Search

Finding and characterising the first galaxies that illuminated the early Universe at cosmic dawn is pivotal to understand the physical conditions and the processes that led to the formation of the first stars. In the first few months of operations, imaging from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) have been used to identify tens of candidates of galaxies at redshift (z) greater than 10, less than 450 million years after the Big Bang. However, none of these candidates has yet been confirmed spectroscopically, leaving open the possibility that they are actually low-redshift interlopers. The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope which was launched on Dec. 25, 2021. We present an overview of the as-run NIRSpec commissioning campaign, with particular emphasis on the sequence of activities that led to the verification of all hardware components of NIRSpec. The NIRSpec instrument on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) brings the first multi-object spectrograph (MOS) into space, enabled by a programmable Micro Shutter Array (MSA) of ~250,000 individual apertures. During the 6-month Commissioning period, the MSA performed admirably, completing ~800 reconfigurations with an average success rate of ~96% for commanding shutters open in science-like patterns. We show that 82.5% of the unvignetted shutter population is usable for science, with electrical short masking now the primary cause of inoperable apertures. In response, we propose a plan to recheck existing shorts during nominal operations, which is expected to reduce the number of affected shutters. We also present a full assessment of the Failed Open and Failed Closed shutter populations, which both show a marginal increase in line with predictions from ground testing. We suggest an amendment to the Failed Closed shutter flagging scheme to improve flexibility for MSA configuration planning. The NIRSpec instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a highly versatile near-infrared spectrograph that can be operated in various observing modes, slit apertures, and spectral resolutions. Obtaining dedicated calibration data for all possible combinations of aperture and disperser is an intractable task. We have therefore developed a procedure to derive a highly realistic model of the instrument's optical geometry across the entire field of view, using calibration data acquired through only a subset of NIRSpec apertures, which nevertheless allows the light paths within the spectrograph to be accurately computed for all apertures and all observing modes. This parametric instrument model thus provides the basis for the extraction of wavelength-calibrated spectra from any NIRSpec exposure, regardless of observing mode or aperture used. Optimizing the NIRSpec instrument model and deriving its final wavelength and astrometric calibration was one of the most crucial elements of the NIRSpec commissioning phase. The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board of the James Webb Space Telescope will be the first multi-object spectrograph in space offering ~250,000 configurable micro-shutters, apart from being equipped with an integral field unit and fixed slits. At its heart, the NIRSpec grating wheel assembly is a cryogenic mechanism equipped with six dispersion gratings, a prism, and a mirror. The finite angular positioning repeatability of the wheel causes small but measurable displacements of the light beam on the focal plane, precluding a static solution to predict the light-path. To address that, two magneto-resistive position sensors are used to measure the tip and tilt displacement of the selected GWA element each time the wheel is rotated. The calibration of these sensors is a crucial component of the model-based approach used for NIRSpec for calibration, spectral extraction, and target placement in the micro-shutters. To achieve its ambitious scientific goals, the Near-Infrared Spectrograph, NIRSpec, on board the Webb Space Telescope, needs to meet very demanding throughput requirements, here quantified in terms of photon-conversion efficiency (PCE). During the calibration activities performed for the instrument commissioning, we have obtained the first in-flight measurements of its PCE and also updated the modeling of the light losses occurring in the NIRSpec slit devices. The measured PCE of NIRSpec fixed-slit and multi-object spectroscopy modes overall meets or exceeds the pre-launch model predictions. The results are more contrasted for the integral-field spectroscopy mode, where the differences with the model can reach -20%, above 4 micron, and exceed +30%, below 2 micron. Additionally, thanks to the high quality of the JWST point-spread function, our slit-losses, at the shorter wavelength, are significantly decreased with respect to the pre-flight modeling. The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one the four focal plane instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) which was launched on December 25, 2021. We present the in-flight status and performance of NIRSpec's detector system as derived from the instrument commissioning data. The instrument features two 2048 x 2048 HAWAII-2RG sensor chip assemblies (SCAs) that are operated at a temperature of about 42.8 K and are read out via a pair of SIDECAR ASICs. NIRSpec supports "Improved Reference Sampling and Subtraction" (IRS2) readout mode that was designed to meet NIRSpec's stringent noise requirements and to reduce 1/f and correlated noise. In addition, NIRSpec features subarrays optimized for bright object time series observations, e.g. for the observation of exoplanet transit around bright host stars. This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. We report on JWST commissioning observations of the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-14 b, obtained using the Bright Object Time Series (BOTS) mode of the NIRSpec instrument with the G395H/F290LP grating/filter combination ($3-5\mu$m). While the data were used primarily to verify that the NIRSpec BOTS mode is working as expected, and to enable it for general scientific use, they yield a precise transmission spectrum which we find is featureless down to the precision level of the instrument, consistent with expectations given HAT-P-14~b's small scale-height and hence expected atmospheric features. The exquisite quality and stability of the \emph{JWST/NIRSpec} transit spectrum -- almost devoid of any systematic effects -- allowed us to obtain median uncertainties of 50-60 ppm in this wavelength range at a resolution of $R=100$ in a single exposure, which is in excellent agreement with pre-flight expectations and close to the (or at the) photon-noise limit for a $J = 9.094$, F-type star like HAT-P-14. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is frequently referred to as the follow-on mission to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The ‘Webb’ will be the biggest space telescope ever built and is expected to enable astounding new science. The observatory comprises a 6.5-m-diameter telescope with a segmented primary mirror and four high-performance optical science instruments. The JWST has mostly been optimized to work in the near- (0.6–5.0 μm) and mid-infrared (5.0–29 μm) wavelength regions. The project is a strong international partnership led by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) with contributions from the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The observatory is currently scheduled for launch in early 2021 from Kourou, French Guyana, by an ESA-provided Ariane 5 rocket. This paper will focus on the European optical contribution to the mission, which mainly consists of two highly advanced optical science instruments: The multi-object near-infrared spectrograph (NIRSpec) and the mid-infrared instrument (MIRI). The opto-mechanical design considerations and the realization of both instruments will be described, and we will conclude with a short JWST project status report and future outlook.

The focal plane of the NIRSpec instrument on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is equipped with two Teledyne H2RG near-IR detectors, state-of-the-art HgCdTe sensors with excellent noise performance. Once JWST is in space, however, the noise level in NIRSpec exposures will be affected by the cosmic ray (CR) fluence at the JWST orbit and our ability to detect CR hits and to mitigate their effect. We have simulated the effect of CRs on NIRSpec detectors by injecting realistic CR events onto dark exposures that were recently acquired during the JWST cryo-vacuum test campaign undertaken at Johnson Space Flight Center. Here we present the method we have implemented to detect the hits in the exposure integration cubes, to reject the affected data points within our ramp-to-slope processing pipeline (the prototype of the NIRSpec official pipeline), and assess the performance of this method for different choices of the algorithm parameters. Using the optimal parameter set to reject CR hits from the data, we estimate that, for an exposure length of 1,000 s, the presence of CRs in space will lead to an increase of typically ~7% in the detector noise level with respect to the on-ground performance, and the corresponding decrease in the limiting sensitivity of the instrument, for the medium and high-spectral resolution modes., Accepted by Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific - 25 pages, 12 figures

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will enable the detection of optical emission lines in galaxies spanning a broad range of luminosities out to redshifts z>10. Measurements of key galaxy properties, such as star formation rate and metallicity, through these observations will provide unique insight into, e.g., the role of feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in regulating galaxy evolution, the co-evolution of AGNs and host galaxies, the physical origin of the 'main sequence' of star-forming galaxies and the contribution by star-forming galaxies to cosmic reionization. We present an original framework to simulate and analyse observations performed with the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board JWST. We use the BEAGLE tool (BayEsian Analysis of GaLaxy sEds) to build a semi-empirical catalogue of galaxy spectra based on photometric spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of dropout galaxies in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). We demonstrate that the resulting catalogue of galaxy spectra satisfies different types of observational constraints on high redshift galaxies, and use it as input to simulate NIRSpec/prism (R~100) observations. We show that a single 'deep' (~100 ks) NIRSpec/prism pointing in the HUDF will enable S/N>3 detections of multiple optical emission lines in ~30 (~60) galaxies at z>6 (z~4-6) down to m_F160W, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) instrument is one of the four scientific instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRSpec can be operated in Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS), Fixed-slit Spectroscopy (FS), and Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) modes; with spectral resolutions from 100 to 2700. Two of these modes, MOS and IFS, share the same detector real estate and are mutually exclusive. Consequently, the micro-shutters used to select targets in MOS mode must all be closed when observing in IFS mode. However, due to the finite contrast of the micro-shutter array (MSA), some amount of light passes through them even when they are commanded closed. This light creates a low, but potentially significant, parasitic signal, which can affect IFS observations. Here, we present the work carried out to study and model this signal. Firstly, we show the results of an analysis to quantify its levels for all NIRSpec spectral bands and resolution powers. We find a level of parasitic signal that is, in general, lower than 10% of the incident, extended IFS signal. We also show how these results were combined with signal-to-noise considerations to help consolidate the observation strategy for the IFS mode and to prepare guidelines for designing observations. In general, we find that this parasitic signal will be less than the statistical noise of a Zodiacal light exposure up to ~40 groups for the NIRSpec grating configurations, and ~10 groups for the prism configuration. In a second part, we report on the results of our work to model and subtract this signal. We describe the model itself, its derivation, and its accuracy as determined by applying it to ground test data.

NIRSpec is the flagship spectrograph for JWST in the 0.6 to 5.3 micron wavelength range. Observation with the Micro- Shutter Assembly (MSA) for multiobject spectroscopy (MOS) will use configurable shutters to form spectral slits and provide the first space-based MOS capabilities. The NIRSpec Micro-shutter Assembly Target Acquisition (MSATA) is an autonomous target acquisition scheme to acquire and position targets accurately with respect to the spectral slits. The method uses measured centroid positions of reference stars with accurately known relative positions across the target field for this process. MSATA performs not only linear offsets, but any required telescope orient (roll) correction to remove blind-pointing alignment error. The MSATA procedure can be used for most NIRSpec science and will be a prerequisite for most NIRSpec MOS mode observations. Astrometry relating the positions of science targets and candidate reference stars with a relative accuracy of 5 - 10 mas will be needed to deliver the best calibration accuracy of science sources. The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRSpec is developed by ESA with AIRBUS Defence & Space as prime contractor. The calibration of its various observing modes is a fundamental step to achieve the mission science goals and provide users with the best quality data from early on in the mission. Extensive testing of NIRSpec on the ground, aided by a detailed model of the instrument, allow us to derive initial corrections for the foreseeable calibrations. The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four science instruments onboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The instrument features a focal plane array (FPA) consisting of two 2048 × 2048 HAWAII-2RG sensor chip assemblies (SCAs) with a cutoff wavelength of approximately 5.3 μm. The detectors are read out via a pair of SIDECAR ASICs. To ensure a stable operating environment and best performance, the FPA is temperature controlled via a dedicated control loop by the NIRSpec focal plane electronics. The targeted in-orbit operating temperature of the NIRSpec FPA is close to 42.8 K. Due to the low background levels that the JWST will provide, most NIRSpec observations of very faint targets will be detector noise limited. Therefore, stringent noise requirements on the detector system were put in place. In order to meet these requirements, NIRSpec offers a dedicated readout mode for its detectors that is called improved reference sampling and subtraction (IRS2 ). In this paper we present the noise performance of the NIRSpec detectors as a function of readout mode and exposure parameters. We find that the NIRSpec detector system meets its stringent noise requirement of 6 electrons total noise in a ∼ 1000 second exposure. We also highlight the types and effects of different kinds of bad pixels that are present in the detectors in small numbers.

JWST/NIRSpec will include the first space-borne multi-object spectrograph, comprising a micro-shutter array (MSA) of a quarter of a million closable apertures that can be individually addressed to select up to a couple of hundred objects within a ~3.2x3.4 arcmin field of view. Although more than ~85% of the unvignetted shutters are fully operational, the high degree of mechanical movement combined with complex circuitry on a small scale, inevitably leads to some non-operable shutters. In this paper we present an overview of the operability assessment concept for the MSA, employed during both ground tests and in flight. We describe the procedures used to detect, mitigate against, and even repair the non-operable shutters, and show the effect upon the multiplexing capability and output data from NIRSpec. We also present the operability trending results from ground tests, and discuss the probable impact on nominal operations after launch.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is frequently referred to as the follow-on mission to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The “Webb”, as it is often called, will be the biggest space telescope ever built and it will lead to astounding scientific breakthroughs. The observatory is currently scheduled for launch in 2020 from Kourou, French Guyana by an ESA provided Ariane 5 rocket. The Observatory houses four scientific instruments. One of them is NIRSpec, the multi-object Near Infrared Spectrograph, built for ESA by Airbus Defence and Space in Germany. After the JWST Optical telescope Element (OTE) integration and testing was completed in early 2016, the Integrated Science Instruments Module (ISIM) was integrated to the OTE in May 2016. The complete system of OTE and ISIM, now called OTIS, then successfully went through an acoustic and vibration test campaign at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). After this, the OTIS system was shipped to the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston, TX, where a final 100+ days lasting cryogenic vacuum test was conducted inside the famous Thermal Chamber A. This paper presents NIRSpec’s hardware status and some preliminary test results from the OTIS test campaign.

This article summarizes a workshop held on March, 2014, on the potential of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to revolutionize our knowledge of the physical properties of exoplanets through transit observations. JWST’s unique combination of high sensitivity and broad wavelength coverage will enable the accurate measurement of transits with high signal-to-noise ratio (S/N). Most importantly, JWST spectroscopy will investigate planetary atmospheres to determine atomic and molecular compositions, to probe vertical and horizontal structure, and to follow dynamical evolution, i.e., exoplanet weather. JWST will sample a diverse population of planets of varying masses and densities in a wide variety of environments characterized by a range of host star masses and metallicities, orbital semi-major axes, and eccentricities. A broad program of exoplanet science could use a substantial fraction of the overall JWST mission.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scheduled for launch in 2018, promises to revolutionize observational astronomy, due to its unprecedented sensitivity at near and mid-infrared wavelengths. Following launch, a ~6 month long commissioning campaign aims to verify the observatory performance. A key element in this campaign is the verification and early calibration of the four JWST science instruments, one of which is the Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec). This paper summarizes the objectives of the NIRSpec commissioning campaign, and outlines the sequence of activities needed to achieve these objectives.

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) which is scheduled for launch in 2018. NIRSpec is developed by the European Space Agency (ESA) with Airbus Defense and Space Germany as prime contractor. The instrument offers seven dispersers covering the wavelength range from 0.6 to 5.3 micron with resolutions from R ∼ 100 to R ∼ 2700. NIRSpec will be capable of obtaining spectra for more than 100 objects simultaneously using an array of micro-shutters. It also features an integral field unit with 3” x 3” field of view and a range of slits for high contrast spectroscopy of individual objects and time series observations of e.g. transiting exoplanets. NIRSpec is in its final flight configuration and underwent cryogenic performance testing at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Winter 2015/16 as part of the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM). We present the current status of the instrument and also provide an update on NIRSpec performances based on results from the ISIM level test campaign.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), with its unprecedented sensitivity, will provide a unique set of tools for the study of transiting exoplanets and their atmospheres. The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four scientific instruments on JWST and offers a high-contrast aperture-spectroscopy mode developed specifically for exoplanet observations. Here we present the NIRSpec Exoplanet Exposure Time Calculator (NEETC) software, an exposure time calculator optimized to evaluate the signal-to-noise ratio and simulate spectra for observations of transiting exoplanets. The NEETC is being developed to help the NIRSpec instrument team, and ultimately future JWST users, to fully investigate NIRSpec’s observation modes and the feasibility of exoplanet observations. We give examples of how the NEETC can be used to prepare observations, and present results highlighting the capabilities and limitations of NIRSpec.

The James Webb Space Telescope will enable a wealth of new scientific investigations in the near- and mid-infrared, with sensitivity and spatial/spectral resolution greatly surpassing its predecessors. In this paper, we focus upon Solar System science facilitated by JWST, discussing the most current information available concerning JWST instrument properties and observing techniques relevant to planetary science. We also present numerous example observing scenarios for a wide variety of Solar System targets to illustrate the potential of JWST science to the Solar System community. This paper updates and supersedes the Solar System white paper published by the JWST Project in 2010 (Lunine et al., 2010). In this paper, we summarize the main capabilities of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) for performing observations of Mars. The distinctive vantage point of JWST at the Sun-Earth Lagrange point (L2) will allow sampling the full observable disk, permitting the study of short-term phenomena, diurnal processes (across the east-west axis), and latitudinal processes between the hemispheres (including seasonal effects) with excellent spatial resolutions (0.''07 at 2 micron). Spectroscopic observations will be achievable in the 0.7-5 micron spectral region with NIRSpec at a maximum resolving power of 2700 and with 8000 in the 1-1.25 micron range. Imaging will be attainable with the Near-Infrared Camera at 4.3 micrometers and with two narrow filters near 2 micron, while the nightside will be accessible with several filters in 0.5 to 2 micron. Such a powerful suite of instruments will be a major asset for the exploration and characterization of Mars. Some science cases include the mapping of the water D/H ratio, investigations of the Martian mesosphere via the characterization of the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium CO2 emission at 4.3 micron, studies of chemical transport via observations of the O2 nightglow at 1.27 micron, high-cadence mapping of the variability dust and water-ice clouds, and sensitive searches for trace species and hydrated features on the Martian surface. In-flight characterization of the instruments may allow for additional science opportunities.

We measured the median dark current and "hot pixel" percentage of λco ~ 5 μm cutoff HgCdTe James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near Infrared Spectrograph HAWAII-2RG (H2RG) detector arrays as functions of temperature. Although these measurements were made in the context of JWST, we believe that they will interest others using H2RGs. We found that the median dark current depended only weakly on temperature throughout the 36.5 K ≤ T ≤ 45 K temperature range (although there were some exceptions). In contrast, the hot pixel percentage depended strongly on temperature, with the percentage of hot pixels approximately doubling for each 6 K temperature increase. Moreover, the data suggest that this trend becomes stronger at warmer temperatures. These new measurements broadly confirm our previous finding that T ~ 38 K is close to optimal for current-generation λco ~ 5 μm cutoff H2RGs, although somewhat warmer (T ≤ 45 K) temperatures may be used if lower pixel operability is acceptable.

We investigated the circumnuclear region of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 5728, using the CFHT 3.6 m OASIS [S II], [O III] & Hβ, spectral images complemented with the IUE spectra. The physical condition of the circumnuclear zone has been derived: the gas density (indicated by [S II]6716/31 ratio) around the C core is generally similar to that around the NW core, i.e., ~ 500 cm -3 . However, there appears to be evidence of a higher density shell in front of the NW core, ~ 10 4 cm -3 at -250 km s -1 . The IUE Si III]1892/C III]1909 ratio implies a possible presence of a broad emission region of gas densities of ~10 10 cm -3 . The SE cone and surrounding area show several prominent features, while the NW cone does not show any particular structure: we identified three prominent blobs in the SE cone and one possible candidate in the NW cone. The outflow activities exist within the relatively large conic opening angle. We discussed the possibility of inflow or outflow activities of blobs found in the circumnuclear region of NGC 5728. The gas around two cores, two cones, and several blobs, is likely to be excited by the AGN hot source(s).

We map narrow-line regions (NLRs) of 11 nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies with the optical integral-field spectrograph OASIS mounted at CFHT. We model emission-line profiles of 5 forbidden-line doublets and 2 Balmer lines, correcting for the underlying stellar absorption by reconstructing stellar spectra with synthetic evolutionary stellar population models. For each of the 11 targets, we present 2D maps of surface brightness in the observed emission lines, diagnostic line intensity ratios, gas kinematics (mean line-of-sight velocity and velocity dispersion), electron density, and interstellar reddening, and we plot spatially resolved spectral-diagnostic diagrams. The stellar data are represented by maps of mean line-of-sight (LOS) velocities and of the relative mass fractions of the young stellar populations. The gas velocity fields in 80% of the sample exhibit twisted S-shaped isovelocity contours, which are signatures of non-circular orbits and indicate non-axisymmetric gravitational potentials, gas motions out of the galactic plane, or possible outflows and inflows. Based on the kinematic measurements, we identified a possible nuclear ring or radial gas flow in NGC 262 (Mrk 348), not reported before. Eight of the eleven observed objects exhibit strongly asymmetric or multi-component emission-line profiles, in most cases confined to an elongated region passing through the galactic centre, perpendicular to the major axis of emission., 40 pages, 25 figures

A research and development activity on image slicer systems for integral field spectroscopy has grown in the last years. It allows the simultaneous observation on the same detector matrix of two-dimensional sky maps and a spectral decomposition of light reducing the observation times. Today, image slicers lead to possible applications on future instrumentation for ground-based and space telescopes, covering a spectral domain ranging from blue to mid-IR wavelengths. Since 2001, the Centre de Recherche Astronomique de Lyon has designed, manufactured, integrated and tested three different prototypes using advanced image slicers.

We present Sauron 2D spectrography of the central 1.5 kpc of the nearby Sey2 galaxy NGC1068, encompassing the well-known NIR inner bar. We have successively disentangled the respective contributions of the ionized gas and stars, thus deriving their 2D distribution and kinematics. The [OIII] and Hbeta emission lines exhibit very different spatial distribution and kinematics, the latter following inner spiral arms with clumps associated with star formation. Strong inwards streaming motions are observed in both the Hbeta and [OIII] kinematics. The stellar kinematics also exhibit clear signatures of a non-axisymmetric tumbling potential, with a twist in both the velocity and h3 fields. We re-examined the long-slit data of Shapiro et al (2003) using pPXF: a strong decoupling of h3 is revealed, and the central decrease in h4 hinted in the Sauron data is confirmed. These data also suggest that NGC1068 is a good candidate for a so-called sigma-drop. We confirm the possible presence of two pattern speeds. We also examine the stellar kinematics of bars formed in N-body+SPH simulations built from axisymmetric initial conditions. These successfully reproduce a number of properties observed in the 2D kinematics of NGC1068, and the long-slit data, showing that the kinematic signature of the NIR bar is imprinted in the stellar kinematics. The remaining differences between the models and the observed properties are mostly due to the exclusion of star formation and the lack of the primary large-scale oval/bar in the simulations. These models suggest that the inner bar could drive a significant amount of gas down to a scale of ~300 pc. In this paper, we present new results from an extensive set of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and ground-based observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 2110. The HST data sets include Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) observations as well as the first high-spatial resolution spectroscopy ([O i], [N ii], Hα and [S ii] lines) of this galaxy obtained using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS). The ground-based data are three-dimensional (x, y, λ) spectrographic observations obtained using the integral field spectrograph OASIS on the Canada–France–Hawaii Telescope, complemented by near-infrared long-slit spectroscopy obtained using NIRSPEC on the Keck–II telescope. The OASIS observations cover regions containing both stellar absorption lines and major optical emission lines. The NIRSPEC observations cover the H and K bands. Combined with archival HST observations, the WFPC2 data provide us with a high-spatial resolution extinction map. The OASIS data allowed bidimensional mapping of the stellar and gaseous kinematics, as well as of the spectral properties of the ionized gas. These results are compared to those obtained in the near-infrared with NIRSPEC/Keck. Last, we used the STIS data to probe the ionized gas kinematics and properties in the inner 4 arcsec along PA = 156° at unprecedented spatial resolution. Our two-dimensional (2D) map of the stellar velocity field and the near-infrared stellar velocity profile are symmetric about the nucleus, confirming the results of previous long-slit observations. The asymmetry of the velocity field of the ionized gas is present at the same level for visible and near-infrared lines, indicating this is not a reddening effect. Multiple Gaussian fitting of the emission-line profile allowed the contributions of the broad and a narrow components to be disentangled. The intensity peak of the [O iii] narrow component is located north of the nucleus, indicating that the bulk of the narrow [O iii] emission comes from the jet-like structure (Mulchaey et al.) and not from the nucleus itself. We suggest that the northern arm is the anomalous one, contrary to what has been claimed earlier. Last, we also show that the elongated region of high gas velocity dispersion located close to the nucleus and discovered by Gonzalez Delgado et al. is intrinsic to the narrow component.

TIGER integral-field spectrography and HST/WFPC2 imaging of the E3 galaxy NGC 2974 are used to derive the kinematics of the stellar and ionized gas components in its central 500 pc. We derive a numerical two-integral distribution function from a MGE mass model using the HQ formalism. The TIGER as well as published long-slit stellar kinematics are well fitted with this self-consistent model, requiring neither the addition of a significant mass contribution from a hidden disc structure, nor the presence of a central dark mass. The data reveal the presence of a striking, highly contrasted, two-arm gaseous spiral structure within a radius of ~200 pc, corresponding to a total mass of 6.8x10^4 Msun of ionized gas. We use a deconvolved TIGER datacube to probe its kinematics at a resolution of about 0.35 arcsec. Strong departures from circular motions are observed, as well as high velocity dispersion values on the inner side of the arms. We interpret the observed gas morphology and kinematics as the signature of streaming gas flows driven by a ~540 pc diameter bar with Ome=700+/-100 km/s/kpc. This hypothesis is strongly supported by the predictions of a density wave model. This model predicts that the bar should lie at about 35 degree from the line of nodes, and implies gas inflow towards the central ~50 pc. The quadrupole pertubation due to this bar is estimated to represent less than 2% of the underlying gravitational potential. Despite its weakness, the inner bar of NGC 2974 may be able to drive some gas within a 10 pc radius. We suggest that the presence of such inner bars might be more common among early-type disk galaxies than is generally thought, and that deep high-resolution emission-line imagery may be the best way to detect such structures., 17 pages, 21 figures. The Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of the four instruments on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scheduled for launch in 2018. NIRSpec has been designed and built by the European Space Agency (ESA) with Airbus Defense and Space Germany as prime contractor. The instrument covers the wavelength range from 0.6 to 5.3 micron and will be able to obtain spectra of more than 100 astronomical objects simultaneously by means of a configurable array of micro-shutters. It also features an integral field unit and a suite of slits for high contrast spectroscopy of individual objects. The extensive ground calibration campaign of NIRSpec was completed in Summer 2013, after which it was delivered to NASA for integration into the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM). We highlight the major results from the instrument level calibration campaign which demonstrated full compliance with all opto-mechanical performance requirements. In addition, we present the current status of the instrument, describe the ongoing preparations for the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) test campaign to begin in June 2014, and briefly discuss plans for the pending exchange of the detector and micro-shutter assemblies following the first ISIM test cycle.

Context: The NIRSpec instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) can be operated in multiobject (MOS), long-slit, and integral field (IFU) mode with spectral resolutions from 100 to 2700. Its MOS mode uses about a quarter of a million individually addressable minislits for object selection, covering a field of view of $\sim$9 $\mathrm{arcmin}^2$. Aims: The pipeline used to extract wavelength-calibrated spectra from NIRSpec detector images relies heavily on a model of NIRSpec optical geometry. We demonstrate how dedicated calibration data from a small subset of NIRSpec modes and apertures can be used to optimize this parametric model to the necessary levels of fidelity. Methods: Following an iterative procedure, the initial fiducial values of the model parameters are manually adjusted and then automatically optimized, so that the model predicted location of the images and spectral lines from the fixed slits, the IFU, and a small subset of the MOS apertures matches their measured location in the main optical planes of the instrument. Results: The NIRSpec parametric model is able to reproduce the spatial and spectral position of the input spectra with high fidelity. The intrinsic accuracy (1-sigma, RMS) of the model, as measured from the extracted calibration spectra, is better than 1/10 of a pixel along the spatial direction and better than 1/20 of a resolution element in the spectral direction for all of the grating-based spectral modes. This is fully consistent with the corresponding allocation in the spatial and spectral calibration budgets of NIRSpec., 17 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

NIRSpec (Near Infrared Spectrograph) is one of the four science instruments of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and its focal plane consists of two HAWAII-2RG sensors operating in the wavelength range 0.6−5.0μm. As part of characterizing NIRSpec, we studied the noise properties of these detectors under dark and illuminated conditions. Under dark conditions, and as already known, 1/f noise in the detector system produces somewhat more noise than can be accounted for by a simple model that includes white read noise and shot noise on integrated charge. More surprisingly, at high flux, we observe significantly lower total noise levels than expected. We show this effect to be due to pixel-to-pixel correlations introduced by signal dependent inter-pixel crosstalk, with an inter-pixel coupling factor, α, that ranges from ~ 0.01 for zero signal to ~ 0.03 close to saturation.

The Centre de Recherche Astrophysique de Lyon (CRAL) has recently developed two instrument simulators for spectrographic instruments. They are based on Fourier optics, and model the whole chain of acquisition, taking into account both optical aberrations and diffraction effects, by propagating a wavefront through the instrument, according to the Fourier optics concept. One simulates the NIRSpec instrument, a near-infrared multi-object spectrograph for the future James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The other one models the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument, a second-generation integral-field spectrograph for the Very Large Telescope (VLT). The two simulators have been developed in different contexts (subcontracted versus developed internally), and for very different instruments (space-based versus ground-based), which strengthen the CRAL experience. This paper describes the lessons learned while developing these simulators: development methods, phasing with the project, points to focus on, getting data, interacting with scientists and users, etc.

We present a detailed analysis of measurements collected during the first ground-based cryogenic calibration campaign of NIRSpec, the Near-Infrared Spectrograph for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). In this paper we concentrate on the performances of the NIRSpec grating wheel, showing that the magneto-resistive position sensors installed on the wheel provide very accurate information on the position of the wheel itself, thereby enabling an efficient acquisition of the science targets and a very accurate extraction and calibration of their spectra.

The Near-Infrared Spectrograph NIRSpec is one of the four instruments of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRSpec will cover the 0.6-5.0 micron range and will be capable of obtaining spectra of more than 100 objects simultaneously in its multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) mode. It also features a set of slits and an aperture for high contrast spectroscopy of individual sources, as well as an integral-field unit (IFU) for 3D spectroscopy. We will first show how these capabilities are linked to the four main JWST scientific themes. We will then give an overview of the NIRpec modes and spectral configurations with an emphasis on the layout of the field of view and of the spectra. Last, we will provide an update on the status of the instrument.

Euclid is a space-borne survey mission developed and operated by ESA. It is designed to understand the origin of the Universe's accelerating expansion. Euclid will use cosmological probes to investigate the nature of dark energy, dark matter and gravity by tracking their observational signatures on the geometry of the Universe and on the history of structure formation. The mission is optimised for the measurement of two independent cosmological probes: weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. The payload consists of a 1.2 m Korsch telescope designed to provide a large field of view. The light is directed to two instruments provided by the Euclid Consortium: a visual imager (VIS) and a near-infrared spectrometer-photometer (NISP). Both instruments cover a large common field of view of 0.54 deg2, to be able to survey at least 15,000 deg2 for a nominal mission of 6 years. An overview of the mission will be presented: the scientific objectives, payload, satellite, and science operations. We report on the status of the Euclid mission with a foreseen launch in 2019.

The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four science instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) scheduled for launch in 2018. NIRSpec is sensitive in the wavelength range from ~0.6 to 5.0 micron and will be capable of obtaining spectra from more than a 100 objects simultaneously by means of a programmable micro shutter array. It will also provide an integral eld unit for 3D spectroscopy and xed slits for high contrast spectroscopy of individual sources and planet transit observations. We present results obtained during the rst cryogenic instrument testing in early 2011, demonstrating the excellent optical performance of the instrument. We also describe the planning of NIRSpecs forthcoming second calibration campaign scheduled for early 2013.

The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four science instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) that is to be launched later this decade. NIRSpec is sensitive in the wavelength range from 0.6 to 5.0 μm and operates at temperatures ≤ 40 K. It offers multi-object, fixed slit, and integral field spectroscopy with seven selectable dispersers. The on-ground spectrophotometric calibration of the instrument is performed by means of continuum and line emission lamps. NIRSpec also contains an internal calibration assembly (CAA) that will provide the wavelength and radiometric calibration in orbit. Due to thermal constraints, the CAA features low power tungsten filament lamps in combination with long-pass and Fabry-Perot-like interference filters, which need to be calibrated at instrument level. We will report on the wavelength calibration of the NIRSpec flight model and the CAA, carried out during the first cryogenic performance testing.

The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) is one of four science instruments on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). NIRSpec offers multi-object, fixed slit, and integral field spectroscopy. There are eight optical elements mounted on the grating wheel assembly (GWA), six gratings, a double-pass prism, and a mirror. The precise knowledge of the position and tilt of these elements is critical for target acquisition and an accurate extraction and calibration of science data. We present the concept of calibrating the position/tilt sensors during the NIRSpec flight model ground calibration campaign, the performance of the sensors and first results concerning the GWA repeatability.

8.4-GHZ radio imaging study of an optically selected sample of early type Seyfert galaxies/ comparison of images taken at two epochs reveals possible variation in the nuclear radio flux density in five of them over a seven year period. It is shown that there is a possible correlation between the presence of nuclear radio variability and the absence of hundred parsec-scale radio emission, analogous with radio-loud AGN. Our results suggest that all Seyferts may exhibit variation in their nuclear radio flux density at 8.4 GHz, but that variability is more easily recognized in compact sources in which emission from the variable nucleus is not diluted by unresolved, constant flux density radio jet emission within the central 50 pc. Taken in combination with other Seyfert properties, these results suggest a paradigm of intermittent periods of quiescence and nuclear outburst across the Seyfert population and demonstrate the importance of investigating the temporal domain at radio wavelengths, which remains completely unexplored for faint radio-quiet AGN. Discovery of intermittent activity and radio flares has important implications for the AGN duty cycles and the origin of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays. New radio facilities, such as the EVLA/VLBA, eMERLIN, LOFAR and eVLBI on the EVN, will revolutionise the study of radio-quiet AGN/ in particular, the combination of increased sensitivity and sampling rate with high-angular resolution and automatic data reduction will open up the transient radio sky and bring major future breakthroughs.

The James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST) Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) incorporates two 5 micron cutoff (lambda(sub co) = 5 microns) 2048x2048 pixel Teledyne HgCdTe HAWAII-2RG sensor chip assemblies. These detector arrays, and the two Teledyne SIDECAR application specific integrated circuits that control them, are operated in space at T approx. 37 K. In this article, we provide a brief introduction to NIRSpec, its detector subsystem (DS), detector readout in the space radiation environment, and present a snapshot of the developmental status of the NIRSpec DS as integration and testing of the engineering test unit begins.

We describe how the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Near-Infrared Spectrograph's (NIRSpec's) detectors will be read out, and present a model of how noise scales with the number of multiple non-destructive reads sampling-up-the-ramp. We believe that this noise model, which is validated using real and simulated test data, is applicable to most astronomical near-infrared instruments. We describe some non-ideal behaviors that have been observed in engineering grade NIRSpec detectors, and demonstrate that they are unlikely to affect NIRSpec sensitivity, operations, or calibration. These include a HAWAII-2RG reset anomaly and random telegraph noise (RTN). Using real test data, we show that the reset anomaly is: (1) very nearly noiseless and (2) can be easily calibrated out. Likewise, we show that large-amplitude RTN affects only a small and fixed population of pixels. It can therefore be tracked using standard pixel operability maps., 55 pages, 10 figures

The Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) will be the James Webb Space Telescope's (JWST's) primary near-infrared spectrograph. NIRSpec is a multi-object spectrograph with fixed-slit and integral field modes. EADS/Astrium is building NIRSpec for the European Space Agency (ESA), with NASA is providing the detector subsystem and programmable multi-aperture mask. In this paper, we summarize recent progress on the detector subsystem including tests demonstrating that JWST's Rockwell HAWAII-2RG sensor chip assemblies have achieved Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL-6). Achieving TRL-6 is an important milestone because TRL-6 is required for flight.
