Spreadsheets are widely used in industries for tabular data analysis, visualization and storage. Users often exchange spreadsheets' semi-structured data to collaborative analyze them. Recently, office suites integrated a software module that enables collaborative authoring of office files, including spreadsheets, to facilitate the sharing process. Typically spreadsheets collaborative authoring applications, like Google Sheets or Excel online, need to delocalize the entire file in public cloud storage servers. This choice is not secure for enterprise use because it exposes shared content to the risk of third party access. Moreover, available platforms usually provide coarse grained spreadsheet file sharing, where collaborators have access to all data stored inside a workbook and to all the spreadsheets' formulas used to manipulate those data. This approach limits users' possibilities to disclose only a small portion of tabular data and integrate data coming from different sources (spreadsheets or software platforms). For these reasons enterprise users prefer to control fine grained confidential data exchange and their updates manually through copy, paste, attach-to-email, extract-from-email operations. However unsupervised data sharing and circulation often leads to errors or, at the very least, to inconsistencies, data losses, and proliferation of multiple copies. We propose a model that gives business users a different level of spreadsheet data sharing control, privacy and management. Our approach enables collaborative analytics of tabular data focusing on fine grained spreadsheet data sharing instead of coarse grained file sharing. This solution works with a platform that implements an end to end encrypted protocol for sensitive data sharing that prevents third party access to confidential content. Data are never shared into public clouds but they are transferred encrypted among the administrative domains of collaborators. In this paper we describe the model and the implemented system that enable our solution. We focus on two enterprise use cases we implemented describing how we deployed our platform to speed up and optimize industry processes that involve spreadsheet usage.

One of the main obstacles to the adoption of Ethernet technology in carrier-grade metropolitan and wide-area networks is the large recovery latency, in case of failure, due to spanning tree reconfiguration. In this paper we present a technique called Bounded Latency Spanning Tree Reconfiguration (BLSTR), which guarantees worst case recovery latency in the case of single faults by adopting a time-bounded bridge port reconfiguration mechanism and by eliminating the bandwidth-consuming station discovery phase that follows reconfiguration. BLSTR does not replace the Rapid and Multiple Spanning Tree reconfiguration protocols, which remain in control of network reconfiguration, whereas it operates in parallel with them.

One of the most important and promising application of the IoT technologies is in the interaction of “mobile” entities, like cars and trucks, with “static” infrastructures in which they are immersed and from which they depend, like motorways, parking sites, city facilities. This type of application is generally named “vehicle-to-infrastructure” communication. This paper describes the research outcomes of the Yacht Single Window (YSW) project that applied this paradigm to a new and different use case for the IoT: enabling the “vessel-to-infrastructure” communication in order to exploit the IoT technologies for the benefits of the leisure boats and yachts security, safety and improved connection.

Environment and climate monitoring is one of the most compelling scenario of application for the Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and methodologies. The chapter introduces and discusses an approach to Environment Sensors Measures data processing which aims at introducing into this domain novel concepts emerged in the technological area of the IoT and smart computing in general: data and resources sharing paradigm, collaborative frameworks for data analytics, end user computing based on spreadsheet tools, rapid prototyping of data "Mashups" and adaptive data processing. The approach has also led to the definition and implementation of a cloud-based prototype platform, which is also presented, currently deployed in the context of a geographic area showing critical environment-related aspects and fragilities.

This paper will showcase the iCore Project approach for instantiating an Internet of Things (IoT) Service Enabling Architecture to support the Connected Vehicles (Transportation in the Smart City).

The SpreadSheet Space is a virtual space to connect spreadsheets. Users can configure permanent connections among spreadsheets as well as between spreadsheets and external data sources to keep their spreadsheets aligned among them and/or synchronized with external data sources. The paper focuses on two ways to exploit the Spreadsheet Space paradigm, namely Collaboration, which refers to spreadsheet alignment, and real-time data, which refers to synchronization with external data sources.In addition, the paper presents the architecture of the software platform which provides the operational and management services needed to support the SpreadSheet Space. The main idea proposed in this paper is to use Excel as a software client for collaboration and real-time data analysis.

One of the most challenging objectives of the Internet of Things (IoT) domain is the identification of interaction paradigms and communication standards to integrate smart objects (SOs), i.e., physical objects able to interact with the network. Such interaction paradigms and communication protocols belong to what can be called the IoT application layer, on which this paper focuses. This paper presents app execution platform (AEP), a platform that supports the design, deployment, execution, and management of IoT applications in the domain of smart home, smart car, and smart city. AEP was designed to coherently fulfill a set of requirements covered only partially or in a fragmented way by other IoT application platforms. AEP focuses on SO virtualization and on composite application (CA) orchestration and supports dynamic object availability.

Cloud Computing is rapidly becoming the key technology to implementat and manage computing centers. This paper describes how Cloud Computing can be effectively used in ships to support reconfigurable and versatile computing facilities. At the moment the application of Cloud Computing in ships is still at its infancy. The paper describes a project aiming at building a ship which incorporates Cloud Computing in its data management system, from engine room control and monitoring to bridge operations, for managing ship to shore communications, and for all the other ship subsystems. The main advantages of the adoption of the Cloud Compuing paradigm in ships are described and discussed.

In this paper, we consider the evolution of telephone networks from time-division multiplexing circuit switching to packet switching and, in particular, to packet switching-based on Internet Protocol (IP-supported telephony). We analyze IP-supported telephony design solutions by proposing a layered reference model in which each layer is associated to a subset of the functions that support telephony. We use the reference model to establish a terminology and a framework for the comparison of the design solutions. We group the design solutions in scenarios and compare them in terms of the reference model proposed. We then focus on IP telephony, in which IP is used in telephone company networks, and on Internet telephony, in which the Internet is used to support telephony. We show that they both can be seen as implementations of the same architecture, which consists of a set of components, associated to functions, and of the interactions among these components. We then consider the issue of voice-data integration and analyze the variety of design solutions that can be adopted to integrate voice and data.

In the last few years different solutions have been proposed for the composition of Web APIs. In this paper we focus on the scalability problems appearing when the software platform in charge of executing Service Compositions (which are defined as Directed Acyclic Graphs, DAGs) is supposed to support huge numbers of concurrent executions. This is the case of viral applications as well as of Cloud Computing scenarios where Service Compositions are deployed and executed in multi-tentant platforms implementing different paradigms such as Business Process as a Service, Mashup as a Service, Service Composition as a Service. The proposed solution exploits the Asynchronous I/O paradigm for the efficient utilization of system resources such as threads and memory.

The paper is aiming at analyzing the possibility for a telecommunication operator to decrease the fixed costs of service delivery, by reducing CapEx (Capital Expenditures) and transforming part of them into OpEx (Operational Expenditures). In particular, the paper analyses the advantages and the risks of moving a service platform on a cloud-based infrastructure, and investigates the impacts of adopting Open Source Software (OSS) solutions for deploying components of a Service Delivery Platform (SDP) and for delivering new services. The proposed approach is exemplified by means of an experimental case study, in which an OSS orchestration engine is deployed on virtual resources dynamically allocated by a cloud infrastructure.

We consider the coordination of smart objects interacting in physical environments. We show that it is possible to re-use the concepts related to the Service Composition paradigm to support the coordination of smart objects such as for example household electrical appliances, sensors, actuators, smartphones, etc. We show that applications involving smart object interaction can be seen as a particular case of event driven composite services. As a consequence a platform supporting smart object interaction can be obtained by including additional components to an event driven service orchestration platform. In this paper we describe a platform for smart object interaction based on a platform for event driven service orchestration enriched with two additional components, namely a Presence Server component, to manage smart object availability, and a Universal Gateway, to support smart object interoperability.

Telecom Operators are investigating new service models in order to respond to the revenue decrease due to the presence of the Over The Top -- OTT providers like Google, Skype, Facebook, etc. On one side, Telecom Operators are migrating their core networks to new architectures like IP Multimedia Subsystem -- IMS in order to decrease both the costs of the infrastructures and the time-to-market of the applications as well as to improve their application portfolio adding new Value Added Services. On the other side, Telecom Operators are also trying to find a way to collaborate in synergy with the ever increasing world of the "Internet of Services" in which Internet providers expose functionalities and contents through Web APIs. In this paper we analyze the main issues that must be addressed when designing a platform for the execution of Mashups over IMS (e.g., Session Management, integration with IMS components like the HSS, etc.) and propose a set of solutions. We show how we used such solutions in a platform for Mashup execution and compare such a platform with a commercial product provided by Ericsson (i.e., the Ericsson Composition Engine - ECE).

This paper presents the Polymorphic Processor Array model of computation and shows that it supports a O(log 2 n ) complexity algorithm for graph component labeling and a O(log 3 n ) complexity algorithm for image component labeling, which, for a distributed memory realistic parallel computer, are optimum results.
