Unconscious processes are often assumed immune from attention influence. Recent behavioral studies suggest however that the processing of subliminal information can be influenced by temporal attention. To examine the neural mechanisms underlying these effects, we used a stringent masking paradigm together with fMRI to investigate how temporal attention modulates the processing of unseen (masked) faces. Participants performed a gender decision task on a visible neutral target face, preceded by a masked prime face that could vary in gender (same or different than target) and emotion expression (neutral or fearful). We manipulated temporal attention by instructing participants to expect targets to appear either early or late during the stimulus sequence. Orienting temporal attention to subliminal primes influenced response priming by masked faces, even when gender was incongruent. In addition, gender-congruent primes facilitated responses regardless of attention while gender-incongruent primes reduced accuracy when attended. Emotion produced no differential effects. At the neural level, incongruent and temporally unexpected primes increased brain response in regions of the fronto-parietal attention network, reflecting greater recruitment of executive control and reorienting processes. Congruent and expected primes produced higher activations in fusiform cortex, presumably reflecting facilitation of perceptual processing. These results indicate that temporal attention can influence subliminal processing of face features, and thus facilitate information integration according to task-relevance regardless of conscious awareness. They also suggest that task-congruent information between prime and target may facilitate response priming even when temporal attention is not selectively oriented to the prime onset time.

Multivariate pattern analysis has been applied successfully to task-based and resting-based fMRI studies to investigate which neural markers distinguish individuals with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) from controls. Given the wealth of existing fMRI datasets, there is a need for techniques that can merge information from multiple datasets. We propose a data-driven approach that we apply to 2 fMRI experiments acquired in the same group of ASD (n=15) and control subjects (n=14). Methods. The 1st experiment (Conty, Dezecache, Hugueville, & Grezes, 2012) addressed how ASD participants process anger expressions. We presented pictures of individuals expressing social cues (i.e. gaze) directed or not at the observer (factors gaze direction*emotion, total 4 conditions). The 2nd experiment (Pichon, De Gelder, & Grèzes, 2012) aimed at distinguishing between automaticity and attention in the processing of emotional stimuli varying attention while observing movie-clips depicting angry, fear and neutral body actions (factors attention*emotion, total 4 conditions). For each subject and experiment, we collected 370 EPI volumes (TR=2000ms). fMRI images were processed and analyzed using SPM8. Motion artefacts were taken into account by adding 24 motion-related regressors in each models (Friston, Williams, Howard, Frackowiak, & Turner, 1996). We first classified ASD from controls (figure 1). We trained a linear Support Vector Machine (SVM) independently for each condition using the raw beta maps as inputs. The continuous outputs of the classifiers were then averaged to obtain a final decision for each subject. The accuracy was computed for each experiment (i.e. combination of 4 conditions) and for the fusion of the two experiments (i.e. combination of 8 conditions). The significance of the accuracy was computed using a binomial test. Although SVMs achieve good performance in high dimensional spaces, they can still benefit from feature selection methods. In addition, feature selection allows investigating the location of voxel activities driving the classification performance. Therefore we employed SVM Recursive Feature Elimination (SVM RFE) (Guyon, Weston, Barnhill, & Vapnik, 2002) to order features by relevance and restrain the classification to a subset of discriminant voxels. To identify the most discriminative voxels across experiments (i.e. voxels which are well ranked by SVM RFE on several conditions), we employed an approximation of the rank product test (Koziol, 2010). Results. The accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the different classification methods are reported in Table1. Regarding accuracy, the fusion of experiments reflected the accuracy of the most discriminative experiment. The fusion dramatically increased the significance of discriminative features and increased the number of significant discriminative voxels by roughly 50%. Discriminative voxels (figure2) were found in regions related to social cognition (FFA, OFA, EBA, STS, TPJ and premotor). These regions showed reduced contribution in ASD compared to controls. Feature selection did not improve accuracy but helped reducing the correlation of classifiers' output with motion (figure 3). Conclusions. These results show that the method is efficient for selecting features that are common across experiments, for identifying discriminative brain activity and for reducing motion artefacts. Identified areas were astonishingly consistent with brain regions of the “social-brain” known to show aberrant functioning in ASD. One of the originalities of our method is that the computed statistic is based only on the features ranks. Consequently, this method could be used to combine heterogeneous data sources such as different fMRI experiments, different BOLD-related signals (i.e. activation magnitude, connectivity) or even different brain imaging modalities (i.e. structural MRI, voxel-based morphometry, functional MRI, PET).

International audience; Aims of the study. — The scope of individuals' motor repertoire and expertise influences the way they perceive the actions of others. When observing skilled actions, experts recruit the cortical network subserving action perception (action observation network, AON) to a greater extent than non-experts. However, it remains unknown whether and how a temporary motor injury affects activation within the AON. Materials and methods. — To investigate this issue, brain hemodynamic activity was recorded twice in thirteen national female gymnasts suffering from a lower extremity injury at the onset of the experiment. The gymnasts were scanned one month after the injury and were shown gymnastics routines they were able and temporarily unable to perform. Six months later, after complete recovery, they were scanned again and shown the same routines they were now able to practice. Results. — Results showed: first, that the level of activity within the inferior parietal lobule and MT/V5/EBA (extrastriate body area), areas constitutive of the AON, was independent of the gymnasts' physical condition. Second, when gymnasts were hurt (vs. when recovered), higher activity in the cerebellum was detected.

L’objet de cette étude était d’améliorer la compréhension des processus mobilisés par l’être humain lors de l’observation de comportements réalisés par ses congénères et d’examiner si l’incapacité temporaire d’un agent observateur de réaliser certaines actions permettait l’accès aux représentations motrices de ces actions. Plus spécifiquement, il s’est agi d’investiguer si le système des neurones miroirs (SNM) chez le sportif blessé était activé. Treize gymnastes féminines expertes, blessées au membre inférieur au début de l’expérimentation, ont été scannées à deux reprises. Le premier examen IRM a eu lieu lorsqu’elles étaient blessées, le second lorsqu’elles étaient rétablies c’est-à-dire six mois plus tard. Lors du premier examen par IRM, les gymnastes ont été scannées alors qu’elles observaient des mouvements qu’ellesétaient en mesure de réaliser (i.e., mouvements aux barres asymétriques) et des mouvements qu’elles étaient incapables temporairement d’exécuter (i.e., mouvements au sol). Lors du second examen par IRM, une procédure similaire a été mise en place mais, cette fois-ci, les sujets étaient aptes à effectuer tous les mouvements visionnés. Une séquence en écho-planar (EPI) pondérée en T2 a été utilisée. Les résultats ont montré que le SNM classiquement cité dans la littérature (i.e., cortices prémoteur latéral et pariétal) était activé que les gymnastes soient capables ou non de réaliser les mouvements observés. Par contre, lors du visionnage de mouvements temporairement irréalisables par ces sportives, une diminution d’activation au sein de l’AMS, du cortex moteur cingulaire, et du gyrus postcentral (BA2) (régionsrécemment reconnues comme appartenant au réseau des NM) et une augmentation d’activation au sein des aires visuelles (i.e., STS et gyrus fusiforme) ont été révélées. Ces résultats ont été discutés en relation avec les travaux récents réalisés dans le domaine des neurosciences cognitives et computationnelles. Des conséquences pour l’entraînement sportif ont été évoquées.

In neurosciences, there is increasing interest in studying affective, emotional and social processes in humans and animals. What are the conceptual framework identified for these studies and the technical approaches undertaken? What information has already emerged from these studies? Which results have already been obtained and what are the researchers' goals? Can these neuroimaging analyses provide novel insights to improve our understanding of psychiatric disorders? These are some of the questions addressed in this concise overview of our knowledge in this domain.

Cette recherche a pour but d’évaluer la faisabilité d’un entraînement cognitif de 6 semaines visant à entrainer l’attention au moyen d’une tâche gamifiée, conçue à cet effet, et de mesurer l’effet de cette intervention sur le contrôle attentionnel et l’anxiété via des tâches expérimentales et des questionnaires réalisés depuis le domicile des participants. D’un point de vue théorique, nous nous intéressons spécifiquement aux relations entre le contrôle attentionnel et l’anxiété, notamment à la manière dont une amélioration du contrôle attentionnel pourrait causalement bénéficier à la régulation de l’anxiété. Les sujets ont été divisés aléatoirement en un groupe expérimental et un groupe contrôle. Le groupe expérimental a réalisé l’entraînement d’une durée de 15 heures sur une période de 6 semaines et a effectué des tests avant (t1-pré-test) et après la fin de l’entraînement (t2-post-test). Le groupe contrôle (waitlist) a servi de groupe de référence non-entrainé et a été testé à deux reprises après l’inclusion dans l’étude (t1) et 6 semaines après l’inclusion (t2), puis s’est vu proposer d’effectuer l'entraînement. Les groupes ont été comparés sur des résultats liés à l’adhésion à l’entraînement, en l’occurrence les participants ont-ils complété la totalité de l’entraînement, au contrôle attentionnel et à l’anxiété, mesurés à l’aide de tâches expérimentales et de questionnaires passés en ligne, depuis le domicile des participants. Les résultats de cette étude (n = 40) indiquent une tendance vers l’amélioration du contrôle attentionnel à la suite de l’entraînement ; aucune amélioration du niveau d’anxiété à la suite de l’entraînement n’a toutefois pu être mis en évidence. Nous pouvons en conclure que les données semblent encourageantes pour une future étude similaire où les participants seront cette fois-ci contrôlés sur le niveau d’anxiété.
