The objective of this paper is to assess the changes in soil physical and chemical properties resulting from the conversion of native forest to pasture and pasture to secondary forest in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Seven forest–pasture successional stages were identified using aerial photographs and satellite images acquired in 1957, 1978, and 2008. Successional stages were coded as FFF, FPF, PFF, PPF, FPP, FFP, and PPP, where the first, second, and third letters refer to the land uses (P, pasture; F, forest) practiced in 1957, 1978, and 2008, respectively. Soil samples were collected by layer at depths of 0–10, 10–20, 20–40, 40–60, 60–80, and 80–100 cm. Clay contents, soil bulk density (Db), macroporosity (MP), microporosity (mP), pH, Aluminum (Al), cation exchange capacity (CEC), calcium (Ca), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), total organic carbon (TOC) content, carbon stock, and δ13C abundance were quantified. Conversion of forest to pasture increased soil P, K, Ca, Db, and mP; and reduced MP, TOC content, and carbon stocks. The largest carbon stocks occurred in sites occupied by forests but previously used as pastures. Forest and pasture age influenced δ13C values, resulting in different isotopic signatures for different sites, confirming the transition from C3 to C4 plants. In 50-year-old pastures, about 66 % of soil TOC is still derived from the primary forest biomass.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the soil carbon stock (Stock C) and bulk density, the chemical and granulometric fractions of the organic matter and the isotopic signal of the soil δ13C in forest fragments and a mixed managed pasture (MMP). The study was carried out in the municipality of Pinheiral, State of Rio de Janeiro. The evaluated areas were: fragment of secondary forest in initial stage (SFIS) with 20 years of regeneration; fragment of secondary forest in intermediate stage (SFINS), with 25 years of regeneration; advanced secondary forest fragment (SFAS) with 60 years of regeneration and mixed pasture managed (MHP). The attributes related to soil carbon showed significant responses to the effects of land degradation / recovery processes, especially for the following indicators: total organic carbon, organic matter stock and particulate organic matter. No significant alterations for humic substances, and prevalence of the humin fraction was found. The most significant changes in δ13C values occurred up to the depth of 60 cm. In the grassland area, at 0-10 cm, 67% of the carbon stock comes from C4 plants, reducing in the subsequent layers. In SFINS and SFAS areas, at 0-10 cm, the contribution of C3 plants was significant, with minor changes in depth. RESUMO O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a densidade do solo e o estoque de carbono (EstC) do solo, as frações químicas e granulométricas da matéria orgânica e o sinal isotópico do δ13C do solo em fragmentos florestais e uma área de pastagem mista (MMP). O estudo foi realizado no município de Pinheiral, Estado do Rio de Janeiro. As áreas avaliadas foram: fragmento de floresta secundária em estádio inicial (FSEI) com 20 anos de regeneração; fragmento de floresta secundária em estádio intermediário (FSEI), com 25 anos de regeneração; fragmento de floresta secundária em estádio avançado (FSEA) com 60 anos de regeneração e uma pastagem mista manejada (PMM). Os atributos relacionados ao carbono do solo mostraram respostas significativas aos efeitos dos processos de degradação / recuperação da terra, especialmente para os seguintes indicadores: carbono orgânico total, matéria orgânica e matéria orgânica particulada. Não houve alterações significativas para as substâncias húmicas e foi encontrada a prevalência da fração humina. As mudanças mais significativas nos valores de 13C ocorreram até a profundidade de 60 cm. Na área de pastagem, a 0-10 cm, 67% do estoque de carbono vem de plantas C4, reduzindo nas camadas subseqüentes. Nas áreas FSEI e FSEA, em 0-10 cm, a contribuição das plantas C3 foi significativa, com pequenas alterações na profundidade.

The Brazilian savanna region (Cerrado) is one of the largest cultivated areas of the world. The different land uses in the region can effectively change the quantities of soil organic matter and the cycling of nutrients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of different land use management systems on the relationship between soil organic carbon and the soil chemical attributes of a Red Latosol (Oxisol) under Cerrado in Rio Verde (Goiás state). The treatments studied were native vegetation (cerradão), low-productivity pasture, conventional tillage with soybean, and no-tillage with soybean and maize. The smallest values for pH, available P, K, Ca and Mg were observed for the Cerradão treatment, even if the relatively high C levels increased the potential soil cation exchange capacity. The pasture, conventional tillage and no-tillage treatments showed higher K, Ca, Mg, available P, and S concentrations in the soil. In the areas where soil tillage did not take place and lime and fertilizers were applied superficially, the stratification of the soil organic carbon provides the retention of the elements near to the surface, with significance correlations with the soil chemicals attributes. A região do Cerrado representa uma das maiores áreas cultivada do mundo. Os diferentes usos do solo empregados nesta região podem modificar efetivamente as quantidades de matéria orgânica e alterar a ciclagem dos nutrientes no solo. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito de diferentes sistemas de manejo nas relações entre o carbono total e os atributos químicos de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico no Cerrado na região de Rio Verde, Estado de Goiás. As áreas estudadas foram cerradão, pastagem de baixa produtividade, plantio convencional de soja e plantio direto de soja com milho em sucessão. Os valores mais baixos no pH, cátions trocáveis, P-disponível e enxofre foram observados no Cerradão, contudo foram encontrados os maiores teores de C-total, que apresentaram correlação elevada com os teores de H+AL e a CTC potencial. Nas demais áreas, foram encontradas concentrações mais elevadas de cátions trocáveis, P-disponível e enxofre. Nas áreas onde não ocorreu o revolvimento do solo e a aplicação do corretivo e dos fertilizantes foi superficial, a estratificação dos teores de C-total promoveu a retenção dos elementos mais próximos à superfície, o que proporcionou correlações significativas com os atributos químicos do solo.

O óxido nitroso (N2O) é um importante gás do efeito estufa, com um alto potencial de provocar o aquecimento global e de vida longa na atmosfera. Grande parte dos fluxos naturais de N2O ocorre a partir dos oceanos, enquanto o restante é resultado principalmente da contribuição de processos microbiológicos (nitrificação e desnitrificação) ocorridos em solos de regiões tropicais. A disponibilidade de N para processos metabólicos dos microrganismos pode ser um importante fator no controle das emissões de N2O nesses solos. O presente trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de melhorar a compreensão acerca dos controles sobre os fluxos de N2O a partir de solos com pastagem na Amazônia. Foram investigados os efeitos da disponibilidade de N, C e umidade na emissão de N2O a partir do solo de uma pastagem submetida ou não a práticas para recuperação de sua produtividade. O estudo foi realizado em condições de laboratório, incubando o solo coletado nas seguintes situações: (a) Controle - solo com pastagem estabelecida em 1983 e com manejo tradicional, constituída de uma mistura de Brachiaria brinzantha e Panicum maximum, além da presença de uma variedade de plantas invasoras, e (b) Herbicida - dessecação total das plantas da pastagem estabelecida em 1983, para o plantio direto de arroz e posterior ressemeadura de braquiária. É oportuno ressaltar que as amostras de solo (camada de 0-5 cm) das áreas foram coletadas no terceiro dia após a aplicação do agroquímico. Para o estabelecimento das comparações e compreensão dos controles nos fluxos de N2O do solo, foram adicionados ao solo para incubação: nitrato, dextrose e água; além do uso de acetileno para bloquear a oxidação do N2O a N2, estimando, assim, a proporção de N2 que foi emitido do solo. Os maiores fluxos foram observados quando o nitrato foi acrescentado ao solo sob condições de alta umidade. A adição de dextrose (fonte de C) elevou os fluxos de forma mais intensa no solo que recebeu aplicação de herbicida, cuja disponibilidade de N também era maior. Com a aplicação de acetileno foi possível observar que grande parte do N perdido sob formas gasosas ocorre como N2. Desse modo, o processo de desnitrificação mostrou-se dominante nos fluxos de N2O a partir do solo da pastagem estudada, enquanto o N foi o fator principal no controle desses fluxos. Nitrous Oxide (N2O) plays an important role in the greenhouse effect, owing to its high global warming potential and a long half-life in the atmosphere. A large portion of the natural N2O flux is oceanic and the remaining results mainly from the contribution of microbiological processes (nitrification and denitrification) that occur in tropical soils. The availability of nitrogen (N) for metabolic processes by microorganisms may be an important factor controlling N2O in such soils. The goal of this study was to improve the understanding of mechanisms controlling N2O fluxes from soils under pasture in the Amazon. We investigated the effects of N and carbon (C) availability, and soil moisture on N2O emission from two different pastures (with or without treatments for recovery of productivity). The study was developed under laboratory conditions by incubating soil samples from the following pastures: (a) Control - Soil from a traditionally-managed pasture established in 1983 consisting of a mixture of Brachiaria brizantha and Panicum maximum, besides a type of weed; and (b) Herbicide treated - total desiccation of pasture established in 1983 in preparation for cultivation of no-till rice and posterior grass replanting. It is important to emphasize that soil samples (0-5 cm depth) were collected on the third day after herbicide application. To compare and understand N2O fluxes, we added nitrate, dextrose and water to the soil before incubation and used acetylene to block N2O oxidation to N2, in order to estimate the N2 emitted from the soil. The highest fluxes were observed when nitrate was added to the soil under high moisture conditions. Dextrose (C source) addition increased fluxes at more extent in the soil from the pasture that received herbicide application and also displayed higher N availability. With acetylene application it was possible to observe that a large portion of N lost in gaseous forms occurs as N2. Thus, in the studied pasture the denitrification process appeared to be dominated by N2O soil fluxes and N was the main factor controlling these fluxes.

Neste trabalho teve-se como objetivo testar o modelo CENTURY para simular os efeitos das mudanças de uso da terra nos teores de carbono no solo e na produção primária líquida na bacia do rio Piracicaba, SP. O modelo foi parametrizado e as simulações foram realizadas considerando-se áreas de florestas, pastagens e cana-de-açúcar, dada a sua importância econômica. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a alteração do uso/cobertura do solo provoca a diminuição do estoque de carbono do solo. As simulações realizadas na transição de uma floresta para cana-de-açúcar indicaram um decréscimo de 28% no estoque de carbono nos primeiros 12 anos, e diminuição de 42% com 50 anos de cultivo do solo com essa gramínea. Na simulação da transição de uma floresta para pasto, seguida do cultivo da cana-de-açúcar, verificou-se que na primeira mudança (floresta-pastagem) a perda de carbono foi de 24%, enquanto na segunda alteração (pastagem-cana) a perda foi de 22%. Com relação à produção primária, os resultados obtidos de floresta (6,6 t ha-1 ano-1), cana-de-açúcar (77, 82, 80 t ha-1 ano-1) e pasto (6,5 t ha-1 ano-1), mostraram-se similares aos valores observados no campo por outros autores. The objective of this study was to test adequability of the CENTURY model to simulate the effects of land use changes on soil carbon content and net primary production to specific subtropical Brazilian environmental conditions. After parameterization, simulations were performed for forested areas, pasture and sugarcane cultures which have economical importance and representative areal extension in the Piracicaba River basin, São Paulo State, Brazil. The results obtained indicate that changes in use/cover from forest to agricultural practices resulted in lower soil carbon stocks. The simulations of the transition from forest to sugarcane indicated a decrease of 28% in soil carbon stocks for the first 12 years and 42% for 50 years of sugarcane cultivation. The simulation of the transition from forest to pasture and then to sugarcane resulted in a 24% loss of soil carbon stock for the first transition (forest-pasture) and of 22% for the second one (pasture-sugar-cane). The net primary production results obtained for forest (6.6 ton ha-1 yr-1), sugarcane (77, 82, 80 ton ha-1 yr-1) and pasture (6.5 ton ha-1 yr-1) were similar to those observed by other authors in field measurements.

Avaliou-se a decomposição e liberação de nutrientes da palhada de cana-de-açúcar colhida mecanicamente sem prévia despalha a fogo. A palhada foi amostrada logo após a colheita da cana, em agosto de 1996, e antes da colheita seguinte, realizada em agosto de 1997. Após um ano de permanência da palhada no campo, verificou-se uma redução de massa de aproximadamente 20%, originária, em sua maior parte, do conteúdo celular e da hemicelulose. Dos carboidratos estruturais, somente a hemicelulose apresentou decomposição. A porcentagem de liberação dos nutrientes K, Ca e Mg, em relação ao total contido na palhada foi de 85, 44 e 39%, respectivamente. A mineralização do N da palhada foi pouco expressiva (18%), o que resultou em diferença estatisticamente não-significativa entre os conteúdos de N da palhada recém colhida e da remanescente.
