Abstract

The Large Binocular Telescope, with its expansive collecting area, angular resolving power, and advanced optical design, provides a robust platform for development and operation of advanced instrumentation for astronomical research. The LBT currently hosts a mature suite of instruments for spectroscopy and imaging at optical through mid-infrared wavelengths, supported by sophisticated adaptive optics systems. This contribution summarizes the current state of instrumentation, including upgrades to existing instruments and commissioning of second generation instruments now in progress. Abstract

The highest scientific return, for adaptive optics (AO) observations, is achieved with a reliable reconstruction of the PSF. This is especially true for MICADO@ELT. In this presentation, we will focus on extending the MICADO PSF reconstruction (PSF-R) method to the off-axis case. Specifically, a novel approach based on temporal-based tomography of AO telemetry data has been recently implemented. Results from the PSF-R of both simulated and real data show that, at half isoplanatic angle distances, a precision of about 10-15% is achievable in both Strehl ratio and full-width at half maximum, paving the way to extend the MICADO PSF-R tool also to the multi-conjugated AO case., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

MICADO is the first-light camera of the ESO ELT, allowing NIR imaging and long-slit spectroscopy assisted by adaptive optics. MICADO is now entering its construction phase, and the software for data reduction is reaching an adequate maturity level. The PSF Reconstruction (PSF-R) of MICADO is a software tool for the blind derivation of the PSF, only using adaptive optics telemetry data. An update of the status of the PSF-R service is provided here. The PSF-R prototype has been tested on ERIS@VLT data in order to check the reconstruction of on- and off-axis PSFs. The on-axis PSF-R is accurate at a few percent level on Strehl, FWHM, Encircled Energy, and half light radius, while for the off-axis case the match is within 10-15 percent at a distance of half isoplanatic angle. The first version of the workflow for the PSF-R pipeline has been developed and verified using the latest release of the ESO data processing system. A set of simulations has been implemented on the morphological analysis of distant galaxies, showing that the accuracy of the PSF-R matches the goals needed to study their morphology. Abstract

Since volcanic activity was first discovered on Io from Voyager images in 1979, changes on Io's surface have been monitored from both spacecraft and ground-based telescopes. Here, we present the highest spatial resolution images of Io ever obtained from a ground-based telescope. These images, acquired by the SHARK-VIS instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope, show evidence of a major resurfacing event on Io's trailing hemisphere. When compared to the most recent spacecraft images, the SHARK-VIS images show that a plume deposit from a powerful eruption at Pillan Patera has covered part of the long-lived Pele plume deposit. Although this type of resurfacing event may be common on Io, few have been detected due to the rarity of spacecraft visits and the previously low spatial resolution available from Earth-based telescopes. Abstract

Since 2005 ESO has been working with its community and industry to develop an extremely large optical/infrared telescope. ESO's Extremely Large Telescope, or ELT for short, is a revolutionary ground-based telescope that will have a 39-metre main mirror and will be the largest visible and infrared light telescope in the world. To address specific topics that are needed for the science operations and calibrations of the telescope, thirteen specific working groups were created to coordinate the effort between ESO, the instrument consortia, and the wider community. Abstract

The astronomical applications greatly benefit from the knowledge of the instrument PSF. We describe the PSF Reconstruction algorithm developed for the LBT LUCI instrument assisted by the SOUL SCAO module. The reconstruction procedure considers only synchronous wavefront sensor telemetry data and a few asynchronous calibrations. We do not compute the Optical Transfer Function and corresponding filters. We compute instead a temporal series of wavefront maps and for each of these the corresponding instantaneous PSF. We tested the algorithm both in laboratory arrangement and in the nighttime for different SOUL configurations, adapting it to the guide star magnitudes and seeing conditions. Abstract

Current state-of-the-art adaptive optics (AO) provides ground-based, diffraction-limited observations with high Strehl ratios (SR). However, a detailed knowledge of the point spread function (PSF) is required to fully exploit the scientific potential of these data. This is even more crucial for the next generation AO instruments that will equip 30-meter class telescopes, as the characterization of the PSF will be mandatory to fulfill the planned scientific requirements. For this reason, there is a growing interest in developing tools that accurately reconstruct the observed PSF of AO systems, the so-called PSF reconstruction. In this context, a PSF-R service is a planned deliverable for the MICADO@ELT instrument and our group is in charge of its development. In the case of MICADO, a blind PSF-R approach is being pursued to have the widest applicability to science cases. This means that the PSF is reconstructed without extracting information from the science data, relying only on telemetry and calibrations. While our PSF-R algorithm is currently being developed, its implementation is mature enough to test performances with actual observations. In this presentation we will discuss the reliability of our reconstructed PSFs and the uncertainties introduced in the measurements of scientific quantities for bright, on-axis observations taken with the SOUL+LUCI instrument of the LBT. This is the first application of our algorithm to real data. It demonstrates its readiness level and paves the way to further testing. Our PSF-R algorithm is able to reconstruct the SR and full-width at half maximum of the observed PSFs with errors smaller than 2% and 4.5%, respectively. We carried out the scientific evaluation of the obtained reconstructed PSFs thanks to a dedicated set of simulated observations of an ideal science case., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. MICADO is a workhorse instrument for the ESO ELT, allowing first light capability for diffraction limited imaging and long-slit spectroscopy at near-infrared wavelengths. The PSF Reconstruction (PSF-R) Team of MICADO is currently implementing, for the first time within all ESO telescopes, a software service devoted to the blind reconstruction of the PSF. This tool will work independently of the science data, using adaptive optics telemetry data, both for Single Conjugate (SCAO) and Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics (MCAO) allowed by the MORFEO module. Abstract

This paper presents the status of an ongoing project aimed at developing a PSF reconstruction software for adaptive optics (AO) observations. In particular, we test for the first time the implementation of pyramid wave-front sensor data on our algorithms. As a first step in assessing its reliability, we applied the software to bright, on-axis, point-like sources using two independent sets of observations, acquired with the single-conjugated AO upgrade for the Large Binocular Telescope. Using only telemetry data, we reconstructed the PSF by carefully calibrating the instrument response. The accuracy of the results has been first evaluated using the classical metric: specifically, the reconstructed PSFs differ from the observed ones by less than 2% in Strehl ratio and 4.5% in full-width at half maximum. Moreover, the recovered encircled energy associated with the PSF core is accurate at 4% level in the worst case. The accuracy of the reconstructed PSFs has then been evaluated by considering an idealized scientific test-case consisting in the measurements of the morphological parameters of a compact galaxy. In the future, our project will include the analysis of anisoplanatism, low SNR regimes, and the application to multi-conjugated AO observations., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures. The point spread function reconstruction (PSF-R) capability is a deliverable of the MICADO@ESO-ELT project. In the framework of a 4m class Solar Telescope we studied the performance of the MCAO using the LOST simulation package. In particular, in this work we focus on two different methods to reduce the time delay error which is particularly critical in solar adaptive optics: a) the optimization of the wavefront reconstruction by reordering the modal base on the basis of the Mutual Information and b) the possibility of forecasting the wavefront correction through different approaches. Abstract

Since 2005 ESO has been working with its community and industry to develop an extremely large optical/infrared telescope. ESO's Extremely Large Telescope, or ELT for short, is a revolutionary ground-based telescope that will have a 39-metre main mirror and will be the largest visible and infrared light telescope in the world. To address specific topics that are needed for the science operations and calibrations of the telescope, thirteen specific working groups were created to coordinate the effort between ESO, the instrument consortia, and the wider community. Abstract

Context. Solar activity poses substantial risk for astronauts of the International Space Station (ISS) both on board and during extravehicular activity. An accurate assessment of the charged radiation flux in space habitats is necessary to determine the risk and the specific type of radiation exposure of ISS crew members, and to develop ways to protect future crews for planetary missions, even in case of high solar activity. Aims. To reduce the present-day uncertainties about the nature and magnitude of the particle fluxes in space habitats during a solar event, it is fundamental to measure those fluxes in situ. Methods. The ALTEA (Anomalous Long Term Effects on Astronauts) experiment on board the ISS is an active detector composed of six silicon telescopes and is able to follow the dynamics of the radiation flux. During its operation in 2012 a number of flux peaks were detected in correspondence with solar events. Results. We present in this work an analysis of the ALTEA data measured during the March 7th, 2012 solar event, produced by NOAA AR11429. Conclusions. During this event, the flux was enhanced tenfold with respect to ‘‘quiet Sun’’ conditions, producing strong dose increases at high geomagnetic latitudes.

Abstract

High-energy charged particles represent a severe radiation risk for astronauts and spacecrafts and could damage ground critical infrastructures related to space services. Different natural sources are the origin of these particles, among them galactic cosmic rays, solar energetic particles and particles trapped in radiation belts. Solar particle events (SPE) consist in the emission of high-energy protons, alpha-particles, electrons and heavier particles from solar flares or shocks driven by solar plasma propagating through the corona and interplanetary space. Ground-level enhancements (GLE) are rare solar events in which particles are accelerated to near relativistic energies and affect space and ground-based infrastructures. During the current solar cycle 24 a single GLE event was recorded on May 17th, 2012 associated with an M5.1-class solar flare. The investigation of such a special class of solar events permits us to measure conditions in space critical to both scientific and operational research. This event, classified as GLE71, was detected on board the International Space Station (ISS) by the active particle detectors of the ALTEA (Anomalous Long Term Effects in Astronauts) experiment. The collected data permit us to study the radiation environment inside the ISS. In this work we present the first results of the analysis of data acquired by ALTEA detectors during GLE71 associated with an M5.1-class solar flare. We estimate the energy loss spectrum of the solar particles and evaluate the contribution to the total exposure of ISS astronauts to solar high-energy charged particles.

26. MICADO Data Reduction Library Design for PSF Reconstruction Application

Abstract

Presented and reviewed at MICADO Final Design Review at ESO. MICADO is the Multi-Adaptive Optics (AO) Imaging Camera for Deep Observations. It will equip the European Southern Observatory (ESO) Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) with a first light capability for diffraction limited imaging and long-slit spectroscopy at near-infrared wavelengths. MICADO (MCD) is a workhorse instrument for the E-ELT. While its primary focus is AO-assisted imaging, it provides a high level of flexibility for modes that are not necessarily offered by other E-ELT instruments, and that will lead to observations with a major scientific impact. The instrument will work with a multi-conjugate laser guide star adaptive optics system (MCAO, developed by the MAORY consortium) as well as a single-conjugate natural guide star adaptive optics system (SCAO, developed jointly by the MICADO and MAORY consortia). It will interface to the MAORY warm optical relay that re-images the telescope focus. In this configuration, both MCAO and SCAO are available. If required for an initial phase, MICADO will also be able to operate with just the SCAO system in a “stand-alone” mode, using a simpler optical relay that interfaces directly to the telescope. MICADO has four observing modes producing data: Standard Imaging, Astrometric Imaging, High-contrast Imaging, and Spectroscopy. Each observing mode can optionally be operated in a configuration that gathers the data (Wave Front Sensing (WFS) images and telemetry) required for Point Spread Function (PSF) Reconstruction (PSF-R). The PSF Reconstruction (PSF-R) Team of MICADO will develop, for the first time within all ESO telescopes, a software service devoted to the reconstruction of the PSF. The PSF-R Team will build up the tools and architecture needed to develop and test the PSF-R Application for MICADO, when the instrument will be mounted on the bench (at PAE) and later on the ELT site (at PAC). The coupling with ELT telescope is fundamental for the definition of the shape of the PSF and implies a large refinement work to be performed on data collected on the sky. Since the MICADO PSF-R tool is the first experiment of its kind using (for SCAO) pyramid WFS telemetry data, the PSF-R Team opted for over-specifying the list of possible inputs and effects at FDR: it will be assessed on later phases whether the error sources are marginal or not. Preliminary analysis of the main effects has already been started. The PSF-R tools is not recommended for the High-contrast imaging mode, since this mode focuses instead on canceling the PSF using peculiar observational and instrumental techniques (i.e. Angular Differential Imaging and Coronography). The reconstructed PSF in High-contrast imaging mode can be used e.g. in order to characterise a detected exoplanet, but not for subtracting the primary bright star. Moreover, the PSF-R Applications will not work for the seeing enhancer and seeing limited (No-AO) modes. In the case of spatially resolved AO reference guide objects, i.e. satellite in non-sidereal imaging mode, or observations in tracking field mode, the PSF-R will suffer from larger errors and it is not recommended.

Abstract

MOONS is the new Multi-Object Optical and Near-infrared Spectrograph currently under construction for the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at ESO. This remarkable instrument combines, for the first time, the collecting power of an 8-m telescope, 1000 fibres with individual robotic positioners, and both low- and high-resolution simultaneous spectral coverage across the 0.64-1.8 micron wavelength range. This facility will provide the astronomical community with a powerful, world-leading instrument able to serve a wide range of Galactic, extragalactic and cosmological studies. Construction is now proceeding full steam ahead and this overview article presents some of the science goals and the technical description of the MOONS instrument. Abstract

The monitoring and protection of satellites is a crucial component of national security and space traffic management. Characterizing the local space environment around important satellites, such as persistence surveillance platforms and communication satellites, requires an ability to robustly detect, identify and classify any objects or debris in proximity to the satellite that may pose a threat. Accomplishing this task requires using large aperture (>3m) ground-based telescopes. However, image blur caused by the finite aperture size of the telescope and dynamic atmospheric blur will cause the observed reflected solar illumination of the satellite to be smeared out across the image, effectively obscuring the presence of any faint object in proximity to the spacecraft. Overcoming this problem of detecting a faint source embedded in the noise of another source, commonly referred to as the problem of identifying closely spaced objects (CSOs), requires both high-resolution and high-contrast imaging. The significant technical barrier that must be overcome is the building of a high-fidelity model of the turbulence in the atmosphere. One step in overcoming this barrier is the use of a large aperture telescope equipped with an adaptive optics (AO) system with a temporal response matched to the Greenwood frequency of the site. However, even with such a system, the limited spatial sampling of the wave front by the wave-front-sensor limits the measurement of the high frequencies in the wave front, thus limiting the effectiveness of the AO correction and thus yielding an image with a resolution lower than that of the diffraction limit of the telescope. This residual blur represents an accumulation of uncorrected faint speckle structure in the PSF which can obscure the presence of any objects or debris near the primary satellite. Removing this residual blur in the AO-restored imagery requires the use of advanced multi-frame blind deconvolution (MFBD) algorithms. The basis of MFBD is to solve for a single static object scene and a set of PSFs that change in a temporal fashion that is consistent with turbulence induced errors in the wave front. Typically, the number of PSFs that must be estimated for MFBD is on the order of several hundred (1-2 seconds of image data) as a low-earth orbiting (LEO) object changes pose significantly enough on longer time scales that the assumption of a static object scene is violated, thus causing MFBD to produce erroneous non-physical results. For the CSO problem at a geostationary orbit the object will remain static on much longer time scales, and this will allow MFBD to use a much larger volume of data (5-10 minutes), and thus obtain a higher resolution image of the primary satellite over the AO compensated image. Further, we will demonstrate the effects of how a high fidelity PSF model can dramatically improve the background in the image via the proper modeling of the uncorrected speckle structure in the PSF. This will lead to an ability to perform high contrast imaging, which allows the use of MFBD restoration on data where brightness between the satellite and companion will cover a dynamic range on the order of 104. Scaling the MFBD problem with data volume (from several thousand to several million variables) represents a formidable computational and minimization challenge, that we study using a sequence of high frame rate (1 kHz) images acquired with the SHARK-VIS forerunner at the Large Binocular Telescope (8.4m aperture). We demonstrate the importance of leveraging temporal correlations in the turbulence, that is encoded into Fourier spectra of the imagery by the optical system, to obtain high quality starting guesses for the wave fronts used in the large scale MFBD. We then demonstrate how an improvement in the fidelity of a PSF model from MFBD can improve the use of Recurrence Quantification Analysis (RQA) to statistically discriminate between the signal of the faint satellite companion and the speckle noise in the imagery.

Abstract

Advanced Astronomy for Heliophysics Plus (ADAHELI+) is a project concept for a small solar and space weather mission with a budget compatible with an European Space Agency (ESA) S-class mission, including launch, and a fast development cycle. ADAHELI+ was submitted to the European Space Agency by a European-wide consortium of solar physics research institutes in response to the "Call for a small mission opportunity for a launch in 2017," of March 9, 2012. The ADAHELI+ project builds on the heritage of the former ADAHELI mission, which had successfully completed its phase-A study under the Italian Space Agency 2007 Small Mission Programme, thus proving the soundness and feasibility of its innovative low-budget design. ADAHELI+ is a solar space mission with two main instruments: ISODY+: an imager, based on Fabry-Perot interferometers, whose design is optimized to the acquisition of highest cadence, long-duration, multiline spectropolarimetric images in the visible/near-infrared region of the solar spectrum. XSPO: an x-ray polarimeter for solar flares in x-rays with energies in the 15 to 35 keV range. ADAHELI+ is capable of performing observations that cannot be addressed by other currently planned solar space missions, due to their limited telemetry, or by ground-based facilities, due to the problematic effect of the terrestrial atmosphere.
