5. The Writer’s Soundtrack in Cien botellas en una pared

Abstract

The present article analyzes how a metafictional discourse on what it means to be a contemporary (Cuban) writer interacts with frequent references to popular music in the novel Cien botellas en una pared (2002; 2010) by Ena Lucía Portela. The novel’s explicit discussion of publishing as a Cuban author enters into dialogue with the idea of “world fiction” that Pascale Casanova expresses in The World Republic of Letters (2004).  The essay argues that the inclusion of popular music in the body of the novel and the footnotes to the 2010 edition allow Cien botellas to avoid becoming the bland “world fiction” that Casanova critiques.  While the novel’s abundant references to popular Cuban music establish a specifically Cuban context, the educational footnotes make the novel accessible to a broad readership that comes from different places and possesses varying kinds of cultural education.  Furthermore, by creating a bridge between the fictional world and the real world, references to diverse genres of music, ranging from the guaracha to the bolero, invite the reader to examine the roles that popular music plays in the novel and in Cuban society.

7. Entre el diario y el recetario: la reivindicación de la escritura íntima en la trilogía culinaria de Laura Esquivel

Abstract

What occurs when a novel is disguised as both a personal diary and a cookbook, two apparently dissimilar genres? The present article attempts to answer that question through an analysis of the culinary trilogy by Mexican author Laura Esquivel: Como agua para chocolate (1989), El diario de Tita (2016), and Mi negro pasado (2017). Several definitions of the personal diary and of privacy as a historical phenomenon shed light upon the functions of diary-writing that El diario de Tita imitates. I contrast the diary’s intimate space with the kitchen’s private space in the first two novels. Although both spaces can be transgressive in their own manner, the diary gives its writer the freedom to reflect and to define him/herself. To delve into the contrast between diary-writing and recipe-writing, I turn to one of the Latin American prototypes of the cookbook mixed with narrative: Cocina ecléctica (1890) by the Argentinian writer Juana Manuela Gorriti. Lastly, I analyze the absence of intimate writing in Mi negro pasado to support the argument that the trilogy defends the right to privacy and reclaims a space for intimate writing within the private space of the family and the public space of society., ¿Qué sucede cuando una novela se disfraza de diario íntimo y de recetario, dos géneros al parecer disímiles? El trabajo presente pretende desentrañar esta pregunta mediante un análisis de la trilogía culinaria de la escritora mexicana Laura Esquivel: Como agua para chocolate (1989), El diario de Tita (2016) y Mi negro pasado (2017). Algunas definiciones del diario íntimo y de la intimidad como fenómeno histórico arrojan luz sobre las funciones de la escritura íntima que El diario de Tita imita. Contrasto el espacio íntimo del diario con el espacio privado de la cocina en las primeras dos novelas. Aunque ambos espacios pueden resultar transgresores a su manera, el diario le confiere a su escritor la libertad especial de reflexionar y de autodefinirse. Para profundizar en el contraste entre el diario y el recetario, recurro a uno de los prototipos latinoamericanos del recetario que intercala el relato: Cocina ecléctica (1890) de la escritora argentina Juana Manuela Gorriti. En última instancia, analizo la ausencia de la escritura íntima en Mi negro pasado para respaldar el argumento de que la trilogía defiende el derecho a la intimidad y reivindica la escritura íntima dentro del espacio privado de la familia y del espacio público de la sociedad.

Abstract

Background. The current West Africa Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak has resulted in multiple individuals being medically evacuated to other countries for clinical management. Methods. We report two patients who were transported from West Africa to the United States for treatment of EVD. Both patients received aggressive supportive care measures, as well as an investigational therapeutic (TKM-100802) and convalescent plasma. Results. While one patient experienced critical illness with multi-organ failure requiring mechanical ventilation and renal replacement therapy, both patients recovered without serious long-term sequelae to date. Conclusions. It is unclear what role the experimental drug and convalescent plasma had in the recovery of these patients. Prospective clinical trials are needed to delineate the role of investigational therapies in the care of patients with EVD.

13. Musicalized Metatheatre: The Boleroas Intertext in Quíntuplesby Luis Rafael Sánchez

Abstract

Abstract:The present article analyzes the ways in which the drama Quíntuples(1984) by Puerto Rican playwright Luis Rafael Sánchez uses the boleroas an important intertext. The essay traces the parallels between the boleroas a culturally syncretistic musical genre and Quíntuplesas a fusion of dramatic and narrative elements. The play’s narrative elements include the incorporation of an author figure, monologue, and metaliterary comments. This article examines how spectator and reader involvement in Quíntuplesrelates to the bolerista’s affective communication with the audience. The analysis focuses on the three most ostentatiously melodramatic characters, who reveal connections to the entertainment industry and enact different characteristics of the bolero: Dafne, Mandrake, and Papá Morrison. The article ultimately explores how the characters deconstruct the act of performing, inviting readers to reflect on the nature of theater and the necessary complicity between actor and spectator, writer and reader.
