In this paper, we prove that two normal complex surface germs that are inner bilipschitz--but not necessarily orientation-preserving--homeomorphic, have in fact the same oriented topological type and the same minimal plumbing graph. Along the way, we show that the oriented homeomorphism type of an isolated complex surface singularity germ determines the oriented homeomorphism type of its link, providing a converse to the classical Conical Structure Theorem. To manage exceptions, software relies on a key architectural guarantee, precision: that exceptions appear to execute between instructions. However, this definition, dating back over 60 years, fundamentally assumes a sequential programmers model. Modern architectures such as Arm-A with programmer-observable relaxed behaviour make such a naive definition inadequate, and it is unclear exactly what guarantees programmers have on exception entry and exit. In this paper, we clarify the concepts needed to discuss exceptions in the relaxed-memory setting -- a key aspect of precisely specifying the architectural interface between hardware and software. We explore the basic relaxed behaviour across exception boundaries, and the semantics of external aborts, using Arm-A as a representative modern architecture. We identify an important problem, present yet unexplored for decades: pinning down what it means for exceptions to be precise in a relaxed setting. We describe key phenomena that any definition should account for. We develop an axiomatic model for Arm-A precise exceptions, tooling for axiomatic model execution, and a library of tests. Finally we explore the relaxed semantics of software-generated interrupts, as used in sophisticated programming patterns, and sketch how they too could be modelled.

This paper investigates the linear response of a series of spheroidal stellar clusters, the Kuzmin-Kutuzov St\"ackel family, which exhibit a continuous range of flattening and rotation, extending from an isochrone sphere to a Toomre disk. The method successfully replicates the growing modes previously identified in published $N$-body simulations. It relies on the efficiency of the matrix method to quantify systematically the effects of rotation and flattening on the eigenmodes of the galaxy. We identify two types of bi-symmetric instabilities for the flatter models - the so-called bending and bar-growing modes - the latter of which persists even for very round models. As anticipated, in its least unstable configurations, the system becomes flatter as its rotational speed increases. More realistic equilibria will be required to achieve a better match to the main sequence of fast-slow rotators. The corresponding code is made public., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures. We introduce a new concept -- termed "planarity" -- which aims to quantify planar structure in galaxy satellite systems without recourse to the number or thickness of planes. We use positions and velocities from the Gaia EDR3 to measure planarity in Milky Way (MW) satellites and the extent to which planes within the MW system are kinematically supported. We show that the position vectors of the MW satellites exhibit strong planarity but the velocity vectors do not, and that kinematic coherence cannot, therefore, be confirmed from current observational data. We then apply our methodology to NewHorizon, a high-resolution cosmological simulation, to compare satellite planarity in MW-like galaxies in a {\Lambda}CDM-based model to that in the MW satellite data. We demonstrate that kinematically supported planes are common in the simulation and that the observed planarity of MW satellites is not in tension with the standard {\Lambda}CDM paradigm.

We investigate when and how the relations of galaxy morphology and star forming activity with clustercentric radius become evident in galaxy clusters. We identify 162 galaxy clusters with total mass $M_{\rm tot}^{\rm cl} > 5 \times 10^{13} {\rm M}_\odot$ at $z = 0.625$ in the Horizon Run 5 (HR5) cosmological hydrodynamical simulation and study how the properties of the galaxies with stellar mass $M_\ast > 5 \times 10^9 {\rm M}_\odot$ near the cluster main progenitors have evolved in the past. Galaxies are classified into disk, spheroid, and irregular morphological types according to the asymmetry and Sersic index of their stellar mass distribution. We also classify galaxies into active and passive ones depending on their specific star-formation rate. We find that the morphology-clustercentric radius relation (MRR) emerges at $z \simeq 1.8$ as the fraction of spheroidal types exceeds 50% in the central region ($d \lesssim 0.1 R_{200}$). Galaxies outside the central region remain disk-dominated. Numerous encounters between galaxies in the central region seem to be responsible for the morphology transformation from disks to spheroids. We also find that the star formation activity-clustercentric radius relation emerges at an epoch different from that of MRR. At $z\simeq0.8$, passive galaxies start to dominate the intermediate radius region ($0.1\lesssim d/R_{200} \lesssim0.3$) and this "quenching region" grows inward and outward thereafter. The region dominated by early-type galaxies (spheroids and passive disks) first appears at the central region at $z\simeq 1.8$, expands rapidly to larger radii as the population of passive disks grows in the intermediate radii, and clusters are dominated by early types after $z\simeq 0.8$., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, ApJ accepted

We investigate the formation history of intrahalo light (IHL) using the high-resolution (~1 kpc), large-scale (~Gpc) cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, Horizon Run 5 (HR5). IHL particles are identified by carefully considering both their binding energies and positions with respect to the tidal radii of individual galaxies. By analyzing more than 1,200 galaxy groups and clusters with $\geq 10^{13} M_{\odot}$ and tracing their individual IHL particles back in time, we classify the origin of each IHL particle at each epoch based on the status of the originating galaxy into three categories: brightest halo galaxy (BHG) formation/merger, satellite galaxy stripping, and pre-processing. Our study reveals that the IHL production through BHG formation/merger is the predominant production channel, contributing over 60\% of the total IHL mass across all redshifts. The second most significant IHL production channel is pre-processing, providing more than 20\% in the final HR5 snapshot. Stripping is negligible at $z>4$ but becomes gradually more important as halos mature at $z<4$. Finally, we verify that IHL production through the disruption of dwarf galaxies and in-situ formation is negligible, contributing less than ~3\% and ~0.5\% to the total IHL production, respectively., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 14 pages, 11 figures

The formation pathways of lenticular galaxies (S0s) in field environments remain a matter of debate. We utilize the cosmological hydrodynamic simulation, NewHorizon, to investigate the issue. We select two massive star-formation quenched S0s as our main sample. By closely tracing their physical and morphological evolution, we identify two primary formation channels: mergers and counter-rotating gas accretion. The former induces central gas inflow due to gravitational and hydrodynamic torques, triggering active central star formation which quickly depletes the gas of the galaxy. Counter-rotating gas accretion overall has a similar outcome but more exclusively through hydrodynamic collisions between the pre-existing and newly-accreted gas. Both channels lead to S0 morphology, with gas angular momentum cancellation being a crucial mechanism. These formation pathways quench star formation on a short timescale (< Gyr) compared to the timescales of environmental effects. We study star formation (SF) quenching of satellite galaxies with $M_{*} > 10^7\,M_{\odot}$ within two low-mass groups ($M_{\rm vir}=10^{12.9}$ and $10^{12.7} \,M_{\odot}$) using the NewHorizon simulation. We confirm that satellite galaxies ($M_{*}\lesssim10^{10}\,M_{\odot}$) are more prone to quenching than their field counterparts. This quenched fraction decreases with increasing stellar mass, consistent with recent studies. Similar to the findings in cluster environments, we note a correlation between the orbital motions of galaxies within these groups and the phenomenon of SF quenching. Specifically, SF is suppressed at the group center, and for galaxies with $M_{*} > 10^{9.1}\,M_{\odot}$, there is often a notable rejuvenation phase following a temporary quenching period. The SF quenching at the group center is primarily driven by changes in star formation efficiency and the amount of gas available, both of which are influenced by hydrodynamic interactions between the interstellar medium and surrounding hot gas within the group. Conversely, satellite galaxies with $M_{*} < 10^{8.2}\,M_{\odot}$ experience significant gas removal within the group, leading to SF quenching. Our analysis highlights the complexity of SF quenching in satellite galaxies in group environments, which involves an intricate competition between the efficiency of star formation (which depends on the dynamical state of the gas) on the one hand, and the availability of cold dense gas on the other hand. We test whether Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) can be good tracers of high-z large-scale structures, using the Horizon Run 5 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We identify LAEs using the Ly{\alpha} emission line luminosity and its equivalent width, and LBGs using the broad-band magnitudes at z~2.4, 3.1, and 4.5. We first compare the spatial distributions of LAEs, LBGs, all galaxies, and dark matter around the filamentary structures defined by dark matter. The comparison shows that both LAEs and LBGs are more concentrated toward the dark matter filaments than dark matter. We also find an empirical fitting formula for the vertical density profile of filaments as a binomial power-law relation of the distance to the filaments. We then compare the spatial distributions of the samples around the filaments defined by themselves. LAEs and LBGs are again more concentrated toward their filaments than dark matter. We also find the overall consistency between filamentary structures defined by LAEs, LBGs, and dark matter, with the median spatial offsets that are smaller than the mean separation of the sample. Feedback from stars and active galactic nuclei (AGNs) primarily affects the formation and evolution of galaxies and the circumgalactic medium, leaving some kind of imprint on larger scales. Based on the {\sc Simba} hydrodynamical simulation suite and using the full set of Minkowski functionals (MFs), this study systematically analyses the time evolution of the global geometry and topology of the gas temperature, pressure, density (total, HI, and H$_2$), and the metallicity fields between redshifts $z=5$ and $z=0$. The MFs show that small-scale astrophysical processes are persistent and manifest on larger, up to tens of Mpc scales, highlighting the specific morphological signatures of the relevant feedback mechanisms on these scales in the last $\sim12$~Gyr. In qualitative terms, we were able establish a ranking that varies according to the field considered: stellar feedback mostly determines the morphology of the pressure and density fields and AGN jets are the primary origin of the morphology of the temperature and metallicity fields, while X-ray heating and AGN winds play the second most important role in shaping the geometry and topology of all the gaseous fields, except metallicity. Hence, the cosmic evolution of the geometry and topology of fields characterising the thermodynamical and chemical properties of the cosmic web offers complementary, larger scale constraints to galaxy formation models., Comment: Added references, corrected typos. The formation pathways of compact stellar systems (CSSs) are still under debate. We utilize the \NH\ simulation to investigate the origins of such objects in the field environment. We identified 55 CSS candidates in the simulation whose properties are similar to those of the observed ultra-compact dwarfs and compact ellipticals. All but two most massive objects (compact elliptical candidates) are a result of a short starburst. Sixteen are formed by tidal stripping, while the other 39 are intrinsically compact from their birth. The stripped objects originate from dwarf-like galaxies with a dark halo, but most of their dark matter is stripped through their orbital motion around a more massive neighbor galaxy. The 39 intrinsically compact systems are further divided into ``associated'' or ``isolated'' groups, depending on whether they were born near a massive dark halo or not. The isolated intrinsic compact objects (7) are born in a dark halo and their stellar properties are older and metal-poor compared to the associated counterparts (32). The stripped compact objects occupy a distinct region in the age-metallicity plane from the intrinsic compact objects. Metallicity offers a unique window into the baryonic history of the cosmos, being instrumental in probing evolutionary processes in galaxies between different cosmic environments. We aim to quantify the contribution of these environments to the scatter in the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) of galaxies. By analysing the galaxy distribution within the cosmic skeleton of the Horizon Run 5 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation at redshift $z = 0.625$, computed using a careful calibration of the T-ReX filament finder, we identify galaxies within three main environments: nodes, filaments and voids. We also classify galaxies based on the dynamical state of the clusters and the length of the filaments in which they reside. We find that the cosmic environment significantly contributes to the scatter in the MZR; in particular, both the gas metallicity and its average relative standard deviation increase when considering denser large-scale environments. The difference in the average metallicity between galaxies within relaxed and unrelaxed clusters is $\approx 0.1 \text{ dex}$, with both populations displaying positive residuals, $\delta Z_{g}$, from the averaged MZR. Moreover, the difference in metallicity between node and void galaxies accounts for $\approx 0.14 \, \text{dex}$ in the scatter of the MZR at stellar mass $M_{\star} \approx 10^{9.35}\,\text{M}_{\odot}$. Finally, both the average [O/Fe] in the gas and the galaxy gas fraction decrease when moving to higher large-scale densities in the simulation, suggesting that the cores of cosmic environments host, on average, older and more massive galaxies, whose enrichment is affected by a larger number of Type Ia Supernova events., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

We build a model to predict from first principles the properties of major mergers. We predict these from the coalescence of peaks and saddle points in the vicinity of a given larger peak, as one increases the smoothing scale in the initial linear density field as a proxy for cosmic time. To refine our results, we also ensure, using a suite of $\sim 400$ power-law Gaussian random fields smoothed at $\sim 30$ different scales, that the relevant peaks and saddles are topologically connected: they should belong to a persistent pair before coalescence. Our model allows us to (a) compute the probability distribution function of the satellite-merger separation in Lagrangian space: they peak at three times the smoothing scale; (b) predict the distribution of the number of mergers as a function of peak rarity: haloes typically undergo two major mergers ($>$1:10) per decade of mass growth; (c) recover that the typical spin brought by mergers: it is of the order of a few tens of percent., Comment: 12 pages, accepted to MNRAS; comments welcome

One intriguing approach for studying the dynamical evolution of galaxy clusters is to compare the spatial distributions among various components, such as dark matter, member galaxies, gas, and intracluster light (ICL). Utilizing the recently introduced Weighted Overlap Coefficient (WOC) \citep{2022ApJS..261...28Y}, we analyze the spatial distributions of components within 174 galaxy clusters ($M_{\rm tot}> 5 \times 10^{13} M_{\odot}$, $z=0.625$) at varying dynamical states in the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Horizon Run 5. We observe that the distributions of gas and the combination of ICL with the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) closely resembles the dark matter distribution, particularly in more relaxed clusters, characterized by the half-mass epoch. The similarity in spatial distribution between dark matter and BCG+ICL mimics the changes in the dynamical state of clusters during a major merger. Notably, at redshifts $>$ 1, BCG+ICL traced dark matter more accurately than the gas. Additionally, we examined the one-dimensional radial profiles of each component, which show that the BCG+ICL is a sensitive component revealing the dynamical state of clusters. We propose a new method that can approximately recover the dark matter profile by scaling the BCG+ICL radial profile. Furthermore, we find a recipe for tracing dark matter in unrelaxed clusters by including the most massive satellite galaxies together with BCG+ICL distribution. Combining the BCG+ICL and the gas distribution enhances the dark matter tracing ability. Our results imply that the BCG+ICL distribution is an effective tracer for the dark matter distribution, and the similarity of spatial distribution may be a useful probe of the dynamical state of a cluster., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Rayleigh-Levy flights have played a significant role in cosmology as simplified models for understanding how matter distributes itself under gravitational influence. These models also exhibit numerous remarkable properties that enable the prediction of a wide range of characteristics. Here, we derive the one and two point statistics of extreme points within Rayleigh-Levy flights spanning one to three dimensions, stemming directly from fundamental principles. In the context of the mean field limit, we provide straightforward closed-form expressions for Euler counts and their correlations, particularly in relation to their clustering behaviour over long distances. Additionally, quadratures allow for the computation of extreme value number densities. A comparison between theoretical predictions in 1D and Monte Carlo measurements shows remarkable agreement. Given the widespread use of Rayleigh-Levy processes, these comprehensive findings offer significant promise not only in astrophysics but also in broader applications beyond the field., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures

Dense systems of magnetic nanoparticles may exhibit dipolar collective behavior. However, two fundamental questions remain unsolved: i) whether the transition temperature may be affected by the particle anisotropy or it is essentially determined by the intensity of the interparticle dipolar interactions, and ii) what is the minimum ratio of dipole-dipole interaction ($E_\text{dd}$) to nanoparticle anisotropy ($K_{\text{ef}}V$, anisotropy $\times$ volume) energies necessary to crossover from individual to collective behavior. A series of particle assemblies with similarly intense dipolar interactions but widely varying anisotropy is studied. The $K_\text{ef}$ is tuned through different degrees of cobalt-doping in maghemite nanoparticles, resulting in a variation of nearly an order of magnitude. All the bare particle compacts display collective behavior, except the one made with the highest anisotropy particles, which presents ``marginal'' features. Thus, a threshold of $K_{\text{ef}} V/E_{\text{dd}} \approx 130$ to suppress collective behavior is derived, in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulations. This translates into a crossover value of $\approx 1.7$ for the easily accessible parameter $T_\text{MAX}$(interacting)$/T_\text{MAX}$(non-interacting) (ratio of the peak temperatures of the zero-field-cooled magnetization curves of interacting and dilute particle systems), which is successfully tested against the literature to predict the individual-like$/$collective behavior of any given interacting particle assembly comprising relatively uniform particles., Comment: 24 pages (proof version), 6 figures

The long-term relaxation of rotating, spherically symmetric globular clusters is investigated through an extension of the orbit averaged Chandrasekhar non-resonant formalism. A comparison is made with the long-term evolution of the distribution function in action space, measured from averages of sets of $N$-body simulations up to core collapse. The impact of rotation on in-plane relaxation is found to be weak. In addition, we observe a clear match between theoretical predictions and $N$-body measurements. For the class of rotating models considered, we find no strong gravo-gyro catastrophe accelerating core collapse. Both kinetic theory and simulations predict a reshuffling of orbital inclinations from overpopulated regions to underpopulated ones. This trend accelerates as the amount of rotation is increased. Yet, for orbits closer to the rotational plane, the non-resonant prediction does not reproduce numerical measurements. We provide an algorithm for computing an effective basis of homology of elliptic surfaces over the complex projective line on which integration of periods can be carried out. This allows the heuristic recovery of several algebraic invariants of the surface, notably the N\'eron-Severi lattice, the transcendental lattice, the Mordell-Weil group and the Mordell-Weil lattice. (Reduced) Using the recent cosmological high-resolution zoom-in simulations, NewHorizon and Galactica, in which the evolution of black hole spin is followed on the fly, we have tracked the cosmic history of a hundred of black holes (BHs) with a mass greater than 2x10^4 Ms. For each of them, we have studied the variations of the three dimensional angle (Psi) subtended between the BH spins and the angular momentum vectors of their host galaxies. The analysis of the individual evolution of the most massive BHs suggests that they are generally passing by three different regimes. First, for a short period after their birth, low mass BHs (<3x10^4 Ms) are rapidly spun up by gas accretion and their spin tends to be aligned with their host galaxy spin. Then follows a second phase in which the accretion of gas onto low mass BHs (<10^5 Ms) is quite chaotic and inefficient, reflecting the complex and disturbed morphologies of forming proto-galaxies at high redshifts. The variations of Psi are rather erratic during this phase and are mainly driven by the rapid changes of the direction of the galaxy angular momentum. Then, in a third and long phase, BHs are generally well settled in the center of galaxies around which the gas accretion becomes much more coherent (>10^5 Ms). In this case, the BH spins tend to be well aligned with the angular momentum of their host galaxy and this configuration is generally stable even though BH merger episodes can temporally induce misalignment. We have also derived the distributions of cos(Psi) at different redshifts and found that BHs and galaxy spins are generally aligned. Finally, based on a Monte Carlo method, we also predict statistics for the 2-d projected spin-orbit angles lambda. In particular, the distribution of lambda traces well the alignment tendency in the 3-d analysis.
