Abstract

To evaluate the change over time of vision-related quality of life (QoL) and glaucoma symptoms in a population of newly-diagnosed primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. Multicenter, prospective study. Consecutive newly-diagnosed POAG patients were enrolled and followed-up for one year. Follow-up visits were scheduled at 6 and 12 months from baseline. At each visit, vision-related QoL and glaucoma-related symptoms were assessed by the means of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) and the Glaucoma Symptom Scale (GSS), respectively. Trends over time for NEI-VFQ-25 and GSS scores were evaluated with longitudinal linear mixed models. One-hundred seventy-eight patients were included in the analysis. At baseline, early to moderate glaucoma stages were associated with higher scores for most GSS and NEI-VFQ-25 items, while lower best-corrected visual acuity was associated with lower scores for 4 of the 12 NEI-VFQ-25 items. Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this article was to evaluate the potential association between sociodemographic factors with clinical characteristics, vision-related quality of life (QoL), and glaucoma-related symptoms scores in a large cohort of primary open-angle glaucoma patients. Materials and Methods: Multicenter, cross-sectional study involving academic and nonacademic centers. Previously diagnosed primary open-angle glaucoma patients aged >18 years were enrolled. At baseline, information on demographic characteristics, social, medical and ocular history, clinical presentation and treatments was collected. Vision-related QoL was evaluated by means of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25), while glaucoma-related symptoms were evaluated using the Glaucoma Symptom Scale (GSS) questionnaire. The associations between sociodemographic factors with clinical characteristics (mean deviation, pattern standard deviation, best-corrected visual acuity), NEI-VFQ-25, and GSS scores were evaluated by means of univariate and multivariate general linear models. Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between visual field (VF) loss, vision-related quality of life (QoL) and glaucoma-related symptoms in a large cohort of primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. POAG patients with or without VF defects or “glaucoma suspect” patients were considered eligible. QoL was assessed using the validated versions of the 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ-25) and glaucoma-related symptoms were assessed using the Glaucoma Symptom Scale (GSS). Patients were classified as having VF damage in one eye (VFD-1), both eyes (VFD-2), or neither eye (VFD-0). 3227 patients were enrolled and 2940 were eligible for the analysis. 13.4% of patients were classified in the VFD-0, 23.7% in the VFD-1, and 62.9% in the VFD-2 group. GSS visual symptoms domain (Func-4) and GSS non-visual symptoms domain (Symp-6) scores were similar for the VFD-0 and VFD-1 groups (p = 0.133 and p = 0.834 for Func-4 and Symp-6, respectively). Abstract

Introduction: A healthy diet is recognized as an important strategy for promoting health as an essential part of non-pharmacological therapy of various health problems., Objective: To analyze the reported advice for the intake of salt, sugar and fat for the Brazilian adults living in urban areas., Methodology: National-based cross-sectional study with 12,402 adults interviewed in 100 Brazilian cities., Results: The most prevalent advice was to low fat intake (38%), followed by the advice to low salt and sugar intake (36%) and sugar (29%). The percentage of receiving different advice was similar and more common among women, older people, those with a partner, higher economic class, former smokers, active and in person with physician diagnoses of hypertension, diabetes and overweight. People with white skin color received more advice to eat healthy food, except for the orientation to low salt intake., Conclusion: The results show a low prevalence of advice, which configures a missed opportunity to prevent health problems. Although dietary counseling should not be understood only as the transmission of advice regarding some nutrients, it is important to develop actions in order to qualify services and health professionals, allowing the population to have access to qualified information about the benefits of having healthy lifestyles.

Little information, however, is usually available on how is the behavior of obesity at community level., Purpose: To evaluate prevalence of obesity in Pelotas city (RS), and to identify factors associated with obesity., Methods: This population-based survey measured the frequency of obesity and his risk factors in a mid-sized Brazilian city by studying a cluster sample of 1657 adults aged 20-69 years. The independent variables studied were: sex, color of the skin, age in years, physical activity, pattern of alcohol consumption, cigarette smoke habit, scholarity and social class. Queletet index at the cut point of 30.0 kg/m2 was adopted to define obesity according the World Health Organization recommendation., Results: Obesity prevalence of 15.3% in men and 23.2% between women was encountered in this sample. All studied variables showed some influence on Quetelet index except the color of the skin. Among the studied factors low level of scholarity seems to be most important determinant of obesity after multivariate analysis., Conclusion: The high prevalence of obesity is associated with advanced age, female gender and low level of scholarity. The possibility of intervention makes the last one more important than the first and second. Other studies about obesity are needed in order to produce a better understanding of the problem.

Abstract

Knowledge of the prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension and its risk factors can be of great value to health policy and planning activities. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Pelotas, southern Brazil, for the purpose of discovering the prevalence of hypertension and selected risk factors. A representative sample of 1,675 adults were studied. The prevalence of hypertension was of 19.8%. The following variables were significantly associated with hypertension after adjustment for confounding variables: black race, advanced age, low educational level, paternal and maternal history of hypertension, use of additional salt on cooked foods, and obesity. The strong association between social class and hypertension found by bivariant analysis was reduced in the multivariate analysis after adjustment for age, sex and race.

Abstract

Recent studies reported in the literature have repeatedly pointed out the utility of imidazole derivatives, one of which is bifonazole, in the therapy of seborrheic dermatitis (SD). The cause of this pathological situation is still under discussion but the therapeutic success obtained with antimycotics speaks in favor of the pathogenetic importance of Malassezia ovale in this context. There is a high frequency of SD type complaints in patients with HIV infections in whom immune defenses against various pathogens, including yeasts, are deficient. We therefore verified the clinical efficacy of 1% bifonazole cream on 15 subjects with SD of the face, 9 of whom were affected with lymphadenopathy syndrome/AIDS-related complex (LAS/ARC). The treatment was administered over a four-week period and gave good results in 12 patients. The best results, however, were observed in those suffering from LAS/ARC.
