A a Heintze group is a Lie group of the form $N\rtimes_\alpha \mathbb{R}$, where $N$ is a simply connected nilpotent Lie group and $\alpha$ is a derivation of $\mathrm{Lie}(N)$ whose eigenvalues all have positive real parts. We show that if two purely real Heintze groups equipped with left-invariant metrics are quasi-isometric, then up to a positive scalar multiple, their respective derivations have the same characteristic polynomial. Using the same thecniques, we prove that if we restrict to the class of Heintze groups for which $N$ is the Heisenberg group, then the Jordan form of $\alpha$, up to positive scalar multiples, is a quasi-isometry invariant., Comment: 18 pages, 2 figures

Mathematics - Metric Geometry - Abstract
We consider an Orlicz space based cohomology for metric (measured) spaces with bounded geometry. We prove the quasi-isometry invariance for a general Young function. In the hyperbolic case, we prove that the degree one cohomology can be identified with an Orlicz-Besov function space on the boundary at infinity. We give some applications to the large scale geometry of homogeneous spaces with negative curvature (Heintze groups). As our main result, we prove that if the Heintze group is not of Carnot type, any self quasi-isometry fixes a distinguished point on the boundary and preserves a certain foliation on the complement of that point.

We prove a general criterion for a metric space to have conformal dimension one. The conditions are stated in terms of the existence of enough local cut points in the space. We then apply this criterion to the boundaries of hyperbolic groups and show an interesting relationship between conformal dimension and some canonical splittings of the group., Comment: 19 pages, 1 figure. In this article we study the Ahlfors regular conformal gauge of a compact metric space $(X,d)$, and its conformal dimension $\mathrm{dim}_{AR}(X,d)$. Using a sequence of finite coverings of $(X,d)$, we construct distances in its Ahlfors regular conformal gauge of controlled Hausdorff dimension. We obtain in this way a combinatorial description, up to bi-Lipschitz homeomorphisms, of all the metrics in the gauge. We show how to compute $\mathrm{dim}_{AR}(X,d)$ using the critical exponent $Q_N$ associated to the combinatorial modulus., Comment: 49 pages, 9 figures

Urban green spaces are primarily recognized for their ability to provide opportunities for recreational activities. However, these spaces also offer a broader range of ecosystem services and benefits, which are often overlooked by city inhabitants and the government. This paper utilizes choice experiments to estimate the benefits derived from ecosystem services provided by undeveloped natural areas and urban parks in San José, Costa Rica. We evaluate three ecosystem services provided by undeveloped natural areas, namely habitats for animals and plants, hydrological control, and recreation. Additionally, we estimate the benefits derived from the restoration and construction of three types of urban parks: neighborhood, metropolitan, and central district parks. The results demonstrate that individuals place significant value on the restoration of undeveloped natural areas and urban parks. The findings also indicate variations in the valuation of ecosystem services between undeveloped natural areas and different park types, as well as among households. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores the homogeneity of the functional form, the parameters, and the turning point, when appropriate, of the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic activity for 31 countries (28 OECD, Brazil, China, and India) during the period 1950 to 2006 using cointegration analysis. With a sample highly overlapped over time between countries, the result reveals that the homogeneity across countries is rejected, both in functional form and in the parameters of long term relationship. This confirms the relevance of considering the heterogeneity in exploring the relationship between air pollution and economic activity to avoid spurious parameter estimates and infer a wrong behavior of the functional form, which could lead to induce that the relationship is reversed when in fact it is direct.

We analyse the NOX gas emissions of different productive sectors in Spain. Using input–output analysis, we study all sectors as subsystems of the economy and classify them according to the explanatory factors of their total (direct and indirect) emissions. This classification provides guidance on the type of policies that should be developed in the different sectors with the aim of mitigating NOX emissions. Some sectors that seem less important when looking at their direct emissions turn out to be highly relevant in terms of their total emissions. The results indicate that demand policies can be effective in these sectors, especially in construction, but also in some service sectors that do not appear to be important polluters at first sight. These policies can complement technical improvements and best practice measures applied to directly polluting sectors.

We provide experimental evidence on the effects of social disapproval by peers among communities of Uruguayan small-scale fishers exploiting a common pool resource (CPR). We combined this treatment with an in-group (groups from a single community) / mixed group (groups composed of fishers from different communities) treatment. We find that mixed groups, unlike in-groups, reduce their exploitation of the resource in response to the threat of punishment. Both in in-groups and mixed groups there is substantial antisocial punishment, which leads to increased extraction of the CPR by those who are unfairly punished. These findings indicate that effective peer punishment requires coordination to prevent antisocial targeting and to clarify the social signal conveyed by punishment.

The long-run relationship between carbon dioxide emissions from energy use and economic activity level is estimated for Uruguay between 1882 and 2010. We apply cointegration techniques and estimate a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) for testing whether these variables are endogenous over the long-rung while also considering the short-run dynamics. The economic productive structure, the degree of openness, and the share of clean sources on total energy supply are also considered as explanatory variables. The results show that there exists a linear relationship between carbon dioxide emissions and per capita economic activity level. Moreover, emissions increase jointly with the industrial sector participation in total output, as a consequence of the intensity of this activity in the consumption of energy from fossil fuels sources. The degree of openness is inversely related with carbon dioxide emissions. This is so because the periods of major opening were based on primary inputs exports, lower in energy intensity than industrial products. The changes in carbon dioxide emission are inversely related to the variation in the share of clean sources on total energy supply. Finally, all the variables included in the cointegration vector are endogenous, adjusting together to the deviations from the long-run relationship. As a consequence of the above, economic growth appears to be not enough for diminishing Uruguayan emissions in the long-run. Changes in the energy matrix should be encouraged, and emissions reduction should come not by energy constraints but by the development of clean sources or energy use efficiency improvements, given the impact of energy on economic activity level

We provide experimental evidence on the effects of non-monetary punishment by peers among communities of Uruguayan fishers exploiting a common pool resource (CPR). We combined this treatment with an in-group (groups from a single community) / mixed group (groups composed of fishers from different communities) treatment. Our aim is to compare the effects of non-monetary sanctions in a context in which individuals exploiting a CPR belong to different communities relative to the case in which only individuals from the same community are allowed to exploit the resource. We find that mixed groups—unlike in-groups—reduce their exploitation of the resource in response to the threat of punishment. We do not find any differences in behavior between in-groups and mixed groups when the possibility of being punished is not available. The effectiveness of non-monetary punishment is reduced because cooperation was not perceived as the unique social norm. In such cases there is substantial antisocial punishment, which leads to increased extraction of the CPR by those who are unfairly punished. These findings indicate that effective peer punishment requires coordination to prevent antisocial targeting and to clarify the social signal conveyed by punishment.

This paper analyzes the carbon dioxide emissions of the services sectors subsystem of Uruguay in 2004. Services, with the exception of transport, are often considered intangible because of their low level of direct emissions. However, the provision of services requires inputs produced by other sectors, including several highly materialintensive sectors. Through input-output analysis we investigate the relationship between the services subsystem and the rest of the economy as regards carbon dioxide emissions. This approach allows us to study the importance of the set of services branches as a unit in the economic structure as well as to analyze in detail the relationship between the branches. The results depict that services' direct emissions are the main component, as a consequence of transport-related sectors. However, the pollution that the services subsystem makes the rest of the economy produce is very significant, and it is almost all explained by non-transport-related sectors. This analysis is useful for determining the sectors in which mitigation policies are more effective, and whether they would be better tackled through technical improvements and better practices or through demand policies.

Esto evidencia la existencia de fuertes efectos de conformismo., The general objective of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between the economy and the environment at different scales. This must be understood as choosing a research problem at each dimension, and to apply the tools that better fit to analyze each problem. The present document is divided in three parts. Each part corresponds to one dimension, and policy implications are directly derived from the analysis. Part I approaches the relationship between the environment and the economy from an international dimension. Chapter 1 explores the relationship between CO2 emissions and economic activity for 31 countries (28 OECD, Brazil, China, and India) during the period 1950 to 2006. Single country long run relationships are estimated, and equality in the functional form, the parameters, and the turning point, when appropriate, are rejected. This confirms the relevance of considering the differences among countries in the relationship between air pollution and economic activity to avoid wrong estimations and conclusions. Part II analyses the relationship between the economy and the environment from a national perspective. This part is divided in two chapters. Chapter 2 identifies the key sectors in greenhouse gas emissions of the Uruguayan economy through input–output analysis. In order to guide mitigation policy design, we decompose each sector’s responsibility into the pollution generated through its own production process and the pollution indirectly generated in the production processes of other sectors. In addition, the role of external demand is analyzed. The results show that all the key polluting sectors are important because of their own emissions, except for the Motor vehicles and oil retail trade sector. Moreover, very indirect effects are found through Building, and Hotels and restaurants. Also, Financial intermediation may be relevant for the design of mechanisms to encourage cleaner production. Finally, external demand is the main driver for methane and nitrous oxide emissions, while carbon dioxide emissions are mainly driven by domestic demand. Chapter 3 analyzes methane emissions of the agro industrial subsystem and carbon dioxide emissions of the services sectors subsystem in Uruguay in 2004. The relationship of these subsystems with the rest of the economy is analyzed through input–output methodology employing a multiplicative decomposition. This is combined with an additive decomposition for the study of the linkages within them. This approach allows to study the importance of these subsystems as units in the economic structure as well as to analyze in detail the relationship between the different branches in each of the subsystems. The results depict in which sectors mitigation policies are more effective, and if they would be better tackled through technical improvements and better practices, or through demand policies. Finally, Part III takes a local perspective for approaching the analysis between economic activities and the environment. Chapter 4 provides experimental evidence on the effects of non-monetary punishment (NMP) by peers among communities of Uruguayan fishers exploiting a common pool resource (CPR). We find that: a) groups composed of fishers from different communities (out-groups) reduced their exploitation of the resource in response to the threat of punishment; unlike experimental groups from a single community (in-groups), b) NMP effectiveness is diminished because of the presence of antisocial punishment and because individuals correctly anticipate that the likelihood of being punished is increasing in extraction levels. Those who would experience disutility by being punished reduce their extraction levels beforehand while those that do not care about social disapproval maintain their extraction at high levels. Finally, c) individuals adjust their period-by-period decisions in order to converge with their peers’ average in a previous period, showing strong conformity effects.

This paper identifies the key sectors in greenhouse gas emissions of the Uruguayan economy through input-output analysis. This allows to precisely determine the role played by the different productive sectors and their relationship with other sectors in the relation between the Uruguayan productive structure and atmospheric pollution. In order to guide policy design for GHG reduction, we decompose sectors liability between the pollution generated through their own production processes and the pollution indirectly generated in the production processes of other sectors. The results show that all the key polluting sectors for the different contaminants considered are relevant because of their own emissions, except for the sector Motor vehicles and oil retail trade, which is relevant in CO2 emissions because of its pure, both backward and forward, linkages. Finally, the best policy channels for controlling and reducing GHGs emissions are identified, and compared with the National Climate Change Response Plan (NCCRP) lines of action.

The general objective of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between the economy and the environment at different scales. In order to guide mitigation policy design, we decompose each sector's responsibility into the pollution generated through its own production process and the pollution indirectly generated in the production processes of other sectors. Finally, external demand is the main driver for methane and

- Abstract
This research aims to explore the existing relationship between economic growth and air pollution and air quality (CO2 and SO2, respectively) in Uruguay (characterized as a small, open economy) throughout the XXth century. Based on the theory behind the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), the existence of a linear relation between the economic growth and the polluting agents for the 1955 - 2000 period was verified through a Vector Error Correction Model (VECM). But while the atmospheric contamination emissions level grows jointly with product throughout the same period, air quality pollutant indicator emissions behave in the reverse way.

Geometría a gran escala - Abstract
