We present the thermodynamic and transport properties of the QGP close to equilibrium in the framework of effective models with Nf=3 active quark flavours such as the Polyakov extended Nambu-Jona Lasinio (PNJL) and dynamical quasiparticle model with the CEP (DQPM-CP). Considering the transport coefficients and the EoS of the QGP phase, we compare our results with various results from the literature. Furthermore, out-of equilibrium properties of the QGP medium and in particular, the effect of a μB- dependence of thermodynamic and transport properties of the QGP are studied within the Parton-Hadron-String-Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach, which covers the full evolution of the system during HICs. We find that bulk observables and flow coefficients for strange hadrons as well as for antiprotons are more sensitive to the properties of the QGP, in particular to the μB - dependence of the QGP interactions., Published by EDP Sciences, Les Ulis

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text., Objective: Atherosclerosis is the underlying cause of most cardiovascular diseases. The main cell types associated with disease progression in the vascular wall are endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and macrophages. Although their role in atherogenesis has been extensively described, molecular mechanisms underlying gene expression changes remain unknown. The objective of this study was to characterize microRNA (miRNA)-related regulatory mechanisms taking place in the aorta during atherosclerosis. Approach and Results: We analyzed the miRNA expression changes in primary human aortic endothelial cells and human umbilical vein endothelial cells, human aortic smooth muscle cells, and macrophages (CD14+) under various proatherogenic stimuli by integrating GRO-seq, miRNA-seq, and RNA-seq data. Despite the highly cell-type-specific expression of multi-variant primary miRNAs, the majority of mature miRNAs were found to be common to all cell types and dominated by 2 to 5 abundant miRNA species. We demonstrate that transcription contributes significantly to the mature miRNA levels although this is dependent on miRNA stability. An analysis of miRNA effects in relation to target mRNA pools highlighted pathways and targets through which miRNAs could affect atherogenesis in a cell-type-dependent manner. Finally, we validate miR-100-5p as a cell-type specific regulator of inflammatory and HIPPO-YAP/TAZ-pathways. Conclusions: This integrative approach allowed us to characterize miRNA dynamics in response to a proatherogenic stimulus and identify potential mechanisms by which miRNAs affect atherogenesis in a cell-type-specific manner.

The improvements in GPU hardware, including hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and the push for fully dynamic realistic-looking video games, has been driving more research in the use of ray tracing in real-time applications. The work described in this thesis covers multiple aspects such as optimisations, adapting existing offline methods to real-time constraints, and adding effects which were hard to simulate without the new hardware, all working towards a fully dynamic surface illumination rendering in real-time.Our first main area of research concerns photon-based techniques, commonly used to render caustics. As many photons can be required for a good coverage of the scene, an efficient approach for detecting which ones contribute to a pixel is essential. We improve that process by adapting and extending an existing acceleration data structure; if performance is paramount, we present an approximation which trades off some quality for a 2–3× improvement in rendering time. The tracing of all the photons, and especially when long paths are needed, had become the highest cost. As most paths do not change from frame to frame, we introduce a validation procedure allowing the reuse of as many as possible, even in the presence of dynamic lights and objects. Previous algorithms for associating pixels and photons do not robustly handle specular materials, so we designed an approach leveraging ray tracing hardware to allow for caustics to be visible in mirrors or behind transparent objects.Our second research focus switches from a light-based perspective to a camera-based one, to improve the picking of light sources when shading: photon-based techniques are wonderful for caustics, but not as efficient for direct lighting estimations. When a scene has thousands of lights, only a handful can be evaluated at any given pixel due to time constraints. Current selection methods in video games are fast but at the cost of introducing bias. By adapting an acceleration data structure from offline rendering that stochastically chooses a light source based on its importance, we provide unbiased direct lighting evaluation at about 30 fps. To support dynamic scenes, we organise it in a two-level system making it possible to only update the parts containing moving lights, and in a more efficient way.We worked on top of the new ray tracing hardware to handle lighting situations that previously proved too challenging, and presented optimisations relevant for future algorithms in that space. These contributions will help in reducing some artistic constraints while designing new virtual scenes for real-time applications.

This article explores how academics with caring responsibilities negotiate the mobility imperative, with specific reference to attending conferences. We argue that, in the neoliberal and ‘careless’ context of higher education (Lynch, 2010), negotiating conflicting identities of academic and carer is fraught with tensions for carers as they try to reconcile the mobility imperative with their caring responsibilities. We acknowledge and also challenge the naturalised relationship between care and femininity, and use a feminist poststructuralist approach to analyse the competing discourses surrounding academic and care work. We draw on two distinct, but related, research projects with predominantly UK-based participants. Moreau’s project (‘Carers and Careers’, 2015-17) explored how academic carers negotiate academic cultures which tend to render care work invisible, using interviews with academic carers and policy staff. Henderson’s project (‘In Two Places at Once’, 2017-18) focused on the impact of caring responsibilities on academics’ conference participation, using diary-interview method.

We extend the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach in the partonic sector by explicitly calculating the total and differential partonic scattering cross sections as a function of temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $\mu_B$ on the basis of the effective propagators and couplings from the Dynamical QuasiParticle Model (DQPM) that is matched to reproduce the equation of state of the partonic system above the deconfinement temperature $T_c$ from lattice QCD. The ratio of shear viscosity $\eta$ over entropy density $s$, i.e. $\eta/s$, is evaluated using the collisional widths and compared to lQCD calculations for $\mu_B$ = 0 as well. We find only a very modest change of $\eta/s$ with the baryon chemical $\mu_B$. This also holds for a variety of hadronic observables from central A+A and C+Au collisions in the energy range 5 GeV $\leq \sqrt{s_{NN}} \leq$ 200 GeV when implementing the differential cross sections into the PHSD approach. We only observe small differences in the strangeness and antibaryon sector with practically no sensitivity of rapidity and $p_T$ distributions to the $\mu_B$ dependence of the partonic cross sections. Since we find only small traces of a $\mu_B$-dependence in heavy-ion observables - although the effective partonic masses and widths as well as their partonic cross sections clearly depend on $\mu_B$ - this implies that one needs a sizable partonic density and large space-time QGP volume to explore the dynamics in the partonic phase. These conditions are only fulfilled at high bombarding energies where $\mu_B$ is, however, rather low. On the other hand, when decreasing the bombarding energy and thus increasing $\mu_B$, the hadronic phase becomes dominant and accordingly, it will be difficult to extract signals from the partonic dynamics based on "bulk" observables., Comment: 31 pages, 30 figures

Complement-mediated intravascular hemolysis occurs in canine immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). Complement inhibitors might enhance treatment of this disease. Dimers of acetylsalicylic acid such as 5,5’-methylenebis(2-acetoxybenzoic acid) (DAS) have been reported to inhibit complement. This study aimed to characterize the pharmacokinetics and safety profile of a single 3 mg/kg IV dose of DAS in 6 healthy mixed-breed dogs. Serum concentrations of DAS and its primary metabolites were measured by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry at baseline and at 5, 10 and 30 min, and 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 18 and 24 h post-administration. Additional blood samples were collected 7 and 14 days after drug administration. Complete blood counts, serum chemistry panels, C-reactive protein measurements, coagulation testing and cytokine analyses were used for safety monitoring. Following IV administration of 3 mg/kg DAS, the estimated mean maximum plasma concentration was 54,709 ng/mL. Pharmacokinetic modeling suggested that DAS was eliminated with a half-life value of 8.1 h, equivalent to a clearance of 6.93 L/hr kg and a volume of distribution of 56 mL/kg. Plasma concentrations of the metabolites were measured rapidly (within 15−60 min for M1 and M2 respectively). Overall, the relative exposure to M1 and M2 suggest significant biotransformation of DAS occurred, but DAS was the most abundant circulating species. No adverse clinical reactions were noted following DAS administration and safety studies suggested DAS caused no inflammatory response or coagulation disturbance. Further clinical evaluation of DAS is warranted.

Mountain regions of the humid tropics are characterized by steep slopes and heavy rains. These regions are thus prone to both high surface runoff and soil erosion. In Southeast Asia, uplands are also subject to rapid land-use change, predominantly as a result of increased population pressure and market forces. Since 1998, the Houay Pano site, located in northern Lao PDR (19.85°N 102.17°E) within the Mekong basin, aims at assessing the long-term impact of the conversion of traditional slash-and-burn cultivation systems to commercial perennial monocultures such as teak tree plantations, on the catchment hydrological response and sediment yield. The instrumented site monitors hydro-meteorological and soil loss parameters at both microplot (1 m2) and small catchment (0.6 km2) scales. The monitored catchment is part of the network of critical zone observatories named Multiscale TROPIcal CatchmentS (M-TROPICS). The data shared by M-TROPICS in Houay Pano are (1) rainfall, (2) air temperature, air relative humidity, wind speed, and global radiation, (3) catchment land use, (4) stream water level, suspended particulate matter, bed particulate matter and stones, (5) soil surface features, and (6) soil surface runoff and soil detachment. The dataset has already been used to interpret suspended particulate matter and bed particulate matter sources and dynamics, to assess the impact of land-use change on catchment hydrology, soil erosion, and sediment yields, to understand bacteria fate and weed seed transport across the catchment, and to build catchment-scale models focused on hydrology and water quality issues. The dataset may be further used to e.g. assess the role of headwater catchments in large tropical river basin hydrology, support the interpretation of new variables measured in the catchment (e.g. contaminants other than fecal bacteria), and assess the relative impacts of both climate and land-use change on the catchment.

Genetic factors underlying coronary artery disease (CAD) have been widely studied using genome-wide association studies (GWASs). However, the functional understanding of the CAD loci has been limited by the fact that a majority of GWAS variants are located within non-coding regions with no functional role. High cholesterol and dysregulation of the liver metabolism such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease confer an increased risk of CAD. Here, we studied the function of non-coding single-nucleotide polymorphisms in CAD GWAS loci located within liver-specific enhancer elements by identifying their potential target genes using liver cis-eQTL analysis and promoter Capture Hi-C in HepG2 cells. Altogether, 734 target genes were identified of which 121 exhibited correlations to liver-related traits. To identify potentially causal regulatory SNPs, the allele-specific enhancer activity was analyzed by (1) sequence-based computational predictions, (2) quantification of allele-specific transcription factor binding, and (3) STARR-seq massively parallel reporter assay. Altogether, our analysis identified 1,277 unique SNPs that display allele-specific regulatory activity. Among these, susceptibility enhancers near important cholesterol homeostasis genes (APOB, APOC1, APOE, and LIPA) were identified, suggesting that altered gene regulatory activity could represent another way by which genetic variation regulates serum lipoprotein levels. Using CRISPR-based perturbation, we demonstrate how the deletion/activation of a single enhancer leads to changes in the expression of many target genes located in a shared chromatin interaction domain. Our integrative genomics approach represents a comprehensive effort in identifying putative causal regulatory regions and target genes that could predispose to clinical manifestation of CAD by affecting liver function.

This chapter draws on the research conducted by the author on gender in the teaching profession over the past decade. It is informed by a broad range of data, including semi-structured interviews with teachers, statistical data analysis and policy analysis. It explores the gendered assumptions underpinning discourses of teaching. It critically engages with the claim that teaching is ‘feminised’ (a polysemous term), and the rather widespread view that the masculinisation of teaching is desirable. The chapter analyses the range of discourses of teaching and gender which circulate in a diversity of contexts, including in policies, the media and in schools, with specific reference to the UK (particularly, though not only, England). It reflects on the effects of these discourses on gender equality and on how these can be countered with the emergence of counter-discourses which do not invisibilise, misrecognise and devalue what and who is associated with ‘femininity’.

Our study is based on the Parton-Hadron-String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach employing a non-perturbative QCD description of the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) in terms of dynamical quasiparticles and the EoS based on lattice QCD. We compare the PHSD results for charm observables with the calculations from BAMPS (Boltzmann Approach to Multi-Parton Scatterings) which is based on perturbative QCD with massless partons and interaction cross sections calculated in leading order of the QCD coupling. We compare the $p_T$ dependence of the ratio $R_{AA}$ of $D$-mesons in $A+A$ over $p+p$ collisions scaled by the number of binary collisions $N_{bin}$ as well as the elliptic flow $v_2$ of $D$-mesons calculated within the PHSD and BAMPS at LHC energies. In other study, based on the PHSD calculations we find that the dileptons from correlated $D-$meson semi-leptonic decays dominate the 'thermal' radiation from the QGP in central Pb+Pb collisions at the intermediate masses ($1.2 < M < 3$ GeV) for higher invariant energies. However, for invariant energies $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} < 40$ GeV the QGP radiation overshines the contribution from $D,{\bar D}$ decays such that one should observe a rather clear signal from the partonic dilepton radiation. This finding provides promising perspectives to measure the QGP radiation in the dilepton experiments at RHIC BES and the future FAIR/NICA facilities., Published by Sissa Medialab Trieste, Italy

We present the basic ideas of the Parton–Hadron–String Dynamics (PHSD) transport approach which is a microscopic covariant dynamical model for strongly interacting systems formulated on the basis of Kadanoff–Baym equations for Green’s functions in phase-space representation (in 1st order gradient expansion beyond the quasiparticle approximation). The approach consistently describes the full evolution of a relativistic heavy-ion collision from the initial hard scattering and string formation through the dynamical deconfinement phase transition to the strongly interacting quark-gluon plasma (sQGP) as well as hadronization and the subsequent interactions in the expanding hadronic phase. The PHSD approach has been applied to p+p, p+A, and A+A collisions from lower SIS to LHC energies and been successful in describing a large number of experimental data including single-particle spectra, collective flow and electromagnetic probes. Some highlights of recent PHSD results will be presented.
