International audience; This study tests the application of combined detrital apatite fission track (AFT) and U-Pb dating to infer both glacial erosion spatial patterns and long-term rock cooling histories in Alpine mountainous settings. We have dated 716 detrital apatite grains from glacial sediments collected in the Maurienne and Arve valleys (Western European Alps, France) from moraine deposits corresponding to different stages of glacial retreat since the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM, ca. 24-21 ka).The Maurienne valley crosses the internal and external Alps, which exhibit contrasting in-situ AFT and U-Pb ages. Here, we present the measured distribution of both detrital AFT and U-Pb ages at 6 locations along the valley, with catchment elevations ranging from 390 to 1740 m. We show that during glacial retreat, erosion is mainly concentrated in the downstream part of the glacier, near the sampled moraine deposits. This inference suggests that during glacial retreat, glacial erosion is more effective below the ELA (Equilibrium Line Altitude) and specifically close to the glacier front, in areas where ice flow velocity is high and subglacial water is abundant, as predicted by ice-dynamics reconstructions in the European Alps over the last 20 ka.In the Arve valley, previous studies showed that in situ AFT ages are systematically younger than 7 Ma for the Mont-Blanc massif. We compare the thermal history obtained from these literature bedrock-derived data to that derived from the new detrital AFT data collected in the Little Ice Age (LIA) moraine, just at the front of the Bossons glacier (~1300 m elevation). We also compare our results with 5 other samples down the valley at catchment elevations between 460 and 1050 m to evaluate potential changes in the detrital AFT signal as well as the consistency in the retrieved long-term cooling history.Based on these first results, we plan to extend our study to other areas (e.g., Patagonia) to investigate both (1) spatial patterns of glacial erosion for older glacial periods (pre-LGM), and (2) long-term rock cooling histories from moraine deposits where modern bedrock is inaccessible (e.g. under modern glaciers or ice fields).

Lateglacial (19.0–11.7 ka ago) paleo-temperature records in the Western European Alps document several short-term cooling episodes within the general post-Last Glacial Maximum warming trend, in phase with North Hemisphere climatic oscillations. Alpine paleo-precipitation reconstructions are instead rare, and further constraints are needed in order to assess whether Lateglacial cold periods were associated with a modified atmospheric circulation pattern over the European Alps. The Alpine paleoglacial record offers a quantitative framework to investigate Lateglacial paleoclimatic conditions and glacier sensitivity in response to both temperature and precipitation changes. Through the combination of 10Be surface-exposure dating of glacial landforms and deposits constraining ice front and surface, together with numerical glacier simulations (iSOSIA), our study aims to reconstruct in space and time the main Lateglacial ice stages and associated paleo-climatic conditions in three tributary valleys (Valpelline, Valsavarenche and Val di Cogne) located within the Dora Baltea catchment (north-western Italian Alps). Our dating-modelling approach reveals in all the three investigated sectors two distinct paleoglacier stages at ca. 13 and 11 ka, documenting respectively the ice configurations at the transition between the Oldest Dryas cold period and the Bølling-Allerød interstadial, and between the Younger Dryas cold period and the early Holocene warming. Numerical ice-simulation outcomes suggest a similar-to-today precipitation pattern during the two ice stages, with either same absolute or homogeneously decreased precipitation values over the Dora Baltea catchment, although a unique quantitative solution of paleo-precipitation magnitudes could not be constrained from our dataset. Using present-day precipitation pattern and magnitude, our results provide paleo-temperature offsets from present-day between −3.3 and −3.8 °C for the older glacial stage, and −2.7 to −3.2 °C for the younger glacial stage, coinciding with the upper range of paleo-temperature reconstructions from other paleoclimatic proxies. Finally, Alpine glaciers’ sensitivity to climate fluctuations differ significantly between the investigated catchments, with a much higher glacier sensitivity to changes in the Equilibrium Line Altitude in the northern (Valpelline) compared to the southern (Valsavarenche and Val di Cogne) tributaries, reflecting different topographic and/or climatic conditions between the three valleys.

Diffusion properties of cosmogenic 3He in quartz at Earth surface temperatures offer the potential to directly reconstruct the evolution of past in situ temperatures from formerly glaciated areas, which is important information for improving our understanding of glacier–climate interactions. In this study, we apply cosmogenic 3He paleothermometry to rock surfaces gradually exposed from the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the Holocene period along two deglaciation profiles in the European Alps (Mont Blanc and Aar massifs). Laboratory experiments conducted on one representative sample per site indicate significant differences in 3He diffusion kinetics between the two sites, with quasi-linear Arrhenius behavior observed in quartz from the Mont Blanc site and complex Arrhenius behavior observed in quartz from the Aar site, which we interpret to indicate the presence of multiple diffusion domains (MDD). Assuming the same diffusion kinetics apply to all quartz samples along each profile, forward model simulations indicate that the cosmogenic 3He abundance in all the investigated samples should be at equilibrium with present-day temperature conditions. However, measured cosmogenic 3He concentrations in samples exposed since before the Holocene indicate an apparent 3He thermal signal significantly colder than today. This observed 3He thermal signal cannot be explained with a realistic post-LGM mean annual temperature evolution in the European Alps at the study sites. One hypothesis is that the diffusion kinetics and MDD model applied may not provide sufficiently accurate, quantitative paleo-temperature estimates in these samples; thus, while a pre-Holocene 3He thermal signal is indeed preserved in the quartz, the helium diffusivity would be lower at Alpine surface temperatures than our diffusion models predict. Alternatively, if the modeled helium diffusion kinetics is accurate, the observed 3He abundances may reflect a complex geomorphic and/or paleoclimatic evolution, with much more recent ground temperature changes associated with the degradation of alpine permafrost.

Paleoglacier reconstructions in the northern and southern forelands of the European Alps indicate a synchronous Late Pleistocene glacial maximum during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 2, in phase with global ice volume records. However, strong controversy remains for the western foreland, where scarce and indirect dating as well as modeling studies suggest glacial maxima out of phase with the rest of the Alps. New luminescence dating brings the first direct Late Pleistocene glacial chronology for the western Alpine foreland and reveals two major glacier advances of similar maximum extent, at ca. 75–60 and ca. 40–30 ka, coinciding with MIS 4 and late MIS 3. We propose that asynchrony in glacial maxima between the western and the northern and southern Alpine forelands results from a progressive spatial reorganization of the atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic in response to Northern Hemisphere ice-sheet fluctuations. While such a feedback mechanism has emerged from general circulation models, our Late Pleistocene paleoglacial reconstruction permits tracking of the spatiotemporal evolution of moisture advection patterns over Western Europe.

International audience; The Java Back-arc Thrust scars the entire back-arc area of Java Island, but the faults' nature, timing, and activity remain partly elusive. Characterizing the structure and activity of the seismogenic Java Back-arc Thrust (historical earthquakes up to 7 Mw) is a cornerstone to evaluate associated geohazards. We focus on the western part of Java Back-arc Thrust that reaches the megalopolis of Jakarta. We combine morphotectonic data, seismic reflection, electric resistivity profiles, kinematic, structural field measurements, paleoseismological trenching, and sediment dating (optically stimulated luminescence and 14C). Our results suggest that the interplay between the faults, volcanoes, and sedimentary basin modulates the propagation of the fault system across and along-strike. The West Java Back-arc Thrust has been active from Pliocene to Recent, but with a laterally variable tempo and tectonic regime. While tectonic activity was sustained for longer times in the eastern part, the West Java Back-arc Thrust broke through the Jakarta Basin in the west, possibly only since the Late Pleistocene, and partitions into a network of immature transpressive structures. We conclude that the West Java Back-arc Thrust has a high seismic hazard that requires a careful risk evaluation along its trace, as it threatens the numerous infrastructures of the densely populated West Java.

Disentangling the influence of lithology from the respective roles of climate, topography and tectonic forcing on catchment denudation is often challenging in mountainous landscapes due to the diversity of geomorphic processes in action and of spatial and temporal scales involved. The Dora Baltea catchment (western Italian Alps) is an ideal setting for such investigation, since its large drainage system, extending from the Mont Blanc Massif to the Po Plain, cuts across different major lithotectonic units of the western Alps, whereas this region has experienced relatively homogeneous climatic conditions and glacial history throughout the Quaternary. We acquired new Be-10-derived catchment-wide denudation rates from 18 river-sand samples collected both along the main Dora Baltea river and at the outlet of its main tributaries. The inferred denudation rates vary between 0.2 and 0.9 mm yr(-1), consistent with previously published values across the European Alps. Spatial variability in denudation rates was statistically compared with topographic, environmental and geological metrics. Be-10-derived denudation rates do not correlate with modern precipitation and rock geodetic uplift. We find, rather, that catchment topography, in turn conditioned by bedrock structures and erodibility (lithotectonic origin) and glacial overprint, is the main driver of Be-10-derived denudation patterns. We calculated the highest denudation rate for the Mont Blanc Massif, whose granitoid rocks and long-term tectonic uplift support high elevations, steep slopes and high relief and thus favour intense glacial and periglacial processes and recurring rockfall events. Finally, our results, in agreement with modern sediment budgets, demonstrate that the high sediment input from the Mont Blanc catchment dominates the Dora Baltea sediment flux, explaining the constant low Be-10 concentrations measured along the Dora Baltea course even downstream the multiple junctions with tributary catchments., Earth Surface Dynamics, 10 (3), ISSN:2196-632X, ISSN:2196-6311

Erosion is a key parameter involved in the evolution of the Earth’s surface, and regulates the coupling between climatic and tectonic processes. The quantification of erosion at different spatial and temporal scales is a major challenge in earth sciences to better understand the nature and importance of these interactions. In addition, erosion processes are associated with significant natural hazards like landslides and debris flow. These relatively low-frequency but high-intensity events seem to play an important role in erosion budgets and in the long-term landscape evolution. It has been shown that rare and catastrophic erosion events can even dominate the long-term erosion rates. The aim of this study is to understand the respective role of long-term/continuous erosion dynamics versus extreme and rare events on long-term landscape evolution.We focused on the ideal case of the western Peruvian Andes between Lima and Pisco (12°S and 13°S), where the hyper arid environment allows unequaled preservation of Pleistocene alluvial archives. This area presents several alluvial deposits including at least three mega-alluvial fans resulting from the upstream erosion of the western Andes and located at the outlet of the Rio Rimac in Lima, Rio Omas and Rio Cañete. These alluvial mega-deposits are mainly made up of rounded pebbles with a sandy matrix intercalated by sand lenses and levels of debris-flow deposits. To obtain the paleo-erosion rates from these deposits, we used in-situ produced cosmogenic 10Be concentrations in quartz and feldspar in deposits previously dated by Optically-Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) with ages ranging from 10 to 90 ka.Our results show that the measured paleo-erosion rates differ depending on the type of deposits. In the fine grain debris-flow deposits, the paleo-erosion rates are of the same order of magnitude as the erosion rates measured in the current rivers, ranging from 10 to 100 mm/ka. But, paleo-erosion rates measured in conglomeratic deposits are ranging from 200 to 600 mm/ka and are therefore higher than erosion rates measured in both modern river sands and any debris-flow deposits. This shows that in order to precisely understand the governing erosional processes for a given context, it is necessary to constrain both the erosion rates responding to continuous and non-exceptional forcing (recorded in conglomerate deposits), and erosion rates related to extreme events recorded by low-frequency and high-intensity debris-flow deposits.

Climate exerts a primary control on glacier mass balance, driving changes in ice flux, which affects basal sliding and subglacial erosion. Although past glacier reconstructions have been widely used as paleo-climate proxies, extracting quantitative temperature/precipitation data from paleo-glaciers is still challenging. The iSOSIA ice model was used over a synthetic landscape to quantitatively investigate the non-linear dependence of glacier geometry and ice dynamics on climate forcing, as well as to analyse how spatial patterns of subglacial erosion and erosion rates vary between the accumulation and ablation zones for different climatic settings. We performed 10 calibrated climatic scenarios with different combinations of temperature and precipitation rate in two separate sets of simulations [maintaining either same equilibrium line altitude (ELA) or same ice extent; SA and ST, respectively]. Our results reinforce the role of climate and the importance of ice flux in conditioning glacier geometry. In SA simulations, contrasting climatic scenarios showed a major influence on glacier length and thickness. In ST simulations, calibrated ELAs presented a variability of over 300 m in order to maintain similar ice extent, but showed reduced changes in glacier thickness. These results highlight the importance of ice flux to predict glacier geometry, when compared to the overall mass balance from an ELA estimate. Subglacial abrasion and quarrying showed notable differences between the accumulation and ablation zones for varying climatic forcing, with multimodal erosion distributions for increased precipitation/temperature, shifting erosion towards higher-elevation tributaries and connecting erosion patches in the ablation zone. Such trends highlight the role of subglacial hydrology and ice-bed contact (cavitation) in dictating patterns of subglacial erosion, while the depth of erosion relates closely to ice flux and climate inputs. Our results have potential implications for paleo-climate reconstructions based on glacier geometry and provide insights on how subglacial erosion can help estimate paleo-climatic conditions from paleo-glacial records.

Several palaeoclimatic archives have documented the pronounced climatic and environmental change associated with the Lateglacial–Holocene transition in the European Alps. However, the geomorphic response to this major environmental transition has only been punctually investigated. In this study, we propose a detailed reconstruction of post‐Last Glacial Maximum palaeoenvironmental conditions and geomorphic connectivity in the Sanetsch Pass area (2252 m a.s.l., western Swiss Alps) based on a multi‐method approach combining geomorphological and sedimentological field investigations with quantitative sedimentology and geochronology. Samples for sediment characterization (grain size, micromorphology and X‐ray diffraction) and geochronology (optically stimulated luminescence and 10Be surface exposure dating) were collected from three representative landforms of the study area: a high‐elevation silty deposit covered by patterned ground, an alluvial fan, and a hummocky moraine covered by rockfall deposits. Our results reveal the geomorphic history of the three deposits and their connectivity through sediment cascade. These results highlight the development of rapid and most probably transient landscape changes in high Alpine regions during the Lateglacial–Holocene transition, with an increase in sediment flux and the establishment of paraglacial and periglacial geomorphic processes.

Active rock glaciers are some of the most frequent cryospheric landforms in midlatitude high-elevation mountain ranges. Their activity strongly influences the hydrology and geomorphology of alpine environments over short (years to decades) and long (centuries to millennia) timescales. Being conspicuous expressions of mountain permafrost and important water reserves in the form of ground ice, rock glaciers are seen as increasingly important actors in the geomorphological and hydrological evolution of mountain systems, especially in the context of current climate change. Over geological timescales, rock glaciers both reflect paleoclimate conditions and transport rock boulders produced by headwall erosion, and they therefore participate in shaping high mountain slopes. However, the dynamics of rock glaciers and their evolution over different timescales remain under-constrained. In this study, we adopt a multi-method approach, including field observations, remote sensing, and geochronology, to investigate the rock glacier system of the Vallon de la Route (Combeynot Massif, western French Alps). Remotely sensed images and correlation techniques are used to document the displacement field of the rock glacier over timescales ranging from days to decades. Additionally, to estimate displacement over periods from centuries to millennia, we employ terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (quartz 10Be) surface-exposure dating on rock boulder surfaces located along the central flow line of the rock glacier, targeting different longitudinal positions from the headwall to the rock glacier terminus. The remote sensing analysis demonstrates that between 1960 and 2018 the two lower units of the rock glacier were motionless, the transitional unit presented an integrated surface velocity of 0.03±0.02 m a−1, and the two upper active units above 2600 m a.s.l. showed a velocity between 0.14±0.08 and 0.15±0.05 m a−1. Our results show 10Be surface-exposure ages ranging from 13.10±0.51 to 1.88±0.14 ka. The spatial distribution of dated rock glacier boulders reveals a first-order inverse correlation between 10Be surface-exposure age and elevation and a positive correlation with horizontal distance to the headwall. These observations support the hypothesis of rock boulders falling from the headwall and remaining on the glacier surface as they are transported down valley, and they may therefore be used to estimate rock glacier surface velocity over geological timescales. Our results also suggest that the rock glacier is characterized by two major phases of activity. The first phase, starting around 12 ka, displays a 10Be age gradient with a rock glacier surface velocity of about 0.45 m a−1, following a quiescent period between ca. 6.2 and 3.4 ka before the emplacement of the present-day upper two active units. Climatic conditions have favored an integrated rock glacier motion of around 0.18 m a−1 between 3.4 ka and present day. These results allow us to quantify back-wearing rates of the headwall of between 1.0 and 2.5 mm a−1, higher than catchment-integrated denudation rates estimated over millennial timescales. This suggests that the rock glacier system promotes the maintenance of high rock wall erosion by acting as debris conveyor and allowing freshly exposed bedrock surfaces to be affected by erosion processes.

International audience; Fluvial incision is one of the major erosive processes acting at Earth's surface and is highly sensitive to tectonic, isostatic and climatic variations. The aim of this study is to distinguish between the short-term climatic fluctuations versus the long-term tectonic forcing contribution to Late-Quaternary fluvial incision, to better understand its timing and driving mechanism(s). To achieve this goal, we measured in situ-produced 36Cl concentrations along several river-polished gorge walls in Jurassic limestones of the Southwestern Alps. We then compared our dating results to previously-dated river gorges from nearby catchments. This allows us to highlight three trends of distinct incision dynamics, and to discuss their relationships with climate and tectonics. Trend 1 shows the direct impact of a paraglacial crisis in the rivers directly connected to glaciated areas. Trend 2 suggests an incision wave propagating along the non-glaciated tributaries following enhanced incision in the main streams. Trend 3 displays steady and low incision rates in gorges disconnected from any fluvial response to glacier retreat. Trend 3 also seems to highlight the potential of resistant lithologies to isolate portions of the river network from post-glacial incision propagation. Our analysis shows that gorges connected to upstream glaciers exhibit a significant response of fluvial incision to climatic fluctuations, evidenced by high-amplitudes incision rate variations hindering the long-term tectonic signal. In contrast, incision rates inferred from disconnected gorges are in agreement with previously-estimated long-term denudation and rock-uplift rates in the area. Based on the latter, we can conclude that Late-Quaternary river incision in the Southwestern Alps is readjusting to both short-term climatic forcing and long-term tectonic forcing.

Assessing the impact of Quaternary glaciation at the Earth's surface implies an understanding of the long-term evolution of alpine landscapes. In particular, it requires simultaneous quantification of the impact of climate variability on past glacier fluctuations and on bedrock erosion. Here we present a new approach for evaluating post-glacial bedrock surface erosion in mountainous environments by combining terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide 10Be (TCN) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) surface exposure dating. Using a numerical approach, we show how it is possible to simultaneously invert bedrock OSL signals and 10Be concentrations into quantitative estimates of post-glacial exposure duration and bedrock surface erosion. By exploiting the fact that OSL and TCN data are integrated over different timescales, this approach can be used to estimate how bedrock erosion rates vary spatially and temporally since glacier retreat in an alpine environment.

Over the past few decades, tectonic geomorphology has been widely implemented to constrain spatial and temporal patterns of fault slip, especially where existing geologic or geodetic data are poor. We apply this practice along the eastern margin of Bull Mountain, Southwest Montana, where 15 transient channels are eroding into the flat, upstream relict landscape in response to an ongoing period of increased base level fall along the Western North Boulder fault. We aim to improve constraints on the spatial and temporal slip rates across the Western North Boulder fault zone by applying channel morphometrics, cosmogenic erosion rates, bedrock characteristics, and calibrated reproductions of the modern river profiles using a 1-dimensional stream power incision model that undergoes a change in the rate of base level fall. We perform over 104 base level fall simulations to explore a wide range of fault slip dynamics and stream power parameters. Our best fit simulations suggest that the Western North Boulder fault started as individual fault segments along the middle to southern regions of Bull Mountain that nucleated around 6.2 to 2.5 Ma, respectively. This was followed by the nucleation of fault segments in the northern region around 1.5 to 0.4 Ma. We recreate the evolution of the Western North Boulder fault to show that through time, these individual segments propagate at the fault tips and link together to span over 40 km, with a maximum slip of 462 m in the central portion of the fault. Fault slip rates range from 0.02 to 0.45 mm/yr along strike and are consistent with estimates for other active faults in the region. We find that the timing of fault initiation coincides well with the migration of the Yellowstone hotspot across the nearby Idaho-Montana border and thus attribute the initiation of extension to the crustal bulge from the migrating hotspot. Overall, we provide the first quantitative constraints on fault initiation and evolution of the Western North Boulder fault, perhaps the farthest north basin in the Northern Basin and Range province that such constraints exist. We show that river profiles are powerful tools for documenting the spatial and temporal patterns of normal fault evolution, especially where other geologic/geodetic methods are limited, proving to be a vital tool for accurate tectonic hazard assessments.

The evolution of the Alpine mountain belt during the Quaternary is strongly controlled by periodic glaciations and deglaciations. The significant erosion during these glacial/interglacial cycles has left very few sedimentary archives to study the surface dynamics within the mountain belt over the last hundreds of thousands of years. Valleys within the periglacial zone are the best candidates to target long-term geological archives in the Alps because they potentially preserve ancient fluvial deposits that have been preserved from glacial abrasion. The Drac River in the French western Alps preserves the alluvial fills of three generations of paleo-valleys, which were filled in response to glacial damming of the river and subsequently re-incised during glacial retreat. Detailed 3D mapping of the paleo-valleys was carried out to constrain their geometry and reconstruct the evolution of the Drac fluvial profile over time. The age of the fills of the three paleo-valleys was constrained by measuring the luminescence signal of feldspars, targeting sandy intervals within the coarse fluvial deposits. Dating these fills allows to quantitatively constrain the alluviation and incision dynamics of the Drac paleo-valleys. The onset of alluviation of the most recent paleo-valley occurred before the Last Glacial Maximum, between 40 ka and 90 ka BP (MIS 3 -5). The fill of the intermediate paleo-valley is dated to the previous cold period at 134±20 ka BP (MIS 6). Finally, the oldest paleo-valley was filled more than 200 ka ago. The filling periods correspond to the global climatic cooling stages and are much longer than the incision phases, which took place during global warm intervals. The pattern of sedimentary filling implies it is controlled by an increase in sediment flux in the context of glacial advance, while the incision phases are due to rapid base-level lowering linked to the retreat of glaciers damming the Drac basin. Complementary luminescence dating is currently carried out on the terraces, at the tops of the fillings, and will lead to a better understanding of the control of glaciations on the dynamics of alluvial deposits in the periglacial zone.

The Baribis-Kendeng Fault System crosscuts the northern part of Java Island (Indonesia). It seems that the fault systems is the continuation westward from the active Flores thrust in the northern offshore of the Lesser Sunda Islands. While the Flores thrust in the east is well documented as an active fault in the back-arc platform (e.g., source of the 2018 Lombok 6.9 Mw earthquake), the nature, timing, and activity of the Baribis-Kendeng Fault Systems, particularly the Baribis Fault Zone (BFZ) in the westernmost part of the system remain elusive. Yet, understanding the geological risk associated with the BFZ is crucial, as it crosscuts densely-populated regions, possibly up to 30 million inhabitants in the megalopolis of Jakarta. Previous studies mostly identified the BFZ by first-order morphotectonic observations, as well as large-scale geodetic and seismotectonic investigations, and assigned historical earthquakes (estimated up to 8.5 Mw in 1780) in northern Java to the BFZ. Ground-truthing the structure and activity of the BFZ from geological arguments is a cornerstone to evaluate associated geohazards.We first focus on the Cikamurang Ridge, nearly at the eastern part of the BFZ, where uplifted Pliocene-Recent sediment sequences outcrop. Morphotectonic data include an 8-m resolution digital elevation model that we used to map fault lineaments and calculate the channel steepness index of the rivers crossing the mapped fault segments. Field data, including paleoseismological trenching at the central part of Cikamurang Ridge and sediment dating (OSL and radiocarbon) provide temporal constraints on the BFZ activity. Subsurface geophysical data include seismic reflection and resistivity imaging provide better image of the fault geometry in the sub-surface.Our results suggest that the BFZ has been active in the Cikamurang Ridge during the late-Pleistocene to Holocene times, with deformed sediment sequences dated between 55 and 7 ka. Eastward, the BFZ crosses the Cisanggarung River where the fault deformed ~13-ka old sediments. Westward of the Cikamurang Ridge, both fault lineament interpretation and channel steepness index indicates that the fault continues from Subang regency to Jatiluhur and reaches the area between Jakarta and Bogor. Even though in the area between Jakarta and Bogor the surficial trace of the BFZ is not as clear as the Cikamurang and Subang, the seismic reflection data reveal the blind fault propagation fold. We conclude that the BFZ has a high seismic hazard that requires a careful risk evaluation along its trace, as it threats the numerous infrastructures of the extremely densely-populated West Java. Comparing to the Flores back-arc thrust, the existence of the BFZ indicate the whole island of Java affected with the back-arc compressive regime as well as the existence of the Kendeng Fault Zone, in the easternmost of the Baribis-Kendeng Fault Systems.

Rock glaciers are one of the most frequent cryospheric landform in mid-latitude mountain ranges. They influence the evolution of alpine environments on short (years to decades) and long (centuries to millennia) time scales. As a visible expression of mountain permafrost [1] as well as an important water reserve in the form of ground ice [2], rock glaciers are seen as increasingly important in the evolution of geomorphology and hydrology of mountain systems in the context of climate change and deglaciation [3, 4]. On longer time scales, rock glaciers transport boulders produced by the erosion of the headwall upstream and downstream and therefore participate in shaping mountain slopes [5]. Despite their importance, the dynamics and origin of rock glaciers are poorly understood.In this study, we propose to address two questions:1) How does the dynamics of rock glaciers change over time?2) What is the origin of rock glaciers and what is their influence on the evolution of alpine environments?These two questions require an evaluation of the surface velocity field of rock glaciers by relating short and long time scales. To solve this problem, we combine complementary methods including remote sensing, geochronology with a mechanical model of rock glacier dynamics. We apply this approach to the rock glacier complex of the Vallon de la Route in the Massif du Combeynot (French alps).In order to reconstruct the displacement field of the rock glacier on modern time scales, we used remote sensing methods (i.e., image correlation and InSAR). Over longer periods (103 to 104 years), we used cosmogenic terrestrial nuclides (TCN) dating. By applying this methodology to boulder surfaces at different positions along the central flow line of the rock glacier, from the headwall to its terminus, we will be able to convert the exposure ages into surface displacement. The use of dynamic modelling of rock glaciers [6] will allow us to relate the surface kinematics to short to long time scales. International audience; Decades of scientific research on the European Alps have helped quantify the vast array of processes that shape the Earth’s surface. Patterns in rock exhumation, surface erosion and topographic changes can be compared to sediment yields preserved in sedimentary basins or collected from modern rivers. Erosion-driven isostatic uplift explains up to ~50% of the modern geodetic rock uplift rates; the remaining uplift reveals the importance of internal processes (tectonics, deep-seated geodynamics) and external processes (glacial rebound, topographic changes). We highlight recent methodological and conceptual developments that have contributed to our present view of the European Alps, and we provide suggestions on how to fill the gaps in our understanding.

We compile detrital 10Be concentrations of Alpine rivers, representing the denudation rates pattern for 375 catchments across the entire European Alps. Using a homogeneized framework, we employ state-of-the-art techniques for inverting in-situ 10Be concentrations into denudation rates. From our compilation, we find that (i) while lithologic properties and precipitation/runoff do influence erosion mechanisms and rates at the scale of individual catchments and in some specific Alpine regions, such controls do not directly stand for the entire Alps, (ii) as also previously suggested, catchment-wide denudation rates across the entire European Alps closely follow first-order Alpine topographic metrics at the scale of individual catchments or selected Alpine sub-regions. However, in addition to previous local-scale studies conducted in the European Alps, our large-scale compilation highlights a functional relationship between catchment-wide denudation and mean catchment slope angle. Catchment-wide denudation positively correlates with mean catchment slope up to a threshold angle (25–30°). Above this threshold, any correlation between catchment-wide denudation and slope as well as other catchment metrics breaks apart. We can reconcile these systematic patterns by proposing a regional erosion model based on diffusive-transport laws for catchments located below the slope threshold angle. In oversteepened catchments situated above-threshold slopes, erosion is stochastic in nature, as glacial carving likely caused a partial decoupling between hillslope and fluvial domains with complex topographic relationships and sediment connectivity patterns. Finally, we identify a first-order positive relationship between modern geodetic rock uplift and catchment-wide denudation for the European Alps. The observed spatial pattern is highly variable and possibly reflects the surface response to deep geodynamic mechanisms prevailing in the different Alpine regions. We conclude that today's topography and geomorphic features of the entire Alps are the result of a millenial-scale geomorphic response to past glacial processes and active rock uplift, highlighting a link between external and internal drivers for mountain erosion. Numerical modeling already demonstrated to be a powerful tool for investigating the role of surface processes, including glaciation, in landscape evolution. Ice model developments from 1-D simulations (Oerlemans, 1984; MacGregor et al., 2000) to more recent 2-/3D models (e.g. Egholm et al., 2011) allow investigating glacier dynamics and landscape erosion over various timescales by also incorporating the effects of rugged topography and feedbacks between erosion by glacial sliding and the extent of glaciation.Precipitation and temperature are primary controls on glacier mass balance, driving basal sliding and erosion in response to changes in both ice thickness and extent. However, still little is known on how erosion patterns behave under temporally- and spatially-varying combinations of these two climatic parameters. Since ice basal sliding and fluctuations of water-pressure peak around the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) (MacGregor et al., 2000; Herman et al., 2011), erosion would be expected to follow similar patterns due to their relationship with abrasion and quarrying. However, modeled glaciers with similar geographical extents may present significant differences in either ice thickness and/or ELA, depending on the simulated climate scenarios (i.e. combinations of precipitation/temperature). This will in turn affect ice dynamics and thus erosion patterns, especially differences between the accumulation and ablation areas.In this study we aim to numerically explore how both ice dynamics and erosion patterns are influenced by specific climatic scenarios (i.e. precipitation and temperature conditions). Towards this, we used the Integrate Second Order Shallow Ice Approximation - iSOSIA (Egholm et al., 2011) model, which uses a positive degree-day (PDD) model for mass balance and a depth-integrated computation for ice flux with irregular Voronoi cell grids, allowing local mesh adjustments in selected topographic areas. In addition, this model is capable to couple ice, water and sediments which permits to explore erosion feedbacks onto ice dynamics.Using a synthetic Alpine landscape, we performed a set of simulations with mass balance scenarios preserving similar ELAs and ice extents between runs. From these simulations, we generated glacial erosion patterns (e.g. steady-state erosion, total erosion integrated over a glacial cycle), testing different erosion laws (abrasion, quarrying) as well as the role of subglacial water and sediment entrainment. From the different scenarios, we also investigated how ice dynamics (i.e. ice flux and thickness) and erosion rates vary spatially and differ between the accumulation/ablation areas. Our ultimate goal is to understand how glacial erosion patterns, combined with classic paleo-glacial reconstructions and paleo-ELA estimates, can be used as proxies for paleoclimate reconstruction. The French Massif Central is a portion of the Variscan belt that exhibits a present-day high topography associated with a potential Cenozoic rejuvenation. Despite other Variscan massifs in Central Europe, such as the Bohemian, Rhenish and Vosges/Black Forest Massifs, show similar topography, the French Massif Central is higher, wider and with evidence of more intense late Cenozoic volcanism. Deep-seated processes controlled by mantle upwelling are generally invoked for the origin of Cenozoic uplift, although the timing and quantification of the relief formation remain unclear. Here we presenta thermochronological study based on new apatite (U-Th)/He and fission-track data that have been integrated with published data (Barbarand et al., 2001; Gautheron et al., 2009) to reconstruct the exhumation history of the eastern margin of the massif. Apatite (U-Th)/He and fission-track data show Cretaceous ages from the high elevation samples and Eocene ages from the lower samples. Although the thermochronological ages do not allow to clearly constrain the onset of Cenozoic exhumation, the regional distribution of the mean track length is essential for the interpretation of the eastern margin evolution: mean track length-elevation relationships show a complex and non-linear trend consisting in a general decrease of MTL from high elevation/old age toward intermediate elevations and then a slight increase for the lowermost and youngest samples. We integrated inverse and forward modelling approach to test different hypothesis of margin evolution. The best fit between observed and predicted data is obtained with a Cretaceous cooling followed by a phase of thermal stability around 40°C and a renewed (lower amplitude) cooling during late Cenozoic. These two cooling events represent two main tectonic phases, the first in the Cretaceous and a minor one in late Cenozoic.The limited amount of erosion coupled with the occurrence of Cretaceous deposits on top of the massif and in the Rhône river valley floor and no evidence for faulting suggest a long-wavelength flexure of the lithosphere, which has produced a margin topography characterized by a broad monocline with a very low gradient. This topography is consistent with a surface growth induced by mantle upwelling.

International audience; The incision history of the Three Rivers (Salween, Mekong, and Yangtze) region in the Southeast Tibetan Plateau has been linked to both tectonic and climatic controls. In this study, we report new apatite (U‐Th)/He and fission‐track thermochronology data from the >6,000‐m‐high Kawagebo massif, which forms the edge of the high plateau on the western flank of the steepened knickzone reach of the middle Mekong River valley. Thermal‐history modeling of a thermochronological age‐elevation profile shows rapid cooling since ~1.5 Ma and suggests a mean Quaternary exhumation rate of >1 km/Myr at the valley bottom. The amount of Quaternary exhumation is too high to be caused by fluvial incision alone and requires additional tectonic uplift. Comparing our data from the western flank of the Mekong River valley with published data from the eastern flank shows differential exhumation across the valley in the late Miocene, with the western flank undergoing more exhumation, but relatively uniform exhumation in the Quaternary. We relate rapid exhumation since the late Miocene on the western flank of the Mekong valley and the high topography of the Kawagebo massif to localized tectonic uplift associated with a restraining (left stepping) overstep between the still‐active right‐lateral Parlung and Zhongdian strike‐slip faults. The pattern of river steepness index across the knickzone also indicates that it results from locally focused uplift. Our results demonstrate the importance of detailed thermochronologic studies in this very active region to constrain the complex multiphase tectonic history before invoking any potential climatic forcing of river incision.

Located in the foreland domain of the Alpine and Pyrenean mountain belts, the French Massif Central presents enigmatic topographic features—reaching elevations of ∼1700 m above sea level and ∼1000 m of relief—that did not originate from Alpine compressional nor from extensional tectonics. Similar to other Variscan domains in Europe, such as the Bohemian, Rhenish, and Vosges/Black Forest Massifs, a Cenozoic uplift has been postulated, although its timing and quantification remain largely unconstrained. With respect to the other Variscan Massifs, the French Massif Central is wider and higher and shows a more intense late Cenozoic volcanism, suggesting that deep-seated processes have been more intense. In this study, apatite fission-track and (U-Th)/He thermochronometry were applied to investigate the long-term topographic evolution of the Massif Central. Our new thermochronological data come from the eastern flank of the massif, where sampling profiles ran from the high-elevation region down to the Rhône River valley floor with a total elevation profile of 1200 m. Age-elevation relationships, mean track-length distributions, and thermal modeling indicate a two-step cooling history: (1) a first exhumation event, already detected through previously published thermochronology data, with an onset time during the Cretaceous, and (2) a more recent Cenozoic phase that is resolved from our data, with a likely post-Eocene onset. This second erosional event is associated with relief formation and valley incision possibly induced by a long-wavelength domal uplift supported by mantle upwelling.

International audience; Low-temperature chronometers offer potential to gain insights into the temporal evolution of hydrothermal systems. The long-lived fault-bound Grimsel pass hydrothermal system (including a fossil and an active part) in the Central European Alps serves here as a key site to test such an application. Zircon and apatite grains were separated from samples collected along a fault transect. The resulting zircon (U-Th)/He ages are homogenous along the profile at 8-9 Ma and thus record the regional cooling evolution, remaining unaffected by the younger hydrothermal activity. In contrast, the apatite (U-Th)/He ages show three age groups: One Group (1) of ca. 5 Ma inside and outside the hydrothermal zone matches the low-temperature part of the regional cooling trend, while group (2) with ages as young as 1-2 Ma occurs in a central narrow zone associated with hydrothermal activity. One sample (group 3) displays older apparent ages compared to the regional cooling trend. Group (2) apatite samples reveal a different cathodoluminescence texture and trace-element chemistry, which we interpret together with the young age as apatite growth or re-crystallization within the hydrothermal system. Forward 1D modelling of He diffusion indicates that apatite (U-Th)/He ages should always be reset when exposed to hot thermal waters (up to ~140 • C) present over ka timescales or to intermediate temperature waters (~90 • C) over Ma timescales. Combining our measured apatite (U-Th)/He ages with forward modelling results highlight that, besides regional cooling trends, local heat anomalies within hydrothermal zones are very variable in space and time. Combined trace-element geochemistry and (U-Th)/He dating shows local occurrence of newly-formed apatites crystals, which are best described as geochronometers rather than thermochronometers. Such information is important to explore the longevity of hydrothermal systems and associated spatial distributions of heat anomalies.

Since the Last Glacial Maximum, ∼20 k.y. ago, Alpine glaciers have retreated and thinned. This transition exposed bare bedrock surfaces that could then be eroded by a combination of debuttressing or local frost cracking and weathering. Quantification of the respective contributions of these processes is necessary to understand the links between long-term climate and erosion in mountains. Here, we quantified the erosion histories of postglacial exposed bedrock in glacial valleys. Combining optically stimulated luminescence and terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) surface exposure dating, we estimated the erosion rate of bedrock surfaces at time scales from 101 to 104 yr. Bedrock surfaces sampled from the flanks of the Mer de Glace (Mont Blanc massif, European Alps) revealed erosion rates that vary from 3.5 ± 1.2 ⋅ 10−3 mm/yr to 4.3 ± 0.6 mm/yr over ∼500 m of elevation, with a negative correlation between erosion rate and elevation. The observed spatial variation in erosion rates, and their high values, reflect morphometric (elevation and surface slope) and climatic (temperature and snow cover) controls. Furthermore, the derived erosion rates can be used to correct the timing of deglaciation based on TCN data, potentially suggesting very rapid ice thinning during the Gschnitz stadial.

Assessing the impact of Quaternary glaciation at the Earth’s surface implies understanding of the long-term evolution of alpine landscapes. In particular, it requires simultaneous quantification of the impact of climate variability on past glacier fluctuations and on bedrock erosion. Here we present a new approach for evaluating post-glacial bedrock surface erosion in mountainous environments by combining in-situ cosmogenic 10Be (TCN) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) surface exposure dating. Using a numerical approach, we show how it is possible to simultaneously invert bedrock OSL signals and 10Be concentrations into quantitative estimates of post-glacial exposure duration and bedrock surface erosion. By exploiting the fact that OSL and TCN data are integrated over different timescales, this approach can be used to estimate how bedrock erosion rates vary spatially and temporally since glacier retreat in an alpine environment.

Recent measurements of surface vertical displacements of the European Alps show a correlation between vertical velocities and topographic features, with widespread uplift at rates of up to ~2–2.5 mm/a in the North-Western and Central Alps, and ~1 mm/a across a continuous region from the Eastern to the South-Western Alps. Such a rock uplift rate pattern is at odds with the horizontal velocity field, characterized by shortening and crustal thickening in the Eastern Alps and very limited deformation in the Central and Western Alps. Proposed mechanisms of rock uplift rate include isostatic response to the last deglaciation, long-term erosion, detachment of the Western Alpine slab, as well as lithospheric and surface deflection due to mantle convection. Here, we assess previous work and present new estimates of the contributions from these mechanisms. Given the large range of model estimates, the isostatic adjustment to deglaciation and erosion are sufficient to explain the full observed rate of uplift in the Eastern Alps, which, if correct, would preclude a contribution from horizontal shortening and crustal thickening. Alternatively, uplift is a partitioned response to a range of mechanisms. In the Central and Western Alps, the lithospheric adjustment to deglaciation and erosion likely accounts for roughly half of the rock uplift rate, which points to a noticeable contribution by mantle-related processes such as detachment of the European slab and/or asthenospheric upwelling. While it is difficult to independently constrain the patterns and magnitude of mantle contributions to ongoing Alpine vertical displacements at present, future data should provide additional insights. Regardless, interacting tectonic and surface mass redistribution processes, rather than an individual forcing, best explain ongoing Alpine elevation changes.

Trapped-charge dating methods including luminescence and electron spin resonance dating have high potential as low temperature ( 200 °C Ma− 1), or elevated-temperature underground settings (> 30 °C). Despite this limitation, trapped-charge thermochronometry comprises a diverse suite of versatile methods, and we explore potential future applications and research directions.

Pedogenic carbonate nodules have been observed in the Far North region of Cameroon. They have been interpreted as Vertisol relic components inherited from the African Humid Period (AHP), however their processes of formation remain poorly constrained. Here we explore the possibility of targeting the minerals trapped within such nodules, which represent a residual soil fraction, to date the deposition time of the soil parent material using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). As the trapped minerals have a complex history, related to pedogenesis and sedimentary processes since their deposition, it was necessary to identify a suitable mineral population. To achieve this, a nodule collected at the surface was investigated in order to compare the OSL signals from feldspar minerals from within its external and internal parts. The resultant luminescence data were then compared with minerals trapped in a buried nodule, with the scatter in OSL signals between the different populations indicating potential partial bleaching of grains and/or pedoturbation processes. Our results show that the minerals from the internal part of the nodule are appropriate for OSL dating. Furthermore, the environmental dose rate has changed through time following carbonate precipitation and the radionuclide decay series may be in disequilibrium. Because of its solubility, the 238U-series is particularly affected, and when a complete absence of 234U daughters is assumed, our calculations show a maximum and significant decrease of 20% in the environmental dose rate compared to secular equilibrium. Finally, changing the time of carbonate nodule precipitation results in a maximum OSL age range of 12 ka (from 15 to 27 ka) for the deposition of the soil parent material. Despite this relatively high uncertainty, these ages suggest that the deposition occurred before the AHP. Consequently, if their formation time is well constrained from independent methods, the pedogenic carbonate nodules can be exploited as valuable time archives, providing temporal information on soil parent material deposition and thus a maximum age for the onset of pedogenesis.

International audience; Overdeepenings (ODs) are erosional features that have been excavated below the regional sea/fluvial base level to produce closed topographic basins. Accessing bedrock topography and OD volume is often challenging. Hence, despite constituting major landscape features and being widespread in (paleo-) glaciated regions, ODs have been overlooked and the subglacial processes involved in their evolution have remained debated. In the Swiss Alpine foreland and valleys, ODs are commonly found filled with water or large volumes of sediment. Using a GIS-Matlab approach based on topographic datasets and bedrock contour-curves, we mapped the spatial distribution of ODs in Switzerland and adjacent areas in the ice-free Alpine areas. The majority of the mapped ODs occurs in very-low bedrock erosional resistance , where ODs are larger, wider and shallower than in medium to high bedrock erosional resistance domains, evidencing a strong lithological control on OD geometry. Longitudinal asymmetry and hyp-sometric integral suggest a dominance of quarrying during OD evolution and, for selected glacial catchments, headward erosion propagation or high sediment evacuation efficiency. OD surface data (surface and length) can be tentatively used for extracting OD subsurface metrics (depths, nested valleys and first-order volume estimates). Our data seem to indicate that ODs may initiate as multiple small nested valleys and progress to a single and connected depression. Transversal cross-sections also suggest a negative feedback between the erosion potential for deep carving and the presence of low-resistance bedrock, where subglacial meltwater infiltration could have played a key role in OD evolution. Although insightful relationships have been evidenced for ODs in the Swiss Alps and foreland, we have also observed a high spatial variability in key OD metrics such as surface area and depth. This results in general (first-order) interpretations at regional scale, but currently prevent to quantitatively constrain physical subglacial processes at their origin. Comparisons with existing OD datasets under present-day ice (Greenland, Antarctica and modern Swiss glaciers) place our results in a broader context and allow a step forward in our understanding of the complex patterns and mechanisms of (sub-)glacial erosion and resulting landforms.

Climate and environmental changes since the Last Glacial Maximum in the tropical zone of West Africa are usually inferred from marine and continental records. In this study, the potential of carbonate pedo-sedimentary geosystems, i.e. Vertisol relics, to record paleoenvironmental changes in the southwestern part of Chad Basin are investigated. A multi-dating approach was applied on different pedogenic organo-mineral constituents. Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating was performed on the soil K-rich feldspars and was combined with radiocarbon dating on both the inorganic (C-14(inorg)) and organic carbon (C-14(org)) soil fractions. Three main pedo-sedimentary processes were assessed over the last 20 ka BP: 1) the soil parent material deposition, from 18 ka to 12 ka BP (OSL), 2) the soil organic matter integration, from 11 cal ka to 8 cal ka BP (C-14(org)), and 3) the pedogenic carbonate nodule precipitation, from 7 cal ka to 5 cal ka BP (C-14(inorg)). These processes correlate well with the Chad Basin stratigraphy and West African records and are shown to be related to significant changes in the soil water balance responding to the evolution of continental hydrology during the Late Quaternary. The last phase affecting the Vertisol relics is the increase of erosion, which is hypothesized to be due to a decrease of the vegetation cover triggered by (i) the onset of drier conditions, possibly strengthened by (ii) anthropogenic pressure. Archaeological data from Far North Cameroon and northern Nigeria, as well as sedimentation times in Lake Tilla (northeastern Nigeria), were used to test these relationships. The increase of erosion is suggested to possibly occur between c. 3 cal ka and 1 cal ka BP. Finally, satellite images revealed similar geosystems all along the Sudano-Sahelian belt, and initial C-14(inorg) ages of the samples collected in four sites gave similar ages to those reported in this study. Consequently, the carbonate pedo-sedimentary geosystems are valuable continental paleoenvironmental archives and soil water balance proxies of the semiarid tropics of West Africa. The persistence of significant topography in ancient, tectonically inactive orogenic belts remains one of the outstanding questions in geomorphology. In southern Peninsular India, the impressive topographic relief of the Western Ghat Mountains in tectonic quiescence since at least ca. 65 Ma has raised important questions concerning the long-term mechanism of topographic evolution. Quantifying the distribution of erosion in space and time is critical to understanding landscape evolution. Although the long-term erosion rates are reasonably well known, the short-term erosion rates and the relative importance of factors controlling erosion in southern Peninsular India are less well constrained. We present a new suite of catchment-averaged and local erosion rates using in situ produced 10Be concentrations in river sediments and exposed bedrock samples in southern Peninsular India. Catchment-averaged erosion rates vary from 9.6 ± 0.8 m Ma − 1 in the highlands to 114.3 ± 13.8 m Ma − 1 on the escarpment side. Bedrock erosion rates range from 2.4 ± 0.2 m Ma − 1 in the ridge-top to 143.4 ± 25.4 m Ma − 1 in active channel beds of the highlands. Catchment-averaged erosion rates derived from the across-escarpment, westward-draining catchments are significantly higher than those derived from the eastward-draining, over highland catchments. The difference indicates that long-term down-wearing of the highland proceeds at lower rates than in the escarpment zones. Catchment-averaged erosion rates are moderately correlated with mean hillslope angles and local relief whereas they are strongly correlated with catchment-averaged channel steepness index. This suggests that topographic steepness is the major control on the spatial variability of erosion while strong rainfall gradient is of minor importance in this area. 10Be-derived average erosion rates in highlands are consistent with previous long-term erosion rate estimated from thermochronometry. These results collectively point to large-scale steady-state topography, only decaying slowly with time. Steady state likely reflects the balance between erosion and isostatically driven uplift of the southern Peninsular India.

This study investigates the long-term deformation and rock exhumation of the subducting Yakutat microplate corner at the St. Elias syntaxis region with a special focus on the area east and west of Yakutat Bay, where major coseismic surface uplift occurred during a MW 8.2 earthquake in 1899. We use low-temperature thermochronology to quantify the long-term activity of thrust and reverse faults. We present new apatite and zircon (U–Th–Sm)/He ages from 35 bedrock samples collected along profiles crossing major faults that compose a one-sided flower structure at the northern end of the Fairweather Fault. The cooling ages reveal that rapid rock exhumation is accommodated by the eastern Esker Creek Fault and the Yakutat Fault with rates of 2–3 mm/yr and slower rates of

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages can determine a wide range of geological events or processes, such as the timing of sediment deposition, the exposure duration of a rock surface, or the cooling rate of bedrock. The accuracy of OSL dating critically depends on our capability to describe the growth and decay of laboratory-regenerated luminescence signals. Here we review a selection of common models describing the response of infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) of feldspar to constant radiation and temperature as administered in the laboratory. We use this opportunity to introduce a general-order kinetic model that successfully captures the behaviour of different materials and experimental conditions with a minimum of model parameters, and thus appears suitable for future application and validation in natural environments. Finally, we evaluate all the presented models by their ability to accurately describe a recently published feldspar multi-elevated temperature post-IR IRSL (MET-pIRIR) dataset, and highlight each model's strengths and shortfalls.

The present review paper is an attempt to summarize quantitative evidence of Late Cenozoic changes in topographic relief. Different meanings of the word “relief”, as it is commonly used, and detail the metrics used to quantify it. We then specify methodological tools used to quantify relief change (primarily low-temperature thermochronometry and terrestrial cosmogenic nuclides), and analyze published evidence for different regions. Our review first shows that relief changes and rates of changes are more important at mid-, than high- or low-latitudes, and appear to be insensitive to mean precipitation rates. It also show that relief change is positive (relief increases) in most of the reported cases (~ 80%). We subsequently define two functional relationships between relief and erosion, depending on the chosen definition of relief, and propose a conceptual model of landscape memory. We conclude, following others, that erosion rates depend non-linearly on relief evolution, itself being a function of the spatial distribution and rates of erosion. The relief increases documented in this review may be to erosion rate increases during the same timescales. Lastly, we discuss the importance of glacial and periglacial processes on Late Cenozoic relief and erosion rate changes, and stress the importance of frost shattering and glacial erosion at mid- and high-latitudes.

Climate influences the erosion processes acting at the Earth’s surface. However, the effect of cooling during the Late Cenozoic era, including the onset of Pliocene–Pleistocene Northern Hemisphere glaciation (about two to three million years ago), on global erosion rates remains unclear1, 2, 3, 4. The uncertainty arises mainly from a lack of consensus on the use of the sedimentary record as a proxy for erosion3, 4 and the difficulty of isolating the respective contributions of tectonics and climate to erosion5, 6, 7. Here we compile 18,000 bedrock thermochronometric ages from around the world and use a formal inversion procedure8 to estimate temporal and spatial variations in erosion rates. This allows for the quantification of erosion for the source areas that ultimately produce the sediment record on a timescale of millions of years. We find that mountain erosion rates have increased since about six million years ago and most rapidly since two million years ago. The increase of erosion rates is observed at all latitudes, but is most pronounced in glaciated mountain ranges, indicating that glacial processes played an important part. Because mountains represent a considerable fraction of the global production of sediments9, our results imply an increase in sediment flux at a global scale that coincides closely with enhanced cooling during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs10, 11.

The classical equation of closure temperature ( T C ) in thermochronometry ( Dodson, 1973 ), assumed (i) no storage limitation for the accumulating radiogenic product, (ii) a negligible product concentration at the initial temperature of cooling T 0 , and (iii) a negligible product loss at the final (present-day) temperature T P . A subsequent extension ( Ganguly and Tirone, 1999 ) provided a simple correction for systems cooling from an arbitrary T 0 , at which presence of an initial concentration profile may affect final concentrations. Here, we use a combination of analytical and numerical solutions to derive a general expression for the effective closure temperature in (i) systems which cool between arbitrary initial and final temperatures, potentially still suffering from thermal product loss at T P (termed ‘leaky’), and (ii) systems which may contain a physical limit on the maximum amount of product that can be stored (termed ‘saturating’). While all conservative results can be easily reproduced, an extended use of our formulation provides meaningful effective closure temperatures even when the standard calculation schemes fail. Under conventional conditions, our solution reduces to Dodsonʼs formula. Although the solution strictly applies only to systems where 1 / T increases linearly with time, it is nevertheless a useful approximation for a broad range of cooling functions in systems where closure occurs close to the systemʼs initial/final thermal boundary conditions. We clarify the use and the meaning of T C ( T 0 , T P ) by drawing a comparison between (i) a hypothetical application of apatite U–Pb dating ( T C ≈ 450 ° C ) on Venus (mean surface temperature of 450 °C, leaky behaviour), and (ii) the recently introduced thermochronometric application of optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating on Earth (both leaky and saturating behaviour).

However, significant questions regarding Alpine landscape evolution during glaciations still persist. In this study, we focus on the Rhône valley (Swiss Alps), and use a numerical model to estimate patterns and magnitudes of glacial erosion. Comparing modeling results on a reconstructed pre-glacial topography and the present-day landforms, we find that the landscape response to glaciation is more complex than a simple "buzzsaw" mechanism (by which glacial erosion sets the height of mountain ranges) or increase of relief due to localized valley incision. Instead, glacial erosion propagates headward as the landforms evolve from a fluvial to a glacial state, leading to an initial increase of local relief followed by subsequent erosion at high elevations. It has also been proposed that the mid-Pleistocene climatic transition of glacial/interglacial oscillations from periods of 40 kyr (with symmetric shapes) to periods of 100 kyr (with asymmetric shapes) promoted glacial erosion within the Alps. Although this change of climate periodicity may have contributed to enhance glacial erosion, our results suggest that other factors such as an increase in rock uplift and/or progressive climate cooling are required to explain enhanced glacial carving at View the MathML source∼1Ma.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL)-thermochronometry has recently been proposed as a tool capable of resolving cooling histories from the top 1–2 km of the Earth's crust. This is beyond the resolution of most low-temperature thermochronometric systems, and it offers a new opportunity to investigate the interactions between climate, tectonics and surface processes over Quaternary timescales. Here we present a multi-OSL-thermochronometer which exploits the different thermal stabilities of different temperature infra-red stimulated luminescence (IRSL) signals from K- and Na-rich K-feldspar extracts, utilising the established multi-elevated-temperature (MET) measurement protocol ( Li and Li , 2011 . Luminescence dating of K-feldspar from sediments : A protocol without anomalous fading correction . Quaternary Geochronology 6 , 468–479 ). The theoretical aspects of multi-OSL-thermochronometry are discussed, prior to validation with an example from the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, one of the most rapidly exhuming settings on Earth. Our results show that multi-OSL-thermochronometry of feldspar is able to resolve rock cooling histories over timescales ≤0.2 Ma and provides much tighter constraint on late-stage cooling histories than single-system OSL-thermochronometry.

International audience; Some of Earth's greatest relief occurs where glacial processes act on mountain topography1, 2. This dramatic landscape is thought to be an imprint of Pleistocene glaciations3, 4. However, whether the net effect of glacial erosion on mountains is to increase5, 6, 7 or decrease8, 9, 10 relief remains disputed. It has been suggested that in the European Alps, the onset of widespread glaciation since the mid-Pleistocene climate transition11 led to the growth of large, long-lived and strongly erosive alpine glaciers12, 13 that profoundly influenced topography14. Here we use 4He/3He thermochronometry15 and thermal-kinematic models to show that the Rhône Valley in Switzerland deepened by about 1-1.5 km over the past one million years. Our results indicate that while the valley was incised and back-cut, high-altitude areas were preserved from erosion. We find an approximately two-fold increase in both local topographic relief and valley concavity, which occurred around the time of the mid-Pleistocene transition. Our results support the proposed link12, 13, 14 between the onset of efficient glacial erosion in the European Alps and the transition to longer, colder glacial periods at the middle of the Pleistocene epoch.

The study of the neotectonic activity in the Jura Mountains (northwestern most belt of the European Alps) represents a challenge in the application of quantitative geomorphology to extract landscape metrics and discuss potential coupling between tectonic, climatic and lithospheric mechanisms during the evolution of this mountain belt. The Jura Mountains are characterized by a karst calcareous bedrock, slightly affected by Quaternary glaciations, and by moderated uplift rates (

International audience; We assess the importance of thermochronometric data sampling and modeling strategies for correctly estimating mountain belt exhumation. Thermochronological age-elevation profiles have been widely used to infer orogenic exhumation histories; however, recent studies have shown that this sampling strategy may not be the most pertinent for quantifying both denudation and relief history. Here, we investigate the ability of combining different thermochronology data sampling schemes with numerical modeling to better constrain denudation rates and relief changes. We produce synthetic thermochronology datasets for real Alpine topography under a specific exhumation and relief scenario using the thermal-kinematic model Pecube. We then adopt an inverse approach based on the Neighborhood Algorithm to quantitatively assess the resolution of different thermochronology datasets collected following elevation profiles, long transects and valley bottom sampling. We also test the effect of the modeling approach on denudation and relief predictions, in particular the influence of the topographic grid resolution and of potential constraints on the geothermal gradient. Our results show that sampling along a single elevation profile does not allow to quantitatively constrain both denudation and relief histories. Numerical outputs clearly evidence tradeoffs that limit the capacity of simultaneously resolving denudation rates and relief change. Quantitative predictions are only slightly different when combining elevation profiles along different valleys, but are highly improved when using long transects or valley-bottom samples combined with an elevation profile. The resolution with which relief evolution can be predicted may be increased by a factor of 2 by using spatially distributed datasets. Results of thermal parameter inversions suggest that the geothermal gradient may be better estimated using elevation profiles or long-transect sampling rather than using valley bottom samples. Simulations with different model topography resolutions show that degrading the resolution for computational efficiency may result in a loss of quantitative information on denudation rates and relief history. In summary, we highlight that both thermochronological sampling strategies and the choice of thermal parameters or model topography resolution have a significant influence on predicted denudation and relief histories. Ideally, the sampling strategy should be designed using preliminary modeling of expected denudation and relief histories, and a sensitivity study on assumed thermal parameters and model resolution should be performed when modeling the data. Although our modeling is based on a particular case study of relief evolution in the French western Alps, we believe that these inferences have general relevance for thermochronological studies within mountain belts.

International audience; Heat transfer in the crust Low-temperature thermochronology PECUBE is a three-dimensional thermal-kinematic code capable of solving the heat production-diffusionadvection equation under a temporally varying surface boundary condition. It was initially developed to assess the effects of time-varying surface topography (relief) on low-temperature thermochronological datasets. Thermochronometric ages are predicted by tracking the time-temperature histories of rockparticles ending up at the surface and by combining these with various age-prediction models. In the decade since its inception, the PECUBE code has been under continuous development as its use became wider and addressed different tectonic-geomorphic problems. This paper describes several major recent improvements in the code, including its integration with an inverse-modeling package based on the Neighborhood Algorithm, the incorporation of fault-controlled kinematics, several different ways to address topographic and drainage change through time, the ability to predict subsurface (tunnel or borehole) data, prediction of detrital thermochronology data and a method to compare these with observations, and the coupling with landscape-evolution (or surface-process) models. Each new development is described together with one or several applications, so that the reader and potential user can clearly assess and make use of the capabilities of PECUBE. We end with describing some developments that are currently underway or should take place in the foreseeable future.

International audience; Thermochronologic data collected along age-elevation profiles are commonly interpreted as recording temporally variant but spatially constant exhumation rates. However, thermochronologic age-elevation relationships are known to be perturbed by topographic effects and potential changes in relief, which are neglected in the inherently 1-D interpretation commonly applied. Such data thus potentially record both the denudation and relief history of the sampled region but extracting this information is challenging. In a companion paper, we develop a methodology for rigorously interpreting thermochronologic age-elevation profiles in terms of exhumation rates and relief development through time, and to independently quantify the resolution of these constraints. Here we test this approach using a thermochronological dataset consisting of apatite and zircon fission-track and (U-Th)/He data, collected at La Meije Peak in the Pelvoux-Ecrins massif (French Western Alps). Our data and models suggest a three-phase exhumation history in the Pelvoux-Ecrins massif, including a pulse of rapid exhumation at ˜ 6-5.5 Ma, preceded and followed by more moderate rates of denudation in the order of 0.3-0.4 km Myr‑ 1. This rapid exhumation event appears to occur coevally in other external crystalline massifs in the Alps but is not detected by qualitative inspection of the age-elevation relationships. Both our synthetic results and inversion of the La Meije data strongly suggest that apatite fission-track age-elevation relationships alone cannot resolve both denudation and relief histories independently and that multiple thermochronometers are required. Combining apatite fission-track and (U-Th)/He ages and, particularly, including fission-track-length data greatly improves the resolution of the inferred exhumation histories. Although denudation rates through time and the timing of rate changes are generally well resolved, our data have insufficient resolution to satisfactorily constrain the relief history. Synthetic results reported in the companion paper suggest that the reason for this limitation is that relief increase through valley carving has been insufficient with respect to the regional denudation rates to be unambiguously extracted from the data.

Bedrock gorges incising glacial hanging valleys potentially allow measurements of fluvial bedrock incision in mountainous relief. Using digital elevation models, topographic maps, and field reconnaissance, we identified and characterized 30 tributary hanging valleys incised by gorges near their confluence with trunk streams in the Romanche watershed, French Western Alps. Longitudinal profiles of these tributaries are all convex and have abrupt knickpoints at the upper limit of oversteepened gorge reaches. We reconstructed initial glacial profiles from glacially polished bedrock knobs surrounding the gorges in order to quantify the amount of fluvial incision and knickpoint retreat. From morphometric analyses, we find that mean channel gradients and widths, as well as knickpoint retreat rates, display a drainage area dependence modulated by bedrock lithology. However, there appears to be no relation between horizontal retreat and vertical downwearing of knickpoints. Assuming a postglacial origin of these gorges, our results imply high postglacial fluvial incision (0.5-15 mm yr−1) and knickpoint retreat (1-200 mm yr−1) rates that are, however, consistent with previous estimates. Numerical modeling was used to test the capacity of different fluvial incision models to predict the inferred evolution of the gorges. Results from simple end‐member models suggest transport‐limited behavior of the bedrock gorges. A more sophisticated model including dynamic width adjustment and sediment‐dependent incision rates predicts present‐day channel geometry only if a significant supply of sediment from the gorge sidewalls (∼10 mm yr−1) is triggered by gorge deepening, combined with pronounced inhibition of bedrock incision by sediment transport and deposition.
