Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Image and Video Processing - Abstract
In the last decade, novel hyperspectral cameras have been developed with particularly desirable characteristics of compactness and short acquisition time, retaining their potential to obtain spectral/spatial resolution competitive with respect to traditional cameras. However, a computational effort is required to recover an interpretable data cube. In this work we focus our attention on imaging spectrometers based on interferometry, for which the raw acquisition is an image whose spectral component is expressed as an interferogram. Previous works have focused on the inversion of such acquisition on a pixel-by-pixel basis within a Bayesian framework, leaving behind critical information on the spatial structure of the image data cube. In this work, we address this problem by integrating a spatial regularization for image reconstruction, showing that the combination of spectral and spatial regularizers leads to enhanced performances with respect to the pixelwise case. We compare our results with Plug-and-Play techniques, as its strategy to inject a set of denoisers from the literature can be implemented seamlessly with our physics-based formulation of the optimization problem., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Signal Processing - Abstract
Hyperspectral imaging is gathering significant attention due to its potential in various domains such as geology, agriculture, ecology, and surveillance. However, the associated processing algorithms, which are essential for enhancing output quality and extracting relevant information, are often computationally intensive and have to deal with substantial data volumes. Our focus lies on reconfigurable hardware, particularly recent FPGAs. While FPGA design can be complex, High Level Synthesis (HLS) workflows have emerged as a solution, abstracting low-level design intricacies and enhancing productivity. Despite successful prior efforts using HLS for hyperspectral imaging acceleration, we lack a comprehensive research to benchmark various algorithms and architectures within a unified framework. This study aims to quantitatively evaluate performance across different inversion algorithms and design architectures, providing insights for optimal trade-offs for specific applications. We apply this analysis to the case study of spectrum reconstruction processed from interferometric acquisitions taken by Fourier transform spectrometers., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Abstract Background Early pregnancy Zika virus (ZIKV) infection is associated with major brain damage in fetuses, leading to microcephaly in 0.6–5.0% of cases, but the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Methods To understand the kinetics of ZIKV infection during fetal development in a nonhuman primate model, four cynomolgus macaque fetuses were exposed in utero through echo-guided intramuscular inoculation with 103 PFU of ZIKV at 70–80 days of gestation, 2 controls were mock inoculated. Clinical, immuno-virological and ultrasound imaging follow-ups of the mother/fetus pairs were performed until autopsy after cesarean section 1 or 2 months after exposure (n = 3 per group). Results ZIKV was transmitted from the fetus to the mother and then replicate in the peripheral blood of the mother from week 1 to 4 postexposure. Infected fetal brains tended to be smaller than those of controls, but not the femur lengths. High level of viral RNA ws found after the first month in brain tissues and placenta. Thereafter, there was partial control of the virus in the fetus, resulting in a decreased number of infected tissue sections and a decreased viral load. Immune cellular and humoral responses were effectively induced. Conclusions ZIKV infection during the second trimester of gestation induces short-term brain injury, and although viral genomes persist in tissues, most of the virus is cleared before delivery.

Preterm infants ,Lung recruitment ,HFOV ,INRECSURE ,LISA ,Surfactant ,Medicine (General) ,R5-920 - Abstract
Abstract Background Surfactant is a well-established therapy for preterm neonates affected by respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The goals of different methods of surfactant administration are to reduce the duration of mechanical ventilation and the severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD); however, the optimal administration method remains unknown. This study compares the effectiveness of the INtubate-RECruit-SURfactant-Extubate (IN-REC-SUR-E) technique with the less-invasive surfactant administration (LISA) technique, in increasing BPD-free survival of preterm infants. This is an international unblinded multicenter randomized controlled study in which preterm infants will be randomized into two groups to receive IN-REC-SUR-E or LISA surfactant administration. Methods In this study, 382 infants born at 24+0–27+6 weeks’ gestation, not intubated in the delivery room and failing nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) or nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) during the first 24 h of life, will be randomized 1:1 to receive IN-REC-SUR-E or LISA surfactant administration. The primary outcome is a composite outcome of death or BPD at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age. The secondary outcomes are BPD at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age; death; pulse oximetry/fraction of inspired oxygen; severe intraventricular hemorrhage; pneumothorax; duration of respiratory support and oxygen therapy; pulmonary hemorrhage; patent ductus arteriosus undergoing treatment; percentage of infants receiving more doses of surfactant; periventricular leukomalacia, severe retinopathy of prematurity, necrotizing enterocolitis, sepsis; total in-hospital stay; systemic postnatal steroids; neurodevelopmental outcomes; and respiratory function testing at 24 months of age. Randomization will be centrally provided using both stratification and permuted blocks with random block sizes and block order. Stratification factors will include center and gestational age (24+0 to 25+6 weeks or 26+0 to 27+6 weeks). Analyses will be conducted in both intention-to-treat and per-protocol populations, utilizing a log-binomial regression model that corrects for stratification factors to estimate the adjusted relative risk (RR). Discussion This trial is designed to provide robust data on the best method of surfactant administration in spontaneously breathing preterm infants born at 24+0–27+6 weeks’ gestation affected by RDS and failing nCPAP or NIPPV during the first 24 h of life, comparing IN-REC-SUR-E to LISA technique, in increasing BPD-free survival at 36 weeks’ postmenstrual age of life. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov NCT05711966. Registered on February 3, 2023.

This study aims to investigate the possible relationship between the mechanisms of social influence and the choice of airline, through the use of new tools, with the aim of understanding whether they can contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing the decisions of consumers in the aviation sector. We have chosen to extract user reviews from well-known platforms: Trustpilot, Google, and Twitter. By combining web scraping techniques, we have been able to collect a comprehensive dataset comprising a wide range of user opinions, feedback, and ratings. We then refined the BERT model to focus on insightful sentiment in the context of airline reviews. Through our analysis, we observed an intriguing trend of average negative sentiment scores across various airlines, giving us deeper insight into the dynamics between airlines and helping us identify key partnerships, popular routes, and airlines that play a central role in the aeronautical ecosystem of Catania airport during the specified period. Our investigation led us to find that, despite an airline having received prestigious awards as a low-cost leader in Europe for two consecutive years 2021 and 2022, the "Catanese" user tends to suffer the dominant position of other companies. Understanding the impact of positive reviews and leveraging sentiment analysis can help airlines improve their reputation, attract more customers, and ultimately gain a competitive edge in the marketplace., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1311.3475 by other authors

Electrical Engineering and Systems Science - Image and Video Processing - Abstract
Microsatellites and drones are often equipped with digital cameras whose sensing system is based on color filter arrays (CFAs), which define a pattern of color filter overlaid over the focal plane. Recent commercial cameras have started implementing RGBW patterns, which include some filters with a wideband spectral response together with the more classical RGB ones. This allows for additional light energy to be captured by the relevant pixels and increases the overall SNR of the acquisition. Demosaicking defines reconstructing a multi-spectral image from the raw image and recovering the full color components for all pixels. However, this operation is often tailored for the most widespread patterns, such as the Bayer pattern. Consequently, less common patterns that are still employed in commercial cameras are often neglected. In this work, we present a generalized framework to represent the image formation model of such cameras. This model is then exploited by our proposed demosaicking algorithm to reconstruct the datacube of interest with a Bayesian approach, using a total variation regularizer as prior. Some preliminary experimental results are also presented, which apply to the reconstruction of acquisitions of various RGBW cameras.

Recently, an increasing interest in the management of water and health resources has been recorded. This interest is fed by the global sustainability challenges posed to the humanity that have water scarcity and quality at their core. Thus, the availability of effective, meaningful and open data is crucial to address those issues in the broader context of the Sustainable Development Goals of clean water and sanitation as targeted by the United Nations. In this paper, we present the Water Health Open Knowledge Graph (WHOW-KG) along with its design methodology and analysis on impact. WHOW-KG is a semantic knowledge graph that models data on water consumption, pollution, infectious disease rates and drug distribution. The WHOW-KG is developed in the context of the EU-funded WHOW (Water Health Open Knowledge) project and aims at supporting a wide range of applications: from knowledge discovery to decision-making, making it a valuable resource for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners in the water and health domains. The WHOW-KG consists of a network of five ontologies and related linked open data, modelled according to those ontologies., Comment: 17 pages

In recent years, the demand for hyperspectral imaging devices has grown significantly, driven by their ability of capturing high-resolution spectral information. Among the several possible optical designs for acquiring hyperspectral images, there is a growing interest in interferometric spectral imaging systems based on division of aperture. These systems have the advantage of capturing snapshot acquisitions while maintaining a compact design. However, they require a careful calibration to operate properly. In this work, we present the interferometer response characterization algorithm (IRCA), a robust three-step procedure designed to characterize the transmittance response of multi-aperture imaging spectrometers based on the interferometry of Fabry-Perot. Additionally, we propose a formulation of the image formation model for such devices suitable to estimate the parameters of interest by considering the model under various regimes of finesse. The proposed algorithm processes the image output obtained from a set of monochromatic light sources and refines the results using nonlinear regression after an ad-hoc initialization. Through experimental analysis conducted on four different prototypes from the Image SPectrometer On Chip (ImSPOC) family, we validate the performance of our approach for characterization. Physics - Physics and Society ,Computer Science - Social and Information Networks - Abstract
Social networks play an important role in people's daily socialization, particularly through social media platforms, which have become key channels for communication and information dissemination. The digital ecosystem does not only evolve communication on multi-network (like TV, social media, and online newspapers) but also provides the social researcher with useful data to explain social-complex dynamics. Our work focus on cultural dynamics-reactions that occurred during the 2020 Emilia-Romagna elections'' in Italy, where a stronghold culture felt in danger of losing against the strong populism and Euro-scepticism present in digital ecosystems. We would like to show how the interaction between parts of the society, during cultural and/or political shifting, can lead to or induce emerging behaviour from society, creating groups that react against or improve the status quo. We developed a word-entry network based on three different levels of participation: pro, con, and neutral. We have analyzed the tweets collected (as text) with the word embedding tools, to see, the most used words (which may suggest the main topics) and the most related words among the various groups. We show how a careful analysis of groups through networks, can give important information about the current event., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

App IO is an app developed for the Italian PA. It is definitely useful for citizens to interact with the PA and to get services that were not digitized yet. Nevertheless, it was not perceived in a good way by the citizens and it has been criticized. As we wanted to find the root that caused all these bad reviews we scraped feedback from mobile app stores using custom-coded automated tools and - after that - we trained two machine learning models to perform both sentiment analysis and emotion detection to understand what caused the bad reviews.

Abstract Prior research has identified differential protein expression levels of linker histone H1x within the ventral hippocampus (vHipp) of stress-susceptible versus stress-resilient mice. These mice are behaviorally classified based on their divergent responses to chronic social stress. Here, we sought to determine whether elevated vHipp H1x protein levels directly contribute to these diverging behavioral adaptations to stress. First, we demonstrated that stress-susceptible mice uniquely express elevated vHipp H1x protein levels following chronic stress. Given that linker histones coordinate heterochromatin compaction, we hypothesize that elevated levels of H1x in the vHipp may impede pro-resilience transcriptional adaptations and prevent development of the resilient phenotype following social stress. To test this, 8–10-week-old male C57BL/6 J mice were randomly assigned to groups undergoing 10 days of chronic social defeat stress (CSDS) or single housing, respectively. Following CSDS, mice were classified as susceptible versus resilient based on their social interaction behaviors. We synthesized a viral overexpression (OE) vector for H1x and transduced all stressed and single housed mice with either H1x or control GFP within vHipp. Following viral delivery, we conducted social, anxiety-like, and memory-reliant behavior tests on distinct cohorts of mice. We found no behavioral adaptations following H1x OE compared to GFP controls in susceptible, resilient, or single housed mice. In sum, although we confirm elevated vHipp protein levels of H1x associate with susceptibility to social stress, we observe no significant behavioral consequence of H1x OE. Thus, we conclude elevated levels of H1x are associated with, but are not singularly sufficient to drive development of behavioral adaptations to stress.

Abstract Background TAS-102 (Lonsurf®) is an oral fluoropyrimidine consisting of a combination of trifluridine (a thymidine analog) and tipiracil (a thymidine phosphorylation inhibitor). The drug is effective in metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients refractory to fluorouracil, irinotecan and oxaliplatin. This study is a real-world analysis, investigating the interplay of genotype/phenotype in relation to TAS-102 sensitivity. Methods Forty-seven consecutive mCRC patients were treated with TAS-102 at the National Cancer Institute of Naples from March 2019 to March 2021, at a dosage of 35 mg/m2, twice a day, in cycles of 28 days (from day 1 to 5 and from day 8 to 12). Clinical-pathological parameters were described. Activity was evaluated with RECIST criteria (v1.1) and toxicity with NCI-CTC (v5.0). Survival was depicted through the Kaplan-Meyer curves. Genetic features of patients were evaluated with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) through the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform and TruSigt™Oncology 500 kit. Results Median age of patients was 65 years (range: 46–77). Forty-one patients had 2 or more metastatic sites and 38 patients underwent to more than 2 previous lines of therapies. ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) Performance Status (PS) was 2 in 19 patients. The median number of TAS-102 cycles was 4 (range: 2–12). The most frequent toxic event was neutropenia (G3/G4 in 16 patients). There were no severe (> 3) non-haematological toxicities or treatment-related deaths. Twenty-six patients experienced progressive disease (PD), 21 stable disease (SD). Three patients with long-lasting disease control (DC: complete, partial responses or stable disease) shared an FGFR4 (p.Gly388Arg) mutation. Patients experiencing DC had more frequently a low tumour growth rate (P = 0.0306) and an FGFR4 p.G388R variant (P

This paper aims to show how some popular topics on social networks can be used to predict online newspaper views, related to the topics. Newspapers site and many social networks, become a good source of data to analyse and explain complex phenomena. Understanding the entropy of a topic, could help all organizations that need to share information like government, institution, newspaper or company, to expect an higher activity over their channels, and in some cases predict what the receiver expect from the senders or what is wrong about the communication. For some organization such political party, leaders, company and many others, the reputation and the communication are (for most of them) the key part of a more and complex huge system. To reach our goal, we use gathering tools and information theory to detect and analyse trends topic on social networks, with the purpose of proved a method that helps organization, newspapers to predict how many articles or communication they will have to do on a topic, and how much flow of views they will have in a given period, starting with the entropy-article ratio. Our work address the issue to explore in which entropy-rate, and through which dynamics, a suitable information diffusion performance is expected on social network and then on newspaper. We have identified some cross-cutting dynamics that, associated with the contexts, might explain how people discuss about a topic, can move on to argue and informs on newspapers sites., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, journal

Diabetes and other pathologic conditions can disrupt the wound healing process, leading to chronic wounds, that are responsible for serious infections. Egg white proteins, such as lysozyme and ovotransferrin, are attracting interest especially because of their demonstrated antioxidant and antibacterial activities. These bioactive proteins can then be used to enrich advanced wound dressing films, which can help control wound oxidative stress and thereby accelerate wound healing and/or prevent bacterial infection. The aim of this work is to develop novel hydrogel formulations, based on blends of a synthetic polymer and polysaccharides, and incorporating egg white proteins and/or their peptides, to investigate their applicability as advanced wound dressings. The rheological properties of the hydrogels were investigated to assess the viscoelastic properties and gelation behaviour. The microstructure of the hydrogel dressings was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The erosion in PBS buffer was also evaluated. Flexible, skin-adhesive hydrogel films with potential applications in wound healing were obtained.

Transport quality has long been recognized as an important factor in influencing travelers’ behavior, and transport terminal quality undoubtedly plays no small part. Indeed, transit promotion policies explicitly based on qualitative factors and high-standard architecture are increasingly being adopted in designing new bus terminals and stops. High architectural standards can be found in several bus terminals worldwide. Nevertheless, the literature in transport sector has yet to explore the impact of bus terminal “hedonic quality” on users’ behavior or use their willingness to pay (WTP) in cost–benefit analyses or other transport policy applications. Hedonic value is here intended as the aggregate of all elements related to travelers’ pleasure in spending time in a terminal where architectural beauty and the passenger services offered are arguably the most visible and representative attributes. Within this context, we propose a quantitative analysis of the perceived hedonic value of bus nodes in terms of users’ WTP (pure preference) for a high-quality bus terminal. To this end a discrete choice experiment based on a visual immersive experience was performed, and data were collected from 324 residents of Milan (Italy) traveling for tourism. Different binomial Mixed Logit models with panel data and random coefficients were estimated for the purpose. Monetary valuation of pure preference for using a high-quality bus terminal was estimated with a mean of about 25 % of the average trip cost observed for the case study considered. This pure preference means that the Italian tourist is willing to spend up to €4.35/trip more for a high-quality bus waiting space or travel up to 28.2 min/trip more, instead of using a traditional bus terminal for the same trip. Category-specific analyses show that females > 30 years old have a greater pure preference for a high-quality bus terminal (up to + 220 %) against males and young users. The employed also have a higher (+42 %) pure preference for the beauty of a bus terminal against others. The results of this paper should be compared with those from other case studies as they have a potential impact for transportation planning applications, underling the importance of also incorporating “hedonic quality” as explicit design variables for new/revamped transportation hub. At the same time, new challenges are posed for modeling user behavior and determining quality-related indicators and measures.

Summary: Human genetic studies of critical COVID-19 pneumonia have revealed the essential role of type I interferon-dependent innate immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Conversely, an association between the HLA-B∗15:01 allele and asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated individuals was recently reported, suggesting a contribution of pre-existing T cell-dependent adaptive immunity. We report a lack of association of classical HLA alleles, including HLA-B∗15:01, with pre-omicron asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection in unvaccinated participants in a prospective population-based study in the United States (191 asymptomatic vs. 945 symptomatic COVID-19 cases). Moreover, we found no such association in the international COVID Human Genetic Effort cohort (206 asymptomatic vs. 574 mild or moderate COVID-19 cases and 1,625 severe or critical COVID-19 cases). Finally, in the Human Challenge Characterisation study, the three HLA-B∗15:01 individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed symptoms. As with other acute primary infections studied, no classical HLA alleles favoring an asymptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection were identified.
