10. High-pressure Ca metasomatism of metabasites (Mont Avic, Western Alps): insights into fluid–rock interaction during subduction.

Abstract

The study of rock chemistry is a milestone in understanding fluid–rock interactions and fluid migration in subduction zones. When combined with thermodynamic models, it can provide direct insight into fluid composition, metasomatic reactions, and pressure–temperature (P – T) conditions, as well as their role in rock deformation. Here, a shear zone – located in the Mont Avic area of the Zermatt-Saas zone (Western Alps) – is analyzed. This shear zone consists of several blocks of different lithotypes, including a Ca-rich metasomatite block embedded in a serpentinite mylonitic matrix, and structurally underlies a coherent eclogitic mafic unit. This work aims to estimate the pressure–temperature conditions of the Ca-rich metasomatism and the amount of fluid involved. The brecciation exhibits mosaic breccia textures with clasts comprising ∼80 vol % of garnet, together with omphacite, epidote, titanite, rutile, and apatite hosted in an omphacite matrix. Quantitative chemical mapping of the garnet reveals primary garnet cores with embayment and lobate edges with a chemical composition similar to unaltered reference eclogite garnet. These primary garnet cores are overlain by Ca-rich metasomatic garnet rims with oscillatory chemical zoning. The oscillatory chemical zoning, together with the morphology of the primary garnet cores, suggests repeated influxes of external Ca-rich fluid that destabilized the primary garnet cores and promoted the growth of Ca-rich rims. Mass balance calculations between precursor metabasite and Ca-metasomatite indicate multiple fluid sources involving dehydrated serpentinite, calcic metasediments, and metabasites with time-integrated fluid fluxes calculated between 11.5×103 and 5.5×104 m fluid3 m rock-2 , consistent with channelized fluid flow in an open system. Thermodynamic modeling of garnet from unbrecciated and non-metasomatized metabasites – from the Savoney eclogitic mafic unit – indicates peak metamorphic conditions of 2.5±0.1 GPa and 535±40 °C, consistent with regional estimates. Pressure–temperature conditions of metasomatism were constrained using P – X and T – X phase modeling (where X represents changes in bulk CaO and Na 2 O composition) between 2.6–2.2 GPa and 570–500 °C, showing that Ca-rich fluid percolation occurred close to the metamorphic peak (i.e., prograde to the peak or early exhumation path). 25. The ‘corkscrew’ sign: an indirect MRI hint for intracranial venous hypertension.

Abstract

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) are intracranial vascular abnormalities in which one or more meningeal arteries shunt into a venous structure, either a cortical vein or a venous sinus, causing cerebral venous hypertension and risk of haemorrhage. Imaging diagnosis and characterisation are of paramount importance to grade the haemorrhagic risk and direct management. Non-invasive vascular neuroimaging might pose a diagnostic suspicion, but invasive catheter digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is usually required. We present the case of a patient with an atypical acute cerebral haemorrhage in which admission imaging with CT angiography (CTA) and MR angiography (MRA) was unremarkable, while advanced morphological MR with susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) revealed specific findings suggesting unilateral chronic venous hypertension. Successively, DSA detected a small DAVF that was treated with endovascular embolization. This case report raises awareness on subtle but important conventional imaging findings that suggest the presence of an AV shunt, to avoid misdiagnosis and delayed treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background During the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wave, an unprecedented number of patients with respiratory failure due to a new, highly contagious virus needed hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The aim of the present study was to describe the communication and visiting policies of Italian intensive care units (ICUs) during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave and national lockdown and compare these data with prepandemic conditions. Methods A national web-based survey was conducted among 290 Italian hospitals. Each ICU (active between February 24 and May 31, 2020) was encouraged to complete an individual questionnaire inquiring the hospital/ICU structure/organization, communication/visiting habits and the role of clinical psychology prior to, and during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. Results Two hundred and nine ICUs from 154 hospitals (53% of the contacted hospitals) completed the survey (202 adult and 7 pediatric ICUs). Among adult ICUs, 60% were dedicated to COVID-19 patients, 21% were dedicated to patients without COVID-19 and 19% were dedicated to both categories (Mixed). A total of 11,102 adult patients were admitted to the participating ICUs during the study period and only approximately 6% of patients received at least one visit. Communication with family members was guaranteed daily through an increased use of electronic devices and was preferentially addressed to the same family member. Compared to the prepandemic period, clinical psychologists supported physicians more often regarding communication with family members. Fewer patients received at least one visit from family members in COVID and mixed-ICUs than in non-COVID ICUs, l (0 [0–6]%, 0 [0–4]% and 11 [2–25]%, respectively, p Conclusions Visiting policies of Italian ICUs dedicated to adult patients were markedly altered during the first COVID-19 wave. Remote communication was widely adopted as a surrogate for family meetings. New strategies to favor a family-centered approach during the current and future pandemics are warranted.

Abstract

Background: During the first coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic wave, an unprecedented number of patients with respiratory failure due to a new, highly contagious virus needed hospitalization and intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The aim of the present study was to describe the communication and visiting policies of Italian intensive care units (ICUs) during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave and national lockdown and compare these data with prepandemic conditions. Methods: A national web-based survey was conducted among 290 Italian hospitals. Each ICU (active between February 24 and May 31, 2020) was encouraged to complete an individual questionnaire inquiring the hospital/ICU structure/organization, communication/visiting habits and the role of clinical psychology prior to, and during the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. Results: Two hundred and nine ICUs from 154 hospitals (53% of the contacted hospitals) completed the survey (202 adult and 7 pediatric ICUs). Among adult ICUs, 60% were dedicated to COVID-19 patients, 21% were dedicated to patients without COVID-19 and 19% were dedicated to both categories (Mixed). A total of 11,102 adult patients were admitted to the participating ICUs during the study period and only approximately 6% of patients received at least one visit. Communication with family members was guaranteed daily through an increased use of electronic devices and was preferentially addressed to the same family member. Compared to the prepandemic period, clinical psychologists supported physicians more often regarding communication with family members. Fewer patients received at least one visit from family members in COVID and mixed-ICUs than in non-COVID ICUs, l (0 [0-6]%, 0 [0-4]% and 11 [2-25]%, respectively, p < 0.001). Abstract

Hydrothermal veins and altered feldspar are evidence for fluid circulation in granitic rocks in the continental crust. The hydrothermal alteration of feldspar affects the deformation behavior of granitoids, especially if it occurs before orogeny. Geochronology can establish the timing of fluid circulation to determine if this fluid-driven alteration plays a role in crustal deformation. Although existing dating techniques cannot be applied to feldspar alteration directly, absolute ages of fluid circulation can be obtained from hydrothermal veins. We combined U-Pb geochronology and hydrogen isotope data (δD) from epidote [Ca2Al2(Al,Fe3+) Si3O12(OH)] to unravel the hydration of post-Variscan granitoids in the Alpine orogen. The recent protocol for epidote U-Pb dating proves for the first time that fluids of meteoric origin infiltrated the granitoids in Permian times by exploiting synrift faults, consistent with the δD values of the epidote-forming fluids. This hydration event caused at least some degree of feldspar hydration and weakening of the granitic rocks ~260 m.y. before their pervasive structural overprint by the Alpine orogeny. The preservation of Permian U-Pb ages despite Alpine orogenic processes confirms epidote as a powerful tool with which to unveil pre-orogenic hydration events in metagranitoids. Our analytical approach broadens insights into the water cycle in the middle continental crust in orogens.

46. Pressure–temperature–time evolution of subducted crust revealed by complex garnet zoning (Theodul Glacier Unit, Switzerland).

Abstract

Collisional orogens commonly include mono‐metamorphic and poly‐metamorphic units, and their different evolution can be difficult to recognize and reconcile. The Theodul Glacier Unit (TGU) in the Western Alps consists of an association of metasedimentary and metamafic rocks embedded within the Zermatt‐Saas tectonic unit. In spite of recent petrological studies, it remains unclear whether these rocks underwent one or multiple metamorphic cycles. In this study, different lithologies from the TGU unit (mafic schist, mafic granofels, and chloritoid schist) were investigated for petrography, quantitative compositional mapping of garnet, thermodynamic modelling, and Lu–Hf garnet dating. The data reveal a coherent mono‐metamorphic history with a β‐shaped pressure–temperature (P–T) path characteristic of oceanic subduction. Garnet Lu–Hf ages yield a restricted garnet crystallization time window between 50.3 and 48.8 Ma (±0.5%, 2SD). A prograde metamorphic stage recorded in garnet cores yields conditions of 490 ± 15℃ and 1.75 ± 0.05 GPa. Maximum pressure conditions of 2.65 ± 0.10 GPa and 580 ± 15℃ were reached at 50.3 ± 0.3 Ma. Initial exhumation was rapid and led to isothermal decompression to 1.50 ± 0.10 GPa within 1 Ma. This decompression was associated with lawsonite breakdown in mafic schist and in mafic granofels, causing intense fluid–rock interaction within and between different lithologies. This process is recorded in garnet textures and trace element patterns, and in the major element composition of K‐white mica. Initial exhumation was followed by re‐heating of ~30℃ at a pressure of 1.50 ± 0.10 GPa. Perturbation of the subduction‐zone thermal structure may be related to upwelling of hot asthenospheric mantle material and transient storage of the unit at the crust–mantle boundary. Abstract

The Cima Lunga unit in the Central Alps is dominated by quartzofeldspathic gneisses with subordinate mafic, ultramafic, and metacarbonate rocks. Only mafic and ultramafic lithologies were thought to preserve clear evidence of Alpine high‐P metamorphism. This led to the questions of whether the different rock types were subducted and exhumed as a coherent unit or underwent different pressure–temperature (P–T) histories. New petrological and geochemical data from a metapelite associated with garnet peridotite from Cima di Gagnone (Cima Lunga unit, Switzerland) were obtained using major and trace element mapping. Complex zoning patterns in garnet and white mica are observed. In particular, high Ti content in phengite and increasing P, Zr, and HREE contents in pyrope‐rich garnet indicate that this metapelite underwent high‐P and high‐T (HP–HT) metamorphism involving fluid‐fluxed partial melting. A P–T path is reconstructed by combining textural analysis with petrological–geochemical data and thermodynamic simulations. We show that the mineral record preserves an evolution from prograde to HP–HT peak conditions (2.7 ± 0.1 GPa and 800℃) followed by near‐isobaric cooling (~2.5 GPa and 700–750℃) prior to decompression (1.0 GPa and ~620℃). The reconstructed P–T path suggests that the studied metapelites were subducted to depths where the slab gets heated by proximity to asthenospheric mantle related to slab break‐off. This heating resulted in the dehydration of chlorite‐ to garnet peridotite and the liberated fluids triggered partial melting in the associated metapelites, which might have favoured the fast exhumation of the entire Cima Lunga unit. Metapelites and garnet peridotite from Cima di Gagnone underwent a common prograde to peak and retrograde P–T path without significant tectonic pressure difference between the different lithologies, and deviation from lithostatic pressure is excluded. Lastly, the peak metamorphic conditions of metapelite from Cima di Gagnone are comparable with P–T estimates of ultramafic lithologies from the southern Adula nappe and the Dascio Bellinzona zone, thus opening new scenarios for the geodynamic interpretation of the Central Alps. 48. Vein-type graphite deposits in Sri Lanka: The ultimate fate of granulite fluids

Abstract

Hydrothermal graphite vein deposits hosted in granulite facies metamorphic rocks in Sri Lanka are unique because of their large size and high crystallinity. In this paper, we present a review of the structural-metamorphic setting of the graphite veins and of the graphite stable carbon isotope data, and we present fluid inclusion data from quartz in the graphite veins and in the host rocks from several graphite deposits in Sri Lanka. The studied host rocks show decompression rims of plagioclase and orthopyroxene after garnet. The quartz in these decompression rim textures comprise, in order of abundance, high-salinity brine, H2O-CO2, and low-salinity aqueous fluid inclusions. The brine fluid is responsible for metasomatic features observed in garnet decompression rims, including feldspar leaching and re-precipitation. Quartz cogenetic with vein graphite comprises, in order of abundance, low-salinity aqueous, CO2, high-salinity brine, and H2O-CO2 fluid inclusions. Published graphite carbon isotope data indicates a dominant mantle source, mixed with small amounts of carbon-bearing fluids of supracrustal origin. We propose that large quantities of mantle-derived CO2 fluid are temporarily stored in the lower crust during the final stage of Gondwana supercontinent amalgamation. The CO2 is subsequently released from the lower crustal rocks during decompression associated with fast uplift. The graphite veins in Sri Lanka were formed during this uplift stage and represent as such paleofluid channels. In this respect, they are comparable to the quartz‑carbonates mega-shear zones found in other granulite terranes. Depending on the redox conditions, mantle CO2 and brines may either result in the formation of graphite or quartz‑carbonate veins.

49. Subducting serpentinites release reduced, not oxidized, aqueous fluids

Abstract

The observation that primitive arc magmas are more oxidized than mid-ocean-ridge basalts has led to the paradigm that slab-derived fluids carry SO2 and CO2 that metasomatize and oxidize the sub-arc mantle wedge. We combine petrography and thermodynamic modelling to quantify the oxygen fugacity (fO2) and speciation of the fluids generated by serpentinite dehydration during subduction. Silicate-magnetite assemblages maintain fO2 conditions similar to the quartz-fayalite-magnetite (QFM) buffer at fore-arc conditions. Sulphides are stable under such conditions and aqueous fluids contain minor S. At sub-arc depth, dehydration occurs under more reducing conditions producing aqueous fluids carrying H2S. This finding brings into question current models in which serpentinite-derived fluids are the cause of oxidized arc magmatism and has major implications for the global volatile cycle, as well as for redox processes controlling subduction zone geodynamics., Scientific Reports, 9, ISSN:2045-2322

50. Textural and Geochemical Evidence for Magnetite Production upon Antigorite Breakdown During Subduction.

Abstract

Magnetite stability in ultramafic systems undergoing subduction plays a major role in controlling redox states of the fluids liberated upon dehydration reactions, as well as of residual rocks. Despite their relevance for the evaluation of the redox conditions, the systematics and geochemistry of oxide minerals have remained poorly constrained in subducted ultramafic rocks. Here, we present a detailed petrological and geochemical study of magnetite in hydrous ultramafic rocks from Cerro del Almirez (Spain). Our results indicate that prograde to peak magnetite, ilmenite–hematite solid solution minerals, and sulfides coexist in both antigorite-serpentinite and chlorite-harzburgite at c. 670 °C and 1·6 GPa, displaying successive crystallization stages, each characterized by specific mineral compositions. In antigorite-serpentinite, magnetite inherited from seafloor hydration and recrystallized during subduction has moderate Cr (Cr2O3 < 10 wt%) and low Al and V concentrations. In chlorite-harzburgite, polygonal magnetite is in textural equilibrium with olivine, orthopyroxene, chlorite, pentlandite, and ilmenite–hematite solid solution minerals. The Cr2O3 contents of this magnetite are up to 19 wt%, higher than any magnetite data obtained for antigorite-serpentinite, along with higher Al and V, derived from antigorite breakdown, and lower Mn concentrations. This polygonal magnetite displays conspicuous core to rim zoning as recognized on elemental maps. Cr–V–Al–Fe3+ mass-balance calculations, assuming conservative behavior of total Fe3+ and Al, were employed to model magnetite compositions and modes in the partially dehydrated product chlorite-harzburgite starting from antigorite-serpentinite, as well as in the serpentinite protolith starting from the chlorite-harzburgite. The model results disagree with measured Cr and V compositions in magnetite from antigorite-serpentinites and chlorite-harzburgites. This indicates that these two rock types had different initial bulk compositions and thus cannot be directly compared. Our mass-balance analysis also reveals that new magnetite formation is required across the antigorite-breakdown reaction to account for the mass conservation of fluid-immobile elements such as Cr–V–Al–Fe3+. Complete recrystallization and formation of new magnetite in equilibrium with peak olivine (Mg# 89–91), chlorite (Mg# ∼95), orthopyroxene (Mg# 90–91), and pentlandite buffer the released fluid to redox conditions of ∼1 log unit above the quartz–fayalite–magnetite buffer. This is consistent with the observation that the Fe–Ti solid solution minerals (hemo-ilmenite and ilmeno-hematite) crystallized as homogeneous phases and exsolved upon exhumation and cooling. We conclude that antigorite-dehydration reaction fluids carry only a moderate redox budget and therefore may not be the only reason why the magmas are comparatively oxidized. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
