Abstract

The development of novel platforms and techniques for emerging "Big Data" applications requires the availability of real-life datasets for data-driven experiments, which are however out of reach for academic research in most cases as they are typically proprietary. A possible solution is to use synthesized datasets that reflect patterns of real ones in order to ensure high quality experimental findings. A first step in this direction is to use inverse mining techniques such as inverse frequent itemset mining (IFM) that consists of generating a transactional database satisfying given support constraints on the itemsets in an input set, that are typically the frequent ones. This paper introduces an extension of IFM, called many-sorted IFM, where the schemes for the datasets to be generated are those typical of Big Tables as required in emerging big data applications, e.g., social network analytics., Comment: 14 pages

Abstract

IntroductionIn luminal-like early breast cancer (BC), the lack of Progesterone Receptor (PR) expression generally correlates with more aggressive behavior but the clinical validity of low PR levels remains a debated issue.MethodsThe main aim of this retrospective analysis was to assess the survival outcome (Breast cancer specific survival, BCSS) in a cohort of 687 luminal-like HER2 negative early BC patients treated at our Institutions from January 2000 to December 2018, using a sub-classification of tumors in subgroup 1 (PR high/Ki67 low), subgroup 2 (PR high/Ki67 high), subgroup 3 (PR low/Ki67 low), subgroup 4 (PR low/Ki67 high) according to PR and Ki67 values.ResultsAt a median follow-up of 7 years, BCSS rates were 96.3%, 89%, 86.8% and 85% in the subgroup 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively. Overall, a statistically significant difference in BCSS rates was observed among the 4 subgroups (p=0.0036). On univariate analysis, post-menopause, older age (≥ 50 years), low PR and high Ki67 expression, poorly differentiated grade and size ≥ 2 cm as well as luminal B-like tumors (subgroups 2, 3, 4) were significantly associated with a worse BCSS. Multivariate analysis identified grade, size and subgroup classification of BC as independent prognostic markers of poorer outcome. In particular, subgroups 4, 3 and 2 displayed a significantly higher risk of BC-related death (HR=4.11; p=0.008; HR=3.43; p=0-007; HR=2.57; p=0.020, respectively) when compared to subgroup 1.ConclusionsOur results support the usefulness of PR and Ki67 levels as prognostic markers, corroborating their crucial role in the decision-making process of patients with luminal-like HER2 negative early BC. Clinical application of these parameters should be assessed prospectively.

Abstract

The wind power production spreading, also aided by the transition from constant to variable speed operation, involves the development of efficient control systems to improve the effectiveness of power production systems. This paper presents a data-driven design methodology able to generate a Takagi--Sugeno-Kang (TSK) fuzzy model for maximum energy extraction from variable speed wind turbines. In order to obtain the TSK model, fuzzy clustering methods for partitioning the input-output space, combined with genetic algorithms, and recursive least-squares optimization methods for model parameter adaptation are used. The implemented TSK fuzzy model, as confirmed by some simulation results on a doubly fed induction generator connected to a power system, exhibits high speed of computation, low memory occupancy, fault tolerance, and learning capability. Abstract

Regulators are aiming to incentivize developers and Distribution Network Operators to connect distributed generation (DG) to improve network environmental performance and efficiency. A key question is whether these incentives will encourage both parties to connect DG. Here, multiobjective optimal power flow is used to simulate how the parties' incentives affect their choice of DG capacity within the limits of the existing network. Using current U.K. incentives as a basis, this paper explores the costs, benefits and tradeoffs associated with DG in terms of connection, losses and, in a simple fashion, network deferral. Abstract

increasing availability of Internet accessible services driven by the di usion of connected devices. The consequent exposition to cyber-threats demands for suitable methodologies, techniques and tools allowing to adequately handle issues arising in such a complex domain. Most Intrusion Detection Systems are capable of detecting many attacks, but cannot provide a clear idea to the analyst because of the huge number of false alerts generated by these systems. This weakness in the IDS has led to the emergence of many methods in which to deal with these alerts, minimize them and highlight the real attacks. Furthermore, experience shows that the inter- pretation of the alerts usually requires more than the single messages provided by the sensors, so there is a need for techniques that can analyse the alerts within the context in which they have been generated. This might require the ability to correlate them with some other contextual information provided by other devices. Using synthetic data to design, implement and test these techniques its not fair and reliable because the variety and unpredictability of the real world data. On the other hand retrieve these information from real world networks is not easy (and sometimes impossible) due to privacy and con dential restrictions. Virtual Environments, Software De ned Systems and Software De ned Net- work will play a critical role in many cyber-security related aspects like the assessment of newly devised intrusion detection techniques, the generation of real world like logs, the evaluation of skills of cyber-defence team members and the evaluation of the disruptive e ects caused by the di usion of new malware. This thesis proposes, among other things, a novel domain-speci c platform, named SmallWorld, aimed to easily design, build and deploy realistic com- puter network scenarios achieved by the immersion of real systems into a software de ned virtual environment, enriched by Software De ned Agents put in charge of reproducing users or bot behaviours. Additionally, to provide validation and performance evaluation of the proposed platform, a number of Scenarios (including penetration testing laboratories, IoT and domotics net- works and a reproduction of the most common services on Internet like a DNS server, a MAIL server, a booking service and a payment gateway) have been developed inside SmallWorld. Over time the platform has been rewrit- ten and radically improved leading to the birth of Hacking Square. This new version is currently available on-line and freely accessible from anyone. The impact of this research prototype has been demonstrated, above all, during the course of "Metodi e Strumenti per la Sicurezza Informatica" for the mas- ter degree in Cyber Security at DIMES, University of Calabria. In fact, the platform has been employed to build the laboratory of the course as an in cloud service for students (including all the material to conduct exercises and assignments) and to organize a, practical, Capture the Flag (CTF) like nal test. Finally, the platform is under the attention of Consorzio Interuniver- sitario per l'Informatica (CINI), as it could be used to manage and deploy training content for the CyberChallenge 2018.
