This paper is devoted to the construction of the renormalized quantum stress energy tensor $\left_{ren}$ for a massive scalar field with arbitrary coupling to the gravitational field of a pointlike global monopole, using the Schwinger-DeWitt approximation, up to second order in the inverse mass $\mu$ of the field. The given stress energy tensor is constructed by functional differentiation with respect to the metric tensor of the one-loop effective action of sufficiently massive scalar field, such that the Compton length of the quantum field is much less than the characteristic radius of the curvature of the background geometry. We study the vacuum polarization of a massive scalar field $\phi$ with arbitrary coupling to gravity in pointlike global monopole spacetime. Using Schwinger-DeWitt proper time formalism, we calculate the vacuum expectation value $<\phi^{2}>$, when the Compton length of the quantum field is much less than the characteristic radius of the curvature of the background geometry, and we can ignore nonlocal contributions. Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for a general curvature coupling parameter, and specified to the more physical cases of minimal and conformal coupling. Comparing the leading term of $<\phi^{2}>$, proportional to the coincident limit of the Hadamard-DeWitt coeficcient $a_{2}$, with higher order terms, that include the coincident limits of coefficients up to $a_{5}$, we conclude that the next to next to next to leading approximation need to be used to give a more precise description of vacuum polarization effects in this structures. We also find the trace of the renormalized stress energy tensor for the quantized field in the leading approximation, using the existing relationship between this magnitude, the trace anomaly and the field fluctuation., Comment: 27 pages, 3 figures

We study the complete time evolution of scalar fields propagating in space-times of higher dimensional Lifshitz Black Holes with dynamical critical exponent $z=2$, obtained from a theory including the most general quadratic curvature corrections to Einstein-Hilbert gravity in $D$ dimensions. We also computed the quasinormal spectrum after performing a numerical integration and solving exactly the Klein-Gordon equation obeyed by the massive scalar field. In this paper we report the results of a detailed investigation of the complete time evolution of massless fermion fields propagating in spacetimes of higher dimensional stringy black hole solutions, obtained from intersecting branes in string/$M$ theory. We write the Dirac equation in $D$-dimensional spacetime in a form suitable to perform a numerical integration of it, and using a Prony fitting of the time domain data, we determine the quasinormal frequencies that characterize the test field evolution at intermediary times. We also present the results obtained for the quasinormal frequencies using a sixth order WKB approximation, that are in perfect agreement with the numerical results. The power law exponents that describe the field relaxation at very late times are also determined, and we show that they depends upon the dimensionality of space-time, and are identical to that associated with the relaxation of boson fields for odd dimensions. The dependance of the frequencies and damping factor of the spinor field with the charges of the stringy black hole are studied., Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures

The aim of the present report is to study massless fermion perturbations outside five-dimensional stringy black holes with U(1) charges. The Dirac equation was numerically solved to obtain the time profiles for the evolving fermion fields, and the quasinormal frequencies at intermediate times are computed by numerical Prony fitting and semianalytical WKB expansion at sixth order. We also computed numerically the late-time power law decay factors, showing that there are in correspondence with previously reported results for the case of boson fields in higher dimensional odd space-times. The dependence of quasinormal frequencies with U(1) compactification charges are studied, and the stability of this class of higher dimensional black holes under fermion perturbations is established., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures

In this paper we study fermion perturbations in four dimensional black holes of string theory, obtained either from a non-extreme configuration of three intersecting five-branes with a boost along the common string or from a non-extreme intersecting system of two two-branes and two five-branes. The Dirac equation for the massless neutrino field, after conformal re-scaling of the metric, is written as a wave equation suitable to study the time evolution of the perturbation. With the aid of Prony fitting of time-domain profile we calculate the complex frequencies that dominate the quasinormal ringing stage, and also determine this quantities by the semi-analytical sixth order WKB method. We also find numerically the decay factor of fermion fields at very late times, and show that the falloff is identical to those appeared for massless fields in other four dimensional black hole spacetimes., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures

We report the results concerning the influence of vacuum polarization due to quantum massive vector, scalar and spinor fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric charged black holes. The vacuum polarization from quantized fields produces a shift in the values of the quasinormal frequencies, and correspondingly the semiclassical system becomes a better oscillator with respect to the classical Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

We consider the time evolution of massless gravitino perturbations in Schwarzschild black holes, and show that as in the case of fields of other values of spin, the evolution comes in three stages, after an initial outburst as a first stage, we observe the damped oscillations characteristic of the quasinormal ringing stage, followed by long time tails. Using the sixth order WKB method and Prony fitting of time domain data we determine the quasinormal frequencies. There is a good correspondence between the results obtained by the above two methods, and we obtain a considerable improvement with respect to the previously obtained third order WKB results. We also show that the response of a black hole depends crucially on the spin class of the perturbing field: the quality factor becomes a decreasing function of the spin for boson perturbations, whereas the opposite situation appears for fermion ones.

We investigate the influence of vacuum polarization of quantum massive fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric black holes. We consider the evolution of a massless scalar field on the spacetime corresponding to a charged semiclassical black hole, consisting of the quantum corrected geometry of a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole dressed by a quantum massive scalar field in the large mass limit. We consider black $p$-brane solutions of the low energy string action, computing scalar perturbations. Using standard methods, we derive the wave equations obeyed by the perturbations and treat them analytically and numerically. We have found that tensorial perturbations obtained via a gauge-invariant formalism leads to the same results as scalar perturbations. No instability has been found. Asymptotically, these solutions typically reduce to a $AdS_{(p+2)}\times S^{(8-p)}$ space, which, in the framework of Maldacena's conjecture, can be regarded as a gravitational dual to a conformal field theory defined in a $(p+1)$-dimensional flat space-time. The results furnish the starting point for investigating iterative solutions of the back-reaction problem related with the quantization of cylindrical scalar field configurations.
