Abstract

International audience; Understanding micro-seismicity is a critical question for earthquake hazard assessment. Since the devastating earthquakes of Izmit and Duzce in 1999, the seismicity along the submerged section of North Anatolian Fault within the Sea of Marmara (comprising the "Istanbul seismic gap") has been extensively studied in order to infer its mechanical behaviour (creeping vs locked). So far, the seismicity has been interpreted only in terms of being tectonic-driven, although the Main Marmara Fault (MMF) is known to strike across multiple hydrocarbon gas sources. Here, we show that a large number of the aftershocks that followed the M 5.1 earthquake of July, 25th 2011 in the western Sea of Marmara, occurred within a zone of gas overpressuring in the 1.5-5 km depth range, from where pressurized gas is expected to migrate along the MMF, up to the surface sediment layers. Hence, gas-related processes should also be considered for a complete interpretation of the micro-seismicity (similar to M < 3) within the Istanbul offshore domain.

8. Strain localization in the Sea of Marmara: propagation of the North Anatolian Fault in a now inactive pull-apart

Abstract

[1] The Sea of Marmara is presently the site of pure dextral strike-slip faulting that connects the Izmit Fault in the east to the Ganos Fault in the west along a linear strike-slip fault that is part of the northwestern branch of the North Anatolian Fault. This active Main Marmara Fault (MMF) cuts across a succession of depocenters and highs. Analysis of a large data set that includes multichannel seismic lines, sparker and deep towed high definition seismics, shows that most of the N120[degrees]E trending normal faults framing these depocenters are now inactive as they are sealed by an average thickness of 300 m of sediments. The highs correspond to a series of NE-SW trending anticlines and reverse faults blanketed by a thin cover of undeformed sediments. We interpret these structures as inverted former transfer faults of the now inactive Sea of Marmara pull-apart system. Depocenters and highs are the relicts of a former pull-apart basins and transfer faults system that accommodated the North Anatolian Fault motion within the Sea of Marmara prior to the formation of the MMF. We propose that a relatively short (a few hundreds of thousands of years) period of basin inversion accompanied the localization of strain along the present Main Marmara Fault, until it was fully formed, 200 [+ or -] 100 Kyr ago. The preexisting pull-apart basin system accounts for about 30 km of motion along this fault system and thus probably appeared sometime in late Pliocene or early Pleistocene as a reactivated portion of the old Thrace basin. During the Plio-Quaternary the Sea of Marmara has been the site of progressive localization of strain. Abstract

The collision of India with Asia results in a rapidly changing stress pattern around both Himalayan syntaxes. The maximum compressive stress, which is north-south north of the indenter, fans radially through nearly 180 degrees around the syntaxes to accommodate the necessary strike-slip motion on the edges of the indenter. Thus, the whole Indochina Peninsula was swept by the migrating stress and associated strain pattern as the eastern syntaxis moved to the north. As a result, the maximum horizontal component of the stress field is predicted to have been first oriented east-west, then north-south. We propose that this changing stress field controlled the opening of the sedimentary basins and of the South China Sea as well as the direction of motion of the major strike-slip faults.

24. New structural constraints on the southern Provence thrust belt (France): evidences for an Eocene shortening event linked to the Corsica-Sardinia subduction

Abstract

We reply to the comments of J. Philip regarding the structure of La Nerthe range (southern Provence, France) and the timing of the deformation. We first agree with J. Philip on the structural independence of La Nerthe and L’Etoile ranges. We then discuss the allochthonous and autochthonous models. The allochthonous model mainly relies on a reactivation of a N-verging thrust during the Oligocene. There are no evidences for a Middle Rupelian thrusting event and the interpretation of the Oligocene series in southern Provence area was entirely revised. J. Philip’s Argumentation is solely based on the existence of steep dipping Rupelian limestones. However we demonstrate that they could be tilted along normal faults as it is the case in the Marseille basin. Recent works clearly show that the Oligocene Marseille and Saint-Pierre basins have a similar tectonic history resulting from two main extensional events. The last point debated by J. Philip is the age of the strike-slip faults. As it is pointed in our contribution the strike-slip fault planes cut folded strata and were reactivated during an extensional event. This strike-slip faulting event occurred between the latest stages of the main Bartonian compressional event and the beginning of the Early Rupelian extensional tectonics. As pointed by J. Philip the E-trending faults of Saint-Pierre basin acted as normal faults during the Oligocene. We however suggest that these faults were inherited from the Late Eocene strike-slip tectonics and reactivated during the Oligocene.

25. The Active Main Marmara Fault

Abstract

This paper presents selections from and a synthesis of a high resolution bathymetric, sparker and deep-towed seismic reflection data set recently acquired by the French Ifremer R. V Le Suroit in an E-W deep trough that forms the northern half of the Sea of Marmara in NW Turkey. It includes the first high resolution complete bathymetric map of this area. A single, throughgoing dextral strike-slip fault system, which is the western continuation of the northern branch of the North Anatolian Fault, cuts this trough lengthwise and joins the 1999.8.17 Kocaeli earthquake fault with the 1912.8.09 Sarkoy-Murefte earthquake fault, both of which display strike-slip offset. In its eastern one fourth, the structure follows closely the northern margin of the deep trough, whereas in the west it hugs its southern margin. The eastern one fourth of the structure has a minor component of its displacement distributed across the deep trough owing to a possible original bend in the course of the dextral structure. The present course of the North Anatolian Fault in the Sea of Marmara originated some 2 x 10(5) a ago, by cutting across the older basin fabric generated by a dominant NNE-SSW extension before it began taking up major motion in the Pliocene. Abstract

The submerged section of the North Anatolian fault within the Marmara Sea was investigated using acoustic techniques and submersible dives. Most gas emissions in the water column were found near the surface expression of known active faults. Gas emissions are unevenly distributed. Abstract

Trench-parallel thrust faults verging both landward and seaward were mapped in the portion of wedge located between northern Sumatra and the Indian-Indonesian boundary. The spatial aftershocks distribution of the 26th December 2004 earthquake shows that the post-seismic motion is partitioned along two thrust faults, the Lower and Median Thrust Faults, the latter being right-laterally offset by a N-S lower plate fracture zone located along the 93.6 degrees N meridian. Between February 2005 and August 2005, the upper plate aftershock activity shifted from southeast of this fracture zone to northwest of it, suggesting that the lower plate left-lateral motion along the fracture zone may have induced a shift of the upper plate post-seismic activity along the Median Thrust Fault. Based on swath bathymetric and 3.5 kHz data, co-seismic deformations were weak close to the trench. Joint seismic-geodetic determination of slip distribution and time arrivals and heights of tsunami waves suggest that the co-seismic slip was maximum along a portion of the Upper Thrust Fault located north of the Tuba Ridge, suggesting that the Upper Thrust Fault might be a splay fault originated at the interplate fault plane. As the Upper Thrust Fault is steeper than the slab, the vertical motion of the adjacent Outer Arc and overlying water is much larger compared to the one resulting from slip on the megathrust alone, increasing tsunamogenic effects.

Abstract

Post-transcriptional control of gene expression is mediated by the interaction of RNA-binding proteins with their cognate mRNAs that specifically regulate their stability, localization and translation. mRNA-binding proteins are multifunctional and it has been proposed therefore that a combinatorial RNA-binding protein code exists that allows specific protein sub-complexes to control cytoplasmic gene expression under a range of pathophysiological conditions. We show that polypyrimidine tract-binding protein (PTB) is central to one such complex that forms in apoptotic cells. Thus, during apoptosis initiated by TNF-related apoptosis inducing ligand there is a change in the repertoire of RNA-binding proteins with which PTB interacts. We show that altering the cellular levels of PTB and its binding partners, either singly or in combination, is sufficient to directly change the rates of apoptosis with increased expression of PTB, YBX1, PSF and NONO/p54nrb accelerating this process. Mechanistically, we show that these proteins post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression, and therefore apoptotic rates, by interacting with and stimulating the activity of RNA elements (internal ribosome entry segments) found in mRNAs that are translated during apoptosis. Taken together, our data show that PTB function is controlled by a set of co-recruited proteins and importantly provide further evidence that it is possible to dictate cell fate by modulating cytoplasmic gene expression pathways alone.
