Background: In the management of multi-drug-resistant focal epilepsies, intracranial electrode implantation is used for precise localization of the ictal onset zone. In select patients, subdural grid electrode implantation is utilized. Subdural grid placement traditionally requires large craniotomies to visualize the cortex prior to mapping. However, smaller craniotomies may enable shorter operations and reduced risks. We aimed to compare surgical outcomes between patients undergoing traditional large craniotomies with those undergoing tailored "mini" craniotomies (the "mail-slot" technique) for subdural grid placement., Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 23 patients who underwent subdural electrode implantation for epilepsy monitoring between 2014 and 2020. Patients were categorized into mini-craniotomies (n = 9) and traditional large craniotomies (n = 14) groups. Demographics, operative details, and outcomes were reviewed. Craniotomy size and number of electrodes were determined via post hoc radiographs., Results: Of the 23 patients studied, the mini group had smaller craniotomy sizes (mean: 22.71 cm 2 vs. 65.17 cm 2 , P < 0.001) and higher electrode-to-size ratios (mean: 4.25 vs. 1.71, P < 0.0001). The mini group had slightly fewer total electrodes (mean: 88.67 vs. 107.43, P = 0.047). No significant differences were found in operative duration, blood loss, invasive electroencephalography duration, complications, or Engel scores between the groups. One patient per group required further invasive epilepsy monitoring for localization; all patients underwent therapeutic surgery., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that mini-craniotomies for subdural grid placement in epilepsy monitoring offer significant advantages, including smaller craniotomy sizes and shorter operation durations, without compromising safety or efficacy. The acute and long-term consequences of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) are far reaching. Though it may often be overlooked due to the now expansive field of research dedicated to understanding the consequences of mTBI on the brain, recent work has revealed that substantial changes in the vestibulo-auditory system can also occur due to mTBI. These changes, termed "labyrinthine" or "cochlear concussion," include hearing loss, vertigo, and tinnitus that develop after mTBI in the setting of an intact bony labyrinthine capsule (as detected on imaging). In the review that follows, we focus our discussion on the effects of mTBI on the peripheral structures and pathways of the auditory and vestibular systems. Although the effects of indirect trauma (e.g., noise and blast trauma) have been well-investigated, there exists a profound need to improve our understanding of the effects of direct head injury (such as mTBI) on the auditory and vestibular systems. Our aim is to summarize the current evidentiary foundation upon which labyrinthine and/or cochlear concussion are based to shed light on the ways in which clinicians can refine the existing modalities used to diagnose and treat patients experiencing mTBI as it relates to hearing and balance.

Objective: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an FDA-approved antifibrinolytic that is seeing increased popularity in spine surgery owing to its ability to reduce intraoperative blood loss (IOBL) and allogeneic transfusion requirements. The present study aimed to summarize the current literature on these formulations in the context of short-segment instrumented lumbar fusion including ≥ 1-level posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF)., Methods: The PubMed, Cochrane, and Web of Science databases were queried for all full-text English studies evaluating the use of topical TXA (tTXA), systemic TXA (sTXA), or combined tTXA+sTXA in patients undergoing PLIF. The primary endpoints of interest were operative time, IOBL, and total blood loss (TBL); secondary endpoints included venous thromboembolic complication occurrence, and allogeneic and autologous transfusion requirements. Outcomes were compared using random effects. Comparisons were made between the following treatment groups: sTXA, tTXA, and sTXA+tTXA. Given that sTXA is arguably the standard of care in the literature (i.e., the most common route of administration that to this point has been studied the most), the authors compared sTXA versus tTXA and sTXA versus sTXA+tTXA. Study heterogeneity was assessed with the I2 test, and grouped analysis using the Hedge's g test was performed for measurement of effect size., Results: Forty-five articles were identified, of which 17 met the criteria for inclusion with an aggregate of 1008 patients. TXA regimens included sTXA only, tTXA only, and various combinations of sTXA and tTXA. There were no significant differences in operative time, TBL, or postoperative drainage between the sTXA and tTXA groups or between the sTXA and sTXA+tTXA groups., Conclusions: The present meta-analysis suggested clinical equipoise between isolated sTXA, isolated tTXA, and combinatorial tTXA+sTXA formulations as hemostatic adjuvants/neoadjuvants in short-segment fusion including ≥ 1-level PLIF. Given the theoretically lower venous thromboembolism risk associated with tTXA, additional investigations using large cohorts comparing these two formulations within the posterior fusion population are merited. Although TXA has been shown to be effective, there are insufficient data to support topical or systemic administration as superior within the open PLIF population.

Purpose: The purpose of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of patient-specific rods for adult spinal deformity., Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed through an electronic search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Human studies between 2012 and 2023 were included. Sample size, sagittal vertical axis (SVA), pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis (PI-LL), pelvic tilt (PT), operation time, blood loss, follow-up duration, and complications were recorded for each study when available., Results: Seven studies with a total of 304 adult spinal deformity patients of various etiologies were included. All studies reported SVA, and PT; two studies did not report PI-LL. Four studies reported planned radiographic outcomes. Two found a significant association between preoperative plan and postoperative outcome in all three outcomes. One found a significant association for PI-LL alone. The fourth found no significant associations. SVA improved in six of seven studies, PI-LL improved in all five, and three of seven studies found improved postoperative PT. Significance of these results varied greatly by study., Conclusion: Preliminary evidence suggests potential benefits of PSRs in achieving optimal spino-pelvic parameters in ASD surgery. Nevertheless, conclusions regarding the superiority of PSRs over traditional rods must be judiciously drawn, given the heterogeneity of patients and study methodologies, potential confounding variables, and the absence of robust randomized controlled trials. Future investigations should concentrate on enhancing preoperative planning, standardizing surgical methodologies, isolating specific patient subgroups, and head-to-head comparisons with traditional rods to fully elucidate the impact of PSRs in ASD surgery., (© 2024. Objective: With no cure for Alzheimer disease (AD), current efforts involve therapeutics that prevent further cognitive impairment. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been studied for its potential to mitigate AD symptoms. This systematic review investigates the efficacy of current and previous targets for their ability to slow cognitive decline in treating AD., Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed through a search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Human studies between 1994 and 2023 were included. Sample size, cognitive outcomes, and complications were recorded for each study., Results: Fourteen human studies were included: 7 studies with 6 distinct cohorts (n = 56) targeted the fornix, 6 studies with 3 distinct cohorts (n = 17) targeted the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM), and 1 study (n = 3) investigated DBS of the ventral striatum (VS). The Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale, Mini-Mental State Examination, and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale Sum of Boxes were used as the primary outcomes. In 5 of 6 cohorts where DBS targeted the fornix, cognitive decline was slowed based on the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-Cognitive Subscale or Mini-Mental State Examination scores. In 2 of 3 NBM cohorts, a similar reduction was reported. When DBS targeted the VS, the patients' Clinical Dementia Rating Scale Sum of Boxes scores indicated a slowed decline., Conclusions: This review summarizes current evidence and addresses variability in study designs regarding the therapeutic benefit of DBS of the fornix, NBM, and VS. Because of varying study parameters, varying outcome measures, varying study durations, and limited cohort sizes, definitive conclusions regarding the utility of DBS for AD cannot be made. Physician marriage is a valuable indicator of how vocational factors (e.g. work hours, stressors) impact satisfaction in relationships and physician wellness overall. Previous studies suggest that gender and specialty influence marriage satisfaction for physicians, though these often come from limited, local, cohorts. A cross-sectional survey was designed and distributed to publicly available email addresses representing academic and private practice physician organizations across the United States, receiving 321 responses (253 complete). Responses included data on demographics, medical specialty, age at marriage, stage of training at marriage, number of children, and factors leading to marital satisfaction/distress. A multivariable ordinal logistic regression was conducted to find associations between survey variables and marriage satisfaction. Survey results indicated that 86.5% of physicians have been married (average age at first marriage was 27.8 years old), and the rate of first marriages ending is at least 14.7%. Men had significantly more children than women. Physicians married at least once averaged 1.98 children. "Other" specialty physicians had significantly more children on average than psychiatrists. Marrying before medical school predicted practicing in private practice settings. Job stress, work hours, children, and sex were most frequently sources of marital distress, while strong communication, finances, and children were most frequently sources of marital stability. Sex differences were also found in distressing and stabilizing marital factors: Female physicians were more likely to cite their spouse's work hours and job stress as sources of marital distress. Finally, surgery specialty and Judaism were associated with higher marriage satisfaction, whereas possession of an M.D. degree was associated with lower marriage satisfaction. This study elucidated new perspectives on physician marriage and families based on specialty, practice setting, and stage of training at marriage. Future studies may focus on factors mediating specialty and sex's impact on having children and marriage satisfaction. Objective: We aimed to elucidate associations between geographic location, size, and ranking of medical schools that orthopaedic surgery residents graduate from and the residencies that they match both pre-COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 pandemic by examining the 2017 to 2022 orthopaedic surgery residency cohorts., Methods: Demographics were extracted using Doximity Residency Navigator platform, the 2021 US News and World Report, and program websites. Medical schools were classified as large if they had >613 medical students. Postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) (2021 match) and PGY-2 (2022 match) residents were classified as the COVID-19 cohort. Location was categorized as Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. Chi-square tests, Cohen's H value, and descriptive statistics were used for analysis with statistical significance set at p <0.05., Results: Four thousand two hundred forty-three residents from 160 accredited US orthopaedic residency programs (78.4%) were included. Northeastern applicants were most likely to match in the same region (p <0.01), and southern applicants were most likely to match at their home program (p <0.001). Applicants affected by the COVID-19 pandemic did not differ from their predecessors with regards to matching to the same region (p = 0.637) or home program (p = 0.489). Applicants from public medical schools were more likely to match in the same region and at their home program (p <0.001), whereas those from private medical schools were more likely to match at top-ranked residencies (p <0.001). Students from both top 25- and top 50-ranked medical schools were more likely to match at their home program (p <0.01) and attend top 20-ranked residency programs (p <0.0001)., Conclusion: These results demonstrate significant associations between matched residencies and attended medical schools' geographic location, school type, and ranking. Laparoscopic anterior lumbar interbody fusion (L-ALIF), which employs laparoscopic cameras to facilitate a less invasive approach, originally gained traction during the 1990s but has subsequently fallen out of favor. As the envelope for endoscopic approaches continues to be pushed, a recurrence of interest in laparoscopic and/or endoscopic anterior approaches seems possible. Therefore, evaluating the current evidence base in regard to this approach is of much clinical relevance. To this end, a systematic literature search was performed according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines using the following keywords: "(laparoscopic OR endoscopic) AND (anterior AND lumbar)." Out of the 441 articles retrieved, 22 were selected for quantitative analysis. The primary outcome of interest was the radiographic fusion rate. The secondary outcome was the incidence of perioperative complications. Meta-analysis was performed using RStudio's "metafor" package. Of the 1,079 included patients (mean age, 41.8±2.9 years), 481 were males (44.6%). The most common indication for L-ALIF surgery was degenerative disk disease (reported by 18 studies, 81.8%). The mean follow-up duration was 18.8±11.2 months (range, 6-43 months). The pooled fusion rate was 78.9% (95% confidence interval [CI], 68.9-90.4). Complications occurred in 19.2% (95% CI, 13.4-27.4) of L-ALIF cases. Additionally, 7.2% (95% CI, 4.6-11.4) of patients required conversion from L-ALIF to open surgery. Although L-ALIF does not appear to be supported by studies available in the literature, it is important to consider the context from which these results have been obtained. Even if these results are taken at face value, the failure of endoscopy to have a role in the ALIF approach does not mean that it should not be incorporated in posterior approaches.

Background: With the recent changes to the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination grading system, an understanding of the factors that influence the neurological surgery residency match process is crucial for residency directors. The aim of the present retrospective study was to explore the associations of medical school location, ranking, private school status, size, and presence of an American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) chapter or neurological surgery interest group (NSIG) with the neurosurgery match outcomes., Methods: An enrollment list of all accredited U.S. neurosurgery residency programs was compiled on June 28, 2021. For the included residents, the residency program, degree, and previously attended medical school were retrieved. The geographic location, ranking, private school status, and size were collected for the residency programs and medical schools attended by the residents at each program., Results: A total of 1437 residents from 101 neurosurgery residency programs (89%) were included. Graduates from the top 25 medical schools were more likely to match into their home residency programs (P < 0.001) and highly ranked residency programs (P < 0.001). Students from larger medical schools were also more likely to match into larger (P < 0.001) and highly ranked (P < 0.001) programs than were applicants from smaller schools. Students from medical schools with an AANS chapter or NSIG were also more likely to match into top ranked programs (P < 0.001 for both)., Conclusions: Medical students from the top 25 medical schools, private medical schools, medical schools with an AANS chapter, and medical schools with an NSIG were more likely to match into a prestigious residency program. Objective: Despite its relatively low prevalence, schizophrenia has a high burden of illness due to its lifelong effects and the fact that it is often refractory to psychotropic treatment. This review investigated how neurosurgical interventions, primarily neuromodulation through deep brain stimulation (DBS), can mitigate treatment-refractory schizophrenia. Pathophysiological data and ongoing clinical trials were reviewed to suggest which targets hold promise for neurosurgical efficacy., Methods: A systematic review of the literature was conducted via an electronic search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Included papers were human or animal studies of neurosurgical interventions for schizophrenia conducted between 2012 and 2022. An electronic search of ClinicalTrials.gov and the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform was conducted to find ongoing clinical trials. The ROBINS-I (Risk of Bias in Nonrandomized Studies of Interventions) assessment tool was used to evaluate risk of bias in the study., Results: Eight human and 2 rat studies were included in the review. Of the human studies, 5 used DBS targeting the nucleus accumbens, subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, habenula, and substantial nigra pars reticulata. The remaining 3 human studies reported the results of subcaudate tractotomies and anterior capsulotomies. The rat studies investigated DBS of the nucleus accumbens and medial prefrontal cortex. Overall, human studies demonstrated long-term reduction in Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale scores in many participants, with a low incidence of surgical and psychological side effects. The rat studies demonstrated improved prepulse and latent inhibition in the targeted areas after DBS., Conclusions: As identified in this review, recent studies have investigated the potential effects of therapeutic DBS for schizophrenia, with varying results. DBS targets that have been explored include the hippocampus, subgenual anterior cingulate cortex, habenula, substantia nigra pars reticulata, and medial prefrontal cortex. In addition to DBS, other neuromodulatory techniques such as neuroablation have been studied. Current evidence suggests that neuroablation in the subcaudate tract and anterior capsulotomy may be beneficial for some patients. The authors recommend further exploration of neuromodulation for treatment-refractory schizophrenia, under the condition that rigorous standards be upheld when considering surgical candidacy for these treatments, given that their safety and efficacy remain to be determined.

Although early therapeutic research on psychedelics dates back to the 1940s, this field of investigation was met with many cultural and legal challenges in the 1970s. Over the past two decades, clinical trials using psychedelics have resumed. Therefore, the goal of this study was to (1) better characterize the recent uptrend in psychedelics in clinical trials and (2) identify areas where potentially new clinical trials could be initiated to help in the treatment of widely prevalent medical disorders. A systematic search was conducted on the clinicaltrials.gov database for all registered clinical trials examining the use of psychedelic drugs and was both qualitatively and quantitatively assessed. Analysis of recent studies registered in clinicaltrials.gov was performed using Pearson's correlation coefficient testing. Statistical analysis and visualization were performed using R software. In totality, 105 clinical trials met this study's inclusion criteria. The recent uptrend in registered clinical trials studying psychedelics (p = 0.002) was similar to the uptrend in total registered clinical trials in the registry (p < 0.001). All trials took place from 2007 to 2020, with 77.1% of studies starting in 2017 or later. A majority of clinical trials were in phase 1 (53.3%) or phase 2 (25.7%). Common disorders treated include substance addiction, post-traumatic stress disorder, and major depressive disorder. Potential research gaps include studying psychedelics as a potential option for symptomatic treatment during opioid tapering. There appears to be a recent uptrend in registered clinical trials studying psychedelics, which is similar to the recent increase in overall trials registered. Temperate Mesophotic Ecosystems (TMEs) are stable habitats, usually dominated by slow-growing, long-lived sessile invertebrates and sciaphilous algae. Organisms inhabiting TMEs can form complex three-dimensional structures and support many commercially important species. However, TMEs have been poorly studied, with little known about their vulnerability to environmental impacts. Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve (Ireland) supports TMEs in shallower waters (12-40 m) compared with other locations (30-150+ m) as a result of the unusual hydrodynamic conditions. Here, we report changes that have occurred on the sponge-dominated cliffs at Lough Hyne between 1990 and 2019, providing insights into TME long-term stability and vulnerability to environmental impacts. Our main finding was a marked decline in most three-dimensional sponges at the internal sites of the lough. This was likely the result of one or more mass mortality events that occurred between 2010 and 2015. We also found an increase in ascidians, which might have been more tolerant and benefited from the space freed by the sponge mortality. Finally, in the most recent surveys, we found a high abundance of sponge recruits, indicating that a natural recovery may be underway. The possible factors involved in these community changes include eutrophication, increased temperature, and a toxic event due to an anomaly in the oxycline breakdown. However, the absence of comprehensive monitoring of biotic and abiotic variables makes it impossible to identify the cause with certainty. Paedomorphosis is an important evolutionary force. It has previously been suggested that a soft-substrate sediment-dwelling (infaunal) environment facilitates paedomorphic evolution in marine invertebrates. However, until recently this proposal was never rigorously tested with robust phylogeny and broad taxon selection. Here, for the first time, we present a molecular phylogeny for a majority of the 21 families of one of the largest nudibranch subgroups (Aeolidacea) and show that the externally highly simplified vermiform nudibranch family, Pseudovermidae, with clearly defined paedomorphic traits and inhabiting a soft-substrata environment, is a sister group to the complex nudibranch family, Cumanotidae. We also report the rediscovery of one of the most enigmatic nudibranchs-Xenocratena suecica-on the Swedish and Norwegian coasts 70 years after it was first found. Xenocratena was described from the same location and environment in the Swedish Gullmar fjord as one of the most enigmatic vermiform organisms, Xenoturbella bocki, which represents either an original simple bilaterian body plan or secondary simplification of a more complex organisation. Our results show that Xenocratena suecica reveals an onset of parallel paedomorphic evolution so we have proposed the new family, Xenocratenidae fam. n., to accommodate the molecular and morphological disparities we discovered. The paedomorphic origin of another aeolidacean family, Embletoniidae, is also demonstrated for the first time. Thus, by presenting three independent lineages from non-closely related aeolidacean families, Xenocratenidae fam. n., Cumanotidae and Embletoniidae, we confirm with phylogenetic data that a soft-substrata burrowing-related environment strongly favours paedomorphic evolution. We suggest criteria to distinguish ancestral and derived characters in the context of modifications of ontogenetic cycles. Applying an evolutionary model of the soft substrate-driven multiple paedomorphic origin of several families of nudibranch molluscs we propose that it is plausible to extend this model to other marine invertebrates and suggest that the ancestral organisation of the enigmatic metazoan, Xenoturbella, might correspond to the larval part of a complex ancestral bilaterian ontogenetic cycle with sedentary/semi-sedentary adult stages and planula-like larval stages., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

'Cryptic' species are an emerging biological problem that is broadly discussed in the present study. Recently, a cryptic species definition was suggested for those species which manifest low morphological, but considerable genetic, disparity. As a case study we present unique material from a charismatic group of nudibranch molluscs of the genus Trinchesia from European waters to reveal three new species and demonstrate that they show a dual nature: on one hand, they can be considered a 'cryptic' species complex due to their overall similarity, but on the other hand, stable morphological differences as well as molecular differences are demonstrated for every species in that complex. Thus, this species complex can equally be named 'cryptic', 'pseudocryptic' or 'non-cryptic'. We also present evidence for an extremely rapid speciation rate in this species complex and link the species problem with epigenetics. Available metazoan-wide data, which are broadly discussed in the present study, show the unsuitability of a 'cryptic' species concept because the degree of crypticity represents a continuum when a finer multilevel morphological and molecular scale is applied to uncover more narrowly defined species making the 'cryptic' addition to 'species' redundant. Morphological and molecular methods should be applied in concordance to form a fine-scale multilevel taxonomic framework, and not necessarily implying only an a posteriori transformation of exclusively molecular-based 'cryptic' species into morphologically-defined 'pseudocryptic' ones. Implications of the present study have importance for many fields, including conservation biology and fine-scale biodiversity assessments.

An integrative molecular and morphological study is presented for the family Unidentiidae. Molecular phylogenetic analyses were conducted with the inclusion of all previous and newly obtained molecular data for the family Unidentiidae Millen Hermosillo 2012. A new species of the genus Unidentia Millen Hermosillo 2012, U. aliciae sp. nov., is described from Thailand as part of an inventory of sea slugs at Koh Tao. All up-to-date available morphological data for the species of the genus Unidentia is for the first time summarized. Morphological differences among the different species of Unidentia are clarified showing that every species has its own distinguishable morphological traits. According to the new molecular and morphological data, the family Unidentiidae is re-confirmed as a well-supported taxon of the aeolidacean nudibranchs. The taxonomy and phylogeny of the Aeolidacea in the light of the family Unidentiidae is briefly discussed and necessity of a fine-scale and narrowly-defined taxa approach instead of a ''superlumping'' one is highlighted.

Morphological and molecular data are presented for the first time in an integrative way for the genus Myja Bergh, 1896. In accordance with the new molecular phylogenies, the traditional Facelinidae is paraphyletic. Herein is presented the phylogenetic placement of true Facelinidae s. str., including the first molecular data for F.auriculata (Müller, 1776), type species of the genus Facelina Alder & Hancock, 1855. The taxonomic history of F.auriculata is reviewed. The genus Myja is related to the clade Facelinidae s. str., but shows disparate morphological traits. Two new species of the genus Myja , M.karin sp. n. , and M.hyotan sp. n. , are described from the Pacific waters of Japan (middle Honshu), and M.cf.longicornis Bergh, 1896 is investigated from Thailand. According to molecular analysis and review of available morphological information, the genus Myja contains more hidden diversity. The family-level relationship within aeolidacean nudibranchs with emphasis on the family Facelinidae is outlined. The problem of the relationship between Facelinidae Bergh, 1889 and Glaucidae Gray, 1827 is discussed. The family Glaucidae has precedence over Facelinidae and is phylogenetically related to the core group of Facelinidae s. str., but has a profoundly modified aberrant external morphology, thus making a purely molecular-based approach to the taxonomy an unsatisfactory solution. To accommodate recently discovered hidden diversity within glaucids, the genus Glaucilla Bergh, 1861 is restored. The family Facelinidae s. str. is separate from, and not closely related to, a clade containing the genera Dondice Marcus, 1958, Godiva MacNae 1954, Hermissenda Bergh, 1879, and Phyllodesmium Ehrenberg, 1831 (= Myrrhine Bergh, 1905). The oldest valid available name for the separate ex-facelinid paraphyletic clade that contains several facelinid genera is Myrrhinidae Bergh, 1905, and resurrection of this family name under provision of the ICZN article 40.1 can preliminarily solve the problem of paraphyly of the traditional Facelinidae. "Facelinidae" s. l. needs to be further divided into several separate families, pending further study.

The taxonomy of Zelentia Korshunova, Martynov Picton, 2017, a genus of aeolidacean nudibranchs recently separated from Trinchesia Ihering, 1879, is reviewed. Using previous and novel data, including the defining morphological characters of a supplementary gland inserted into the penis, which is also armed with stylet, it is demonstrated that the genus Zelentia is a well-established amphi-boreal taxon. A phylogenetic tree and haplotype network for species of the genus Zelentia are provided. A new species from the Northeastern Pacific, Zelentia willowsi sp. nov. and a second Northeastern Pacific species, Zelentia nepunicea sp. nov., previously thought to be "Cuthona" pustulata (Alder Hancock, 1854), are described using morphological and molecular data. A new species from the North Atlantic and sub-Arctic White Sea, Zelentia roginskae sp. nov., is also described using morphological and molecular data. The Northeastern Pacific Zelentia nepunicea sp. nov. and"Cuthona" punicea Millen, 1986, which externally share a similar reddish colouration, are shown to belong to two different families since "Cuthona" punicea possesses a supplementary gland inserted into the vas deferens and an unarmed penis, characters of the genus Cuthonella Bergh, 1884, belonging to the Cuthonellidae family. Despite belonging to different families and having significant internal differences, externally Cuthonella punicea and Zelentia nepunicea sp. nov. appear similar, thus the new sympatric species of Zelentia is given the name Z. nepunicea sp. nov. which means non punicea. To facilitate identification and avoid further confusion we provide a comparative table which encompasses diagnostic morphological data for Northeastern Pacific species of the families Cuthonidae, Cuthonellidae and Trinchesiidae which are externally similar to the described new taxa.

A unique example of brackish water fjord-related diversification of a new nudibranch genus and species Bohuslania matsmichaeli gen. n., sp. n. is presented. There are only few previously known brackish-water opisthobranchs and B. matsmichaeli gen. n., sp. n. is the first ever described brackish-water nudibranch with such an extremely limited known geographical range and apparently strict adherence to salinity levels lower than 20 per mille. Up to date the new taxon has been found only in a very restricted area in the Idefjord, bordering Sweden and Norway, but not in any other apparently suitable localities along the Swedish and Norwegian coasts. We also show in this study for the first time the molecular phylogenetic sister relationship between the newly discovered genus Bohuslania and the genus Cuthona. This supports the validity of the family Cuthonidae, which was re-established recently. Furthermore, it contributes to the understanding of the evolutionary patterns and classification of the whole group Nudibranchia. Molecular and morphological data indicate that brackish water speciation was triggered by paedomorphic evolution among aeolidacean nudibranchs at least two times independently. Thus, the present discovery of this new nudibranch genus contributes to several biological fields, including integration of molecular and morphological data as well as phylogenetic and biogeographical patterns.

The Flabellinidae, a heterogeneous assembly of supposedly plesiomorphic to very derived sea slug groups, have not yet been addressed by integrative studies. Here novel material of rarely seen Arctic taxa as well as North Atlantic, North and South Pacific, and tropical Indo-West Pacific flabellinid species is investigated morpho-anatomically and with multi-locus markers (partial COI, 16S rDNA, 28S rDNA and H3) which were generated and analysed in a comprehensive aeolid taxon sampling. It was found that the current family Flabellinidae is polyphyletic and its phylogeny and taxonomic patterns cannot be understood without considering members from all the Aeolidacean families and, based on a robust phylogenetic hypothesis, morpho-anatomical evolution of aeolids is more complex than suspected in earlier works and requires reclassification of the taxon. Morphological diversity of Flabellinidae is corroborated by molecular divergence rates and supports establishing three new families (Apataidae fam. n. , Flabellinopsidae fam. n. , Samlidae fam. n. ), 16 new genera, 13 new species, and two new subspecies among the former Flabellinidae. Two families, namely Coryphellidae and Paracoryphellidae, are restored and traditional Flabellinidae is considerably restricted. The distinctness of the recently described family Unidentiidae is confirmed by both morphological and molecular data. Several species complexes among all ex-"Flabellinidae" lineages are recognised using both morphological and molecular data. The present study shows that Facelinidae and Aeolidiidae, together with traditional "Tergipedidae", deeply divide traditional "Flabellinidae." Diagnoses for all aeolidacean families are therefore provided and additionally two new non-flabellinid families (Abronicidae fam. n. and Murmaniidae fam. n. ) within traditional tergipedids are established to accommodate molecular and morphological disparity. To address relationships and disparity, we propose a new family system for aeolids. Here the aeolidacean species are classified into at least 102 genera and 24 families. Operational rules for integration of morphological and molecular data for taxonomy are suggested.

The nudibranch Diaphorodoris luteocincta (M. Sars, 1870) shows two colour morphotypes defined as D. luteocincta var. alba and D. luteocincta var. reticulata, which are easy to identify and which share an overlapping distribution in the Mediterranean Sea and the North-Eastern Atlantic Ocean. Their systematics has long been discussed by several authors until recently when a molecular study proposed the two varieties as intraspecific colour variability occurring within D. luteocincta species. In order to solve their ranking status, we have carried out a morphological study on anatomical characters and molecular analyses on the mitochondrial markers (COI and 16S rDNA) and the nuclear H3 gene. Results proved the usefulness of the integrative taxonomy approach in assessing species delimitation; in fact Diaphorodoris alba stat. nov. and D. luteocincta were revealed to be two different species. D. luteocincta var. reticulata is confirmed as synonym of D. luteocincta s.str. A hypothesis on phylogenetic relationship among most of the currently recognised species of the genus Diaphorodoris Iredale & O'Donoghue, 1923 is also here presented.

Background: Demosponges are challenging for phylogenetic systematics because of their plastic and relatively simple morphologies and many deep divergences between major clades. To improve understanding of the phylogenetic relationships within Demospongiae, we sequenced and analyzed seven nuclear housekeeping genes involved in a variety of cellular functions from a diverse group of sponges., Methodology/principal Findings: We generated data from each of the four sponge classes (i.e., Calcarea, Demospongiae, Hexactinellida, and Homoscleromorpha), but focused on family-level relationships within demosponges. With data for 21 newly sampled families, our Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian-based approaches recovered previously phylogenetically defined taxa: Keratosa(p), Myxospongiae(p), Spongillida(p), Haploscleromorpha(p) (the marine haplosclerids) and Democlavia(p). We found conflicting results concerning the relationships of Keratosa(p) and Myxospongiae(p) to the remaining demosponges, but our results strongly supported a clade of Haploscleromorpha(p)+Spongillida(p)+Democlavia(p). In contrast to hypotheses based on mitochondrial genome and ribosomal data, nuclear housekeeping gene data suggested that freshwater sponges (Spongillida(p)) are sister to Haploscleromorpha(p) rather than part of Democlavia(p). Within Keratosa(p), we found equivocal results as to the monophyly of Dictyoceratida. Within Myxospongiae(p), Chondrosida and Verongida were monophyletic. A well-supported clade within Democlavia(p), Tetractinellida(p), composed of all sampled members of Astrophorina and Spirophorina (including the only lithistid in our analysis), was consistently revealed as the sister group to all other members of Democlavia(p). Within Tetractinellida(p), we did not recover monophyletic Astrophorina or Spirophorina. Our results also reaffirmed the monophyly of order Poecilosclerida (excluding Desmacellidae and Raspailiidae), and polyphyly of Hadromerida and Halichondrida., Conclusions/significance: These results, using an independent nuclear gene set, confirmed many hypotheses based on ribosomal and/or mitochondrial genes, and they also identified clades with low statistical support or clades that conflicted with traditional morphological classification. Our results will serve as a basis for future exploration of these outstanding questions using more taxon- and gene-rich datasets.

The current morphological classification of the Demospongiae G4 clade was tested using large subunit ribosomal RNA (LSU rRNA) sequences from 119 taxa. Fifty-three mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase 1 (CO1) barcoding sequences were also analysed to test whether the 28S phylogeny could be recovered using an independent gene. This is the largest and most comprehensive study of the Demospongiae G4 clade. The 28S and CO1 genetrees result in congruent clades but conflict with the current morphological classification. The results confirm the polyphyly of Halichondrida, Hadromerida, Dictyonellidae, Axinellidae and Poecilosclerida and show that several of the characters used in morphological classifications are homoplasious. Background: Small and cryptic sponges associated with cold-water coral reefs are particularly numerous and challenging to identify, but their ecological and biochemical importance is likely to compete with megabenthic specimens., Methodology/principal Findings: Here we use a combination of the standard M1M6 and I3M11 partitions of the COI fragment, partial rDNA 28S sequences and morphology to delineate small encrusting Plocamionida species. In total, 46 specimens were retrieved from seven shallow to deep-water coral locations, crossing 3,000 km along the European margins. Our work provides evidence that the Plocamionida ambigua f. tylotata and f. grandichelata can be considered valid species, whereas Plocamionida ambigua f. tornata corresponds to the species P. ambigua. Within the monophyletic group of Plocamionida, P. microcionides is shown as really divergent from the other taxa, and four putative new Plocamionida species are suggested., Conclusions/significance: This study shows that the use of molecular and morphological information in an integrative approach is a powerful tool for the identification of sponge species, and suggests that an under-estimated biodiversity of sponges occurs in cold-water coral reefs.
