A solar active region can significantly disrupt the Sun Earth space environment, often leading to severe space weather events such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections. As a consequence, the automatic classification of active region groups is the crucial starting point for accurately and promptly predicting solar activity. This study presents our results concerned with the application of deep learning techniques to the classification of active region cutouts based on the Mount Wilson classification scheme. Specifically, we have explored the latest advancements in image classification architectures, from Convolutional Neural Networks to Vision Transformers, and reported on their performances for the active region classification task, showing that the crucial point for their effectiveness consists in a robust training process based on the latest advances in the field.

In this paper, we propose a novel strategy for physical layer authentications based on the challenge-response concept for a transmitting drone (Alice). In a preliminary training phase, Alice moves over several positions, and Bob (either a drone or a ground device) estimates the Alice-Bob channel gains. Then Alice transmits its message from different random positions (challenge) and Bob, upon receiving the messages, authenticates the sender via a log-likelihood test on the estimated channel gains (response). In turn, the intruder Trudy selects random positions on which she transmits messages on behalf of Alice to Bob. In this paper, we design the probability mass distribution of Alice's challenge positions and the Trudy response positions by modeling the problem as a zero-sum game between Bob and Trudy, where the payoff of Trudy is the missed detection probability. Moreover, we propose three different approaches that minimize the energy spent by Alice without sacrificing security, which differ in computational complexity and resulting energy consumption. Finally, we test the proposed technique via numerical simulations, which include a realistic model of both Alice-Bob and Trudy-Bob fading channels, affected by shadowing.

The solar wind drag-based model is a widely used framework for predicting the propagation of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) through interplanetary space. This model primarily considers the aerodynamic drag exerted by the solar wind on CMEs. However, factors like magnetic forces, pressure gradients, and the internal dynamics within CMEs justify the need of introducing an additional small-scale acceleration term in the game. Indeed, by accounting for this extra acceleration, the extended drag-based model is shown to offer improved accuracy in describing the evolution of CMEs through the heliosphere and, in turn, in forecasting CME trajectories and arrival times at Earth. This enhancement is crucial for better predicting Space Weather events and mitigating their potential impacts on space-based and terrestrial technologies.

Imaging spectroscopy, i.e., the generation of spatially resolved count spectra and of cubes of count maps at different energies, is one of the main goals of solar hard X-ray missions based on Fourier imaging. For these telescopes, so far imaging spectroscopy has been realized via the generation of either count maps independently reconstructed at the different energy channels, or electron flux maps reconstructed via deconvolution of the bremsstrahlung cross-section. Our aim is to introduce the Regularized Imaging Spectroscopy method (RIS), in which regularization implemented in the count space imposes a smoothing constraint across contiguous energy channels, without the need to deconvolve the bremsstrahlung effect. STIX records imaging data computing visibilities in the spatial frequency domain. Our RIS is a sequential scheme in which part of the information coded in the image reconstructed at a specific energy channel is transferred to the reconstruction process at a contiguous channel via visibility interpolation based on Variably Scaled Kernels. In the case of STIX visibilities recorded during the November 11, 2022 flaring event, we show that RIS is able to generate hard X-ray maps whose morphology smoothly evolves from one energy channel to the contiguous one, and that from these maps it is possible to infer spatially-resolved count spectra characterized by notable numerical stability. We also show that the performances of this approach are robust with respect to both the image reconstruction method and the count energy channel utilized to trigger the sequential process. RIS is appropriate to construct image cubes from STIX visibilities that are characterized by a smooth behavior across count energies, thus allowing the generation of numerically stable (and, thus, physically reliable) local count spectra.

Purpose: Analysis of [18F]-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) kinetics in cancer has been most often limited to the evaluation of the average uptake over relatively large volumes. Nevertheless, tumor lesion almost contains inflammatory infiltrates whose cells are characterized by a significant radioactivity washout due to the hydrolysis of FDG-6P catalyzed by glucose-6P phosphatase. The present study aimed to verify whether voxel-wise compartmental analysis of dynamic imaging can identify tumor regions characterized by tracer washout. Materials & Methods: The study included 11 patients with lung cancer submitted to PET/CT imaging for staging purposes. Tumor was defined by drawing a volume of interest loosely surrounding the lesion and considering all inside voxels with standardized uptake value (SUV) >40% of the maximum. After 20 minutes dynamic imaging centered on the heart, eight whole body scans were repeated. Six parametric maps were progressively generated by computing six regression lines that considered all eight frames, the last seven ones, and so on, up to the last three. Results: Progressively delaying the starting point of regression line computation identified a progressive increase in the prevalence of voxels with a negative slope. Conclusions: The voxel-wise parametric maps provided by compartmental analysis permits to identify a measurable volume characterized by radioactivity washout. The spatial localization of this pattern is compatible with the recognized preferential site of inflammatory infiltrates populating the tumor stroma and might improve the power of FDG imaging in monitoring the effectiveness of treatments aimed to empower the host immune response against the cancer.

We provide an explicit expression for the modular hamiltonian of the von Neumann algebras associated to the unit double cone for the (fermionic) quantum field theories of the 2-component Weyl (helicity 1/2) field, and of the 4-component massless Dirac and Majorana fields. To this end, we represent the one particle spaces of these theories in terms of solutions of the corresponding wave equations, and obtain the action of the modular group on them. Drones are expected to be used for many tasks in the future and require secure communication protocols. In this work, we propose a novel physical layer authentication (PLA)-based challenge-response (CR) protocol in which a drone Bob authenticates the sender (either on the ground or air) by exploiting his prior knowledge of the wireless channel statistic (fading, path loss, and shadowing). In particular, Bob will move to a set of positions in the space, and by estimating the attenuations of the received signals he will authenticate the sender. We take into account the energy consumption in the design and provide three solutions: a purely greedy solution (PG), an optimal Bellman iterative solution (BI), and a heuristic solution based on the evaluation of the standard deviation of the attenuations in the space. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through numerical simulations.

In this work we study the co-evolution of central black holes (BHs) and host galaxies by utilizing an advanced iteration of the DELPHI semi-analytical model of galaxy formation and evolution. Based on dark matter halo merger trees spanning the redshift range from $z=20$ to $z=4$, it now incorporates essential components such as gas heating and cooling, cold and hot BH accretion, jet and radiative AGN feedback. We show how different BH growth models impact quasar and galaxy observables at $z \geq 5$, providing predictions that will help discriminate between super-Eddington and Eddington-limited accretion models: despite being both consistent with observed properties of SMBHs and their host galaxies at $z \sim 5-7$, they become very clearly distinguishable at higher redshift and in the intermediate mass regime. We find that the super-Eddington model, unlike the Eddington-limited scenario, predicts a gap in the BH mass function corresponding to the intermediate-mass range $10^4 \mathrm{M_\odot} < M_\mathrm{bh} < 10^6 \mathrm{M_\odot}$. Additionally, it predicts black holes up to two orders of magnitude more massive for the same stellar mass at $z=9$. The resulting velocity dispersion - BH mass relation at $z \geq 5$ is consistent with local measurements, suggesting that its slope and normalisation are independent of redshift. Depending on the Eddington ratio, we also model the emergence of AGN jets, predicting their duty cycle across as a function of BH mass and their potential impact on the observed number density distribution of high-redshift AGN in the hard X-ray band., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

This study addresses the prediction of geomagnetic disturbances by exploiting machine learning techniques. Specifically, the Long-Short Term Memory recurrent neural network, which is particularly suited for application over long time series, is employed in the analysis of in-situ measurements of solar wind plasma and magnetic field acquired over more than one solar cycle, from $2005$ to $2019$, at the Lagrangian point L$1$. The problem is approached as a binary classification aiming to predict one hour in advance a decrease in the SYM-H geomagnetic activity index below the threshold of $-50$ nT, which is generally regarded as indicative of magnetospheric perturbations. The strong class imbalance issue is tackled by using an appropriate loss function tailored to optimize appropriate skill scores in the training phase of the neural network. Beside classical skill scores, value-weighted skill scores are then employed to evaluate predictions, suitable in the study of problems, such as the one faced here, characterized by strong temporal variability. For the first time, the content of magnetic helicity and energy carried by solar transients, associated with their detection and likelihood of geo-effectiveness, were considered as input features of the network architecture. Their predictive capabilities are demonstrated through a correlation-driven feature selection method to rank the most relevant characteristics involved in the neural network prediction model. The optimal performance of the adopted neural network in properly forecasting the onset of geomagnetic storms, which is a crucial point for giving real warnings in an operational setting, is finally showed.

The purpose of this study is to introduce a new approach to feature ranking for classification tasks, called in what follows greedy feature selection. In statistical learning, feature selection is usually realized by means of methods that are independent of the classifier applied to perform the prediction using that reduced number of features. Instead, greedy feature selection identifies the most important feature at each step and according to the selected classifier. In the paper, the benefits of such scheme are investigated theoretically in terms of model capacity indicators, such as the Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC) dimension or the kernel alignment, and tested numerically by considering its application to the problem of predicting geo-effective manifestations of the active Sun.

Hybrid reflective intelligent surfaces (HRISs) can support localization in sixth-generation (6G) networks thanks to their ability to generate narrow beams and at the same time receive and process locally the impinging signals. In this paper, we propose a novel protocol for user localization in a network with an HRIS. The protocol includes two steps. In the first step, the HRIS operates in full absorption mode and the user equipment (UE) transmits a signal that is locally processed at the HRIS to estimate the angle of arrival (AoA). In the second step, the base station transmits a downlink reference signal to the UE, and the HRIS superimposes a message by a backscatter modulation. The message contains information on the previously estimated AoA. Lastly, the UE, knowing the position of the HRIS, estimates the time of flight (ToF) from the signal of the second step and demodulates the information on the AoA to obtain an estimate of its location. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed solution, also in comparison with the Cram\'er Rao lower bound on the estimated quantities.nd on the estimated quantities.

AI-FLARES (Artificial Intelligence for the Analysis of Solar Flares Data) is a research project funded by the Agenzia Spaziale Italiana and by the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica within the framework of the ``Attivit\`a di Studio per la Comunit\`a Scientifica Nazionale Sole, Sistema Solare ed Esopianeti'' program. The topic addressed by this project was the development and use of computational methods for the analysis of remote sensing space data associated to solar flare emission. This paper overviews the main results obtained by the project, with specific focus on solar flare forecasting, reconstruction of morphologies of the flaring sources, and interpretation of acceleration mechanisms triggered by solar flares.

The analysis of the psoas muscle in morphological and functional imaging has proved to be an accurate approach to assess sarcopenia, i.e. a systemic loss of skeletal muscle mass and function that may be correlated to multifactorial etiological aspects. The inclusion of sarcopenia assessment into a radiological workflow would need the implementation of computational pipelines for image processing that guarantee segmentation reliability and a significant degree of automation. The present study utilizes three-dimensional numerical schemes for psoas segmentation in low-dose X-ray computed tomography images. Specifically, here we focused on the level set methodology and compared the performances of two standard approaches, a classical evolution model and a three-dimension geodesic model, with the performances of an original first-order modification of this latter one. The results of this analysis show that these gradient-based schemes guarantee reliability with respect to manual segmentation and that the first-order scheme requires a computational burden that is significantly smaller than the one needed by the second-order approach.

Regularized imaging spectroscopy was introduced for the construction of electron flux images at different energies from count visibilities recorded by the Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI). In this work we seek to extend this approach to data from the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on-board the Solar Orbiter mission. Our aims are to demonstrate the feasibility of regularized imaging spectroscopy as a method for analysis of STIX data, and also to show how such analysis can lead to insights into the physical processes affecting the nonthermal electrons responsible for the hard X-ray emission observed by STIX. STIX records imaging data in an intrinsically different manner from RHESSI. Rather than sweeping the angular frequency plane in a set of concentric circles (one circle per detector), STIX uses $30$ collimators, each corresponding to a specific angular frequency. In this paper we derive an appropriate modification of the previous computational approach for the analysis of the visibilities observed by STIX. This approach also allows for the observed count data to be placed into non-uniformly-spaced energy bins. We show that the regularized imaging spectroscopy approach is not only feasible for analysis of the visibilities observed by STIX, but also more reliable. Application of the regularized imaging spectroscopy technique to several well-observed flares reveals details of the variation of the electron flux spectrum throughout the flare sources. We conclude that the visibility-based regularized imaging spectroscopy approach is well-suited to analysis of STIX data. We also use STIX electron flux spectral images to track, for the first time, the behavior of the accelerated electrons during their path from the acceleration site in the solar corona toward the chromosphere

We study the convergence properties of Glauber dynamics for the random field Ising model (RFIM) with ferromagnetic interactions on finite domains of $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \ge 2$. Of particular interest is the Griffiths phase where correlations decay exponentially fast in expectation over the quenched disorder, but there exist arbitrarily large islands of weak fields where low-temperature behavior is observed. Our results are twofold: 1. Under weak spatial mixing (boundary-to-bulk exponential decay of correlations) in expectation, we show that the dynamics satisfy a weak Poincar\'e inequality implying algebraic relaxation to equilibrium over timescales polynomial in the volume $N$ of the domain, and polynomial time mixing from a warm start. From this we construct a polynomial-time approximate sampling algorithm based on running Glauber dynamics over an increasing sequence of approximations of the domain. 2. Under strong spatial mixing (exponential decay of correlations even near boundary pinnings) in expectation, we prove a full Poincar\'e inequality, implying exponential relaxation to equilibrium and $N^{o(1)}$-mixing time. Note by way of example, both weak and strong spatial mixing hold at any temperature, provided the external fields are strong enough. Aims: To formulate, implement, and validate a user-independent release of CLEAN for Fourier-based image reconstruction of hard X-rays flaring sources. Methods: CLEAN is an iterative deconvolution method for radio and hard X-ray solar imaging. In a specific step of its pipeline, CLEAN requires the convolution between an idealized version of the instrumental Point Spread Function (PSF), and a map collecting point sources located at positions on the solar disk from where most of the flaring radiation is emitted. This convolution step has highly heuristic motivations and the shape of the idealized PSF, which depends on the user's choice, impacts the shape of the overall reconstruction. Here we propose the use of an interpolation/extrapolation process to avoid this user-dependent step, and to realize a completely unbiased version of CLEAN. Results: Applications to observations recorded by the Spectrometer/Telescope for Imaging X-rays (STIX) on-board Solar Orbiter show that this unbiased release of CLEAN outperforms the standard version of the algorithm in terms of both automation and reconstruction reliability, with reconstructions whose accuracy is in line with the one offered by other imaging methods developed in the STIX framework. Conclusions: This unbiased version of CLEAN proposes a feasible solution to a well-known open issue concerning CLEAN, i.e., its low degree of automation. Further, this study provided the first application of an interpolation/extrapolation approach to image reconstruction from STIX experimental visibilities.

FOXSI is a direct-imaging, hard X-ray (HXR) telescope optimized for solar flare observations. It detects hot plasma and energetic electrons in and near energy release sites in the solar corona via bremsstrahlung emission, measuring both spatial structure and particle energy distributions. It provides two orders of magnitude faster imaging spectroscopy than previously available, probing physically relevant timescales (<1s) never before accessible to address fundamental questions of energy release and efficient particle acceleration that have importance far beyond their solar application (e.g., planetary magnetospheres, flaring stars, accretion disks). FOXSI measures not only the bright chromospheric X-ray emission where electrons lose most of their energy, but also simultaneous emission from electrons as they are accelerated in the corona and propagate along magnetic field lines. FOXSI detects emission from high in the tenuous corona, where previous instruments have been blinded by nearby bright features and will fully characterizes the accelerated electrons and hottest plasmas as they evolve in energy, space, and time to solve the mystery of how impulsive energy release leads to solar eruptions, the primary drivers of space weather at Earth, and how those eruptions are energized and evolve., Comment: White paper submitted to the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space Physics (Heliophysics) 2024-2033; 14 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

In many contexts, customized and weighted classification scores are designed in order to evaluate the goodness of the predictions carried out by neural networks. However, there exists a discrepancy between the maximization of such scores and the minimization of the loss function in the training phase. In this paper, we provide a complete theoretical setting that formalizes weighted classification metrics and then allows the construction of losses that drive the model to optimize these metrics of interest. After a detailed theoretical analysis, we show that our framework includes as particular instances well-established approaches such as classical cost-sensitive learning, weighted cross entropy loss functions and value-weighted skill scores.

Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) correspond to dramatic expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the solar corona into the heliosphere. CMEs are scientifically relevant because they are involved in the physical mechanisms characterizing the active Sun. However, more recently CMEs have attracted attention for their impact on space weather, as they are correlated to geomagnetic storms and may induce the generation of Solar Energetic Particles streams. In this space weather framework, the present paper introduces a physics-driven artificial intelligence (AI) approach to the prediction of CMEs travel time, in which the deterministic drag-based model is exploited to improve the training phase of a cascade of two neural networks fed with both remote sensing and in-situ data. This study shows that the use of physical information in the AI architecture significantly improves both the accuracy and the robustness of the travel time prediction.

Variably scaled kernels and mapped bases constructed via the so-called fake nodes approach are two different strategies to provide adaptive bases for function interpolation. In this paper, we focus on kernel-based interpolation and we present what we call mapped variably scaled kernels, which take advantage of both strategies. We present some theoretical analysis and then we show their efficacy via numerical experiments. Moreover, we test such a new basis for image reconstruction tasks in the framework of hard X-ray astronomical imaging.

Multi-scale deconvolution is an ill-posed inverse problem in imaging, with applications ranging from microscopy, through medical imaging, to astronomical remote sensing. In the case of high-energy space telescopes, multi-scale deconvolution algorithms need to account for the peculiar property of native measurements, which are sparse samples of the Fourier transform of the incoming radiation. The present paper proposes a multi-scale version of CLEAN, which is the most popular iterative deconvolution method in Fourier space imaging. Using synthetic data generated according to a simulated but realistic source configuration, we show that this multi-scale version of CLEAN performs better than the original one in terms of accuracy, photometry, and regularization. Further, the application to a data set measured by the NASA Reuven Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) shows the ability of multi-scale CLEAN to reconstruct rather complex topographies, characteristic of a real flaring event.
