspection of individual snapshots at various time. We reconstruct the evolution of the number of fine structures detected around an early-type galaxy and we compare with the merger history of the galaxy. We find that most of fine structures are associated with major and intermediate mass merger events. Their survival time scale ranges between 0.7 and 4 Gyr. Shells and streams remain visible for a longer time than tidal tails. These estimates of survival times provide clues to interpret the shape and frequency of fine structures observed in deep images in terms of mass assembly. We find that the detectability of stellar streams is the most sensitive to the surface brightness limit. We see 2-3 times more streams with a surface brightness cut of 33 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ than with 29 mag arcsec$^{-2}$. The formation of globular clusters remains an open debate. Dwarf starburst galaxies are efficient at forming young massive clusters with similar masses as globular clusters and may hold the key to understanding their formation. We study star cluster formation in a tidal debris - including the vicinity of three tidal dwarf galaxies - in a massive gas dominated collisional ring around NGC~5291. These dwarfs have physical parameters which differ significantly from local starbursting dwarfs. They are gas-rich, highly turbulent, have a gas metallicity already enriched up to half-solar, and are expected to be free of dark matter. The aim is to study massive star cluster formation in this as yet unexplored type of environment. We use imaging from the Hubble Space Telescope using broadband filters covering the wavelength range from the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared. We determine the masses and ages of the cluster candidates by using the spectral energy distribution-fitting code CIGALE, carefully considering age-extinction degeneracy effects on the estimation of the physical parameters. We find that the tidal dwarf galaxies in the ring of NGC 5291 are forming star clusters with an average efficiency of $\sim40\%$, comparable to blue compact dwarf galaxies. We also find massive star clusters for which the photometry suggests that they were formed at the very birth of the tidal dwarf galaxies and have survived for several hundred million years. Therefore our study shows that extended tidal dwarf galaxies and compact clusters may be formed simultaneously. In the specific case observed here, the young star clusters are not massive enough to survive for a Hubble time. We have observed the giant elliptical galaxy M87 during the Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Galaxy Evolution (VESTIGE), a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the Canada French Hawaii Telescope (CFHT). The deep narrow-band image confirmed the presence of a filament of ionised gas extending up to ~ 3 kpc in the north-western direction and ~ 8 kpc to the south-east, with a couple of plumes of ionised gas, the weakest of which, at ~ 18 kpc from the nucleus, was previously unknown. The analysis of deep optical images taken from the NGVS survey confirms that this gas filament is associated with dust seen in absorption which is now detected up to ~ 2.4 kpc from the nucleus. We have also analysed the physical and kinematical properties of the ionised gas filament using deep IFU MUSE data covering the central 4.8 x 4.8 kpc^2 of the galaxy. The spectroscopic data confirms a perturbed kinematics of the ionised gas, with differences in velocity of ~ 700-800 km s^-1 on scales of < 1 kpc. The analysis of 2D diagnostic diagrams and the observed relationship between the shock-sensitive [OI]/Halpha line ratio and the velocity dispersion of the gas suggest that the gas is shock-ionised., Accepted for publication to Astronomy & Astrophysics

The possible existence of two dark matter free galaxies (NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4) in the field of the early-type galaxy NGC1052 presents a challenge to theories of dwarf galaxy formation according to the current cosmological paradigm. We carried out a search for signatures of past interactions connected to the putative hosts of NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4 using a very deep L-band image obtained with the 0.7m Jeanne Rich telescope that reach a surface brightness limit of 28.5 mag arcsec-2 in the r band. We found several low-surface brightness features, possibly consistent with an ongoing merger history in this group. We find a tidal interaction between NGC1052 and NGC1047, confirming a physical association. Furthermore we find a stellar loop around NGC1052 in the direction of NGC1042 and a stellar stream pointing in the direction of NGC1052-DF2 - but both are not directly connected. We find no evidence for a recent tidal interaction for NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4. No low surface brightness features have been uncovered around the spiral galaxy NGC1042, which leaves the association (physical or projected) between NGC1052 and NGC1042 ambiguous, though they have similar radial velocities. We investigate the fraction of close pairs and morphologically identified mergers on and above the star-forming main sequence (MS) at 0.2$\leq z\leq$2.0. The novelty of our work lies in the use of a non-parametric morphological classification performed on resolved stellar mass maps, reducing the contamination by non-interacting, high-redshift clumpy galaxies. We find that the merger fraction rapidly rises to $\geq$70% above the MS, implying that -- already at $z{\gtrsim}1$ -- starburst (SB) events ($\Delta_{\rm MS}\geq$0.6) are almost always associated with a major merger (1:1 to 1:6 mass ratio). The majority of interacting galaxies in the SB region are morphologically disturbed, late-stage mergers. Pair fractions show little dependence on MS-offset and pairs are more prevalent than late-stage mergers only in the lower half of the MS. In our sample, major mergers on the MS occur with a roughly equal frequency of $\sim$5-10% at all masses ${\gtrsim} 10^{10}M_{\odot}$. The MS major merger fraction roughly doubles between $z=0.2$ and $z=2$, with morphological mergers driving the overall increase at $z{\gtrsim}1$. The differential redshift evolution of interacting pairs and morphologically classified mergers on the MS can be reconciled by evolving observability timescales for both pairs and morphological disturbances. The observed variation of the late-stage merger fraction with $\Delta_{\rm MS}$ follows the perturbative 2-Star Formation Mode model, where any MS galaxy can experience a continuum of different SFR enhancements. This points to a starburst-merger connection not only for extreme events, but also more moderate bursts which merely scatter galaxies upward within the MS, rather than fully elevating them above it., Comment: Published version

We present the photometric properties of 2210 newly identified dwarf galaxy candidates in the MATLAS fields. The Mass Assembly of early Type gaLAxies with their fine Structures (MATLAS) deep imaging survey mapped ˜142 deg2 of the sky around nearby isolated early type galaxies using MegaCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, reaching surface brightnesses of ˜ 28.5 - 29 in the g-band. The dwarf candidates were identified through a direct visual inspection of the images and by visually cleaning a sample selected using a partially automated approach, and were morphologically classified at the time of identification. Approximately 75% of our candidates are dEs, indicating that a large number of early type dwarfs also populate low density environments, and 23.2% are nucleated. Distances were determined for 13.5% of our sample using pre-existing zspec measurements and HI detections. We confirm the dwarf nature for 99% of this sub-sample based on a magnitude cut Mg = -18. Additionally, most of these (˜90%) have relative velocities suggesting that they form a satellite population around nearby massive galaxies rather than an isolated field sample. Assuming that the candidates over the whole survey are satellites of the nearby galaxies, we demonstrate that the MATLAS dwarfs follow the same scaling relations as dwarfs in the Local Group as well as the Virgo and Fornax clusters. We also find that the nucleated fraction increases with Mg, and find evidence of a morphology-density relation for dwarfs around isolated massive galaxies.

We present the results of a high-resolution, 5 GHz, Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array study of the nuclear radio emission in a representative subset of the Atlas3D survey of early-type galaxies (ETGs). We find that 51 +/- 4% of the ETGs in our sample contain nuclear radio emission with luminosities as low as 10^18 W/Hz. Most of the nuclear radio sources have compact (< 25-110 pc) morphologies, although < 10% display multi-component core+jet or extended jet/lobe structures. Based on the radio continuum properties, as well as optical emission line diagnostics and the nuclear X-ray properties, we conclude that the majority of the central 5 GHz sources detected in the Atlas3D galaxies are associated with the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). However, even at sub-arcsecond spatial resolution, the nuclear radio emission in some cases appears to arise from low-level nuclear star formation rather than an AGN, particularly when molecular gas and a young central stellar population is present. This is in contrast to popular assumptions in the literature that the presence of a compact, unresolved, nuclear radio continuum source universally signifies the presence of an AGN. Additionally, we examine the relationships between the 5 GHz luminosity and various galaxy properties including the molecular gas mass and - for the first time - the global kinematic state. We discuss implications for the growth, triggering, and fueling of radio AGNs, as well as AGN-driven feedback in the continued evolution of nearby ETGs., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 53 pages, 16 figures

International audience; A clear link between a dwarf-dwarf merger event and enhanced star formation (SF) in the recent past was recently identified in the gas-dominated merger remnant VCC 848, offering by far the clearest view of a gas-rich late-stage dwarf-dwarf merger. We present a joint analysis of JVLA H i emission-line mapping, optical imaging and numerical simulations of VCC 848, in order to examine the impact of the merger on the stellar and gaseous distributions. VCC 848 has less than 30% of its H i gas concentrated within the central high-surface-brightness star-forming region, while the remaining H i is entrained in outlying tidal features. Particularly, a well-defined tidal arm reaches N (H i) comparable to the galaxy center but lacks SF. The molecular gas mass inferred from the current SF rate (SFR) dominates over the atomic gas mass in the central ∼ 1.5 kpc. VCC 848 is consistent with being a main-sequence star-forming galaxy for its current stellar mass and SFR. The H ii region luminosity distribution largely agrees with that of normal dwarf irregulars with similar luminosities, except that the brightest H ii region is extraordinarily luminous. Our N-body/hydrodynamical simulations imply that VCC 848 is a merger between a gas-dominated primary progenitor and a gas-bearing star-dominated secondary. The progenitors had their first passage on a near-radial non-coplanar orbit more than 1 Gyr ago. The merger did not build up a core as compact as typical compact dwarfs with centralized starburst, which may be partly ascribed to the star-dominated nature of the secondary, and in a general sense, a negative stellar feedback following intense starbursts triggered at early stages of the merger.

The relative average minimum projected separations of star clusters in the Legacy ExtraGalactic UV Survey (LEGUS) and in tidal dwarfs around the interacting galaxy NGC 5291 are determined as a function of cluster mass to look for cluster-cluster mass segregation. Class 2 and 3 LEGUS clusters, which have a more irregular internal structure than the compact and symmetric class 1 clusters, are found to be mass segregated in low mass galaxies, which means that the more massive clusters are systematically bunched together compared to the lower mass clusters. This mass segregation is not present in high-mass galaxies nor for class 1 clusters. Stephan's Quintet, a compact group of galaxies, is often used as a laboratory to study a number of phenomena, including physical processes in the interstellar medium, star formation, galaxy evolution, and the formation of fossil groups. As such, it has been subject to intensive multi-wavelength observation campaigns. Yet, models lack constrains to pin down the role of each galaxy in the assembly of the group. We revisit here this system with multi-band deep optical images obtained with MegaCam on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), focusing on the detection of low surface brightness (LSB) structures. They reveal a number of extended LSB features, some new, and some already visible in published images but not discussed before. An extended diffuse, reddish, lopsided, halo is detected towards the early-type galaxy NGC 7317, the role of which had so far been ignored in models. The presence of this halo made of old stars may indicate that the group formed earlier than previously thought. Finally, a number of additional diffuse filaments are visible, some close to the foreground galaxy NGC 7331 located in the same field. Substructure in globular cluster (GC) populations around large galaxies is expected in galaxy formation scenarios that involve accretion or merger events, and it has been searched for using direct associations between GCs and structure in the diffuse galaxy light, or with GC kinematics. Here, we present a search for candidate substructures in the GC population around the Virgo cD galaxy M87 through the analysis of the spatial distribution of the GC colors.~The study is based on a sample of $\sim\!1800$ bright GCs with high-quality $u,g,r,i,z,K_s$ photometry, selected to ensure a low contamination by foreground stars or background galaxies.~The spectral energy distributions of the GCs are associated with formal estimates of age and metallicity, which are representative of its position in a 4-D color-space relative to standard single stellar population models.~Dividing the sample into broad bins based on the relative formal ages, we observe inhomogeneities which reveal signatures of GC substructures.~The most significant of these is a spatial overdensity of GCs with relatively young age labels, of diameter $\sim\!0.1$\,deg ($\sim\!30\,$kpc), located to the south of M87.~The significance of this detection is larger than about 5$\sigma$ after accounting for estimates of random and systematic errors.~Surprisingly, no large Virgo galaxy is present in this area, that could potentially host these GCs.~But candidate substructures in the M87 halo with equally elusive hosts have been described based on kinematic studies in the past.~The number of GC spectra available around M87 is currently insufficient to clarify the nature of the new candidate substructure., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

NGC 1052-DF2, an ultra diffuse galaxy (UDG), has been the subject of intense debate. Its alleged absence of dark matter, and the brightness and number excess of its globular clusters (GCs) at an initially assumed distance of 20Mpc, suggested a new formation channel for UDGs. We present the first systematic spectroscopic analysis of both the stellar body and the GCs (six of which were previously known, and one newly confirmed member) of this galaxy using MUSE@VLT. Even though NGC 1052-DF2 does not show any spatially extended emission lines we report the discovery of three planetary nebulae (PNe). We conduct full spectral fitting on the UDG and the stacked spectra of all GCs. The UDG's stellar population is old, 8.9$\pm$1.5 Gyr, metal-poor, with [M/H] = $-$1.07$\pm$0.12 with little or no $\alpha$-enrichment. The stacked spectrum of all GCs indicates a similar age of 8.9$\pm$1.8 Gyr, but lower metallicity, with [M/H] = $-$1.63$\pm$0.09, and similarly low $\alpha$-enrichment. There is no evidence for a variation of age and metallicity in the GC population with the available spectra. The significantly more metal-rich stellar body with respect to its associated GCs, the age of the population, its metallicity and alpha enrichment, are all in line with other dwarf galaxies. NGC 1052-DF2 thus falls on the same empirical mass-metallicity relation as other dwarfs, for the full distance range assumed in the literature. NGC7252, which is one of the nearest major-merger galaxy remnants, is an ideal laboratory to study the processes inherent to the transformation of disc galaxies to ellipticals as observed about ~1Gyr after the collision. We obtained wide-field IFU spectroscopy with the VLT-VIMOS integral-field spectrograph covering the central 50"x50" of NGC7252 to map the stellar and ionised gas kinematics, and the distribution and conditions of the ionised gas, revealing the extent of ongoing star formation and recent star formation history. We find that the inner gas disc is not counter-rotating with respect to the stars and that the stellar kinematics appear complex with a clear indication of a prolate-like rotation component suggesting a polar merger configuration. The ongoing star formation rate is 2.2+-0.6 M_sun/yr and implies a typical depletion time of 2Gyr given the molecular gas content. Furthermore, the spatially-resolved star formation history suggests a slight radial dependence, moving outwards at later times. We confirm a large AGN-ionised gas cloud previously discovered 5kpc south of the nucleus, and find higher ionisation also at the galaxy centre relative to the surrounding gas disc. Although the higher ionisation towards the centre is potentially degenerate within the central star forming ring, it may be associated with a low-luminosity AGN. Although NGC7252 has been classified as post-starburst galaxy at the centre, the elliptical-like major-merger remnant still appears very active. A central kpc-scale gas disc has presumably re-formed quickly within the last 100Myr after final coalescence. The disc features ongoing star formation, implying Gyr long timescale to reach the red sequence through gas consumption alone. While NGC7252 is useful to probe the transformation from discs to ellipticals, it is not well-suited to study the transformation from blue to red at this point., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures, Published in A&A

We derive stellar population parameters for a representative sample of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs) and a large sample of massive globular clusters (GCs) with stellar masses $\gtrsim$ 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$ in the central galaxy M87 of the Virgo galaxy cluster, based on model fitting to the Lick-index measurements from both the literature and new observations. After necessary spectral stacking of the relatively faint objects in our initial sample of 40 UCDs and 118 GCs, we obtain 30 sets of Lick-index measurements for UCDs and 80 for GCs. The M87 UCDs have ages $\gtrsim$ 8 Gyr and [$\alpha$/Fe] $\simeq$ 0.4 dex, in agreement with previous studies based on smaller samples. The literature UCDs, located in lower-density environments than M87, extend to younger ages and smaller [$\alpha$/Fe] (at given metallicities) than M87 UCDs, resembling the environmental dependence of the Virgo dE nuclei. The UCDs exhibit a positive mass-metallicity relation (MZR), which flattens and connects compact ellipticals at stellar masses $\gtrsim$ 10$^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$. The Virgo dE nuclei largely follow the average MZR of UCDs, whereas most of the M87 GCs are offset towards higher metallicities for given stellar masses. The difference between the mass-metallicity distributions of UCDs and GCs may be qualitatively understood as a result of their different physical sizes at birth in a self-enrichment scenario or of galactic nuclear cluster star formation efficiency being relatively low in a tidal stripping scenario for UCD formation. Deep exposure imaging of early-type galaxies (ETGs) are revealing the second-order complexity of these objects, which have been long considered uniform, dispersion-supported spheroidals. "Fine structure" features (e.g. ripples, plumes, tidal tails, rings) as well as depleted stellar cores (i.e. central light deficits) characterize a number of massive ETG galaxies, and can be interpreted as the result of galaxy-galaxy interactions. We discuss how the timescale for the evolution of cores and fine structures are comparable, and hence it is expected that they develop in parallel after the major interaction event which shaped the ETG. Using archival data, we compare the "depleted stellar mass" (i.e. the mass missing from the depleted stellar core) against the prominence of the fine structure features, and observe that they correlate inversely. This result confirms our expectation that, while the Super Massive Black Hole (SMBH) binary (constituted by the SMBHs of the merger progenitors) excavates the core via three-body interactions, the gravitational potential of the newborn galaxy relaxes, and the fine structures fade below detection levels. We expect the inverse correlation to hold at least within the first Gyr from the merger which created the SMBH binary; after then, the fine structure evolves independently., Comment: Accepted for publication on MNRAS

Collisional debris around interacting and post-interacting galaxies often display condensations of gas and young stars that can potentially form gravitationally bound objects: Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs). We summarise recent results on TDGs, which are originally published in Lelli et al. (2015, A&amp, A).We study a sample of six TDGs around three different interacting systems, using high-resolution HI observations from the Very Large Array. We find that the HI emission associated to TDGs can be described by rotating disc models. These discs, however, would have undergone less than one orbit since the time of the TDG formation, raising the question of whether they are in dynamical equilibrium. Assuming that TDGs are in dynamical equilibrium, we find that the ratio of dynamical mass to baryonic mass is consistent with one, implying that TDGs are devoid of dark matter. This is in line with the results of numerical simulations where tidal forces effectively segregate dark matter in the halo from baryonic matter in the disc, which ends up forming tidal tails and TDGs.

We investigate the evolution of stellar population gradients from $z=2$ to $z=0$ in massive galaxies at large radii ($r > 2R_{\mathrm{eff}}$) using ten cosmological zoom simulations of halos with $6 \times 10^{12} M_{\odot} < M_{\mathrm{halo}} < 2 \times 10^{13}M_{\odot}$. The simulations follow metal cooling and enrichment from SNII, SNIa and AGB winds. We explore the differential impact of an empirical model for galactic winds that reproduces the mass-metallicity relation and its evolution with redshift. At larger radii the galaxies, for both models, become more dominated by stars accreted from satellite galaxies in major and minor mergers. In the wind model, fewer stars are accreted, but they are significantly more metal poor resulting in steep global metallicity ($\langle \nabla Z_{\mathrm{stars}} \rangle= -0.35$ dex/dex) and color (e.g. $\langle \nabla g-r \rangle = -0.13$ dex/dex) gradients in agreement with observations. In contrast, colour and metallicity gradients of the models without winds are inconsistent with observations. Age gradients are in general mildly positive at $z=0$ ($\langle \nabla Age_{\mathrm{stars}} \rangle= 0.04$ dex/dex) with significant differences between the models at higher redshift. We demonstrate that for the wind model, stellar accretion is steepening existing in-situ metallicity gradients by about 0.2 dex by the present day and helps to match observed gradients of massive early-type galaxies at large radii. Colour and metallicity gradients are significantly steeper for systems which have accreted stars in minor mergers, while galaxies with major mergers have relatively flat gradients, confirming previous results. Deep imaging programs, such as MATLAS which has just been completed at the CFHT, allows us to study with their diffuse light the outer stellar populations around large number of galaxies. We have carried out a systematic census of their fine structures, i.e. the collisional debris from past mergers. We have identified among them stellar streams from minor mergers, tidal tails from gas-rich major mergers, plumes from gas-poor major mergers, and shells from intermediate mass mergers. Having estimated the visibility and life time of each of these structures with numerical simulations, we can reconstruct the past mass assembly of the host galaxy.
