Abstract

This paper presents a benefit-cost analysis of the ongoing, state-level tobacco prevention and control programs in the United States. Using state-level panel data for the years 1991-2007, the study applies several variants of econometric modeling approaches to estimate the state-level tobacco demand. The paper finds a statistically significant evidence of a sustained and steadily increasing long-run impact of the tobacco control program spending on cigarette demand in states. The study also shows that, If individual states follow the Best Practices funding guidelines, potential fixture annual benefits of the tobacco control program can he as high as 14-20 times the cost of program implementation. Abstract

Voluntary exercise seems to increase gonadotropin in male hamsters and counteracts lowered reproductive capability due to a short photoperiod. Exercise did not counteract the reduction of reproductive function due to food restriction. Exercise appears to inhibit the negative feedback of testosterone on gonadotropin secretion. Exercise, therefore, generally improves reproductive function in male hamsters.

Abstract

Study of the function of olfactory bulbs in male golden hamsters reveals that olfactory bulbectomy neutralizes the inhibitory effect of food restriction on the reproductive mechanism. Elimination of olfactory bulbs enables tonic gonadotropin secretion and disrupts food restricting power to initiate testicular deterioration. Olfactory bulbs play a vital role in the metabolic function in golden hamsters.

23. LACK OF A CIRCANNUAL CYCLE OF DAYTIME SERUM PROLACTIN IN MAN AND MONKEY

Abstract

Serum samples were obtained from 7 subjects (6 men and 1 woman) in the morning (09.00 h) and in the afternoon (15.00 h) of each week for a period of 13 months and assayed for prolactin by RIA. In addition, 4 female monkeys were sampled once weekly in the afternoon for approximately two years. The data were analyzed for cyclicity by power spectrum analysis. In both species a serum prolactin circannual cycle was not obvious. In most subjects statstically significant (P<0.05) cycles were observed; however, there was considerable variability among individuals in the duration of the cycle, which ranged between 4 and 50 weeks. A similar result was also observed for the monkey data; here the cycles ranged between 7 and 51 weeks. The physiologic significance of these cycles is unknown at present. It is suggested that although there appears to be no diurnal serum prolactin circannual cycle, this does not rule out the possibility that there may be a nocturnal circannual cycle.
