Abstract

The present study aims at assessing the distribution and extension of the coralligenous cliffs in Tuscany and describing the structure and the patterns of spatial variability. The mapping of seabed was obtained through Multibeam echosounder data coupled with video images. Coralligenous cliffs were sampled by SCUBA divers in 11 sectors of rocky costs following the STAR procedure. Coralligenous cliffs were present in all study sites, with a total length of about 62.5 km and a total surface of 0.47 km2. The linear extension of the habitat may be estimated about the 20% of Tuscany rocky coast.

Abstract

Coralligenous reefs are calcareous structures edified mostly by coralline algae that characterize the circalittoral zone of the Mediterranean Sea. However, in some cases coralline algae can constitute peculiar infralittoral biogenic reefs which have been studied less than the circalittoral ones. This study aims to contribute to the knowledge of infralittoral coralligenous reefs by describing their macroalgal assemblages on a large rocky platform off the Tuscany coasts, northwestern Mediterranean Sea. To this end, a multifactorial sampling design was used to describe the structure of the assemblages and to evaluate the variability of the system at multiple spatial scales. A total of 71 macroalgal taxa were found on the coralline algae. Macroalgal assemblages were well structured, with high biodiversity values. The dominant taxa included both photophilous and sciaphilous species, guaranteeing peculiar characteristics in these assemblages, above all if compared with the typical infralittoral and circalittoral macroalgal communities of the same geographic area. The assemblages showed greater variability at a small and intermediate spatial scale than at a large scale. Although infralittoral coralligenous outcrops constitute a peculiar system, they are still poorly understood and should not only be the object of specific studies but also be included in monitoring programmes., Los arrecifes coralígenos son estructuras calcáreas edificadas principalmente por algas coralinas que caracterizan la zona circalitoral del Mar Mediterráneo. Sin embargo, en algunos casos las algas coralinas pueden constituir peculiares arrecifes biogénicos infralitorales menos investigados que los circalitorales. El estudio tiene como objetivo contribuir al conocimiento de los arrecifes coralígenos infralitorales describiendo sus comunidades de macroalgas en una gran plataforma rocosa frente a las costas de Toscana, al noroeste del mar Mediterráneo. Un diseño de muestreo multifactorial fue utilizado para describir la estructura de comunidades algales y evaluar la variabilidad del sistema en múltiples escalas espaciales. Se encontró un total de 71 taxones de macroalgas sobre las algas coralinas. Las comunidades de macroalgas estaban bien estructuradas con altos valores de biodiversidad. Los taxones dominantes incluyeron tanto especies fotófilas como esciáfilas, lo que garantizó características peculiares a estas comunidades si se comparan con las típicas comunidades de macroalgas infralitorales y circalitorales de la misma área geográfica. Las comunidades mostraron una variabilidad a pequeña e intermedia escala mayor que a gran escala espacial. Si bien los afloramientos coralígenos infralitorales constituyen un sistema peculiar, aún son poco conocidos y deberían ser objeto no solo de estudios específicos sino también incluidos en programas de monitoreo ambiental.

Abstract

Coralligenous reefs are the main biogenic constructions of the Mediterranean Sea. The two main coralligenous morphologies are cliffs and platforms. Coralligenous cliffs mostly develop in shallower waters (about 20-50 m) on vertical/sub vertical rocky substrates. Coralligenous platforms are mostly distributed on horizontal substrates below 40-50 m depth on detritic bottoms and rocky outcrops of the continental shelf. The present study aims at contributing to the knowledge of coralligenous cliffs through the assessment of their distribution and extent in a wide geographic zone of northwestern Mediterranean Sea, focusing on the structure and the spatial variability of the associated assemblages. To achieve these objectives, coralligenous cliffs of Tuscany coasts were mapped through Multibeam and Remotely Operated Vehicles. The area of coralligenous cliffs was also manually calculated for each study site using linear extent and bathymetric range of the habitat. In addition, the structure of the associated assemblages was investigated by a multifactorial sampling design taking into account spatial scales ranging from meters to tens of kilometres. Coralligenous cliffs were present in all the study sites, with a linear extent of about 20% of Tuscany’s rocky coastline and an area of about 20% of the Tuscan coralligenous reefs. The difference between data manually calculated and those obtained by Quantum- GIS software was about 33% of the total area. A continental-to-island gradient and a latitudinal gradient were the main factors driving the structure of the associated assemblages. Results highlighted that coralligenous cliffs represent a considerable part of circalittoral biogenic habitat, suggesting that their relevance may be greater than what normally emerges from seabed mapping and that they should be considered separately in monitoring programs, impact assessment studies and management plans.

Abstract

Abiotic environmental conditions can significantly influence the way species interact. In particular, plant–herbivore interactions can be substantially dependent on temperature and nutrients. The overall product of these relationships is critical for the fate and stability of vegetated ecosystems like marine forests. The last few decades have seen a rapid spread of barrens on temperate rocky reefs mainly as a result of overgrazing. The ecological feedbacks that characterize the barren state involve a different set of interactions than those occurring in vegetated habitats. Reversing these trends requires a proper understanding of the novel feedbacks and the conditions under which they operate. Here, we explored the role of a secondary herbivore in reinforcing the stability of barrens formed by sea urchin overgrazing under different nutrient conditions. Combining comparative and experimental studies in two Mediterranean regions characterized by contrasting nutrient conditions, we assessed: (i) if the creation of barren areas enhances limpet abundance, (ii) the size-specific grazing impact by limpets, and (iii) the ability of limpets alone to maintain barrens. Our results show that urchin overgrazing enhanced limpet abundance. The effects of limpet grazing varied with nutrient conditions, being up to five times more intense under oligotrophic conditions. Limpets were able to maintain barrens in the absence of sea urchins only under low-nutrient conditions, enhancing the stability of the depauperate state. Overall, our study suggests a greater vulnerability of subtidal forests in oligotrophic regions of the Mediterranean and demonstrates the importance of environment conditions in regulating feedbacks mediated by plant–herbivore interactions

Trabajo presentado al 7th Mediterranean Symposium on Marine Vegetation, celebrado en Génova (Italia), los días 19 y 20 de septiembre de 2022., The anchoring of large pleasure boats constitutes one of the main threats in shallow marine habitats and particularly for seagrass beds. In the Mediterranean, this activity has seen constant development during the last decades, causing major physical disturbances in Posidonia oceanica meadows and associated ecosystem services, notably in terms of climate change mitigation (i.e. carbon fixation and sequestration capacities). In this context, the aims of the present study are to estimate the impact of these anchoring activities on P. oceanica meadows in a particularly highlyfrequented area (Sant’Amanza gulf, SE Corsica Island) and to set up a strategy to restore this major carbon sink. Since the last decade, time-series of marine habitat maps revealed an important regression of P. oceanica meadows, with a loss of 72.9 ha, corresponding to 11% of the meadow surface and 9% decline in the total carbon fixation and sequestration performed each year. Moreover, in the most impacted part of the bay (Balistra bay), a loss of 16.6 ha (28%) has been recorded between 2011 and 2022. Following recent enforcement of anchoring regulation, prohibiting the anchoring of large units (greater than 24 m), and the lockdown linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, anchorages in the seagrass reduced by 92%, between 2018 and 2022. Natural recovery was observed at the edge of the meadow (plagiotropic rhizomes) but this growth is slow and the areas to recover are large. As a result, a transplant experiment, from cuttings harvested from the adjacent meadows, was initiated in the spring 2021. Abstract

The last few decades have seen a rapid spread of barrens on temperate rocky reefs as sea urchin overgrazing of marine forests causes habitats to shift to more depauperate stable states. Reversing these trends requires a proper understanding of the novel ecological feedbacks that maintain rocky barrens and the conditions under which they operate. In this study, we explored the role of a secondary herbivore (a grazing limpet) in reinforcing the stability of barrens formed under different nutrient conditions. Combining comparative and field experimental studies in two Mediterranean regions characterized by contrasting nutrient regimes, we assessed: (i) if the creation of barren areas by sea urchins enhances limpet abundance, (ii) the grazing impact by limpets through foraging marks (halos), and (iii) the ability of limpets to maintain barrens in the absence of sea urchins. Our results show that sea urchin overgrazing of erect macroalgae enhanced limpet abundance in both nutrient regimes. The effects of limpet grazing on macroalgal assemblages varied with nutrient regimes being up to six times more intense under oligotrophic conditions. Finally, we found that limpets were able to maintain barrens in the absence of the sea urchins only under low nutrient regimes. Our results suggest greater vulnerability of subtidal forests to overgrazing in oligotrophic regions and demonstrate the importance of environmental settings in regulating ecosystem feedbacks mediated by plant-herbivore interactions

Abstract

Biological invasions are an important component of global biodiversity changes. Distinguishing between intensity and importance of competition may foster our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning context dependency in the ecological impacts of invasions. The importance of competition represents the effect of competition in regulating species performance in relation to that of the whole set of environmental drivers. In contrast, the intensity of competition estimates the difference in the performance of one or more target species between the presence and the absence of competition. We re-analyzed previously published data to evaluate how intensity and importance of competition from the invasive seaweed, Caulerpa cylindracea, on resident macroalgal assemblages changed following nutrient enrichment. Adding nutrients did not alter the intensity of competition from C. cylindracea on species richness, but decreased its importance. In contrast, both the intensity and importance of competition from C. cylindracea on community cover increased following nutrient enrichment. Thus, a greater impact of C. cylindracea at enhanced nutrient levels was not solely the result of increased intensity of competition, as could be concluded without taking into account that the performance of target organisms is generally impacted by multiple drivers. These results suggest that the importance of competition from exotic species depends on the extent to which native species are constrained by biotic interactions versus abiotic factors. Abstract

Good datasets of geo-referenced records of alien species are a prerequisite for assessing the spatio-temporal dynamics of biological invasions, their invasive potential, and the magnitude of their impacts. However, with the exception of first records on a country level or wider regions, observations of species presence tend to remain unpublished, buried in scattered repositories or in the personal databases of experts. Through an initiative to collect, harmonize and make such unpublished data for marine alien and cryptogenic species in the Mediterranean Sea available, a large dataset comprising 5376 records was created. It includes records of 239 alien or cryptogenic taxa (192 Animalia, 24 Plantae, 23 Chromista) from 19 countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. In terms of records, the most reported Phyla in descending order were Chordata, Mollusca, Chlorophyta, Arthropoda, and Rhodophyta. The most recorded species was Caulerpa cylindracea, followed by Siganus luridus, Magallana sp. (cf. gigas or angulata) and Pterois miles. The dataset includes records from 1972 to 2020, with the highest number of records observed in 2018. Among the records of the dataset, Dictyota acutiloba is a first record for the Mediterranean Sea. Nine first country records are also included: the alga Caulerpa taxifolia var. distichophylla, the cube boxfish Ostracion cubicus, and the cleaner shrimp Urocaridella pulchella from Israel; the sponge Paraleucilla magna from Libya and Slovenia; the lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus from Cyprus; the bryozoan Celleporaria vermiformis and the polychaetes Prionospio depauperata and Notomastus aberans from Malta.

Abstract

Macroalgal forests are one of the most productive and valuable marine ecosystems, but yet strongly exposed to fragmentation and loss. Detailed large-scale information on their distribution is largely lacking, hindering conservation initiatives. In this study, a systematic effort to combine spatial data on Cystoseira C. Agardh canopies (Fucales, Phaeophyta) was carried out to develop a Habitat Suitability Model (HSM) at Mediterranean scale, providing critical tools to improve site prioritization for their management, restoration and protection. A georeferenced database on the occurrence of 20 Cystoseira species was produced collecting all the available information from published and grey literature, web data portals and co-authors personal data. Data were associated to 55 predictor variable layers in the (ASCII) raster format and were used in order to develop the HSM by means of a Random Forest, a very effective Machine Learning technique. Knowledge about the distribution of Cystoseira canopies was available for about the 14% of the Mediterranean coastline. Absence data were available only for the 2% of the basin. Despite these gaps, our HSM showed high accuracy levels in reproducing Cystoseira distribution so that the first continuous maps of the habitat across the entire basin was produced. Misclassification errors mainly occurred in the eastern and southern part of the basin, where large gaps of knowledge emerged. The most relevant drivers were the geomorphological ones, followed by anthropogenic variables proxies of pollution and urbanization. Our model shows the importance of data sharing to combine a large number of spatial and environmental data, allowing to individuate areas with high probability of Cystoseira occurrence as suitable for its presence. This approach encourages the use of this modelling tool for the prediction of Cystoseira distribution and for supporting and planning conservation and management initiatives. Abstract

This study investigates whether eutrophication can affect the capacity of the canopy alga Cystoseira brachycarpa to impede or limit the spread of the introduced species Caulerpa cylindracea. By means of a manipulative field study (16 months long), the effects of nutrient enrichment and C. cylindracea removal were tested on the canopy-alga and the associated macroalgal community. Results highlighted deep changes through time due to nutrient enrichment, as C. brachycarpa decreased and Halopteris scoparia increased in cover. Furthermore, C. brachycarpa was also affected by the presence of the introduced species Caulerpa cylindracea which, in turn, was found significantly advantaged by nutrient enrichment. Overall, our findings suggest that eutrophication can drive the substitution of Cystoseira with H. scoparia, leading to the shift from canopy to opportunistic species, which are unable to avoid the spread of C. cylindracea.
