We present the first principles construction of the low-energy effective action for bosonic self-organized quantum quasicrystals. Our generalized elasticity approach retains the appropriate number of phase- and corresponding conjugate density- degrees-of-freedom required for a proper description of the Goldstone modes. For the dodecagonal and decagonal quasicrystal structures we obtain collective longitudinal and transversal excitations with an isotropic speed of sound. Meanwhile, for the octagonal structure, the coupling between phononic and phasonic degrees of freedom leads in turn to hybridization of the latter with the condensate sound mode, producing collective excitations with a longitudinal and transversal component, and an anisotropic speed of sound. Experimental platforms based on ultracold atomic gases have significantly advanced the quantum simulation of complex systems, yet the exploration of phenomena driven by long-range interactions remains a formidable challenge. Currently available methods utilizing dipolar quantum gases or multi-mode cavities allow to implement long-range interactions with a $1/r^3$ character or with a spatial profile fixed by the mode-structure of the vacuum electromagnetic field surrounding the atoms, respectively. Here we propose an experimental scheme employing laser-painted cavity-mediated interactions, which enables the realization of atom-atom interactions that are fully tunable in range, shape, and sign. Our approach combines the versatility of cavity quantum electrodynamics with the precision of laser manipulation, thus providing a highly flexible platform for simulating and understanding long-range interactions in quantum many-body systems. Our analytical predictions are supported by numerical simulations describing the full dynamics of atoms, laser, and cavity. The latter demonstrate that there is a wide and experimentally accessible parameter regime where our protocol optimally works. The methodology not only paves the way for exploring new territories in quantum simulation but also enhances the understanding of fundamental physics, potentially leading to the discovery of novel quantum states and phases.

Coupling a system to two different baths can lead to novel phenomena escaping the constraints of thermal equilibrium. In quantum materials inside optical cavities, this feature can be exploited as electrons and cavity-photons are easily pulled away from their mutual equilibrium, even in the steady state. This offers new routes for a non-invasive control of material properties and functionalities. We show that the absence of thermal equilibrium between electrons and photons leads to reduced symmetries of the steady-state electronic distribution function. Moreover, by defining an effective temperature from the on-shell distribution function, we find a non-monotonic behaviour as a function of cavity frequency, consistent with recent experimental findings. Finally, we show that, the non-thermal behaviour leads to qualitative modifications of the material's properties, as the standard Sommerfeld expansion for observables is modified by a leading-order correction linearly proportional to the temperature difference between the two baths and to the frequency-derivative of the electron damping.

The Tavis-Cummings model is a paradigmatic central-mode model where a set of two-level quantum emitters (spins) are coupled to a collective cavity mode. Here we study the eigenstate spectrum, its localization properties and the effect on dynamics, focusing on the two-excitation sector relevant for nonlinear photonics. These models admit two sources of disorder: in the coupling between the spins and the cavity and in the energy shifts of the individual spins. While this model was known to be exactly solvable in the limit of a homogeneous coupling and inhomogeneous energy shifts, we here establish the solvability in the opposite limit of a homogeneous energy shift and inhomogeneous coupling, presenting the exact solution and corresponding conserved quantities. We identify three different classes of eigenstates, exhibiting different degrees of multifractality and semilocalization closely tied to the integrable points, and study their stability to perturbations away from these solvable points. The dynamics of the cavity occupation number away from equilibrium, exhibiting boson bunching and a two-photon blockade, is explicitly related to the localization properties of the eigenstates and illustrates how these models support a collective spin description despite the presence of disorder., Comment: 10+6 pages

We consider continuous time-crystalline phases in dissipative many-body systems of atoms in cavities, focusing on the role of short-range interatomic interactions. First, we show that the latter can alter the nature of the time crystal by changing the type of the underlying critical bifurcation. Second, we characterize the heating mechanism and dynamics resulting from the short-range interactions and demonstrate that they make the time crystal inherently metastable. We argue that this is generic for the broader class of dissipative time crystals in atom-cavity systems whenever the cavity loss rate is comparable to the atomic recoil energy. We observe that such a scenario for heating resembles the one proposed for preheating of the early universe, where the oscillating coherent inflation field decays into a cascade of exponentially growing fluctuations. By extending approaches for dissipative dynamical systems to our many-body problem, we obtain analytical predictions for the parameters describing the phase transition and the heating rate inside the time-crystalline phase. We underpin and extend the analytical predictions of the heating rates with numerical simulations.

We study two-dimensional materials where electrons are coupled to the vacuum electromagnetic field of a cavity. We show that, at the onset of the superradiant phase transition towards a macroscopic photon occupation of the cavity, the critical electromagnetic fluctuations, consisting of photons strongly overdamped by their interaction with electrons, can in turn lead to the absence of electronic quasiparticles. Since transverse photons couple to the electronic current, the appearance of non-Fermi-Liquid behavior strongly depends on the lattice. In particular, we find that in a square lattice the phase space for electron-photon scattering is reduced in such a way to preserve the quasiparticles, while in a honeycomb lattice the latter are removed due to a non-analytical frequency dependence of the damping $\propto |\omega|^{2/3}$. How are the scattering between the constituents of matter and the resulting collective phenomena affected by preparing the force carriers in different quantum states? This question has become experimentally relevant in a specific non-relativistic version of QED implemented within materials, where standard techniques of quantum optics are available for the preparation of desired quantum states of the carrier photon. We develop the necessary non-equilibrium approach for computing the vertex function and find that, in addition to the energy and momentum structure of the scattering, a further structure emerges which reflects the Hilbert-space distribution of the carrier quantum state. This emergent structure becomes non-trivial for non-Gaussian quantum states of the force carrier, and can dramatically affect interactions and collective phenomena. As a first application, we show that by preparing photons in pure Fock states one can enhance pair correlations, and even control the criticality and universality class of the superconducting phase transition by the choice of the number of photons. Our results also reveal that the thermal mixture of Fock states regularises the strong pair correlations present in each of its components, yielding the standard Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer criticality., Comment: 17 +2 pages, 6 figures

Despite the paradigmatic nature of the Fermi-polaron model, the theoretical description of its nonlinear dynamics poses challenges. Here, we apply a quantum kinetic theory of driven polarons to recent experiments with ultracold atoms, where Rabi oscillations between a Fermi-polaron state and a non-interacting level were reported. The resulting equations separate decoherence from momentum relaxation, with the corresponding rates showing a different dependence on microscopic scattering processes and quasi-particle properties. We describe both the polaron ground state and the excited repulsive-polaron state and we find a good quantitative agreement between our predictions and the available experimental data without any fitting parameter. The use of fully or partially absorbing boundary conditions for diffusion-based problems has become paradigmatic in physical chemistry and biochemistry to describe reactions occurring in solutions or in living media. However, as chemical states may indeed disappear, particles cannot, unless such degradation happens physically and should thus be accounted for explicitly. Here, we introduce a simple, yet general idea that allows one to derive the appropriate boundary conditions self-consistently from the chemical reaction scheme and the geometry of the physical reaction boundaries. As an illustration, we consider two paradigmatic examples, where the known results are recovered by taking specific physical limits. More generally, we demonstrate that our mathematical analysis delivers physical insight that cannot be accessed through standard treatments.

This paper focuses on a newly developed transparent nADPCMB MLT speech coding algorithm. Our coder first decomposes the narrowband speech signal in subbands, a non linear ADPCM scheme is then performed in each subband. The signal subband decomposition is piloted by the equivalent Modulated Lapped Transform (MLT) filter bank. The novelty of this algorithm is the non linear approach, based on neural networks, to subband prediction coding. We investigate transient nonlinear localization, namely the self-excitation of energy bursts in an atomic lattice at finite temperature. As a basic model we consider the diatomic Lennard-Jones chain. Numerical simulations suggest that the effect originates from two different mechanisms. One is the thermal excitation of genuine discrete breathers with frequency in the phonon gap. The second is an effect of nonlinear coupling of fast, lighter particles with slow vibrations of the heavier ones. The quadratic term of the force generate an effective potential that can lead to transient grow of local energy on time scales the can be relatively long for small mass ratios. This heuristics is supported by a multiple-scale approximation based on the natural time-scale separation. We investigate rectified currents in response to oscillating electric fields in systems lacking inversion and time-reversal symmetries. These currents, in second-order perturbation theory, are inversely proportional to the relaxation rate, and, therefore, naively diverge in the ideal clean limit. Employing a combination of the non-equilibrium Green function technique and Floquet theory, we show that this is an artifact of perturbation theory, and that there is a well-defined periodic steady-state akin to Rabi oscillations leading to finite rectified currents in the limit of weak coupling to a thermal bath. In this Rabi regime the rectified current scales as the square root of the radiation intensity, in contrast with the linear scaling of the perturbative regime, allowing to readily diagnose it in experiments. We study the relaxation dynamics of driven, two-dimensional semiconductors, where itinerant electrons dress optically pumped excitons to form two Fermi-polaron branches. Repulsive polarons excited around zero momentum quickly decay to the attractive branch at high momentum. Collisions with electrons subsequently lead to a slower relaxation of attractive polarons, which accumulate at the edge of the light-cone around zero momentum where the radiative loss dominates. The bosonic nature of exciton polarons enables stimulated scattering, which results in a lasing transition at higher pump power. The latter is characterized by a superlinear increase of light emission as well as extended spatiotemporal coherence. As the coherent peak is at the edge of the light-cone and not at the center, the many-body dressing of excitons can reduce the linewidth below the limit set by the exciton nonradiative lifetime., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

We review the recent developments and the current status in the field of quantum-gas cavity QED. Since the first experimental demonstration of atomic self-ordering in a system composed of a Bose-Einstein condensate coupled to a quantized electromagnetic mode of a high-$Q$ optical cavity, the field has rapidly evolved over the past decade. The composite quantum-gas--cavity systems offer the opportunity to implement, simulate, and experimentally test fundamental solid-state Hamiltonians, as well as to realize non-equilibrium many-body phenomena beyond conventional condensed-matter scenarios. This hinges on the unique possibility to design and control in open quantum environments photon-induced tunable-range interaction potentials for the atoms using tailored pump lasers and dynamic cavity fields. Notable examples range from Hubbard-like models with long-range interactions exhibiting a lattice-supersolid phase, over emergent magnetic orderings and quasicrystalline symmetries, to the appearance of dynamic gauge potentials and non-equilibrium topological phases. Experiments have managed to load spin-polarized as well as spinful quantum gases into various cavity geometries and engineer versatile tunable-range atomic interactions. This led to the experimental observation of spontaneous discrete and continuous symmetry breaking with the appearance of soft-modes as well as supersolidity, density and spin self-ordering, dynamic spin-orbit coupling, and non-equilibrium dynamical self-ordered phases among others. In addition, quantum-gas--cavity setups offer new platforms for quantum-enhanced measurements. ${\bf Background}$ Details of the kinetic pathways governing enzymatic cleavage of hyaluronic acid (HA) by hyaluronidase are still widely uncharted. Capillary electrophoresis-based assays were used for accurate quantification of enzymatic products. A crowding agent was also employed to mimic excluded-volume constraints typical of in-vivo conditions. $ {\bf Scope}$ Introduce a comprehensive kinetic model describing the late-stage degradation of HA by hyaluronidase and identify the relevant kinetic pathways and the associated rates. ${\bf Major Conclusions}$ All relevant fragmentation and transglycosylation pathways and rates were identified. Two dimers forming a tetramer is the dominant recombination pathway. Macromolecular and self-crowding slow down the kinetics but do not alter the underlying mechanisms. ${\bf General Significance}$ Our results bring a novel and comprehensive quantitative insight into enzymatic HA degradation. Rationalizing the effect of crowding brings the intricate conditions of in-vivo settings a little closer, and also stands as a powerful tool to pinpoint relevant kinetic pathways in complex systems.

We consider an ensemble of ultracold bosonic atoms within a near-planar cavity, driven by a far detuned laser whose phase is modulated at a frequency comparable to the transverse cavity mode spacing. We show that a strong, dispersive atom-photon coupling can be reached for many transverse cavity modes at once. The resulting Floquet polaritons involve a superposition of a set of cavity modes with a density excitation of the atomic cloud. The mutual interactions between these modes lead to distinct avoided crossings between the polaritons. Increasing the laser drive intensity, a low-lying multimode Floquet polariton softens and eventually becomes undamped, corresponding to the transition to a superradiant, self-organized phase. We show that current noisy quantum computers are ideal platforms for the simulation of quantum many-body dynamics in generic open systems. We demonstrate this using the IBM Quantum Computer as an experimental platform for confirming the theoretical prediction from [Phys. Rev. Lett.124, 100604 (2020)] of an emergent hierarchy of relaxation timescales of many-body observables involving different numbers of qubits. Using different protocols, we leverage the intrinsic dissipation of the machine responsible for gate errors, to implement a quantum simulation of generic (i.e. structureless) local dissipative interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

The instability of a Fermi surface against Ising nematic order destroys the quasiparticle character of the low-energy degrees of freedom. Therefore, observables exhibit deviations from Fermi liquid behavior which gives rise to the term Ising nematic quantum critical metal. To obtain a theoretical description we use a finite-temperature version of Eliashberg theory which allows to treat the strong coupling between quantum and thermal fluctuations in the absence of well-defined quasiparticles. Here, we use this self-consistent, diagrammatic approach to compute, in particular, the nematic susceptibility and the non-Fermi liquid correlations. Upon decreasing the temperature, the susceptibility crosses over from a $(T \log T)^{-1}$ to $T^{-2/3}$ behavior, which is induced by the absence of quasiparticles and restores the Ising nematic critical scaling. Correspondingly, the fermions obey a simple $\omega/T$ scaling law at low enough temperatures. However, this regime is characterized by strong IR-UV mixing since the proportionality factors exhibit a dependence on the spectral width of the non-quasiparticle excitations and on the underlying lattice. Tuning the parameters of the model, therefore, gives rise to several scenarios for the breakdown of the scaling theory. We discuss them within the Eliashberg approach and estimate the related crossover scales. We also show that the leading order vertex corrections do not change the scaling with temperature or coupling constants.

The exclusive presence of $\beta$-D-ribofuranose in nucleic acids is still a conundrum in prebiotic chemistry, given that pyranose species are substantially more stable at equilibrium. However, a precise characterisation of the relative furanose/pyranose fraction at temperatures higher than about 50$^{\,\rm o}$C is still lacking. Here, we employ a combination of NMR measurements and statistical mechanics modelling to predict a population inversion between furanose and pyranose at equilibrium at high temperatures. More importantly, we show that a steady temperature gradient may steer an open isomerisation network into a non-equilibrium steady state where furanose is boosted beyond the limits set by equilibrium thermodynamics. Moreover, we demonstrate that nonequilibrium selection of furanose is maximum at optimal dissipation, as gauged by the temperature gradient and energy barriers for isomerisation. Quantum spin liquids provide paradigmatic examples of highly entangled quantum states of matter. Frustration is the key mechanism to favor spin liquids over more conventional magnetically ordered states. Here we propose to engineer frustration by exploiting the coupling of quantum magnets to the quantized light of an optical cavity. The interplay between the quantum fluctuations of the electro-magnetic field and the strongly correlated electrons results in a tunable long-range interaction between localized spins. This cavity-induced frustration robustly stabilizes spin liquid states, which occupy an extensive region in the phase diagram spanned by the range and strength of the tailored interaction. Remarkably, this occurs even in originally unfrustrated systems, as we showcase for the Heisenberg model on the square lattice.

Recently, the possibility of inducing superconductivity for electrons in two dimensional materials has been proposed via cavity-mediated pairing. The cavity-mediated electron-electron interactions are long range, which has two main effects: firstly, within the standard BCS-type pairing mediated by adiabatic photons, the superconducting critical temperature depends polynomially on the coupling strength, instead of the exponential dependence characterizing the phonon-mediated pairing; secondly, as we show here, the effect of photon fluctuations is significantly enhanced. These mediate novel non-BCS-type pairing processes, via non-adiabatic photons, which are not sensitive to the electron occupation but rather to the electron dispersion and lifetime at the Fermi surface. Therefore, while the leading temperature dependence of BCS pairing comes from the smoothening of the Fermi-Dirac distribution, the temperature dependence of the fluctuation-induced pairing comes from the electron lifetime. For realistic parameters, also including cavity loss, this results into a critical temperature which can be more than one order of magnitude larger than the BCS prediction. Moreover, a finite average number photons (as can be achieved by incoherently pumping the cavity) adds to the fluctuations and leads to a further enhancement of the critical temperature., Comment: published version

Enhanced diffusion and anti-chemotaxis of enzymes have been reported in several experiments in the last decade, opening up entirely new avenues of research in the bio-nanosciences both at the applied and fundamental level. Here, we introduce a novel theoretical framework, rooted in non-equilibrium effects characteristic of catalytic cycles, that explains all observations made so far in this field. In addition, our theory predicts entirely novel effects, such as dissipation-induced switch between anti-chemotactic and chemotactic behavior.

When the novel coronavirus disease SARS-CoV2 (COVID-19) was officially declared a pandemic by the WHO in March 2020, the scientific community had already braced up in the effort of making sense of the fast-growing wealth of data gathered by national authorities all over the world. However, despite the diversity of novel theoretical approaches and the comprehensiveness of many widely established models, the official figures that recount the course of the outbreak still sketch a largely elusive and intimidating picture. Here we show unambiguously that the dynamics of the COVID-19 outbreak belongs to the simple universality class of the SIR model and extensions thereof. Our analysis naturally leads us to establish that there exists a fundamental limitation to any theoretical approach, namely the unpredictable non-stationarity of the testing frames behind the reported figures. However, we show how such bias can be quantified self-consistently and employed to mine useful and accurate information from the data. In particular, we describe how the time evolution of the reporting rates controls the occurrence of the apparent epidemic peak, which typically follows the true one in countries that were not vigorous enough in their testing at the onset of the outbreak. The importance of testing early and resolutely appears as a natural corollary of our analysis, as countries that tested massively at the start clearly had their true peak earlier and less deaths overall., Comment: main paper + supplementary material

In this note we analyze the temporal dynamics of the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak in China, Italy and France in the time window $22/01-09/03/2020$. A first analysis of simple day-lag maps points to some universality in the epidemic spreading, suggesting that simple mean-field models can be meaningfully used to gather a quantitative picture of the epidemic spreading, and notably the height and time of the peak of confirmed infected individuals. The analysis of the same data within a simple susceptible-(confirmed) infected-recovered-deaths model indicates that the kinetic parameter that describes the rate of recovery seems to be the same, irrespective of the country, while the infection and death rates appear to be more variable. The model places the peak in Italy around March 20$^{\rm th}$ 2020, with a maximum number of confirmed infected individuals of about 16,000.

Macromolecular diffusion in strongly confined geometries and crowded environments is still to a large extent an open subject in soft matter physics and biology. In this paper, we employ large-scale Langevin dynamics simulations to investigate how the diffusion of a tracer is influenced by the combined action of excluded-volume and weak attractive crowder-tracer interactions. We consider two species of tracers, standard hard-core particles described by the Weeks-Chandler-Andersen (WCA) repulsive potential and core-softened (CS) particles, which model, e.g., globular proteins, charged colloids and nanoparticles covered by polymeric brushes. These systems are characterized by the presence of two length scales in the interaction and can show water-like anomalies in their diffusion, stemming from the inherent competition between different length scales. Here we report a comprehensive study of both diffusion and structure of these two tracer species in an environment crowded by quenched configurations of polymers at increasing density. We analyze in detail how the tracer-polymer affinity and the system density affect transport as compared to the emergence of specific static spatial correlations. In particular, we find that, while hardly any differences emerge in the diffusion properties of WCA and CS particles, the propensity to develop structural order for large crowding is strongly frustrated for CS particles. Surprisingly, for large enough affinity for the crowding matrix, the diffusion coefficient of WCA tracers display a non-monotonic trend as their density is increased when compared to the zero affinity scenario. This water-like anomaly turns out to be even larger than what observed for CS particle and appears to be rooted in a similar competition between excluded-volume and affinity effects.

The interplay between measurement and quantum correlations in many-body systems can lead to novel types of collective phenomena which are not accessible in isolated systems. In this work, we merge the Zeno-paradigm of quantum measurement theory with the concept of polarons in condensed-matter physics. The resulting quantum-Zeno Fermi-polaron is a quasi-particle which emerges for lossy impurities interacting with a quantum-degenerate bath of fermions. For loss rates of the order of the impurity-fermion binding energy the quasi-particle is short lived. However, we show that in the strongly dissipative regime of large loss rates a long-lived polaron branch re-emerges. This quantum-Zeno Fermi-polaron originates from the nontrivial interplay between the Fermi-surface and the surface of the momentum region forbidden by the quantum Zeno projection. To characterize the generic behavior of open quantum systems, we consider random, purely dissipative Liouvillians with a notion of locality. We find that the positivity of the map implies a sharp separation of the relaxation timescales according to the locality of observables. Specifically, we analyze a spin-1/2 system of size $\ell$ with up to $n$-body Lindblad operators, which are $n$-local in the complexity-theory sense. Without locality ($n=\ell$), the complex Liouvillian spectrum densely covers a "lemon"-shaped support, in agreement with recent findings [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 140403;arXiv:1905.02155]. However, for local Liouvillians ($n<\ell$), we find that the spectrum is composed of several dense clusters with random matrix spacing statistics, each featuring a lemon-shaped support wherein all eigenvectors correspond to $n$-body decay modes. This implies a hierarchy of relaxation timescales of $n$-body observables, which we verify to be robust in the thermodynamic limit.

Energy bands of electrons in a square lattice potential threaded by a uniform magnetic field exhibit a fractal structure known as the Hofstadter butterfly. Here we study a Fermi gas in a 2D optical lattice within a linear cavity with a tilt along the cavity axis. The hopping along the cavity axis is only induced by resonant Raman scattering of transverse pump light into a standing wave cavity mode. Choosing a suitable pump geometry allows to realize the Hofstadter-Harper model with a cavity-induced dynamical synthetic magnetic field, which appears at the onset of the superradiant phase transition. The dynamical nature of this cavity-induced synthetic magnetic field arises from the delicate interplay between collective superradiant scattering and the underlying fractal band structure. Using a sixth-order expansion of the free energy as function of the order parameter and by numerical simulations we show that at low magnetic fluxes the superradiant ordering phase transition is first order, while it becomes second order for higher flux. The dynamic nature of the magnetic field induces a non-trivial deformation of the Hofstadter butterfly in the superradiant phase. At strong pump far above the self-ordering threshold we recover the Hofstadter butterfly one would obtain in a static magnetic field., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

The last decade has witnessed a swiftly increasing interest in the design and production of novel multivalent molecules as powerful alternatives for conventional antibodies in the fight against cancer and infectious diseases. However, while it is widely accepted that large-scale flexibility ($10-100$ nm) and free/constrained dynamics (100 ns $- \mu$s) control the activity of such novel molecules, computational strategies at the mesoscale still lag behind experiments in optimizing the design of crucial features, such as the binding cooperativity (a.k.a. avidity). In this study, we introduced different coarse-grained models of a polymer-linked, two-nanobody composite molecule, with the aim of laying down the physical bases of a thorough computational drug design protocol at the mesoscale. We show that the calculation of suitable potentials of mean force allows one to apprehend the nature, range and strength of the thermodynamic forces that govern the motion of free and wall-tethered molecules. Furthermore, we develop a simple computational strategy to quantify the encounter/dissociation dynamics between the free end of a wall-tethered molecule and the surface, at the roots of binding cooperativity. This procedure allows one to pinpoint the role of internal flexibility and weak non-specific interactions on the kinetic constants of the NB-wall encounter and dissociation. The discovery of quasicrystals with crystallographically forbidden rotational symmetries has changed the notion of the ordering in materials, yet little is known about the dynamical emergence of such exotic forms of order. Here we theoretically study a nonequilibrium cavity-QED setup realizing a zero-temperature quantum phase transition from a homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate to a quasicrystalline phase via collective superradiant light scattering. Across the superradiant phase transition, collective light scattering creates a dynamical, quasicrystalline optical potential for the atoms. Remarkably, the quasicrystalline potential is "emergent" as its eight-fold rotational symmetry is not present in the Hamiltonian of the system, rather appears solely in the low-energy states. For sufficiently strong two-body contact interactions between atoms, a quasicrystalline order is stabilized in the system, while for weakly interacting atoms the condensate is localized in one or few of the deepest minima of the quasicrystalline potential., Comment: 7+5 pages, 3+4 figures, more references added, accepted PRL version

The calculation of the diffusion-controlled reaction rate for partially absorbing, non-spherical boundaries presents a formidable problem of broad relevance. In this paper we take the reference case of a spherical boundary and work out a perturbative approach to get a simple analytical formula for the first-order correction to the diffusive flux onto a non-spherical partially absorbing surface of revolution. To assess the range of validity of this formula, we derive exact and approximate expressions for the reaction rate in the case of partially absorbing prolate and oblate spheroids. We also present numerical solutions by a finite-element method that extend the validity analysis beyond spheroidal shapes. Our perturbative solution provides a handy way to quantify the effect of non-sphericity on the rate of capture in the general case of partial surface reactivity.

We show that in a generic, ergodic quantum many-body system the interactions induce a non-trivial topology for an arbitrarily small non-hermitean component of the Hamiltonian. This is due to an exponential-in-system-size proliferation of exceptional points which have the hermitian limit as an accumulation (hyper-)surface. The nearest-neighbour level repulsion characterizing hermitian ergodic many-body sytems is thus shown to be a projection of a richer phenomenology where actually all the exponentially many pairs of eigenvalues interact. The proliferation and accumulation of exceptional points also implies an exponential difficulty in isolating a local ergodic quantum many-body system from a bath, as a robust topological signature remains in the form of exceptional points arbitrarily close to the hermitian limit.

We investigate the conditions under which periodically driven quantum systems subject to dissipation exhibit a stable subharmonic response. Noting that coupling to a bath introduces not only cooling but also noise, we point out that a system subject to the latter for the entire cycle tends to lose coherence of the subharmonic oscillations, and thereby the long-time temporal symmetry breaking. We provide an example of a short-ranged two-dimensional system which does not suffer from this and therefore displays persistent subharmonic oscillations stabilised by the dissipation. We also show that this is fundamentally different from the disordered DTC previously found in closed systems, both conceptually and in its phenomenology. The framework we develop here clarifies how fully connected models constitute a special case where subharmonic oscillations are stable in the thermodynamic limit.

Enzymes speed up biochemical reactions at the core of life by as much as 15 orders of magnitude. Yet, despite considerable advances, the fine dynamical determinants at the microscopic level of their catalytic proficiency are still elusive. In this work, we use a powerful mathematical approach to show that rate-promoting vibrations in the picosecond range, specifically encoded in the 3D protein structure, are localized vibrations optimally coupled to the chemical reaction coordinates at the active site. The universality of these features is demonstrated on a pool of more than 900 enzyme structures, comprising a total of more than 10,000 experimentally annotated catalytic sites. The characterization of entanglement is a central problem for the study of quantum many-body dynamics. Here, we propose the quantum Fisher information as a useful tool for the study of multipartite-entanglement dynamics in many-body systems. We illustrate this by considering the regular-to-ergodic transition in the Dicke model---a fully-connected spin model showing quantum thermalization above a critical interaction strength. We show that the QFI has a rich dynamical behavior which drastically changes across the transition. In particular, the asymptotic value of the QFI, as well as its characteristic timescales, witness the transition both through their dependence on the interaction strength and through the scaling with the system size. Since the QFI also sets the ultimate bound for the precision of parameter estimation, it provides a metrological perspective on the characterization of entanglement dynamics in many-body systems. We develop a non-equilibrium field-theoretical approach, based on a systematic diagrammatic expansion, for strongly interacting photons in optically dense atomic media. We consider the case where the characteristic photon-propagation range $L_P$ is much larger than the interatomic spacing $a$ and where the density of atomic excitations is low enough to neglect saturation effects. In the highly polarizable medium the photons experience nonlinearities through the interactions they inherit from the atoms. If the atom-atom interaction range $L_E$ is also large compared to $a$, we show that scattering processes with momentum transfer between photons are suppressed by a factor $a/L_E$. We are then able to perform a self-consistent resummation of a specific (Hartree-like) diagram subclass and obtain quantitative results in the highly non-perturbative regime of large single-atom cooperativity. Here we find important, conceptually new collective phenomena emerging due to the dissipative nature of the interactions, which even give rise to novel phase transitions. The robustness of these is investigated by inclusion of the leading corrections in $a/L_E$. The propagation of light in strongly coupled atomic media takes place through the formation of polaritons - hybrid quasi-particles resulting from a superposition of an atomic and a photonic excitation. Here we consider the propagation under the condition of electromagnetically-induced transparency and show that a novel many-body phenomenon can appear due to strong, dissipative interactions between the polaritons. Upon increasing the photon-pump strength, we find a first-order transition between an opaque phase with strongly broadened polaritons and a transparent phase where a long-lived polariton branch with highly tunable occupation emerges. Across this non-equilibrium phase transition, the transparency window is reconstructed via nonlinear interference effects induced by the dissipative polariton interactions. Our predictions are based on a systematic diagrammatic expansion of the non-equilibrium Dyson equations which is quantitatively valid, even in the non-perturbative regime of large single-atom cooperativities, provided the polariton interactions are sufficiently long ranged. The recent experimental observation of spinor self-ordering of ultracold atoms in optical resonators has set the stage for the exploration of emergent magnetic orders in quantum-gas--cavity systems. Based on this platform, we introduce a generic scheme for the implementation of long-range quantum spin Hamiltonians composed of various types of couplings, including Heisenberg and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Our model is comprised of an effective two-component Bose-Einstein condensate, driven by two classical pump lasers and coupled to a single dynamic mode of a linear cavity in a double $\Lambda$ scheme. Cavity photons mediate the long-range spin-spin interactions with spatially modulated coupling coefficients, where the latter ones can be tuned by modifying spatial profiles of the pump lasers. As experimentally relevant examples, we demonstrate that by properly choosing the spatial profiles of the pump lasers achiral domain-wall antiferromagnetic and chiral spin-spiral orders emerge beyond critical laser strengths. The transition between these two phases can be observed in a single experimental setup by tuning the reflectivity of a mirror. Quantum nonlinear optics is a quickly growing field with large technological promise, at the same time involving complex and novel many-body phenomena. In the usual scenario, optical nonlinearities originate from the interactions between polaritons, which are hybrid quasi-particles mixing matter and light degrees of freedom. Here we introduce a type of polariton which is intrinsically nonlinear and emerges as the natural quasi-particle in presence quantum degenerate fermionic matter. It is a composite object made of a fermion trapped inside an optical soliton forming a topological defect in a spontaneously formed crystalline structure. Each of these soliton-polaritons carries a $\textbf{Z}_2$ topological quantum number, as they create a domain wall between two crystalline regions with opposite dimerization so that the fermion is trapped in an interphase state. In this paper we introduce a method to resolve transient excitations in time-frequency space from molecular dynamics simulations. Our technique is based on continuous wavelet transform of velocity time series coupled to a threshold-dependent filtering procedure to isolate excitation events from background noise in a given spectral region. By following in time the center of mass of the reference frequency interval, the data can be easily exploited to investigate the statistics of the burst excitation dynamics, by computing, for instance, the distribution of the burst lifetimes, excitation times, amplitudes and energies. As an illustration of our method, we investigate transient excitations in the gap of NaI crystals at thermal equilibrium at different temperatures. Our results reveal complex ensembles of transient nonlinear bursts in the gap, whose lifetime and excitation rate increase with temperature. The method described in this paper is a powerful tool to investigate transient excitations in many-body systems at thermal equilibrium. Diffusion to capture is an ubiquitous phenomenon in many fields in biology and physical chemistry, with implications as diverse as ligand-receptor binding on eukaryotic and bacterial cells, nutrient uptake by colonies of unicellular organisms and the functioning of complex core-shell nanoreactors. Whenever many boundaries compete for the same diffusing molecules, they inevitably shield a variable part of the molecular flux from each other. This gives rise to the so-called diffusive interactions (DI), which can reduce substantially the influx to a collection of reactive boundaries depending chiefly on their geometrical configuration. In this review we provide a pedagogical discussion of the main mathematical aspects underlying a rigorous account of DIs. Starting from a striking and deep result on the mean-field description of ligand binding to a receptor-covered cell, we develop little by little a rigorous mathematical description of DIs in the stationary case through the use of translational addition theorems for spherical harmonics. We consider the $d$-dimensional transverse-field Ising model with power-law interactions $J/r^{d+\sigma}$ in the presence of a noisy longitudinal field with zero average. We study the longitudinal-magnetization dynamics of an initial paramagnetic state after a sudden switch-on of both the interactions and the noisy field. While the system eventually relaxes to an infinite-temperature state with vanishing magnetization correlations, we find that two-time correlation functions show aging at intermediate times. Moreover, for times shorter than the inverse noise strength $\kappa$ and distances longer than $a(J/\kappa)^{2/\sigma}$ with $a$ being the lattice spacing, we find a critical scaling regime of correlation and response functions consistent with the model A dynamical universality class with an initial-slip exponent $\theta=1$ and dynamical critical exponent $z=\sigma/2$. We obtain our results analytically by deriving an effective action for the magnetization field including the noise in a non-perturbative way. Metallic nanoparticles have been used as catalysts for various reactions, and the huge literature on the subject is hard to overlook. In many applications, the nanoparticles must be affixed to a colloidal carrier for easy handling during catalysis. These "passive carriers" (e.g., dendrimers) serve for a controlled synthesis of the nanoparticles and prevent coagulation during catalysis. Recently, hybrids from nanoparticles and polymers have been developed that allow us to change the catalytic activity of the nanoparticles by external triggers. In particular, single nanoparticles embedded in a thermosensitive network made from poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) have become the most-studied examples of such hybrids: Immersed in cold water, the PNIPAM network is hydrophilic and fully swollen. In this state, hydrophilic substrates can diffuse easily through the network, and react at the surface of the nanoparticles. Above the volume transition located at 32{\deg}C, the network becomes hydrophobic and shrinks. Now hydrophobic substrates will preferably diffuse through the network and react with other substrates in the reaction catalyzed by the enclosed nanoparticle. Supersolids are characterized by the counter-intuitive coexistence of superfluid and crystalline order. Here we study a supersolid phase emerging in the steady state of a driven-dissipative system. We consider a transversely pumped Bose-Einstein condensate trapped along the axis of a ring cavity and coherently coupled to a pair of degenerate counter-propagating cavity modes. Above a threshold pump strength the interference of photons scattered into the two cavity modes results in an emergent superradiant lattice, which spontaneously breaks the continuous translational symmetry towards a periodic atomic pattern. The crystalline steady state inherits the superfluidity of the Bose-Einstein condensate, thus exhibiting genuine properties of a supersolid. A gapless collective Goldstone mode correspondingly appears in the superradiant phase, which can be non-destructively monitored via the relative phase of the two cavity modes on the cavity output. Despite cavity-photon losses the Goldstone mode remains undamped, indicating the robustness of the supersolid phase., Comment: 5+2 pages, 3 figures
