Abstract

At any epoch, particle physics must be open to completely unexpected discoveries, and that is reason enoughto extend the reach of searches for ultra-high energy (UHE) photons. The observation of a population ofphotons with energies𝐸 ≳100 EeVwould for example imply the existence of either a completely new physicalphenomena, or particle acceleration mechanisms heretofore never seen or imagined. But as we outline in thisLetter of Interest, there are also good arguments for super-heavy dark matter (SHDM) in a parameter rangesuch that it could be discovered via its decays to, in particular, UHE photons. Only ultra-high energy cosmic rayobservatories have capabilities to detect UHE photons. We first investigate how current and future observationscan probe and constrain SHDM models in important directions, and then outline some of the scenarios thatmotivate such searches. We also discuss connections between constraints on SHDM and on the parametervalues of cosmological models

3. Diffuse flux of ultra-high energy photons from cosmic-ray interactions in the disk of the Galaxy and implications for the search for decaying super-heavy dark matter

Abstract

An estimate of the expected photon flux above $10^{17}~$eV from the interactions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays with the matter in the Galactic disk is presented. Uncertainties arising from the distribution of the gas in the disk, the absolute level of the cosmic ray flux, and the composition of the cosmic rays are taken into account. Within these uncertainties, the integrated photon flux above $10^{17}~$eV is, averaged out over Galactic latitude less than $5^\circ$, between $\simeq 3.2{\times}10^{-2}~$km$^{-2}~$yr$^{-1}~$sr$^{-1}$ and $\simeq 8.7{\times}10^{-2}~$km$^{-2}~$yr$^{-1}~$sr$^{-1}$. The all-sky average value amounts to $\simeq 1.1{\times}10^{-2}~$km$^{-2}~$yr$^{-1}~$sr$^{-1}$ above $10^{17}~$eV and decreases roughly as $E^{-2}$, making this diffuse flux the dominant one from cosmic-ray interactions for energy thresholds between $10^{17}~$eV and $10^{18}$~eV. Compared to the current sensitivities of detection techniques, a gain between two and three orders of magnitude in exposure is required for a detection below $\simeq 10^{18}$~eV. The implications for searches for photon fluxes from the Galactic center that would be indicative of the decay of super-heavy dark matter particles are discussed, as the photon flux presented in this study can be considered as a floor below which other signals would be overwhelmed., accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Astrophysical neutrinos are excellent probes of astroparticle physics and high-energy physics. With energies far beyond solar, supernovae, atmospheric, and accelerator neutrinos, high-energy and ultra-high-energy neutrinos probe fundamental physics from the TeV scale to the EeV scale and beyond. They are sensitive to physics both within and beyond the Standard Model through their production mechanisms and in their propagation over cosmological distances. They carry unique information about their extreme non-thermal sources by giving insight into regions that are opaque to electromagnetic radiation. This white paper describes the opportunities astrophysical neutrino observations offer for astrophysics and high-energy physics, today and in coming years. Abstract

The construction of the first stage of the Pierre Auger Observatory, designed for research of ultra-high energy cosmic rays, began in 2001 with a prototype system. The Observatory has been collecting data since early 2004 and was completed in 2008. The Observatory is situated at 1400 m above sea level near Malargue, (Mendoza province) in western Argentina, covering a vast plain of 3000 squared km, known as the Pampa Amarillo. The Observatory consists of a hybrid detector, in which there are 1660 water-Cherenkov stations, forming the Surface Detector (SD) and 27 peripheral atmospheric fluorescence telescopes, comprising the Fluorescence Detector (FD).Over time, the Auger Observatory has been enhanced with different R&D prototypes and is recently being to an important upgrade called AugerPrime. In the present contribution, the general operations of the SD and FD will be described. In particular the FD shift procedure - executable locally in Malargue or remotely by teams in control rooms abroad within the Collaboration - and the newly SD shifts (operating since 2019) will be explained. Additionally, the SD and FD maintenance campaigns, as well as the data taking and data handling at a basic level, will be reported

Abstract

The signatures of a photon-induced air shower are a larger atmospheric depth at the shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$) and a lower number of muons with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced background. Hybrid experiments combining a fluorescence detector (FD) and a ground array of particle detectors (SD) can measure $X_\text{max}$, energy ($E$) and the geometry of the shower with high precision. The muonic content is usually estimated through mass-sensitive SD observables that have a complex dependence on the shower geometry, $E$ and $X_\text{max}$. We present here a method to simplify this approach using the paradigm of universality. Air-shower universality models the average contribution of different secondary particles starting from a limited number of parameters such as $E$, $X_\text{max}$, the muonic content and the geometrical configuration of the shower axis relative to the detector. We describe a method to derive a parameter, $R_{\mu}$, directly related to the muonic content using the total signal recorded in individual detectors of a ground array. The approach is tested on full air shower simulations using as a case study the array of water-Cherenkov detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The technique is explored in terms of photon/hadron separation capability over the energy range between 1 and 30 EeV. We show how the combination of $R_{\mu}$ and $X_\text{max}$, in the case of hybrid detection, can lead to a strong hadron/photon separation power even when the number of triggered stations at the ground is limited.
