In recent years, several groups have analyzed or re-analyzed stratigraphic data in order to derive astronomical information on the past evolution of the Earth-Moon system. Depending on the approach and on the type of sediment that is analyzed, the retrieved data are of different nature. For tidal deposits, one may attempt to obtain the number of lunar days in a lunar month, or the number of lunar months per year (e.g. Williams, 2000), or even retrieve the nodal period of the Moon (Walker & Zahnle, 1986). In contrast, for cyclostratigraphic analyses, the derived quantity is the precession frequency of the Earth (e.g. Meyers and Malinverno, 2018). The problem for the geologist is then to derive all the other parameters of the Earth-Moon system from this single initial observation. The AstroGeo tools (www.astrogeo.eu) are designed to help the geologists in this task by providing conversions from one geological proxy to all the remaining parameters of the Earth-Moon system that can be derived from this single observation. These tools developed in the AstroGeo project rely on the physical model recently developed in Farhat et al. (2022). The AstroGeo lunar tool is the first of a series that will be available for the geologists and astronomers community. It allows to input any of the possible observables of the Earth-Moon system (age, semi-major axis, length of the day, precession frequency and angle of obliquity), with some uncertainty, and to derive all the other parameters by interpolating the results of Farhat et al. (2022). At the same time, new data can be plotted versus the nominal solution, together with the already known data that will be kept in an evolving data base. We revisit the scaling properties of growing spheres randomly seeded in d=2,3 and 4 dimensions using a mean-field approach. We model the insertion probability without assuming a priori a functional form for the radius distribution. The functional form of the insertion probability shows an unprecedented agreement with numerical simulations in d=2, 3 and 4 dimensions. We infer from the insertion probability the scaling behavior of the Random Apollonian Packing and its fractal dimensions. We revisit how super-Hubble cosmological fluctuations induce, at any time in the cosmic history, a non-vanishing spatial curvature of the local background metric. The random nature of these fluctuations promotes the curvature density parameter to a stochastic quantity for which we derive novel non-perturbative expressions for its mean, variance, higher moments and full probability distribution. For scale-invariant Gaussian perturbations, such as those favored by cosmological observations, we find that the most probable value for the curvature density parameter $\Omega_\mathrm{K}$ today is $-10^{-9}$, that its mean is $+10^{-9}$, both being overwhelmed by a standard deviation of order $10^{-5}$. We then discuss how these numbers would be affected by the presence of large super-Hubble non-Gaussianities, or, if inflation lasted for a very long time. With the increasing resolution of operational forecasting models, the marginal ice zone (MIZ), the area where waves and sea ice interact, can now be better represented. However, the proper mechanics of wave propagation and attenuation in ice, and especially their influence on sea ice dynamics, still remain poorly understood and constrained in models. Observations have shown exponential wave energy decrease with distance in sea ice, particularly strong at higher frequencies. Some of this energy is transferred to the ice, breaking it into smaller floes and weakening it, as well as exerting a stress on the ice similar to winds and currents. In this article, we present a one-dimensional, fully integrated wave and ice model that has been developed to test different parameterizations of wave–ice interactions. The response of the ice cover to the wind and wave radiative stresses is investigated for a variety of wind, wave and ice conditions at different scales. Results of sensitivity analyses reveal the complex interplay between wave attenuation and rheological parameters and suggest that the compressive strength of the MIZ may be better represented by a Mohr-Coulomb parameterization with a nonlinear dependence on thickness. The next generation of cosmological observations will be sensitive to small deviations from a pure power law in the primordial power spectrum of the curvature perturbations. In the context of slow-roll inflation, these deviations are expected and correspond to the so-called running of the spectral index. Their measurement would bring as much information as the discovery of deviations from scale invariance. However, robust parameter inference requires to marginalize over any possible higher order uncertainties, which have been, up to now, not fully determined. We tackle this issue by deriving the inflationary scalar and tensor slow-roll power spectra at next-to-next-to-next to leading order (N3LO), fully expanded around an observable pivot wavenumber, for all single field inflationary models having minimal and non-minimal kinetic terms. We study the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) produced by freely decaying vortical turbulence in the early Universe. We thoroughly investigate the time correlation of the velocity field, and hence of the anisotropic stresses producing the gravitational waves. With hydrodynamical simulations, we show that the unequal time correlation function (UETC) of the Fourier components of the velocity field is Gaussian in the time difference, as predicted by the "sweeping" decorrelation model. We introduce a decorrelation model that can be extended to wavelengths around the integral scale of the flow. Supplemented with the evolution laws of the kinetic energy and of the integral scale, this provides a new model UETC of the turbulent velocity field consistent with the simulations. We discuss the UETC as a positive definite kernel, and propose to use the Gibbs kernel for the velocity UETC as a natural way to ensure positive definiteness of the SGWB. The SGWB is given by a 4-dimensional integration of the resulting anisotropic stress UETC with the gravitational wave Green's function. We perform this integration using a Monte Carlo algorithm based on importance sampling, and find that the result matches that of the simulations. Furthermore, the SGWB obtained from the numerical integration and from the simulations show close agreement with a model in which the source is constant in time and abruptly turns off after a few eddy turnover times. Based on this assumption, we provide an approximate analytical form for the SGWB spectrum and its scaling with the initial kinetic energy and integral scale. Finally, we use our model and numerical integration algorithm to show that including an initial growth phase for the turbulent flow heavily influences the spectral shape of the SGWB. Weathering of silicate rocks at a planetary surface can draw down CO$_2$ from the atmosphere for eventual burial and long-term storage in the planetary interior. This process is thought to provide an essential negative feedback to the carbonate-silicate cycle (carbon cycle) to maintain clement climates on Earth and potentially similar temperate exoplanets. We implement thermodynamics to determine weathering rates as a function of surface lithology (rock type). These rates provide upper limits that allow estimating the maximum rate of weathering in regulating climate. This modeling shows that the weathering of mineral assemblages in a given rock, rather than individual minerals, is crucial to determine weathering rates at planetary surfaces. By implementing a fluid-transport controlled approach, we further mimic chemical kinetics and thermodynamics to determine weathering rates for three types of rocks inspired by the lithologies of Earth's continental and oceanic crust, and its upper mantle. We find that thermodynamic weathering rates of a continental crust-like lithology are about one to two orders of magnitude lower than those of a lithology characteristic of the oceanic crust. We show that when the CO$_2$ partial pressure decreases or surface temperature increases, thermodynamics rather than kinetics exerts a strong control on weathering. The kinetically- and thermodynamically-limited regimes of weathering depend on lithology, whereas, the supply-limited weathering is independent of lithology. Our results imply that the temperature-sensitivity of thermodynamically-limited silicate weathering may instigate a positive feedback to the carbon cycle, in which the weathering rate decreases as the surface temperature increases., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Planetary Science Journal

Since 2015 the gravitational-wave observations of LIGO and Virgo have transformed our understanding of compact-object binaries. In the years to come, ground-based gravitational-wave observatories such as LIGO, Virgo, and their successors will increase in sensitivity, discovering thousands of stellar-mass binaries. In the 2030s, the space-based LISA will provide gravitational-wave observations of massive black holes binaries. Between the $\sim 10$-$10^3~\mathrm{Hz}$ band of ground-based observatories and the $\sim10^{-4}$-$10^{-1}~\mathrm{Hz}$ band of LISA lies the uncharted decihertz gravitational-wave band. We propose a Decihertz Observatory to study this frequency range, and to complement observations made by other detectors. Decihertz observatories are well suited to observation of intermediate-mass ($\sim10^2$-$10^4 M_\odot$) black holes; they will be able to detect stellar-mass binaries days to years before they merge, providing early warning of nearby binary neutron star mergers and measurements of the eccentricity of binary black holes, and they will enable new tests of general relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics. The existence of a scaling network of current-carrying cosmic strings in our Universe is expected to continuously create loops endowed with a conserved current during the cosmological expansion. These loops radiate gravitational waves and may stabilise into centrifugally supported configurations. We show that this process generates an irreducible population of vortons which has not been considered so far. In particular, we expect vortons to be massively present today even if no loops are created at the time of string formation. We determine their cosmological distribution, and estimate their relic abundance today as a function of both the string tension and the current energy scale. This allows us to rule out new domains of this parameter space. At the same time, given some conditions on the string current, vortons are shown to provide a viable and original dark matter candidate, possibly for all values of the string tension. In the decade of JWST, ELT, TMT, PLATO, ARIEL and other specialized telescopes, observations of carbon dioxide in terrestrial exoplanet atmospheres are possible. The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a tectonically active planet such as Earth is regulated by the carbonate-silicate cycle (long-term carbon cycle). Silicate weathering provides essential negative feedback to maintain temperate climates on Earth over billions of years. In this study, we model the chemistry of rock-water interaction for different silicate rocks and minerals applicable to both continental and seafloor weathering. We find that weathering rates depend mainly on the partial pressure of carbon dioxide, surface temperature and lithology, and other factors are secondary. This approach allows possessing a theoretical method to determine both continental and seafloor weathering rates on temperate exoplanets that depend little on present-day Earth calibrations. Our study gives a strong control over the connection between atmospheric observables and the carbon cycle. The ultimate goal is to provide an abiotic library of geological false positives of biosignatures.

Atmospheric tides can have a strong impact on the rotational dynamics of planets. They are of most importance for terrestrial planets located in the habitable zone of their host star, where their competition with solid tides is likely to drive the body towards non-synchronized rotation states of equilibrium, as observed in the case of Venus. Contrary to other planetary layers, the atmosphere is sensitive to both gravitational and thermal forcings, through a complex dynamical coupling involving the effects of Coriolis acceleration and characteristics of the atmospheric structure. These key physics are usually not taken into account in modelings used to compute the evolution of planetary systems, where tides are described with parametrised prescriptions. In this work, we present a new ab initio modeling of atmospheric tides adapting the theory of the Earth's atmospheric tides (Chapman & Lindzen 1970) to other terrestrial planets. We derive analytic expressions of the tidal torque, as a function of the tidal frequency and parameters characterizing the internal structure (e.g. the Brunt-V��is��l�� frequency, the radiative frequency, the pressure heigh scale). We show that stratification plays a key role, the tidal torque being strong in the case of convective atmospheres (i.e. with a neutral stratification) and weak in case of atmosphere convectively stable. In a second step, the model is used to determine the non-synchronized rotation states of equilibrium of Venus-like planets as functions of the physical parameters of the system. We account for particle emission and gravitational radiation from cosmic string loops to determine their effect on the loop distribution and observational signatures of strings. The effect of particle emission is that the number density of loops no longer scales. This results in a high frequency cutoff on the stochastic gravitational wave background, but we show that the expected cutoff is outside the range of current and planned detectors. Particle emission from string loops also produces a diffuse gamma ray background that is sensitive to the presence of kinks and cusps on the loops. However, both for kinks and cusps, and with mild assumptions about particle physics interactions, current diffuse gamma-ray background observations do not constrain $G\mu$., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Over large timescales, a terrestrial planet may be driven towards spin-orbit synchronous rotation by tidal forces. In this particular configuration, the planet exhibits permanent dayside and nightside, which may induce strong day-night temperature gradients. The nightside temperature depends on the efficiency of the day-night heat redistribution and determines the stability of the atmosphere against collapse. To better constrain the atmospheric stability, climate, and surface conditions of rocky planets located in the habitable zone of their host star, it is thus crucial to understand the complex mechanism of heat redistribution. Building on early works and assuming dry thermodynamics, we developed a hierarchy of analytic models taking into account the coupling between radiative transfer, dayside convection, and large-scale atmospheric circulation in the case of slowly rotating planets. There are two types of these models: a zero-dimensional two-layer approach and a two-column radiative-convective-subsiding-upwelling (RCSU) model. They yield analytical solutions and scaling laws characterising the dependence of the collapse pressure on physical features, which are compared to the results obtained by early works using 3D global climate models (GCMs). The analytical theory captures (i) the dependence of temperatures on atmospheric opacities and scattering in the shortwave and in the longwave, (ii) the behaviour of the collapse pressure observed in GCM simulations at low stellar fluxes that are due to the non-linear dependence of the atmospheric opacity on the longwave optical depth at the planet's surface, (iii) the increase of stability generated by dayside sensible heating, and (iv) the decrease of stability induced by the increase of the planet size., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Numerical simulations and analytical models suggest that infinite cosmic strings produce cosmic string loops of all sizes with a given power-law. Precise estimations of the power-law exponent are still matter of debate while numerical simulations do not incorporate all the radiation and back-reaction effects expected to affect the network at small scales. Previously it has been shown, using a Boltzmann approach, that depending on the steepness of the loop production function and the gravitational back-reaction scale, a so-called Extra Population of Small Loops (EPSL) can be generated in the loop number density. We propose a framework to study the influence of this extra population of small loops on the Stochastic Background of Gravitational Waves (SBGW). We show that this extra population can have a significant signature at frequencies higher than $H_0(\Gamma G\mu)^{-1}$ where $\Gamma$ is of order $50$ and $H_0$ is the Hubble constant. We propose a complete classification of the gravitational wave power spectra expected from cosmic strings into four classes, including the model of Blanco-Pillado, Olum and Shlaer and the model of Lorenz, Ringeval and Sakellariadou. Finally we show that given the uncertainties on the Polchinski-Rocha exponents, two hybrid classes of gravitational wave power spectrum can be considered giving very different predictions for the SBGW.

The gravitational-wave astronomical revolution began in 2015 with LIGO's observation of the coalescence of two stellar-mass black holes. Over the coming decades, ground-based detectors like LIGO will extend their reach, discovering thousands of stellar-mass binaries. In the 2030s, the space-based LISA will enable gravitational-wave observations of the massive black holes in galactic centres. Between LISA and ground-based observatories lies the unexplored decihertz gravitational-wave frequency band. Here, we propose a Decihertz Observatory to cover this band, and complement observations made by other gravitational-wave observatories. The decihertz band is uniquely suited to observation of intermediate-mass ($\sim 10^2$-$10^4 M_\odot$) black holes, which may form the missing link between stellar-mass and massive black holes, offering a unique opportunity to measure their properties. Decihertz observations will be able to detect stellar-mass binaries days to years before they merge and are observed by ground-based detectors, providing early warning of nearby binary neutron star mergers, and enabling measurements of the eccentricity of binary black holes, providing revealing insights into their formation. Observing decihertz gravitational-waves also opens the possibility of testing fundamental physics in a new laboratory, permitting unique tests of general relativity and the Standard Model of particle physics. Numerical simulations of Nambu-Goto cosmic strings in an expanding universe show that the loop distribution relaxes to an universal configuration, the so-called scaling regime, which is of power law shape on large scales. Precise estimations of the power law exponent are, however, still matter of debate while numerical simulations do not incorporate all the radiation and backreaction effects expected to affect the network dynamics at small scales. By using a Boltzmann approach, we show that the steepness of the loop production function with respect to loops size is associated with drastic changes in the cosmological loop distribution. For a scale factor varying as a(t)~t^nu, we find that sub-critical loop production functions, having a Polchinski-Rocha exponent chi < (3nu-1)/2, yield scaling loop distributions which are mostly insensitive to infra-red (IR) and ultra-violet (UV) assumptions about the cosmic string network. For those, cosmological predictions are expected to be relatively robust, in accordance with previous results. On the contrary, critical and super-critical loop production functions, having chi >= (3nu-1)/2, are shown to be IR-physics dependent and this generically prevents the loop distribution to relax towards scaling. In the latter situation, we discuss the additional regularisations needed for convergence and show that, although a scaling regime can still be reached, the shape of the cosmological loop distribution is modified compared to the naive expectation. We calculate the mass distribution of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) produced during metric preheating. After inflation, the oscillations of the inflaton at the bottom of its potential source a parametric resonant instability for small-scale scalar perturbations, that may collapse into black holes. After reviewing in a pedagogical way different techniques that have been developed in the literature to compute mass distributions of PBHs, we focus on the excursion-set approach. We derive a Volterra integral equation that is free of a singularity sometimes encountered, and apply it to the case of metric preheating. We find that if the energy density at which the instability stops, $\rho_\Gamma$, is sufficiently smaller than the one at which inflation ends, $\rho_\mathrm{end}$, namely if $\rho_\Gamma^{1/4}/\rho_\mathrm{end}^{1/4}< 10^{-5}(\rho_\mathrm{end}^{1/4}/10^{16}\mathrm{GeV})^{3/2}$, then PBHs dominate the universe content at the end of the oscillatory phase. This confirms the previous analysis of arXiv:1907.04236 . By properly accounting for the "cloud-in-cloud" mechanism, we find that the mass distribution is more suppressed at low masses than previously thought, and peaks several orders of magnitude above the Hubble mass at the end of inflation. Cosmic string networks offer one of the best prospects for detection of cosmological gravitational waves (GWs). The combined incoherent GW emission of a large number of string loops leads to a stochastic GW background (SGWB), which encodes the properties of the string network. In this paper we analyze the ability of the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) to measure this background, considering leading models of the string networks. We find that LISA will be able to probe cosmic strings with tensions $G\mu \gtrsim \mathcal{O}(10^{-17})$, improving by about $6$ orders of magnitude current pulsar timing arrays (PTA) constraints, and potentially $3$ orders of magnitude with respect to expected constraints from next generation PTA observatories. We include in our analysis possible modifications of the SGWB spectrum due to different hypotheses regarding cosmic history and the underlying physics of the string network. These include possible modifications in the SGWB spectrum due to changes in the number of relativistic degrees of freedom in the early Universe, the presence of a non-standard equation of state before the onset of radiation domination, or changes to the network dynamics due to a string inter-commutation probability less than unity. In the event of a detection, LISA's frequency band is well-positioned to probe such cosmic events. Thermal atmospheric tides have a strong impact on the rotation of terrestrial planets. They can lock these planets into an asynchronous rotation state of equilibrium. We aim at characterizing the dependence of the tidal torque resulting from the semidiurnal thermal tide on the tidal frequency, the planet orbital radius, and the atmospheric surface pressure. The tidal torque is computed from full 3D simulations of the atmospheric climate and mean flows using a generic version of the LMDZ general circulation model (GCM) in the case of a nitrogen-dominated atmosphere. Numerical results are discussed with the help of an updated linear analytical framework. Power scaling laws governing the evolution of the torque with the planet orbital radius and surface pressure are derived. The tidal torque exhibits i) a thermal peak in the vicinity of synchronization, ii) a resonant peak associated with the excitation of the Lamb mode in the high frequency range, and iii) well defined frequency slopes outside these resonances. These features are well explained by our linear theory. Whatever the star-planet distance and surface pressure, the torque frequency spectrum -- when rescaled with the relevant power laws -- always presents the same behaviour. This allows us to provide a single and easily usable empirical formula describing the atmospheric tidal torque over the whole parameter space. With such a formula, the effect of the atmospheric tidal torque can be implemented in evolutionary models of the rotational dynamics of a planet in a computationally efficient, and yet relatively accurate way., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 23 pages, 9 figures

Eccentricity tides generate a torque that can drive an ocean planet towards asynchronous rotation states of equilibrium when enhanced by resonances associated with the oceanic tidal modes. We investigate the impact of eccentricity tides on the rotation of rocky planets hosting a thin uniform ocean and orbiting cool dwarf stars such as TRAPPIST-1, with orbital periods ~1-10 days. Combining the linear theory of oceanic tides in the shallow water approximation with the Andrade model for the solid part of the planet, we develop a global model including the coupling effects of ocean loading, self-attraction, and deformation of the solid regions. We derive from this model analytic solutions for the tidal Love numbers and torque exerted on the planet. These solutions are used with realistic values of parameters provided by advanced models of the internal structure and tidal oscillations of solid bodies to explore the parameter space both analytically and numerically. Our model allows us to fully characterise the frequency-resonant tidal response of the planet, and particularly the features of resonances associated with the oceanic tidal modes (eigenfrequencies, resulting maxima of the tidal torque and Love numbers) as functions of the planet parameters (mass, radius, Andrade parameters, ocean depth and Rayleigh drag frequency). Resonances associated with the oceanic tide decrease the critical eccentricity beyond which asynchronous rotation states distinct from the usual spin-orbit resonances can exist. We provide an estimation and scaling laws for this critical eccentricity, which is found to be lowered by roughly one order of magnitude, switching from ~0.3 to ~0.06 in typical cases and to ~0.01 in extremal ones., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 28 pages, 9 figures

However, 2D models commonly used for the Earth cannot be applied to extrasolar telluric planets hosting potentially deep oceans because they ignore the three-dimensional effects related to the ocean vertical structure. Our goal is to investigate in a consistant way the importance of the contribution of internal gravity waves in the oceanic tidal response and to propose a modeling allowing to treat a wide range of cases from shallow to deep oceans. A 3D ab initio model is developed to study the dynamics of a global planetary ocean. This model takes into account compressibility, stratification and sphericity terms, which are usually ignored in 2D approaches. An analytic solution is computed and used to study the dependence of the tidal response on the tidal frequency and on the ocean depth and stratification. In the 2D asymptotic limit, we recover the frequency-resonant behaviour due to surface inertial-gravity waves identified by early studies. As the ocean depth and Brunt-V\"ais\"al\"a frequency increase, the contribution of internal gravity waves grows in importance and the tidal response become three-dimensional. In the case of deep oceans, the stable stratification induces resonances that can increase the tidal dissipation rate by several orders of magnitude. Thermal tides can torque the atmosphere of hot Jupiters into asynchronous rotation, while these planets are usually assumed to be locked into spin-orbit synchronization with their host star. In this work, our goal is to characterize the tidal response of a rotating hot Jupiter to the tidal semidiurnal thermal forcing of its host star, by identifying the structure of tidal waves responsible for variation of mass distribution, their dependence on the tidal frequency and their ability to generate strong zonal flows. We develop an ab initio global modeling that generalizes the early approach of Arras & Socrates (2010) to rotating and non-adiabatic planets. We derive analytically the torque exerted on the body and the associated timescales of evolution, as well as the equilibrium tidal response of the atmosphere in the zero-frequency limit. Finally, we integrate numerically the equations of thermal tides for three cases including dissipation and rotation step by step. The resonances associated with tidally generated gravito-inertial waves amplify significantly the resulting tidal torque in the range 1-30 days. This torque can drive globally the atmosphere into asynchronous rotation, as its sign depends on the tidal frequency. The resonant behaviour of the tidal response is enhanced by rotation, which couples the forcing to several Hough modes in the general case, while the radiative cooling tends to regularize it and diminish its amplitude., Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 23 pages, 12 figures

The two-scale approximation (hereafter, TSA) to the full Boltzman integral representation of quadruplet wave–wave interactions has recently been presented as a new method to estimate nonlinear transfer rates in wind waves, and has been tested for idealized spectral data, as well as for observed field measurements. TSA has been shown to perform well for wave spectra from field measurements, even for cases with directional energy shearing, compared to the Discrete Interaction Approximation (DIA), which is used in almost all operational wave forecast models. In this study, TSA is implemented in a modern operational wave model, WAVEWATCHIII®, hereafter WW3. Tests include idealized wave spectra based on field measurements, as well as additional tests for fetch-limited wave growth, and waves generated by hurricane Juan. Generally, TSA is shown to work well when its basic assumptions are met, when its first order, broad-scale term represents most of the spectrum, and its second order term is a perturbation-scale residual representing the rest of the spectrum. These conditions are easily met for test cases involving idealized JONSWAP-type spectra and in time-stepping cases when winds are spatially and temporally constant. To some extent, they also appear to be met in more demanding conditions, when storms move through their life cycles, with winds that change speed and direction, and with complex wave spectra, involving swell–windsea interactions, multiple peaks and directional shears.

Thermal atmospheric tides can torque telluric planets away from spin-orbit synchronous rotation, as observed in the case of Venus. They thus participate to determine the possible climates and general circulations of the atmospheres of these planets. In this work, we write the equations governing the dynamics of thermal tides in a local vertically-stratified section of a rotating planetary atmosphere by taking into account the effects of the complete Coriolis acceleration on tidal waves. This allows us to derive analytically the tidal torque and the tidally dissipated energy, which we use to discuss the possible regimes of tidal dissipation and examine the key role played by stratification. In agreement with early studies, we find that the frequency dependence of the thermal atmospheric tidal torque in the vicinity of synchronization can be approximated by a Maxwell model. This behaviour corresponds to weakly stably stratified or convective fluid layers, as observed in ADLM2016a. A strong stable stratification allows gravity waves to propagate, which makes the tidal torque become negligible. The transition is continuous between these two regimes. The traditional approximation appears to be valid in thin atmospheres and in regimes where the rotation frequency is dominated by the forcing or the buoyancy frequencies. Depending on the stability of their atmospheres with respect to convection, observed exoplanets can be tidally driven toward synchronous or asynchronous final rotation rates. Atmospheric tides can strongly affect the rotational dynamics of planets. In the family of Earth-like planets, such as Venus, this physical mechanism coupled with solid tides makes the angular velocity evolve over long timescales and determines the equilibrium configurations of their spin. Contrary to the solid core, the atmosphere is submitted to both tidal gravitational potential and insolation flux coming from the star. The complex response of the gas is intrinsically linked to its physical properties. This dependence has to be characterized and quantified to study the large variety of extrasolar planetary systems. We develop a theoretical global model where radiative losses, which are predominant in slowly rotating atmospheres, are taken into account. We analytically compute the tidal perturbation of pressure, density, temperature and velocity field from which we deduce the expressions of atmospheric Love numbers and tidal torque exerted by the star. The dynamics of atmospheric tides depends on the frequency regime of the tidal perturbation: the thermal regime near synchronization and the dynamical regime characterizing fast-rotating planets. The dependence of the torque on the tidal frequency is quantified for Earth-like and Venus-like exoplanets and is in good agreement with the results given by Global Climate Models (GCM) simulations. Introducing dissipative processes such as radiation regularizes the tidal response of the atmosphere, otherwise it is singular at synchronization. SummaryMonitoring and measuring the behaviour and movement of aquatic animals in the wild is typically challenging, though micro-accelerometer (archival or telemetry) tags now provide the means to remotely identify and quantify behavioural states and rates such as resting, swimming, and migrating, and to estimate activity and energy budgets. Most studies use low frequency (≤32 Hz) accelerometer sampling due to battery and data-archiving constraints. In this study we assessed the effect of sampling frequency (aliasing) on activity detection probability using the great sculpin (Myoxocephalus polyacanthoceaphalus) as a model species. Feeding strikes and escape responses (fast-start activities) and spontaneous movements among 7 different great sculpin were triggered, observed and recorded using a tri-axial accelerometer sampling at 100 Hz and video records. We demonstrate that multiple parameters in the time and probability domains can statistically differentiate between activities with high detection (90%) and identification (80%) probabilities. Detection probability for feeding and escape activities decreased by 50% when sampling at 30 Hz) accelerometer sampling be used in similar lab and field studies. If battery and (or) data storage is limited, we also recommend archiving the events via an on-board algorithm that determines the highest likelihood and subsequent archiving of the various event-classes of interest.

Transit Timing Variations, or TTVs, can be a very efficient way of constraining masses and eccentricities of multi-planet systems. Recent measurements of the TTVs of TRAPPIST-1 led to an estimate of the masses of the planets, enabling an estimate of their densities. A recent TTV analysis using data obtained in the past two years yields a 34% and 13% increase in mass for TRAPPIST-1b and c, respectively. In most studies to date, a Newtonian N-body model is used to fit the masses of the planets, while sometimes general relativity is accounted for. Using the Posidonius N-body code, we show that in the case of the TRAPPIST-1 system, non-Newtonian effects might be also relevant to correctly model the dynamics of the system and the resulting TTVs. In particular, using standard values of the tidal Love number $k_2$ (accounting for the tidal deformation) and the fluid Love number $k_{2f}$ (accounting for the rotational flattening) leads to differences in the TTVs of TRAPPIST-1b and c similar to the differences caused by general relativity. We also show that relaxing the values of tidal Love number $k_2$ and the fluid Love number $k_{2f}$ can lead to TTVs which differ by as much as a few 10~s on a $3-4$-year timescale, which is a potentially observable level. The high values of the Love numbers needed to reach observable levels for the TTVs could be achieved for planets with a liquid ocean, which, if detected, might then be interpreted as a sign that TRAPPIST-1b and TRAPPIST-1c could have a liquid magma ocean. For TRAPPIST-1 and similar systems, the models to fit the TTVs should potentially account for general relativity, for the tidal deformation of the planets, for the rotational deformation of the planets and, to a lesser extent, for the rotational deformation of the star, which would add up to 7x2+1 = 15 additional free parameters in the case of TRAPPIST-1., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. The competition between the torques induced by solid and thermal tides drives the rotational dynamics of Venus-like planets and super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of low-mass stars. The tidal responses of the atmosphere and telluric core are related to their respective physical properties and strongly depend on the tidal frequency. The resulting torque determines the possible equilibrium states of the planet's spin. We compute here an analytic expression for the total tidal torque exerted on a Venus-like planet. This expression is used to characterize the equilibrium rotation of the body. Close to the star, the solid tide dominates. Far from it, the thermal tide drives the rotational dynamics of the planet. The transition regime corresponds to the habitable zone, where prograde and retrograde equilibrium states appear. We demonstrate the strong impact of the atmospheric properties and of the rheology of the solid part on the rotational dynamics of Venus-like planets, highlighting the key role played by dissipative mechanisms in the stability of equilibrium configurations., 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics
